Swakopmund psychiatrist Dr Pieter van der Westhuizen denies allegations he drugged and raped and indecently assaulted a patient in his practise in the holiday town on a Saturday in November 2015. The patient laid charges of rape, indecent assault and attempted murder against Dr van der Westhuizen. He also denies having tried to kill this patient by providing her with a potentially lethal dose of drugs. The trial against Dr van der Westhuizen continues in the Windhoek High Court. On the picture right: only hours after Namib Times reported on Friday 18 November 2016 that Dr van der Westhuizen was released on N$10 000 bail the previous day in the Swakopmund magistrate's court on the charges referred to above, the following picture emerged of him and a female friend in his social media circle.

new salt washing plant for Walvis Bay Salt Refiners at the salt pans. Construction work has grinded to a total halt as a result of the accident, as the entire construction crew were aboard this ill-fated bus. Neumayer Civil Contractors (Pty) Ltd's managing director Mr John Mitchell could not be reached for comment yesterday, as he was traveling from Rosh Pinah to the coast to attend to issues pertaining to the aftermath of the accident. What Namib Times could establish was that no employees of Walvis Bay Salt Refiners were on the bus. An investigation is now launched into the accident, but the newspaper learnt that speed did not play a role in the accident and the bus carried 37 people and has a capacity for 60 passengers and therefore overloading is also counted out as a factor. What transpired though is that Walvis Bay Salt Refiners in the recent past directed several letters of complaint to the Roads Authority over the condition of this stretch of road between Walvis Bay and the salt pans. There were numerous requests for the Roads Authority to broaden and resurface the road. Note: a contractors meeting between Walvis Bay Salt Refiners and Neumayer Construction is scheduled to take place in Walvis Bay early next week to determine how the construction of the wash plant would progress given the current situation. This morning at around 06h45 the bus used to transport the employees of K Neumayer was involved in an accident inbound to site on the access road. The bus had 37 passengers on it. Two Omega security and one Kwena electrical employees were included in this number and travel on the bus by prior arrangement. The bus is rated to carry 62 passengers.

Themed 'More than an apple. It's a fruit of hope', the selling of apples will start on Monday, 1 July until Wednesday, 31 July. The price for an apple remains at N$5. In 2018 the project distributed 760 000 apples, which generated an amount of N$3 million, which was handed over to CAN. The funds raised enabled the association to continue delivering on its mandate of fighting cancer in Namibia. The Bank Windhoek Cancer Apple Project was recognised as one of 17 global projects for the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) International Award for “Innovative Fundraising Models” for this exemplary approach on co-operative ways in which to help fight cancer in local communities. Between 1 March 2018 - 28 February 2019, CAN screened 3 778 women for cervical cancer, referred 1 083 females and 31 confirmed cervical cancer cases were treated in all 14 regions. More than 4 500 clinical breast examinations were conducted. A total of 788 men were screened for prostate cancer, of which 54 were referred and 17 prostate cancer diagnosis confirmed. Bank Windhoek's Managing Director, Baronice Hans, said: “Investing in the communities in which Bank Windhoek operates is a strategic objective of the Bank and this particular project has cemented our commitment to the Namibian society in the health sector.” School involvement The Bank Windhoek Cancer Apple Project will donate cash prizes to the value of N$60 000 to the Pre-Primary, Primary, Secondary and Combined Schools that order the most apples per learner. In addition, MaeruaSuperSpar will sponsors stationery vouchers to the value of N$5 000 each to the four schools who achieved first place in their category. School sales will start on Monday, 1 July 2019 and concludes on Wednesday, 31 July 2019. To level the field among competing schools, the average between the number of apples ordered and the number of learners at a school will be calculated by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC). In 2018 more than 600 Namibian schools participated. Staff fundraising efforts Another component to the Bank Windhoek Cancer Apple Project is the Staff Entrepreneurial Challenge, which tasks each Branch and Department to come up with reasonable ways of raising capital from a specific amount received from the Bank's Social Investment Fund. The challenge concludes on Monday, 30 September 2019. Funds generated from this challenge are handed over to CAN. Bank Windhoek customers are encouraged to support the Bank's Branches and Departments in their initiatives to raise money for the Project. Posters will be placed in the Branches/ Departments to indicate where, when and what they will do to raise money in support of the Apple Project. Day of the Seafarer celebrated Erongo Marine Enterprises (EME) joined the international maritime community in celebrating Day of the Seafarer on 25 June by giving special recognition to the nearly 230 crew aboard the company's two horse mackerel trawler vessels. “Our crew is the backbone of this company. Without your hard work under very difficult circumstances at sea there would be no Erongo Marine Enterprises,” Managing Director Dr Martha Uumati said in a statement to the crew. She also paid

tribute to all seafarers in the local fishing and maritime industry who through their hard work have contributed, and continue to contribute, to the economic success of Walvis Bay. Every year on 25 June the world celebrates Day of the Seafarer. The purpose of the

day is to recognise and give thanks to seafarers the world over for their unique contribution to international seaborne trade, the world economy and civil society. According to the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), nearly 90% of the world's

food, fuel, raw material and manufactured goods are delivered by sea. Often considered as the unsung heroes of global trade, seafarers have to endure many hardships and tough working conditions under extraordinary circumstances at sea, sometimes event risking their lives. In her tribute to the EME crew Dr Uumati said: “You work selflessly, within the deep seas

Pictured above: We Are On Board with gender equality – Pledging their support to gender inclusivity and fair treatment of all persons on board its vessels, irrespective of gender, Erongo Marine Enterprises crew proudly celebrated Day of the Seafarer on June 25 this year. This call was made at Omaruru last Thursday by the Deputy Minister of Mines and Energy, Kornelia Shilunga, at the inauguration of Erongo RED’s new office at the town. Minister Shilunga urged communities to refrain from vandalism and cable theft, as it hinders regional electricity distributors like Erongo RED and also Nampower at national level to deliver the service every Namibian is entitled to.

Missing birthdays, family events or weddings is the price you pay to ensure the success of our company.” The theme for this year's Day of the Seafarer celebrations focused on gender inclusivity, with a social media campaign driven by the hashtag 'IAmOnBoard with gender equality' raising global awareness. Throughout 2019 there is a strong emphasis in the maritime world on the importance and value of women within the professional ranks of this global industry. Much of this is being driven by the World Maritime Day theme, which is 'Empowering Women in the Maritime Community'. The theme supports the achieve-

ment of the United Nations Sustainable Development goals, specifically SDG 5 with the aim to 'ensure women's full and effective participation and equal opportunities for leadership at all levels of decision-making in political, economic and public life.' World Ocean's Day celebrated early in June also shone the spotlight on women and their role in the blue economy. “For the world to

achieve sustainability in the ocean, we must be gender inclusive in all blue economic activities,” Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources Hon Bernard Esau said during the official event marking World Oceans Day celebrations in Walvis Bay on 8 June. He noted that women are already making huge contributions towards the health and sustainability of our ocean and the role the resource plays in the national economy.

NiMT-shooter resumes bail application

The alleged NiMT-shooter, Ernst Lichtenstrasser’s bail application hearing resumes on Monday in the Swakopmund magistrate’s court. Lichtenstrasser (pictured some weeks ago when he first applied for bail) faces two counts of murder, after he allegedly gunned down NiMT Director Eckhart Mueller and Deputy Director Heimo Hellweig early on the morning of 15 April this year when they arrived for work at the Institute’s head office at Arandis. Lichtenstrasser made a confession of the murders to the Police shortly after his arrest, but he made an about turn and now argues he was unfairly put under pressure by the investigation team into making this confession. Namibia’s Deputy Prosecutor-General Advocate Antonia Verhoef represents the State and opposes Licthenstrasser’s bail.

Busy Bodies Montessori Pre School would like to thank all our parents, kiddies and teachers who helped with preparations, decorations and participation in Saturday's Carnival. Even though it was a cold day for a sunny theme this year, the smiles and eager participation from all made it a very proud celebration. We would like to especially thank Wesbank Transport for their support in letting us use their truck for the procession and driver Alpheus who made sure we were safely transported to and from the festivities.

Gone with the wind... The Electoral Commission of Namibia's (ECN) campaign to entice the Namibian public to register for later this year's Presidential and National Assembly Elections ran into a windy glitch this week. Officials who had to fix placards around Walvis Bay to advertise the upcoming registration campaign did not reckon with the windy conditions. The adhesive tape they used did not last minutes – at several spots in Walvis Bay placards were torn down and blown around by the wind. Pictures included here are three placards that were spotted in Sam Nujoma Avenue between 8th Road and Johnson Mabakeng Road (former 9th Road) and were basically useless for the initial intent. · Namib Times reported the matter to the ECN's operations department who undertook to take corrective measures.

Whale stranded.... Isaac Chikosi

This Humpback whale stranded near Mile 8 on Wednesday. Members of the public and marine interest groups attempted to return the whale to the sea, but it was too weak. At the time of going to press it could not yet be ascertained what this marine mammal's fate was. The whale was close to the low water mark and the tide have helped it return to the sea. Humpback whales are found in all the world's oceans and feeds on krill, plankton and small fish.

It’s official - BON Hotels Ngandu take-over BON Hotels made an official announcement this week, confirming taking over hotels in Rundu and Walvis Bay. BON Hotels already operates the BON Hotel in Swakopmund and is now expanding its footprint. Through an alliance with the Theart family in Namibia, wellknown in business circles and with a great deal of experience in the hospitality industry, BON Hotels will now expand its footprint across the country. With its entry into the Namibian market firmly entrenched through its presence in the country since 2014 via its wholly-owned hotel in Swakopmund, BON Hotels has built up a reputation for excellence in the industry, bringing with it the skills and networks needed to run a hotel operation successfully. According to Pieter van Eck, the Operations Director of BON Hotels, “Growing our Namibian presence is a strategic approach in expanding our African footprint. Entering the fourth year of BON Hotel Swakopmund's existence, we now have a good understanding of the Namibian market and we have identified the areas offering growth opportunities in Namibia. Adding two Namibian properties to our portfolio allows BON Hotels to increase our offering to our loyal guests, travel partners and BONami loyalty members.” BON Hotels, a SouthAfrican based hotel company that manages, owns and leases hotels, lodges and resorts throughout Southern Africa, as well as West and East Africa, views the potential of the Namibian market in an extremely positive light. Says, Guy Stehlik, CEO of BON Hotels, “Namibia has experienced significant growth in its tourist numbers in recent times. In fact, statistics provided by Trading Economics reflect an increase from about 80 000 tourists in 2006 to over 1,4 million a decade later. The country is attracting many new visitors from Europe, as well as South African travellers. With the tough economic times in South Africa currently, some South Africans are opting to travel closer to home, rather than to go overseas, and a road trip through Namibia is a popular choice for a

family break.” Launching on 1 July, the BON Hotel Ngandu Rundu, is situated in the north-east of the country. With a strong focus on environmental issu-

es, its location overlooking the Kavango River's southern wetlands and riverine forest makes the property ideal for travelers seeking a unique break in the best

of Africa's natural surroundings. The building was originally constructed on the ruins of an old military base used during the War of Independence. That history is, however, long past and the property is today characterised by its wealth of natural flora

and fauna, including a large collection of indigenous Aloe species. The BON Hotel Ngandu Rundu caters for a range of travelers, offering hotel bedrooms, family units, as well as campsites. “These facilities allow us to provide for all

types of guests, including backpackers and campers, who are not usually attracted to hotels,” explains Van Eck. Leisure tourists, both individual travelers and large tour groups, as well as conference delegates, are attracted to the area by the opportunities for game-viewing and

spectacular cruises down the Kunene River. The hotel also offers facilities for local businesses, such as four conference halls and a restaurant. The hotel was successfully founded in the 1990s and run until now by Oswald and Corry Theart.
