The Namibian Police in Erongo issued a stern warning yesterday to tuckshop owners in the coastal towns selling alcohol to the public without a valid liquor license. Tuck shops are home-based shops usually selling basic commodities like cigarettes, cool drinks, sweets, basic food items and air time to the public. Tuck shop owners are increasingly coming under fire for selling alcohol without liquor licenses, but also for selling alcohol seven days of the week, often from as early as four o’clock in the morning. Tuck shop owners are also making themselves guilty of selling cigarettes to under aged children and even supplying drugs. “Let this be a warning. The Namibian Police will be conducting operations to curb the illegal conduct of tuck shops. Owners and operators face arrest and would be charged in a criminal court,” police spokesperson for Erongo warrant officer Ileni Shapumba warned yesterday.

Spate of accidents raises concern for road safety Cycle
Pages 9 &10
Several accidents occurred in Walvis Bay over the weekend, leading to big concerns over road safety in the final days before the festive holiday season. Apart from accidents where vehicles crashed through garden walls in recent days, two collisions also occurred at intersections in Nangolo Mbumba Avenue on Saturday and Sunday respectively. Pictured above is on the corner of Nangolo Mbumba Avenue and 12th Road where two vehicles collided on Saturday morning. The driver of the light pick up sustained injuries and required medical attention. (See more on Page 2) Following the accidents the municipal traffic authority suspects speeding, ignoring traffic signs and drunken driving as possible causes. A renewed call was made for people to take extra care over the festive season, as there are more road users this time of the year and any form of ill discipline or reckless and negligent driving is most likely to end in accidents with negative repercussions.
