The celebration of Workers Day on 1 May, “May Day” is a day of remembrance of workers and is an important achievement in the fight by workers in recognition of their contributions to society and socio-economic development. Recognizing the fact that the day signifies awareness about some of the difficulties faced by workers in the collective endeavor to improve their working conditions, the Namibian Government stands with workers in that ongoing journey. The President of the Republic of Namibia, His Excellency Dr Hage G. Geingob in his message to the Namibian Workers said that theNamibian Government will always be on the side of workers. President Hage G. Geingob said, “The fight for independence accelerated by the struggles of workers against the exploitative and unjust colonial regime. ” According to Geingob, the rights of workers in Namibia are a fundamental right guaranteed and protected by the Constitution. “Since independence, the Namibian Government has been committed to the advancement of Namibian workers by putting in place several interventions to guarantee fairness, to protect their safety and to improve their working conditions,” the president added. In addition to legislation that guarantees and protects the rights of workers, during the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Government provided relief to employers in order to protect employees against the socio-economic scarring caused by the pandemic. Geingob said, “Although we have made significant progress as a country to guarantee safe working environments for workers, there is still much more to be done. ”

Cassinga Day will forever be a scar in the memory of Namibians Media Release On this day, 4 May 2022, the President of the Republic of Namibia, His Excellency Dr. Hage G. Geingob joins Namibians in memory of the hundreds of Namibian refugees and freedom fighters who died in the barbaric attack by the notorious colonial troops of apartheid South Africa at Cassinga in southern Angola. Today, 44 years after the brutal, senseless and inhumane massacre of Namibian

refugees, mainly women and children, on 4 May 1978, at Cassinga in southern Angola, we

still remember that painful chapter because the physical and psychological scars are deep and they remain a constant reminder that the freedom and independence of the Namibian people came at a high cost. “On this solemn day, we pause to remember our compatriots who lost their precious lives on that fateful day, May 4, 1978, on which horrific acts of violence and brutality were committed against the Namibian people. A day of memory, Cassinga Day should continue to remind Nami-

bians about the selfless sacrifices made by thousands of our countrymen and women in the course of the struggle for the independence of our motherland. It is therefore our duty to ensure that the dreams, aspirations and blood of those sons and daughters of Namibia who laid down their lives so that we can enjoy our freedom today are not betrayed. Therefore, the most befitting manner in which we can honour the memory of Cassinga Day and the sacrifices of our heroes and heroines is by

working hard, in unity, towards the realization of a better Namibia, guided by the principles of social justice, solidarity and the improvement of the standards of living of all our people. Let us therefore engage, as a collective, in actions that give deserving respect to those who lost their lives for the freedom and independence of our country. In memory of the 44th anniversary of the Cassinga Massacre, I urge all Namibians to forge ahead with the task of nation-building. Let us pull together in the same direction to build a united and prosperous Namibia for present and future generations of our country.

Danny rides for Hope

Danny Beukes to ride 600km Piquet Jacobs Well known cyclist, Danny Beukes, will be taking on 600km from Walvis Bay to Tsumeb on his bicycle, with his wife and son as support, in order to raise funds for the Tsumeb Hope Children's Centre. The Hope Children's Centre was spearheaded and run by Jeanette Theron and her late husband, Andre Theron who passed in 2021 due to COVID-19; the initiative was born in 2008 from a feeding scheme which them grew into giving vulnerable children a safe haven and family home environment. Jeanette currently houses nine children, of which eight are her permanent foster children, whilst still keeping the feeding scheme alive. Their objective reads, 'Our mission is to provide a safe place for them to live, three meals a day, an education at local schools, and as much love as we can give.' Danny and his family, Christelle and Jacques Beukes were meant to take a family holiday to the area when they decided to make use of the opportunity to raise awareness and raise funds for the centre. “I have always had a soft

spot for children, but the intention behind this idea is to celebrate heroes. The real heroes being people like Jeanette and Maureen Baard who wake up each day and make a difference. The secondary heroes are those who donate and pray. I would also like to thank the Namib Times, who has always been key to all my fundraisers from way back.” Danny will be riding to raise funds, and implores on the public to be by hero by donating N$2 per km (N$1 200), N$1 per km (N$600), N$0.50 per km (N$300), N$0.25 per km (N$150) or any amount to make this idea a reality. The donations can be paid directly to the Hope Children's Centre, please contact Jeanette Theron at 081 450 8705 or Danny Beukes at 081 128 2256 for more information.

The Swakopmund Council approved the relocation and ordered the Engineering Services Department to attend to the demarcation of trading sites of vendors at the Tennis Court parking area by measuring 16m² for each site. Once relocated, all 62 vendors are expected to continue paying their monthly rental fees as per lease agreements and they will utilize the cubicles for storage purposes during the construction period as

NovaMarine expands Technologies service offering to Walvis Bay NovaMarine, a marine safety and survival equipment service provider based in Cape Town, has expanded its technologies service offering to Walvis Bay, Namibia. The Technologies division is a specialised procurement division within NovaMarine for the supply, installation and commissioning of auxiliary marine systems for Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM's) such as Gefico, Cathelco, SKF and many more. Susan Meldrum, Divisional Manager for NovaMarine said, “We had promising engagements with the local marine market in Walvis Bay towards the end of last year. These engagements re-affirmed the need to provide locally based support to the Namibian fishing and diamond mining market. As a large portion of work stems from our ability to service our clients offshore, this expansion further makes us accessible to the West African market. At present, our Durban branch services our Richard's Bay clients on the east coast where we have seen an increase in sales over the past year.” NovaMarine Technologies holds exclusive agency agreements with Gefico and Cathelco for cathodic marine growth protection systems (MGPS), Impressed Current Corrosion Protection (ICCP) and reverse osmosis water maker systems. They are accredited distributors for Chris Marine, Victor Marine and RWO and a distributor and service agent for Daihatsu Diesel medium speed engines and aftersales services for Sub-Saharan Africa. A recent addition to the Technologies portfolio is an agreement with SKF Germany for their marine portfolio of products which allows them to procure and service a range of oily water separators, Simplex stern tube sealing systems, steering gear and

fin stabilizer systems. Richard Abbott, Technical Manager, said, “The SKF brand is internationally recognised, and their products cover a range of components necessary for the smooth running of a vessel. We have also seen an opportunity to partner with SKF to offer training to the marine industry on maintenance of their mounting and shaft alignment systems. So far, we've had successful sessions with the South African market and will be extending it to our global customers.” NovaMarine initially saw the effects of international lockdown restrictions during the pandemic, and their technicians were unable to go offshore. Offshore activity started increasing towards the end of 2021 and this year so far, they have successfully performed servicing in Angola and Senegal on the safety and survival side and in Nigeria and Ivory Coast for Technologies. Andrew Sturrock, CEO of parent company Sturrock Grindrod Maritime said, “We anticipate this expansion to be the first of many as we align the competencies within the Group to offer our clients sound technical support and ensure seamless ship movements. Our business is customer-centric and focused on operational efficiency. We strive for a 10/10 customer experience.” NovaMarine forms part of the SGM Technical division of Sturrock Grindrod Maritime, which includes marine safety and survival equipment and maintenance (NovaMarine), engineering services (Hesper and SwiftNova) and depot services (United Container Depots).

Namibia dancers scoop Gold in Spain Rudi Bowe

The Dance Sport Namibia (DSN) dancers recently scooped gold in Dance Musical category at the Barcelona Dance International Competition held in Spain. The Namibian Sports Commission awarded national colours to the national dance sports team that consisted of 19 dancers between nine and 44 years old and two officials that competed in 140 different choreographies. The competition saw 12 countries and 190 athletes from four continents fiercely competing in the three-day event. DSN was represented in five categories, namely: Contemporary, Folk, Hip-Hop, Musical and Pedagogy, and the competition were judged per category. All the dance items within a specific category counted towards the final mark for the teams. Namibian dancers did not disappoint, as they clinched an assortment of medals in the five cate-

gories, led by a gold medal in the Dance Musical category, and three silver medals in the Dance Folk, Dance Hip-Hop and Dance Contemporary compositions. Dance Sport Namibia secretary general Venancius Rukero said that the Namibian dance team won medals in all categories we entered, and we are extremely proud of this achievement. Rukero said, “our dancers spent countless hours preparing for this event and we are pleased with the results. “The international jury each year awards five special awards overall. This includes Best Dance Team, Sissi Award for Dance, Artistic Direction, Special Mention of the Jury and Barcelona Dance Award 2022” Rukero added. “We were thrilled to

announce that we won the Special Mention of the Jury award. Our contemporary dance item, titled 'The Lord is Coming', took away the breath of the audience and also of the jury. It communicated a strong message of hope and truth,” he said. Rukero applauded the team for a splendid performance and for making the country proud at a highly competitive platform, such as the Barcelona International Dance Competition. “It was an honour and privilege to represent our beautiful country abroad. We hope that this is the beginning of many more international events. We would like to thank our gold sponsor Pupkewitz Megatech and all our parents and colleagues who assisted with our trip to Barcelona” Rukero said.

The Namibian Electronic Sports Association (NESA) is preparing for what is most likely the biggest esports season in the country yet. NESA will be hosting national qualifiers for 6 game titles, all titles selected by the International Esports Federation (IESF) for the 2022 World Esports Championship (WE Championship). The first qualifier tournaments start on Saturday 7 May with CS:GO, DotA2 and MLBB set to take place online over the span of the next two months with Tekken 7 and eFootball 2022 both run as physical tournaments on Saturday 7 May and Saturday 4 June 2022. PUBG will also be online, running on two days of which the first round is on 14 May and the second round on 11 June. NESA Public Relations Officer + Acting Treasurer Salomé de Bruyn said that NESA starts the search for the next Namibian Esports Team, to compete in the African Regional Games for a chance to wear the Namibian colours in Bali, Indonesia, at the WE Championships in November/December. De Bruyn said “The selected PC titles are Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) and DotA2, both which are played in teams of 5. For

console, specifically PlayStation, the titles are Tekken 7 and eFootball 2022, which are played solo by athletes. With the mobile titles being Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB), played in teams of 5, and PUBG Mobile, played in teams of 4”. “What makes this year more sensational than the previous years? This year, for the first time, mobile games are involved” De Bruyn said. “NESA will especially be looking out for the female CS:GO athletes as the WE Championship will feature the first CS:GO tournament this year” she added. All interested Esports athletes should check out the NESA platforms and get involved as soon as they can, and not miss this once in a lifetime opportunity. The end of day one however saw Stefanus with a one shot lead over Kevin. In n klipharde westryd laas naweek in

Verversings asook n kontant kroeg sal beskikbaar wees. Hekgeld is N$30.00 per volwassene en N$ 20.00 per skolier asook N$ 20.00 per motor en N$ 50.00 per coolbox.
