Swakopmund municipality’s Acting CEO inside LHU Swartz arrested for drunken driving innoStaff Reporter
The Swakopmund municipality's Acting Chief Executive Officer, Marco Swartz, was arrested on a charge of driving under the influence of an intoxicating liquor on Wednesday evening. He made a first court appearance in the Swakopmund magistrates court yesterday morning. Details about what exactly led to the arrest remain sketchy at this time, as various senior officials were not available for comment. According to an anonymous source Swartz was arrested on his way back home from the Rossmund Golf Club at around 21:00. The Swakopmund municipal traffic department, the Namibian Police and the Swakopmund Neighborhood Watch con-
ducted a joint traffic operation on Wednesday night. Sources revealed the police set-up a roadblock on the B2 highway east of Swakopmund. Various drivers approaching Swakopmund turned off just before the roadblock onto the bypass road leading east of DRC – this allegedly included Swartz. Little did these drivers know there was a second road-block on this bypass road. According to sources Swartz was stopped by a
junior traffic officer. Due to the high-profile case a senior traffic official, Appolus Motinga, was called to the scene. Motinga could not be reached for comment yesterday. Swartz was requested to undergo a breathalyzer test. It was understood by namib times his reading was 0.8 milligrams per 1000 milliliters of breath. The legal limit is 0.37 milligrams per 1000 milliliters.
Manganese in water- vates NOT toxic The Municipality of Walvis Bay released a public notice on Wednesday in regard to the recent discolouration of water in Walvis Bay. According to the notice, the discolouration and possible low water pressure in some areas is as a result of restoration done to a break in NamWater's supply pipe on Wednesday and caused the water to have higher levels of manganese. Manganese is a mineral that naturally occurs in rocks and soil and may also be present due to under-ground pollution sources. Manganese is fre-

What was supposed to be a special day-trip for Suné January, Miss Namibia 2017, visiting the coast turned sour for her on Monday when she fell victim to a smash-and-grab incident. January travelled to Walvis Bay along with her grandmother, younger sister and cousins on Monday for the day. Whilst in the harbour town, they also drove through to Dune 7. Upon their return to Swakopmund, they stopped
north of Langstrand on the dirt road that leads in the direction of Patrysberg. They were travelling in her official vehicle, which is branded "Miss Namibia". They walked to the water. Upon their return they discovered to their
shock the vehicle's driver's window was smashed. It was clearly a smashand-grab incident which now has become a frequent occurance between Walvis Bay and Swakopmund. Continued on page 2

The culprits managed to get away with Januarys' grandmother's handbag and wallet. January drove to the police station at Aphrodite Beach, but to their further dismay the station was closed. This forced them to rush through to Walvis Bay with splinters of glass all over the interior of her car, and this with three children. After reporting the matter to the police, January received a phone call to inform her that the stolen bag had been found with all the contents including documents and medication, except the cash of course. A child was allegedly found in possession of the handbag in Kuisebmond, stating that their mother requested for it to be thrown next to the main road. The increase of similar incidents in and around the coastal towns, that with the general rise in criminal activities, has residents worried especially ahead of the festive season. The frequency of crime, commonly directed at tourists and other visitors, puts the coastal towns in a bad light and evidently has a negative effect on the tourism industry.

The new soup kitchen was made possible and built by the German national, Mr Georg Quandt, of the Deutscher Namibischer Hilfsfonds 'Quandt e.V." But it was the vision of Anja Rohwer, a well-known personality running the non-profit organisation, "Helping Hands." According to Quandt, the organisation has been in existence for 25 years. Founding Father Dr Sam Nujoma has been part of the organisation for 22 years. During the inauguration, Quandt said his team has travelled more than a 100 000 kilometres and bought about 50 tons of material and equipment to construct a hospital and five school buildings in Namibia so far. "Hanganeni is part of this project. During this time about twelve million Euros have been spend on these projects", he explained. He revealed his team will return to Namibia soon, and the help he is offering has not ended. Quandt also confirmed in the next few weeks, Hanganeni Primary School will be the beneficiary of another project: a playground. During the inauguration ceremony on Tuesday the children expressed gratitude for the new soup kitchen, saying that the school feeding program is very important as most learners do not receive lunch boxes from home and the "okatete" they receive at school is their only meal for the day. "Okatete" is a thin porridge. The Namibian School Feeding Program was launched in the early 90's in response to the educational and nutritional needs of about 45 000 vulnerable children from drought affected communities during the time. "Today, the number of school feeding beneficiaries have tripled. So much so the ministry alone is not able to run this program without the involvement of private enterprises and individuals. We urge the communities to make efforts towards acquiring sufficient non-food items and to erect necessary shelters at schools", said Mrs Monica !Gawises during the ceremony. She is the Principal of the Walvis Bay circuit under the Erongo Education Directorate.
Swakopmund one step closer to regulate the use of shopping bags Erwin Leuschner
The Swakopmund Town Council has paved the way to develop a bylaw to regulate the use of plastic shopping bags. Also, to charge a levy for the use of plastic shopping bags and for the funds to be channeled to a unique environmental fund. The fund was also approved. According to the agenda, the recently approved environmental fund is in lieu of developing a related by-law to legislate the use of plastic bags. All funds deposited into the environmental fund will be applied for the funding of various environmental projects. "This will be beneficial to council and the Swakopmund community at large," it states in the agenda. The development of a specific by-law regulating the usage of plastic bags is spearheaded by a newly founded environmental committee, consisting of representatives from the Ministry of Environment and Tourism, the NACOMA project, the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources, the Otto
Herrigel Trust and the Municipality of Swakopmund. The representatives of the municipality include the environmental officer as well as the General Manager: Health Services. The committee will manage projects benefiting from the fund. The idea of charging a nominal fee for a plastic bag has been on the cards since 2009. The idea initially failed after certain stakeholders were not responding positively to the idea. The Swakopmund municipality halted the process, waiting for the City of Windhoek to develop a by-law all local authorities could use countrywide. Unfortunately, this has not yet transpired. The by-law will oblige supermarkets and businesses to charge customers a fee for plastic bags, in the hope of eliminating the illiterate use of plastic bags and to curb pollution.

FNB Namibia confirmed this week that a “very limited number of our retail customers have experienced card fraud on their accounts in the last few days.” This response comes in the wake of a client, who's account was emptied within seconds after allegedly being hacked. namib times reported on the incident in Tuesday's edition and it created huge public outcry. “While FNB Namibia's own local security processes have not been compromised, these identified customers are being assisted and refunded where appropriate”, said Elzita Beukes, Group Communications Manager at FNB Namibia Holdings. She did not say how many customers were affected nor how the card fraud took place. She added that “our customers remain our highest priority; should anyone have any concerns regarding their card accounts, please contact our helpline (061) 299 2222 for advice or after hours if necessary to put a stop to your card immediately at (061) 299 2999.” The fraud mentioned above took place in Swakopmund recently. After the customer swiped his card to buy at a local supermarket, he started receiving one SMS after the other of transactions taking place on his account. The transactions were apparently made in France. The SMS's did not cease until his account was scooped empty. “The bank has in the meantime said that they will refund the money that was stolen”, he said to namib times. He added that the bank did not elaborate on how the fraud took place, or what he should do to in future to prevent such an incident. “I was only told that my account is safe. I really hope it is”, the customer concluded. The question he has is simple: if it happened once, what guarantees are in place this will not repeat itself again?
“...BRP successfully commissioned in March and operating above design. The extent of this project's success has far-reaching implications for the Langer Heinrich operation now and into the future. BRP is expected to exceed design benefit by up to 100% and establish a new paradigm in carbonate uranium processing.

A sedan vehicle veered off the road and overturned on the B2 route, just 15 km from Karibib toward Okahandja on Tuesday afternoon. The vehicle with four occupants had a tire blowout. Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported. One of the occupants' injuries was described as less serious, whilst the remaining occupants sustained minor injuries. Two unrelated incidents occurred on the C35 route, on Sunday and Monday respectively. On Sunday afternoon, a vehicle left the road and overturned on a bend after the driver apparently lost control. The accident reportedly occurred 30km from Uis towards Henties Bay. All three occupants of the vehicle required medical assistance, though their injuries were described as less serious and minor. Approximately 55km from Henties Bay toward Uis, a double cab pick-up truck veered off the road and overturned, after the driver lost control. The three occupants, in-clu-ding the driver, sustained serious injuries whilst another three sustained minor injuries. The injured occupants were transported to Swakopmund initially, but due to the nature of their injuries, two were subsequently transported to Windhoek.

Truck spills charcoal in Swakopmund A truck hauling charcoal to Walvis Bay lost a part of its load on Tuesday evening in Swakopmund. A stretch of Moses Garoëb Road was covered in fragments of charcoal, as the driver did not initially notice that a sling bag holding the charcoal in break bulk ripped. Some passers-by were quick on scene with plastic bags, as it is not every day the opportunity to collect charcoal comes by. The Swakopmund traffic department was also called to the scene and monitored the clean-up of the road. By Wednesday morning there were no more traces of charcoal on the road, thanks to a very efficient clean-up.

A SPIRITUAL SOLUTION TO THE ECONOMIC PROBLEM *Among the results of the manifestation of spiritual forces will be that the human world will adapt itself to a new social form, the justice of God will become manifest throughout human affairs and human equality will be universally established. The poor will receive a great bestowal and the rich attain eternal happiness. For although at the present time the rich enjoy the greatest luxury and comfort, they are nevertheless deprived of eternal happiness; for eternal happiness is contingent upon giving and the poor are everywhere in the state of abject need. Through the manifestation of God's great equity the poor of the world will be rewarded and assisted fully and there will be a readjustment in the economic conditions of mankind so that in the future there will not be the abnormally rich nor the abject poor. The rich will enjoy the privilege of this new economic condition as well as the poor, for owing to certain provision and restriction they will not be able to accumulate so much as to be burdened by its management, while the poor will be relieved from the stress of want and misery.
A UNIVERSAL AUXILIARY LANGUAGE *Bahá'u'lláh has proclaimed the adoption of a universal language. A language shall be agreed upon by which unity will be established in the world. Each person will require training in two languages, his native tongue and the universal auxiliary form of speech. This will facilitate intercommunication and dispel the misunderstandings which the barriers of language have occasioned in the world. Walvis Bay residents are appalled at the news of a series of rape cases being investigated which involves five minor girls allegedly sexually assaulted by a resident of the town in a flat in the period June 2016 to June 2017. The outrage is amplified by the limited information available of the alleged suspect, who is known only by a first name "Mr Alex”. This unspeakable revelation was made by the parents of one of the minor girls, after they seemingly grew suspicious of the girls' unaccounted whereabouts during some days over the time period in question. They investigated and made this appalling discovery. When the truth came to light, the distressed parents immediately reported the matter to the police and laid charges on Friday. It is alleged the suspect, only known to the girls as 'Mr Alex', would pick them up in Kuisebmond on several occasions and take them to an apartment where he would then have sex with them and perform various sexual acts with them. According to the West Coast Safety Initiative two people received medical treatment at the scene and were transported to the Walvis Bay State Hospital by the St Gabriel Community Ambulance Service for further medical care. Allan Roodt Near the "old police roadblock"? So in other words it was used just for a limited period of time and they got lazy and stopped using it? For what reason are police not manning the roadblock anymore? Luckily for us the B2 road is extremely safe and there are never accidents or drunk drivers on that road (sarcasm). FNB Namibia has launched a campaign in which employees as well as the general public are advised of the culture of zero tolerance for misconduct upheld at FNB Namibia in all aspects of business. “Today, more than ever it seems as if corruption, fraud, theft, negligence or misconduct is rife worldwide and if not nipped in the bud, could lead to countries and economies losing millions of dollars which
could have been spent on much needed educational or health initiatives,” says Edla Kaumbi, Ethics and Integrity Manager at FNB Namibia. FNB Namibia conducted an internal survey and from the culture risk assessment it became clear that people are afraid to speak up. “We, however, encourage everyone to speak up against misconduct. There is ZERO tolerance for misconduct and it is our collective responsibility to get rid of it because we want to be a great Namibian business creating a better world. Whistleblowing is international best practice and we should ensure that no one gets away with unethical, unprofessional or fraudulent behaviour. Everybody needs to understand that not reporting something means supporting it and this way we perpetuate bad conduct by doing nothing about it.” Edla concluded by saying that a values driven, high performance culture at FNB Namibia upholds all four strategic P's of the bank, namely profit, planet, people and partnerships. Please report any misconduct or unethical behaviour on our ethics line: 0800 00 33 12 from your landline or 081 918 47 from your mobile or visit: https://firstrandethicsoffice.com For more information, please contact Elzita Beukes, Communications Manager at FNB Holdings on telephone: (+264 61) 299 2125, elzita.beukes@fnbnamibia.

Namib High grade 12 class of 2017 Bennie se Rooi Lorrie weer tuis receives invites to Prom Erwin Leuschner
Dis deel van my familie se erfenis,” sê Sharon Kruger.

Alles was daar.
Bennie Pretorius is in 2000 by Bennie se Rooi Lorrie oorlede.

Music as the Kaleidoscope of Life When thinking about a Kaleidoscope, it is easy to remember looking through those telescope-like tubes consisting of mirrors and coloured glass, turning it to see a different colourful pattern created by each twist. It provides hours of entertainment and a kind of satisfaction to see the colours appear and disappear into an array of patterns resembling a church window. This is exactly the message that Kaleido-
skoop, a young and upcoming band from Stellenbosch, South Africa wants to deliver through their music. Kaleidoskoop's aim is to bring a message of hope by looking at life in a new and fresh way and to portray this message
through the kaleidoscope of their music. With their various instruments and complimenting voices, they capture their audiences to see that life is not as mundane as it may seem, but that it rather bursts into colourful patterns with every twist and turn. The band consists of two permanent members, Jouba Jordaan and Anique Jordaan, collaborating with various other artists to produce a unique sound that imitates a kaleidoscope that brings a new pattern to every new song and lyric that they produce. They have already reached great heights with their music,
with receiving a Tempo Award for the Best Contemporary Album for their previous album, Vars Uitgekerf, and also being named Best Newcomer and Best Contemporary Album at the Ghoema Awards. Kaleidoskoop will be part of the entire Walvisfees. Their first appearance will be Friday night, 6 October. At 19:00, Jo Nickol, one of the local artists, will be performing, and at 20:00, Kaleidoskoop will take the stage. On Saturday, they will spend the day at the festival, entertaining us from time to time, enjoying the Walvis Bay community and celebrating life. On Sunday, they will join us at the thanksgiving service, which will be held at the Jan Wilken
Stadium in the Walvisfees tent at 09:00. They will also play a part in the service. Let us take Kaleidoskoop's message of hope and embrace life by looking through the kaleidoscope of their music. vom Hocker Sind Sie eventuell handysüchtig?

Denn man erreicht Etappenziele.

THANK YOU A very special thank you to the Swakopmund SPCA and the volunteers who walk the dogs to the dunes on Sundays. It is wonderful to see that you support conservation by keeping the dogs only on the dunes, away from all the bushes, and also picking up ALL the dog's faeces. Thank you for being an inspiration to all who want to walk with their dogs in the Dorob National Park. From Chantelle & Living Desert Tours.

God saw her getting tired, And a cure was not to be. He wrapped her in his loving arms And whispered “Come with me.” She suffered much in silence, Her spirit did not bend She faced her pain with courage, Until the very end. She tried so hard to stay with us But her fight was not in vain, God took her to His loving home And freed her from the pain.

Stephanie Entin (Moller) * 25-11-1968 + 25-09-2017 We watched her suffer, day by day; It caused us bitter grief; To see her slowly pine away; And could not give relief. Her weary hours and day of pain; Her troubled nights are past; And in our aching hearts we know; She has found sweet rest at last. 'Tis sweet to know we will meet again; Where parting is no more; only gone before God knows how much I miss her; He counts the tears I shed; and whispers, “Hush, she only sleeps; your wife is not dead. Some day, some time, my years shall see; Her face I loved so well. Some day, some time, her hand I'll clasp; And never say farewell.
Nicky & Luka
Stephanie Entin (Moller) * 25-11-1968 + 25-09-2017 A light from our family is gone, A voice we love is stilled. A place is vacant in the home which never can be filled We have to mourn the loss of one, We would've loved to keep, But God who surely loved her best, Has finally made her sleep, After a lifetime of her love and joy. And music to fill our ears, God leaves these wondrous memories To help us through our tears. We will love and miss you always Teh.

Until we meet again A light from our lives has gone A voice we loved is still. A place is vacant within our hearts Which never can be filled. A bouquet of beautiful memories Sprayed with a million tears. We wish God could have spared you If just for a few more years We hold you close within our hearts To walk with us through out our lives. Until we meet again We pray that God has given you The crown you've truly won.

Okinawan Goju-Ryu Karate Namibia is very proud to announce that Sensei Nico Maritz of the Walvis Bay Goju-Ryu Karate Club has been awarded the senior grade of 5th Dan (5th Degree Black Belt).
Sensei Nico Maritz successfully completed the grading test in front of a grading panel consisting of Sensei Bakkies Laubscher, 9th Degree Black Belt, and Sensei Carl Van Der Merwe, 7th Degree Black Belt. Sensei Nico Maritz is only the fourth person to achieve this senior grade in the 38 years history of Okinawan Goju-Ryu Karate in Namibia. Black Belts are not easily awarded in Okinawan Goju-Ryu Karate. The Black Belt grading system has a minimum waiting period off for example 5 years between 4th Degree and 5th Degree Black Belt. In the period between Black Belt gradings, there is a minimum amount of karate seminars have to be attended to increase technical skills. A candidate's contribution to develop karate not only on the floor, but also off the floor, is evaluated, as well as the responsibility taken for students and organisational affairs. Namibian Karate can indeed be proud to have another senior karate instructor to share knowledge with other Namibians.

First Ever Currie Cup Game To Be Played In Swakopmund WINDHOEK DRAUGHTELWITSCHIAS VS BOLAND KAVALIERS Tomorrow Swakopmund will be the host of the first ever Currie Cup game to be played along the Namibian Coast at Central Sports Field in Vineta. Gates open at 09:00 with various school games to be played before the curtain raiser match between Swakopmund Barbarians and Walvis Bay Barbarians which kicks off at 12:15. At 15:00 we will see the Windhoek Draught Welwitschias lock horns with the Boland Cavaliers for an epic game of rugby. To give a bit of background about this prestigious competition and how it came to be, the Currie Cup is one of the oldest rugby competitions in South Africa, with the first games played in 1889 but it was only in 1892 that it became officially known as the Currie Cup. The competition had its humble beginnings as an inter-province competition in 1884, but when the South African Rugby Boardwas founded in 1889 it decided to organise a national competition that would involve representative teams from all the major unions. The original participating unions were Western Province, Griqualand West, Transvaal and Eastern Province. The first tournament was held in Kimberley and was won by Western Province. For a prize they received a silver cup donated by the South African Rugby Board. The story of how the Currie Cup came to be, comes from the first overseas rugby team to tour South Africa in 1891, The British Isles, who carried with them a particularly precious bit of cargo. Among the bags, boots and balls was a golden cup given to them by Sir Donald Currie, owner of Union-Castle Lines, the shipping company that transported them to the southern tip of Africa. Sir Donald was clear with his instructions – hand this trophy over to the team in South Africa that gives you the best game; and after a spirited display where the unbeaten British Lions narrowly won 3-0, Griqualand West became the first ever holders of the Currie Cup. They then handed the trophy over to the South African rugby board and it became the floating trophy for the Currie Cup competition. Now, a lot has changed in this completion since 1891 and many teams has come and go. In 2015, it was announced that the Welwitschias would return to playing in the Currie Cup competition on an annual basis from 2016 onward. Before Namibia gained its independence in 1990, the team, as South West Africa, played in the Currie Cup. The team achieved their best result in the 1988 season, where they finished third. Now after 126 successful years of this prestigious competition, a Currie Cup game will be played in Swakopmund on Saturday the 7th of October 2017 between the Windhoek Draught Welwitschias and Boland Cavaliers. An historic event indeed as this will be a very first for the competition and Swakopmund as a Town. This historic match will however not have been made possible was it not for our team sponsors Windhoek Draught, FNB, Paratus Telecom and Pupkewitz Toyota as well as our venue sponsors Swakopmund Hotel & Entertainment Centre, Steckel's Toyota and Cars & Guides. Then of course the hosts, Namibian Rugby Union and West Coast Sharks Rugby Club as well as all other parties involved which contributed to make Saturday a great day of rugby. The game will be played that the Swakopmund Central Sports Field in Vineta.

Desert Iron and Steel Golf Club Desert Storm hits Championships A really large field for two rounds on one day, well done to all players. At the end of the day, and a very long day it was, it was Gert Olivier who played the better golf on the day to pip the coastal champion Kevin Wentzel by a 4 shot margin to win the DESERT IRON AND STEEL trophy and be crowned as CLUB CHAMPION for 2017. Well done Gert all the hard work has really paid off. Best overall nett was won by club captain Herman Smidt on 140 while the best nett runner up was Gordon Damster on 141. 'A' division: best nett was won by Jason Barnard on 141 with Rocco Viljoen runner up on 142. Best gross was won by Lu-Andre Duvenhage on 155 while Morne Roux was runner up on 158. 'B' division: best nett was won by David Peake on 144 with Wouter van Wijk was second on 146. Best gross was won by Barend von Nieuwholtz on 169 with Willie van Zyl was second on 173. 'C' division: best nett was won by Emile Vilbert [snr] on 141 with Andre Barnard second on 145. Best gross was won by Heini Franken on 177 with Sergio Fig second on 174. Wilma van der Merwe won the ladies section and is our ladies champ for 2017, mooi gespeel Wilma. Estelle Bothma won the ladies best nett on 143. The junior champion for the year is Marthinus Marais with Millie Mls winning the best nett. At the prize giving Desmond Benson from DESERT IRON AND STEEL handed out the prizes. On the photos he is with Wilma and Gert. Well done to Herman and our starter, photographer, commentator and scorer Darryl for their efforts, but most of all thanks to Desmond and Dean for their continued sponsorship of our club championships. Looking at the winners over the past few weeks I herewith put out a challenge - the committee will take on the club. I will sponsor the trophy and hereby appoint Wouter, Nardo and Wayne [as past ex committee members] as captains of the 'rest of the club'. I think the event should be staged as the official opening of the season and year on 13 January, but let's talk about it. UNLESS YOU ARE CHICKEN. Bring it on brothers [and sisters] we are ready to kick butt. Darryl could be our non-playing captain, if not Darryl you will have to pull a hammy a week before the event. Also attached are the TRAVEL MAGIC RACE TO CAPE TOWN standings. Only the top 20 players go through for October, and Andre made the cut on a technical count out, lowest handicap wins and poor old Gunter lost the count out. All scores revert to zero and at the end of this month only the top 10 will go through to the next round. So that is it….subs were due and if you have not paid you are no longer a member and will now have to pay visitors fees, and as such are not eligible to win a prize. I will be sending the list of all ex members out by Wednesday just so we don't have any confusion as to who has not paid. If you have any queries please contact me soonest The programme for the next few weeks is as follows so please do you planning accordingly Sat 7 October PISCS medal Sat 14th Manica and the Windhoek open Fri 20th CHAIN golf fundraiser
Sat 21st Blue bulls v WP Sat 28th Par three competitions Sat 4th November Rock group and the Omeya open Fri 10th Save the Rhino day at Rossmund Sat 11th Indongo Toyota Sat 18th PISCS medal Sat 25th Namib Mills Four of our players were away for the annual MUNICIPAL games in Witbank and a great comeback on the last day saw Andre, Alistair, Deville and Piet win the competition. Well done guys although not representing the club we are happy that our club is advertised where our member go. The draw was not won last week as Christo Muller was not at the club so it is up to 1 100.00 this weekend. All members are please requested NOT TO mess with the music system. All out music has been lost and deleted, probably not intentionally but it is all gone. You all can imagine how devastated Morne is. But seriously guy, the music system is now off limits. We have spent a few bob on the upgrade of the music and video system and now Darryl has to redo the whole lot again – thanks Darryl. This weekend Lu-Andre and Evette will be taking the plunge at about 16h00 on Saturday.
