Trio to make formal bail applications on 19 Sept. Floris Steenkamp The three Walvis Bay residents who were nabbed over the weekend for trying to sell two elephant tusks to undercover police officers will have to wait to 19 September to make formal bail applications. Dirk Vermeulen (51) and Edgar Clarke (41) were arrested over the weekend at Gracemeare flats in Fairways Estate in Walvis Bay after two elephants tusks were found in their possession. They appeared in the magistrate's court on Monday for the alleged contravention of Section 4(1) (a) and (b) of Act 9 of 2008 (as amended in 2009). On Monday a third suspect, Michael Lusse (60), was arrested. Lusse appeared in court on the same charges on Tuesday. The magistrate ordered the three suspects to remain in custody, pending a formal bail application on 19 September. Vermeulen is represented by lawyer Mr Ugéne Thomas. Clarke is represented by L Heyman. Lusse is represented by Esta Steyn.

“Barbaric”

Walvis Bay mayor strongly condemns killing of Kuisebmond woman by lover Floris Steenkamp

Walvis Bay's mayor Alderman Immanuel Wilfried on Tuesday night condemned as barbaric and violent acts the latest increase in extreme cases of domestic violence, specifically women murdered by male partners in their love relationships. The mayor made specific reference to an incident in Kuisebmond over the weekend where a woman was murdered by her lover.

No increase.... Although the market prices for refined petroleum products fell globally during August, and normal market reasoning would dictate lower fuel import prices as a result, a weaker Rand/US Dollar prevented the scale to tip in favour of the Namibian fuel consumer.

In the light of the above, the Ministry of Mines and Energy announced this week that fuel prices will remain unchanged during September. Under these circumstances there is still some positive news: oil companies are currently experiencing an over-recovery on 95 Octane unleaded petrol of N$16,946 cents per litre and diesel at N$20,915 cents per litre. This overrecovery effectively absorbs the 25 cents per litre fuel tax increase the Ministry of Finance imposes as from 1 September. The fuel tax increase that came into force on 1 September is from 65 cents per litre to 95 cents per litre. Had there been no significant over-recoveries, a fuel price increase would have been on the table. “Recently we have seen an increase in extreme domestic violence cases. Some members of our society are resorting to murdering their loved ones and have no control of their anger. This past weekend in Kuisebmond, one of our residents lost her life at the hands of her so-called lover”, the mayor said in his keynote address during Tuesday night's monthly council meeting, held at Council

Chambers at the civic centre. Adding: “Like many other Namibians who take pride in being citizens of this country, I strongly condemn these barbaric and violent acts. It is not fair that valuable members of society should live in fear. As men we should take pride in protecting the most vulnerable members of society, our women and children, not resorting to hurting

them emotionally, physically or killing them”. The alleged murderer made a first appearance in court this week (see page 4). Picture of the alleged killer Phillipus Hafeni Haihambo below:
