Windhoek Police hot on the heels of coastal resident which fled accident scene last month

JOURNALISTS Sharlien Tjambari Cell +264 81 788 8155 sharlien@namibtimes.net

The Namibian Police’s Traffic Division in Windhoek believes they have made a breakthrough in the search for a female coastal resident who was involved in a collision in the capital city last month and then fled the scene with the damaged vehicle.

Ironically the vehicle into which this woman slammed, before she fled the scene, has a Walvis Bay registration mark. The vehicle with the Walvis Bay registration mark overturned as a result of the collision. It appears on the picture above with a member of the Windhoek City Police attending to the scene. The newspaper learnt reliably that the Namibian Police in Windhoek is in the process of formulating charges against the woman, where after a warrant for her arrest would be issued. It would be forwarded to the Walvis Bay police to carry out the arrest and transfer the suspect in custody to Windhoek. It was further established the woman was not alone in the vehicle at the time of the accident, but was accompanied by a friend that also resides at the coast.

Firefighter graduates to be posted to airports Madelaine Laubscher The Namibian Airports Company (NAC) hosted a graduation ceremony for airport rescue and firefighting intakes on Friday. These graduates will soon be deployed to three airports countrywide. Mia Davids, NACspokesperson said they take special pride in such an event. The Airport Manager, Anton Theart, said: “I am honoured to witness this graduation. For the past 12 months these students have undergone vigorous training as fire and rescue officers. We appreciate they are willing to accept the risks of going along with this career. We welcome you all aboard. You will be placed at either the Walvis Bay Airport, Eros Airport or Hosea Kotako International Airport.” Mr Riaan Cilliers from Indiza Fire and Training Services (Pty) Ltd congratulated the graduates on their achievement. “We all know that it did not come easy. To be thrown into the deep end by immediate exposure to an airport environment is not easy. I must say you did extremely well and we are very proud of your achievement over a very short period of time. You are not only dealing with your own lives, but also that of your fellow employees and the public at large. I am proud to be associated with you. It is a privilege to work for the NAC. Our number one priority

is the safety of our passengers and you set the highest standard. Out of 21 modules we ran on the firefighter course, some students achieved up to 15 distinctions as far as the training program is concerned. That is absolutely amazing. In seven of the 21 examinations, one student achieved 100% in all seven examinations. We urge you to use the knowledge you have gained and never be afraid to learn,” he said. The Strategic Executive from the Business Strategy section, Ms Toska Sem added that she is honoured to note that the graduation day has become a reality. “The NAC had a shortage in terms of fire fighting rescuers. It was thus a bold step for us to take in 53 fire training officers of which we witnessed 21 of them graduating. We hope you all will put theory into practice once we deploy you to your respective airports. You have gone through a lot of training and there is a lot more waiting for you. The NAC invested close to N$1.6 million for this training program to ensure that we are able to provide the necessary training in terms of any eventualities or incidents that might occur.

We will continue to monitor you. In addition, the airport was issued a 12 month li-cence by the director of civil aviation on 30 November, so we are now fully compliant and able to source international airlines to come to our airport. We thus re-quire from you all to work with dedication and passion. We want to add that the Walvis Bay airport is one of the airports that we have earmarked for cargo we have obtained our licence, we are busy with the upgrading of the terminal building which we are expecting to be completed of by the first quarter of January 2016. We are also busy upgrading our runway through the Ministry of Works and Transport and we hope to provide more airlines and attract cargo development to Walvis Bay Airport. That fits in well with the logistic hub concept as we are all aware at the coast that there is a lot of mineral companies and fish which is trucked out of Walvis Bay to SA. We would like to fly it out of Namibia which is obviously much cheaper as opposed to trucking. I am delighted that this day realised. I am confident that you will give it your full effort.”

Elites must stop eating alone, feeding foreigners - start to

empower the poor Dear editor please allow me a space in your informative newsprint to express my displeasure on how our Namibian cream of the crop argue Namibians to start their own businesses, while they are empowering foreigners. I am 100% backing some our leaders who argue fellow country men and women to start up their own businesses, even though majority of them only say it for the sake making political clamour. The leading aim of any private business is to make denomination. When people start their businesses, employments are created and joblessness is diminished to a certain extend. These can be permanently or temporarily. I am always distressed when of our leaders preach “start your businesses” or “Don't wait for the government to create employment for you”. The very same people who argue people to start businesses are the ones awarding government tenders to foreigners (giving jobs to foreigner). These elites drive their dark labelled Range Rovers and Mercedes Benz past street vendors or open- market, going to eat their kangaroo meat in classy hotels. Politicians just proved us wrong when one politician called people “Omake vafyoona' nye” truthfully meaning “clap hands you poor people” and again when our tax money was mercilessly spent on one politician who boarded in a hotel. The logic questions are: Will the government accord the same benefit to all new government employees from outside Windhoek? Who is going to support small businesses the elites argue people to start up? When it comes to Business

loans, entrepreneurs are required to have collaterals if they want loans. It is truly not easy to own a property or assets that can be look upon as collaterals. While the main reason for going to a financial institution is to get financial support that will empower entrepreneurs to buy assets, properties and create employment opportunities. I am arguing our leaders to change their mentality of empowering foreigners while people who voted them into power are anguish in poverty. I am always exasperated when I hear a government tenders given to foreign owned company and I never heard of any Namibian company awarded a tenders in China, Italy or Korea republic. Our law makers have been sleeping in parliament for the 25 years without coming up with laws that can protect our people in small industries. It is very disgraceful that apartheid laws still exist and enforced 25 years after independence. Members of parliament, who served for two terms or more, are truly failure. A message to my fellow youth is: Don't let yourself be a tool of the cream of the crop but rather tell them what your businesses and community needs. In his acceptance speech, Wilfred acknowledged Chief Executive Officers of the municipality that he has worked with over the past years, such as Fanie du Preez and Augustinus Katiti, and Muronga Haingura who is the current CEO. “From all these personalities and countless

others I have learnt to take direction, criticism and compliments, and I hope to improve upon these and additional qualities which are essential in my role as Mayor,” he said. During his speech he acknowledged the pivotal role played by all the Mayors who have spearheaded the exponential progress of Walvis Bay since Reintegration in 1994, Manuel de Castro, Theresia Samaria, King Mandume Muatunga, Derek Klazen and Uilika Nam-

bahu. “We will always be grateful for their sterling contributions. At the same time, I pay our collective respects to those councillors who are no longer with us, but also played a commendable role in building this city, namely Jan Wilken, Tutaleni Ugwanga, Matheus Kayele and Kaino Andre,” the mayor said. The council goes in recess from 16 December 2015 to 24 January 2016 and the next council meeting will be held on 26 January.

Santa by bike

The Live-to-Ride bikers club hosted its annual Toy Run in Walvis Bay on Sunday in conjunction with the Walvis Bay Rotary Club. A good harvest of toys was the result as dozens of bikers turned out for the event. Non-bikers too did their bit. A mass ride started at the Raft Restaurant and proceeded through Walvis Bay’s central business district from 11:00. The bikers congregated on the parking lot of Woermann Brock Walvis Bay where Rotarians were waiting with a giant bag. Soft toys, educational toys and many more soon filled the bag to the brim. These gifts will be handed to less fortunate children.

Pictures: This community initiative by Liveto-Ride and the Walvis Bay Rotary was applauded from several quarters.

No toll roads for Namibia Namibia is years away from having a toll road system implemented, which should be good news to road users, aware of how residents in a neighbouring state have expressed utter disapproval of such a system. In an interview with Nampa on Friday, Road Fund Administration (RFA) Chief Executive Officer, Ali Ipinge said there are no plans for tolling as a concept in Namibia and that the country is still years away from having a toll road system in terms of physical tolls on the roads, as there are no alternative roads to avoid tolling if the system was to be introduced. Ipinge was speaking to this news agency on the sidelines of the Namibia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI)'s National Council meeting, where it engaged Government on ways in which the two bodies can work together towards development. During the meeting, the RFA delivered a presentation on its operations, and questions arose on whether Namibia is looking at introducing toll roads, especially on roads such as the dual carriageway between Windhoek and Okahandja. Ipinge said what Namibia has adopted is road user charges, which in fact implement a shadow toll. This means road users contribute to the maintenance of the roads through the Road Fund, but do not stop to pay at toll gates. Ipinge further said studies have been done on tolling in the past, of which the results were not so conclusive and the results did not show that it would work.

Governor slams tribalism in politics The Erongo Region's Governor Cleophas Mutjavikua (pictured) has condemned tribalism among political party leadership. Mutjavikua was speaking at the swearing-in of councillors of the Erongo Regional Council on Friday. “Tribalism is contrary to Vision 2030, we therefore have no room for such behaviour. Namibia must move forward in unity.” The governor said politicians should avoid allowing tribalism and racism to influence their decisions. “In Erongo, our mission is not to divide our people, but unite them. We want to work and feed our people.” He encouraged white, black and coloured commu-

nities to live together in harmony. Seven constituency councillors of Erongo took office on Friday, with Walvis Bay Urban Constituency councillor Hafeni Ndemula being reelected as regional council chairperson. John Nangolo, Walvis Bay Rural councillor, was elected to represent the region in the National Council. Johannes Hamutenya, the new councillor for Omaruru Constituency, was also elected to represent

the region in the National Council (NC), alongside Nangolo. The third NC member is Melania Ndjago, the new councillor for Karibib. Juuso Kambueshe of Swakopmund Constituency and Benitha Imbamba for Arandis are members of the management committee. Six constituencies belongs to the Swapo party, while Joram Kennedy !Haoseb of the United Democratic Front (UDF) is the seventh coun-

cillor. He won the Daures constituency. He was sworn in as an ordinary council member. Ndemula thanked the electorate for the mandate and promised that more attention will be paid to rural development. He encouraged inclusiveness among fellow councillors and urged them to work hard for the people of Erongo. He encouraged young people to approach councillors' offices and the regional council to access available assistance. NAMPA

Walvis Bay Golf News T h a n k s t o Tr a v e l Magic for their ongoing sponsorship of the race to Cape Town, won in convincing style by Frans, the winner of winners was Justine, the Wednesday winner of winners was Kevin de Reuck and Colin Peake, on a 65 nett (and hopefully a new h'cap), won the winner of losers.

Kevin,Jens and Potch

Thanks to Quinten for the sponsorship on these three prizes. Hannes won the Angolink day, thanks Morne for your sponsorship. Good news is that Travel Magic, Angolink and Quinten have all agreed to sponsor again next year. A full report and photos to follow. The BANK WINDHOEK Corporate League continued and below is the standings after the games on Friday. JJ/Kevin still to play their game (Piscs/ Meridian), Marine Ropes and Old Boys, all three games still need to be played. Results of section 1: Nam Plastics beat team Quinton 2/1 and WBM beat Farts 3/0. Meridian are leading 2/0 against Piscs, and depending on the outcome of JJ/Kevin's game will determine the next 'men in pink', currently looks like Pieter Fox, Wayne and

Jaco. Jens and Potch looked stunning in their pink outfits and played well. Section 2: Forca beat Standard Bank 2/1, Old Mutual in pink (and looked good as well) beat team Boel 2/1. Marine Ropes still to play Old Boys, and this game could possibly determine the 'pink brigade', so give it horns guys. No OMSIC hole in one but Patrick was the closest. Don't forget the hole-in-one can only be won on the competition on Fridays. Section 3 will be played this Friday but some games could happen on Wednesday, please let Shane know. This coming weekend is the 'Flip/Hottie' sponsored day. It is a threeball alliance, prizes are a gemsbok, kudu, sheep, pig and three springbok, so get you teams sorted. These prizes are sponsored by Flip and Hottie who have also sponsored a super A grade ox, which will be cut into portions (forequarter, hindquarter etc), and auctioned off for club funds. Thanks to both of you guys. The duty roster shows Wi l l i e , b u t p l e a s e confirm. Next week is the Erongo sages sponsored by Old Mutual. Get you names

in at the club or contact Jerry. And, the surprise of the weekend was seeing John Gomes at the club on Friday. Great stuff John, and we look forward to your return. I have 50 bucks that says John plays again before Tiger. Any takers? Just a reminder about the Wispeco Coastal Juniors this coming Thursday and Friday. It's a two-day event with Thursday morning's 18 holes being played at Rossmund and Friday morning's 18 holes here at Walvis Bay, followed by prizegiving. Gert Olivier will kindly assist at both venues - especially to look after the development group. The format is as per the entry sheet. Please note that there are also divisions for the nonhandicapped, but willing able young-sters as well as a few development holes for the really young. Get those juniors' names in by this evening at Gert please. Only N$150 for two rounds of golf plus smacks and lots of prizes! Last but not least, Potch is off to L端deritz to get married. Go Potch go, and we wish you and Renate a great future together.

Table tennis tournament at the heart of the Dome

Sharlien Tjambari The Namibia Table Tennis Association (NTTA) is hosting the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 Championships from 9-12 December at the Swakopmund Dome. A total of 65 table tennis players from the Southern African Region will be competing at the Championship. Registration for this Championship started back in

April this year. According to Xenia Ivanoff-Erb, the Brand Manager of the Swakopmund Dome, this competition was previously referred to as the African Zone 6 Table Tennis Championship. The countries who have confirmed their presence at the Championship is Angola, Botswana, Malawi, Namibia, South Africa and Zambia, said Xenia. The countries will battle it out for the title of AUSC Region 5 Champions, “plans are underway to qualify this championship for African Table Tennis Federation rankings for the various countries and individuals players” Xenia added. There are 7 competitions that will run at the championships. The various countries will compete in the team event first on 9 and 10 December and will then battle it out in a women's doubles, men's doubles, and mixed doubles competitions says Xenia. The championship will be concluded with the men's and women's singles on 12 December 2015. “This will be a phenomenal battle to crown the best man and woman player in the Southern African Region” Xenia emphasised.

The competition is held every second year and Namibia is privileged to host the inaugural Region 5 Championship. A host of young talented ladies and men has been selected in the Namibian development teams that will also be competing in the championship. According to Xenia, the NTTA expresses its gratitude to all the companies who have made the hosting of this event possible, specifically the Swakop-mund Indoor Sports Centre, the Namibia National Olympic Committee and Bank Windhoek. “Also a special word of appreciation to the Embassy of the People's Republic of China for their continued support and commitment for table tennis within Namibia,” said Xenia. The Swakopmund and Walvis Bay community as well as all holidaymakers at the Coast are invited to come and support the Namibian Team and enjoy some great table tennis games.
