coming Botswana Defense Force Day celebrations. In a split second one of the jets peeled off formation and crashed in a fireball on the Gaborone golf course.

I suspected the worse, but nonetheless kept reassuring the kids the pilot is safe. Upon our return to Walvis Bay we saw on the news the pilot died in the crash.

Residents of a complex in 5th Road in Walvis Bay were alerted to the hysterical scream of a woman at around 19:30 on Saturday, only to learn to their horror it was actually a domestic dispute getting seriously out of hand after a man caught his wife redhanded cheating on him with another man.

“We just heard the screams and soon we realised there is big trouble and unless the police is called someone will get hurt or even killed”, said a nearby neighbour on condition of anonymity.

Namibians are victim to domestic violence daily. Every day we read in the media of boyfriends who seriously assault or even killing their girlfriends. It is important to know that despite the seriousness of the domestic violence dispute and even if a spouse cheats on the other, there is no reason to be come violent and abusive.

We have to remain committed to a non-violent society and the understanding that there are alternative ways for us to deal with our loss and disappointments”, a senior police officer said at the scene on Saturday evening.

With a natural flair for business and determination to make a success of her life, Lydia Shipateko has shown that graduates can triumph in challenging economic times.

Thirty-year-old Namibian entrepreneur, Shipateko, is businesswoman with a heart of steel. She is the sole owner of Otjomuise Accounting and Consulting and Velm Investments. Her companies currently employ eight people: five are on full-time and three on part-time basis.

They comprise five females and three males.

Otjomuise Accounting and Consulting offers services such as bookkeeping, company secretarial services, immigration, tax and financial advisory.

Velm Investments, named after her late father, specialises in business consultations, catering and cleaning services.

Shipateko shared why she chose these business ventures. “Jobs were scarce after I completed my tertiary education. I saw a need in this market and went for it. The goal was to create employment for myself and others,” she said.

Passion for business Shipeketo was born in Luanda, Angola. Her parents moved back to Namibia when she was a toddler.

Due to challenges experienced by her parents, Shipateko was

adopted by her aunt who raised her in Soweto, Windhoek.

“I see my aunt as my mother. She raised me into the woman that I am today,” she said.

Her keen sense for business was evident at an early age. She started a vetkoek selling business when she was at Augeikhas Primary School. In Secondary School, Shipateko managed the school's minishop.

After she matriculated at Hage Geingob Secondary School in 2009, Shipateko went on to study Accounting and Finance at a local tertiary institution. With the financial assistance from her life-partner, she managed to save enough start-up capital. Upon graduating in 2012, she immediately registered her companies and went into business.

“The beginning was the hardest part. I had to prove myself to the market,” she said.

In 2016 Shipateko sought financial assistance from Bank Windhoek's Emerging Small and Medium Enterprises (ESME) Finance Branch to purchase a company vehicle. Her application was approved within a week.

ESME Finance Branch was established to offer support and assistance to promising Namibian entrepreneurs with feasible business ideas.

“ESME Finance Branch also focuses on empowering women and young entrepreneurs. What was evident with Shipateko is her business acumen and financial discipline. Her track record in this area made it much easier for us to assist her,” said Bank Windhoek's ESME Finance Branch, Credit and Sales Manager, Aune Hamukonda.

Challenges faced Challenges that many entrepreneurs have to deal with such as lack of capital and collateral, were just some of the trials Shipateko faced. She does add, however, that this made her stronger and that business is good.

“Despite the current depressed economic activity affecting the volume of projects secured, we have maintained positive financial growth,” she said.

Shipateko advised young aspiring entrepreneurs to develop a savings culture.

“They must reinvest their funds back into the business for sustainability and avoid spending money on expensive luxuries,” she said.

Four arrested for dealing in Cannabis over the long weekend Eileen van der Schyff

Mondesa -Three men and one woman were arrested for dealing in Cannabis over the long weekend.

Mike Kalumba (26), was arrested on Saturday, 5 May at about 14:52, for dealing in eight bankies of Cannabis valued at N$4 000-00. Silvanus Amgabeb (32), was arrested for dealing in two big bankies and eight small bankies, valued at N$1 500-00.

A Nigerian man, Mwze Kingsley Eze (41), and his Namibian girlfriend, Nghitanua Azelika (32), were arrested on Saturday, 5 May at around 15:00 for dealing in four loaves or blocks of cannabis, as well as a transparent plastic bankie of cannabis, all valued at N$9 100-00.

They all appeared in the Swakopmund magistrates court yesterday.

Accident claims one life - four injured Eileen van der Schyff

The driver of a white Mazda double-cab bakkie passed away at the scene of an accident near Usakos. Four passengers were injured.

It is alleged that on Friday, 3 May, the driver of the Mazda double-cab bakkie, with registration N26396W, the sixty-eightyear-old Otniel Kamenye, lost control of the vehicle and it overturned. Kamenye was killed in the accident which took place on the D1935 gravel road from Usakos to Tubusis.

The four passengers of the vehicle were: Irene Hei-Gauses (42), Emily Kamenye (70), who sustained serious injuries and was admitted at the Usakos state hospital, Martha Haubas (50), and Gillian Hei-Gauseb (8) sustained minor injuries.

The next of kin of the deceased person has been informed.

A knitted beanie to ward off the cold this winter Floris Steenkamp Winter is fast approaching and any effort at keeping our children warm is much welcomed. Thanks to the Walvis Bay chapter of the Namibia Women Agriculture Society (NWAS), children at Promiseland Play Centre received knitted beanies to keep the cold at bay.

Members of the Society recently visited Promiseland Centre in Kuisebmond where they had the opportunity to meet the staff and children and also had the opportunity to see what Promiseland is doing on the ground for children, who are measured among the most vulnerable people in Namibian society along with the elderly and the disabled.

Promiseland Centre is part of the mandate of the Promiseland Trust which serves the interest of vulnerable children through various permanent projects.

Apart from the Play Centre, the Trust also runs a feeding program through which some 2 500 children benefit daily, every school day. The Trust also facilitates foster care for orphans or children who for va-

rious possible reasons have to be removed from their parental homes.

The NWAS is better known as the “Namibiese Vroue Landbouvereniging (VLV)” and is organised into Chapters countrywide.

At the coast NWAS is organised into the Walvis Bay, Swakopmund and Henties Bay Chapters. Members meet regularly and assist among each other skills like knitting, sewing, baking, handicraft and

to keep ahead with changing trends and challenges in our society which affects Namibian women at all levels.

Charity projects, such as the beanie knitting project is great fun. The Walvis Bay women knitted a total of 80 beanies and said afterwards it was greatly rewarding to hand over the knitted wear and to know that it would make some difference in the quality of lives of these children this winter.

Passenger dies on Queen Elizabeth cruise liner - two more injured

Life as a crew member aboard a cruise ship is not always about ensuring passengers are having the best time of their lives.

There are sombre moments too. Two passengers aboard the luxury cruise liner Queen Elizabeth had to disembark for medical treatment in Walvis Bay last week when the ship was alongside. A third passenger, believed to be an elderly person, died at sea aboard the luxury cruise liner of natural causes. Cruise ships have medical facilities aboard and trained staff to deal with medical emergencies and also has onboard mortuaries in the events of deaths at sea. The deceased persons’ mortal remains were transported to Windhoek for a cremation later this month after relatives, who are traveling from overseas to Namibia, had the opportunity to view the body and say a last farewell.

Investing in existing port infrastructure more efficient than building new ports Melba Kaure

The Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) in its Economic Watch for April ranks the port of Walvis Bay the sixth best performing port in Africa. The port of Lüderitz is ranked eleventh on the continent.

The IPPR's research associate, Klaus Schade analysed a report of Price Waterhouse Coopers (PwC) to reach the conclusion which was based on performance by the two ports.

In terms of “Attractiveness of African ports”, the port of is in the lead Durban, followed

by Abidjan, Ivory Coast and Mombasa, Kenya.

In this category the port of Walvis Bay is ranked 17th and Lüderitz in place number 36.

The port of Rotterdam is the leading port in Europe, according to Schade in his research document.

The report further suggests three major port hubs will develop in Africa. These are Durban (for Southern Africa), Mombasa (for East Africa) and most likely Abidjan (for West Africa). Other ports will play smaller roles in these regions.

Furthermore, the research document suggests investing in existing port facilities will deliver better results than developing new ports as alternatives.

Schade is of opinion research findings like these could provide valuable guidance for Namibia in further developing its port infrastructure.

“Investing in existing port infrastructure results in better returns than developing alternative ports as examples as nearby as South Africa show,” he stated.

The expansion of the port of Walvis Bay and the construction of the new Walvis Bay North port (SADC Gateway Port) reflect this finding. Walvis Bay already benefits from existing service providers and infrastructure that links it to a relevant hinterland.

Furthermore, Walvis Bay is likely to play a role as a major regional port rather than a hub, which would suggest strengthening ties with the emerging port hubs in Africa.

The findings also suggests that entering into partnerships with private port operators could result in efficiency gains and increase attractiveness, since independent operators are part of existing networks and could attract more traffic volumes.

Sedick Brenner autopsy reveals drowning as cause of death As the community of Walvis Bay struggle to come to terms with the death of Moegamat Sedick Brenner (20), it was confirmed now that an autopsy shows drowning as the cause of death. Brenner's body was discovered on the beach at Langstrand on Wednesday morning.

The late Brenner was last seen alive on Tuesday night at his residence in Long Beach. He was in the company of friends. Relatives and friends who attended Brenner's funeral on Friday afternoon were still in shock at his untimely death.

Brenner was buried with full Muslim rites.

Detectives of the Namibian Police at Walvis Bay followed up several leads since Wednesday morning. An inquest docket has been opened, which will soon be presented to a local magistrate.

A legal expert explained to namib times today the Police will be presenting evidence in this docket. Although Brenner's death is attributed to drowning, the possibility still exists the magistrate will rule that a further investigation be carried out to determine the exact circumstances under which this young man drowned. Also, whether people could be held accountable for his death.

Meanwhile, namib times spoke to the bereaved Brenner family, who confirmed a reward of N$50 000 is offered to any person who can provide credible evidence for a further criminal investigation into the late Moegamat Sedick Brenner's death.

The family requested the following two cell phone numbers be used to provide information. They added any information will be highly appreciated and valued.

It will also be treated as confidential, but will be handed over to the criminal investigator at the Walvis Bay Police currently dealing with the case.

June is cancer awareness month for men Melba Kaure The Cancer Association of Namibia's (CAN) Erongo Centre has stepped up its efforts to raise cancer awareness, specifically with men's health in mind.

According to CAN's CEO Rolf Hansen many men don't make their health a priority. Especially when it comes to cancer.

“Wellness is put on the backburner in favour of work or other obligations. In Namibia we have experienced a rapid increase in male health conditions that include hypertension, diabetes, heart conditions and prostate cancer. Male HIV-infection rates remain on the increase and we have also noted serious increases in cancer diagnosis among Namibian men.”

“Depression and mental health in men are often seen as taboo topics. Only when we address men's health more proactively, we break stigmas and start an open dialogue where men feel comfortable to talk; and not vulnerable to be made out as weaklings”, explained Hansen in a press statement.

In honour of International Men's Health Month (June) CAN will host two fun days where families get together and where information on cancer will be made available.

The Inter Africa Cup Regional Shooting Competition of Nations

April 2018 NHRSA held their third shooting competition, including the qualifying shoots for the National teams over the weekend of the 21st of April at the Heja Game Lodge with record entries of 125 for Saturday.

The qualification shoot already kicked off on Friday, 20th of April with the top thirty and top ten ladies competing for a position in the National Team. After a long, but safe trip, the Namibian Archery Team as well as the Development Team arrived in Springs for the All Africa All Stars Championship and Development Challenge to take place on 27 and 28 April 2018. 128 archers from South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Namibia competed.

Arrows flew for two days to determine the top Male and Female archers and the top teams.

On Friday, all archers shot 3 Bulls Eye rounds to get a ranking score.

With these scores each team was divided into top 8 and bottom 8. The top 8 of each country then started the elimination process on Bulls Eye targets, while the bottom 8 started shooting at the 3D animals. At the Gala dinner on Saturday evening, the prize giving commenced. The Namibian Development Team received a silver medal in the 3D competition, beating South Africa and Botswana. The bronze went to Namibia, after Zimbabwe and South Africa and ahead of Botswana for the Bulls Eye competition. The Development Team received an Overall bronze.

Gerhard Koen from Keetmanshoop, won the individual Gold for the Bulls Eye, 3D and Overall Competitions. He also received the cup for the Development Team Champion.

The Namibian Team received a bronze medal, beating Botswana in the Bulls Eye competition. Winner and Runner-up were South Africa and Zimbabwe.

They were third for the 3D competition as well as Overall. Dominique Bekker, from Walvis Bay, received the individual silver medal for

3D All Stars competition. South Africa won the overall gold while Zimbabwe received the silver.

It is the 10 year anniversary of NASP in South Africa. The NASP Africa Federation was founded last year and the first ever All African All Stars team was announced with 8 archers from South Africa, 5 from Zimbabwe and Pieter Hough, Diwan Engel-brecht and Delron Gaoseb from Namibia.

Well done to our archers. It was an eventful trip for our archers who visited Carnival City for bowling and for one archer it was meeting his dad who resides in South Africa for the first time.

In July, the Namibian Team will be flying to Canada to compete at the All Nations All Stars, where each country sends their top 16 archers. SFS Vikings beat Dolphins to go top of standings On 28 April the SFC Vikings beat Dolphins by 22-16 to end their unbeaten run and top the log standings at the SFC in Swakopmund.

Once again the match between the two sides met expectations with good quality rugby. Dolphins fly-half Donovan O'Brien, opened the score board with a penalty which gave them a 3-0 lead in the first ten minutes. Moments later the SFC Vikings struck back with a try through fly-half Kyle Wentzel to make the score 5-3 for the home side.

Another O'Brien penalty saw the visitors take the lead by 6-5.

In a game that saw the two sides show excellent attacking form, it was SFC Vikings that struck again from a driving maul when loose-head prop Andre Strydom crossed the line for a try, converted by Wentzel to turn the score board to 12-6 in favour of the home side, going into halftime.

In the second half Dolphins patiently launched an attacking onslaught which finally broke the Viking's defensive line when they scored through flyhalf Donovan O'Brien, to make the score 12-11.

The SFC Vikings however, dominated the set-pieces which resulted in a try for lock Ettiene Noeth to keep the score board in favour of the home side with 17-11.

A perfectly executed strike move by the Dolphin backline saw outside center Jayden Bussel cross the chalk for a five pointer to stay in reach of the Vikings making the score 17-16.

The SFC Vikings struck back when a box kick launched by Dolphins went horribly wrong and flanker Clayton Camm grabbed the ball out of the air to cross for Viking's fourth try to secure a bonus point and seal a victory of 22-16.

"As it should be in a tough conference, this was a nerve wrecking match once again. Both sides produced quality rugby that delivered to expectations. The result could've gone to either side in the end. As we said with the first encounter, rugby in Swakopmund is in good space at the moment, especially between the two teams. Its rivalry on the field and brother hood off the field. We would like to thank Dolphins for a great match where sportsmanship and rugby once again triumphed above anything else" said the Vikings coaching staff.

Both SFC Vikings and Dolphins booked their place in the 1st Division quarter finals by sealing up the western conference with a league match each in hand. Vikings sits at the top on 22 points, Dolphins on 21 points followed by Walvis Bay Rugby Club on 12 points and Erongo Rugby Academy on 1 point. Dolphins will play against Walvis Bay Rugby Club on 12/05/18 at the Dolphin Tank in Vineta, while SFC Vikings will travel to Narraville on 19/05/18 to take on Erongo Rugby Academy. Both games will kick off at 15:00
