Bigger police force brings Met Walvisbaai less success against crime se burgemeester Erwin Leuschner
Namibia has increased its police force since independence from 800 to 17 000 to date – but even though these figures are impressive, has the Ministry of Safety and Security achieved what it set out to do? This imperative question was asked by Major General (Rtd) Charles Namoloh, Minister of Safety and Security, during his official opening address of the ministerial strategic planning in Swakopmund on Friday. Apparently the Ministry of Safety and Security is not giving back much to Government and the Namibians. This is the opinion of Namoloh who on Friday during his address to various highranking officials in Swakopmund shared this view. “Not much (has been achieved), if one has to go by the huge number of uncleared cases. Not much, if one looks at the attitude of Police Officers and Correctional Officers serving the public. Not much, if one has to go by the number of sms's about Police and the Ministry that appear in the newspapers almost on a daily basis,” Namoloh said. The Minister even went so far saying that “we live in fear in our own houses, we are not safe to move around after dark, we cannot even stop next to the road anymore.” Various police officers and high ranking officials

from the Ministry came together during the course of last week where they discussed and brought up ideas to develop a strategic plan for the Ministry for the next five years. It was the first time in the history of the Ministry that such a get-together took place. “It is imperative that we determine where we are now, what is important for us as a Ministry, define what we must achieve and who will be accountable for the strategies, action plans and resources going into achieving what we set out to achieve,” Namoloh said. According to Namoloh the Namibian police force currently stands at about 17 000, compared to 800 at Independence – this is an increase of more than 2000 percent. “This means our police officer versus citizen ratio is 1:114, while that of the UN Continues on page 2
