Winter storm hits central coast - no damages

The winter storm that played havoc in many parts of the Western Cape this week hit the Namibian coast yesterday. By mid-day yesterday the rough seas had peaked, but contrary to initial expectations no damages were reported. Many Swakopmund residents waited patiently at some developed areas which usually take a pounding during stormy seas, including the Tiger Reef Beach Bar, the Jetty and the new Platz am Meer Waterfront – but nothing major transpired. Many had predicted a swell of over five meters and warned residents to be careful.

The Ministry of Finance’s Department of Inland Revenue in Erongo is hosting a series of taxpayer education days across the region on 15 June, as part of its mission to promoting tax compliance among Namibians and to enhance taxpayers’ knowledge of the different taxes administered by the Receiver of Revenue.

Similar taxpayers education days have been hosted in the past with highly successful results.

“During this time officials from the Inland Revenue Department will be available in mobile teams to assist the general public on all inquiries relating to tax. Therefore, taxpayers are encouraged to bring their tax forms and employees’ tax certificates to be guided on how to do a self-assessment,” the Department of Inland Revenue said in an official letter.

Donations streaming in to assist shack fire victims

Local businessman, Paulus Ndume of Ndume Trading Enterprises CC, recently donated N$50 000 toward the Mayoral Relief Fund in aid of assisting members of the community who have lost their homes and property at the hands of shack fires.

During the donation ceremony, Mayor Immanuel Wilfred highlighted his growing concern about shack fires after recently looking at statistics of the past 16 months which has seen 103 shacks destroyed by fire and more than 200 people homeless. A total number of 43 shacks burned down between January and May of this year. Wilfred added that the only way to put an end to the disastrous effects of shack fires is to ultimately make adequate housing available to the near 50 000 people living in backyard shacks in Kuisebmond.

At the same ceremony, Round Table 36 donated an additional 130 blankets and 13 bags of clothing which was received from community members during the annual Winter Knights campaign as well as donations made by Namsov Fishing Enterprises and Fishmar to assist shack fire victims.

The organisation also made a donation of 20 blankets and 3 mattresses to Kids Haven. Wilfred thanked Build It and EBH Namibia for donating building material to the value of N$10 000, as well as Nedbank for announcing their intention to also contribute towards easing the plight of the recent fire victims.

“Justice for Rossmund” is a group of residents which organised themselves into a pressure group against the concept of a golf estate. Their main reason is the fact that a non-existent Section 21 company registration number was used more than a decade ago to register notarial deeds of imposition against properties sold at Rossmund. The pressure group claims that the non-existent Section 21 company registration number mislead people to believe they bought into a golf estate.

Criminal charges of fraud and theft under false pretense were laid against coastal lawyers Gerhard van der Merwe and Danie Malherbe and developer Wim van der Plas at the Namibian Police over the matter. The matter is currently under investigation and a third coastal lawyer might be added to the list of suspects in the case.

The pressure group also bemoans the absence of the Namibian Police on regular patrols at Rossmund as well as the absence of traffic officers patrolling the streets to enforce traffic laws.

DRC residents not happy with Council feedback on development Sharlien Tjambari

The Swakopmund Town Council organised a series of public meetings this week to inform the residents on the strategic plan and some of the projects Council has embarked upon. The public meeting on Tuesday focused on residents of the DRC informal settlement.

According to the Mayor of Swakopmund, Clr Pauline Nashilundo, the meetings are conducted annually and provide residents the opportunity to interact with Council on issues of mutual concern.

Council in turn informs the public of various activities which are in line with the principles of participatory democracy and outreach programs. These require the public to take part in decision making within their locality.

The public is encouraged to attend monthly Council meetings too, which are held every last Thursday of the month at the municipal council chambers.

Residents can familiarise themselves with the day-to-day operations and decisions made by Council.

During the briefing in DRC the acting Chief Executive Officer Mr Marco Swarts shared which projects Council has undertaken and which projects are envisaged as per the budgetary provisions and strategic plan approved

by Council with the residents of the DRC informal settlement.

According to Swarts

the formalisation of the DRC is in full swing and the servicing of land is ongoing. Council is committed to upgrade DRC informal settlement through the provision of electricity, water and sanitation.

However, there have been various challenges: the land to be serviced is occupied by informal structures and Council is appealing to the community of DRC to cooperate with service providers and give way if need be for the officials to make the project a success.

According to Swarts only 85% of the installation of civil and electrical services in Extension 28 of DRC 2 has been completed. The only outstanding area is located north of DRC 2, which is populated. The ground is also very hard (hard rock) which is challenging for the installation of services.

Council also informed about developments in other suburbs including the Mile 4 Area, Matutura Extensions, and Tamariskia. During the meeting the DRC residents questioned the developments in other areas as they have nothing to do with them. One

man in his late 40's asked Council: “You are talking about development in mile 4, Tamariskia or town, what does that have to do with the residents of DRC? Those developments have nothing to do with us.”

The attendee continued saying that the multipurpose centre currently under construction in Mondesa will not benefit the children of DRC because it is very far from DRC. “When will our children, those who sleep in shacks, will go and make use of these facilities while they burn to death in shack fires?” Responding to these questions, Swarts said: “There was nothing when the new Council took over. Children from Mondesa or DRC could not go to town because of the long distance but now there will be something for the children, where they can go and use library services, which will be provided at this facility.

As time goes by and if there are funds available Council will continue developing Mondesa and DRC bringing development closer and closer to the community.

As usual many other attendees, most are residents of DRC, voiced their concerns over housing issues. One lady, who has been living in DRC since 1992, said that she has applied for housing many times, even for the Build Together Scheme, but has never been successful.

According to her, her name never featured amongst the successful candidates. Now she is old and still lives in DRC. “It is very heart breaking to see people from other towns coming to Swakopmund and getting houses but the old residents of Swakopmund always apply but never get houses. I know I can afford a house or build one but how can I do that if my applications are never approved?” the

lady asked.

During the meeting namib times learned that many residents of DRC are afraid of making way for the installation of civil and electrical services because they are unsure if they would be able to return to their respective erven should they agree to move.

Additionally Council has not yet allocated an

area where the residents can move to while development is taking place.

Swarts also informed the residents of other continuous projects by Council, including surfacing of roads; the Mondesa-rail crossing/B2 circle; the Multipurpose centre; the cleansing of mobile and refuse bins, restrooms and garages; the sewe-

rage works and redirection of the sewer pump station; new sand trap and grit removal system; and development of an SME Park on Erf 4864; as well as water works, including the replacement of water meters and pipes; meter readings/water loss reduction and a new water reservoir for the small holdings.

The Namibian truck driver, Lisias Amukushu (54), who sustained serious burn injuries all over his body when three trucks burnt at Usakos on Friday (2 June), passed away on Tuesday this week.

This was revealed by deputy commissioner Erastus Iikuyu, police regional crime investigations coordinator for Erongo.

According to Iikuyu Amukushu succumbed to his injuries at about 17:30 at the Katutura State Hospital in Windhoek. His next of kin were informed.

The police is still investigating the cause of the inferno. Two fridge trucks, both carrying a Zambian registration, as well as a tanker truck, which was transporting 44 680 liters of unleaded petrol, burnt out completely. The three trucks were parked next to each other opposite the Shell Service Station in Usakos – the fire destroyed all trucks completely.

During the incident Amukushu was seriously injured while another driver, Luka Kabue, a Zambian National, escaped unharmed. The third driver, also suspected to be a Zambian national, has disappeared since. “We have not found him yet,” Iikyu said. He added that the Namibian police has traced the Zambian company this particular driver was allegedly working for. “Because it is a cross-border issue we are in close contact with Interpol,” he said.

A truck hauling frozen fish and a train collided in the port of Walvis Bay on Wednesday, prompting a safety incident investigation by the Namibia Ports Authority (Namport). Significant damage was caused to the truck.

David wins against Goliath Erwin Leuschner

A Swakopmund resident has won a second legal victory against mobile telephone giant MTC in the Supreme Court on Thursday last week. After a legal battle of close to six years the Supreme Court ruled in favour of a High Court judgement stating the telecommunication company ended a rental agreement not only abruptly, but also in contravention of its own terms.

The case has set a new precedent for the Law in Namibia. Siegfried Eckleben initially struggled to find a law firm willing to take on

the case. “I was told by various lawyers that a single person would never stand a chance against a big corporation.

Now I won twice”, Eckleben explained to namib times.

The High Court ruled in favour of Eckleben in March last year and ordered that the company pay an amount of N$326,644.73 to Eckleben for abruptly ending a lease agreement with him.

Reason being that he found that an installed cell phone repeater installation on a small tower at his house emitted radiation in excess of 20 times the maximum allowable amount set by the International Commission for Non Ionising Radiation Protection (ICNIRP). It constituted a serious health risk to human beings.

The case originated from April 2010, when Eckleben bought a smallholding on the outskirts of Swakopmund on public auction. The smallholding belonged to the late Thilo Neumann who was murdered at his smallholding in an armed robbery at the beginning of the same year.

Neumann had a rental agreement with MTC, which Eckleben took over as a condition of the sale.

As the house was situated on top of a small hill, MTC had set up a cell phone repeater installation on a small tower at the house, which the mobile telephone giant leased for N$3 000 a month for a period of ten years.

After Eckleben bought the property, he noticed that the antennae were in very close proximity to where people would walk past and that there was reasonable concern about the level of radiation. He acquired a device to test the radiation and found it was in excess of 20 times the maximum allowable amount set by the ICNIRP. He then contacted MTC about this and suggested they raise the antennae or build an artificial palm tree but the mobile giant in-stead

abruptly gave written notice to termi-nate the lease agreement in January 2011 and removed the antenna installation shortly afterwards.

The rental contract only lapsed in July 2016.

“It was very suspicious that they (MTC) terminated the lease agreement only after I tested the radiation level,” Eckleben explained at the time. He approached the Court and claimed damages for the breach of contract.

Judge Shafimana Ueitele ruled in Eckleben's favour in March 2016.

MTC lodged an appeal in the Supreme Court and Eckleben. Last week judge Sylvester Mainga, supported by deputy chief justice Petrus Damaseb and judge of appeal Elton Hoff, said the High Court's judgment stands.

Eckleben was represented by Esi ShimmingChase and Andreas Vaatz. MTC was represented by Phillip Barnard, instructed by Lorenz Angula Inc.

The man was a resident at the home where the burglary occurred and he died of the gunshot injury on Thursday. The deceased, Mr. Nghipulwa Matheus Kahwadi, celebrated his 29th birthday ten days before the incident. According to deputy commissioner Erastus Iikuyu, police regional crime investigations co-ordinator for Erongo, the incident took place early in the morning hours on the above-mentioned date. “It is alleged that at about 03:00 at house no. 1959 one suspect entered the flat through an open window and stole one laptop, a Samsung Note 4 cellphone and a Samsung Duos cellphone whilst the victim and his girlfriend were sleeping,” Iikuyu said. New Mondesa Police Station Commander introduced to community The Namibian Police (NamPol) organised a church parade on Sunday (4 June) to introduce the new station commander of the Mondesa Police Station to the community of Swakopmund: Warrant Officer Hilma Kandali Uugwanga.

Many serious crimes take place in the Swakopmund suburb Mondesa, most notable are assault-related offences, murders at month's end fuelled by alcohol as well as a rising trend in housebreaking cases. This was some of the concerns brought forward by the community and was acknowledged as focus areas for crime prevention when the new station commander was introduced. During the meeting Nampol also gave information of the status of crime in Mondesa and preventative measures to reduce identified crime.

According to the Head of Community Police for Erongo region, Warrant Officer Iileni Shapumba, the types of crimes committed in Mondesa remain a huge challenge. “It is because of this that the station commander has introduced search operations at night. Up to date we have confiscated 30 knives, including a panga, between 30 May and 2 June (picture below),” Shapumba said. He urged the community not to walk alone at night and rather stay at home and called on the community to establish neighbourhood watches.

Erongo Desalination Plant celebrates seven years of no Lost Time Injuries The Erongo Desalination Plant celebrated an incredible milestone of seven years with no Lost Time Injury (LTI). The celebration took place at the facility located near Wlotzkasbaken on Friday, 2 June. The plant was built to supply water to the Trekkopje Mine of AREVA Resources Namibia.“This is our longest time period of any of our current operations without Lost Time Injuries. At one of our other operations we were one month short of eight years when we suffered a Lost Time Injury at one of the cold plants. That's how quickly it can happen,” said Roy Malcolm, AVENG's General Manager-Operations, addressing the staff members during the celebration. He added the workers should therefore never be complacent and never ever think it's not going to happen to them.

Many questions and little answers: The police in the Erongo region is still searching for a truck driver, suspected to be a Zambian national, who disappeared on Friday evening after three trucks burned out completely in Usakos. One Namibian truck driver, Lisias Amukushu, sustained severe burn injuries and is still in a critical condition while a third truck driver escaped unharmed.

The cause of the blaze, which started at about 19:45 on Friday evening, is still unknown. “We are investigating the fire incident but we are not ruling out arson,” said deputy commissioner Erastus Iikuyu, police regional crime investigations coordinator for Erongo, to namib times. According to Iikyu the first truck to stop at the open area opposite the Shell Service Station was a refrigerator truck with a Zambian registration (BCA 4011). The truck was apparently parked at the spot of the incident for about a week after it had broken down. During the afternoon on Friday a tanker truck, belonging to Grindrod Fuel Logistics Company, transporting 44 680 liters unleaded petrol parked next to the first truck.

Container terminal project only completed by 2019 At a public session presented by PS HSE Consulting to keep interested parties and the community updated on the progress of construction of Namports' new container terminal on reclaimed land, it was confirmed that the construction of the 40 hectares container terminal is around 60% completed.

The project, which was scheduled for completion by mid-2018, has been delayed due to unforeseen geotechnical conditions below the seabed. As a result of the problem the terminal would now only be commissioned by 2019. Six months were spent doing additional geotechnical investigations and research on a diatomaceous silt layer, a layer of dead organic matter, approximately 20 metres below the seabed. The type of diatomaceous silt found at Walvis Bay is particularly uncommon worldwide, and research into the engineering properties of this type of silt is limited.

Technology rewrites Africa’s energy future Energy disruption to see Africa drive its own growth narrative JOHANNESBURG, 6 June 2017: New disruptive technologies are changing the way that energy generation and distribution is understood and funded in Africa.

These changes have profound implications, far beyond the energy sector. African policy makers, governments, banks, investors and global funders need to take stock of these changes and re-look at how energy is conceived and managed on the continent.

“The good news is that technology-driven change is likely to see Africans play a far larger role in building, shaping and benefitting from energy on the continent,” says Rentia van Tonder, Head, Power at Standard Bank.

New technologies are set to expand access to energy beyond Africa's urban centres. This holds the potential to include Africa's extensive rural population in meaningful economic participation, sustaining the African growth narrative for generations to come.

Small, easy-to-install, home solar, for instance, is making energy affordable to rural populations, and challenging banks to come up with less costly – and digitally delivered – funding solutions, “geared to individuals seeking access to energy – and the economic opportunities that this brings,” says Ms van Tonder.

When new storage technologies, currently attracting heavy early-phase funding from US investors, is added to the mix, individuals will also be able to store – and potentially even sell – their own energy.

Since the bulk of Africa's rural population has, historically, been excluded from Africa's limited and urbanfocused grids, home technologies delivering and storing affordable and privately owned off-grid solutions, also have the potential to take energy generation and supply off government balance sheets.

This will mean that the days of building vast generation and distribution networks are likely not to dominate as in the past. Instead, “the future will see smaller, localised, and even privately-owned off-grid generation, storage, distribution and sale of energy,” says Ms van Tonder.

This will involve a far wider mix of technologies and suppliers - and a far wider range of funding and payment mechanisms.

Making renewables part of a diversified energy mix also provides utilities a way of continuing to attract funding – by using new technologies to sustainably diversify their generation and supply networks, including off-grid and end-user funding elements.

Other opportunities for African utilities include regional integration of generation and distribution. “Selling and supplying energy cross-border to multiple markets significantly reduces the risk and cost of funding utility debt on the continent,” adds Ms van Tonder.

If regional integration is blended with renewables and off grid, banks stand a much better chance of being able to help utilities better manage long term sustainability given the flexibility.

As such, this disruption comes at exactly the right time in

Africa.

In today's less predictable global environment the funding of large long-term energy projects is seen as risky. In Africa too, perceived risk is a growing challenge, particularly when it comes to funding existing energy utilities and traditional large power generation and distribution projects - especially those based on coal and also hydro. “As global investment mandates increasingly include sustainability criteria, traditional sources of African energy, like coal, may struggle to find funding,” explains Ms van Tonder.

Smaller, renewable, off grid solutions, supported by new storage capabilities offer sustainable alternatives that pose less risk and have shorter and cheaper construction and delivery periods. They can also be, “funded in local currency through affordable end-user payment structures – rather than via hard currency-based long term debt,” says Ms van Tonder.

All this reduces risk.

In response to these rapid technology-driven changes, both African energy policy as well as the way bank's structure – and fund – energy projects is likely to undergo significant change.

For now, development finance institutions (DFIs) have taken the lead in funding smaller, more innovative, off grid renewable - and largely community-based - projects.

Augmenting these new technologies with supportive government policy and innovative banking and funding solutions holds the potential to expand and sustain growth in Africa. “This will allow Africa to truly begin setting and driving its own development agenda – and growth story,” adds Ms van Tonder.

Standard Bank is working quickly across its 20 African markets to understand the full implications – and potential – of these developments for African growth.

Certainly in East Africa, flexible and sustainable off grid renewable energy solutions are already having a measurable impact on rural communities. With home solar increasingly affordable to many households, East Africa's hitherto economically excluded rural populations now have the potential to access energy affordably.

To date much of the African growth narrative has revolved around population migration into urban centres. As young and newly urban populations' access energy, finance and consumer goods in Africa's rapidly expanding metropoles new opportunities, markets and industries develop. If the growth that this trend has driven could be replicated amongst Africa's vast rural population – through the provision of affordable energy off grid, Africa's growth potential gets significantly bigger and much more

sustainable.

This also means that the continent's growth narrative becomes a lot more locally, rather than globally, driven,” adds Ms van Tonder. In achie-ving this, the key question to answer is, “how does Standard Bank – as an African Bank - become more relevant in funding the small, the local and the private?” says Ms van Tonder.

The good thing about all this change is that the generation and distribution of energy in Africa will become less costly. Also, if supported by the right government policy, energy generation and distribution costs can be removed from government budgets. This will free up national budgets for the provision of essential services.

While Africa's energy landscape is being severely disrupted by new technologies, this disruption, if managed correctly, presents exciting opportunities for Africa's economies and people.

An der Atlantikküste,in der Namibwüste Lichtblick für einsame Farmer Paul Hermann Wlotzka

Diese Schtorie von Ingrid Kubisch wird in zwei Folgen auf diesen Seiten erscheinen.

Ingrid Kubisch, bekannte namibische Autorin, lebt auf der Farm Okapaue-Ost in der Omaheke. Sie schreibt meistens Kurzgeschichten, von denen viele in Namibia und Deutschland publiziert wurden, mehrere davon preisgekrönt. Sie ist Mitglied der Autorengruppe “doppelpunkt” und ehemaliges Redaktionsmitglied der Literaturzeitschrift Felsgraffiti. Ingrid Kubisch ist Anbieterin der beliebten Junga u t o re n S c h re i b werkstatt des Deutschen Kulturrats. Sie lebt und schreibt nach der Devise von K u r t Tu c h o l s k y : „Humor ist der Knopf, der verhindert, dass uns der Kragen platzt“.

Folge 1 Endlich passiert was.

Der Einsamkeit des Junggesellen auf der Farm soll ein Ende bereitet werden. Die Fernsehshow „Bauer sucht Frau“ kommt nach Namibia. Unter dem Banner „Farmer sucht Frau“ sind deutschsprachige Farmer eingeladen, sich schriftlich und mit Foto bei RTL zu melden und, wenn sie Glück haben, kommen junge Frauen, die ganz versessen darauf sind, sich einen Farmer zu ergattern, mit ihrer Betreuerin auf die Farm.

Dem hoffnungsfreudigen Farmer werden zwei Anwärterinnen vorgestellt, von denen er sich erst mal eine aussucht, und dann schauen die beiden, ob sie sich nach einer gemeinsam verbrachten Woche auf der Farm kennen und lieben gelernt haben.

Wenn ja, ist Farmer mit Frau glücklich, wenn nein – dann die Nächste! Vielleicht. Und alles, alles wird gefilmt – von der Pein bis zur Qual. „Verliebt, gefilmt, verheiratet“ lautet der Slogan.

Frauenmangel bei Farmern ist nichts Neues.

Schon damals in der alten Kolonie herrschte akuter Frauenmangel.

Was sich in Südwest abspielte, war in den Zeiten vor über 100 Jahren sehr bedenklich. Weit über die

Hälfte der Siedler lebte in „Konkubinatsverhältnissen“ mit Frauen der kolonisierten Bevölkerung. Blondlockige, blauäugige Kinder waren immer seltener zu sehen, während braunhäutige, krausköpfige Mischlingssprösslinge überall herum wuselten.

Zudem sprach diese Nachkommenschaft ein grausliches Mischmasch aus Deutsch, Herero und Afrikaans.

Es war nicht mehr zu übersehen, dass die deutschen Männer auf den Farmen und Siedlungen in Südwest am Verkommen und Verrohen waren. Dieses Faktum veranlasste Gouverneur Leutwein, zur Feder zu greifen, um einen Brandbrief an die oberste Kolonialverwaltung zu schreiben und auf die Verschiffung deutscher Frauen zu drängen.

Das Wohl und Heil der Kolonie stand auf dem Spiel und bedurfte des energischen Einsatzes der Mitgliederinnen des Kolonialen Frau-

enbundes, die um so wichtiger und gebieterischer auftraten, je bedeutender die Amtsbezeichnungen ihrer Gatten waren. Gegen eine energische Frau ist kein Kraut gewachsen, und sind es derer gar mehrere, zudem beseelt von missionarischem Eifer, so kann mit Fug und Recht erklärt werden, dass das Schicksal vieler Junggesellen auf den Farmen besiegelt war.

Der Angriff erfolgte von mehreren Flanken. Zum einen wurden Kolonialfrauenschulen im deutschen Reich ins Leben gerufen. „...nicht im freien burschikosen Wesen soll sich die Tatkraft der Absolventin einer Kolonialfrauenschule äußern, sondern in echter Weiblichkeit als Hohepriesterin deutscher Zucht und Sitte und beseelt vom Christentum.“(Kolonie & Heimat 1910). Das war ein Fehlschlag, da die Südwester Männerwelt den Frauenwert für sich anders definierte: „Die ledigen Männer in unseren Schutzgebieten suchen nur Frauen, die kräftig zupacken können, unbelastet von Bildung und Erziehung, ohne höhere Ansprüche.“ (Aus Golf Dornseif). Tja, da hatte man sich wohl schon so richtig schön an die unterwürfige schwarze Weiblichkeit in der Kolonie gewöhnt. Zähneknirschend musste der Frauenbund einsehen, dass die Absolventinnen ihrer Schulen keinen Fuß über die Schwellen der dürftigen Wellblechbehausungen der Farmer setzen würden....

und der Baken

Die SMS Möwe, ein Vermessungsschiff der deutschen Kaiserlichen Marine, lief am 2. Juli 1906 auf der Kaiserlichen Werft Wilhelmshaven von Stapel und war hauptsächlich in den deutschen Kolonien und ausländischen Gewässern im Vermessungsdienst eingesetzt.

Folge 2 1908 wurde Sohn Karl Wlotzka geboren, der 1988 verstarb. Vater Paul Wlotzka hatte sich ein Fuhrunternehmen in Swakopmund aufgebaut, das den Norden von Swakopmund versorgte. Zu diesem Zweck baute sich Paul einen Verschlag aus Schiffsplanken und später aus Lehmziegeln, um am heutigen Baken von Wlotzka Proviant und Wasser zu lagern. In Hulda Rautenbergs Buch “Das alte Swakopmund” heißt es ,,Für die Deutsche Kolonial-Gesellschaft führte der Geologe Dr. Reuning Prospektierungsexpeditionen durch...Bei Fahrten in die nördlichere Namib fuhr ihn der Fuhrunter-

nehmer Paul Wlotzka.

Er deponierte etwa 28 km nördlich von Swakopmund in der Nähe eines kleinen Riffs, wo man gut Fische fangen konnte und wo ein Baken (”WlotzkaBaken”) stand, im Voraus Wasser und Futter für die Pferde, um den Aktionsradius auszudehnen.”

Fußball war übrigens im damaligen Südwestafrika Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts ein beliebter Sport, den auch Paul Wlotzka auf seine Art unterstützte.

Dazu Hulda Rautenberg: ,,Fußball spielte man seit 1905 in Swakop....Zu besonderen Spielen gegen auswärtige Mannschaften ließ Wlotzka für Zuschauer, die den Weg zum Feld im Swakoptal nicht zu Fuß machen wollten, einen Vierspänner vom (Hotel) Kaiserhof (heute Bank Windhoek) abfahren.”

William Mc Donalds berichtet in seinem Büchlein “Destiny of Walfisbay” 1915, dass

der ortskundige Kutscher Paul Wlotzka den Senator und Juraprofessor Joaquin Fernandez Prida aus Madrid mit einer einachsigen, von vier Pferden gezogenen Droschke zwecks Grenzmessungen durch die Wüste kutschierte.

Wegen Grenzstreitigkeiten um das englische Gebiet um Walfischbay war der spanische König Alfonso als Vermittler 1908 aufgerufen, diese zu schlichten. Alfonso beauftragte seinerseits wiederum den Juraprofessor etwa 1910 damit.

Siegfried Engels vermutet, dass Paul Wlotzka auch der Kutscher war, der die Forschungsgruppe versorgte, die im Norden von Swakopmund bis Omaruru arbeitete.

Wahrscheinlich meinte er die Forschungsgruppe der Landvermesser, die dem Vermessungsschiff der deutschen Kaiserlichen Marine SMS Möwe halfen....

Ford Ranger is South Africa's Best-Selling Vehicle in 2017 Ford's SA-built Ranger continued to dominate new vehicle sales in May 2017, earning its third month as South Africa's top-selling model - and claiming leadership of the sales charts year-to-date.

A total of 2 875 Rangers were sold in May, giving Ford leadership of both the overall market and the LCV segment.

The Ranger was also one of the country's top exports for the month, with 4 432 vehicles destined for customers in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

With 603 sales in May, the Ford EcoSport continued its unrivalled dominance of the compact sport utility vehicle (SUV) segment - a position it has maintained since launch due to its eye-catching styling, outstanding space and versatility, plus exceptional value for money.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, the Ford Mustang again topped the sports car segment, as another 81 customers joined the exclusive club of Mustang owners in South Africa.

Ford South Africa sold a total of 4 902 vehicles in M a y, e a r n i n g 11.7% share of the t o t a l i n d u s t r y, which ended on 41 783 for the month.

Total industry volumes were 2.6% down on the 42 912 vehicles sold in May last year, according to the National Association of Auto-

mobile Manufacturers of South Africa (NAAMSA).

The passenger car segment fell by 2.5% for the month, ending on 26 317 units, while light commercial vehicles fared only slightly better, dropping 1.5% year-onyear to reach 13 410 units.

"The South African economy is clearly under pressure at the moment, and this is reflected in the reduced levels of purchasing activity in the new vehicle industry," said Neale Hill, Director of Marketing, Sales and Service for Ford Motor Company Sub-Saharan Africa Region.

"However, we are buoyed by the continued strong demand for the Ford Ranger which is once again the bestselling vehicle overall in South Africa this year. It vindicates the massive investment Ford has made into its local manufacturing operations, and the work that has been done to ensure that the Ranger line-up is not only competitive, but sets the benchmark for the industry.

With overall industry sales down, dealer profitability remains essential for the survival of any brand. "It's encouraging to note that Ford achieved 92.7% of its sales through the dealer channel, which is well above the total industry average of 90.2%," Hill added.

“Africa Cup stays in Namibia !”

Recap 2017 Africa Cup Inline Hockey Contributed

We have just finished our first ever Africa Cup Inline Hockey tournament, which was hosted at The Dome, Swakopmund. The tournament games started on Tuesday, May 23, 2017 with an opening ceremony before the Namibian Senior Men’s team played the Moose Knuckles from South Africa with a final score of 9-1 in favor of Namibia.

Opening ceremony featured a dazzling and daring performance from Pole Dance Fitness Swakopmund (Charly Debortoli and Sonja Keil), speeches from Mr Horst Fritze (Dome Trustee), honorable Cleophas Mutjavikua (Governor of Erongo Region), Freddy Mwiya (Sports Commission Chief Administrator) and Dave Hammond (Africa Cup Delegate and tournament organiser in conjunction with the Namibian Ice- and Inline Hockey Association - NIIHA).

We had 8 teams compete in the Men’s division with 2 pools of 4 teams each playing an initial round robin format. Players from all over the world formed club teams to compete at this years Africa Cup Inline Hockey Tournament.

Brazil, Canada, India, Spain, Germany, Norway, Switzerland, Sweden, USA, South Africa and of course Namibia all had players from their respective nations participating in this tournament.

Thursday night concluded the end of round robin play with Team Namibia Juniors taking the number 1 seed in pool B and the Labeda Bulls edging Team Namibia Mens team in the game of the century.

Both teams put on a show for the over 800 spectators in attendance and the Labeda Bulls scored in over time clinching the number 1 seed in pool A.

Saturday was non-stop action with each team playing twice as the playoffs wound down. The SAS Bluebirds beat the Dare Devils 7-3 for 7th place. SA Moose Knuckles edged the Taunus Wild Hogs (Germany) 4-3 for 5th place. The bronze medal went to Team Namibia Junior’s who beat the Peregrine Falcons 10-5 and the gold medal was won by Team Namibia Senior’s beating the Labeda Bulls 5-2 with Cello Baas (Namibia Senior) scoring 3 goals and winning the MVP award.

Top Goalie of the tournament went to Gerrit Pchalek (Namibia Junior). Top defenseman went to Matt Wojcik (Labeda Bulls) and top forward went to Dave Hammond (Labeda Bulls) We had 2000 people in attendance for the week, excluding all players and officials with another 8000 viewing online. None of this would have been possible without our sponsors. Spar Namibia, Bank Windhoek, The Dome Swakopmund, Swakopmund Hotel & Entertainment Centre, Nissan Pupkewitz and Woermann Brock Hardware.

We hope to build on the great success we had this year and be back next year, same time, bigger and better.

Namibia in the 49th Battle of Atlanta World Championship Contributed Julian Müller, Delano Müller and Lesley !Hoa?b is going to represent Namibia in the 49th Battle of Atlanta World Championships, in Atlanta, Georgia, in less than two weeks' time. Great excitement is in the air, after they were chosen as part of the Namibian team. 10 Kickboxers from South Africa will be joining the Namibian team in Atlanta, Georgia.

The three man team from Namibia will be fighting under the banner of RCFAI (Ring Contact Fighting Arts International). RCFAI is a world structure in Africa and is aiming to develop the continent's vast talent in this field. They are very well prepared and working hard to achieve great heights.

The kickboxers from Namibia also participated in the Jungle War VIII Tournament of Ring Contact Fighting Arts International in Pretoria earlier, where they achieved great results.

The Namibia Kickboxing Federation sent a team of 6 fighters who faced South Africa's team and they came home with 9 Gold and 6 Silver medallions, in the Jungle War VIII competition that was held the 4th of March 2017.

Delano was also awarded with the title of Junior Sportsman of the year 2016 at the annual Sports Awards. Last weekend also marked a significant achievement for this young man of only 13 years old, by being nominated at the Regional Sports Awards (RASA 2017) as one of the top 3 nominees out of 10 countries. Sensei Lesley is the coach at the local club in Walvis Bay, namely the Namibia RCFAI & Kickboxing Academy, where he gives classes and motivates, inspires and teaches students of all ages in the sport of Martial Arts.

Julian, who is doing his preliminary studies in Germany, in preparation of a degree in mechanical engineering, has also been doing public speaking, often giving inspirational talks against drug abuse and other topics concerning the youth. They said that they are humbled and deeply thankful for the honor to represent Namibia in Atlanta, and for the trust that the World president of Ring Contact Fighting Arts International (RCFAI), Master Joe Viljoen is putting in them. The Namibians will leave for Atlanta on 12 June, to participate in the Battle of Atlanta, from 17 & 18 June 2017.
