2m tourists Continued from page 1 Group of Companies Sven Thieme, could not attend the Inauguration Gala Dinner, but his extended family, including his children and his parents, were present. O&L Group Human Capital Director, Berthold Mukuahima, was one of the Group's representatives at the podium on Friday night. He thanked President Hage Geingob and his government for the stability in the country, and said the Group would continue to invest in Namibia. Mukuahima said the Group has 5 596 permanent employees, of which 250 are employed at the Strand Hotel, and soon it might be 6 000. He said the new Strand Hotel Swakopmund, an investment of hundreds of millions of Namibian Dollar, symbolises the commitment of O&L, who has been part of the country since 1919 – almost a hundred years. The President in his address commended O&L for the way in which they treated, cared for and uplifted their employees. Geingob reaffirmed government's commitment to eradicate poverty, and to work towards the goals of the Vision 2030 framework. The President said he was proud to help build the 'Namibian House'. The message of the evening was that we are all building Namibia's House together....the foundation was our Constitution, then, brick by brick the house has been built, and the President says we are working on the last phase - the roof, , the plastering of the walls, so that there will not be colour, or race, or anything divisive when the world looks at the Namibian House - it will be a proud house, built on good governance, human rights, sound economic policy, as inclusive as can be, it will be a proud house of unity and equality - he has also warned that we should heed the calls of those in need, so that we can all live happily and wellprovided for, all under one roof. He says the government will do what it has to do - but with the backing and will of the people, so that those having wonderful dinners like these will continue having them, while the poorest of the poor will also have something on the table each day - and so that we shall truly live together in harmony, happiness, and with thankful hearts for our beautiful country with its beautiful people. Many ministers, deputy ministers and business leaders were under the more than 100 invited guests. The President lauded the company for its bold investment in the economy of Namibia, and said the Strand hotel was now a proud part of the country's infrastructure - besides very special video participation and presentation of the dishes on the menu by some members of the team of chefs and sous chefs, the evening was filled with music by Trio Feminale, well-known Namibian artists, like Lize Ehlers and Big Ben and even a beautiful song by the personnel of the Strand Hotel, at the inauguration ceremony. At the event, the president, and the First Lady were invited to be the first honorary guests at the “Stammtisch” in the Butcher and Brewer Restaurant in the hotel, and also received their own personal beer mugs, that will be kept for them in a special cabinet in the restaurant. The Presidential couple and their children spent the weekend as guests of the new Strand Hotel Swakopmund.

Passenger liners to make eight calls to year-end at the port of Walvis Bay A total of 6 passenger liners are scheduled to call at the port of Walvis Bay up to year-end, with expectations it could boost visitor-figures with at least five thousand people. Two of the passenger liners are making dual calls, according to Namport's port log. The first call is scheduled for 21 November when Seven Seas Mariner will arrive early in the morning. The vessel makes another call on 13 December. Two sister ships, MS Marina and MS Nautic calls a day apart, respectively on 25 and 26 November. Early in December Walvis Bay will experience a bumper-time when three

liners call a day apart – Marina on her second visit on 2 December, followed by Silver Cloud on 3 December and MS Insignia on 4 December. Seven Seas is scheduled for her second visit on 13 December and on 22 December the passenger liner Europa is scheduled for arrival.

Two suspects in gang rape case now state witnesses Mavourlene !Gaёs

The Namibian Police in Swakopmund say, two suspects on the run after an alleged gang rape in Mondesa last week were traced, but would not be charged in the case. It is understood further investigations and a statement by the victim indicate they have not participated in the rape, but would become state witnesses as they have certain crucial information at their disposal that would be used as evidence by the State. Twenty-one-year-old Chris van Wyk and 18-yearold Desmond !Owos-oab had been arrested shortly after the alleged gang rape that took place in the early hours of 31 October when the victim was walking home from a club. They already made a first appearance in the Swakopmund magistrate's court and remain in custody pending a formal bail application later this month if they obtain a legal representative. “During investigations it was discovered that although there were initially four men who attacked the women, only two of them allegedly raped the victim. That is what the victim told the investigating officer and the two men will be used as witnesses” Nampol spokesperson Detective Chief Inspector Moses !Uwu//khaeb said on Monday. !Uwu//khaeb added, apart from the two accused apprehended last week, they also located a witness who is believed to be high school age. The person already gave his statement to the investigating officer.

But it is not yet out of the woods for the two men who were first thought to be on the run and then made state witnesses. The Prosecutor-General might decide they must be charged as accomplices as they possibly did not try to stop the rape from taking place. Meanwhile, the body of a teacher of the West Side High School in Swakopmund was found in her home's living room on Friday night. The police suspects suicide. The victim is believed to have hung herself in her living room with an electric cord. Detective Chief Inspector Moses !Uwu//khaeb confirmed the incident and said it took place in Mondesa. The deceased was identified as Juanitha Tjimune (37). The deceased left no suicide note. In another incident a Windhoek teacher who was on a visit to Swakopmund with her colleagues collapsed and later died in a Swakopmund hospital later the same day. !Uwu//khaeb confirmed the incident and said the teacher arrived at the Municipality bungalows with her colleagues on Friday. “While having a meeting with her colleagues, she collapsed and was taken to the hospital. Upon arrival at the hospital, she was declared dead.” The teacher has been identified as Viola Mapani, a Zambian national.

Beautification of Uis to start Erongo Regional Governor Cleophas Mutjavikua on Wednesday launched a project which will involve the renovation of more than 80 dilapidated Government houses at Uis settlement. Uis is located some 196 kilometres east of Swakopmund in the Daures Constituency. The two-month project, which is called 'The Beautification of Uis', is funded by the Namsov Community Trust and Gazania Investment at an amount of N$250 000. The project is being implemented through the office of Governor Mutjavikua. The first step in the process is pre-renovation work and the painting of the houses. Updating Nampa about the project on Thursday, the control administration officer in the governor's office, Edward Gaingob said the pre-renovation work includes fixing cracks on the walls and floors, as well as replacing broken windows. These are dilapidated houses which date back to 1960 and have lost their colour. The aim is to make sure the settlement looks good for tourists who are visiting,” said Gaingob. The work is being done by community members under the supervision of experienced painters and builders. “The community members receive a small commission for the work, because these are their own houses,” he said. Gaingob further noted that private houses for community members might be painted after the project is completed if there is still some paint left. “The regional council wants to keep the settlement in good shape so that if it will be upgraded to village status, it already looks good for our visitors,” the control administration officer said. Filthy J.C. Harries Park makes M.O.T.H. flee in disgust Floris Steenkamp The M.O.T.H. (Memorable Order of Tin Hats) Escarpment Shellhole in Walvis Bay was left no option on Sunday morning, other than to move its Remembrance Day Parade from the war memorial in the J.C. Harries Park to its club house, on account of the filthy state the park is in. To the shock and horror of the Old Bill of the M.O.T.H. Escarpment Shellhole, Lee Liguma, he found a man defecating under the war memorial when he arrived at the park on Sunday morning to pack out chairs, the podium and memorabilia for the Remembrance Day Parade. “I could believe my eyes. With a public toilet only a few paces

away this man opted to relief himself right under the monument. It was then when I saw how untidy the park is with litter strewn around and I decided this year we will rather conduct the Remembrance Day pro-ceedings at the club house,” a very disappointed Liguma told namib times. It is understood to be the first time that the Re-

membrance Day Parade is not held at the war memorial. Remembrance Day, which marks the day in 1918 when all hostilities of World War 1 ended, is held every year in all nations of the Commonwealth on the Sunday the closest to 11 November. Tribute is then paid to the fallen at approximately eleven minutes past eleven o'clock.

Car thieves suspected to be minors Mavourlene !Gaёs

The police in Walvis Bay is cautioning residents to keep an eye out for the “new kids on the block” when it comes to their vehicles. NamPol Community Affairs Office's Sergeant Ileni Shapumba is urging the public to be extra careful as there are several youngsters involved in motor vehicle theft. Shapumba says over the past few months, they received quite a few complaints regarding the theft of vehicles. He said, “There is an issue of young boys committing crimes in Kuisebmond, one of these boys is the son of a local mechanic in the loca-

tion.” He adds although they are not completely sure how the minors operate, they suspect the culprits are using a bundle of keys. “I think they are using either one key or a bundle of keys to gain access to these motor vehicles. If these boys find your vehicle

parked outside in the street, they will be able to start your car, even without needing your keys. We do not know where they gained the experience to hotwire the vehicles.” The culprits apparently break into the vehicles and either take the owners'

possessions in the car, or simply take the car for a joyride and just leave it somewhere else when the vehicle runs out of fuel. “Some people come to the station to report what happened and open a case, but as soon as they find out that the culprit is the child of someone they

know (like in the case of the mechanic's son), they do not open the cases.” Shapumba is urging the community to report these cases even if they get the vehicle back and know who the guilty party is because the law must take its course. This makes it difficult for the police to do their job. “If the cases are not being opened, we

Sergeant Ileni Shapumba cannot do anything about it. If they, who are the potential complainants, do not

want to send the guilty parties to jail because of their age, our hands are tied.”

Uncle rapes 14-year-old suspect at the time of the incident. “We suspect this is not the first time the uncle has raped the minor as they also lived in the same house. These kids really appreciate it and the amount of happiness these boxes added to their lives is Crazy, something so small has such a huge impact on their lives,” Tanya added. This year the junior town councillors had their handover a bit different from previous years and delivered all the boxes to each respective school. They delivered boxes to all the primary schools in Swakopmund: Hanganeni Primary School, Tamariskia Primary School, Vrede Rede Primary School, Festus Gonteb Primary School, Swakopmund Primary School, Namib Primary School, West Side Primary School, and Atlantic Primary School. COSDEF's Students exhibition Sharlien Tjambari The Swakopmund Community Skills Development Foundation (COSDEF) Arts & Crafts had a student's exhibition on Friday. The Graphic Design, Fine Art, Jewellery, Leather Work, Fashion Design and the Performance Art Departments all took part in the exhibition. According to Ferdinand Hengombe, the Training Coordinator of COSDEF Arts and Craft and Goldsmith Coordinator, the main idea behind the exhibition is to showcase the skills and talent of the exhibitors, because they have been working very hard during the past six months. “We thought of introducing this platform to the rest of the community in Swakopmund to come and see what we are doing here and for marketing purposes as well,” said Hengombe. The outcome that they want from this exhibition is job opportunities for their students says Hengombe. The exhibition commenced on 7 November and will run until 28 November, 09:00 -17:00 every day. Seminar identifies women's issues in modern society Liesl Losper

Baby dumping, family planning, financial discipline, wills and testaments, substance abuse and gender based violence were identified as some of the main social issues women, as mothers and wives, face everyday in a modern society.

(Fltr) Dr Gloria Behr, Pastor Mara, Mrs Suama Aamutenya, Sister Olivia Nandi, Mayor Uilika Nambahu, Prophetess Jennifer Moetie, Dr Tracy-Lee Gontes, Mrs Tangeni Mokalabatho, Mrs Florence Tchisuku and at the back Mrs Annerene Biewenga.

These issues identified were taken under close scrutiny on Saturday during a women's conference in Walvis Bay, hosted by the Healing Wound foundation. Influential women were selected by the foundation to address the approximately one hundred women who attended this event. The women in attendance are all standing in leadership roles in their respective work- and business environment and said after the conclusion of the event they gained a lot from the mentorship. The list of speakers include the mayor of Walvis Bay, Clr. Uilika Nambahu, including Dr Tracy-Lee Gontes (Dentist, SME/Entrepreneurship), Sister Olivia Nandi (NAPPA Clinic), Annerene Biewenga (Bank Windhoek), Tangeni Mokalabatho (Motivation Speaker), Suama Aamutenya (Business owner), Dr Gloria Behr and Prophetess Jennifer Moetie. Mayor Uilika Nambahu was the keynote speaker. She emphasised her concerns over baby dumping, teenage pregnancy. “We as women should form an organisation to assist young mothers and teach them the way forward with regard to family planning. The needs that a child have that the young mother must satisfy, were also addressed. Nambahu called for a general drive to raise the personal and professional profile of women throughout the region.

Swakopmund Residents Association Newsletter 2015

Stop Littering! - Letter from Disgruntled reader

The Committee and members were saddened by the bad news of the sudden death of Andy Bauer, husband of our efficient secretary Margit d'Avignon. He was amongst others a very talented musician and nobody who ever listened to his trumpet will forget the precious moment. We herewith express our deepest sympathy to you, Margit. The local Authority Elections will be held on Friday, 27 November. It is utterly important that the Residents Association gets the maximium vote to have a stronger representation in council. The way in which SWAPO accorded themselves Erf No 3486 size 4363sqm and being valuated at ± 2 million Namibian Dollars for the price of N$30 000 is a scandal and an example that the ruling party will ruthlessly act in their favour and steamroll any opposition. We don't want another council that works for the interest of their party and squanders public money. Alderman V Steinkopff has been a councillor for 11 years, his stand in the opposition was not always easy but he courageously stood his man and fought for the best interest of our town, not a political party. Thank you Mr Steinkopff for what you have done for Swakopmund. Our very strong team of candidates consits of the following persons: Wilfried Groenewald, Kery McNamara, Abisai Gaseb, Deon Claasen, Bernhard von Seydlitz, Gert Cloete, Margit d’Avignon, Vera Leech, Holger Ahrens and Hilde Geduldt. The Swakopmund Residents Association is not a political party getting directives from Windhoek, we are genuine Swakopmunders and know the needs of our town. We have got a chance to change matters without party leadership in Windhoek interfering. We desperately need your help to put up posters and to act as supervisors on election day in the various polling booths. The more volunteers we get the shorter the shifts will be, please contact our Secretary Margit d' Avignon and give up your name. The new Strand Hotel has opened its doors and is a welcome asset for tourists and locals alike. The appearance of the building improves the whole ambience and the surroundings should be brought up to standard to match the Hotel. The little jetty in the Molebasin is still in a desperate condition with “No Entry” boards warning the pedestrian. Can't this be fixed and the walkway to the mole point renovated? At last the renovations of the Police Office have been concluded and for the time being the flags are clean. Workers are busy repainting the street markings in anticipation of the approaching season and the benches along the beach have been repainted. Unfortunately the parking bays for seniors, marked with a big yellow “E” have been reverted to normal, the seniors are very unhappy about this as the taxis do park wherever they like anyway. Another big eyesore is the large erf between Mandume Ya Ndemufayo and Theo-Ben Gurirab streets bordered by Moses Garoeb street. All the buildings on there are falling to pieces and not very inspiring for the scholars staying in the hostels nearby. There is so much rubbish lying around which can easily become a health hazard. The buildings should be demolished and the ground cleared of all debris. On the opposite side of this erf is the “Bahnhof Square” development. TransNamib had a big job on their hands to relay the tracks further east and make way for things to come. A big Billboard with an architects impression of the development has been put up almost two years ago and saying “Completion end 2015”. Well there are still a couple of days left??! To close off we again repeat our appeal for your vote and equally important your assistance before and on election day. The council we are voting for now will be in office for the next five years, don't sit back and complain, get active and vote for the Residents' Association, the organisation consisting of Swakopmunders and not getting instructions from Windhoek.

Attached are pictures of how our neighborhood looks like EVERY DAY after recess at Flamingo Primary School. In the end other schools' parents and children have to sacrifice their weekends to clean up the beaches and desert where this rubbish inevitably ends up. The children, parents and teachers of this school should be equally ashamed of themselves. Thank you.

I am not normally one to complain, but the situation is getting out of hand.

Development of the Bahnhof Narraville to host second Global Leadership Summit Square Shopping Centre Sharlien Tjambari in limbo The development of the Bahnhof Square Shopping Centre which was set to commence in April 2014 already has not only been robbing Swakopmunders from a train station, but questions are asked by the Swakopmund Residents Association as to when the project will actually gain momentum. The news of this massive shopping centre development first brought happiness to the public, but later turned into disappointment of the public. To date, there is no sign of the construction starting any time in the near future. On a previous occasion Paolo Shipoke, spokesperson of the developer, Stark Properties Development blamed the delay to “issues between TransNamib Holdings and the Ministry of Works and Transport. These issues are seemingly not yet resolved, as according to the Executive Spokesperson of TransNamib, Mr Struggle Ihuhua consent has not yet been given by the Ministry of Works and Transport for the development to commence. “The development is behind

schedule, however, we await the consent and ministerial approval before any work can commence as far as the Bahnhof Square Shopping Mall is concerned. The construction of this facility needs to talk to the TransNamib Governing Act, hence the wait for the consent by the Ministry.” Ihuhua further said that TransNamib cannot start with any work on the development unless the Ministry has agreed for the development to commence. “As soon as the consent by the Ministry is secured, the project will commence ASAP” Ihuhua emphasized. For now, it seems Swakopmunders will still have to wait for a long time for the development of the shopping centre. In the meantime, without a proper railway station, Swakopmund's public is the worst affected.

GLS previously held at the WBCC Madelaine Laubscher The Global Leadership Summit (GLS), an annual highlight on the calendar of churches from across several denominations in Namibia, will as from this year be presented twice in Walvis Bay, as opposed to a once-off event as it was up to now. GLS focuses on management, business and personal development of the individual with Bible principles as the basis. The event is fully booked in Walvis Bay each year, hence it was decided to present it twice as from now, to also give more local community members the opportunity to attend. The GLS took place on 9 and 10 October this year at the Walvis Bay Community Church and will again be presented in Narraville on 27 and 28 November. According to one of the organisers, Mr Zane Jansen, the second GLS this year will be held at VGK Narraville in order to accommodate more people residing in Narraville and Kuisebmond. The GLS is a community of leaders committed to advancing the Kingdom of God on earth. “We declare it is our responsibility to fuel our passion and sharpen our leadership skills as we strive to create the future God has intended for this world. We are convinced that effective, Christ-centered leadership is critical to advancing the Kingdom of God on earth. We believe that the Church is at the pivot of this plan. However, the influence and impact of the church is felt most fully when everyone that's a part of a church is fully living out the life God has called them to live. This includes leaders from business, government, education, non-profits and multiple other spheres of influence. That is why leaders from all over the world gather together at the GLS and come together to fuel our passion and sharpen our leadership skills,” he said. The GLS was founded in 1992 by Willow Creek Association (WCA), serving approximately 7 000 churches members representing over 90 denominations/networks that train leaders in 90 countries. “It is a world-class experience designed to help you improve and embrace your grander vision—the reason God called you to lead. Broadcast LIVE in HD from Willow's campus near Chicago to over 375 Premier Host Sites in North America and later around the world, you are invited to join an expected 260 000 leaders in 2015,” he concluded. Anyone interested in attending can contact the Walvis Bay Community Church or visit www.glsnamibia.org.

WALVIS BAY

Whilzahn Gelderbloem in action on the cast of The Hidden Sky.

Coastal resident in first international feature film Madelaine Laubscher

Miss Whilzahn Gelderbloem (21) from the coast stars in the film The Hidden Sky, that was produced in Walvis Bay earlier this year. It is not Gelderbloem's first time to star in a full length feature film, and has

more on her resumé including starring in “Katutura”which is Namibia's first full

length feature film. “I was part of the main cast of Namibia's first feature film, Katutura.

It will be in cinemas as from 20 November . I feature Nancy in the movie. I was introduced to The Hidden Sky when the director, Pablo César, and the executive producer, Pablo Ballester, came to Namibia for auditions and later castings. They offered me the role of Dr Lavinia,” said Gelderbloem, adding her passion in life is acting and she is very excited as The Hidden Sky is an international feature film.” She will play a strong independent young doctor who recently finished her studies in medicine and joined an NGO, called the Woman Aid Fund. The Fund is dedicated to help the less fortunate women in a Damara village. “This is where my character and the lead male character, Hermes (Pablo Padilla), meet for the first time. It developed into a romance. Our two characters and another, Theo (played by Gift Uzera), go on an adventure. We develop great friendships in the movie,” she

said. According to her, taking on this role was tough, because she had to learn to speak Spanish and Damara. “Lavinia communicates mostly in Spanish. As far as characterisation went, I did not find it difficult to connect with Lavinia. Our personalities are actually very similar. She is a focused, humble person who only wishes to help others. She should not be mistaken as weak. She knows what she wants and works hard to get it,” explains Gelderbloem. She recently returned from a two week electronic media trip to Indonesia, where she was the host of Lila Swanepoel, a travel documentary producer. When asked about her immediate future after The Hidden Sky, Gelderbloem explained she currently works as a freelance actress and is a radio personality at 1FM. For 2016, she plans more travelling and to futher raise the profile of her career.

Pipe rupture spills semi-purified water Floris Steenkamp

Commuters were greeted by this pipe burst in 5th Road in Walvis Bay on Friday, caused when a coupling detached from the semi-purified effluent line which the municipality utilises to water public gardens. A huge pool of water formed in no time, causing motorists to slow down. In the aftermath, residents in the immediate area were relieved that the water spill was semi-purified effluent and not drinking water. Any pipe ruptures, including drinking water, must be reported to the municipality of Walvis Bay immediately. The number to call is - 0811288328.

Dankseggingsdiens ontlok klagtes

Maria Davel-Wallis

Samaritan comes to Springbok's rescue Madelaine Laubscher A springbok was lost and bewildered after people allegedly threw stones at the animal which caused it to flee towards the Vineta Jetty in Swakopmund, over the weekend. According to information received a local vet, Dr Winterbach attempted to dart the animal at first, but failed. “The Springbok was cornered in Welwitschia Drive, but another attempt to dart the animal also failed. The third attempt proved to be successful and within five minutes, the animal was brought under control. Dr Winterbach and Ministry of Environment and Tourism (MET) employees brought the animal to safety and released it in the vicinity of the Swakop River soon after.” It is believed the Springbok made a full recovery. “A word of appreciation goes to everyone who assisted namely Dr Winterbach, MET, Hendrik Burger from First Response Security Namibia and the Swakopmund Neigboorhood Watch,” the source concluded.

Liesl Losper The Coastal Kickboxing team recently competed in Stellenbosch and will compete in Orlando USA in July 2016. Destiny is the annual NMA/ISKA

Photo by Liesl Losper National championship. It is attended by teams from all over the world and South Africa with an average attendance of about 1100 competitors and several thousands of spectators over two days of competition. It is open to juniors and seniors of all ages and belt groups. Belt

groups compete together under the weight and age groups. Lower grades do not compete against higher grades. There are 4 divisions in general: Novice (white & yellow) Beginner (orange & green) Intermediate (blue & purple) Advanced (brown & black belt). There are divisions for Points & continuous fighting, free style forms, weapons forms, traditional Kata & Kumite, Self Defence, breaking for

juniors & seniors, High kick challenge, Extreme kicking, Submission GI & NO-GI Grappling, Tag team matches, Sport MMA and Sport Full Contact & ISKA Full Contact Kickboxing (for adults only). Non contact competitive divisions such as high kick & breaking where there is no member against member fighting. It is very much an individual challenge

division. The Walvis Bay kickboxing Club would like to give a huge thank you to Mr Hendrik van der Westhuizen of Namibia Breweries Ltd/Vigo for their generous sponsorship towards their tour to South Africa and Mrs Claudia Lofty-Eaton of Remax for their sponsorship towards the team clothing. Without these sponsors, it would not have been possible they said.

More boxing rings needed countrywide According to the Namibia Professional Boxing and Wrestling Control Board (NPBWCB) more boxing rings are needed in Namibia to cater for the increasing interest in the sport. There are only seven boxing rings in Namibia, with a number of regions forced to share one ring. The government bought the seven rings from China in 2009 for the boxing development programme under the sports ministry. A boxing ring is set on a raised platform and is square, with a post at each corner to which four parallel rows of ropes are attached. The chief administrator of the NPBWCB, Joel Kaperu, said many boxing clubs do not own their own boxing rings and rely on those provided by the Namibia Boxing Federation. “There is a need for training rings because some boxers are training in classrooms or under trees, said Kaperu. Boxing clubs use rings provided by the government under the supervision of the boxing federation. Some of the rings are very old, and their excessive use is leading to rapid deterioration. Their condition has in the past led to fights being stopped during boxing events for their safety to be assessed. NAMPA

Cosafa Cup launched in Windhoek The 2016 edition of the Confederation of Southern African Football Associations (Cosafa) Cup was officially launched in Windhoek recently. The 2016 Cosafa Cup will be staged in Windhoek at the Sam Nujoma Stadium and Independence Stadium from 15 to 29 May. Namibia are the current champions after winning the cup competition at the Moruleng Stadium in South Africa in May this year. Minister of Sport, Youth and National Service, Jerry Ekandjo, pledged Namibia's full support to the hosting of the regional tournament next year. He added that the competition will give Namibian youths a lot of opportunities and will also bring a number of African countries, especially in the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC), together. The draw for the 2016 Cosafa Cup will be hosted in Windhoek in April next year. NAMPA
