Shack fire

“It appeared that she was alone in the shack when the fire started”, explained Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu, Erongo regional police crime investigations coordinator.

The victim was rushed to the Usakos state hospital and then transported to Windhoek where she died. The cause of this deadly shack fire is under investigation.

The wild horses of the Namib face extinction

Over the years, the wild horses of the Namib have entered the hearts of people across the globe.

Millions of dollars have been donated by thousands of people over the last three decades to provide feed for the horses to see them through the drought periods, and the Foundation has laboured to transport and deliver this feed to ensure that the horses make it through these tough times. It seems that it was to no avail, given the intransigence of MET to act in the present situation. The Ministry has a responsibility to the horses and an accountability to these benefactors, and to Namibia and its people.

The wild horses of the Namib are among the top ten tourist attractions in Namibia. They embody the wild and free spirit of the country, have been the subject of numerous documentary films and are used to promote Namibia as a popular tourist destination. They are an important part of Namibia's history and heritage. The loss of this population will do untold damage to the brand Namibia.

If MET does not act, the world will look askance at Namibians, who let their population of wild horses die on their watch when simple solutions were readily available.

MET, the future of the wild horses is in your hands! And time is fast running out.

We are about to lose our Namibian wild horses.

There is no more time to deliberate. Over the weekend, tracks and drag marks were found leading to the hyena den, a clear indication that the last foal has been taken by the hyenas. The pack will now, once again, predate on the adult horses targeting mainly the mares until not even one is left.

The clock is ticking. The situation is critical. The Namibian wild horses are on the brink of extinction.

We call on the Ministry to urgently take definitive action before the entire population is decimated!

Police warning public about random police patrols

A case of reckless and negligent driving has been opened against a German National after the vehicle him and his wife were traveling in veered of the road and rolled several times between Okahandja and Karibib. In the meantime, three more accidents have been reported in the Walvis Bay area alone.

It is alleged that Dr Uwe Jens Dehio (75), and his wife, Ruth Martha Wiegard Dehio were traveling on the B2 road from Okahandja towards Karibib. The accident happened on Friday 7 December at around 13:10. According to the Spokesperson of the police in the Erongo Region, Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu, the white Toyota pick-up veered off the road at around 32 km before Karibib which resulted in the car overturning and rolling several times, causing the couple moderate injuries.

Dr Uwe Jens Dehio sustained head and back injuries and his wife sustained a broken left arm and a shoulder injury.

This year, police have set up both mobile and permanent roadblocks in all towns including Swakopmund, Walvis Bay and Karibib to deter crime and prevent accidents on the roads, this was mentioned by Erongo Regional Commander Commissioner Andreas Nelumbu during festive season briefing on Friday.

According to Nelumbu, the police will conduct random patrols and other crime prevention operations to increase police officer's visibility and they will be able to respond to the pressing needs of the community during the holidays. “I should warn motorists, drivers and even passengers to be prepared for the journeys. Drive safe, stick to the speed limit and resect the rules on the road. Ensure your vehicles fitness, tyres and avoid overloading and the public should report suspicious behaviours on the road to the police”, said Nelumbu.

Nelumbu further urged drivers to cooperate with

the police by knowing the suspicious people they load onto their vehicles and to report them immediately. The community is urged to watch over their property and that of their neighbours.

“We encourage people to swim at designated places and if you can't swim, do not attempt to swim, avoid alcohol misuse and also avoid visiting unsafe places at night”, concluded Nelumbu.

The festive season briefing took place at Yianni Savva Police Station/roadblock site on 7 December. The festive season operation for 2018/19 commenced on 26 November.

The Namibian Police's traffic unit is only a call away this holiday season, thanks to several dedicated cell phone numbers to dial for each of the coastal towns as well as Karibib and Omaruru. It is crucial to save these numbers on your cell phone, in order to notify traffic officials of incidents of reckless behaviour on the roads and also in the event of accidents.

In the event of noticing or experiencing reckless behaviour of other road users, or suspecting an incident of drunken driving for instance, it is important to pay attention to the description of the suspect's vehicle: colour, if possible type of vehicle, visible marks like a bumper sticker etc and of course most impor-

tantly a number plate.

It is advisable for drivers who are traveling with passengers to immediately alert these passengers to identify the various features of the vehicle and if possible even taking a picture with a cell phone of the suspect vehicle. Don't try and do these things yourself whilst driving, as you could up be the one causing an accident.

Money Map training sessions was hosted by Bank Windhoek and Adonai Trust for over 250 inmates across the country. They have all successfully completed the training sessions.

Eighty-six inmates from Walvis Bay started with the sessions. The sessions were then completed by inmates in Elizabeth Nepembe Divundu and Keetmanshoop and concluded in November 2018. The two-week sessions hosted a total number of one hundred and twentyeight inmates at the Elizabeth Nepembe and Divundu Correctional Facilities situated in the Kavango – East Region. The fourth and final Money Map training session also took place at Keetmanshoop at the Keetmanshoop Correctional Facility which had forty-two participants.

I am presented with the wonderful opportunity to welcome all of you. Tonight, we gather here to celebrate the day of unity.

Usually at this time of the year, we are normally compelled to take stock of our achievements and challenges in order to plan for the next year. Although we have faced difficulties, we should look upon them as opportunities to challenge ourselves to new height levels and growth. 2018 has by no means been an easy year but there's also much to be grateful for. There should be gratitude in abundance for the fact that we can rely on family, friends and work colleagues for their kindness and support.

As we are on the eve of the festive season, let us look to 2019 with much hope. Soon we'll be at the beginning of a new year when new resolutions are happily adopted, only to be abandoned soon after.

But as long as we remain hopeful, the determination to improve ourselves personally and collectively should never forsake us.

Let us use this occasion to start adopting and enjoying the thrill of giving – giving our time, thoughts and ideas, giving a helping hand to those less fortunate and more deserving than ourselves.

Let us plan together for the future, instead of criticizing and attacking one another. Let us end sowing seeds of discord, because in unity we are much stronger. Let us stand together to acknowledge that your achievements should be my achievements too, if we work towards a common cause. Let us embrace and celebrate our differences, our humanity, and our total being as never before.

Above all, let us do these things in the spirit of unity this Christmas season. And let us carry that forward with us and adopt it as one of our New Year's resolutions- to stand together united. With these few words ladies and gentlemen, enjoy the rest of tonight's program.

Erongo Social Services hosts Christmas Function for the elderly Eileen van der Schyff Erongo social services hosted their annual Christmas function for the elderly on Thursday 29 November.

Close to 100 elderly people enjoyed a warm plate of food and a Christmas hamper which this year was sponsored by Mr Francois Jooste of Walvis Bay Spar. “We want to thank Mr Jooste and everyone else in the community who supported our organisation through the year, “said Mrs Janie Brits from Erongo Social Services. Erongo Social Services supplies a weekly basic food hamper to 90 plus elderly people, which are put together from donations from the community. She went on to say that the joy it brings the under privileged is unbelievable and on behalf of Erongo Social services they extend their gratitude and blessing to all who were involved with this good cause throughout the year.

Erongo Social Services is a non-profit registered welfare organisation. It is a well –established and respected family care organisation which has been providing social and welfare services to communities in need since 1957. The two ESS offices, one in Walvis Bay and one in Swakopmund proves accessible, community-based developmental and counselling services to people and communities in need. This organisation run six programmes and projects.

The family preservation program is aimed at equipping adults and children with appropriate life skills. In order to provide comprehensive services the programme incorporates Play Therapy for Children, Relationship/ Marriage Guidance and Enrichment, Marriage and Divorce Counselling, Parental Guidance, Adoption Counselling and Domestic Violence Counselling.

The child protection program is to protect children, by keeping them safe within placement that will enable them to

reach their full potential.

Safety placements of children, children's court investigations, foster care services, family re-unification services and adoption services also form part of this programme.

The weekly feeding project provides an one stop service where older persons have access to counselling and therapeutic services and social assistance with information and referrals.

The ESS also provides food parcels to individuals and families in Swakopmund and Walvis Bay, who are struggling to put food on the table. These people generally receive little or no income, usually as a result of unemployment, disabilities or disease.

Whilst on the food parcel programme, they are advised to access government grants if they are eligible.

The school feeding program in Kuisebmond, Walvis Bay provides ± 100 primary school children with a meal on a daily basis. This is sometimes the only meal these children receive. The ESS is in partnership with Promise Land, a charity organisation, for obtaining and distribution of products

The Education project is for children whose parents/guardians cannot afford to pay their school fees or buy their school uniforms or stationery.

Because of this, these children are unable to attend school.” We are currently catering for Primary and Secondary Schooling and this project pays the children's school fees and buys their uniforms and stationery.”

For fundraising purposes as well, the ESS launches each year a big breakfast function for 300 plus women, with entertainment like a well-known and experienced speaker, music, auctions, gifts, etc.

By doing that, they help women to amplify opportunities by making funding accessible by ESS; Help to support women through interaction with ESS to empower women; Help women to understand their rights – and how to fight for it.

Christmas party games everyone will love Everyone loves a good party game – especially at Christmas. There is no better way to encourage guests to start mingling. Christmas parties are the perfect chance to pass down family traditions to future generations.

Whether that is drinking hot cocoa while playing cards or playing festive Christmas sons while doing the limbo as a family.

Make sure to keep the traditions going every year. Here are some game ideas for this Christmas.

20 Questions - Christmas edition: 2 and more Players One player, the answerer, picks a Christmas themed object. All other players ask the answerer “yes” or “no” questions to guess what the object is. If no one guesses correctly after 20 questions, the answerer has won and picks another object for the next round. If someone guesses correctly, they get to pick the object the next round.

Candy Canes (Holiday Spoons): 3 and more Players You will need a deck of cards and 3+ people circled around a pile of candy canes, one less than the number of players. Everyone takes turns pulling cards with the goal to be the first to get four of a kind (ex, four Kings). Once you do, take a candy cane as stealthily as possible. Once that happens, everyone else races to grab on the remaining candy canes. The person who doesn't get a candy can is eliminated. Do this until one winner remains.

Santa limbo: 3 and more Players Have participants put a “Santa belly” under their shirt using a pillow. Place a limbo stick at a starting height. Then line up, and one by one try to limbo underneath (with the Santa belly) until everyone has tried. Slightly lower the stick and have those who made it through go again.

Continually lower the stick until one winner remains.

Christmas Carol Pictionary: 4 and more Players Write down a list of Christmas Carols on separate flash cards. Divide players into teams. One person draws from the pile of cards and has one minute to illustrate the Christmas Carol. If their team guesses correctly, they get one point. Make sure to alternate team artists.

Teams take turns until one reaches twenty points.

Christmas Memory Game: 2 and more Players Pick eight Christmas images (ex. Gift, Santa, Snow, etc). Draw or print two of each so you will have a total of sixteen cards. Now place cards on the table in 4x4 layout. Each player gets a chance to pick a card, then try to find the match. When a player finds a match, they keep it, get a point and get to try for another match. Play until someone reaches the predetermined amount of points to win.

Stocking Guessing Game: 4 and more Players First you need a host to put random items in a stocking, tie a ribbon or string around the top of the stocking so

that no one can peek. Sit in a circle and pass it around to let everyone feel what is inside.

Give them note cards so that they can write down their guesses. The person who guesses the most correct items wins.

Christmas Charades: 4 and more Players First, write out this list of Christmas terms to act out.

Separate everyone into teams,

then get one person from each team to do the acting. Like regular charades, the actors are not allowed to talk or make signals of any letters. Every time a team guesses correctly within the time limit, they get one point. The first team to get twenty points win the game.

Security while shopping No holiday is complete without regular outings to the shopping mall or a day in town. Unfortunatley criminals too like to frequent these spots, but not to shop. They are watching out for any possible opportunity to steal.

When visiting malls at the coast or going to town, it is advisable to do the following to prevent criminals from spoiling your holiday:

·Travel light. Try not to take a hand-bag with all your valuables along. Take valuables without which you can still manage and rather lock it away at

Lets go ship spotting If you happen to stay at Langstrand, the Dolphin Beach area or you visit the Walvis Bay Waterfront over the holiday season, you might be able to spot a few very interesting ships that visit the port of Walvis Bay between today [19 December this year and 9 January next year].

Avoid becoming the victim using an ATM

Be always alert and remember the following easy tips: Always observe your surroundings before a transaction.

When possible, take a friend along, especially at night.

Reduce time spent at the ATM by having your card out and ready to use.

If you see anyone or anything suspicious while conducting a transaction, cancel your transaction and leave.

If an ATM is obstructed from view or poorly lit, find another ATM. Never key in your pin before being prompted to do so by the ATM. Stand close to the machine when keying in your PIN so that other people cannot see your number.

Use hand and body as a shield when typing in your PIN. Remember, your PIN is the key to your account.

Never give your PIN to anyone (Not even a bank official is required to know your PIN. (Keep your PIN a secret).

Do not count cash at the machine – wait until you are in a safe place.

Never accept assistance from a stranger at an ATM or allow yourself to be distracted when performing a transaction.

If someone tries to “ASSIST” you at the ATM, and you feel it would be safer to “PLAY ALONG” you could key in the incorrect PIN or leave the ATM immediately.

Check that the card in your possession is yours before and after every transaction.

Treat your ATM card as cash.

Vows to hold regular protest marches throughout Namibia Sharlien Tjambari The murder recently of Swakopmund resident Lindie Prinsloo, by her boyfriend, has spurred Tasneem Ochs to found the non-profitable organisation Namibians Standing Against Violence (NSAV). NSAV is on a mission to curb Gender-based Violence so prevalent among especially Namibian men.

NSAV recently held a demonstration in Swakopmund to highlight the scorch of GBV in Namibia. The demonstration ended at the Swakopmund main police station where the crowd protested in silence, burnt candles to remember the victims of GBV and displaying placards to carry various anti-GBV messages across.

Ochs explained the reason why they chose to protest on Friday 9 November was to coincide the protest march with Lindie Prinsloo's funeral at her home town of Outjo.

Prinsloo was killed the Friday prior to 9 November, by her former boyfriend who then committed suicide.

NSAV wants to take the fight to new heights.

The organisation will organise itself in towns across Namibia through so-called “admins” and each month they will be holding marches in as many towns and cities across the country to keep the anti-GBV flame burning.

“The idea is to synchronise these marches in such a manner that it takes place countrywide on the same day and time every month. This

is not just for Lindie alone. It is for every victim of GBV, all mothers, daughters and children who are and have been victims of violence.

This is for every Namibian out there with an outcry for help”.

GBV is on the increase in Namibia. So also, violence against children. This urged Swakopmund Constituency Councillor of the Regional Council, Juuso Kambueshe, to plea for the communities at large to join hands and make Gender Based Violence a topic of discussion.

“GBV needs to be addressed”, Clr Kambueshe insisted recently.

“I am not condoning murder and violence, but we need to start having a discussion on why these things are happening. Let us not wait every time for these heinous acts to happen and then react. We can really solve this together”, explained Clr. Kambueshe.

Adding, “as men we need to be embarrassed.

We have to be ashamed. You have to say it is disgusting to be a man. Let's atone and start cooperating to have a cleaner society. A society that is progressive-minded. We need to talk about these things openly.”

A Christmas lunch recipe

Sunday Rib Roast Total: 2 hr 25 Level: Easy Yield: 6 to 8 servings

Ingredients: One 3-rib standing roast 1 tablespoon kosher salt 1 ½ teaspoons freshly ground black pepper Mustard Horseradish Sauce, recipe follows Mustard Horseradish Sause: 1 ½ cups good mayonnaise 3 tablespoons Dijon mustard 1 ½ tablespoons whole grain mustard 1 tablespoon prepared Horseradish 1/3 cup sour cream ¼ teaspoon kosher salt Directions:

Two hours before roasting, remove the meat from the refrigerator and allow it to come to room temperature.

Preheat the oven to 260 degrees Celsius Place the oven rack on the second lowest position.

Place the roast in a pan large enough to hold it comfortably, bone-side down, and spread the top thickly with the salt and pepper. Roast the meat for 45 minutes without removing the meat from the oven, reduce the oven temperature to 160 degrees Celsius and roast for another 30 minutes. Finally, increase the temperature to 230 degrees Celsius and roast for another 15 to 30 minutes, until the internal temperature of the meat is 50 degrees Celsius. Be sure the thermometer is exactly in the centre of the roast.)

The total cooking time will be between 1 ½ and 1 ¾ hours. Meanwhile, make the sauce.

Remove the roast from the oven and transfer it to a cutting board. Cover it tightly with aluminium foil and allow the meat to rest for 20 minutes. Carve and serve with the sauce.

Unfortunately, holiday activities can have a devastating effect on our environment if we don't stay within the rules set to

protect our natural beauty and biodiversity.

The coastal areas fall within a series of contiguous protected areas, namely the Skeleton Coast Park, the Dorob National Park, the Namib Naukluft Park and the Sperrgebiet

National Park. By following all rules and regulations, you are assisting in the conservation of our coast and its biodiversity thus ensuring sustainability.

The Do's Familiarise yourself with

the Parks' Rules and Regulations and the regulations related to the harvesting of marine resources.

Adhere to all the municipal By-laws in place.

Obtain a written authorisation from Ministry of Environment and Tourism (MET) offices for entering or camping in all parks and adhere to the park rules.

In the National Parks, remain on demarcated routes and do not venture into other areas without a qualified guide.

Obey any legal order or instruction given by a Lawenforcement Officers.

Comply with the instructions on signboards, pamphlets or communicated in any manner.

Enjoy the dunes between Swakopmund and Walvis Bay with your 4x4 / quad bike/motorbike in the designated 'Off-Road Vehicle' (ORV) area (central and southern part of the dune belt) where a free permit from MET is required.

Inside the ORV areas, stay on the dunes and avoid slip faces, gravel plains and vegetated areas.

In the Dorob National Park: Motocross bikes or quadbikes are ONLY allowed to be driven on the beaches between Swakopmund and Henties Bay, and on proclaimed roads and clearly marked MET tracks and roads.

Obtain your permit for harvesting any Marine Resources from the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources (MFMR). Ensure to respect bag limits for fish, rock lobster and white mussels.

Ensure that tour operators whether in aircraft, boat or car keep a safe distance from wildlife.

The Don'ts Do not drive off the road except on demarcated ORV areas– adhere to legal requirements. Off-road driving negatively impacts on the desert gravel plains, the lichen fields, and the breeding birds and destroy

the aesthetic beauty of the area. Dune driving is dangerous and were allowed should be undertaken with a professional, qualified guide.

Off-loading of quad bike and motorized bike between Walvis Bay and Swakopmund is only prohibited at designated offloading areas (the Dune Belt between Langstrand and Walvis Bay).

Vehicles and people on foot are not allowed in closed or exclusionary areas such as the Damara Tern breeding areas, Swakop River, Lichen fields.

No overnight camping is allowed on the beaches or in the dunes without permission from the Ministry of Environment & Tourism (MET).

Do not leave your litter behind - use refuse bins and skips provided or take your rubbish home. That also include discarded

fishing line, hooks, bait wrapping, empty bottles and tins.

Do not drive over vegetation–small animals and vegetation are essentials for the desert ecosystem, your tracks will destroy them and leave permanent scars on mudflats.

Do not leave bait or fish on the beach: Either take it home or return it to the sea.

Fish and bait left on the beaches attracts scavengers like jackals and gulls that predate on other biodiversity.

Do not feed wildlife – fed wildlife become dependent on “hand-outs” and become aggressive when no food is given to them.

Festive Season Message by the Manager Traffic Services Mr Melvin Cloete “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.�

John 3:16 It is against this spiritual background that I therefore call upon all Namibian road users to live the spirit of love during this festive period.

As we spend time with our immediate- and extended families, let us use this quality time to rededicate ourselves to being more appreciative of one another and loving towards these special people in our lives.

We should also think beyond our immediate and extended families. Let us think of all road users on the roads, locally and on the national routes, to ensure that we look out for one another's lives and safety.

Many of us will find ourselves on the

roads, travelling to our respective holiday d e s t i n a t i o n s . We should all ensure that we arrive alive by, looking out for one another. This year, let us THINK road safety by taking a united and committed approach towards ensuring all Namibians and visitors from abroad are safe on our roads.

Therefore, let us all participate: law enforcement agencies, drivers, cyclists, passengers and pedestrians.

Being amongst family and friends is always a joyful time, a time for laughter, a time to revel and celebrate.

However, we should avoid alcohol abuse or the use of any other intoxicating substances during this time.

These activities pose a risk to human life by contributing towards senseless violence,

avoidable accidents and unnecessary injuries and deaths. Let us therefore endeavor to celebrate responsibly and ensure that this Christmas will be memorable for everyone.

The Festive Season is upon us. The Holiday season is filled with happiness and celebrations, BUT it can also be a time of danger and sorrow for road users. It seems everyone is in a hurry trying to wrap up their shopping and make final preparations to enjoy festive celebrations. As you're dashing around town, it is important to keep road safety on top of your mind. Streets are busier and drivers are distracted by their holiday to-do-lists.

This season calls upon all of us to be alert and circumspect when we use our roads. Fata-

lities and injuries are sudden, violent, traumatic and the impact is long lasting and often permanent.

Festive seasons are generally characterised by high traffic volumes, especially in the coastal towns with fatalities over this period remaining unacceptably high.

Apart from the national industry shutdown and school holidays, this period is also a characterised by religious pilgrimages and mass events.

The risks are higher this year, especially over the Christmas and New Year's periods.

The Swakopmund Tr a ff i c S e c t i o n , together with all other road law enforcement entities, is on high alert to enforce road safety and in doing so serve our road users. Alone we may not be strong, but we need to stand together with our stakeholders, to de-

clare that road crashers, fatalities and injuries can be stopped.

I appeal and humbly request the Namibian public, especially drivers and visitors, soon to embarking on holiday trips all over the country, to be extra careful on all public roads. Road crashes are among the leading causes of deaths in our country.

Particularly during the festive seasons.

Therefore, I would like to urge road users to act responsible and obey the rules of the road. Respect traffic regulations, wear a seatbelt at all times, watch your speed, do not drink and drive, take a rest after a long distance of driving, and generally do everything that we advise to do in order to

stay on the safe side of the laws of this country.

Our data reveals that it is the young, productive citizens in the 16-35 age groups that are over-represented in road-traffic fatalities.

Yearly road causalities totaled increase, currently at 621 which is too high and it's too many which are the highest fatality rate in the last

Alcohol – the lurking danger

There is a direct relationship between alcohol abuse, acts of crime and accidents, according to Deputy Commissioner Tobias Gerber, the second in command of the Namibian Police in Erongo.

Deputy Commissioner Gerber made this remark recently at meetings at Walvis Bay and Swakopmund with community policing groups. Community policing groups in the coastal towns are neighbourhood watch formations, police reservists and community against crime organisations.

Alcohol abuse leads to most incidents of domestic violence. Domestic violence includes physical attacks, verbal attacks, emotional abuse and also abuse of a sexual nature where women and children are victims.

Alcohol abuse can also lead to other criminal acts like burglaries and robberies, whilst

people under the influence of alcohol in public alcohol outlets get involved in physical altercations. Stabbings and common assault are commonplace at liquor outlets like shebeens and bars.

Drunken driving, along with speeding, are the main causes of fatal road accidents. Drunken driving also causes accidents where people suffer damage to property and often these drivers leave the scenes of these accidents in order to prevent criminal prosecution.

Other forms of accidents where alcohol plays a role in deaths and injuries are: drownings, electro-cution, falling or other accidents in and around the home which leads to injuries and in some instances also death.

In Swakopmund bicycles and vehicles are increasingly sharing streets and roads and unfortunately it creates more problems and solutions. It is healthy for a society in general and for the environment where the use of bicycles is increasing.

However, motorists seem to have a disrespect towards cyclists, leading to accidents where life and limb is at stake. There are currently only a few bicycle lanes in town for cyclists.

In a recent interview with Namib Times cyclists say they feel motorists have no respect. They vented their frustrations with motorists' general attitude towards cyclists. Bearing in mind your chances of suffering serious injuries or even death when struck down by a vehicle is far bigger than for the motorist him or herself who are afforded protection by being in the vehicle.

One cyclist angrily voiced her opinion that lives of cyclists are in danger on a daily basis. She shared her experience when she was almost hit by a truck at the traffic lights near Food Lover's Market recently. The truck driver's excuse was he didn't see her.

“The lives of cyclists are in danger. We will die on these roads if the local authority does not act now.

We need more bicycle lanes”, she said. Not only are cyclists exposed to traffic dangers on the

streets, but many cyclists practicing along the national roads daily where they too have harrowing accounts of the dangers they suffer as a result of badly behaving vehicle- and truck drivers.

Namib Times contacted the Swakopmund Municipality to share the plight of cyclists. The Marketing and Communications Officer, Aili Gebhardt, had this to say on a very promising note: “Council is planning to incorporate bicycle lanes in the new development plan of town. To create bicycle lanes in the existing layout will be difficult. Council has called for consultants to structure the development plans within the boundaries of Swakopmund, which will include bicycle lanes and taxi drop off zones”.

The traffic section at the Swakopmund Municipality when contacted urged cyclists to write down the registration numbers of vehicles who put them in danger on the roads. Report these incidents and be prepared to testify against these drivers during criminal proceedings.

Ditching the razor in aid of the Cancer Association

Namib Desert 4 x 4 Club ended its social responsibility drive for 2018 on a high note recently, when all the men grew their beards for the duration of November. Through this effort the Club raised a total of N$6700-00 in donations for the Cancer Association of Namibia.

The money was donated to the Cancer Association last week.

As fireworks season approaches, the SPCA appeals to the community to prepare and to take steps to protect your pets: 1. Please ensure that your animals have some form of identity for example a collar and tag and/or microchip. Microchipping can be done by your local vet or contact the SPCA to get your animal microchipped.

2. If your pets are particularly frightened of fireworks, staying at home with your pets would be first prize, alternatively to ensure someone is able to watch them for you or keep your pets inside and draw the curtains and play calming music.

3. Entertain your pets by giving them something to chew on or play with, catnip is a great idea for cats.

4. Consult your vet or local SPCA for calming medication. Do not give medication intended for humans to animals.

Annual Christmas Pool Cup Swakopmund Pool Club will host their fourth annual Christmas Pool Cup on 15 December 2018 at Club Night Shift in Swakopmund.

The Coastal Open takes place during the festive season in Swakopmund when people from all walk of life decent on the beautiful coastal town to enjoy the Atlantic Ocean's cool breeze and to participate in a hive of activities on offer.
