West Coast FM celebrated its eighth birthday on Friday evening at the Indoor Sport Centre in Swakopmund. The venue was fully packed, with people showing up in vast numbers and local artists entertained the guests with live performances. At the same occasion, the Coastal Radio Station also launched their brand new office and studio on the first floor of the Indoor Sports Centre. Mexican, American and Namibian traditional delicacies were on the menu, with an open bar for the thirsty party-goers.

Mr Clinton Lang of West Coast FM said he was astonished by the number of guests that showed up. According to him he only got confirmation of 143 guests. Beauty Queen devastated after being stripped of her title Piquet Jacobs Walvis Bay Beauty Queen, Monique Smith, was temporarily stripped of her title as Miss Tourism Namibia (MTN) 2014 by the pageant Director, Venancius Rukero. She was allegedly unexpectedly stripped of her title and thus denied the chance to take part in the Miss Tourism World 2014 pageant in Venezuela later in November. The 1st runner-up, Asnath Humphries, from Keetmanshoop, would seemingly be replacing her and would represent Namibia at the Miss Tourism World pageant. According to Nikita Melani, who helped organising the MTN 2014 pageant in Walvis Bay, problems emerged when she made contact with Rukero, regarding arrangements for the trip to Venezuela. Rukero was apparently abrupt and could not give them answers. When they did not receive any information from Rukero, they contacted Air Namibia and the Miss Tourism World offices. Air

Asnath Humphries (first princess)

Namibia was to sponsor 2 business class tickets for Smith and her chaperone from Windhoek to Frankfurt, from where she was to pay for the connecting flights to Venezuela. After discovering that contact was made with these organisations, without his knowledge, working conditions with Rukero supposedly became very un ple as ant . Sh or tl y afterwards, Smith was stripped of her title and informed that she would no longer be representing her country at the international beauty pageant. Rukero is said to have left Walvis Bay without settling some bills, concerning the organising of the MTN 2014 pageant in Walvis Bay. Furthermore he allegedly pocketed the money generated from ticket sales. He denied this allegation, claiming that the Walvis Bay organisers took the money. According to Melani she had paid for all décor and flowers for the event, which she was supposed to be refunded for by Rukero, but for which she's still waiting. She also had to pay a food and wine bill of N$6 320, left unpaid by Rukero, at the

hotel which sponsored accommodation for the finalist and Rukero. The presenter of the event is also still waiting to be paid her fee of N$3 600 and according to her, Rukero claims he is waiting for money from Europe to pay her. There were also rumours that Rukero gave Smith's 2nd business class ticket to another beauty from Keetmanshoop, who claimed that she would be representing Namibia in Venezuela. All these claims were also denied by Rukero. Venancius Rukero, a former street child, is said to be well-known in the circles of Windhoek, as the founder and interim President of African Alliance for Responsible Tourism & Hospitality: the first African network for responsible tourism. The network represents tour operators, tour guides, travel agents and associations. Rukero is a known Namibian Red Cross (NRC) volunteer and also the founder of the Venancius Rukero Aids Orphans and Vulnerable Children's Foundation. The namib times contacted Rukero for comment on the allegations

which he strongly denied. According to him the reason for his decision, to strip Smith of her title temporarily, was because of her failure to sign the management agreement contract. “We cannot send her without having signed the contract,” he added. He also expressed his uncertainty that Smith, to him, seemed not a good ambassador to represent Namibia. He concluded, “It was my honour to work with Nikita Melani, but at the moment we are fighting. She has taken to Facebook to insult me and claims I have stolen money and I took sponsorships for own use, as I understand there was none. And even if I stole the money, Miss Tourism Namibia is mine, so it's my money anyway”. Smith admits to not signing the contract, due to particulars in the contract which she was not happy with. Supposedly these details, regarding the pageant in Venezuela, were not discussed with her beforehand. One of the conditions was for her to pay N$15 000 to Rukero as an entry fee, she noted. She would then also be expected to

pay for her flights from Frankfurt to Venezuela and back. In the contract it also states that if she were to participate in Venezuela and win prizes, Rukero would be entitled to 40% of everything. When asked, why these specifics had not been revealed before the competition, Rukero kept mum. The situation caused controversy when the news of Smith's title removal reached the social media (Facebook), with Namibians from all over the country expressing their views and opinions.

Process for phase 2 of Zambian Obtaining Fishing Permits Dry Port on track....

Obtain a permit from the Namibian Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources (MFMR) to catch fish or dive for crayfish and respect harvesting limitations.

Following the closure yesterday of the comment period on Phase 2 of the Zambia Dry Port, the draft Scoping Report and EMP will now be finalised. The assessment will review the comments and concerns raised by the public and if required, changes will be made to the documents. together with additional facilities including reception area, an office, ablution facilities, workshop and packing material storage. A single storey building is proposed due to its lighter construction; increased span and pillar height; and improved transport of materials within the structure. It will be about 1 860 m² in area and 15 metres in height; whereas the reception and loading areas will be about 2 900 m² in size. The remainder of the site will be interlocked and used for the manoeuvring and parking of vehicles. All the required procedures has been followed and commissioned via Quivertree Consulting to compile a comprehensive EIA report to be submitted to Namport and the Ministry of Environment and Tourism (MET) for approval. This draft Scoping Report and EMP was available to the public for review from 20 October to 10 November 2014 Further advertisements were placed on 24 October 2014 notifying the public of the proposed project and comment period available. Stakeholders were able to

submit comment up and until 10 of November 2014. Public Participation A public participation process was followed and consisted of a Background Information Document(BID), drafted and distributed to all contacts on the Stakeholders List on 23 September 2014 and various stakeholder meetings were convened to target input from key authorities and stakeholders. These were held on 30 September and 8 October and advertisements were placed in two newspapers, notifying the public of the meeting to be held on the 23rd of October 2014 at the Pelican Bay Hotel in Walvis Bay. The concerns highlighted at the Public meeting held on the 23rd October 2014 were: Noise Noise during project development Noise was identified at the screening stage as an issue of concern and a noise specialist study was commissioned and undertaken by Airshed Planning Professions (PTY) Ltd. As there currently no noise emissions in Namibia, the specialist study assessed

the predicted noise levels against the South African guideline values. The study confirmed that the position of the cold storage Facility building on the south west of the project area had a shielding for residents along 5th Road. In summary, the impact on residence to the South East of the development is considered to be medium. An acoustic barrier alongside 5th Road to be constructed to minimize the noise impact during operations. Operational Hours As far as feasible, noise generation activities should be limited to day-time hours. During the offloading of Vessels the cold store will operate on a 24 hour basis in order to minimize the time spent by the vessel in port. Normal hours should be between 07:00 – 18:00 Mondays to Fridays 07:00 – 13:00 Saturdays. Traffic Movement of Trucks during construction and when in operation? Project and Operational vehicles will not travel via 5th Road nor 5th Street as the Port access will be via Namport main entrance.

In a media release the CEO of Africa Union Cargo, Naeem Fortune stated that the first phase of the project was fully operational since 2011, and they were now focusing on the construction of a storage facility for up to 10-thousand tonnes of frozen fish products within the Walvis Bay Harbour. “Africa Union Financial Services (Pty) Ltd (AUFS) Namibia and the Investor Partners are proposing to develop, Phase Two now, a cold storage facility of twenty thousand square metres within the Walvis Bay Harbour. According to the Environmental Management Act (No.7 of 2007) the constructions of a cold storage facility at the port is a listed activity and require an environmental clearance certificate. Quivertree Consulting has been appointed by AUFS as an independent agency to undertake the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process. The purpose of the proposed facility will be to provide high density storage for up to 10 000 tonnes of frozen cargo. It will consist of a temperature controlled warehouse,

WHY? The marine resources are limited and currently some of them are overfished or over collected. It is necessary that everybody uses them wisely and carefully to secure the future harvesting needs by protecting the stock. Quantity/number of marine resources harvestable, minimum size limits of fish and crayfish that can be caught, open season etc. help to manage stocks to avoid the total disappearance of some species in our waters. Do not leave bait or fish on the beach! Either take it home or return it to the sea. This food attracts scavengers like jackals and gulls that prey on other bio-diversity. When you are back home after the holiday, it also inflates the predator population. Where can you get a license for angling, crayfish diving & bait/mussels collection?

Swakopmund Residents Association Newsletter In our previous newsletter of September we complained about the misuse of Libertina Amadhila Street as a race track and asked for a speed bump as a solution. The ink of the newsletter had hardly dried when one saw municipal workers already busy constructing the necessary obstacle for racers. Thank you!

Mr Juuso Kambueshe, the Mayor of Swakopmund (left), Sabina Kasena, Youth Development Officer of the Swakopmund Municipality and Mr Mandela Kapere, Executive Chairperson of the National Youth council

NYC lends a helping Sharlien Tjambari hand The Youth Development Strategy of the Swakopmund Municipality received donations from the National Youth Council of Namibia (NYC) on Friday morning at the Swakopmund Municipality. During the handover ceremony of donations, the Executive Chairperson of the National Youth Council of Namibia, Mr Mandela Kapere said “this is the start of a partnership between the Swakopmund Municipality and the National Youth Council of Namibia.” He also added that the role of the NYC was to help the youth become what they want to be. Swakopmund Mayor Juuso Kambueshe said the youth development policy/strategy allowed for the Swakopmund Municipality to gather information to contribute to youth issues. According to Mr Kambueshe, the program was designed to improve academic performance. The National Youth Council will also contribute towards the development of the Strategy.

A year ago we complained repeatedly about the bad condition of the palm trees along Arnold Schad promenade needing a decent trim. This was done very casually with hardly any improvement visible then. Today the trimming of the promenade palms is being executed very properly, as well as new plants being inserted announcing that spring has come. Another pat on the shoulder for our municipal gardeners, may they carry on with all the palm trees in the vicinity. We are happy to mention that workers are busy paving the open space in front of State House, the venue for the annual X'Mas market. There are a lot of benches opposite the State House which are never fully utilized, our suggestion is to shift some of them to the beach walkway leading from the old swimming pool towards Vineta. This walkway is very popular amongst the public but they would surely like to sit down occasionally and enjoy the sea-view. The very unsightly old swimming pool should have been demolished after the new one was taken into use. The latter has happened some two years ago but we are still faced with the ugly structure rusting away and nothing being done about it. The old Post Office building which was home to the municipal offices and has been standing empty for the last two years busy dilapidating has eventually been sold for the amount of N$ 15 000 000 (million) to Serve Investments who will develop this valuable property to the benefit of Swakopmund. Unfortunately some red tape seems to be preventing the development of Altes Amtsgericht, may the problems be overcome soon and another historical building restored to its former glory. Municipality is expecting quotes from experts to start with the renovation of Woermann Haus and Damara Tower, we are optimistic that by the end of next year all these valuable buildings have had their face-lift so that we can be proud of our town's unique architecture again. We must preserve your heritage. Residents are complaining about the re-occuring stench of sewerage water, this despite the new plant

which is still in the stage of teething problems and occasionally has to be supplemented by the old plant, hence the stench. Furthermore through the years layers of sludge have developed inside the pipes, this has to be flushed away by clearer water from the new system, as it can also cause unpleasant stench occasionally. With patience from the consumer's side this situation can only improve and should make the public happy again. As there was some urgent business for council still to do after the end October council meeting, the mayor rushed through the council meeting closing it very early. The few visitors from the public were flabbergasted and sent home with no explanation for that action. Mayor Kambueshe once again did not present a report of his activities in his official function as mayor of this town, this was done by his predecessors all the time in opening the monthly council meetings. The public whom he serves, after all, has no idea of the activities of the mayor and the duties and obligations connected to this important office. We herewith request the mayor to re-introduce this tradition related to his status and give us a monthly report of his duties performed. On the edge of the Swakop river, behind Alte Brücke restaurant and The Stilts accommodation at the entrance to the paintball facilities is an old well dating back to 1899 when it was taken into use and supplied the first water to Swakopmund. This landmark facility was in operation until fifty years later and played a vital role in the early development of the town. The well still exists today, surrounded by a concrete wall with a lid on top which is partly made of wood, all this is falling to pieces allowing a view onto the waters' surface as well as installations and posing a danger to children who might play there. We consider the restoration of this early municipal facility with a notice board giving its history to be an added asset to Swakopmund as a matter of urgency and herewith request the municipality's attention to this noteworthy historical structure. Cheaper coastal direct flights, soon

The CEO of the Namibian partner of Namibia flyafrica, Clifford Strydom of Nomad Aviation, has confirmed to the namib times that the airline will be introducing direct flights from Walvis Bay to Johannesburg and Cape Town by mid-2015. Victor Beukes Great, now Just need another mobile provider, so MTC can also stop ripping us off. Robin Tyson U can book now - go to their website. I flew last week with Mango for R1600 return Ct to Jhb - wonderful experience - online checkin, no silly “free” meals or drinks (R10 for coffee if u really want one) - just a good fare and efficient service - I really resent buying double brandies amd cokes for the passenger next to me and paying (no choice) for stuff I never use! Luther Mostert Kan dan 3 keer vlieg vir air namibia se eenkeer prys. Awesome. Jean Smith I'm booking my Cape Town to Walvis bay and Cape Town to Johannesburg as soon as the airlines

Mense praat so sleg van gay mense. Ons het ook gevoelens. Jy is goed opegvoed. Jy eer elke grootmens. Jy waardeer die fyner dinge in die lewe. Als is 'n helse fout.

Concerned parent claims bullying at local primary school

A very worried and concerned parent contacted the namib times this week, claiming that his two children at Namib Primary School are being bullied and also that discipline is lacking at the particular school. Oligen Swartz I had the same problem with my daughter 3 years ago, it got so bad to the point that she failed her class that year @ i took my child out of walvis altogether, send her to whk @ now she is happy @ doing very well thank God i did that! Johan Van Wyk If

something like that happen, just go to the the school and dissipline that bully yourself infront of the teachers and principle. Mabe than they will wake up. Oliver Nederlof Its so sad to hear these bullying stories happening in schools.

That is why there should be discipline in schools, to prevent bullying from happening. Teachers on playground duty should take responsibility and make sure it does not happen. Principals do have a lot on their shoulders, but they must also take responsibility and sort

this bullying problem and display discipline. Parents of those bullying children should also take responsibility and teach their children to not bully other children. Parents, teachers and principals must work together to prevent these bullying incidents.

Absalom Ndeshipanda Ekandjo Poor management at that natis! Seriously..reshufle must be done there! Anthea October The only question on my mind is? Why then do they close their offices on 15:30 from Monday to Thursday and on 12:45 on Fridays? If the staff go beyond the call of duty, why not prolong the office hours? Ritilish Carlos Mngadu Ndimulunde That chief of yours is corrupt... he must go to hell man. Laelenz Laelenz On my way back home from town lastnigth i noticed that Natis office were still operating the time was between 20:00 and 21:00, so does this Natis office operate till that late? I had also noticed that some cars park there till the nxts mrng it also looks like that people slp over there till mrng to get assistance! Wbay has lot of inhabitants seriously and i think they can opened 3 more Natis offices, 1 in

kuiseb, 1 in Narraville and additional 1 more in central town so that in town there will be 2 offices atleast! And more staff need to be appointed to carry out the work fast. Edwin Van Urk They’re office hours for registration is only Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings. Get a numbering system then you can just come past when it is your turn. Nobody has a week to do roadworthy. I have been trying for 2 weeks no luck. Evolve Fire Performers taking centre stage Piquet Jacobs

Fire performance typically involves tools or other objects made with one or more wicks, which are designed to sustain a flame without being consumed. Many people believe that fire remains the most important discovery of mankind. Fire holds the power to create and destroy and has fascinated people throughout the ages. Zelda Lourens, a practitioner of fire-spinning, started Evolve Fire Performers in 2002 here at the coast, but the current group was formed about 2 years ago. She first discovered fire-spinning in 1998 in a small rural town called Katoombain in the Blue Mountain Range, near Sydney, Australia. Through the years she trained many people that were interested, but none that were keen to do it full-time. “I was very happy when I got together with the girls and they were keen to perform on a more professional level”, commented Lourens. As with any other activities, fire-spinning has its challenges; playing with fire especially raises concern. Each performer needs to be aware of the danger they are in, as well as the audience. Hence they take into consideration for instance what to wear for personal safety and what the venue li-

mitations are for public safety. The group currently exists of 4 full-time performers, Zelda Lourens, Charly Taylor, Heidi Garbade and Dominique Hoffmann. A few more people are available for performances on a freelance basis. The group is preparing for the festive season, practising two to three times a week. A show called the Carnival of Flames, consisting of a fire, dance and music Extravaganza, is planned for the end of the year. There will be collaboration with other artists to combine fire with dance, props and instruments. This will be a huge event and the first of its kind in NamibiaThey will also be performing with Moon Goddess Dance Studio from Windhoek, Ombazu Drummers, Dance Factory, Sonja Keil and Savannah Collins, all from Swakopmund.

Baha'is celebrate the Birth of Baha'u'llah On 12 November, Baha'is around the globe and Swakopmund will celebrate the anniversary of the birth of Baha'u'llah, the founder of the Baha'i Faith. Gatherings are held in thousands of localities – in homes, at public facilities, at local and national Baha'i centers, and at Baha'i Houses of Worship. Baha'u'llah was born in 1817 into a noble family in Tehran, the capital of Persia. His given name was Husayn Ali. His father was a prominent and wealthy man who had been a minister at the court of the Sháh (emperor) and subsequently a governor of two provinces in Iran. Despite His privileged childhood, Baha'u'llah had no attachment to wealth. He developed a fine sense of justice and fairness at a very young age.

Throughout His life He would display these qualities. It was said that He could res olve problems nobody else could, and His deep knowledge of the Qur'án and the Hadíth, Islamic traditions, astounded many learned men. In 1853, He was exiled from His native land to Baghdad, where in 1863 He announced that He was the bearer of a new revelation from God that would bring unity to the peoples of the world. He was later exiled to Acre, in present-day

Israel, where He His unfading glory. By Him Who is the passed away in 1892. The following is one Truth! The Shrine of Bahá'u'lláh observed by Baha'i communities around the world in which they are celebrated, in accord with the principle of unity in diversity, a central teaching of the Baha'i Faith. This holy day was instituted in the Kitáb-i-Aqdas, His book of laws. The Birth of Bahá'u'lláh is one of nine holy days in the Bahá'í calendar that is celebrated by Bahá'ís in ways that reflect their diverse cultures. On seven of the Holy Days work is suspended. The Baha'i Faith is the youngest of the world's independent monotheistic religions and one of the fastest-growing, with five million believers worldwide. Baha'is view the world's major religions as part of a

single, progressive process through which God reveals His will to humanity. Major Baha'i tenets include the oneness of humanity, equality of men and women, eradication of prejudice, harmony of science and religion, universal education and world peace. In the following excerpt from the Holy Writings Bahá'u'lláh describes to key purpose of His mission and life-long suffering: The Ancient Beauty hath consented to be bound with chains that mankind may be released from its bondage, and hath accepted to be made a prisoner within this most mighty Stronghold that the whole world may attain unto true liberty. He hath drained to its dregs the cup of

sorrow, that all the peoples of the earth may attain unto abiding joy, and be filled with gladness. This is of the mercy of your Lord, the Compassionate, the Most Merciful. We have accepted to be abased, O believers in the Unity of God, that ye may be exalted, and have suffered manifold afflictions, that ye might prosper and flourish. He Who hath come to build anew the whole world, behold, how they that have joined partners with God have forced Him to dwell within the most desolate of cities! Swakopmund gymnasts going for gold Marshallino Beukes Swakopmund Gymnastics Club's representatives at the forthcoming Zone Six Gymnastics Championship sold hotdog rolls at the Cycle for Damian event at Rossmund Lodge on Saturday. The money will be used towards their Competition entree fees and also in support of little Damian.

The tired and thirsty cyclists, as well as supporters, friends and families, did not hesitate to quench their thirst and hunger at this girls' stall and according to them “business was good”. The Zone 6 Competition will take place at Walvis Bay from 1012 December. Gymnasts, Abigail Carew,

Darnell Jarmann, Ray-Corne Coetzee and Elisbé Swanepoel told namib times sport that they were aiming high and would try their utmost to go for gold at the competition. Their team mate, Meagan Meyer, also gave up her Saturday morning to support this fund raising venture.

Doing it again - for Damian Piquet Jacobs

On Saturday morning cyclists did it again for Damian, cycling distances of up to 45km in support of the little fighter. The event was a huge success with more than 150 riders entering all categories. The 45 km item, which was the highlight of the event, saw more than 70 entries, with at least 30 riders taking on the distance for the first time. This was for sure the main objective of the event, pushing boundaries while achieving the impossible; just like little Damian has proven to do over the past 2 years. The youngest rider to complete the 45 km item was Nolito Cloete, just 12 years old, with a lot of cycling potential and determination of note. Enrico Krohne, Damian’s cousin, also finished the ride, with physical assistance from Robert Steinmetz, who literally towed him for some distance. The oldest rider was Dr Roberts, who’s turning 70 next year. Rodrique Freyer, Marius Nasilowski, and Pierre Marais comple-

ted the distance in the shortest time, of one hour and 18 minutes, making the ride seem effortless. The amount of money raised was less than that of last year. It was deposited into Damian’s Trust Fund to be used for anything that he might need in future. Many entrants donated more than the required entry fee, and some other companies donated cash although they did not participate in the event. Through the Cycle 4 Damian event, more awareness was raised regarding his condition, in the hope that even more doors could be opened for him, as he will remain a patient for the rest of his life. “What impressed me most was the diversity of participants, and it gives me chills to think that the real essence of reconciliation lies in cycling,” Danny Beukes said after the event. “Eminent Bluestar Fi-

nancial Services would like to thank all the participants and Sponsors. Of great value were those who volunteered their time and own resources that morning. They are James and Michelle Wilson, Owen Wilson, as well as the Eminent Team, Mara and Christelle. A big thank you to EmedResque, who stood by for any emergency; also the Roads Authority, Municipal Traffic Department and Nampol Traffic Division who worked tirelessly to ensure the safety of the riders. There were fortunately no serious injuries for this event. The namib times remained our backbone for this event again, as the main sponsor and media partner, and we thank them. The ride would not have been so much fun without our water point sponsors, iConsult, J&P Hydraulics and Remax Coastal,” Beukes concluded.
