A giant sinkhole measuring twenty metres by forty metres and estimated at 10 metres deep occurred in the port of Walvis Bay on Saturday, shutting down all operations at berth number 5 for the foreseeable future. An investigation revealed the sinkhole occurred after a part of the quay wall on the seafront collapsed. This caused sediment to flow from under the quay floor into the sea and the cavity that formed eventually collapsed to form the giant sinkhole. An investigation revealed the collapse occurred on a section repaired in 1959. Repairs have already begun and Namport foresees the repair work to be concluded in the next two weeks. Daily operations at the port on berths one to four and six to eight are not affected. No fatalities or injuries were recorded.
