Under the watch of Kapenda Arandis has been making strides to attract investment from outside and to grow the town's economy which is traditionally linked to the uranium mining industry. Seasoned local authority politician, Alderman Immanuel Wilfried also took the reins as mayor of Walvis Bay for the fifth consecutive term on Wednesday. The mayor thanked the various quarters who supported his re-election and expressed resolve to continue to strengthen Walvis Bay local authority to stay ahead of the challenges facing the town. Namibia's acting fisheries minister Albert Kawana invited all trade unions in the country to a meeting with him in Windhoek on Tuesday, presumably to provide the practical way forward for the reemployment of hundreds of fishing industry workers who lost their jobs in the so-called Fishrot scandal.

Also the AttorneyGeneral of Namibia, Albert Kawana has been tasked by Namibia’s Head of State to probe the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources and the fishing industry to root out all possible avenues for corruption and nepotism
The scandal allegedly involved taking fish quotas away from fishing companies like Namsov and giving it to a foreign fishing company in exchange for bribes. Up to N$120 million in bribes have allegedly been paid to former fisheries Minister Bernhard Esau and five others by the Icelandic seafood company Sanjeri International. In exchange for the bribes, Sanjeri International allegedly received horse mackerel quotas taken away from Namsov. When Namsov crashed out of business as a result, hundreds of workers lost their jobs. In a meeting with these betrayed fishing industry workers on Monday, the Acting Minister of Fisheries, Dr. Albert Kawana, said a way would be worked out for these workers to be re-employed as a matter of urgency. That would involve releasing some fishing quotas in order to prevent the lay-off
