“While we fully understand the need for Namibia to assert itself in potentially lucrative trade deals that benefit the people of Namibia, trade deals that lead to the destruction of wildlife and the environment should be declined,” said Katherine Hanly of the International Marine Mammal Project. Increase in false insurance claims Piquet Jacobs The Namibian Police at Walvis Bay expressed concern this week over an increase of members of the public providing false statements to the police for fraudulent insurance claims.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Ileni Shapumba called upon the public to refrain from this, as this puts further strain on police operations and the person risk prosecution for making false statements to a police officer, defeating the ends of justice and insurance fraud.

The frequency of these occurrences, according to Shapumba, has started to increase and is believed to increase even more during the festive season. People are trying to make extra money out of insurance pay-outs, whether it be car theft, house break-in's or car accidents.

“To make a false statement under the oath is a very serious offence, not to mention a waste of time and resources during police investigations. Should these claims; made under false statements, be paid out it could lead to charges of insurance fraud. “It has happened in the past, therefore we warn the public because we are keeping an eye on these cases”, Shapumba commented.

Along with this Shapumba also warned counterfeit currency is once again making its rounds, especially the N$200 note.

“I urge the public to make sure the money they receive in stores or from any other transaction are the correct notes. Especially shop owners and retail stores, ensure the money customers use are indeed valid bank notes”, Shapumba said.

Corruption undermines democratic institutions, slows economic development and contributes to governmental instability. On 31 October 2003 the United Nations General Assembly adopted the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC). The convention was opened in Mexico from 9 – 11 December 2003.

OPM warns against slandering Prime Minister

The Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) issued a statement to warn against both media reports and reports on various public platforms accusing the Prime Minister Honourable Saara Kuukongelwa-Amadhila (pictured above) of abusing her position to advance the private interests of individuals.

The statement reads: “The office of the Prime Minister has noted with concern recent reports in the media and other public platforms suggesting that the Prime Minister has used her position to advance the private interests of individuals at the expense of the interests of the state and the public.

The Prime Minister strongly rejects these accusations as false and malicious. These accusations are baseless and aimed at tarnishing the name and track record of the Prime Minister.

The Prime Minister has always upheld the highest standards of ethics and integrity in all her dealings and has never compromised or failed to protect the state or public interests . At no point in executing her public functions did the Prime Minister acted in any manner that promoted the interests of her relatives or friends above those of the state and the larger Namibian public or to influence Government decisions in favour of anyone.

Besides that, as a policy maker , she has not been involved in decisions to allocate tenders as this function is administered by an autonomous body, the Tender Board of Namibia. Any individual who believes that he/she has evidence of interference by the Prime Minister in the allocations of state contracts in her current or previous public positions is challenged to bring such evidence out.

Further, any contract signed by her in whatever capacity she has represented the state were signed after thorough review and approval of Cabinet and after due advice and clearance by the state legal advisors.

It must be emphasized that any person with evidence to the contrary is advised to submit such evidence to the designated accountability institutions of the state for investigation.”

Earthlife Namibia is very concerned about the proposal by a Chinese company to undertake live capture of Namibian cetaceans and seabirds.

As an environmental CSO, Earthlife has sustainable development and environmental and social justice high on the agenda.

It is understood that the proposal for the live capture of Namibian marine animals include the following species: 1)300 – 500 African penguins annually; 2)5 – 15 killer whales (orcas); 3)50 – 100 common bottlenose dolphins; 4)50 – 100 Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins; 5)500 - 1000 Cape fur seals; 6) Various sharks.

When considering the species, and the lack of scientifically based knowledge by the proponent, the following aspects are of great concern: 1) African penguins are listed as 'endangered' on the IUCN red data list.

Their breeding grounds are confined and limited only to distinct areas within Namibia and South Africa. Since decades the population is decreasing, and any further reduction will have disastrous consequences for the species.

2) Orcas (killer whales) are rarely seen in Namibian waters, and a rough estimate indicates that there are around 15 orcas. They are listed

by IUCN as 'data deficient', meaning that the size of the population is unconfirmed.

3) Common bottlenose dolphins are considered globally to be threatened. The Namibian Dolphin Project (NDP), stationed in Walvis Bay, monitors the population since 2008 and estimates a population of about 100 individuals. Therefore if 100 common bottlenose dolphins are removed, this would wipe out Namibia's entire population.

4) Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins do not occur in the Namibian waters. This is a clear demonstration of the lack of scientific merit by the proponent.

5) Cape fur seals are not considered to be threatened. However, catching, relocation, and confinement of any wild species roaming in vast areas is extremely stressful and this artificial relocation might serve as their death sentence.

6) Various sharks are mentioned. This again demonstrates the lack of knowledge by the proponent. One quarter of all shark species are listed

by IUCN as 'threatened'.

Besides the fact that many of the species proposed are considered 'threatened' or 'endangered' by IUCN, they are under the protection of several international rules and regulations. Giving the green light for the proposal may imply the breaking of the law. Allowing the capture of certain marine species such as African penguins and orcas is also against the Namibian policy of sustainable management.

By accepting China's proposal, Namibia, having a globally respectable reputation by conserving its serene natural beauty, the abundant wildlife and biodiversity, and attracting tourists from all over the world, places this favourable ranking in jeopardy.

It is for these reasons that the Namibian Government is respectfully requested not to grant any permits for the capture of marine species and therefore rather to protect the indigenous animals and the uniqueness of Namibia.

Inline Hockey National Finals Winners The NIIHA Championships, the national finals of the Namibian League, were held at the Badgers Inline Hockey Club court in Windhoek from 25-27th November 2016. The top four teams in each age division were selected from their accumulation of goals and points scored during the season in league tournaments held across the country. These teams then competed in make or break semi-finals and finals to establish the 2016 Champions.

Swakopmund's Coastal Pirates went into the Finals with seven of their teams being the top seed in their divisions. Coming from the cool coast into the searing heat of Windhoek was a big adjustment, plus competitors had upped their game! There was fierce competition for the winning spots, with a number of teams experiencing scoring that went back and forth, and the very supportive spectators having their nerves stretched. The Coastal Pirates u18's lost their place in the finals, allowing Kamikaze to take the gold. The Coastal Pirates u10's, who'd only lost one match all season, were tied 1-1 at half-time in the final against Cazadores, but came back with strong determination to end the game with a 4-1 win. In a surprise turn, the Coastal Pirates u8 team managed to beat Cazadores to secure a place in the finals. Then after a 4-4 tie at the final whistle against the season's almost unbeatable u8 Scorpions team, managed to score the golden goal in match extra time! The Coastal Pirates's Open team showed their unity and skill as evident all year, 'mercying' the Scorpions opposition in their final match. The Masters Division remained in the hands of the Badgers club, with their teams coming 1st and 3rd. The Scorpions Ladies, seeded 3rd in the league, were delighted to win and take home the NIIHA Flag. The Coastal Pirates Club won seven of the ten Divisions.

The NIIHA Awards Ceremony followed the exciting hockey finals. Individual awards per Division for Top Scorers, Top Assisting Scorers and Top Goalies for the year were awarded as per the Namibian League stats. These, and the team awards, were sponsored by Theo's Superspar.

The Namibia National Olympic Committee officially released a press statement in which they announced the start of Junias' trial to commence from 25 January 2017.

The Olympic flag-bearer was arrested in August while representing the country at the Olympic Games 2016 in Rio de Janeiro on suspicion of attempting to sexually assault a housekeeper in the Olympic Village. The case attracted much attention as his arrest was the second case of sexual assault or rather attempt thereof against an Olympic athlete. The NNOC managed to get Junius out on bail before his light welterweight boxing match.

Junius has since not been able to return to Namibia pending the investigation against him. A written defence and request was lodged to allow Junius to return to Namibia while the proceedings are in progress. The Judge working on the case received these proceeding files on 29 November, yet on 2 December NNOC was informed that the request will not be granted as the trial will commence on 25 January 2017.

Konny Looser wins Desert Dash - again Erwin Leuschner

Once again Swiss cyclist Konny Looser won the Nedbank Desert Dash Solo men category crossing the finish line at 5:37 on Saturday morning.

He cycled for 14 hours, 37 minutes and 45 seconds.

This year's Desert Dash Cycle race from Windhoek to Swakopmund saw a record number of entrants. Close to 1000 cyclists from all over the world took on the daring task – many of which didn't make it to the end due to exhaustion or mechanical problems.

While Looser clearly won the solo men category, German rider Andreas Seewald came in second and crossed the finish line 22 minutes behind the winner. In third place came Jaco Davel from South Africa (15:42:19).

The Solo female category was won by German rider Rebecca Robisch (17:48:10), followed by two Namibian cyclists. Adele de la Rey came in Second (18:47:28), while Anri Parker came in third (21:31:27).

The two person men category was won by Tjipe Murangi (Namibia) and Max Knox (RSA) with a time of 14:52:11. South African riders Nichol Jordaan and Jana Kruger won the two person mixed category (17:40:22). The two person woman category was dominated by Namibian cyclist Vera Adrian and Lise Olivier from South Africa who won with more than one hour lead (16:56:41).

Many of the entries took part in the four person team categories. The four person men category was won by Namibian team MBM Laaities consisting of Marcel Holtz, Xavier Papo, Alex Miller and Tristan de Lange. The team finished with a time of 14:52:48. In second place came team Hollard Spoednicks (16:26:26) consisting of Andre Chistensen, Louis Prins, Jaco Lamprecht and Clinton Hilfiker. Stephen Chase, Richard Meeks, Greg Chase and Steven Paschke, riding for team Blood, Sweat and Beers, came in third (16:37:04).

The four person woman category was won by the Namibian and South African mixed team Fantastic 4. Natascha Kuehl, Estelle Lambert, Jax Coetzee and Melva Steenkamp crossed the finish line with a time of 18:56:50. In second place came Hubert-SchwarzRacing Team (21:03:19) consisting of German and Polish riders. The team consisted of Elfriede Schuhbauer, Britta Diehl, Laura Schwarz and Katarzyna Hage. In third place was yet another Namibian and South African mixed team: Coast Busters (21:43:51).

The team consisted of Louise Laas, Michelle Harmse, Caroline Viljoen and Helene Nepgen.

Less than a minute after the winner Looser crossed the finish line Team KIA Elite secured the win for the category four person mixed. The Namibian team, consisting of Martin Freyer, Michelle Vorster, Fanie Steenkamp and Piet Swiegers, finished with a time of 14:38:10. Yet another Namibian and South African mixed Team, Cycletec PSG, finished second (15:46:42). The riders for Cycletec PSG were Till Drobisch, Wim Steenkamp, Genevieve Weber and Norbert Meyer. Namibian riders Ian Grassow, Stefan Bohlke, Hans du Toit and Elanor Grassow, riding for Team FNB Vets, finished third (16:03:34).

The 369 kilometre long Desert Dash is anextremely exhausting bicycle race and this year proved no different. A strong wind, especially at the last few kilometres, made the ride extremely taxing while warm temperatures could be felt in the Namib Desert.

Two riders were involved in a very unfortunate accident during this year's Desert Dash.

Both riders, one male and one female, were admitted with serious injuries in a Windhoek hospital where they are being treated.

The last few metres the cyclists travelled through the Swakop River and ended up at the Tiger Reef Beach Bar. Here they were greeted by the cool Atlantic Ocean. Photos by Ulandè Viljoen

Finally made it: The four person men team Emcon 4some, consisting of John Erasmus, Eugene Ellis, Melkisedek Ausiku and Peter-John Christiane, finished on place 20 with a time of 20:13:28.
