Fire at Rössing’s FPR Plant Marshallino Beukes
A fire erupted at Rössing Uranium Mine’s Final Product Recovery (FPR) plant yesterday. The fire started around 13:00 and as a precautionary step, the fire brigades of Swakopmund and Arandis were alerted, to render support to the mine’s emergency response services, if it would Page 2 prove necessary.

The mine issued a short and to-the-point press release late yesterday afternoon and confirmed the incident. This statement notes that the emergency teams responded rapidly to bring Page 3 the situation under control. According to the mePhosphate dia statement, the affected employees were evacuated and the fire was extinguished. There were no injuries to employees, it was noted. The origin and cause of the
fire and possible damage to equipment or the FPR building is currently being assessed. Mining operations in areas are not affected by the incident and continue as normal, says Rössing. Unofficial sources informed the newspaper that the affected workers will be submitted to tests, due to possible radiation exposure. The Final Product Recovery Plant is where uranium oxide is stored for export.

Visitors from afar Caledonia meets Kuiseb
Leandrea Louw
Two athletes all the way from Scotland decided to take on our mighty and fierce Namib Desert. This expedition kicked off last week Tuesday, 3 February in Luderitz where they battled the dunes and fierce weather by running along the beach to finish in Walvis Bay on Tuesday. Ultra-runner Andrew Murray is a medical doctor who has worked at events such as Tour De France, the Olympics and the Commonwealth Games. Donnie Campbell, his teammate, is a personal trainer, and together they’ve covered more than 550 kilometers across the Namib Desert. Campbell and Murray are no strangers to extreme endurance challenges. Murray, 34, who also works with SportScotland Institute of Sport, has run a phenomenal 4 279 km from John O’Groats to the Sahara, and has won races at the North Pole, Antarctica and Outer Mongolia.
Campbell, a former Royal Marine Commando, once ran 296 km from Glasgow to Skye non-stop. These two were challenged by veteran expedition leader David Scott to take part in The Namib 550 challenge. The event was supported by expedition organisers Sandbaggers, while Edinburgh based film-makers, BigShot Productions, were there to document it. Following the expedition, the local community received a donation. Medical equipment and sports gear were donated to the local tribe along the Kuiseb river, the Topnaar Community. This expedition was
facilitated with the partnership of Live the Journey, a South African tour company, and Uri Adventures, a tour company that is also part of the concession agreement of the Topnaar Community. Chief Kooitjie of the Topnaar Community extended a hand to the Scottish team, where he welcomed them to Utuseb, with traditional dancers, learners of the JP Brand Primary School. The chief’s cycling team that also competed in the Desert Dash late last year, escorted the team into Utuseb. The two runners commented excitedly that the scenery was simply amazing. “It was defi-
nitely a challenge but this is definitely one of my favourite places by far. I wouldn’t mind doing this all over again,” Murray said. “This is just a small start that definitely has great potential.” The Mayor of Walvis Bay, Uillika Nambahu also addressed all present at the occasion, and complimented the efforts of Chief Kooitjie for the community. She encouraged the community to make use of sustainable methods to better the lives of the members of the Topnaar Community. She also expressed her appreciation to Mr Scott and his team for taking the initiative.

er people, too, who had received phone calls like that and were helped instantly after paying the requested bribe and getting preferential treatment. We contacted Mr Eric Libongani, Chief Communication and Marketing at the NHE, for his reaction. He replied, “I cannot comment on rumours or allegations which have no proof. We, however do not allow this kind of bribes within our company, we’ll have to investigate.”

Pensioners pleading for increase Leandrea Louw
“We are tired of promises! We have been independent for almost 25 years, we can't wait another 25 years! Getting a pension is not a privilege, it is our RIGHT!” This was the outcry from pensioners of Walvis Bay at a meeting held on Tuesday, for the Government to increase the pension from a measly N$600 to N$1 200. A mass demonstration is scheduled to take place on 21 March, where pensioners from all over the country will join forces
and meet in the Capital for a National Prayer Day. This nation-wide campaign also includes a petition to collect 100 000 signatures. Mr John Donald Isaacks (84), stressed the issue that pensioners are dying from starvation. “We receive medication, and we are always told that we should eat something before we take the medication, but they never ask, do you have something to eat? Our Founding Father, Dr Sam Nujoma, he is our Father, he is the father of the nation, shouldn't he be taking care of us?” “We have numerous resources, the tourism industry, the fishing industry, and millions of dollars are being generated, yet we cannot receive an extra few dollars”? Mr Isaacks also came forth with a few solutions, such as paying 2 cents more on a liter of petrol, 10 cents more on wine or beer to establish a Senior Citizens Fund that will be administrated by themselves, for their own
benefit. “We are not asking for much, we are starving and suffering. Those who are in charge of funds are only
using it for their own benefit”. “How do we let our people starve to death in a rich country such as ours?” Other residents said they were without a place to stay. “You can't even pay your water or electricity bill with that money. We are suffering. This has to end.” “How are our pensioners supposed to live off a measly N$600? This is an infringement on their Constitutional Rights,” these were the words of Community Activist, Jade McClune from the Destitute Children and Senior Citizens Association. “All facts clearly indicate that no one can live on a measly N$600. The rights of the pensioners are being violated. Their health and life's is being threatened. Parliamentarians live on salaries as large as N$50 000 per month, and our pensioners are only receiving a measly N$600? Where is the justice in that?” Numerous speakers at this meeting highlighted the fact, that the Government should take care of its
people, and that all the pensioners should stand together to get that N$600 increase. The annual budget for the
country is set to be submitted by the end of March to Parliament, and if diplomacy fails, they will approach the Ombudsman and the Legal Assistance Centre (LAC) for assistance before taking the matter to court. The pensioners of Walvis Bay will have a follow- up meeting early in March this year. A previous meeting was
also held in Swakpomund, where residents said that the government was spending millions of dollars on vehicles, salaries, and a state house, but that the pensioners were expected to live off N$600, and use that money to buy food, pay their rent, water, and electricity. Many are also taking care of their grandchildren. Similar meetings are being held all over the country, where supporting groups have been established. The Law in Perspective. If it so happens that this case is taken to the Constitutional Court. Chapter 11, Principles of State Policy. Article 95 (f) says that: The State shall actively promote and maintain the welfare of the people by adopting, inter alia, policies aimed at the following: f) ensurance that senior citizens are entitled to and do receive a regular pension adequate for the maintenance of a decent stan-
dard of living and the enjoyment of social and cultural opportunities; However, Article 101, Application of the Principles contained in this Chapter says that, the principles of state policy contained in this Chapter shall not of and by themselves be legally enforceable by any Court, but shall nevertheless guide the Government in making and applying laws to give effect to the fundamental objectives of the said principles. The Courts are entitled to have regard to the said principles in interpreting any laws based on them. In simple terms these Article 95 rights cannot be enforced in a court of law by themselves. With this said, there are two ways these rights could be enforced - directly or indirectly. Directly, Article 144, under international Law, which says that, unless otherwise provided by this Constitution or Act of Parliament, the general rules of public international law and international agreements binding upon Namibia under this Constitution shall form part of the law of Namibia.
So if there is a convention or treaty that Namibia is a party to, that clearly stipulates the pensioners should receive an adequate amount of money, to live adequately, the law can be enforeced directly through the means of Artcicle 144. Indirectly, this means, using Chapter 3 rights, these are the fundamental human rights and freedoms, and link them to the Chapter 11 rights, which are the Social and Ecoomic Rights. By giving the prensioners, only a measly N$600 to live from, is an infirgemnet on their righ to life, as many of them go days without food, and eventualy die from startvation. Another scenario, if anyone gets sick, they receive prescription pills with the advice that they should eat some-thing before they take the pills. Now if you drink pills on an empt stomach, this can also lead to serious circumstanes. Thus article 6, Protection of Life, says the right to life shall be respected and protected. Many pensioners have to depend on other people to provide them with food and
shelter, and many of them gets chased away like dogs. They have to swerve around, looking for a place to stay, something to eat, and this is an infringement on their dignity, as a person. This is cruel and degrading treatment. Article 8, respect for Human Dignity says that: (1)The dignity of all persons shall be inviolable. (2)(a) In any judicial proceedings or in other proceedings before any organ of the State, and during the enforcement of a penalty, respect for human dignity shall be guaranteed. (b) No persons shall be subject to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment. The pensioners are being discriminated against on the ground of age and their social and economic status. Article 10, Equality and Freedom from Discrimination says that: (1) All persons shall be equal before the law. (2) No persons may be discriminated against on the grounds of sex, race, color, ethnic origin, religion, creed or social or economic status.
Areva remains “cautiously optimistic” Marshallino Beukes
In the light of the much welcomed rise in the uranium price, namib times inquired on the current situation at Areva's Trekkopje Uranium Mine and their response was that they remain cautiously optimistic, given that mining economics is cyclic in nature. Arevas' head office further remarked that they continue to watch the market closely, and while doing so, also continually spending further huge amounts of money on test works in order to better understand the Trekkopje ore-body. Their decision for now is that they will continue their maintenance and care program, “in other words
we will cross the bridge when we get there,” the statement reads. According to the company's response via email, Areva is determined to continue developing its activities in Namibia, and it will regularly reassess the economic drivers of the project (uranium prices, capital cost, and operating cost) so that exploitation of
the deposit may start again as soon as a favourable uranium price permits. Regarding the sale of their desalination plant (approximately 30km north of Swakopmund at Wlotzkasbaken) to Namwater, the newspaper was informed that talks between Areva and the Namibian Government are well underway. “We are still convinced that
it is in the best interested of the country and its people to have the Government acquire a stake in the plant”.
Trekkopje Uranium Mine is located roughly 65km north-east of Swakopmund.

Tubusis headman survives attempted murder
The Namibian Police (NamPol) in the Erongo Region are investigating a case of attempted murder after an attack on the headman of the Tubusis village, Walter Khuwiseb. NamPol’s Erongo Regional Commander, Commissioner Samuel //Hoebeb confirmed the incident at a media briefing in Karibib on Wednesday. The 63-year-old Khuwiseb was allegedly assaulted and robbed of his Toyota Avensis sedan, a hunting rifle and N$700 cash at Tubusis on Saturday at about 02:00. He was allegedly forced to hide in the bushes to avoid being run over by some suspects with his own vehicle. The Tubusis village is located some 50 kilometres north of Karibib near the Erongo mountains. According to the police, the suspects approached the headman at his house on Friday evening, and requested overnight accommodation, which was granted to them. On Saturday morning, one of the suspects allegedly stole a jacket
from an employee of the headman, whereafter the three suspects fled. Khuwiseb and his employee then jumped into a car and followed them. They found them travelling on a donkey-cart a few kilometres away from the house. A confrontation erupted between Khuwiseb and the suspects, where he was allegedly assaulted. One of the suspects allegedly attempted to run him over with his own car. The suspects then took off with the car, rifle and the N$700. The suspects, who were arrested and charged with attempted murder and robbery with aggra-
vating circumstances are Melar Ariseb, 33; Boetie Gawanab, 35; and female suspect Magdalena Naobes, 32. “The trio were arrested in Okahandja on Sunday, where they were found in possession of the victim’s car and the rifle. The cash was not recovered,” said //Hoebeb. They already appeared in the Usakos Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday this week, where they were remanded in custody for further police investigations, and for them to apply for legal representation. The matter will be heard in the same court on 18 March 2015 again. NAMPA

Bird Count results are of international importance BernabĂŠ Blaauw
The 2015 Summer Bird Count which took place in the Walvis Bay Ramsar site this past Saturday and Sunday, organised by the Coastal Environmental Trust of Namibia (CETN) for many years, is not only important for Namibia but is part of a far bigger picture. are sent to Wetlands International. This organisation collects counts from other African countries and thus sees the bigger picture. They analyse the figures and see trends and move-ments of birds and produce scientific publications. They can warn of population declines and make participating countries aware of danger signs. On Saturday, 70 volunteers, in eight teams, each led by an experienced birder, set off to
the various count areas around the lagoon and into the salt works. Thirty volunteers were ferried from the Walvis Bay Waterfront to opposite the Angling Club. These three groups counted the thousands of birds on the mudflats. The counts are done at low tide, as the exposed mudflats attract the birds. Other teams walked or drove along the lagoon edge, using binoculars and telescopes to distinguish the various species.
Photos by BernabĂŠ Blaauw
The count figures are sent to the Ministry of Environment and Tourism (MET), as are the other counts done by the Namibia Bird Club at inland dams and other water impoundments. Holger Kolberg from MET and volunteers count at Sandwich Harbour and Orange River Mouth, both Ramsar sites. Cape Cross, Swakopmund, sites in Kavango and Caprivi and other dams and vleis are also counted. All these figures
Mr Peter Bridgeford of CETN said that the bright sun is a disadvantage at times, as counting into the sun is difficult, but counters with their backs to the sun have a very clear image of the birds. As some birds are too far to identify, the numbers are estimated and recorded as unidentified species. Similarly, dense concentrations of flamingos are estimated. The count is not an absolute figure of birds in the Ramsar site, but a good estimate of the total numbers. These counts, done since 1983, can be compared, as the same biases are present every year. The teams also stay in contact by radios, so that move-
ments of large numbers of birds are brought to the attention of other groups. On Sunday, 59 volunteers, in 6 teams, scoured the area south of the Paaltjies road and also Pelican Point. One group went to the Bird Paradise, to see what they could find in the sewage ponds. By 13:00, all but one team had completed their count. Unfortunately the final figures were not available at the time of going to print, but the full count can be obtained from Peter Bridgeford at pmbridge@iway.na A total of 148 475 birds were recorded. Flamingos, the most visible and well known of the birds, always attract a lot of attention and many tou-
rists come to Walvis Bay to see them. The flamingo numbers are up, probably as most birds are on the coast, with a total of 85 584. This is the highest number for the past five years. This year, Etosha Pan and Sua Pan in Botswana have had no water, so flamingos have not left to breed. Because of the 29 025 unidentified flamingos, the numbers of identified ones are not too high. Greater Flamingo 36 367 and Lesser Flamingos 20 192. Because of dense concentrations of these birds, the light and shimmering heat haze, the species could not be separated. Some wader species showed increased figures, such as Curlew Sandpipers, with a total of 44 270. The nearest count was in January 2012, when over 31 000 were recorded. Pelican numbers are down from a high of 1 281 in February 2014 to 500 this count. Terns can push up
the totals by thousands of birds, as in January 2008 when over 41 000 were observed. This count had just over 10 000. However, the count at Sandwich Harbour on Sunday, recorded a huge flock, estimated at about 50 000 birds. The huge flocks of ducks, the Cape Teal, were also not seen and only 5 055 were recorded. In February 2013, 11 562 were recorded. Another conspicuously absent species, were the Black-necked Grebes, with only 373 this count against 16 494 in July 2013 and 23 853 in July 2008. Curlew Sandpipers, our most common wader, totalled 31 094, very close to the January 2012 figures. Rare, vagrant species included 4 Eurasian Oystercatchers, one Redshank, one Terek Sandpiper and a Pacific Golden Plover. The winter count will take place in July this year.

Obtaining Fishing
Permits
Obtain a permit from the Namibian Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources (MFMR) to catch fish or dive for crayfish and respect harvesting limitations. WHY? The marine resources are limited and currently some of them are overfished or over collected. It is necessary that everybody uses them wisely and carefully to secure the future harvesting needs by protecting the stock. Quantity/number of marine resources harvestable, minimum size limits of fish and crayfish that can be caught, open season etc. help to manage stocks to avoid the total disappearance of some species in our waters. Do not leave bait or fish on the beach! Either take it home or return it to the sea. This food attracts scavengers like jackals and gulls that prey on other bio-diversity. When you are back home after the holiday, it also inflates the predator population. Where can you get a license for angling, crayfish diving & bait/mussels collection?

Stock price tumbles after New Zealand’s EPA refuses marine consent to Chatham Rock Phosphate When the NZ stock exchange opened yesterday morning the share price was 20c. On news that the DMC of the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has refused an application by Chatham Rock Phosphate Limited (CRP) for a marine consent to mine phosphorite nodules on the Chatham Rise, it dropped to 3c. At close of the business yesterday it was “trading” at 1c. The decision was made by a Decision-making Committee (DMC) appointed by the EPA Board and was released this week. The complete decision of more than 300 pages can be accessed with this web link: http://www.epa.govt. nz/eez/EEZ000006/ EEZ000006_CRP%20 Final%20Version%20 of%20Decision.pdf This is a profound decision. It is of monumental importance. The DMC hammered home vital truths. It made incisive observations and pronouncements. The significance of this decision will not be realised immediately. Once it has been carefully read and digested, especially by those who still want to continue venturing into this unknown activity, all concerned will be struck by the thoroughness of this comprehensive analysis of all the issues at hand. Its impact will be felt far beyond New Zealand. For all involved with this issue it will give much food for thought. In Namibia decision makers will now face the inevitable fact clearly illustrated by the conclusion of the DMC that phosphate mining “would cause significant and permanent adverse effects on the existing benthic environment” and its “rare and vulnerable ecosystems.” One crucial point in the
decision that is of the utmost importance to Namibians and which they and all decision makers especially must note and recognise. It is the DMC’s conclusion that the project was “…unlikely to generate more than a modest economic benefit to New Zealand and that the quantum and distribution of that benefit were uncertain. As against this, there would be significant and permanent adverse effects to the benthic environment and other potential environmental adverse effects. The DMC finds the economic benefits of the proposal to New Zealand to be insubstantial relative to potential adverse environmental effects of the proposal.” Despite CRP’s efforts to research and substantiate its case, the DMC was left with a lack of certainty about the receiving environment and the adverse effects of the proposal on the environment and existing interests. In these circumstances the DMC was required by the legislation to “favour caution and environmental protection” when making its decision. The decision makers do shy away from criticising CRP, its approach, its documentation and its scientific presentations. The DMC does not mince its words when it highlights in many paragraphs the “uncertainty
and inadequacy” of information made available. At one point in the decision that information was described as “manifestly incomplete.” Some of the following pertinent quotes from the decision will give some indication of the devastating indictment the DMC has levelled against CRP: Scientific knowledge of the ecosystem is manifestly incomplete and the DMC does need to have sufficient, and sufficiently certain, information to identify and evaluate the risks involved in a proposal such as this. There was a large measure of agreement among experts in a range of fields that more, and more certain, information was needed on which to base assessments of the impact of the proposal on the environment and existing interests, which the DMC found persuasive. The DMC concludes that there would be significant and permanent adverse effects on the existing ben-
thic environment. The mining would result in a long term change in habitat from a mixed phosphorite nodule/sediment habitat to a graded soft sediment habitat. The DMC is convinced that the proposal would create significant and permanent adverse effects on the environment which are incapable of being avoided, remedied or mitigated, and that this aspect of sustainable management is of paramount concern in this instance. After weighing all the material before it, taking into account the matters listed in the relevant legislation and applying the information principles, the DMC concluded that the application “could not be approved either in part or in whole and therefore the application was refused.” There is a 15-working day period for CRP to lodge any appeals to the New Zealand High Court which can be made only on points of law. It is no wonder that follow-

ing the news of the refusal the share price of CRP crashed on the New Zealand stock exchange from 20c to 3c. With this refusal the claim by CRP that it was “assisting” Namibia (see Swakopmund Matters 2 - 2015 of 9 February 2015) can be placed in proper perspective. A class act of opportunism to offer its assistance to another country while its reputation and what it stands for are in tatters. With the baggage CRP now carries all in Namibia will be even more apprehensive about its involvement in Namibia and its intentions. CRP must thus rest assured that there will be no scope for it in Namibia to try and recover lost ground. Nepolo receives sewing machine Mavourlene Gaes
Talented 19 year old Nepolo Silvanus’s plea in a previous article was heard when he received a brand new sewing machine over the weekend. Nepolo received his sewing machine on Saturday after Aunty Bokkie read the article and decided to grant him his wish. According to Aunty Bokkie, she was sitting at home reading the newspaper when she came across his article
and was touched by his plea for a sewing machine. After the article in the paper she contacted Taati Niilenge who has been a great help for Nepolo. “I phoned and Taati told me he was still in school but, that she was
going to contact me as soon as he returned from school,” Aunty Bokkie explains. When Nepolo returned from school she informed Aunty Bokkie and they agreed to meet in Swakopmund where he chose a machine of his choice and thanked her for her amazing good deed. The grade 12 learner at the Kuisebmond Secondary school is a gifted fashion designer who not only de-
signs but does his own sewing too. Although Nepolo admitted he had no knowledge of his capabilities, until his distressed friend put him in a tight spot, says he loves fashion and decorating women. Nepolo is said to have been not only touched by Aunty Bokkie’s wise words but, astonished that someone who did not know him would give him such a wonderful gift.

NAMPOWER Donates N$80 000 for Tauma Healing Network
The Nampower Foundation decided to give N$80 000 towards the Trauma Healing Network, a project of the Bible Society of Namibia, as part of their corporate social responsibility. The money is to be applied to the training of facilitators and care-givers of the Trauma Healing Network. The Trauma Healing Network was launched in September 2012 as a Bible-engagement community project of the Bible Society of Namibia. The focus is on traumatised people with the aim to bring healing and to prepare them for dealing with trauma that might touch their lives in future. Although the Bible plays a huge role in this process, all people with trauma may benefit through it. The emotional pain that people in Namibian communities are suffering from are increasing and therefore the need for trauma healing being available to these people are also growing. Research has found that adults and children are in general not well equipped to effectively deal with traumatic experiences. As a result the effects of trauma influences their dai-

ly lives at home, work, school and especially with friends. There are many factors that play a role, but often it is the lack of equipping that leads to negative coping methods for handling emotional pain. Most important to this project is to cultivate a community which is not only able to handle their own trauma effectively, but which can also form a mutual support base. This generous donation will assist the Bible Society in training facilitators and care-givers for the Trauma Healing Network across Namibia. These trained facilita-
tors and care-givers will work at grass roots level to help people in various communities obtain the help they need to cope with unresolved trauma. People who have gone through our Trauma Healing program become more productive in the workplace, their homes, schools and communities. The project currently has facilitators and caregivers in Swakopmund, Ongwediva, Outjo, Otavi and Windhoek. Patrick “P-Flat” Thaniseb has produced for many artists at the coast and owns his own recording studio Desert Tunes, a music production that is based in Walvis Bay. Patrick was born in the harbour town and attended his educational career at several schools until he finally completed high school in Khorixas. After he completed school, he went straight into doing music. “Samuel Habasen taught me how to play the keyboard and it triggered my interest so much that I started playing in a band” Patrick explains.
He started playing in a band called “Golden Sounds” and later moved to another band named “Rast Cool”. Even though he played in a band Patrick felt it just was not enough and started experimenting with beats and went on to create a “Langarm” CD which he used to test his gift in 2006. In 2009 he started producing tracks for his first Ma/gaisa artists !Nuburob and Lettie
and since then Patrick has worked with many local artists from different music genres. He currently has three artists namely Bulan, Lorenda and Tukuros who are signed under his record label. Patrick prefers to stick to producing and recording and says he is not really into singing but that his passion is instrumental. “The music I produce gets airplay and

The Economic Development Officer, Mrs Rauna Shipunda, Mr Khan Yarar, Peace Corps volunteer, the Namibian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI) Swakopmund branch and invited stakeholders from the Ministry of Trade and Industry conducted Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) training on Strategic Business Planning and Business Registration to all registered SMEs.

Mayor of Swakopmund, Juuso Kambueshe addressing the participants at the training.
the Swakopmund Local Authority has been trying strategically to help boost the SMEs. He also said at the end of the training all participants will be provided with a strategic program which outlines all the SMEs important training dates. In his opening remarks, “I advise you all to acMayor of Swakopmund quaint yourselves to the Juuso Kambueshe said policies and to read as
much as you can,” said Mr Kambueshe. This was one of the training initiatives that the Municipality in collaboration with NCCI Swakopmund decided to embark upon for the purposes of SME development. The training focused on mission and vision statements, strategic construction, and goal-setting and action plan creation.
According to Mrs Shipunda, the organising committee of the training wanted to show SMEs in attendance the importance of taking their mission and vision and turning it into a smart, actionable plan. Mrs Shipunda also assured that there are other training programmes lined up for the whole year for the SMEs.
The Swakopmund cultural group sub-commando no: 1 under the leadership of General Oberst Mr Samuel Kavaa and Mr Alexander Jaepa decided to help the city with cleaning services and the group will be offering their experience in these services from now on. According to the branch chairman Mr Daniel Pavaza, this group believes in a clean city, indispensable to a healthy community, and that a healthy environment is necessary for a prosperous society. The group has also volunteered to take part in the Swakopmund Municipality cleaning programs. “We are confident and have strong ability to assist the city cleaning cam-
paigns,” said Mr Pavaza. They had to clean the area between Nonidas and the Roadblock. The group, consisting of men, women and children gathered at the rest area nearby Nonidas recently. According to the group members, cleaning the town of Swakopmund is one of the best things the community can do to strive towards a clean town.
“It is fun and allows people to come together, as we do not visit each other in our town, and we even get to know each other better, it was really fun and at the end of the day we didn’t want to leave,” said Amalia Mbari. According to the group, the only challenge they faced was the strong wind which made it very difficult to chase after the plastic bags.

New Triumph Tiger roars off-road * IOL Motoring
Cape Town – Triumph has made so many improvements on its 2015 Tiger 800 models that it has inadvertently created a problem for the South African distributors. While Hinkley insists that the XCx we were shown at the Cape Town launch last week and its sister model the XRx are upgrades of the original Tiger 800 XC we reviewed back in February, Natis says it’s a whole new model and needs to be homologated as such which is why the launch bikes weren’t even officially in the country yet and we’re going to have to wait a few weeks to ride one. So what makes the new Tiger 800 so different? Other than a revised valvetrain to make it run quieter, shift mechanism borrowed from the iconic 675 supersports machine for sweeter gearshifts, standard-issue ABS across the range and a new radiator shroud that channels hot air away from the rider (this after some Belgian riders had apparently complained about “getting their eggs fried”). One big thing: A ride-bywire throttle. As on the bigger Tiger 1200 Explorer, there’s no direct connection between twistgrip and throttle body; you decide how much roar you want from your Tiger, and the bike’s ECU decides how best to
deliver it. Slightly big-brotherish though that may sound, it allows the ECU to run the bike at its most efficient settings all the time, no matter how ham-fisted the rider, and reduces fuel-consumption by a claimed 17 percent, so that Hinckley can boast of extending the new Tiger’s tank range by about 80km without the cost and weight penalty of fitting a bigger fuel-tank. It’s still 19 litres, a bit small by the standards of the class, but Triumph says a gentle rider can get more than 400km between fuel stops. We’ll reserve judgment until we’ve ridden one that far. FACTS Triumph Tiger 800 XRx (XCx) Engine: 800cc liquidcooled transverse three. Bore x stroke: 74.05 x 61.94mm. Valvegear: DOHC with four overhead valves per cylinder. Power: 70kW at 9250rpm. Clutch: Cable-operated multiplate wet clutch. Transmission: Sixspeed constant-mesh gearbox with final drive by chain. Front Suspension: 43mm Showa inverted cartridge forks (43mm WP inverted cartridge forks adjustable for compression and rebound damping). Rear Suspension: Showa monoshock with hydraulically adjustable preload (WP monoshock with remote oil reservoir, hydraulically adjustable preload, rebound damping adjustment). Front brakes: Dual 308mm discs with Nissin dual-piston floating callipers and switchable ABS. Rear brake: 255mm disc with Nissin singlepiston floating calliper and switchable ABS. According to a statement by the club, this would not have been possible without the positive attitude of the guys that were at the field, even before Mr Booysen came into the
picture. An opportunity was seen with these guys and a decision was taken to get Swakopmund Rugby Club going again. SRC was able to obtain the B field at the Swakopmund Football Club sporting grounds. This field will now be extended in order for the rugby club to use. Until then, the SFC has granted them permission to use the A field for their first few matches in March. outside help in the form of sponsors, as this is a new re-established rugby club in Swakopmund and has to start from scratch. Their mission is to make this club one of the best along the coast and a force to be reckoned with. The Swakopmund Rugby Club is also in the process of organising an SA Legends weekend in Swakopmund from 26-28 February, in order to raise awareness of their comeback on the rugby scene and also to rebuild their support group as well as obtaining funds for rugby equipment and the club.
They have received confirmation that South African rugby legends, Percy Montgomery, Ian Macintosh, Peter Muller and Dale Sandton will attend the SA Legends weekend. The SA Legends will bring along their own camera crew from South Africa to record this event which will be televised on Super Sport later this year. Tickets will be sold for N$300.00 per person and this will cover the whole weekend, but excludes the 26th of February, which is reserved for senior citizens.

Green Keepers Revenge- Karin Smidt
Saturday 7 February Karin Smidt sponsored for the first time. As she is our green keeper she introduced something totally different and with lots of fun. The 37 players that entered had to face “different” greens to play to from the usual and some holes had two flags to play to, earning more points if they chose the more difficult pin placing. Fransie Grobler returned from a long rest in Cape Town and immediately was back in the prizes with a second place. Our new golf nut, Diffie de Witt outplayed everyone with the changes made to the course and won by three points. Well done! All that practice eventually paid off. Two clubs were scored by Diffie de Witt, Peet Botha and M Nangelo: 1st Diffie de Witt 48, 2nd Frans Grobler 45, 3rd Patric
Shigwele 44c/o, 4th Herman Smidt 44 c/o and 5th Johnny Truter 44c/o. Thank you Karin for all your efforts and challenges you have on course. We do not sometimes know what you have to face to keep the course in such a beautiful state. Some members do not know what it takes, but we appreciate everything you do. Thank you for cleaning up after we made a mess, repair our divots, repair
our pith marks and rake the bunkers. Thank you for making new T-Boxes, planting trees, taking away excess sand and in general improve our course. See you again next year! Subs: Still a few guilty parties that play regularly and have not paid. Sorry boys and girls, we cannot accommodate your promises any more. You have been removed from the system. Corne Schalkwyk will make a
last effort for the last few guys, but then it is it. You have been enjoying the benefit and did not pay and that is not fair towards the rest of the loyal members. Those that made arrangements to pay monthly, no problem. Construction work is entering the club at this stage. Our apologies for all the dust, but we will try to keep tidy as far as we can. The wind is not helping as we still have a roof made out of the stars.
Bear with us, we have to struggle a bit to make things better. Saturday Entries: Please do not write in the competition book! Please please. The person on duty or the person behind the bar have to balance with the cash registers. If you start to write in the book, you mess up our admin. Pay as soon as you can, do not wait until you have to T-off and then want to pay, order drinks and rush
everything. If possible enter timeously for you Saturday round. We have to plan and prepare food. It happened that on the Friday afternoon we only had 11 entries. We prepared food for 11 and on Saturday we had 35 players. It will help a lot with the catering. This Saturday the first PISCS Medal of the year is back. Keep in mind that medals earn you double points for the Travel Ma-
gic Race to Cape Town. This year Travel Magic is once again standing in with two return air tickets from Walvis Bay to Cape Town. Frans and Justine Grobler just returned from their trip to Cape Town last week, Frans being the winner last year. If you have problems with the calendar, please refer all queries to Herman Smidt and Shane Westerdale. Ice Cold Hansa Draught on Tap as from today!
