39 Shacks burn to ashes in 3 days Affordable housing backlog blamed… Marshallino Beukes More than 100 people are left homeless after another 20 backyard shacks were destroyed in a fire on Tuesday night in Walvis Bay’s Kuisebmond residential area. Coastal residents are pinpointing the lack of affordable housing in the region as the reason for the fires. The government and local authorities are made out as the main culprits in this status quo. This tragedy follows only two days after one person’s life was claimed by a similar scenario, also in Kuisebmond, on Sunday. In this instance a total
of 18 shacks were burnt down to ashes, with three houses also damaged in the inferno. Local residents are crying out for better living conditions and affordable housing for years, but this seems to be in vain, as no drastic measures are taken to Continues on page 2

Inspection costs go up
Around 600 Chinese Navy officers and crew members of the 16th Chinese Navy Escort Fleet docked at the Port of Walvis Bay on Wednesday. The officers were welcomed by the Chinese Ambassador Xin Shungkang and members of the Namibian Navy and Defence Forces. More than 500 Chinese nationals and Namibians, who included school children, gave the officers a rousing welcome waving flags of the two countries as the CNS Yancheng, Luoyang and Tai Hu docked. In a welcome speech,
Ambassador Shungkang said the historic visit bears testimony of the new China-Africa strategic partnership. “Namibia is one of the youngest countries in Southern Africa. Since the diplomatic ties were set up on the following day after Namibia gained independence, China and Namibia have maintained vigorous exchanges and cooperation in high level politics, culture, economy and trade. Stop Electric officially opened Mavourlene Gaes
The décor shop Stop Electric Domestic opened their doors to the public yesterday afternoon and promises their customers nothing but the best.
Alex Silheu, who honoured his father's work by speaking on his behalf, had nothing but good things to say to how much hard work went in to getting the shop to where it is today. Thinking back on how hard his father, Tony worked to be where he is, Alex said it took a lot of determination, “Sometimes he worked over weekends and public holidays, most nights to the early hours of the morning as he became more and more in demand.” According to Alex, Stop

It fully reflects the vitality of the All-weather friendship between our two countries. And I believe through the joint military exercise, mutual studies and the football game, the two navies will further deepen their friendship and promote their cooperation to an even higher level,” the Ambassador said. The fleet successfully accomplished rescue missions in the Gulf of Aden, and off the coast of Somalia which contributed to world peace and stability. The fleet also travelled to six African countries including Tunisia, Senegal and Nigeria. The 16th Chinese Navy Escort Fleet carried out
escort missions from 30 November 2013 to 24 April 2014 in the Gulf of Aden and off the coast of Somalia. Ambassador Shungkang said the army cooperation between Namibia and China is healthy and the visit by the navy ships cements the cooperation. He said cooperation in the political and economic sectors are also strengthening as signified by Prime Minister Hage Geingob’s visit to China in April. He noted that it is gratifying that many Chinese companies and entrepreneurs come to Namibia and the uranium Husab Mine is one such good investment to be applauded.

get this situation under control. Tuesday night’s inferno erupted in Khomas Hochland and Tormalyn streets and four houses were also damaged. Fortunately no injuries were reported in this instance. In Swakopmund, one shack and another unit, which was used as a garage and storage room, were also demolished by fire, early Tuesday morn-
ing. Statistics provided by Chief Adri Goosen of the Swakopmund Fire Brigade indicate that this institution was called out to 40 informal dwelling fires since January this year. Last year the number was considerably lower, with only 15 callouts to shack fires for the same time period. No casualties were experienced during the first
half of 2013, with one reported during April this year. However, the statistics for Walvis Bay shows a shocking increase. Deputy Fire Chief Dennis Basson indicated that from January this year up to now an astonishing number of 77 shacks burnt down compared to 23 last year and the highest figure recorded in 2009, namely 27.
Both the Swakopmund and Walvis Bay Fire Brigades have it in common, explaining that overloading of electricity sources, causing short-circuits, is the main cause of these fires. Negligence also seems to be one of the main causes. Some shack dwellers were spoken to and the million dollar question was, “we do not prefer to live in shacks, but where
else should we stay on the money we earn?” One of the shack dwellers, Mr Desmond Robinson’s comment was that people should be very careful of overloading electricity sockets and this actually is the home owners’ responsibility. He further asked where the shack dwellers are supposed to go, if backyard shacks should be banned.
One shack dweller laughed out loudly, when asked about the Mass Housing Scheme, claiming it’s the biggest joke ever. Whatever the case may be, this is a very serious matter, which acquires immediate and drastic action from authorities. People’s lives are at stake and a definite solution must be reached as in immediately.
40 shacks and 4 houses burned down in Walvis Bay’s Kuisebmond area, leaving close to a hundred families homeless and out in the cold.

Drunken driving causes accident Piquet Jacobs
A Narraville resident caused a double collision, when he was speeding around the corner of Kruis and Pelican Street in Narraville and crashed into a bakkie and sedan car on Monday night. The driver of a white Renault Laguna (N18681W) was reportedly heavily intoxicated and after quite a bit of fast and reckless driving, he crashed into a white Nissan bakkie (N20409WB) which belongs to West to East Coast Investments. The impact of the collision then caused the bakkie to crash into a blue Volkswagon Golf FSi (N1075WB). Witnesses at the scene claimed that the incident happened very quickly and before police officials could arrive at the scene, the driver of the Renault apparently fled the scene and tried hiding in one of the nearby flats. A resident of the street followed him to his hiding place and brought him back to the scene, where police officials arrested him. He was still in custody on Tuesday morning and will possibly be charged with driving under the influence, fleeing the scene of an accident and reckless driving.
Hijacked Piquet Jacobs
A young man was hijacked on Tuesday night, after giving a lift to two men from Walvis Bay going to Swakopmund. Sema Shishiveni (28) was robbed of his personal belongings and vehicle Toyota RunX registration number (N3047S) around 21:30. The thieves also stole Shishiveni’s personal documents, company documents, vehicle documents, his cellphone and N$2 000 cash which was in the cubbyhole. He picked up two men at the taxi rank in Kuisebmond, where the men were looking for transport to take them to Swakopmund. The two men paid Shishiveni N$80 for the trip. According to Shishiveni, they were cheerful and they talked to Shishiveni all the way. When they reached Swakopmund, Shishiveni asked them to direct him to the area where they lived. And they told him they stay in the DRC location. When they reached the location they continued directing him, until the man sitting in front or-
dered him to stop. The man seated in the back immediately grabbed Shishiveni around the neck and the front passenger took out a large knife and pressed it against Shishiveni’s wrist. They demanded him to surrender all his money and belongings, and he told them that he had no money on him. The criminals demanded the car keys and after handing over the keys Shishiveni managed to escape from the robbers while the duo sped off with the car. When Shishiveni screamed for help an elderly man in a nearby shack came out and helped him contact the police. Shishiveni reported the hijack at the police station and a case was opened with case number CR 16-062014. Anyone with information about the car or the two men, can contact the Mondesa Police Station or Shishiveni at 0816143995.

Stolen dogs sold on the streets Madelaine Laubscher
The Tierschutzverein Swakopmund SPCA recently requested pet owners to keep their pets safe and secure, following the theft of two dogs. A spokesperson of the Swakopmund SPCA recently reported on a social network that two incidents of dog thefts have been reported and that the criminals attempted to sell them. A member of the public was leaving a shop when a man came forward with a puppy and told her he wanted only N$50 for it. She took the puppy that the seller put in her arms but immediately went to report the incident to the SPCA. A spokesperson of the SPCA told the namib times that the buyer became suspicious when she saw that the dog was a purebred Chihuahua and that it was not the type of dog one could find for sale on the street.
“She confiscated the dog and brought it to us. We immediately recognised the dog since she is well known to us and the puppy was returned to the owner,” she said. In another incident, another member of the public confiscated a puppy which was offered for sale and she is taking care of the dog until the rightful owner is located. She said the SPCA often receives calls from the public about dogs and puppies being offered for sale in the vicinity of Pick n Pay in Swakopmund and the surrounding area. “We try to respond immediately, but often the culprits are usually already gone when we arrive there or they recog-
nise our vehicle and run away,” she said. Coastal residents are urged to lock their gates or to keep their dogs inside the house when they are not at home and to become familiar with their neighbours and their pets. The spokesperson said it seems that smaller dogs and puppies are the main targets lately and every pet owner is advised to keep their dogs on leashes when taking them for walks and to report suspicious persons in the area or in the neighbourhood. “When your pet goes missing, please contact the SPCA immediately. Give us a detailed description of your pet as well as all necessary information. Always keep
One of the recovered dogs recent photos of your pets just in case it goes missing. Put collars on your dogs with tags containing your details or have them micro-chipped. Photos can be sent to us via Whatsapp to 081 799 4655 or email us at

Die Here is my antwoord”.
Rus sag, my geliefde broer…”.

BAN advises on ID needed for deposits
Ian Leyenaar, chairman of the Bankers Association of Namibia and chief executive officer of FNB Namibia has advised that as from 1 July 2014, identification will be needed by customers for all deposits done within any bank.
Ian Leyenaar
He said: “This is a regulatory requirement as part of the Know your customer (KYC) campaign and national identity documentation is required for all deposits. This means either a valid ID or passport is needed. This initiative will be supported by a marketing campaign to ensure that all customers are aware of that before the deadline of 1 July 2014.” He added: It would be good to a start bringing your ID or passport now in order to get used to this before it becomes a must within a month.”
Namibian publisher at SA Book Fair
Wordweaver Publishing House, Namibia's dedicated fiction publisher, has received a grant from the Goethe-Institut in South Africa to attend the South African Book Fair. The book fair will take place from 13-16 June at the CTICC in the centre of Cape Town. Wordweaver Publishing, established in 2012, has pub-lished 18 titles of local literature and is proud to be representing Namibia down south. “It's an amazing opportunity to meet other publishers, and to promote our books,” says Bryony van der Merwe, founder of Wordweaver Publishing. The grant also includes a workshop on E-publishing, which Bryony will
attend on 12 June. This is the second grant that Wordweaver Publishing has received. Last year the company went to Lagos, Nigeria, to attend a similar function. Wordweaver has recently secured a South African marketing and distribution agent to promote their books, and feels that the exposure gained at the book fair will only enhance this partnership. Obtaining Fishing
Permits
Obtain a permit from the Namibian Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources (MFMR) to catch fish or dive for crayfish and respect harvesting limitations. WHY? The marine resources are limited and currently some of them are overfished or over collected. It is necessary that everybody uses them wisely and carefully to secure the future harvesting needs by protecting the stock. Quantity/number of marine resources harvestable, minimum size limits of fish and crayfish that can be caught, open season etc. help to manage stocks to avoid the total disappearance of some species in our waters. Do not leave bait or fish on the beach! Either take it home or return it to the sea. This food attracts scavengers like jackals and gulls that prey on other bio-diversity. When you are back home after the holiday, it also inflates the predator population. Where can you get a license for angling, crayfish diving & bait/mussels collection?

Walvis Bay Lions Club The District Governor of Region 410 A, Lion James Stigant and his wife Lion Rheta visited Walvis Bay Lions Club recently and addressed delegates about the role of Lions and the Lions Clubs International Foundation.
He said, Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) supports and develops international humanitarian programs that serve people in need. Safe blood for saving mothers Madelaine Laubscher
The world celebrates World Blood Donors Day (WBDD) every year on 14 June to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products and to thank blood donors for their voluntary life-saving donations. A spokesperson at the Blood Transfusion Services of Namibia (NamBTS) said the organisation welcomes donors with the O+ blood group which can be given to most patients in need of blood and the O- is usually given to babies needing blood. “There will be a clinic to donate blood in Swakopmund on Thursday at Shoprite from 10:00 to 15:00 and in Windhoek on Saturday at the Maerua Mall from 09:00 to 14:30. We will focus on helping mothers specifically, as the theme for 2014 is Safe blood for saving mothers,” she said. According to this spokesperson, almost 780 women die daily due to birth complications and pregnancy and more than half of these deaths occur in Africa. Aggressive bleeding can be a cause to these deaths. Of all the blood given to patients, they give about 20% to women alone. NamBTS wants to thank those who frequently donate blood. Almost 16 000 active donors saved almost 44 000 patients in 2013.
“On Saturday we will also hand out certificates to our milestone donors (donors who have donated for many years) and Radio Kosmos will also join in the event during the day in Windhoek,” she said. According to Wikipedia, this event was established in 2004 and it is one of eight official global public health campaigns marked by the World Health Organization (WHO). The goal is for all countries to obtain all their blood supplies from voluntary unpaid donors by 2020. This year, 60 countries have their national blood supplies based on 99 100% voluntary unpaid blood donations, with 73 countries still largely dependent on family donors and paid donors. Another goal is to increase awareness about why timely access to safe blood and blood products is essential for all countries as part of a comprehensive approach to prevent maternal deaths. Blood transfusions and blood products help to save millions of lives every year. It can help
patients suffering from life-threatening conditions to live longer with a higher quality of life and it supports complex medical and surgical procedures. Access to safe and sufficient blood and blood products can help reduce rates of death and disability due to severe bleeding during delivery and after childbirth. In many countries, there is not an adequate supply of safe blood and blood services face the challenge of making sufficient blood available, while also ensuring its quality and safety. An adequate supply can only be assured through regular donations by voluntary unpaid blood donors. Access to safe blood donations remains a challenge though in a lot of countries world wide. Those interested in donating blood should be older than 16 years, weigh more than 50kg, lead a sexually safe lifestyle and enjoy general good health. Donors are encouraged to eat a balanced meal within 3 - 4 hours of attending the clinic.

I herewith wish to bring under your attention a matter of great concern to me. I am a 60-year old lady. I went to the Natis office in Swakopmund to have a new vehicle registered on my name on Tuesday, 27 May. After I waited in the line for around 2 hours, I was eventually attended to. I presented my documentation and was then referred to Walvis Bay where I should get a Namibian Clearance Certificate. I was not informed that I should go to Customs for this specific certificate, and had to wait for 3 hours at the police station, after which they informed me to get the clearance certificate in question from Customs, which is located at the harbour. I am not from Walvis Bay, and therefore did not know where the Customs offices are located. The policeman then gave me directions how to get there and then to come back to the police station to apply for a police clearance certificate. After I got the certificate required, I went back to the Police station in Walvis Bay and applied for the Namibian Police Certificate. I was then informed to come back the next day to pick up the form. I went back the next say and after I waited for 2 hours, I was then informed that I do not need a Namibian Police Clearance Certificate, as they only sign at the back
of the SA Police clearance certificate I have and I then have to present this to Natis in Swakopmund. I then rushed back to Swakopmund and went to the Natis Office again to register my new vehicle on my name. I went and stood in the row well before opening time, being 13:30 that afternoon. A lady helped me eventually – taking my documentation and then informed me that the Superintendent should first approve this transaction, thereafter she could then register my vehicle on my name. She then informed me that the Superintendent is not in the office, as she went to town and that she does not know when she would be back. I informed her that I would wait until she is back. After I waited for 2 hours I got up and asked her if my papers were being processed, after which she informed me that the Superintendent is not back yet, and that she is on her way out to for a fisio appointment. She closed her office and just left, with around 20 people still waiting to be attended to. Although there was a second employee attending to the long waiting queue of people, it was almost impossible for him to tend to all the people. I then ran out of the office to the back to catch the lady before leaving and to ask her what about my doc-
uments and if I could maybe just get it back and then submit it at a later stage, as these are all original documents and I was scared that it would get lost. She just informed me that I should come back on Friday, as Thursday is a holiday. She then said that she would not be there on Friday and that I should enquire from the person in her place, which obviously I did not know who it would be and if he/she would have my papers. I then went to another lady/employee at the back offices and asked her if she could help me. She was extremely rude and said to me that this is not her business and she cannot help me, although she is one of the employees there. I went back to the front office, which was then locked. After I knocked a few times the security guard reluctantly let me in. I then waited another 3 hours, but with no help whatsoever. At around 17:00, Mr Uiseb, one of the employees who works at the back offices, came past. I burst into tears and asked him if he could help me. He was very kind and went out of his way to assist me. I am very greatfull to him and I wish we had more employees at Natis like him. I really think that this matter should be taken up seriously. Concerned Citizen

Monica: a published author Paulina Moses
When the namib times wrote about Monica Morocky last year, her resume bragged of newspaper columnist, managing an award-winning artist and working for the renowned Nawazone, and as if that was not enough, the dynamic woman has now added author to her titles. Yes, Monica Morocky, known to many as the girl who is constantly cracking ‘infamous’ jokes on Facebook actually wrote a book! Publishing a book was however never in her plans, “It was decided for me, and actually a handful of people that read my Facebook stories practically forced the idea into my head. I had nothing to lose so I went for it.” Monica added, “Never, and I mean like never ever did I think I would be an author one day. To me it was just fun, closing the gaps of boredom. I never imagined I will one day tell somebody with my head held up high that I am an author.” For those who follow the young lass on Facebook, the book is based on relationships in the modern era; the cheating, the lying and the now famed issue of side chicks. “It’s entitled Modern Relationships, it tells a tale of the everyday life stories of modern relationships,” Monica explained, withholding any information that might give away the content of the book. Writing a book is not an easy task. Most of us think it is incredibly hard because it is our irrational beliefs about writing that actually impede our progress more than say, an uncomprehending public, transitions in publishing, or a lack of spare time. How did the writing phase play out for Monica and did she encounter any challenges? “Hell yes I did, well firstly the time because I needed to run around for matters of the book, and still run my other projects, still needed to be a full time daughter and a full time friend.
The challenges where there indeed,” she jokingly said It took Monica less than two months to write the book, “Let’s say its round about a month and two weeks, that’s how long the process took. Back and forth with sponsors, re-editing, the graphics and all that.” To many, writing a book is perceived as the toughest phase of the project, but in actuality almost anyone can write a book, but not everyone can write a book good enough to secure a publisher. Yet, Monica said finding a publisher was a walk in the park, “I got a sponsor to pay for the printing costs and everything that had to do with my book, so the publishers simply just had to do what they got paid for and that was to print and publish my book.” Critics may be sceptical about the content of the book for teenagers but Monica says that high school learners have shown a vast interest in her book, “For high scholars yes, for younger learners I am not really sure. But the reality is that people that call me most of the time demand the book for high school learners. However, everybody can relate to this story.” Monica is currently working on a book launch and autograph signing ceremony. Hopefully she will have a launch right here at the coast because, as you should know, she was born and bred in Walvis Bay. How does she feel to be a published author? “Eish, I think it still needs to kick in because I still just feel like Monica, that ‘kagirl’ from Walvis.”

Quick Questions
The healthy life Anri Jacobs
This is what DietlindHorsthemke a Sport Science student at the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa spoke about recently and exposed the amazing career of Sport Science and the importance of living a healthy life! Sport Science offers a variety of career options once one successfully completes studies. When studying Sport Science you also have two options namely a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science in Sport Science which is what Dietlind chose to do. The undergraduate degree is basic but postgraduate options are nemerous. Sport Science ranges from biokinetics, high performance, product design and production (think sports apparel, clothes gym equipment, media production) to being an Olympic coach. You can even study Physiology, Biochemistry, Dietitian, Physiotherapy, and it depends on what a person wants to specialise in. Dietlind specialised in Fitness; Strength and conditioning. Crossfit is a component of Strength
“Making healthy lifestyle choices really is a choice, but for me it is the only one. Knowing that every cell in your body renews itself every other month and grows from what you expose it to, makes this a naturally easy choice.”
and conditioning program and one of the many ways that can be used to achieve optimal performance and fitness. Dietlind’s degree gives her the background to be a successful Crossfit coach and athlete. Dietlind shared some tips for a healthy lifestyle which she strongly believes in: “First of all we need to define what it means to be ‘healthy. I would say it means to wake up every morning and feeling like we could conquer the world and that means having the energy to pursue all our daily tasks and ambitions without any limitations. Health is also the absence of disease and the ability to move your body from A to B without difficulty. We often forget this but think of how many older people have knee, back or hip problems and are limited in their ability to move around to do the simplest of tasks around the house. Health is not only physically but also mental.” Health/ wellness can be measured by: - blood pressure - body fat - bone density - triglycerides
- blood glucose levels - Good and bad cholesterol - Flexibility - Muscle mass - and more Dietlind said. The next questions we must ask ourself is, “How do we achieve or maintain this state of health”? This can be achieved through regular exercise: being physically active can promote the above factors to reach optimal levels, i.e. fitness provides a great tool of protection against the ravages of time and disease. The fitter you are the lower your blood pressure, cholesterol and blood glucose levels. This is of significance since these factors have been positively linked to obesity, cardiovascular and heart disease, diabetes and metabolic syndrome just to mention a few. Physical activity promotes flexibility and muscular strength making you fit for daily tasks. Getting enough sleep of at least 6 - 8 hours per day is of utmost importance since it is during this time that your body recovers and renews itself so it can fully and optimally function and
it helps with memory/cognitive functioning. Consuming a balanced diet with all essential macro (carbohydrates, protein and fats) and micro nutrients (Vitamins and Minerals) and unprocessed as much as possible. Staying hydrated is also really important! Drink enough water, because all chemical
reactions in the body take place in a watery medium. Stress less: stress releases the hormone cortisol which under chronic conditions may cause muscle breakdown and fatigue. Last but not least, health instantaneously brings happiness, so be happy. A healthy mind gives you a healthy life.”

(Eingesandt von Gunter and Ester Sacha)

Ein Zweitklässler beantwortet Fragen. 1.
4. Was tut deine Mama in ihrer Freizeit? Locker vom Hocker Das Erbe Riruakos

Volkswagen's FactoryTour vehicle enhances the experience and safety Over 8 800 people have experienced a tour of Volkswagen Group South Africa's manufacturing factory in Uitenhage in comfort and style over the past year. The Volkswagen FactoryTour vehicle was launched in June 2013, allowing visitors to rest their feet, sit back and enjoy the ride whilst witnessing the intricate manufacturing process of the current best-selling passenger cars in South Africa, Polo Vivo and Polo. The FactoryTour vehicle, which was custom built by two Volkswagen Motorsport employees, has ensured a much-improved tour experience by comfortably accommodating 21 people per tour. Since June 2013, over 400 FactoryTours have exposed a variety of visitors to the factory. Visitors - which include school groups, students, foreign and local tourists - have not only enjoyed sight-seeing inside the factory, but have also expe-
rienced VWSA's popular heritage centre, the AutoPavilion. The AutoPavilion - place of cars and legends - takes visitors through a journey of Volkswagen's history in South Africa. The museum also features a collection of cars, including unique vehicles, hightech prototypes and record breaking cars. Highlights include a cutthrough Volkswagen Beetle that opens and closes, the 1954 imported Kombi of Baron Klaus von Oertzen (the father of Volkswagen South Africa), the last Volkswagen Citi Golf, the last Beetle manufactured in the Uitenhage plant, as well as 27 static and graphic displays and over 20 interactive exhibits. "The introduction of the FactoryTour vehicle has been helpful in speeding
up the factory tours especially with the senior citizens that sometimes struggle to walk around the factory," explained AutoPavilion manager Buyile Gqubule. "Another benefit is that it has also allowed us to reduce the minimum tour age to eight years due to the improved safety of being transported in the FactoryTour vehicle." The FactoryTours take place on Mondays to Thursdays at 09h00 and 12h00. On Fridays, there is only one tour at 09h00. Bookings can be made through the Volkswagen AutoPavilion on (041) 994 5941/3. The FactoryTour includes the tour of the AutoPavilion, where some of the Volkswagen South Africa classic cars are on display.

However, the SARB against expectations that their prices will fall cannot lower rates as consumer inflation is over the year as the US Federal Reserve Bank ticking upwards. Thus the best they could do (the Fed) buys less bonds. The reason for the within a weak growth / rising inflation unexpected performance may be that investors environment was to keep rates constant for now. are favouring USA bonds (where the economy is Expect a few small interest rate increases of improving, inflation is low and the Fed is exiting 0.25% at a time during the rest of the year. the bond market) relative to European bonds See Table 1 below for asset class returns over (where the European Central Bank is increasing various periods: Table 1: Asset Class Returns (in N$)
Portfolio Performances: Though markets move in random ways over shorter periods like a month, they become more predictable given enough time. Below we show the performances of cash: the steady thin red line
a proxy for cash and bonds (safety assets) and local shares: the volatile thin brown line a proxy for different types of shares (growth assets), and my six managed portfolios as graphed by MoneyMate.
Graph 1: 12 Month Returns
Since global markets reacted negatively one year ago, to the realization that the USA economy really is improving and that the Fed is therefore starting to buy less bonds because it doesn't need to suppress long-term interest rates anymore, emerging market bonds have lost their relative attractiveness. The subsequent underperformance of local bonds (and listed property) has put pressure on Conservative+ and Cautious portfolios and pensioners drawing income on them. Over the last 12 months the gross return of our Conservative+ (6.9%) and Cautious (8.7%) thus underperformed their benchmarks of 8% and
9%, respectively. However, our Cautious+ portfolio (10.1% versus 10%), Moderate (11.2% versus 11%), Moderate+ (14.0% versus 12%) and Assertive (17.8% versus 13%) are all beating their benchmarks, due to the strong performance of global and local shares. Over periods longer than one year all my portfolios beat their benchmarks by between 1% and 5% per annum. Valuations and Risks: Most, but not all commentators think share markets are overvalued, and that these aboveaverage performances cannot continue. Here are some examples:
· Analyst Garzarelli remains positive as the US market is 10% undervalued according to her calculations. There may be a small correction of about 4% to 7% coming, but she expects a strong 2014 for US shares. · The investment research house BCA forecasts the US market to continue pushing upwards on the back of accelerating economic growth and accommodating interest rate policy, and to outperform all other asset classes for this year. · Investment house GMO thinks valuations are stretched and that markets will be choppy before rallying upwards into the end of the year. Their sentiment index is at high levels but that we are not yet in bubble territory as private credit growth remains weak. · Global investment manager BlackRock values both global shares and bonds as expensive but they favour global shares given the improving US economy, continued low rates, strong company earnings and accelerating mergers and acquisitions activity. · Nedgroup Investments is neutral on the US share market but negative on the SA share market. They see valuations are expensive within deteriorating local economic conditions and rising short-term interest rates by the SARB. · A recent survey of seven SA asset management companies described the SA share market as overvalued. They expect growth in the AllShare-Index of only about 7% to 9%
over the next 12 months. · Current valuations for local cash, bonds and shares are all stretched, though global property and global shares are the cheapest while opinions differ if local listed property is expensive or cheap. From such lofty valuations investors usually earn lower returns over the medium-term than the existing historical longterm averages would predict. Conclusions: We have been cautioning our clients over the last three years that we cannot continue to generate these high aboveaverage portfolio returns. We have to ensure that our investment fundamentals (aim, term, amount, risk profile) agree with our chosen risk-rated portfolio, return expectations and / or monthly in-come requirement. If you are not sure, see a sound financial adviser to review your long-term financial plan. If you have a good adviser, assume a shared responsibility for your financial plan, and make sure you understand the advantages and disadvantages of any changes to your long-term plan. Walvis Bay golf news Sanlam - Saturday 7 June
Sanlam sponsored their annual event last Saturday and with some of our regulars not being here it gave opportunity for the rest to compete in the different divisions to play in Windhoek later in the year and eventually visit Sun City for the grand finale. Early morning the East wind was looming around the course and we had some guys that did not show up for their rounds. Chickens, you missed out on a spectacular day of golf and the wind bothered nobody. This event has been going on for years and Sanlam dug deep into the pockets to entertain golfers right around Southern Africa. Money is collected for the cancer association and our club once again did not stand back to give our support. Each player donated an additional amount towards this worthy cause and we also arranged for a quick auction. Johan van den Berg could not play on Saturday, but made the effort and also donated N$1 000. Thanks guys, you are great and we appreciate that our little community can still make a difference. The results were as follows: Men’s A Division - Rocco Viljoen 43, Kevin Wentzel 40, Francois Champion 37; Men’s B Division - Sergio Figueredo 39, Kurt Brits 38, Danie van Antwerpen 38; Men’s C Division - F Champion Snr 36, J Gomes 36, Willie Venter 36; Ladies A Division – Justine Grobler; B Division –
Estelle Bothma; C Division – Dawn Dippenaar. Thanks once again to Andre Barnard and Sanlam for sponsoring this event and we see you again next year. Donations towards the HD TV is going slow. We have N$10 000 in the bank with some guys who still have to honour their promises. If you are willing and want to watch your favourite sport in full HD, please make a contribution. We are only N$7 000 short to have a 60 inch HD TV. Wanderers Ticket available at the club. Maybe you are lucky this time round. N$ 1000.00 per ticket. Upcoming events at the club: 13 June- Nedbank Corporate. By invite only; 14 June- Chicken City sponsor- Medal Stableford; 14 June – Nostalgia. Almost no tickets left; 21 June – Namibia Ship Chandlers, format to be confirmed; 27 JuneLions Fundraiser; 28 June- Bay Wash; 30 June- Smokers Party. We have smoked fish, smoked chicken, smoked mussels and enjoy the last day of smoking in the club; 1 July- No Smoking in the club; Mid July- Night at the Races, date to be confirmed; July- Sport Quiz, date to be confirmed.
Hoop it up! Wallfox.com The Erongo basketball league kicked off with an interesting start this weekend on the Swakopmund and Kuisebmond basketball courts. Welwitschias against Province tomorrow The Namibia Rugby Union has announced a team of 24 players for their rugby match between the Windhoek Draught Weltwitschias and the DHL Western Province tomorrow, 14:00 at the Hage Geingob Stadium in Windhoek. The team is currently preparing for the tour to Madagascar for the CAR 1A tournament which serves as the final round of qualifying matches for the Rugby World Cup (RWC) 2015 in London. Jacques Burger who last played for Namibia in the RWC 2011, had to withdraw due to injury during his last matches for Saracens. The leadership of the senior players in the squad, who have been
leading the team since the last RWC in 2011, will thus be vital for success in Madagascar. These senior players have grown a lot during the past 2 years and have gelled very well with the new inclusions in the team. The match against the DHL Western Province will be a good test for coach DanieVermeulen and his troops ahead of the CAR 1A tournament. The team for the match
against the Western Province will be: 1. Johnny Redelinghuys, 2. Rathony Becker, 3. Andre Schlechter, 4. Munee Tjiuza, 5. Morne Blom, 6. Rohan Kitshoff, 7. Tinus Du Plessis, 8. PJ Van Lill (C), 9. Arthur Bouwer, 10. Theuns Kotze (V/C), 11. Johan Tromp, 12. Darryl De La Harpe, 13. Heinrich Smith, 14. Conrad Marais, 15. Chrysander Botha, 16. DG Wiese, 17. Jaco Engels, 18.
Shaun Du Preez, 19. Stefan Neustadt, 20. Awie Thompson, 21. Eneill Buitendag ,22. Johan Deysel, 23. Divan Visser, 24. Thomasua Forbes. The final squad of 26 players to represent Namibia in Madagascar will be announced next week, prior to the Welwitschias’ next match against the Vodacom Bulls next Saturday, 21 June, 16:00 at the Hage Geingob Stadium.

Mr Anthony van Wyk (left) hands over the kit to Mr Calvyn Besser, with coach Rowan Besser far right. In the background are some Dolphin players wearing the warm-up t-shirts. Marshallino Beukes Dolphins Rugby Club this week received a much appreciated sponsorship in the form of brand new rugby socks and warm-up t-shirts, courtesy of Erongo Contract Services. The chairman of the Swakopmund based Rugby Club, Mr Calvyn Besser, noted that they are in dire need of attire and therefore welcomed this generous gesture from Mr Hendrik Dawid, owner of Erongo Contract Services. Sign World did the printing on the t-shirts and the kit was officially handed over on
Tuesday night by Mr Anthony van Wyk. Besser explained that the club doesn’t have a main sponsor and rely mostly on donations from local business and small companies. The club also held fundraising events to accumulate money in order to fulfil their club and league commitments. Although the NRU assist with tra-
velling allowances it is not adequate to cover all the costs when travelling and therefore the clubs must also pay for transport and accommodation. After several unsuccessful attempts to get business on board to sponsor the club with attire, Dolphin management decided to run a raffle draw where 10 prizes are up for grabs
for only N$30.00 per ticket. The main price is an Oryx (gemsbok), 2nd and 3rd prices are meat hampers with a value of N$1 200 and N$1 000 respectively. Prices such as a goat, sheep, springbok, biltong hamper and cash prices are also in store. The Dolphin management would like to appeal to the public to
please support their efforts by buying tickets from the players and management members. The raffle draw will take place on Saturday 26 July 2014 at the Vineta North Sport Field in Swakopmund. Plans are also in place to host other activities such as a tent disco and braai during this occasion.

Rossmund golf club news
We have been enjoying some great sunny days on the course with not a lot of wind – weather great for a wintery June. Then suddenly yesterday the dreaded East wind reared its ugly, dusty head. Last Saturday the proposed ‘sponsored’ competition was postponed and instead a Club sponsored Betterball Stableford was held, for a sadly small
field. The winners were M. Pascual and B.Romero (47 pts on a c/o), 2nd F Coetzee, F Coetzee (Jnr), and T Serratosa, 3rd L Nande.
There were three x 2 clubs - T Haimbondi, H Naobeb and M Pascual. Nearest to the pin on hole 7 - J van der Merwe. Well done to the guys who supported us. The Wednesday special, sadly few members participated, and the prizes which were kindly donated by Brigadoon Bed and Breakfast went to Johan Kok, 18 holes (40 pts), and the best 9 hole to Eben Berg (17pts) On Friday MTC is holding their annual Corporate day and thanks to them for coming back to Rossmund. Remember that on Saturday, Bank Windhoek is kindly
sponsoring a Better Ball Medal Competition. Again our grateful thanks for their loyal ongoing support. Bankers, we really appreciate it. Get your names down soon. And our usual gentle reminder - the Club Matchplay competition must keep moving along and the next rounds must be completed by (the extended date) 13 July 2013. Just a reminder, to win your prize you must be present at the prize giving. Besides being friendly and sociable, it is a courtesy to our sponsors for without them, we would not have competitions
with prizes. We have a new sponsor for ‘Hole in 1’ on Hole 16, the Rossmund Pro Shop, so start aiming! Thanks Marco. On Sunday is the Swakop monthly SAGES Competition meeting at about 07:30. Tee off by 08:00 at the latest. Be there SAGES. Planning ahead, the M U LT I C H O I C E Swakopmund Open is being held on the 21 June. Entries must be in by the cut-off date, 18 June. “FAIRWAY: A narrow strip of mown grass that separates two groups of golfers looking for lost balls in the rough.”

Wêreldbeker-koors loop hoog
Namibia’s
up and coming bowls star
Carel (Cabous) Olivier (15) is a Namibian youngster of many talents. After receiving national colours for squash and gymnastic and also playing rugby and golf, Olivier got involved in bowls last year at a corporate event and hasn’t looked back ever since. Shortly after his first steps in the bowling community, the 15-year old joined the Namib Park Bowling Club (NPBC) in Walvis Bay where he quickly made a name for himself.
His biggest achievement to date came two weeks ago at the Namibian Nationals, which was hosted by the Namibia Bowling Association (NBA) at different venues throughout Windhoek. Olivier marched through the men’s plate division, coming up against veteran
Sandy Joubert in the final. The game between the two generations was followed closely by the spectators, as many wanted to see as to how good exactly Olivier has become in his short bowling carrier. It quickly became evident that the youngster was able to handle the pressure, defeating
Joubert with 21:12. Olivier then went on to win the Junior (Novice) category at the Walvis Bay Bowling Club last weekend, competing against six other players.
Namibia’s very own world champion Douw Calitz had this to say about Olivier: “His first quality that captured my attention was his exceptional delivery and, in my opinion, a good constant delivery is one of the most important skills in bowls for success.” “We’ve played the Namibian National Championships two weeks ago and I was excited to see him in the final of the Plates singles. There he again caught my attention with his
fantastic delivery and the exceptional way how he handled the pressure. The whole match he was calm and expressed no tension, which is also important in bowls not to show your opponent when you feel under pressure. It is now our duty as senior bowlers to assist Cabous and ensure this talented young athlete is well looked after and given the necessary exposure – because my feeling tells me he is a potential future legend.”
