Mellissa loses the battle against cancer Madelaine Laubscher
It was a moment of shock and sadness when we at namib times received the news that Mellissa Bester (28) had died 45 minutes earlier. Melissa, who was diagnosed with cancer last year, and was putting up a brave fight while always carrying a broad smile, was an integral part of our lives the last few months – we were fighting her fight with her, from the sidelines. She was diagnosed with Burkitt lymphoma last year September which is a form of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in which
cancer starts in immune cells. Recognised as the fastest growing human tumor, Burkitt lymphoma is as-
sociated with impaired immunity and is rapidly fatal if left untreated. However, intensive chemotherapy can achieve
long term survival in more than half the people with Burkitt lymphoma. Mellissa received radiation and chemotherapy,
but was given approximately six months to live, unless she received a stem-cell transplant that costs between N$500
000 and N$900 000. Various companies and individuals have held fundraisers to try and assist Mellissa in her need

Deloitte and Touche group officially opened their office doors in Walvis Bay yesterday at a ceremony held at their new office.
The firm is one of the largest as well as one of Namibia’s leading professional services and specialises in consulting, providing financial advisory, audits book, tax and risk advisory. According to the firm's Country Managing Partner, Erwin Tjipuka one of the firm’s reasons to open their doors and why they chose Walvis Bay in particular has to do with the harbour town being a key growth area for Namibia because of both the current and future planned economic ac-
tivities. “This move is not only in line with the firm’s vision to be the leading professional services firm in Namibia, but will also complement Deloitte Africa’s vision of being a truly Pan-African firm that will be able to provide seamless service to our clients across the continent” Tjipuka explained. He further added that with the opening of the new office, Deloitte will expand its footprint to one of the key trading hubs within the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC).
Mellissa timeously. She would have received the operation in South Africa as soon as enough money was raised. Approximately N$430 000 was raised within a few months. Unfortunately Mellissa grew too weak - she passed away in Windhoek yesterday. The namib times spoke to her mother just after the news broke. “I want to thank everyone who assisted us throughout her journey with cancer. We are all very grateful. There is peace in my heart now that she has passed on, because she was in a lot of pain and it was not easy to bear. She is in a better place now and without pain and suffering. We have not decided on a date for her funeral yet. The funeral will probably take place in Swakopmund or in Walvis Bay. Mellissa’s wish was that if she did not survive, the funds raised should go to another sufferer of Burkit lymphoma. However, that will still have to be decided by the lawyers. She passed away
The firm already has seven partners and employs 106 professional, having been at the forefront of transformation within the accounting profession Deloitte has trained more than 40% of the black qualified Namibian Chartered Accountants. The firm’s office in Walvis Bay will be headed by Arlignton Matenda who has recently been promoted Associate Director. The Mayor of Walvis Bay Councillor Uillika Nambahu who launched the new office applauded the firm on their achievements.
This story cannot be complete without recognising the efforts Deloitte has and continues to make in alleviating the shortage of chartered accountants and other professionals in tax and advisory services.
In particular its efforts to promote the entrance of the previously disadvantaged members of our society into the profession” Nambahu said. She encouraged other “captains” of industry
which were present at the launch to continue investing in people and to ensure that the country’s employment figures reflect fairly on the demographics of Namibia.
Continued from page 1 at 12:05 yesterday,” her mother said. According to the lawyers who deal with the funds that were raised, it is still not decided what will happen to the monies raised. “We are not certain yet. We will have to get legal advice. There were a few companies who made big donations who asked that if something would happen, the money be returned to them. We have to contact these companies and ask whether we should return the money or use it for other costs, such as with the funeral. In conclusion, we cannot yet say where the money will go. It is still to be decided,” says Diana Sass of Van Rensburg Associates. The local musicians in Walvis Bay and Swakopmund were planning a music festival on 9 May at Atlantis Sport Centre, also to raise funds for Mellissa. According to them the festival might still take place, in memory of Mellissa, but it still has to be confirmed. “We were planning a festival for Mellissa in May. Unfortunately it could not be

We are very grateful for everyone still willing to help raise funds. We will decide whether we are continuing with the festival or not in due time. Condolences to her family and friends.” AJ Kruger who has survived cancer has also been instrumental in raisingfunds for her spoke to the newspaper just after he heard the news..
“It is very sad that Melissa has passed away. It is a really big shock to me. I could remember the last time I saw Melissa - she was full of smiles and happiness. I have never come across anyone so beautiful as Melissa. To know that I never got to fully know Melissa makes me very sad. I would have loved to spend more time with her. My heart goes out to her family and loved ones. Rest in peace Melissa. I will for always remember you as a reason to stay motivated. You’re my hero!” he said.

difficult to treat. Dr Tucker said: “The spread of cancer to other organs or lymph nodes is a critical stage in cancer development. “The spread of a tumour to other organs or lymph nodes makes treatment more difficult and makes the progression of the cancer less predictable and more lethal. “Our research aims to identify unique changes within certain types of cancer that increase the likelihood of spread, so these can be targeted therapeutically.” Ms Amunjela has found that changes in the behaviour of specific Popdc proteins can affect how readily cancer tissue spreads. Ms Amunjela explained: “We are among only a handful of people in the world who are actively investigating the role of Popdc 1, 2 and 3 proteins in the spread of tumours. “So far we can say that these proteins seem to be important in determining the rate that cells divide and migrate which means
that they affect the likelihood of cancer spreading to other organs. “It seems that these molecules act as a switch where they can affect the rate of division or migration.” This study is the first to identify these proteins as possible targets in future cancer treatments. Ms Amunjela added: “These proteins represent relatively specific potential targets for new drug therapies, and it is hoped that Popdc-directed drugs will be more specifically targeted to the affected sites with less damage to healthy tissue.” The research looked at these proteins in different types of tissue to investigate if they behaved differently in different cell lines. The study looked at the impact of Popdc 1, 2 and 3 in breast, gastric and astrocytoma cancer cells and found that the behaviour of these proteins differed according to the type of tissue they were in. Ms Amunjela said: “It is very interesting to find that the effect of these proteins
varies according to the type of cancer we looked at. “Not only are we considering these molecules as potential drug targets, we are also learning how they act in different types of cancer. As a result, this research may pave the way in personalised medicine for tailored, cancer-specific therapies by potentially switching off the tumour’s ability to spread.“ The work has been carried out with the added contribution of final year undergraduate students, Joanna Mitchell and Fiona McKissock, who recently undertook projects with the research group.” Joanne Amunjela will present these exciting findings at the Genes and Cancer conference held at Cambridge University the next two days. When I replied to her e-mail on Friday, I almost immediately received an answer from her… I told her about the Facebook post and she said she would certainly visit
Joanne doing research our page - and she did so indeed… several times, leaving acknowledgments and thank you notes, and likes. The incredibly positive wave from the community made me realise how important it was to share stories of hope - I knew it was front page material from the moment I opened Joanne’s email - what I had not known then, was that the front page of namib times would today also carry a front page story of deep pain to the community - one of another beautiful Walvis Bay resident, who lost her brave
battle against cancer, at the same time that Joanne would bring many with cancer a ray of hope… Yesterday afternoon my phone rang. It was Joanne, calling form the UK, to tell me that she’d just sent me the photos I asked from her and to thank namib times and the Namibian community for its positivity and kindness. Let us salute these two brave, bright women, aged 28, from the heart of this community - let us never forget them. Let us live in Hope through our Pain.

All African Law Deans' forum kicks off... Sharlien Tjambari This year marks the 4th All Africa Law Deans' Forum. During the past three years, 15 meetings have helped law school leaders from around the world to shape a coherent approach to improving global legal education and the rule of law. The forum is hosted by the University of Namibia (UNAM) Law Faculty in Swakopmund, at the Seaside Hotel and Spa. The Forum will be held over a period of three days, from 13 to 15 April. There are around 33 Deans from all over the African continent. In carrying out the mission of preparing their students to understand, analyse and honour the law, law school Deans and leaders have come together with the aim to distill ideas and gather information in order to work towards a common goal of implementing a better global legal education. The forum also aims to gather the different regional evaluative processes in legal education through baseline study, and from there to develop a global standard for evaluating the
quality of legal research and education. In his welcoming address and introduction, the AttorneyGeneral, Sakeus Shanghala said “A lawyer is so many things to many people, but like doctors, they are guided by policies and principles.” He also added that lawyers are central to the realisation of the rule of law and enjoyment of rights and freedoms. According to him, there are only 714 registered lawyers in Namibia. The forum will focus on the following aspects: The Judiciary and Legal Education, Current challenges: Quality assurance and evaluation, and the development of standards. On the last day the Deans will be treated with a taste of activities and tours of the Coastal region.

- Kapere's message to the youth at Erongo Independence celebrations...
This past Saturday many people from all corners of Erongo Region gathered at the Arandis Sports Stadium for the belated 25th Independence celebrations which was organised by Erongo Regional Council. The celebrations started off with the NAVY brass band marching from the traffic circle which is situated at the entrance of Arandis town to the sports stadium. The guests were treated with traditional dances and songs from different groups of the society, the Mayors of the five towns, Usakos, Karibib,
and Omaruru, Walvis Bay and Swakopmund, of Erongo Region and the Governor of Erongo Region were also present. Even though the independence is celebrated on 21 March every year, this year's celebration was different as it included the inauguration of the new President Dr Hage Gein-
gob. The Erongo Regional Council felt that it was only fair to share the experience with the people of Erongo Region at a later stage because not everybody went to Windhoek for the celebrations of Independence. In his speech, the Chairperson of the National Youth Council of Namibia, Mr Mandela Kapere, said the struggle for independence was not fought outside the borders of Namibia but inside the borders of Namibia. “Namibia is free and shall be free
forever” that is a quote from our former President Dr Sam Nujoma on the day that Namibia became independent. In his address to the youth, Mr Kapere said the youth should remind themselves of what is important and need to know where they are going without forgetting where they come from. According to Mr Kapere “many people understand that the independence struggle was for land but this is not so, the struggle was for the dignity of the Namibian people.” He added that “the youth must make sure that the dignity of Namibians is restored and preserve the hard won dignity of the struggle.” He also advised the youth that the Government is a tool they can use to restore the dignity of the people so the youth should not see the Government as the enemy. In conclusion, Kapere said “our struggle for today is to move Namibia forward”.
Sharlien Tjambari On 26 September 2012, Shoprite and Trustco Limited launched a pilot project for its “Shop for Life” product which was a free life product underwritten by Trustco Life Limited. During this time more than 216 000 customers enrolled for the product. The Shop for Life was aimed at providing free life cover to Shoprite/ Checkers customers. Unfortunately the product was not successful and Shoprite/Checkers and Trustco limited decided to terminate the agreement in February this year. According to Mr Bob Kandetu, the Head of Corporate Communications at Trustco Limited, this was communicated via short message service to all customers who had active cover under the product. “A press release in this regard was also placed in all the major newspapers and on the social media pages of the company” Mr Kandetu said. He also added that since the launch of the product in 2012 until termination thereof, more than N$1.5 million was paid out in claims to families of the free life
cover recipients by Trustco Life Limited. According to Mr Kandetu, while the intention of the pilot project was to roll it out in South Africa and the rest of Africa, the client (Shoprite/ Checkers) decided against expansion to other markets. Mr Kandetu also said, during the pilot project all insurance premiums were paid on behalf of customers by Shoprite/Checkers and the benefits that accrued to the customers were absolutely free. Trustco Life, as the underwriter of the Free Life benefit, offered to all those cus-
tomers with active cover an alternative funeral product at an affordable monthly of N$12. Even though Trustco Limited tried their best to convey the message about the closing date of the Free Life cover project, many people where uninformed, they were left with confusion and didn't know what was happening. Swakopmund residents came to our office to lay a complaint about the free life cover because they felt that they were not informed about the project coming to an end.

Nicodemus Shivute David (22) made his first appearance in the Walvis Bay Magistrates’ court the past week, after he had allegedly stabbed and killed his girlfriend’s brother over the Easter weekend. According to media reports David allegedly stabbed his girlfriend’s’ brother on Saturday with a knife following an incident involving N$20. It is further alleged that the accused confronted the victim after his girlfriend had informed him that her money had disappeared and she was suspecting her brother as the one responsible. The authorities confirmed the incident and said that they suspected the accused confronted the vic-

John Legend has launched a campaign to end mass incarceration The Grammy-winning singer announced the multiyear initiative, FREE AMERICA, yesterday. He will visit and perform at a correctional facility on Thursday in Austin, Texas, where he also will be part of a press conference with state legislators to discuss Texas’ criminal justice system. “We have a serious problem with incarceration in this country,” Legend said in an interview. “It’s destroying families, it’s destroying communities and we’re the most incarcerated country in the world, and when you look deeper and look at the reasons we got to this place, we as a society made some choices politically and legislatively, culturally to deal with poverty, deal with mental illness in a certain way and that way usually involves using incarceration.”
Legend, 36, will also visit a California state prison and co-host a criminal justice event with Politico in Washington, DC, later this month. The campaign will include help from other artists - to be announced - and organisations committed to ending mass incarceration. “I’m just trying to create some more awareness to this issue and trying to make some real change legislatively,” he said. “And we’re not the only ones. There are senators that are looking at this, like
Rand Paul and Cory Booker, there are other nonprofits that are looking at this, and I just wanted to add my voice to that.” Legend’s speech at the Academy Awards this year struck a chord when he spoke about mass incarceration. He won the Oscar for best original song with rapper Common for “Glory” from the film “Selma.” The singer said an early victory for his campaign was the approval of Proposition 47 in California in November, which calls for
treating shoplifting, forgery, fraud, petty theft and possession of small amounts of drugs - including cocaine, heroin and methamphetamines - as misdemeanors instead of felonies. “Once you have that tag of a felony on your name, it’s hard for you to do anything,” Legend said. “Getting those reduced to misdemeanors really impacted a lot of lives and we hope to launch more initiatives like that around the country.” NAMPA / AP
Katangolo in court for verbally abusing police commissioner Mavourlene Gaes
Nestor Katangolo (31) returned to the Walvis Bay Magistrate’s court this week facing a charge of assault by threat after he verbally attacked Nampol Deputy Commissioner Otillie Kashuupulwa. Katangolo already had a run-in with the law following several drug possession charges where he was apprehended and charged with the possession of illegal dependence producing substances (cocaine). It is reported that on 9 April he threatened the commissioner by allegedly saying “I will deal with you”.
He was granted bail of N$1 000 by magistrate John Sindano Liwoyo on condition that he does not go anywhere near her or the Walvis Bay regional police headquarters. The matter was postponed to 2 June for the accused to gain legal aid and for further investigation.

Obtaining Fishing
Oil off Namibian Coast still
WHY? The marine resources are limited and currently some of them are overfished or over collected. It is necessary that everybody uses them wisely and carefully to secure the future harvesting needs by protecting the stock. Quantity/number of marine resources harvestable, minimum size limits of fish and crayfish that can be caught, open season etc. help to manage stocks to avoid the total disappearance of some species in our waters. Do not leave bait or fish on the beach! Either take it home or return it to the sea. This food attracts scavengers like jackals and gulls that prey on other bio-diversity. When you are back home after the holiday, it also inflates the predator population. Where can you get a license for angling, crayfish diving & bait/mussels collection?

About five international oil companies have failed to find oil off the coast of Namibia in recent years, despite promises and signs that somewhere under the waters the golden liquid lies in abundance. So far, oil exploration companies have dug 18 wells but walked away with empty barrels. There was hope in 2013 when HRT Participacoes em Petroleo SA announced that they were about to get oil in the Walvis Bay Basin. With fanfare and much pomp, the company showed off samples of what they called noncommercial oil, which could lead them to the source of real oil. The find set Namibia’s hopes high when prospects that come with oil dawned on the ordinary people who foresaw job opportunities and improved living standards. At the time, the company called for a press conference at State House that was attended by the then Prime Minister now president Hage Geingob and the then trade minister, Calle Schlettwein, who is now the finance minister. In a statement, HRT said it had identified two well-developed source rocks rich in organic carbon. Both are in the oil- generating window. It also said the well also encountered several oil-saturated, thin-bed-
ded-sandy reservoirs, and had collected four 450-cc samples. HRT had 10 blocks in four licenses off the Namibian coast. The company drilled three wells between 2012 and 2013 but failed to find any commercially viable oil. But less than two years later, those hopes have been dashed after the company started folding up and closing down its offices in Windhoek. Minister of mines and energy Obeth Kandjoze has said he was aware that HRT was retrenching some of its 10 workers at the capital Windhoek office. Petroleum Commissioner Immanuel Mulunga also said they are aware of internal problems dogging HRT in Brazil. “We are being told unofficially that they are no longer interested in pursuing their exploration efforts in Namibia and we know that they are winding up their business in this country. We will be approaching them shortly for clarification on the way forward,” Mulunga said, adding that HRT’s licenses had also expired. Other companies that

are either still trying their luck or have tried are: Tullow Oil Plc,Total SA, BP Plc and Chariot Oil & Gas Ltd have not been lucky. Last year, Spain’s Repsol SA, started drilling in the Walvis Bay Basin with hopes of striking it rich. After sinking in about 1 billion Namibian dollars (about 83 million U.S. dollars), Repsol came out dry. The Australian company, Tullow Oil Plc, announced also that they would start drilling their block off the coast of Namibia this year. The company further said its chances of striking oil were high after acquiring a block from Pancontinental Oil & Gas. Speaking during last year’s oil and gas conference held in Wind-
hoek end of September, Tullow Oil Plc chief executive officer Barry Rushworth said they would carry out 3D seismic surveys in June last year. The UK energy explorer, Chariot Oil & Gas Ltd, has also sunk in millions of U.S. dollars in a bid to reach oil but to no avail. The company hold licenses for eight blocks in Namibia, which, according to its chief executive officer Larry Bottomley, would require anything between 80 million and 100 million U.S. dollars to drill. Bottomley who also attended the oil and gas conference said Chariot would look for a partner with knowledge of deep water drilling for its next bid.
“We are looking to partner and secure a rig as soon as possible to drill at one of the prospects,” he said. “Right now I have no idea on when and with who we will do the drilling but we are working very hard and we are very optimistic about Namibia.” Since then, there has not been any news as to whether Chariot had acquired such a partner or when their next drill exercise would start. Bottomley believes, despite the past failures that the Namibian coast sits on massive amounts of oil. He said: “Namibia has potential for discovery, giant scale discovery.” Xinhua/NAMPA

His House Care Centre in Walvis Bay celebrated their 10 year anniversary on Saturday afternoon at the premises. The namib times joined the event. Doctor Gustav Bertelsmann delivered a welcoming speech and handed out medals to individuals who have been offering their assistance throughout the years. “We want to celebrate God's provision over the last ten years and all of you were invited, because in some way, each of you have been part of that provision. May it be a sponsor, a volunteer, a resident, a family member or a friend. Ten years ago we started with one patient and today we care for 21 inhouse residents, A total of 75 in and out-patients have been cared forover the last decade. In order to be able to do this we had to rebuild, expand and renovate a total of five times. Mrs Hesta Herbst with Mrs Ena Venter During that time we have trained 62 caretakers, some of who are employed by hospitals today. His House is not just a centre where the elderly are cared for, but also an institution where community upliftment and training is done. His House has a homely feeling that I have not felt in any other institution. It is a place of joy and happiness where our senior citizens can feel at home. None of this would have been possible without the generous donations of individuals, companies and the tireless work of all the volunteers and dedicated staff members,” he said. According to Bertelsmann this year they are planning to build two more garages, but feel a need and calling to expand His House once again. “As you might have heard Michelle House has closed down and this has decreased the available frailcare beds in Walvis Bay by ten. Our waiting list consists of 27 people. Statistically speaking, the last person will only be helped in 2025. Hence the urgency to expand. If I look at life in general I think we live in two levels. The first being a lower level where we interact with people, our work, our family and the normal run of every-day life. The second being a higher level where we have God's calling for our lives. If we can manage to get these two levels to overlap , I think we will live fulfilled lives. This is why His House survives. The staff that work here, the volunteers giving their time, and the donators have heard the calling and have made it a part of their livess. Thank you for everyone's support during the past ten years.” According to spokesperson, Mrs Ina Jones, the event was a huge success. “Most of the family members were present along with the donaters and volunteers. Entertainment was done by Mr Nelis Kruger and the food was lovely. Thank you to everyone who was present and for all the donations,” she concluded.

The CEO of the Namibian partner of Namibia FlyAfrica, Clifford Strydom of Nomad Aviation says the cheaper flights envisaged for Namiba, that had been scheduled to take off in February, and were rescheduled to later, due to the logistics and paperwork in this regard, will hopefully be a reality soon. Ndishiinena Yameinge Hamukoto I hope by the end of this month please please please. Andre Everts I am waiting. Amor Saxe May it happen soon! Penny Dawson When will flyafrica travel between mthatha and jhb. The cost from sa airlink is a rip-off. Xamiseb Ferdinand Give air Namibia a run for their money, good sport. Merlene Greyvenstein Well, I was a victim of flyafrica’s advertisement to make use of their airline while their paperwork was defintely not right yet! however, they really refunded me very quickly.
the good news is: I paid R185 more for two tickets with air namibia that takes me to walvis bay. although your fair for flights to windhoek might be the cheapest, the cost to go further to walvis bay is costly and escalates the actual expenses to the extent that the cheap ticket to windhoek is not worth it. I was and now again will remain an air namibia fan. Esme Scheepers Van Wyk About time I should say! Peter Odendaal Advertising and getting hopes up? a bit prematre me thinks! Zaheer Jevu Air Namibia = sour grapes!

Concern over rotten meat
After the newspaper received numerous complaints from residents regarding rotten meat at Spar in Walvis Bay, we investigated and also came across rotten meat on the shelves in the shop recently. Mariette Brand Oh hell yes! Story Hosea Nt only in Spar, jst the whole shop in Namibia, hve the same stry, bt they mst
stop sell rotten things pls! Elizabeth Tórsdóttir Hentze Some pies we bought there tasted like they had been marinated in disinfectant. to hide the fact maybe? Lol. Brad Withyman Spar customers are doing the quality control for them. They cant employ a person to check the dates on labels? Janine Hopking I’ve had rotten fillet there so many times that I open the packaging at the
counter. I’ve also complained numerous times only to be told that the butcher is happy with the quality. Ruusa Nusicu Rotten silver angel fish at Spar Oshakati. Bruce Martin Dentlinger Volkswinkel Spar is tops dankie Oom Land Benade. Dirk Kotze Woerman brock 2 times in one month.

Swakopmund Prison offenders clean public areas... Sharlien Tjambari
The Namibian Correctional Services day will be commemorated on a national level this year. The commemoration is scheduled to take place on 24 April at the Lucious S Mahoto Correctional Service Training College, situated about two kilometres from the central business district of Omaruru town. According to the Commissioner General, Raphael T Hamunyela, the underlying theme for this year’s commemoration is centered on acts of goodwill within our communities. All the correctional institutions for ex-
ample, Namibian Correctional Services (NCS) Headquarters, Regional Command Headquarters and correctional facilities are required to engage in some acts of goodwill towards the day of the commemoration. The Swakopmund
Prison chose to clean up the public areas. Last week Thursday, a group of 20 offenders, accompanied by Superintendent Ndahalele, Chief Sakaria, Chief Kapoko, Correctional Officer Swartbooi and Senior Officer Shonena,
cleaned and picked up plastic bags, bottles and glass, in an area stretching from the roadblock to the street leading to the Henties Bay road, which runs behind the informal settlement of DRC. On the following day,
Friday, they continued with their chores and cleaned towards the Henties Bay highway. According to Supt. Edward Tjivangurura, they were given a number of options to choose from, for example: old age home
visitations, hospital visitations, giving motivational talks at schools etc. But he opted for the clean-up of public areas, says Supt. Tjivangurura. These activities will continue until 22 April. According to Commissioner Gene-
ral, Raphael T Hamunyela, on 23April a national goodwill activity will be carried out in Omaruru, in which all correctional officers and NCS staff members who will be in Omaruru will participate.

Kim... not worried about travelling costs Sharlien Tjambari
Kim Hansen is a grade four learner at the Private School Swakopmund who will also participate at the World Dancing Championship competition in Los Angeles. Like all the other dancers, Kim loves and enjoys dancing, according to her, dancing is her main focus at this point in time. Her mother, Mrs Angie Hansen said “Kim is very lucky as we do not need to worry about the travelling costs because we will be in California in June.” Kim’s brother plays inline hockey and the whole family will travel to California because he is going to participate in the North American Roller Hockey Championships. They will not return to Namibia after the hockey, which is ending by the end of June, they will wait for Kim’s competition. She is definitely one lucky girl, not
having to worry about travelling costs. When she heard her name being announced as one of the dancers going to Los Angeles, Kim responded with tears of joy. Kim also confessed that she will go to Los Angeles because she wants to gain more experience and dreams of being or dancing in the Step-Up movies. She says she can’t wait and she is very excited. Kim is very happy for her teammates who are also going, “but I am not too happy that my partner, Tatum is not going”, although she understands why her partner is not going.

Does opportunity come only once in a lifetime? Sharlien Tjambari
They say opportunity comes only once in a lifetime - but many believe otherwise. Tatum Liebenberg is a very active young girl from Private School Swakopmund. Tatum is only nine years old and has already begun making a mark in society. She is a dancer who dances and trains at the Dancing Factory, based in Swakopmund. A couple of weeks ago, Tatum participated in the National Dancing competition which was hosted in Windhoek. She was chosen as one of the dancers to go and participate in the World Dancing Championships scheduled for July this year in Los Angeles. “I was excited and very proud when I heard my name” said Tatum. Unfortunately Tatum will not go and participate, as she is too young. She believes that she has her whole life ahead of her and has a lot of opportu-
nities waiting in the future. Her mom said she prepared Tatum before she was chosen that even if she won, there was no way she could go on that trip because of her age, “so she had been prepared beforehand” said her mom. Tatum also says she is very happy that her friend can go and at the same time very unhappy because her dancing partner, Kim, will not be able to perform the dance they usually dance together without her. “I love the Dance Factory and I plan on staying there and advancing and learning more. I am very lucky to have Carmen as my instructor. If it wasn’t for her I would not have made it this far” says Tatum.

D i e We s t C o a s t Sharks het Saterdag teen Dolphins Rugby Klub gespeel vir hulle eerste amptelike tuiswedstryd by hulle nuwe veld.
Walvis Bay Rugby Club. Coastal summer
With teams from each section playing off against each other in a doubles bout to round up the League, was a super idea. It was a great way to get the players together to have a final sweat before the prize giving. After all the points were tallied the winners of the respective sections were as follows:Group A – Imanuel Amorongo, Group B – Wynand Breytenbach, Group C – Zaan de Witt & Group D – Lindsay Lottering. The event closed with good munchies and an epic bout of socialising reminiscent of the good old days. If it was anything to go by, then it's going to be a good … good…. Socials.
