Mellissa loses the battle against cancer Madelaine Laubscher
It was a moment of shock and sadness when we at namib times received the news that Mellissa Bester (28) had died 45 minutes earlier. Melissa, who was diagnosed with cancer last year, and was putting up a brave fight while always carrying a broad smile, was an integral part of our lives the last few months – we were fighting her fight with her, from the sidelines. She was diagnosed with Burkitt lymphoma last year September which is a form of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in which
cancer starts in immune cells. Recognised as the fastest growing human tumor, Burkitt lymphoma is as-
sociated with impaired immunity and is rapidly fatal if left untreated. However, intensive chemotherapy can achieve
long term survival in more than half the people with Burkitt lymphoma. Mellissa received radiation and chemotherapy,
but was given approximately six months to live, unless she received a stem-cell transplant that costs between N$500
000 and N$900 000. Various companies and individuals have held fundraisers to try and assist Mellissa in her need
