At 90 still going strong. Founding President Sam Nujoma visited the port of Walvis Bay on Friday

Four Walvis Bay residents, who were found guilty on Friday of kidnapping and assault, will know their fate in less than a month. Logan Pretorius, Sandra Riobo, Ashley Januarie and Curven Vries were found guilty in the Swakopmund regional court on Friday for the kidnapping on 30 August 2014 of three young boys to Pretorius' home in Walvis Bay's Meersig suburb. In the garage of the house followed several hours of merciless assaults and degrading treatment of Continued on page 2

Namibia's Founding President Dr Sam Nujoma paid a courtesy visit to the port of Walvis Bay on Friday where he was briefed on latest developments. The Founding President was deeply impressed with progress made with the various port expansion projects and added the port of Walvis Bay is now a facility with an importance for the African continent and no more a port only for Namibia. Oil spill in port Floris Steenkamp A tanker ship sprung an oil leak alongside in the port of Walvis Bay over the weekend, triggering an oil clean up response. The tanker ship Ursu is believed to have started leaking oil after a bearing seal on one of the vessel's propeller shaft failed. Two front page pictures as well as the picture above show the vessel alongside with a technical team on a semi-rigid inflatable boat trying to assess the damage. The oil can be seen as a brown slick floating on the water. Inflated oil booms (also visible in the slick) that floats on the water were deployed to prevent the spillage from expanding. A process was then started to pour a biodegradable material on the oil which dissolved and neutralised the oil. At the time of going to press Namport was yet to make a public announcement on the status of the oil spill incident. Oil flow to the affected propeller shaft was discontinued and the vessel was towed out into the bay off the port of Walvis Bay where a decision would be made whether the vessel would proceed to its next destination, albeit with limited propulsion, and whether repairs would be conducted locally. The vessel owners will have to foot the bill for the oil spill clean-up, it was said yesterday.

Logan Pretorius

Steinsund off to the fishing grounds

Continues from page 1 the boys. That included the boys being forced to drink salt water which caused them to vomit and then forced to eat the vomit. Pretorius suspected the boys were behind the death of one of his dogs. Pretorius claims to be dog breeder. Along with his girlfriend Sandra Riobo and two friends Januarie and Vries they dragged the boys from their bicycles, took them to Pretorius' residence where they were assaulted and tortured in order to obtain an admission that they were behind the dog's death. The four will be sentenced on 10 June this year.

Dr Nujoma Continues from page 1 President Nujoma in 2013 alongside then President Hifikepunye Pohamba officiated at the ground breaking ceremony which marked the official commencement of the container terminal on reclaimed land construction project. Now only a few years later the countdown has started to the commissioning of the new container terminal. President Nujoma also celebrated his 90th birthday on Sunday and was congratulated on this life milestone by Namibia's Head of State President Hage Geingob. President Geingob paid tribute to Dr Nujoma's hard work for Namibia and its people which started at a very young age. A fight of many decades that led to the Independence of Namibia in 1990, but also Dr Nujoma's sacrifices after Independence as Namibia's first democratically elected President. President Nujoma served three terms as Namibia's Head of State, the first term being the Founding Father and two subsequent terms as President of the Republic of Namibia.

Namib Times reported last week the fishing vessel Steinsund of Seaflower Pelagic Processing undertook her maiden fishing expedition from Walvis Bay. Seaflower Pelagic Processing was so kind to forward us this picture of the vessel as she left the fishing harbour last week.

Sea Shepherd’s Ocean Warrior makes an announced call

PRO-PRINT Gendev’s new fishing WALVIS BAY vessel here by Sunday If the weather and all the other variables 064-205854 play along, Gendev of Namibia's newly e-book edition @ http://issuu.com/ namibtimes www.namibtimes.net

acquired fishing trawler, “Zephyr”, would arrive in Walvis Bay by Sunday. The vessel is en route from Ireland to Walvis Bay. “The vessel's arrival is scheduled for 19 May”, a senior employee of Gendev confirmed yesterday.

The marine environmental group Sea Shepherd’s seagoing vessel Ocean Warrior is underway to Walvis Bay for repairs and maintenance. The vessel is scheduled alongside on Thursday. In contrast to a situation recently where the vessel was spotted off Pelican Point and seemingly keeping radio silence in order not to be detected, she is announced on the port log this time. Albeit the vessel is describe as a yacht on the port log, but in actual fact this vessel is an interceptor, designed and built to take on vessels at sea which are involved in illegal fishing.

Namport builds continental relations Floris Steenkamp Namport says the visit of African leaders to the port of Walvis Bay is a reflection of growing continental relationships between the port authority and landlocked African countries. The port of Walvis Bay is strategically located to serve as import and export hub for landlocked Southern African countries (countries with no direct access to the Ocean) and in this regard huge strides have been made to develop logistics corridors between Walvis Bay and these landlocked countries which include Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Southern Angola. The port of Walvis Bay remains optimistic about its future as logistics hub for Southern Africa and later this year commissions the container terminal on reclaimed land in the port of Walvis Bay which is expected to more than double container capacity for the port of Walvis Bay. On the pictures herewith: earlier this year Kenya's President Uhuru Kenyatta paid a visit to the port of Walvis Bay, followed by a visit to Walvis Bay by Botswana's President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi. Last week it was the turn of Guinea's President Alpha Condé. During both visits by these African heads of state, Namibia's President Dr Hage Geingob accompanied these foreign dignitaries to Walvis Bay, expressing his full support for the development of the port of Walvis Bay, but also the port of Lüderitz as the sea gateways to Southern Africa and markets overseas.

President Hage Geingob (above right) took time from his recent leave at the coast to accompany Botswana’s President Masisi on a tour of the port of Walvis Bay. “On the picture to the right: President Kenyatta (dressed in beige) on a tour of the port of Walvis Bay during his visit to Namibia during the country’s 29th Independence celebrations on 21 March this year. Premier Sports Trading (PST) donated basic needs to the value of N$1 000 and an amount of N$3 500 in cash to the Pap Mansion run by Barbra Kavita this past weekend. Apart from being an online licensed and registered betting company in Namibia, PST also tries to alleviate social issues and help those in need. PST is comprised of two experienced bookmakers with over 50 years' experience between them with sports betting all over the World since 1978. The spokesperson of PST, Franciska Ngodji told the Namib Times that they appreciate the loving efforts Kavita puts in to taking care of vulnerable children. “Kavita's open and loving nature and the smell of home lures many children to her kitchen, as she always has a big pot of porridge on the stove to feed anyone in need.” Franciska said. Because of this Kavita's house became known as the 'Pap Mansion'. Kavita became known as the “mommy” in this area. “Children just show up. They come to the house for a meal or just to hang out and some even stay permanently.” Kavita said and smiled while asking: “Who am I to turn them away?” Kavita makes sure the children who end up staying with her permanently are clothed, educated and well-behaved. “I believe that love can elevate hope and make children better people, it is all that matters. I was also raised by a single mother; it is not easy, but children do not need to suffer because of it.” Kavita explained. Kavita highly appreciates the kind gesture of PST and said that it was the best Mother's Day present ever.

SFC Business League 2019 The SFC Squash Club hosted the prestigious annual Business League during March and April 2019. The four teams displayed exceptional skills in their quest to secure bragging rights as champions for the next twelve months. It was perhaps one of the closest contested encounters with the four teams that battled it out for the top spot until the last round of play. The SFC Squash Clubwas exceptionally fortunate to secure the same sponsors as in 2018 with Visions Consulting, WB Hardware, Kesla Kitchens and KABT Holdings. This fact gave the competition a special competitive flavor whereby Kesla Kitchens needed to defend their title. WB Hardware came second in 2018, followed by Visions Consul-ting in the third place and KABT Holdings in fourth place. Matches were played best out of five games; point a rally to 11 per game. However, the final rounds of matches on 26 April 2019 were based on doubles matches. This year saw an upset where KABT Holdings, that received the “wooden spoon” in 2018, outwitted their competitors to secure the championship title in 2019. WB Hardware retained their second place spot, Kesla Kitchens came in third while Visions Consulting received the “wooden spoon” in 2019. What made the win of KABT Holdings even more special was the fact that it was the only team with the majority of female players (3 out of 5 players). The team members were ranked according to strength to compete against the equally ranked players of the other teams with the ranking as follows: KABT Holdings 1. Devon Savage, 2. Michelo Olivier and Werner van Riet, 3. Judith Savage, 4. Tina Rutters 5. Sonja Hopkins Visions Consulting 1. Rudi Koekemoer, 2 Conrad Wagner, 3 Lientjie Koekemoer, 4 Christy Bornman, 5 Wilco Rugheimer WB Hardware 1. Arno Kok, 2 Danie Jansen, 3 Christiane Beulker, 4 Tessa Roussouw, 5 Gunner Keil Kesla Kitchens 1. Wynand Labuschagne, 2 Danie Nel, 3 Charne Fourie, 4 Sarel Labuschagne, 5 Sumari Jens A special word of thanks is extended to the sponsors: Danie Jansen of WB Hardware, Sarel Labuschagne of Kesla Kitchens and Jacques Steenkamp of KABT Holdings and Rudi Koekemoer of Visions Consulting for their invaluable support. The final results following the fiercely contested SFC Business League 2019 are as follows: 1. KABT Holdings: 36 Points (Champions 2019) 2. WB Hardware: 32 Points 3. Kesla Kitchens: 31 Points 4. Visions Consulting: 27 Points
