New era for Karibib Marshallino Beukes
The Namibian Air Force headquarters will relocate from Grootfontein to Karibib, early next year. Other massive development projects are also on the town’s agenda. Unofficial sources noted that approximately 7 000 Namibian Defense Force members are expected to find their way to the new Air Force Base, as a result of the relocation. Commander Iyambo at the Karibib Air Force Base told the newspaper that the reason for the relocation was still not known to him, but he did recommend that the Air Force headquarters in Grootfontein be contacted. Numerous phone
calls to the headquarters, yesterday, proved futile. The Karibib Town Council also suggested that the Namibian Defense Force be contacted in this regard. The Karibib Council says the high influx of personnel will definitely result in people, keen to own properties in the town, thus the need for industrial erven will also increase. The Council has already established three new extensions in order to al-
leviate the high demand of residential dwellings expected in the town and a consultant to conduct the Environmental Impact Assessment has been appointed. The construction of services at Extension 2 is at the final stage and 309 erven are currently being serviced, of which 185 already are available. The site handover is scheduled for 30 November. Developers are presently busy with preliminary
designs for Extensions 3 and 4, the namib times was told.
Furthermore the Karibib Town Council is busy with the design of an Emer-
gency Response Unit, to be constructed within the current financial year, at

An SME park, which will be utilised by local small and medium businesses, to accelerate the local economic growth, is also in the pipeline, with architects already busy with primary designs. The construction of a Council Chamber, formalisation of
the informal settlements and private developments, such as a truck port, Business Park, development of Extension 4 Karibib middle and high and income groups, industrial and agricultural plots and also the development of a private medical practice are all some of the exiting endeavors in store, which will surely put Karibib steadfastly on the industrial map.

The namib times yesterday caught up with electoral official, Kambidhi Kaimo, and her team when she visited Gendev to explain the Seamen”s category voting process to the company’s sea going staff. Voting at Namibia’s diplomatic missions abroad and voting of sea going personnel in Walvis Bay started at 07:00 this morning
The owner of one of the coastal oyster farms recently found that his oyster mortality figure has suddenly increased drastically. He is very worried, and alleges it is not due to natural causes. He provided the newspaper with photos that he recently took, clearly showing sludge in the water. “This sludge can destroy the coastline during December and January, as there is very little wind during this time, making it difficult for the sludge to be blown away. It would be a good idea to put a temporary stop to the dredging in the lagoon area during the festive season. The seawater currently has a brownish colour, spreading all the way to Swakopmund, which looks very bad,” he said. According to him the increase in mortalities has risen to 4 000 per day. “It is possible that it is due to natural causes, as natural causes have been the reason for mortalities in the past. However I have not seen any sulphur eruptions this year and that is why I am concerned. Strong winds put oxygen into the water, and rid the water of impurities. We did have a few days where the wind was not that strong, which could have led to the higher mortalities. Not getting enough strong wind could have a negative effect on all coastal marine life. I am not saying that the dredging is to blame for the sludge. It would however be wise to stop the
dredging for a few weeks to give the coastline some recovery and cleanup time, if possible,” he said. He noted that control over the coastline seemed to be slack. He reiterated that his oyster farm is not the only one struggling with mortalities, the past month. “The sludge resembles sewerage, and could be coming from ships. However, I cannot confirm whether it is definitely due to this,” he said. He has allegedly also noticed diesel/oil spills in the water of up to 500 meter in diameter “I have spoken to Namport about this problem. I was told that I should consult the Ministry of Fisheries. However the Ministry of Fisheries only directed me back to Namport. I do not know who to talk to anymore. The ships are lying close to the oyster farms. I believe that if there were more control regarding the protection of marine life, there would already be an improvement,” he concluded. The communications manager at Namport, Ms Joanne Stevens said, “we have a very dedicated team doing inspections on a daily basis and keeping control. We will investigate the matter regarding
Sludge in the ocean the allegations about control, however, the environment is important to us. It would also not benefit anyone at all to bring the dredging to a halt over the festive season,” she said. The newspaper contacted the Ministry of Fisheries for comment. The public relations officer says he suspects that the mortalities are due to natural causes, as it cannot be due to the sewerage.
“The sewerage from the ships is treated before it is released. It goes through different tanks and is processed before it is released. It has no effect on the water. If the cause was due to this waste, there would have been mortalities on a permanent basis and not only during the past month and a variety of marine life would have been affected, not only oysters,” he concluded.
“Kudu gas-to-power project not viable,” says Hangala Former NamPower Managing Director Leake Hangala said the much- talked-about Kudu gas-to-power project is not viable. “It is a waste of time and money. Even those people who are spearheading the project know very well that the project is not viable,” he claimed during the one-day Namibian Energy Policy Forum in Windhoek on Thursday. Hangala explained that the project will not be viable due to the current situation whereby a lot of gas was discovered recently in Mozambique and Tanzania, adding that investors will opt to approach those countries. He said the Kudu gas-topower project also does not have an operator after the United Kingdom (UK)-based Tullow Oil withdrew its participation. South Africa’s Eskom has also not indicated any interest in buying electricity

through the project, he stated. The Kudu gas-topower project is being spearheaded by the Ministry of Mines and Energy and the Namibia Power Corporation (NamPower). Hangala said the project is not economically and financially viable, but would not elaborate on why he said so. He charged that those who are spearheading the project are “not telling the leaders the truth”. “It is time for those who are spearheading the project to report the reality of it to the leaders. They should explore other alternatives to generate electricity, and leave the Kudu gas project out,” he stated. Hangala said this in the presence of Mines and En-
ergy Minister Isak Katali, current NamPower Managing Director Paulinus Shilamba and Minister of Trade and Industry Calle Schlettwein, amongst other participants. Efforts to get comment from Katali or Shilamba proved futile as they were attending the forum. Just last month, the government was informed by Tullow Oil that it was withdrawing its participation from the muchanticipated Kudu gas-topower project. Tullow and Itochu, a Japanese company, jointly owned 46 per cent of the shareholding in the Kudu gas project as upstream partners. financial problems within their company. The Kudu gas-to-power project is set to increase power production in Namibia. Late last month, the Namibian Government announced that it will avail N$4,3 billion to fund the 44 percent share owned by the National Petroleum Corporation of Namibia (Namcor) in the project. The main elements of the project are the development of the Kudu gas field and the construction of an 800 megawatt (MW) combined cycle natural gas-fired power station near Oranjemund in southern Namibia. When completed, this power station will feed the Namibian, Zambian and South African power grids. Hangala on Thursday also

accused Government of ‘abusing’ NamPower. “Government is putting a burden on NamPower, and now the company has a lot of projects amounting to billions. All these projects are still pending,” he stressed. He thus called on Government to find other entities to share these responsibilities with NamPower. Hangala, who recently rejoined the ruling Swapo-Party five years after quitting it, said NamPower is doing its best, but the burden is just too much. The founder and executive chairman of the Hangala Group left the ruling party after the 2007 Swapo congress, saying he wanted to concentrate on business. (NAMPA)

These charges follow the fatal shooting of the suspect’s girlfriend, Louise Alupe (24) in the Kuisebmond Beach area on Monday evening. The suspect will remain in custody until 29 January 2015, when he will appear in court again. Police reports confirmed the incident, and elaborated that police were contacted by community members in the area of the shooting. When they arrived at the scene they found the victim’s blindfolded body with 2 shots to her head. The suspect was
found not far from her, also blind-folded, with slit wrists in a suicide attempt. According to police, after having shot Alupe, Petrus turned the pistol on himself, and when the pistol malfunctioned, he slit his wrists with a sharp object. The suspect was taken to the Walvis Bay State Hospital under police guard. The incident had reportedly taken place between 16:00 and 18:00. According to the victim’s siblings, Alupe and Petrus were telephonically in contact before the incident,
and during this conversation Alupe ended their romantic relationship. A while later, Petrus asked Alupe to accompany him to the beach, seemingly to discuss their relationship. Hours later, Alupe's siblings were notified that their sister’s lifeless body had been found near Kuisebmond Beach, with fatal gunshot wounds. No ID number on Voters Registration Cards? Sharlien Tjambari
There is about 14 days left before the Presidential and National Assembly Elections and a lot of people do not know the voting procedures and do not have voters’ registration cards. A reader of the namib times and a resident of Swakopmund raised suspicions about voters’ registration cards without full ID numbers. The card has only the birth date of the voter’ where the ID number is supposed to be and she suspected that the voters’ registration card is not valid. Namib times have done some follow-up research about it and enquired why some voters’ registration cards do not carry full ID numbers. The newspaper spoke to Mrs Hango of the Electoral Commission of Namibia who said there is no problem with the voters’ regis-

Walvis Bay’s population to explode Marshallino Beukes
House prices to escalate further
According to recent census statistics, the town of Walvis Bay’s population will increase, from the current approximately 80 000, to more than 170 000 in 2030. With the pressure rising on the backlog and unaffordability of housing at the coast, this boom will surely increase pressure on the Government and local authorities. At a recent business breakfast meeting, regarding the new SADC Gateway Port in Walvis Bay, Mr Matthew Mirecki from the Economic Association of Namibia, warned that house prices would also rise, as a direct effect of this new development. “House prices are current-
ly a hot topic and precautionary measures must be taken early. Planning is essential and immediate action must be taken” was Mirecki’s advice. House prises in Namibia are in the spotlight, after having increased by almost 30 percent last year, putting the country second on the list of the highest house prices, worldwide. Dubai currently occupies the first position. Prices have already risen by 16% in the first six months of this year. At the
same meeting, Mr Clive Smith, the Project Manager of the Logistics Hub at the Walvis Bay Corridor Group, noted that Namibia could play a much bigger role in the transport sector, offering services to landlocked countries. According to Smith landlocked countries in Southern Africa currently have a need for the transportation of 6.8 million tonnes of cargo per annum. The harbour at Walvis Bay currently handles only 11% of this cargo, with the port
of Durban in South Africa controlling 33% of the inand exports. Angola was described by Smith as a “sleeping giant”, as that northern neighbour also had the capability and infrastructure to contract a big piece of the Southern Africa import/export pie. Mr Smith noted that the scheduled plans to develop the new N$30 billion Port were well underway and that the first phase of this humongous project was expected to commence early next year, one year
Mr Matthew Mirecki ahead of schedule. Mr Rod Braby of the Namibian Coastal Conservation and Management Project (Nacoma) warned that the development could have serious environmental implications that might adversely affect Namibia’s tourism industry.

CHINA Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC), to whom the contract has been awarded to expand the container terminal at the port of Walvis Bay at a cost of N$3 billion, on Wednesday afternoon signed a project labour agreement with the Metal and Allied Namibian Workers Union (MANWU) for the construction of the new container terminal. They also claimed that the company had deducted income tax from their salaries although they did not have tax numbers. They also allegedly did not have social security, or provision for food and travel allowances, while their Chinese colleagues were enjoying company transport and free daily meals. At the signing, CHEC deputy project manager Feng Yuanfei admitted
that they had a rough start, regarding labour issues, but that they were making every effort to ensure the project would be completed on schedule and the required standards were applied, to ensure the safety of its workforce and to protect the environment. Yuanfei added, “The employees are central to the success of the project and our company must ensure favourable conditions prevail for all involved.”
Obtaining Fishing
Permits
Obtain a permit from the Namibian Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources (MFMR) to catch fish or dive for crayfish and respect harvesting limitations. WHY? The marine resources are limited and currently some of them are overfished or over collected. It is necessary that everybody uses them wisely and carefully to secure the future harvesting needs by protecting the stock. Quantity/number of marine resources harvestable, minimum size limits of fish and crayfish that can be caught, open season etc. help to manage stocks to avoid the total disappearance of some species in our waters. Do not leave bait or fish on the beach! Either take it home or return it to the sea. This food attracts scavengers like jackals and gulls that prey on other bio-diversity. When you are back home after the holiday, it also inflates the predator population. Where can you get a license for angling, crayfish diving & bait/mussels collection?

The agreement was signed by Yuanfei and MANWU General Secretary Justina Jonas (pictured), in the company of Namport Port Engineer Elzevir Gelderbloem, as well as MANWU and CHEC representatives. This momentous occasion was labelled as a milestone for the project, as good and sound labour relations could make or break the project. The document will serve
as a guiding tool, as it contains principles on human resources procedures and policies. Jonas urged others to follow Namport’s example by being involved in labour matters associated with the project. The project is already at an advanced stage, about 100 Namibians and 200 Chinese workers are busy on the project. This project is the Chinese firm’s first in Namibia.

The signing of this agreement marks the end of the issues between MANWU and CHEC regarding the poor working conditions, as claimed by workers under the employment of CHEC earlier this year. Approximately 80 Namibian workers went on strike in August, claiming that they were not granted permanent appointments, and that they had to re-apply for their jobs on a month-to-month basis.

does not judge and who are we to judge, people who have a problem with gays and lesbians should really start getting a life, it’s a new era and a new generation; there is nothing wrong with the gay community because they are all people just like you
and me. Miriam Madisia: God said, love one another, He didn’t mention any exceptions like, “Only if you’re heterosexual,” I love my friend who turned out to be gay. I will never judge him.
Dear God
(A letter from your son) It has been 26 years since You put me on earth, and still no answers to why I’m defective from birth? You knew that I was different from day number one, but didn’t listen when I begged You to change me, Your son. You made me camp with a voice that got me teased, which till this day broke my heart. Are You pleased? If that wasn’t enough, You made me like guys. An abomination who must be stoned until he dies. If it’s such a big sin why did You make me this way? To be in love with the same sex, but be hated as gay? For years I suppressed and bottled-up how I felt, but still I wish to be free and to loosen the belt. I am always afraid that people might know why, the reason I smile when I am glimpsing at some guy. If they found out, what would their reaction be? Will friends and family accept this new and sinful me? Or will I be exiled and called a faggot or a queer, losing every single person I have ever held dear? Even when things go right and the deed is all done, there’s not even a single guarantee that I’ll ever meet the one. I have always hated myself for being this way. Why would someone ever choose to be gay? Coming out resorts to a life full of rejection, a sickness they say, that needs an intervention. Every night I beg and pray to be different the next day, and each morning I wake up, I’m all alone and still gay. My big secret is nothing but a burden and curse, eating away at my soul that makes me feel even worse. I will ultimately be forced to make one of two choices. Accept who I am and deal with the judging voices, or choose to bury the truth and just cut it loose. Which soon might end with a gun, or even a noose... If only the world was different and more accepting of me, what a great place it would have been destined to be. But alas I am faced with a reality of two choices Deny or accept and be faced with the judging voices... Anonymous
Gelukkige Bewoner

Go join the fun… FNB did it! Sharlien Tjambari The Community Skills Development Foundation (COSDEF) is having a historic event today. The Millennium Challenge Account Namibia (MCA-N) is officially handing over the new Swakopmund facilities to COSDEF’s Chairperson, Mr Nahas Hangula.
“COSDEF has been proud beneficiaries of MCA-N funding,” says the Executive Manager of COSDEF, Jeremy Muller. The new centre will be open to the public all day for centre viewing and will include music, a fashion show and dance, showcasing all activities at the centre. The centre will also be open tomorrow, from 10:00 to 18:00 with music and a Christmas market. “The new COSDEF Arts & Craft Centre in Swakopmund will aim to serve as a selling outlet for arts and craft products made by
local producers around the country. Training will still also be a main activity with introducing more Fine Art courses alongside longer craft courses. We also envision in the following years, to introduce Graphic Design courses. Music and Entertainment will also eventually feature at the new centre with storytelling, drama and ‘good’ local music, and the coffee shop will fill your hungry bellies with yummy traditional Nam food,” added Mr Muller. The National Arts & Crafts Project started in
2009, as an initiative of the Community Skills Development Foundation, with the mission of training unemployed youth and previously disadvantaged groups, to assist in creating self-employment and skills development and marketing support nationwide. COSDEF is a registered Trust coordinating, supporting and supervising the various Community Skills Development Centres (COSDECs) and other training providers that offer competency based skills training to various communities throughout Namibia.

According to FNB management, their choice of charity entails collecting goods (food, clothes, etc) which will be handed out to anyone in need over a pe-

Desert Rose Project - Treatment of Interested and Affected Parties This is the text of the e-mail sent to the Proponents of the Desert Rose Project and also copied to the Environmental Commissioner:
Mr. F. Schoeman The Legal Advisor, Desert Rose Project Swakopmund by e-mail: legal@nehc.co.za 11 November 2014 Dear Sir, Your e-mail of 10 November 2014 sent to Interested and Affected Parties This e-mail is not to discuss or pronounce on the development as such. It is rather to convey to you our shock and disbelief in how Interested and Affected Parties (I&APs) have been and are still being treated, especially lately by way of your e-mail of 10 November 2014.

Your actions do not instil confidence in the bona fides of the process. The diagrams in the various reports and appendices were printed at such a low resolution that the legends and description are barely readable. This is specifically a problem for the proposed land use diagram. But what becomes clear, is that the area to be developed encompasses the entire landmass between Long Beach and the south wall (where the dunes come close to the road near Vierkantklip) - an obviously much larger area than anticipated from previous pronouncements by the developer. If this is indeed the case then the concept on which registered I&APs have commented has been changed. Yet another example of trying to lead them by the nose. Let them think one thing while doing something completely different. This being the reality then a strong and valid case can be made out that the IA&Ps and the public at large have been misled with the consequential result that your whole process conveys false and misleading information rending it invalid and useless. No one who takes the laws and legislative prescriptions of this country serious can associate himself with your action to marginalize I&APs. Since the Environment Commissioner is or will be directly involved in this matter at some stage or another a copy of this e-mail is being sent to him for his awareness of the issues herein brought to your attention.

The Erongo Regional Road Safety Forum (ERRSF) which is supported by the National Road Council is having a commemoration today, of Africa Road Safety Day. The African Union decided in 2012 to turn World Remembrance Day into the African Road Safety Day, to be commemorated on the third Sunday of November across the continent. A street march from Woermann Brock, Mondesa, along Independence Street to the open space next to the Swakopmund Constituency office, and taking the Road Safety Pledge, are activities high on the agenda today in the run-up to Africa Road Safety day.
The ERRSF will also be campaigning for road safety for the festive season, under the banner of “I Pledge to Arrive Alive”. During the ERRSF mini conference that was held last week, Governor Cleophas Mutjavikua said he was worried about the future of Namibia. “Our country is known for tourist attractions and if we have so many accidents on our roads, tourists will not come to our country anymore.” Namib times will have more on today's event in Tuesday's edition.

Franco brings you Latino Sound Staff Reporter
The second album of Franco Sivori, a local artist (originally from Italy),is now available in Namibian stores. He contacted the namib times to share with the community how his musical career is developing. “I am very happy to be back in Walvis Bay. I performed at a few places in Italy and also promoted another Italian musician while I was there.” His performance can be viewed on YouTube and is called ‘mauro fuggetta gabylo’. Franco’s CD is called ‘Latino Sound’, containing international hits. “The songs have a Santana-like style to it. It is my favourite guitar-style. It contains Portuguese, Italian, Spanish and English songs,” he said. Franco recently started a joint venture with local artist George Van Straten, known for the good music he produces. They performed together at the Octoberfest in Walvis Bay. He mentioned that he would like to enlarge his band even more. “I know
a very good guitarist and singer known as Madelaine. I hope she will join us. I enjoy being free to play my instrument accompanied by a good voice. It gives me more freedom for my guitar performances,” he said. According to Franco they are looking forward to their performances during the summer season. Franco, who also gives guitar and keyboard lessons, was born in Genova in 1955 and learned music while attending high school. He started making music at the age of 13 and today, 46 years later, he is still involved in music – an indication of his passion for music. The first instrument he laid his hands on was the guitar. Franco’s first demo copy is called “It’s time to rock” containing tracks of Dire Straits, Eric Clapton, Neil Diamond and many more. It is also available in music stores.

The equity market has been on a roller coaster ride over the past month with various market analysts looking at the recent correction as a good buy-in opportunity. The continued downward trend in the price of Brent Crude is helping to keep inflation within the target band. The SARB has downwardly revised growth forecasts to 1.5% for 2014, and 2.8% for 2015.
· Commodities Brent Crude is trading at its lowest level in 4 years due to depressed demand (especially from China) and abundant supply. Gold prices are slightly up as the USD weakened and global uncertainty prevails. Commodity and resources prices suffered a heavy drop through October due to weak demand from China. In Conclusion: Moving into the last quarter of the year, expectations are va-
ried. A well-diversified portfolio helps investors to hedge against unforeseen economic and market turns. Investment Consultant, Michele Arnold, BCom (Honours in Risk Management) (North-West University) contributed to this article.
Available at the following A very volatile October has definitely impacted portfolio returns. However, only one of our portfolios did not manage to beat its benchmark. On the side of the safer portfolios, negative economic outlook (both global and local) took its toll on bonds, bringing the 12 month returns figures down for these portfolios. The Conservative + portfolio just missed its benchmark of 8% as it returned 7.8% for the period. The Cautious portfolio returned 8.9% (over a benchmark of 8.5%), and the Cautious + returned 9.9% (over a bench-mark of 9%). The corrections in the local and global equity markets have dampened riskier portfolio returns.
The Moderate portfolio returned 10.6% (over a benchmark of 9.5%), the Moderate + obtained 11.2% returns (over a benchmark of 10%), and the Assertive portfolio managed to reach 11.8% returns (over a benchmark of 10.5%). Investors have not been surprised by the correction in the equity markets and the volatility that comes along with Black October. Portfolios (ours included) have been rebalanced to adapt to new information and circumstances in the global economy. Now that the month has ended, there is hope for slightly more stability in the markets. Valuations and Risks: · US The third quarter has revealed strong company earnings reports in the US, adding
positive sentiment to the economy. The equity market has corrected in the past month, and general expectations for the near future are mostly positive. Housing purchases have increased and inflation is at an acceptable level (1.7%). The Fed is expected to bring an end to its bond purchasing programme within the next quarter, but interest rate are expected to stay low into 2015. US GDP grew 3.5% in the last quarter. · EU Europe is still struggling with a stagnant economy and deflation (inflation at 0.3%), and the European Central Bank (ECB) continues attempting to relieve the economy through bond purchasing programmes and low interest rates
(at 0.05%). The stock market is finally looking up after a month of vast volatility. · ASIA Japan's equity market is up, and the Central Bank continues to support the economy with 0% interest rates. A weaker Yen is lifting overall market sentiment. China's growth has slowed to 7.3% p.a. from a previous 7.5% p.a. China is still going slow and their depressed demand for commodities and resources is weighing on the relevant share prices. The new Mercedes-Benz C-Class Estate As multifaceted as modern life
Mercedes-Benz is expanding the C-Class family with the new Estate.
The Estate stands out with its clear sporty design, innovative technology, variability and a load capacity enlarged even beyond that of the predecessor model. Its high-class, sophisticated interior makes modern luxury tangible with design highlights. With these qualities the Estate reinforces its reputation as a multifaceted lifestyle vehicle with outstanding properties for everyday use. In addition, with its many new assistance systems it not only offers the highest standards of safety, but thanks to intelligent lightweight construction, exceptional aerodynamics and new economical engines it also sets new efficiency benchmarks in its segment. The new C-Class Estate combines a striking, dynamic design and highclass appointments with outstanding variability and a high level of utility. With its versatility it also adapts to a wide variety of requirements. As a stylish, sporty,
spacious vehicle it accompanies active, modern people on shopping sprees, on vacation or when playing sports, and is suitable for families in every respect. Consequently, it continues the tradition of the C-Class Estates, which all in their own time combined demands on lifestyle, sportiness and practicality in an estate car on a new level. "The new C-Class Estate is extremely practical thanks to its enlarged, variable load compartment. With innovative lightweight construction and its stateof-the-art technical features it sets the benchmark with regards to safety, efficiency and comfort. We are the first premium manufacturer to offer a comfortable air suspension in this segment, giving all drivers noticeably more driving enjoyment," says Selvin Govender, Marketing Director, MercedesBenz Cars. Variable and practical The dimensions of the new C-Class Estate have
grown considerably. With an 80-millimetre increase in the wheelbase (2840 millimetres) compared with the previous model, the vehicle is 96 millimetres longer (4702 millimetres) and 40 millimetres wider (1810 millimetres). The resulting increase in space primarily benefits the rear-seat passengers, who now enjoy 45 millimetres more leg-room. Dynamic and high-quality The new C-Class sets visual highlights with a modern, dynamic design that at the same time exudes sensual purity, arouses emotions and, to top it all off, stages high tech in perfect fashion. Customers can choose from two fronts - with the sports grille or - reserved solely for the EXCLUSIVE line with the luxury grille with the Mercedes-Benz star on the bonnet. Touchpad and head-up display The touchpad in the new C-Class Estate developed by Mercedes-Benz marks an evolutionary step. As on
14 NOVEMBER 2014 a smartphone, all the head unit functions can be operated using finger gestures. The 65 x 45 millimetre control surface of the touchpad is built into the handrest on the central control panel and bordered by a high-quality metal support - a design feature with a high-tech feel which exudes luxury at the same time. A head-up display is also a new feature in the C-Class Estate. As in a jet fighter, it projects important information directly into the driver's field of vision, ensuring that there is less distraction from the road ahead. The system provides information on vehicle speed, posted speed limits, navigation instructions and DISTRONIC messages. Less weight, more comfort Thanks to innovative solutions, the bodyshell of the new C-Class Estate weighs less, provides the basis for outstanding vehicle handling and best noise and vibration comfort with exceptional rigidity, and offers a high level of crash safety. With an aluminium content of 49 percent and up to 65 kilograms less gross vehicle weight the Estate is the lightweight-construction leader in its segment. Efficient and lively engines The powerful and efficient petrol and diesel engines with ECO start/stop function comply with the Euro 6 emissions standards and ensure sporty performance and driving pleasure. Compared with the predecessor certain members of the lineup consume in excess of 20 percent less fuel. The diesel model of the new C-Class Estate is equipped with SCR (selective catalytic reduction) technology. The C-Class Estate range includes two BlueDIRECT four-cylinder petrol engines with power outputs from 115 kW to 135 kW for the C 180 and C 200 respectively and one BlueTEC four-cylinder diesel engine with 150 kW of power for the C 250 BlueTEC. Agile and comfortable driving Exemplary suspension comfort and road roar and tyre vibration characteristics coupled with outstanding dynamic vehicle handling - these are the hallmarks of the newly designed suspension of the new C-Class Estate. Thanks to a new four-link front axle it offers driving pleasure and ride comfort at the same time. C-Class Estate customers will have a choice of two versions of the standard-specification steel suspension, which also includes a sporty set-up. As an alternative, Mercedes-Benz for the first time offers an air suspension in this segment. The AIRMATIC air suspension manages to bridge the gap between a high level of ride comfort and dynamic, agile handling. AIRMATIC also features all-round self-levelling for optimum ride comfort even with the vehicle loaded. Choose your own driving experience In the new C-Class Estate the driver can determine the individual driving experience at the push of a button. Depending on the equipment level, the driver can choose from various preconfigured drive programmes and one the driver

MOTORING can design personally to a large extent. The following characteristics are available: "Comfort", "ECO", "Sport" and "Sport+". The additional "Individual" setting enables drivers to configure their vehicle to suit their own preferences. Like the sedan, the new C-Class Estate is equipped with an electric parking brake. This brake is released automatically when the driver ends parking mode with the aim of moving off. Steering with a sporty character All models of the C-Class family will feature an electromechanical Direct-Steer system as standard from now on. This combines speed-sensitive servo assistance from the speed-sensitive steering with a steering ratio that varies with the given steering angle. The power steering assistance provided by the rack-andpinion steering gear is controlled as needed, thereby contributing towards efficiency. Airbags for safety In addition to three-point seat belts with pyrotechnical belt tensioning and belt force limiters for driver, front passenger and those in the outer rear seats, numerous airbags serve to protect the vehicle's occupants in an accident. Air conditioning: signals from space The further advanced climate control system provides improved control quality, performance, efficiency and air quality. The new Estate is the only vehicle in the segment to offer tunnel detection via satellite navigation. It uses the map data from the navigation system and the GPS location data to close the air
recirculation flap automatically when the vehicle enters a tunnel, subsequently re-opening it when the vehicle emerges from the tunnel. Another highlight contributing to a feel-good atmosphere is the AIR-BALANCE package with active fragrancing, air ionisation and more efficient filtration than is available on the standard model. Vibrant infotainment experience Like the seda , the new Estate also offers a completely new multimedia generation with intuitive operation, featuring elaborate animations and visual effects which present all the functions in a clear and highly attractive manner. The Estate is furthermore also equipped with the Frontbass system. This avant-garde acoustic system uses the space within the cross-member and side member in the body structure as a resonance chamber for the woofers. The result is a listening experience almost on a par with that enjoyed in a concert hall. A Burmester® surround sound system is optionally available. The navigation system presents its contents in interactive mode. Its features include an animated compass, a "Drive Show" with information for passengers similar to the on-screen presentations on board airliners and Google Maps displayed on the head unit. COMAND Online is now also able to provide more accurate real-time information about the situation on the roads when it receives its traffic data via the internet by means of the "Live Traffic Information" service. Internet and diverse data sources
A Bluetooth®-compatible mobile phone with data option is all it takes to make even the Audio 20 system internet-capable. This enables the internet to be surfed without restrictions when the vehicle is stationary. In conjunction with COMAND Online, MercedesBenz Apps such as Weather, GoogleTM Local Search with StreetView and Panoramio, destination/route download and Facebook can be used while on the move. Audio and video playback is possible from various sources, for example, via Bluetooth®, from an Apple iPod® or iPhone®, from an SD card, USB stick or CD/DVD (with Audio 20 CD and with COMAND Online). COMAND Online with hotspot functionality COMAND Online not only offers a larger display with a resolution of 960 x 540
pixels and a special bonded glass cover such as is familiar from consumer devices like the iPhone® or iPad. It also offers information on automatic tailback avoidance via up-to-date and accurate "Live Traffic Information", integrated WLAN hotspot functionality and the LINGUATRONIC voice-operated control system. Telephony via Bluetooth® as standard The standard-fit Audio 20 CD and COMAND Online all offer basic telephony as standard, which links up a mobile phone to the vehicle via a standardised Bluetooth® interface. Value proposition As with all Mercedes-Benz passenger cars, the C-Class Estate comes standard with a 6-year/100 000 km PremiumDrive maintenance plan, with no customer contribution.

THOUGHT OF THE DAY FRIDAY 14 NOVEMBER “Losing your life in Jesus” Whoever seeks to preserve his life will lose it, but whoever loses will save it. Luke 17:33 SATURDAY 15 NOVEMBER “Entrusting Our Concerns to God” Jesus told his disciples a parable about the necessity for them to pray always without becoming weary... “Because this widow keeps bothering me shall deliver a lest decision for her lest she finally come and strike me.” Luke 18: 1,5 SUNDAY 16 NOVEMBER “Hope Filled Witness She reaches out her hands to the poor and extend her arms to the needy. Proverbs 31:20 MONDAY 17 NOVEMBER “Only God Can Make a Tree” He is like a tree Planted near running water... Psalm 1:3 TUESDAY 18 NOVEMBER “Making the move” But Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, “Behold, half of my possessions, Lord, I shall give to the poor, and if I have extorted anything from anyone I shall repay it four times over.” Luke 19:8 Holy Spirit, shine your light on my darkness and help me find the right path.

Sports journalists awarded At the recent sports awards four sports journalists were awarded for their reporting and commitment towards sport in Namibia.
These awards and the prize money, sponsored by FNB Namibia, went to Helge Schutz of the Namibian as Digital Sport Journalist of the year for Namibia Sport, Hector Mawonga of the Namibian Sun for print sport media, Lesley Tjiueza of NBC for sport on TV and Kavi Vezemburuka of NBC for sport on radio. Hector Mawonga said he was pleasantly surprised about the award. He said: “It is humbling when your peers recognise your efforts and it makes you realise just how many see your hard work, even though you are often not aware of it.” His sport highlight of the year was Namibia's qualification for the Rugby World Cup, especially given the odds they faced after losing their first match at the qualifying tournament in Madagascar. The greatest challenge he faces in his career is the fact that he is required to know a lot about many different sport codes. “At times one is not able to properly delve into the issues affecting a particular code because you have to focus on so many different codes.” His advice to people wishing to become a sport journalist: “You should do this, only if you love sports because more often than not you'll be required to cover events on weekends and after hours. But you must also make sure you have the necessary skills that will help you along the way, so you must invest in yourself by reading, watching or listening to how the professionals do it.” Helge Schutz of the Namibian newspaper said he was very surprised as he had not been aware that there was a category for Digital Sport Journalist of the Year. “I feel honoured and I would like to thank the sponsors for awarding this prize. It makes me feel that my hard work is being appreciated.” To Helge the African Women's Soccer Championship was the highlight of the year. He says: “The tournament was well organised and there were huge crowds at Namibia's matches - the biggest in many years. Namibia's rugby team qualifying for the Rugby World Cup was another highlight.” About his career: “For sports journalism and especially digital sport journalism one has to work around the clock to keep your website updated. There is always news or something happening and you have a duty to keep your readers updated. One must therefore be totally committed to providing a professional service.”

The Hackers Doubles Squash League was played weekly from 3 September, with the final round played recently. The mixed teams were made up of 1 weaker player and 1 stronger player to even the team strengths, creating a more enjoyable and balanced draw. Regular handicaps/ rules were also given to nomi-
nated players to give the weaker players (Hac-kers) a chance of getting more involved in the game. The opening round deci-ded the split of the teams into two sections. Each section played a round robin at the muni-
cipal courts, with a final round that was played at Buccaneers Squash Club, where the prize giving function followed afterwards. After the word of thanks was made, prizes were handed out and everyone
pre-sent sat down to a well enjoyed meal. The results ended as follows: A Section: 1st Zola Nel & Patrick Quinn; 2nd Wendy Smith & Jakkie Nel. B Section: 1st Berdina Geel & Raymond Duvenhage; 2nd Charlene von

(Fltr) Dietrich Möwes, Darren Strauss (Runner-up), PW Steenkamp (Winner), Reinhardt Stanley (NTTA Chairman) and Conwin van Wyk
Surprise winner at Open Table Tennis Championships The Namibian Table Tennis Association held its annual Windhoek Open Championship last weekend and Swakopmunder, Darren Strauss also competed. One of Namibia’s brightest young talents, PW Steenkamp, who travelled from Stampriet to the capital with plenty of confidence after his school’s win at the Inter-School championship a fortnight ago, was the surprise winner of the junior u/18 boys division. He faced the number one ranked junior and national player Darren Strauss (Westside High School)
in the singles final, after a narrow 3-2 win against number 2 seed, Dietrich Möwes (DHPS). Strauss had so far enjoyed a majority of tournament wins throughout the season and it seemed that the Windhoek Open title was going to have his name engraved on it as well after he won the first game with 12:10. Against all odds, Steenkamp overcame the bad start and put in all efforts
for an impressive comeback. Time and time again he won vital points against his highly favored opponent. Strauss couldn’t find an answer to Steenkamp’s onslaught, losing the next three sets with 6:11, 7:11 and 5:11. Dietrich Möwes and Conwin van Wyk collected third place bronze medals. Steenkamp and Strauss then teamed up for the u/18 boys doubles. In the
finals they faced Conwin van Wyk and Ronaldo Vogel (Rehoboth High School). The latter had no response for the consistent play by Strauss and Steenkamp and had to settle for silver. Bronze was won by Dietrich Möwes and Andi Fechter (DHPS). Andreas Fechter won the u/18 boys category with Maurise Kunz in second, in an all-DHPS final.
