The first Walvis Bay resident to have been moving into a house in the newly constructed suburb of Narraville in Walvis Bay in 1962 was Mr. Bertie Langenhoven and his spouse. The couple moved into their house in October 1962. The house is still owned by the Langenhovens today. To honour this occasion in 1962, Mermaid Street in Narraville was renamed Langenhoven Street on Friday to honour the Langenhoven couple and the contributions they made to the Walvis Bay communities over many decades. of all Namibian harvested hake and also 70 % of harvested horse mackerel, the Minister explained in his keynote address. Also present at the ceremony was the Chairman of the O&L Group Sven Thieme and the Managing Director of Hangana Seafood Herman Theron. Hangana Seafood is a subsidiary of O&L Group. Namibia currently processes [or value adds] around 120 000 metric tons locally. Although that already represents the 70 % target on hake, there is still much work to do to achieve this percentage for horse mackerel. Currently, only 10 % of horse mackerel is value added in Namibia. According to the Minister the predictions of doom profits, that horse mackerel cannot be value added, has been proven wrong and that value adding on fish resources is the new norm. Value adding creates jobs and creates a higher value product which earns more export income to Namibia, explained Esau. (See pictures of the ground breaking on page 5).

At the time of going to press yesterday it was confirmed that some of the Region’s best investigating officers were at the scene of the killings yesterday. Evidence was gathered, but at the time of going to press the Police remained tight lipped over what they knew.

Fire Brigade training dumbfounds residents Swakopmund residents were recently alerted to this huge pile of smoke near town, prompting calls to the Fire Brigade. Some even drove to the scene in an effort to learn more of what was going on. They were assured that the fire was perfectly harmless in that it was actually members of the fire brigade undergoing firefighting training to keep their skills tip top. Firefighting training, apart from this particular event, are usually conducted on the premises of the Fire Brigade in Swakomund’s Rakotoka Street. Well done lads - keep up the good work!

The annual Spur T20 Social League hosted by the Junior Coastal Cricket Academy (JCCA) will start on 8 June with the traditional 5 over's 8-a-side at the Sparta Oval in Walvis Bay. The main aim of the Spur Social League is not only to play social cricket, but also to develop the game, players, umpires as well as scorers. JCCA will once again make use of junior qualified umpires, and there will be a training cores for scorers. Kindly contact me should you have persons interested in the scoring course. I am proud to announce that 2 scorers were successfully trained during the 2018 Spur Social League. Teams from Windhoek are welcome to enter. The organisers will adjust the fixture to accommodate Windhoek teams not to travel each weekend, but rather travel 2 weekends (excluding the 5 overs 8-a-side and finals) and play 4 games per weekend. Nolene Winborn from JCCA said "We have quite a few surprises lined up for this season with one of the surprises lined up is that the team ending 1st on the log will NOT play semi-finals, they will automatically proceed to the finals. Teams ending 2nd – 5th on the log will play it out in play offs, 2nd vs 5th& 3rd vs 4th, with the winners of the play offs will play in a semi-final, which winner will proceed to the final to play against the 1st position on the log". Winborn added that Windhoek team are well come to enter as all the games will be played on weekends only. The closing date for entries are 30 April 2019 with the opening ceremony on the 7 June at Spur. The first eight teams that register will accepted. Bradley Murere was born on 26 September 2002 in Tsumeb and started his school career in Swakopmund at Namib Primary School. A Grade 10 learner at Namib High School, Murere started running at a very tender age but, only took running seriously when he reached high school. Murere said "The fact that I lost my arm drives me, many people think I cannot compete because of the arm that I lost but I am here to prove a point and I will not stop running as I would like to make athletics my career of choice". For the past three years Murere represented Namibia at various Para athlete events and had profound achievements: In 2017, Murere was awarded a trophy as Best Junior Para Athlete in Windhoek, Namibia when he went for Paralympics for the first time. In 2018, he participated in South Africa as well as Namibia and obtained 2 Gold medals from the South African Sports Association for the Physically Disabled (SASAPD) National Championships for the 100m and 200m final. He also received an award from the Disability Sports Namibia. During March 2018, Murere participated in World Para Athletics Grand Prix Event which was hosted in Berlin, Germany and received silver for the 200m and a bronze medal for 100m. "Our Swakopmund Community is proud of you Murere, and we congratulate you on your achievement and wish you the very best in all your future endeavours – make Swakopmund as well as Namibia proud" Pauline Nashilundo the Mayor of Swakopmund said while congratulating Murere earlier this month. Murere's aunt Petronella (Murere) /Uiras who was also an athlete said that she was the one who inspired Murere. "Bradley was more into soccer but, I realised he could do more, so I encouraged him to start running as I was an athlete and so was my father and he started of very well and we are very proud of him" Petronella added.

Namibia returns to SA provincial scene

Rudi Bowe

South Africa Rugby has welcomed an Argentina XV, Namibian and Zimbabwean teams back to the 2019 provincial rugby scene to provide a strong international flavour to South Africa's senior rugby landscape. The Namibia Rugby Union and Namibian Rugby Company welcomed the invitation from SA Rugby but the participation of Namibian in the South African provincial rugby scene still needs to be confirmed as the team's main sponsor the Namibia Breweries (NBL) should still be tied up, while ensuring that World Cup commitments do not interfere with Namibian participation. The Namibian Welwitschias and Argentina XV will bolstered the Currie Cup First Division that will feature eight teams in an action-packed tournament with defending champions SWD, Boland, the Griffons, Valke, Leopards and Eastern Province. The Currie Cup First Division will be split into two sections 'North and South' with the top two teams from each section progressing to the semifinals. The Welwitschias is been draw with the Leopards, Valke, Golden Lions, Blue Bulls, ISG Pumas, Griffons and Griquas in the North section with

Zimbabwe, WP, the Boland Cavaliers, SWD Eagles, Eastern Province, the Sharks and Free State Cheetahs will battle it out in the South section,. SA Rugby CEO Jurie Roux said "The introduction of the Argentina XV and the return of Namibia to the Currie Cup First Division will add an exciting element to the competition in 2019 and we have no doubt that it will boost the tournament and we are excited to welcome back Namibia, who have delivered a number of competitive performances in the competition in the past." Namibian will play; April 27: Golden Lions in Windhoek. May 4: Blue Bulls at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria. May 11: Griquas in Windhoek. May 18: Griffons at Rustenburg. May 25: Leopards in Windhoek. June 1: Pumas in Mbombela Stadium, Nelspruit. June 8: Falcons in Windhoek.

It is the first time the expanded 24-team tournament will be held in the summer months from 21 June to 19 July in an attempt to alleviate club-versus-country battles that have marred previous editions. The top two teams in each of the six groups advance to the second round, along with the four best third-placed sides. Group D which has been dubbed the 'group of death' features Morocco, South Africa, Ivory Coast, South Africa and Minnows Namibia. Namibia and South Africa who won the Afcon cup in 1996 will renew hostilities after the duo were pitted against each other in the 1998 Nations Cup. The Brave Warriors also have to face off against fellow Afcon winners Morocco who have won the cup on one occasion and Cote d'Ivoire who have won the tournament on two occasions with their last victory coming in 2015 with the Morocco coach Herve Renard. It is only the third time that Namibia qualify for the Afcon finals, following their maiden appearance in 1998 and 2008. The group, with the exception of Morocco's Atlas Lions, is an almost exact nostalgic replica of the 1998 African Nations Cup group during Namibia's maiden appearance at the continental showpiece. Angola was the fourth team in the group that year. Brave Warriors coach Ricardo Mannetti said "Perfect draw for the underdogs. They will not focus on us but on themselves and this is exactly where I want to be." Brave Warriors assistant coach Ronnie Kanalelo said "We will disturb the momentum and we will cause an upset." Namibia will play their opening group game against Morocco on 23 June than Bafana Bafana on 28 June and their last group game on 1 July against Ivory Coast. Afcon 2019 group-stage draw: Group A: Egypt, Zimbabwe, DR Congo, Uganda Group B: Burundi, Madagascar, Guinea, Nigeria Group C: Tanzania, Algeria, Kenya, Senegal Group D: South Africa, Namibia, Cote d'Ivoire, Morocco Group E: Angola, Mauritania, Mali, Tunisia Group F: Guinea-Bissau, Benin, Ghana, Cameroon
