The pilot who recently executed an emergency landing with a Cessna 210 (V5-JET) owned by Scenic Air, reportedly admitted to air accident investigators she fell asleep behind the controls leading to this latest air incident. The pilot was identified as Shannon Duff. The pilot's admission followed after the Deputy Director of Aircraft Accident Investigation, Theo Shilongo, had second thoughts after not finding Duff's initial version of events credible. Duff made an emergency landing just after 15:00 on 5 August this year north of Henties Bay. The plane took off from the airstrip at Doro Nawas Camp in Damaraland, close to Twyfelfontein, head-
ing for Swakopmund. According to the pilot, Shannon Duff, she heard a “loud bang” and the propeller stopped. She then attempted to restart the engine and eventually managed to get the engine going again. There was no power to control the pitch, which is why she sent out a “May-Day” distress call and took the decision to make an emergency landing. The pilot climbed on a hilltop after the emergency landing, where she lit a fire to attract
attention. Emergency services were dispatched to the scene, but no injuries were reported. “After investigating the aircraft, it became apparent that the aircraft impacted the ground with its propeller first and only then the belly of the aircraft. The aircraft lifted and only then the landing gear deployed. The investigating team also found that the true impact spot was not near where the pilot

Shannon Duff initially indicated. When we started asking questions again, as I was not happy with the initial answers she
provided, she said she could not remember much. It was only after I continued questioning her
when she admitted she had fallen asleep behind the controls,” Shilongo commented on the new findings.

Floris Steenkamp The Namibian fishing sector earned an estimated N$10 billion in revenues from the landings of 550 000 metric tons of fish in the 2014/15 fishing year. In addition the industry provided 15 000 direct jobs over the same period and sustained a further 45 000 indirect jobs in supplies to fishing vessels, stevedoring activities, logistics and other related marketing and trade activities. Simultaneously, Government revenues from taxes, levies and tariffs also increased. The annual National Fish Consumption Day will be hosted on 30
September and 1 October this year at Ongwediva in the Oshana Region. Minister Esau hailed the successes of the NFCPT to raise the profile of this event every year. National Fish Consumption Day aims to promote fish consumption among Namibians, in line with the NFCPT’s mandate. Related article: page 2
