Konrad Woermann was born on 29 April 1931. He was a pioneer in the Namibian business community when he took charge of the management of Woermann, Brock & Co. Under his leadership the chain of supermarkets across the country were extended and more branches were opened in various parts of the capital. Woermann was also a driving force of the business in Independence Continues on Page 2
Erwin Leuschner An inflatable boat with a crew of five capsized in the Mole in Swakopmund on Friday afternoon. All persons managed to swim to shore where they were attended to by various emergency rescue services. The inflatable boat “Nanna” capsized after a rogue wave submerged the boat as it was entering the Mole upon return from the fishing grounds near Vierkantklip. “There was not much I could do. The wave washed over the back and killed the engine,” explained the relieved owner of the inflatable boat, John Smith, to namib times at the scene. Accompanied by four fishermen Smit went out the same morning to catch cob. “The catches weren't too great,” he said. They were fishing west of the Vierkantklip. The sea was especially rough as it was full moon only two days before. In Swakopmund the fog was heavy with very limited visibility. As Smith was entering the Mole at about 15:00 a rogue Continues on Page 2

Continued from Page 1 Avenue, which was enlarged in the early 1990's and turned into a modern supermarket. The history Woermann, Brock & Co. dates back to October 1894, when the “Damara & Namaqua Handelsgesellschaft mbH” was established in Hamburg to carry on trade in the German colony of South West Africa. During 1913 the business was subdivided for general goods, a technical division, an agricultural division and a mining division. In Swakopmund, the company erected the wellknown “Woermann Haus” and the “Damara Turm” as well as the first power station in Southern Africa. The outbreak of the First World War on 1 August 1914 interrupted all these activities, as the shipping of supplies from Germany became impossible. The mother company in Hamburg had lost a large part of its capital and only the branches in Swakopmund and Windhoek continued to operate, albeit at a very modest level. With the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939 the administration of the company was taken over by the Custodian of Enemy Property, almost resulting in the total collapse of the company. Following the end of the war, Wilhelm Brock took charge of the company in Swakopmund and Willem Engberts in Windhoek. It was thanks to resourceful men such as Ascan Woermann, Wilhelm Brock, Emil Heinrichsen, Willem Engberts, Erich Woermann and Wilfred Matheis that Woermann, Brock & Co. continued to exist. After separating their capital from the mother company in Hamburg, they energetically went about reconstructing the business. In 1950 Kurt Schmerenbeck in co-operation with Ascan and Erich Woermann built the August Schmerenbeck Haus in Independence Avenue, where in 1966 a supermarket with just three tills was opened. Woermann, Brock & Co. was the second business in Windhoek to offer self-service shopping at the time. Clients were intrigued by being able to collect their shopping items from the shelves. Konrad Woermann took charge of the management of Woermann, Brock & Co in 1960. He greatly expanded the company and was a pioneer in the Namibian business community. In 1998 he entrusted the management to his sons Jesko and Ingo Woermann. In 2001 he retired due to failing health. After his retirement Konrad Woermann and his wife Gabi stayed in their home situated close to the Woermann-Haus in Swakopmund. He continued to play a big part in the community, despite having suffered from a stroke which left him partially paralysed. His wife is still an active player in the business.
Construction of new C.H.A.I.N. offices and classrooms finally commences Erwin Leuschner For 20 handicapped children in Swakopmund the long wait is finally over: The organization C.H.A.I.N. (Children with Handicaps Action in Namibia) commenced with the construction of their new home this week. The ground-breaking ceremony took place on Tuesday. “We have really been waiting for a very long time for this day and are overly happy that at last we can start with the construction,” said C.H.A.I.N. Vice-Chairperson Bruni Tholkes. The new premises are located in Franziska Van Neel Street in Tamariskia. C.H.A.I.N. is a kindergarden-based facility, currently looking after 20 handicapped children. The children are collected from their homes in the morning and are taken to the center, where they follow an educational programme. They are not only taught basic education but also physical movement and mobility, as also receive a well-balanced meal during the day. The history of C.H.A.I.N. dates back to 1992. Initially it were three mothers that started a support system for four children diagnosed with down syndrome. Two years later C.H.A.I.N. moved into the building located next to the Rössing Foundation where they have been operating until this day. “Our current facilities are too small and we urgently needed more space,” said Tholkes. While CHAIN is caring for 20 children, there are 20 more children currently on the waiting list. According to Tholkes C.H.A.I.N. made a deal with the Rössing Foundation, who took over their current building and in turn supplied C.H.A.I.N. with an erf – the same erf on which the construction has now commenced. The new premises consist of a big play/activity room, at least two classrooms, a dining room, a proper kitchen, two offices and a garage. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of the year. This depends though if enough material can be supplied. To complete the new offices CHAIN requires assistance from the community. While the welfare organization has collected some material and money, more is urgently needed. “We require bricks, cement, anything. And you know that any sponsorships will be put to good use,” said Tholkes. The builder is Horst Heiser. C.H.A.I.N. relies solely on private funding and sponsorship by private individuals and businesses. A large portion of the money collected stems from Lore Bohm, a Swakopmund resident actively involved in the community. She has been supporting C.H.A.I.N. since 2003 and managed to get a few sponsors from Germany to come on-board and support the organization. C.H.A.I.N. is an early intervention unit committed to help those who are least able to help themselves. Their motto is to give “Hope to the Handicapped Child” and the aim is to assist the child to be prepared, not just for school, but also for life. “Special children also deserve the best,” said Tholkes.
Inflatable boat capsizes at the Mole Continued from Page 1
wave “appeared out of nowhere” and crashed over the boat's aft. The engine failed immediately. “I knew we would capsize soon. I informed the crew of the situation developing and provided each with a life jacket. I told them should the boat capsize they need to hold onto the boat and only leave the boat and swim ashore once they are in the shallow water”, said Smith. When emergency and rescue services arrived on scene, the capsized boat had drifted close to the black rocks just north of the Mole. Once the boat was about ten meters from shore, the crew took their chances and made a dash for land. They were immediately attended to by the rescue services. “The most important to me is all crew is safe and sound,” Smith said. The crew was transported to hospital where they were treated. A large number of onlookers gathered at the scene, as the sea-drama was unfolding. Some of the fish caught by the crew washed out and was picked up by members of the public. Some of the onlookers also grabbed valuables that washed ashore. Members of the Neighbourhood Watch had to step in and prevent people from stealing the equipment.

NBL CELEBRATES ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL DRINKIQ SESSION An additional 169 Namibians underwent the DRINKiQ Training Program by Namibia Breweries Limited (NBL) - a subsidiary of the Ohlthaver & List (O&L) Group - last week in the south of the country. Employees from NAMDEB's Elizabeth Bay Mine in LĂźderitz, as well as members of the LĂźderitz community were empowered with facts about alcohol and the dangers of alcohol abuse. Since its inception in 2009, NBL's DRINKiQ Training Program has provided more than 4500 Namibians with a better understanding of the short- and longterm effects of alcohol abuse, which thus empowers them to make smart decisions when it comes to the use of alcohol. O&L Group Corporate Social Investment (CSI) Coordinator, Venessa Mwiya: "For the past three months we have trained approximately 600 Namibians under this powerful program that has over the years enriched participants' knowledge on the mental, psychological and physical risks involved when abusing alcohol, and provides them with the necessary IQ to understand the repercussions of alcohol abuse." Mwiya emphasized that the DRINKiQ Program is not only for employees of NBL or the O&L Group, but is open to the general public who wishes to enrich their knowledge on the use of alcohol and how to consume it on a more responsible level. The DRINKiQ Program is part of NBL's contribution to curb the excessive use of alcohol, addressing government's concern of alcohol abuse. Mwiya: "While this program has more focus on internal stakeholders for 2017, we gladly take up opportunities externally, to invest in the future well-being of the Namibian society, through our commitment to the group purpose of 'Creating a future, enhancing life' for all Namibians. With the daily repercussions of alcohol abuse seen in our society, the DRINKiQ Program has the potential to be a powerful tool in the fight against alcohol abuse as it addresses the power of behavioral change. When we change our behavior towards alcohol and how we consume it, it is already a great start to curbing societal concerns." Within the O&L Group alone, the DRINKiQ Program has so far in 2017 been conducted at Namibia Dairies' headquarters in Windhoek; NBL headquarters in Windhoek; Strand Hotel Swakopmund; Hangana Seafood; Pick n Pay (PnP); NBL, and Namibia Dairies at the coast.

An announcement was made by the Knowledge Foundation yesterday morning, of an N$1 million pledge by Knowledge Katti through the foundation in the form of a revolving Fund to assist residents and vulnerable families at the coastal town of Walvis Bay. The funds will be extended as collateral and interest loans, which will be aimed at benefitting the communities of Kuisebmond and Narraville. The main objective of this initiative is to assist in eradicating poverty, therefore beneficiaries can apply for various funding for assistance where finances are lacking. “There are many people in our communities who are pulling themselves up by their bootstraps. However, funding for things such as restocking their shops or acquiring equipment is problematic due to lack of funds. Similarly, there are families facing dire situations of disconnected basic services such as water and electricity. Others are unable to buy shoes or winter clothes for their school going children. This is where the Knowledge Foundation N$1 Million Revolving Fund comes in,” commented Knowledge Katti. The Foundation has chosen local pastors and church leaders to assist in identifying beneficiaries, community members in need are also encouraged to approach the chosen individuals to discuss the assistance they need. The fund will require no fixed payment terms and beneficiaries are expected to repay once they are able to. The fund will also support the implementation of income-generating projects, as well as provide start-up or operational capital for micro enterprises. “I'm extremely happy about this. In fact, we already started helping some families yesterday and today. This is because we believe that there is vast potential to move our communities out of poverty to possibilities and prosperity,” Katti added.

Huge volumes of second hand cars, trucks, mechanised farming equipment and plant are imported via the port of Walvis Bay to neighbouring Zambia and Zimbabwe annually. These vehicle carriers can carry thousands of these units aboard and is a vital link in the chain of second hand vehicle imports from the United Kingdom to Southern Africa. Inflatable boat capsized at the Swakopmund Mole
MANAGER’S SPECIAL
After the inflatable boat “Nanna” capsized in the Mole on Friday the crew held on and waited until the boat washed closer to shore, where they then themselves swam to shore and were rescued. All crew members were treated on scene after successfully making it to shore. Other pictures show: Rescue services pulling the overturned boat onto the beach. The owner of the inflatable boat, John Smith kept his cool during the capsizing and in the process his crew knew exactly what to do to save themselves.

Remnants of ancient railway resurface on beach in the Swakop rivermouth
Two days of water outage The Walvis Bay Municipality Public Relations & Customer Service Division announced in a media statement yesterday that a water outage will take place on Tuesday, 16 May & Wednesday, 17 May. The affected suburbs include Meersig, Fairways, Lagoon and Central Town. Ironically, the outage is due to the construction of a reservoir which will in turn avoid water outages in the future. The media statement reads as follows: “The Municipality is in the process of constructing a 20 Ml portable water reservoir at Mile 7. The aim of the new reservoir is to increase the water availability to Walvis Bay in times of a crisis, for example when infrastructure is damaged due to flooding of the Kuiseb River. The contractor appointed for the project has to construct a new manhole on the 500 mm AC pipe to install a temporary bypass pipe that will eventually facilitate the connection of the new reservoir to the existing network. Therefore, water supply to Walvis Bay via the 500 mm pipe will be disconnected as from Tuesday, 16 May 2017 until latest Wednesday, 17 May 2017. Frieda Sukona Uanongovandu Ndjoze For 2 days!!!! Municipality calls for calm The ongoing housing shortage in Walvis Bay took centre stage recently when shack dwellers attempted to illegally occupy public land in Kuisebmond, which led to a clash with police earlier this week. The municipality urged for these dwellers to remain calm, as they focus on solving the low income housing crisis. The municipality in a media statement explains: “Over the last couple of years the illegal occupation of vacant public land by a number of shack dwellers has become more apparent as people are drawn to major urban areas in search of jobs. In this regard, Walvis Bay has attracted many such people due to its growing economy in terms of increased industrialisation, logistics opportunities, tourism and a promising SME sector, among others. These are in addition to the fishing industry, which has always attracted large num-bers of job seekers. As the demand for housing has increased, and people struggle to find adequate shelter, the number of backyard shack dwellers has also increased exponentially. Due to the exploitative nature associated with rental charges applied to shack dwellers, many have moved out of the backyards and chosen to occupy public land illegally. This has occurred on several occasions in Walvis Bay, with sometimes unpleasant consequences for all concerned. Ilunga Kim Jong-Nam Low income houses isn't the reason, please provide this people with peace of land, the big problem is that this people are staying behind someone's house, and each and every day house owners just tell them the house is sold or 'll build flat move away, if it was you what 'll you do in such situation of no places to build up shacks again Christine Simon Visser Why not give these people a little piece of land for the 1 million dollars mr. Katti donated to this? Personally i think crime
rates will lower if these people have more permanent living conditions. Denise Van Bergen Mr. Katiti donated one million dollars??? Can you give more details about this, please? Cause for Swakop’s fly plague still under investigation The source of the current fly plague of troubling residents of Swakopmund, especially in the northern suburbs of Mile 4 and Ocean View, could not yet be determined with certainty. The municipality is still investigating the cause and is trying to find asolution to the problem. Speaking to the namib times newspaper yesterday, Raubium Ujaha, Environmental Health Practitioner: Waste at the municipal Health Department, said that no definite cause for the plague could be determined yet. “The issue is receiving a high priority,” he added. While flies are not uncommon, the sudden increase over the past few months, especially in the northern suburbs, have become a health concern. Residents of Ocean View and Mile 4 have lodged many complaints, saying they use insecticides but even these show no significant result. Some residents have drawn up a petition addressed to the municipality in an attempt to have the issue resolved. Raini Becker The dump site is TEEMING with flied. Thousands, nothing is under control! And with a slight east wind they WILL be in the northern suburbs. Before I through anything in the rubbish I wash it, turn it upside down to dry and only then through it away, in that way we can
eliminate suitable breeding hotspots. But I imagine most people are to ....... , to Do this. Juergen George Mater There are Billions of Flies on the Dump...Bullshit if They say They Control them.
For the past few weeks Swakopmund residents can only guess about the remnants of an old railway line on the beach at the Swakop river mouth, in the vicinity of the old concrete pillars. The tracks as well as some wooden sleepers surface during low tide and is a source of big curiosity, especially among railway enthusiasts and those interested in the town's rich history. The railway track is believed to be dating from 1915, constructed by the invading Union of South African forces that annexed German South West Africa in that year as part of its colonial commitment to Britain in the First World War. Georg Erb Quite right the concrete columns from 1928, destroyed by floods Jan 1931. The current railway bridge dates back to 1935. There would have been several temporary railway lines even between 1931 and 1935 Charl Laubscher Een foutjie sover ek weet. The mining sector contributes 12.5% to the country's Gross Domestic Product and with an optimistic prediction of it increasing to 15.2% by the year 2022 according to the National Planning Commission it makes it a vital component towards Namibia's socio-economic development. Speaking to this effect, Johannesburg-based Andre Snyders, who is part of Standard Bank's research team, recently addressed the mining fraternity during his visit to Namibia at the recent Mining Expo and Conference under the topic “Reaping the benefits of Mining Investments.” “The years since 2005 have seen some spectacular investments in mining but also some equally noticeable reversal and writedowns. The mismatch between supply and demand is a co-ordination problem,” Snyders warned. He explained that his
aim was to provide a message of better understanding of market coordination and an appreciation that deliberation by communities is an essential foundation for the system of market pricing. Additionally, he also hoped to persuade people that the terms 'risk' and 'uncertainty' should actually have different meanings and should not be used synonymously. “Firms have invested in exploration in mine development and in mining technology on a scale seldom seen in the past 50 years. Railway lines have been built and even new types of ships have been designed to carry raw materials; I have also learned more about the new SS Nujoma, an advanced diamond exploration and sampling vessel,” Snyders noted. These investments, he pointed out, have been immense and not just in capital. He explained that governments and
industries have aligned themselves to the new cycle of investment sometimes people literally move to a new mine or mining region. During the previous cycle, many countries and firms also invested in the idea that demand for commodities had reached a new, higher base.Between 1996 and 2012 the local mining sector's contribution to total exports grew by over 15 percentage points to over 53%, however due to lower mineral prices the contribution had, by 2014, fallen back to the same level as in 1996. Promisingly, Namibia is in much safer territory than Botswana, the DRC and Zambia, whose dependence on minerals remains profound, Snyders stressed. “Some investments have succeeded spectacularly and some turned out to be foolish or speculative. It will take years for us to sort out which investments were real and were just spending, but we can
already see many good assets,” he noted. When FDI declines and the current account is under pressure, when the construction boom ends and food prices are rising, families and communities will have to assess the assets that were built up during the good times. These include financial assets (such as pensions), physical assets and the social assets (universities, schools, hospitals, etc.) that governments need to function, Snyders explained. “This assessment is difficult. The process of national development involves many people (all of us), even multiple generations, and it happens over a long time while the world around us changes… Mining remains essential but the global economy has moved on from the model where fossil fuels powered the machine-based mass production of manufactured goods,” he said. Snyders also pointed out that Namibia had done well on
reaching many of the UN's Millennium Developmental Goals, however he pointed out that while the country has done good work domestically it still remains vulnerable to the external economic environment and commodity prices in particular. The traditional developmental model is for profits from mining and agriculture to be invested in three key areas (manufacturing, construction and utility supply of power and water) so that productivity and efficiency can be properly harnessed. When combined, the mature primary and secondary industries are an ideal base for a complex services sector that grows employment and improves competitiveness. Snyders reiterated that the eventual goal is not just for supply to meet demand. What mining investment can stimulate is the real goal: communities that are prosperous and families that are healthy
and educated, and ready to compete for future success. In terms of risk and uncertainty, Snyders explained that there is both risk and uncertainty in any industry but in mining, especially mining in Southern Africa, there are very close links between national prosperity and the development of the broader mining industry. He added that in the run-up to the peak of the commodity cycle, many thought that the radical uncertainty could all be converted into manageable risk. “Legislators and regulators seldom have time to respond to the complex risks we face before some new uncertainty arises…But instead of making longer lists of risks and uncertainty, I propose we return to an older understanding of those two terms. If we define risk as events that are subject to a known or knowable probability distribution, then we can see that uncertainty
Reaping the benefits of mining investments in Namibia is what cannot be calculated… For uncertain events, it is not possible to specify any probability,” he explained, additionally noting that much trouble in recent years arose because there was a belief that all uncertainty could be treated as risk. The mining sector, along with its partners in manufacturing and finance, Snyders said, offers four specific contributions to any economy namely: (1) longterm thinking and longterm contributions; (2) participation in global value chains and the deepening of finance; (3) advances in machinery and productivity; and lastly (4) industrialisation, specialisation and the division of labour. “If the Namibian mining sector continues to offer these four (less-obvious) benefits while also contributing to both coordination and deliberation, then all Namibians can take the right kind of risk and also protect themselves and their businesses from the considerable uncertainty that we cannot yet imagine,” he concluded.
