Erongo 2nd in Grade 12 NSSCH Results Leandrea Louw

The JSC Grade 10 and the Grade 12 Higher Level Results were released yesterday, and in the Grade 12 Higher Level results, Erongo Region shifted 3 places up and is now in the 2nd position, right behind the Otjikoto Region. Erongo Region still holds the 8th position, the same as last year, as far as the Grade 10 results are concerned.

The top two schools in the JSC Grade 10 results for the Erongo Region with an excellent pass rate of 97% are Duneside High School and Namib High School.

Karibib Private Secondary School has a qualification rate of 85%, followed by Westside High School with 74%, Otjiperongo Junior SecPage 2 ondary School with 64% Duinesig Combined NAMA Latest and School with 62%.

President-elect acknowledges Congratulatory Messages The Prime Minister of the Republic of Namibia and President-elect, Dr Hage G Geingob wishes to acknowledge and thank all those who have sent him congratulatory messages and those who continue to do so following his victory in the recently concluded Presidential Elections.

Ever since his historic victory, where he obtained 87% of the vote, the news of his feat has reverberated around the globe and has generated an outpouring of congratulations from local politicians, traditional authorities and business personalities to international political heavyweights.

Among the world leaders who have sent the Prime Minister their congratulatory messages are none other than Vladimir Putin, President of the Russian Federation and Xi Jinping, President of the People’s Republic of China, number one and number three on the Forbes World's Most Powerful People list.

In his message of congratulations, President Putin said he looked forward to working with Dr Geingob to strengthen friendly relations

and mutually beneficial co-operation between the Republic of Namibia and the Russian Federation.

President Jinping, who said that Namibia was China’s all-weather friend in Africa, stated that he attached great importance to the development of bilateral relations between Namibia and China and wished to work with Dr Geingob to promote the standing friendly relations to a higher level.

Other notable world leaders who have sent their messages so far include President Francois Hollande of France; Joachim Gauck, the President of Germany; President Anibal Cavaco Silva of Portugal and Abdelaziz Bouteflika, President of Algeria. There have also been messages of congratulations from

the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and from Juliao Mateus Paulo “Dino Matrosse”, Secretary General of the MPLA. At home, there have been congratulatory messages from Omukwaniilwa Immanuel Kauluma Elifas of the Ondonga Traditional Authority as well as other traditional leaders.

Messages of congratulations have also come in from local and international investors who are doing business in Namibia.

The Office of the Prime Minister said in its media release, the outpouring of messages reaffirmed the fact that Dr Hage Geingob had entered the arena of world leaders and was being received with open arms as Namibia’s Third President.

Football against Gender Based Violence Marshallino Beukes The Namibia Non-Governmental Organisation Forum Trust (NAGOF Trust), in association with the Namibian Premier League and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) launched a “Football against Gender Based Violence” campaign, in Swakopmund.

Mr Ivan Lombard of NAGOF Trust noted that Gender Based Violence in the country is of great concern and because they, in corporation with UNDP, decided to tackle this social evil in a different fashion.

Football is the most po-

pular sport in the country, and thus the best platform to spread the message, he commented.

NAGOF handed over banners with anti-Gender Based Violence slogans to the NPL and at the same occasion launched their

partnership with the Football Body.

The message which went out to all men is to accept it if their partners want to call it quits and that men should respect a lady’s right of choice.

During school holidays her grandparents spoilt her with milk and honey in the evenings.

She became efficient as

After he passed away, she moved back to Namibia and has been living in the Lions Frail Care Unit ever since.

It was such a pleasure to share in her birthday and the personnel of the Lions Old Age Home and Lions Frail Care Unit sent a wish for her for a wonderful and blessed new year!

The Zip Zap Circus is indeed in Swakopmund this weekend; the show is a mixture of fun, artistic movement, clowns, juggling, trapeze and contortionists

Zip Zap circus is hosting four shows at the Swakopmund Indoor Sport Centre.

Three evening shows and one morning show.

The first show will take place tonight, 19 December, at 19:30.

The second show will be on Saturday morning at 11:30 and another one later that evening at 19:30. The last and final show will take place on Monday, 22 December and will be at 19:30.

As a token of appreciation and the want to giving back to the community, the Swakopmund Indoor Sport

Centre, together with West Coast FM and Herco Marketing invited the Mayor of Swakopmund, Mr Juuso Kambueshe, on Wedn e s d a y, to spoil children of the Swakopmund community who could not have afforded to buy their own tickets.

According to Mayor Kambueshe, a total number of 150 tickets were given to the children who were identified as less privileged.

Speaking at the handing over of tickets to the children, Mr Juuso Kambueshe said the Swakopmund Indoor Sport Centre is a place

everyone should be dying to see as it has put Namibia on the global market. The circus will be showcasing local talents like Vaughn Ahrens, Marvin Sinzila, Janelle, Kwagga, Nam Poet, Ramon and the School of Dance.

Sharlien Tjambari th It is still not known where the 5 Namibian Annual Music Awards (NAMA) will be held, but Swakopmund is still a hot contender.

The official call for entries for the 2015 NAMA came on 15 November and artists had a month to enroll. The closing date for entries was on 15 December. The total number of overall entries for the NAMA's could not be revealed by the time namib times contacted MTC as some of the entries need to be received from various entry points from different towns. Thirty-four entries in total were received from the coast. Dixon, Chippa Ivan, Black#a# Moor Diego and many more wellknown and upcoming artists from the coast have entered. The host of NAMA 2015 still remains anonymous and tension among fans is raising. The decision still need to come from the organisers.

The com-munity of Swakopmund is holding thumbs for their town to host the event for the second time in a row. But, competition between the two towns re-mains tough. The 5th Namibian Annual Music Awards exists to recognise accomplishment in the Namibian recording industry by celebrating those groups and individuals who have excelled in the past year.

The Epango Group is a charitable, voluntary support, non- profit and care group, which has a noble vision and mission to assist in the wellbeing of vulnerable children, the less fortunate and elderly people within and around the Erongo Region.

This support group was established in 2011 by nine compassionate women from the beautiful coastal town of Swakopmund.

Since then, another member joined the group and they are currently ten members.

The main objective of this group is to cater for the needs of the most vulnerable and less fortunate in society, e.g. senior citizens, women and children.

This can only be accomplished by involving communities and business leaders

who have a caring heart for the less fortunate.

Most of their projects are driven by own members' contributions, through monthly fixed contributions and some (20%) are sponsored by organisations.

Over the past 3 years, they have organised Soup Kitchens for children living in the DRC informal settlement of Swakopmund.

Epango managed to successfully feed more than 300 deprived

children at any occasion.

This became an annual event and therefore they would like to do this on a regular basis, but can only achieve this cardinal objective with adequate funds available.

Avant-Garde Investment CC has been the main sponsor of their annual Christmas lunch for the elderly, and this year they contributed N$7 000, which was used for the lunch and some gifts.

Natis scam continues Madelaine Laubscher

The Walvis Bay Chief Traffic Officer, Mr Eben Platt, has informed the newspaper that a notorious scam, which emerged earlier this year, is still going strong and he warns the public that Natis will never contact anyone telephonically for payments to be made to bank accounts.

According to Platt these scammers get hold of the learners licence applicants' contact details and after the applicants have written the test, the scammers contact them to persuade them to pay a certain amount of money (up to N$4 000) into a bank account to buy a licence.

“Four people have already been arrested for these scams but the scam is still underway and people still complain that they have been conned. However the people who fell victim to this scam are just as guilty as the scammers and we will take legal procedures

against both parties,” he says.

Platt wants to warn the community that Natis will only request payments at the counter inside the offices, nowhere else.

He says, “Natis will not be held accountable for these scams as we have warned the community before and we warn them again that these scammers posing as Natis staff members are not from Natis. If anyone receives such a call from a person requesting payment into a bank account or via E-Wallet etc, please contact the Natis offices immediately and speak to

me or the supervisor.We cannot allow this scam to go on any longer. With that said we as the Traffic Department want to wish the community a blessed festive season,” he says.

Platt reiterates that all vehicle owners should make sure their vehicles are roadworthy and that the drivers adhere to the traffic rules.

“The number of accidents is very high. Help us bring that number down. Change your attitude on the road as we cannot patrol all areas at once. We need your help to reduce the accident rate.

Maintain your speeding limit and if you plan to use

alcoholic beverages, please get a designated driver. If you are on a long road and you get tired, do not even buy one drink at a service station as refreshment.

Make sure you are rested well before taking on the road. Check your tyres and if you are a passenger in a bus and the driver is speeding, you have the right to tell the driver to slow down. Woman guilty on drug charges Mavourlene Gaes

Elizabeth Bongiwe Hajisi, who was charged with the counts of dealing in cocaine and dealing in a dangerous dependence-producing substance and, the requisite alternative count of possession of cocaine, was found guilty on the main charges against her. She was found not guilty of the alternative count of possession of a dangerous dependence-producing substance. She will be sentenced on 15 January next year.

Hajisi made her second appearance in the Walvis Bay Magistrate's court on Tuesday.

Hajisi was apprehended on 25 July after the police found 27 pieces of cocaine to the value of N$3 240, as well as six full mandrax tablets and three halves (methaqualone) in her bedroom.

The state built a case against her founded on the incriminating testimony of the very same person she had paid to distribute her drugs. According to the state witness, he stayed

with the accused in the same yard.

He added that the accused would at times call him to deliver the substances and with him being a scholar he knew what drugs were.

The witness also indicated that Hajisi would at times call him to deliver the substances, which he identified to be rocks and mandrax.

The police officer, who had searched the property in Kuisebmond’s Martin Billy Street, testified that in the execution of his valid warrant.

He discovered the suspected Mandrax tablets and crack cocaine where Hajisi sleeps, hidden in a baby shoe and a folded towel belonging to the accused.

The accused denied the claims and remained adamant that the state witness was lying about selling drugs on her behalf.

She however conceded to the court that the drugs were indeed discovered in her bedroom but, she denied any knowledge thereof, and added that she shared the house with tenants that were constantly

moving in and out, and of whom some would even watch television in her room.

She concluded that any of them could have entered, pretended to watch TV and left the drugs in her room.

Hajisi was found guilty beyond reasonable doubt on the counts of dealing in cocaine and methaqualone respectively.

The matter was postponed to 15 January 2015 for sentencing, and the accused is remanded in custody.

A Year of Development Bank Milestones DBN CEO Martin Inkumbi talks about the bank’s evolution and successes in 2014 Development Bank of Namibia (DBN) CEO, Martin Inkumbi, has characterised 2014 as a year of important milestones for the bank. He says that the bank has benefited from strategies developed in previous years, and the implementation of strategies in 2014 has shaped the Bank’s future.

Successful bond issue Inkumbi said the bank’s first private debt issue, in the form of N$200 million promissory notes, was fully subscribed on 24 November 2014. He said the success of the debt issue showed that investors have confidence in the capability of the Bank to

deliver acceptable returns while fulfilling its mandate to develop Namibia.

He said the debt issue has far reaching implications for finance in Namibia.

“Although DBN has not actively positioned itself as a special purpose vehicle for Regulations 15 and 28, full subscription shows that the bank can fulfill needs for a home for capital as required under the regulations,” Inkumbi said.

N$ 2 billion balance sheet and strategic refocusing On the topic of the DBN balance sheet, Inkumbi said the bank’s assets have passed the N$2 billion mark. This, he said, repre-

sents a growing resource for development finance.

He said the structure of projects listed on the balance sheet was responding to the bank’s focus on larger entities within the manufacturing, transport and logistics, and tourism sectors, as well as infrastructure.

Erongo development Inkumbi went on to say that the opening of the bank’s new Erongo office is an important part of the refocusing. He said Erongo should be viewed as a gateway region for other regions in Namibia. As enterprise and infrastructure are stimulated around the port and the mining sector,

Lack of Road signs… a danger to visitors Sharlien Tjambari The removal of road signs due to construction of the B2 road, 11 kilometres outside Swakopmund, near Nonidas, is causing confusion amongst visitors.

A lady who resides at one of the plots just a few kilometres east of Nonidas brought a complaint to namib times about the removal of a road sign that indicated the turn off to the Plots.

According to her the signs were removed about a year ago when Roads Authority started with the construction of the road near Nonidas and they were not replaced ever since the construction was completed. She also said she has been to the Roads Authority to lay a complaint about the road signs and nothing has been done till now.

The lady said she is worried that guests will not find their way to the plots as they are not familiar

with the area, especially now during the festive season. The namib times tried contacting the Road Authority in Swakopmund and was referred to Ms Hileni Fillemon at the head office in Wind-

hoek; we were told she is the only person who is responsible for speaking to the media.

The newspaper tried contacting her for two consecutive dates and could not reach her.

Visitors Beware...

The Rule is Zero Alcohol when Driving Foreign visitors to Namibia caught driving under the influence of alcohol will face bail amounts of up to N$4 000.

N$2 billion in 2014, N$200 million private debt issue and catalytic innovation: Development Bank of Namibia CEO Martin Inkumbi says that 2014 was a year of major milestones and significant evolution for the bank opportunities emerge for enterprise in other regions.

“In the past, the Bank serviced the Erongo region through its Windhoek headquarters, but the new office has been a success, and enterprise and local authorities are responding well to the enhanced physical access,” Inkumbi said.

‘Stick to the Rules, Shebeens,’ says Mayor

Prosecutor-General (PG) Martha Imalwa confirmed that prosecutors and the Namibian Police are allowed to recommend and give bail of N$4 000 to foreigners caught driving drunk.

“This is due to the fact that visitors have a high chance of absconding from trials on drunken driving.

If they receive a high amount for bail, then it will indirectly force them not to abscond and lose the money to the State,” explained the PG. She, however, stated that the police and the courts give bail depending on the

circumstances of the crime for every person, including locals.

Some prosecutors, however, informed this agency on the customary condition of anonymity that they have already been recommending bail of N$4 000 for all drivers since last year.

To the contrary, Imalwa said there was no such directive from her office.

“If you decide that everyone should pay N$ 4 000, it is like you are denying people, especially Namibians, the right to afford bail. Some of them might not be able to pay such a high amount,” she ex-

plained.

The PG said Namibians should not take drinkand-driving cases lightly because it is similar to deliberate murder. She said motor-vehicle accidents caused by drunk drivers kill many innocent people, and that is why the law must make sure that offenders are punished accordingly.

“Namibians should be serious!

If you are drunk, get someone to drive for you, or call the police to assist you instead of driving yourself and ending up killing innocent people,” she advised.

Swakopmund mayor Juuso Kambueshe has threatened to close shebeens which exceed operating hours. He said during the official opening of the first-ever Zip Zap Circus yesterday if they just exceed the operating time with five minutes, they would close them down for good.

The mayor says they cannot allow the festive season to be spoiled by selfish people who do not have any consideration

for other community members. Kambueshe said all shebeen owners have already been warned to strictly adhere to their open-

ing and closing hours this festive season.

Shebeen licenses allow the outlets to open at 10:00, and close at 24:00 on week-

days and Saturdays.

On Sundays, such establishments should open at 10:00 and close at 14:30, and reopen from 18:00 until 24:00.

Special liquor licenseholders are allowed to open their shebeens at 10:00 and close at 02:00 on weekdays and Saturdays, while

on Sundays, their businesses can remain open from 10:00 until 24:00.

All shebeens are supposed to be closed on

Namib vultures set new record During the past season, Namib vultures have set a new breeding record. The Lappet-faced vultures that breed over most of Namibia have their stronghold in the Namib-Naukluft Park. This year the Lappets in the Park raised 100 chicks. The main breeding area, between the Swakop and Kuiseb Rivers accounted for the most nests, but further south, from the Kuiseb River to Sossusvlei, breeding was higher than expected.

The breeding success of these large vultures has been monitored for the past 24 years and it is the first time that 100 chicks have been found and ringed. The 100th chick was ringed in the Tsauchab River, leading to Sossusvlei.

Volunteers from Vultures Namibia, who have been monitoring and ringing the chicks in their nests, are delighted at the higher than normal number of birds found and ringed. Mark Boorman, one of the many volunteers that made it possible, commented: “It was worth all the hard work”.

The previous record was 89 chicks ringed in 2007.

The monitoring of breeding Lappet-faced Vultures in the Namib-Naukluft Park started in 1991 and this long-time project has notched up some interesting records. It is the longest running project of its kind in Namibia and the first to record two vulture chicks in one nest.

Vultures normally only lay one egg, but in 1994, two chicks successfully fledged from a nest in the Tsondab River. Then in 2012, Holger Kolberg found another nest with two chicks near Mirabib.

The success of the past breeding season is probably due to a number of factors.

The first is the excellent aerial survey carried out to locate the nesting vultures from the air and secondly, the increased breeding is likely due to dry conditions and an abundant supply of food.

The past few years of

good rains in the Namib-Naukluft Park resulted in increased breeding of gemsbok, springbok, Hartmann’s mountain zebra and ostrich. Now the limited grazing in several areas could be to the advantage of the vultures as the drought takes its toll.

In early October, the aerial survey took place over the known breeding area of these large birds. As the vultures nest on the top of trees, the nests and chicks are visible to slow, low flying aircraft. Even eggs are visible and the position recorded on a GPS. The aerial survey, by pilots Peter and Harald Keil, conducted over two days, was the best survey for many years. The record number of occupied nests found is due to the flying skills of these two pilots and the experienced observers.

After the aerial survey, many volunteers spent several days driving from one marked nest to the other.

A long ladder enables the volunteers to reach the nest and a numbered metal ring is fitted around one leg of the bird.

In addition, attached to one wing, is a numbered plastic cattle ear tag. Both these are used to monitor movement once the bird leaves its nest. The tag is visible from a distance and the number distinguished using binoculars or a telescope.

Camera-traps at waterholes and vulture restaurants record an increasing number of marked birds. Triggered by movement, these cameras result in many, positive identification of marked birds.

Although many vultures breed in protected areas, they feed on farms and fly to neighbouring countries.

Here landowners, who use poison to control predators attacking their domestic stock, can poison the vultures.

Even game farmers use poison to kill predators of springbok lambs and high-value roan and sable antelope calves.

Other dangers are drowning in steep-sided water reservoirs, collisions with power lines, electrocutions on electricity pylons and

WHY? The marine resources are limited and currently some of them are overfished or over collected.

It is necessary that everybody uses them wisely and carefully to secure the future harvesting needs by protecting the stock. Quantity/number of marine resources harvestable, minimum size limits of fish and crayfish that can be caught, open season etc. help to manage stocks to avoid the total disappearance of some species in our waters.

Do not leave bait or fish on the beach!

Either take it home or return it to the sea. This food attracts scavengers like jackals and gulls that prey on other bio-diversity. When you are back home after the holiday, it also inflates the predator population.

Birthday Bash for pop star Pop star Marvin Sanzila known for songs and videos Roxanne and My X, had a birthday bash in Swakopmund at Infinity Lounge on 13 December.

In the midst of the event, Marvin arrived at Infinity Lounge on a Harley Davidson motorbike, and rode through to the centre of the dance floor with this mean machine. This has not been done yet in the country where an artist enters the

doors of a lounge or club with a Harley.

The event was filled with Cigars, Champagne and an audience from Windhoek to Botswana and Swakopmund. Photographer Christian Stiebahl captured the moment.

This was the second time that Sophia had a Fashion show at the Coast.

She is inspired by the Ovahimba and Damara/Nama traditional attire. Sophia uses African-print material to design her garments.

She obtained her Diploma in Fashion Design from the College of Arts in Windhoek in 2008.

Sophia is one of the talented fashion designers at the coast.

Narraville Old Scholars Association Introduced Leandrea Louw

NAROSA, the Narraville Old Scholars Association that was introduced this month during the De Duine Secondary School Thanksgiving Breakfast, experienced lively reaction since its inception.

The objectives of NAROSA is to uplift the community by fostering interaction and promoting unity and friendship between former scholars and staff and present day learners and staff, further school day friendships and to encourage a spirit of loyalty amongst present learners, enjoy the mutual benefits that can arise through a sustained relationship with the school and former scholars, assist the further development of the school and promote the welfare of the School, through the co-operation of past scholars; by providing scholarships, bursaries, prizes, contributions and donations.

“The primary goals of NAROSA is to encourage Old Scholars to become active ambassadors for the school, to get Old Scholars to initiate

scholarships, to assist the school to continue to invest in the highest quality of teachers & coaches, to promote Narraville based schools renowned for academic excellence, to enhance the sporting facilities, to lobby big businesses, listed funds and private individuals for financial support, to improve the old scholar networking via email and a Facebook page, to track and profile the success of NAROSA members and in so doing reflect the role the schools has played in the Old Scholar’s post school life and to invest funds as an endowment to generate interest with which to build the Narraville based schools of the future,” said Mr Otis Finck, one of the founding members of NAROSA. Furthermore, any scholar that has com-

pleted at least one year at a school in Narraville, Ex officio members such as principals and teachers and associate members such as friends, supporters or parents of learners that were or still are part of Narraville based schools can become a member of NAROSA. NAROSA seeks to further the welfare of the school; to promote unity and friendship amongst former students and staff of the school and its predecessors; to maintain the interest of such former students and staff in the school; to promote the involvement of members in the Association in clubs and other bodies affiliated with the association.

It will strive to meet these objectives primarily through support and assistance provided to the Old Scholars’ af-

filiated clubs; provision of bursaries to students of Old Scholars; co-ordination and assistance of various Old Scholar reunion functions and events; promotion of the achievements of past scholars.

The Association already has an elected committee.

The Committee consists of the three founding members, Zane Jansen, the late Wendy Mouton, and Otis Finck, as well as Yolandé Koning, Zelda Cloete, Emelda Mouton and Jo-An Stevens.

Mrs Yolandé Koning herewith also encouraged old scholars from Narraville Primary School as well as De Duine Secondary School to join the old scholars association.

The official launch of NAROSA will be February next year.

Aber sie kocht mit ihren 94 Jahren noch immer. Und jeden Nachmittag, wenn sie frei hat, läuft sie mit ihrer Gehhilfe ins Lions-Pflegeheim und unterhält sich mit den Insassen, die ihre Ankunft schon freudig erwarten.

Frau Gerda Boysen (geb. Padel) war ihr Leben lang am Arbeiten, denn das Geld war so gut wie immer knapp. ,,In Wesel haben wir gut gelebt, denn mein Vater Max arbeitete für die Singer-Nähmaschinenfabrik,”erinnert sich die gebürtige Rheinländerin. ,,Doch die Sehnsucht nach Afrika, wo er als freiwilliger Soldat in Aus stationiert war, ließ meinen Vater nicht los, und so landeten wir 1928 wieder in SWA. 1933 war dann die Inflationszeit, und wir verloren alles über Nacht. Wir hatten damals nur Geld auf der Bank und keine Besitztümer.”

Als Max Padel von einem Freund bei der Probe des Männergesangvereins in Windhoek hörte, dass Omaruru die Perle des Nordens sei, wo man Geld verdienen könne, kündigte er bei der CDM und zog mit der Familie dorthin. ,,Mein Vater hat unseren finanziellen Verlust allerdings nie ver-

Mit 13 Jahren musste Gerda Padel die Schule verlassen, denn es war kein Geld für die Fortbildung da. ,,Ich kann heute noch nicht schwimmen, weil meine Mutter damals den Tickie nicht hatte, um mir das Schwimmabzeichen zu zahlen.

Dann hätte sie es meinen beiden Brüdern auch zahlen müssen, und das wäre dann schon beinahe ein Schilling gewesen. Für einen Schilling konnte man drei Pfund Kartoffeln kaufen. Das war sicherlich billig, aber wir hatten eben auch kein Geld.”

Und so kam es, dass Gerda Padel mit 14 Jahren ihren ersten Job als Kindermädchen antrat: ,,Ich verdiente damals ein Pfund, das war viiiel Geld!” Mit dem Verdienst war es ihr schon bald möglich, eine kaufmännische Lehre in Omaruru zu absolvieren.

Mit Wehmut denkt Frau Boysen heute an ihre Jugendzeit zurück:

,,Am glücklichsten war ich in Omaruru, obwohl wir nichts hatten.

Sonntags kam die Jugend zusammen und spielte Schlagball. Das ist wie Kricket, aber nicht mit einem Kricketstock und -ball, sondern mit der Planke einer Obstkiste und einem gewöhnlichen Tennisball, und das

hatte,” schmunzelt Frau Boysen vor sich hin und fügt hinzu. ,,Aber ich bin zufrieden. Wissen Sie, man muss sich mit den Umständen abfinden, dann hat man keinen Ärger.”

1935 verließ die 15jährige Gerda Padel Omaruru, um bei Tippelskirch in Swakopmund zu arbeiten. Nach einem Jahr ging es nach Windhoek, wo sie sieben Jahre lang bei Wecke und Voigts tätig war. ,,Ich musste meine Mutter unterstützen, denn Bruder Fritz war in Deutschland, und mein Halbbruder Bernhard Farmeleve.

Ein Jahr vor ihrem Tod 1947 war meine Mutter im Antonius-Hospital stationiert, und die Kosten habe ich, so wie ich konnte, abbezahlt.”

Ihr Mann brachte ihr dann mal eine Bauernmalerei mit Spruch aus der Stadt mit, der die Arbeitsverhältnisse des Ehepaars treffend zusammenfasst: ,,Gott erhalte mir meine Gesundheit und die Arbeitskraft meiner Frau.” Obwohl das Arbeitspensum in der Ehe sehr ungleich verteilt war, hielt die Ehe 55 Jahre lang. Weihnachtsgedicht a la Loriot

Es blaut die Nacht, die Sternlein blinken, Schneeflöcklein leis' herniedersinken. Auf Edeltännleins grünem Wipfel häuft sich ein kleiner, weißer Zipfel.

Und dort, vom Fenster her, durchbricht den t u n k l e n Ta n n e i n warmes Licht.

Im Forsthaus kniet bei Kerzenschimmer die Försterin im Herrenzimmer. In dieser wunderschönen Nacht hat sie den Förster umgebracht. Er war ihr bei des Heimes Pflege seit langer Zeit schon sehr im Wege. Drum kam sie mit sich überein: Am Niklasabend muß es sein.

Und als das Rehlein ging zur Ruh', das Häslein tat die Augen zu, erlegte sie - direkt von vorn - den Gatten über Kimm' und Korn.

Vom Knall geweckt rümpft nur der Hase zwei-, drei-, viermal die Schnuppernase und ruhet weiter süß im Dunkeln, derweil die Sterne traulich funkeln.

Und in der guten Stube drinnen, da läuft des Försters Blut von hinnen. Nun muß die

Dieses ist die letzte Ausgabe der Namib Times in 2014. Ein neues Jahr wartet auf uns, mit all seinen unangenehmen und freudigen Überraschungen. Wie für jeden Tag gilt auch für jedes Jahr, die Herausforderung des Daseins immer wieder neuen Mutes anzupacken.

Was möchte ich Ihnen ins Lebensgepäck mitgeben? Meine Gedanken zum Thema Bücher und Lesen!

In der Schule wird aus dem Lesevergnügen oft eine kalte Regel gemacht: ,,Mein Kind, du musst viel lesen, denn das ist gut für deine Konzentration, dein Denken, deine Zukunft.” Es wird viel zu wenig betont, welch ein Entzücken es sein kann, in ein Buch abzugleiten, wenn man als Grundschulkind zum Beispiel abends nach der verordneten Nachtruhe klammheimlich mit der Taschenlampe unter der Bettdecke Seite um Seite von Enid Blytons ,Fünf-FreundeAbenteuer’ umblättert,

Herz brach. Der Herzschmerz entwickelte sich in eine Sucht nach realitätsbezogenen Abenteuerbüchern im Eis, wo richtige Männer echte Risiken eingingen...Robert Falcon Scott, Ernest Shackleton, Robert Bartlett.

4x4 Desert Challenge

Saturday 13 December saw the launch of Namib Off-Road's first ever 4x4 Desert Challenge. Conceptionalised by Dirk Bosman and Leon-Pieter “LeBones” Kuhn, two well-known stalwarts and devotees of desert driving, the dare to “Beat the Course!” proved irresistible and produced a day of undeniable fun and excitement.

The event took place at the newly constructed Desert Raceway track, approximately seven kilometres outside Walvis Bay, on the road to Rooibank. This was not a “Vasbyt” event, but an obstacle course in which regular 4x4 vehicles, being driven by ordinary people, competed in a enjoyable and exciting, yet relaxed atmosphere. Not that one could tell that from inspecting the 8 courses; they rated from “relatively laid-back” to “downright evil”!

The Friday before, Dirk and Riaan Lotriet created the various obstacle courses; almost certainly with a smattering of merciless delight at some of the near impossible corners, thick banks of sand, dongas and narrow boundaries.

This was after all about having fun; the perfect event to lose credibility as a grown-up. The course did its job. On more than a few occasions fallen vehicles had to be towed out by Riaan's trusty Jeep and once, just for pleasure,

by a tractor.

A last minute entrant, Casper Vermaak, who, on the spur of the moment decided to enter “just to give it a bash with my Landrover” turned out to be the 4x4 Desert Challenge Champion of the day. Well done, Casper! Namib Off-Road Centre spon-

sored and handed out prizes worth N$20 000 afterwards in the welcome coolness of the refreshment tent.

The very first 4x4 Challenge proved to be a day of fun, pleasure and enjoyment for all that were there.

If you were unlucky enough to miss it, don't

fret too much. Namib Off-Road will be doing it again soon. The organisers said that they wanted to express their gratitude to Johan Roodt and Johnny Doe-seb of Desert Race-way as well as all the contestants and spectators who contributed in making this event a great success.

Blue Waters and Langer Heinrich's partnership continuous Marshallino Beukes Langer Heinrich Uranium once again committed itself in ploughing back into the community through sport, by sponsoring N$250 000 to Blue Waters Sports Club, yesterday.

This partnership between the two entities is ongoing since 2010 and through the generous annual sponsorship the Sports Club was able to reach out to the youth by means of various sport codes. Mr Simon Solomons, Langer Heinrich's Managing Director, noted that it was a great pleasure to present the sponsorship to the team, as it is for a good cause. He mentioned the past successes of the soccer club and seemed very much impressed with LHU Blue Waters' 4th position on the current Premier League log standing.

Blue Waters Sports Club caters for various sports codes, including a girls' cricket programme which,

according to ex-Brave Warrior, Mr Sandro De Gouveia, who serves on Blue Water's management, is very efficacious. He also noted that the Sports Club is assisting the Kuisebmond Cricket Academy, where some of the unprivileged children's talent can easily go down the drain as a result of financial difficulties.

The clubs' vice chairperson, Mr Robert Shimooshili expressed his gratitude and noted that LHU's sponsorship is enabling them to make significant contributions in youth/ sport development. Cycling, Kayak Adventure Challenge!

A group of adventurers will tackle the sandy beach from Anchors in Walvis Bay to Pelican Point tomorrow in the first ever Adventure Cycling Event.

The increasingly popular fat bike, which is a mountain bike with much thicker wheels than an ordinary bike, will be tried and tested at this event, although it is possible to do the ride with a normal sized mountain bike.

The idea grew between two locals, Danny Beukes and Robert Steinmetz, to find a fun way to raise dire needed funds for the Walvis Bay Kids Haven, a shelter for children. The adventure will consist of a 30 km bicycle ride, about 10 km along the beach, a 2 hour guided kayaking expedition along the coast, and followed by cheese and wine on a famous catamaran. All this is only for N$2 500 per entry, of which 100% goes to Kids Haven. “A race to Paaltjies is anticipated, but only if the prize money can grow to at least N$2 000. The win-ner will share 50% of the prize money with the Walvis Bay Kids Haven, with a surprise athlete to compete against.

The rest of us will maintain a slow, steady and easy pace the entire way, as this is actually a fun event”, said Danny Beukes, spokesperson for this event.
