More taxi ranks The coast is SA celefor Swakopmund brity heaven today Sharlien Tjambari Taxi owners and operators held a peaceful demonstration at the Swakopmund municipal offices yesterday to demand more designated drop-off zones for taxi commuters around the town. Apart from a taxi rank, they argued, not much has been done for drop-off points in other parts of the town. A petition highlighting frustrations was handed over to the mayor of Swakopmund Clr Paulina Nashilundo and the Town Clerk of Swakopmund, Mr Eckart Demasius. In July 2013, Mr Seun Simon Kambwa, who

have been representing the bus and taxis owners in Erongo, handed a letter requesting for bus and taxi ranks around town. Up to now nothing has been done to ease the situation, it is claimed in the petition. According to Kamb-

No harm in dam Continued from Page 1 After the finalising of the study and environmental clearance, CHEC commenced in recent weeks to pump the dredge spoil (a mixture of seawater and sea sand) onto the land. The area is formed at a slope towards the sea, resulting in the sea water flowing back to the sea and leaving the sand to form a stable land mass. Port Engineer for Namport Elzevir Gelderbloem confirmed the above yesterday and added only some 400 000 cubic meters of the total of 10 million cubic metres of sand would the utilised to form the land mass. Gelderbloem added the dumping of the dredge spoil is in actual fact a wastage, and expressed hope that in future ways could be found to use dredge spoil to stabilise areas around Walvis Bay covered by rolling sand dunes.

More taxi ranks Continued from Page 1 where the absence of demarcated drop-off zones resulting in commuters risking their safety. Moreover taxi operators get fined by traffic officials if they stop in the street to drop off passengers. “They either have to stand in the middle of the road and load off, which is risky because you will get a ticket if you get caught,” explained Kambwa when handing over the petition yesterday. The buses, especially the ones belonging to the mines, use loading zones in Mondesa, but there are no signs indicating it is a bus stop. Other issues raised in the petition are as follows: At Mondesa taxi rank there is a communication gap between the administrator of the rank and the operator. A committee is needed for the administration of the rank and operators to maintain open communication. Another challenge is bus- and taxi drivers who are increasingly using the truck port as a pick-up point for residents. However, Swakopmund's traffic authority is making exceptions and operators from other towns are allowed to operate unhindered, yet local taxi's get fines for using the truck port. That is claimed in the petition. The petition named several points where taxi ranks are urgently needed. Food Lovers Market was one of the points mentioned.

Well-known skipper dies The death occurred on Saturday of Mr Mark Anderson (46), in life a skipper working for Merlus Seafood Processors. Anderson and his spouse were angling near Paaltjies at Walvis Bay when he unexpectedly collapsed and died. Friends that were with the Andersons tried in vain to resuscitate him.

Smash-and-grab incidents on the rise in Walvis Bay Madelaine Laubscher

Smash-and-grab thieves have become more active along the coast and are allegedly becoming more aggressive in targeting women/vulnerable persons sitting in their vehicles who have valuables with them. According to a police official, the culprits target women waiting in their cars. The thugs are after any valuables including handbags, jewellery and mobile phones. “During the festive season, a woman was waiting in the car for someone in the vicinity of Magic Discounters in Walvis Bay, when the culprits smashed her window, grabbed her handbag and her phone and ran away. We went so far as to dial the number of the stolen phone. The culprits simply said 'we will come back and kill you'. They however never returned with the stolen items,” the source said. Another incident occurred last week when a woman was targeted in her car in the vicinity of Shoprite in Walvis Bay.

A window that was smashed out reportedly in the vicinity of Shoprite Walvis Bay

The culprit allegedly smashed her vehicle's windown with his head to grab her phone. “We advise motorists to be vigilant. Pay attention when and where you park and advise passengers waiting in the car not to keep valuables where it is visible for any passers-by. Such incidents occur on a regular basis and there is little one could do in such an event. We thus advise that such incidents be prevented by keeping valuables out of sight and that you remain vigilant at all times. If you feel uncomfortable about persons lurking too close to your vehicle, let someone accompany you to your vehicle or immediately drive away. If you fall victim to such a crime, sound your car alarm immediately.”

Your blood is replaceable - your life is not.... While every effort has been made during the festive season to ensure we build a healthy supply of blood unfortunately we find ourselves without a sufficient blood supply. There has been a steady decline in blood donations since the New Year. “Currently, there is a shortage of blood,” said Zita Tobin of the Blood Transfusion Service of Namibia (NamBTS.) “The supply is critically low on average we need 135 donations a day, however we have only been receiving approximately 85 donations. This has resulted in 500 fewer donations for the month. In particular blood type O positive and O negative is required. We are making an urgent appeal to the public to donate blood,” Tobin said. “The only way to give patients access to this precious life-saving resource, is through the selfless act of blood donation. We are also appealing to those donors who have not donated for a while and members of our communities who have not donated before to come forward and make a lifesaving donation.” Those interested in becoming a blood donor

should be older than 16 years, weigh more than 50kg, lead a sexually safe lifestyle and enjoy general good health. Two suspects, former police officer Muzanima Barnabas (26) and Petaya Iipinge (31) who attempted to rob a church in Walvis Bay’s Kuisebmond were unlucky when they were allegedly overpowered by a reverend and his two sons. The suspects appeared in the Walvis Bay Magistrate's court on Thursday. The pair was denied bail after it was discovered the church was not their first burglary attempt since they also allegedly broke into several other houses that same night. The matter was postponed to 22 February for further investigation. NamPol Deputy Commissioner, Ottilie Kashuupulwa, confirmed the incident that took place on Wednesday evening at the Baptist Church in Kuisebmond. According to Kashuupulwa, in an attempt to rob the church Barnabas, who was employed as a police officer before he was fired last year for stealing out of a motor vehicle, and Iipinge were overpowered by the reverend with the help of his two sons who allegedly beat them up before tying them up and calling the police. In a recent interview, Reverend Lucas Ndjamba narrated the incident and said his daughter woke him up that evening after she heard a commotion in the church. The church and the reverend's house are in one building. The reverend further explained he went to the church and asked who was breaking in but that the thieves ignored him and continued to kick the door. “I went back into the house to fetch a hammer from the kitchen but three

Reverend Lucas Ndjamba burglars were already behind me.” A fight ensued. “I avoided hitting them with the hammer as they might die and I did not want to commit a sin, so I used my bare hands to fight.” He said one man had a knife while the other had a wheel spanner, but none of them managed to injure him with their weapons. During the Reverend's struggle to avoid flying chairs and a swinging spanner towards him, his sons woke up and came to his rescue. When they realised they were being overpowered one of the accused resorted to biting the reverend on his left arm and locked his jaws to cause as much pain as possible. “He refused to let go of my arm and my son had to punch his jaws several times before he let go.” The two suspects were restrained and tied up before the police were called. The third suspect however managed to escape with a laptop. According

to the reverend, the thieves were continuusly asking for money during the fight. “I think they were ready to kill if we allowed them, because they could have run away when they heard my voice but they risked coming inside.” The Head of Community Policing in the Erongo region, Sergeant Ileni Shapumba applauded the brave reverend saying “That is a brave move, we appreciate such behaviour in the community.” Shapumba said the community should not easily submit to criminals. “We do not encourage people to fight criminals as it is dangerous in some instances, but if it happens and one succeeds then we applaud,” he said. Shapumba said when possible, civilians should detain suspects and call the police immediately. “The police and community have a common purpose of ensuring peace and security. So let us work together to achieve that.” Nampa

Junior Council takes time for team building Liesl Losper The Junior Council of Walvis Bay recently hosted a team building event for its councillors. This is to assure that a good relationship and a spirit of hard work remain between members of the JC for this year. The annual team building event took place at the International School of Walvis Bay with numerous members from 7 high schools participating. The Junior Councillors took part in sport activities as well as obstacle courses, which were aimed at strengthening communication and unity between

them. The concept of the event was to ensure that the councillors learn to work together as a team, as they will be working side by side this year in all the projects they set out to do. The team building day is also set out to develop leadership skills. “The team building day allowed the councillors to break out of

their shell and thus get to know one another, therefore allowing the councillors to work more efficiently and cohesively together. I would like to thank my fellow councillors for making this event a success, as their determination and excitement will be a pleasure to work with in all the projects for 2016, said Junior Mayor, Laura van Reenen.

Three fined N$5 000 each for 200 undersized lobsters

The sand in the road leading to the Paaltjies parking area

Sharlien Tjambari The coastal public is dismayed at the fine of N$5 000 each three men received in the Swakopmund magistrate’s court for having 200 crayfish in their possession last week. A scandalous 75 % of the rock lobster were udersized too. Clinton Malander (33), English Marlon (29) and Jaron Fogoyi (26) were arrested by police reservists and Inspectors of the Ministry of Fisheries on 12 January at Swakopmund. Approximately 200 rock lobster were found in their possession, of which 75% were undersized.

The three made their first appearance in the Swakopmund magistrate’s court last Thursday, and the case was remanded to the next day for sentencing. Where the fine could have been around N$45 000, to the dismay of everyone each of the accused received a N$5 000 fine. Some argued the

seriousness of the case neccessitated it to be transferred to the regional court, in order for a heavier penalty. Critics said this penalty now paves the way for people to plunder rock lobster and other marine resources at bigger quantities, as the fine of N$5 000 is worth the risk.

Roads Authority undertakes to repair Paaltjies road Madelaine Laubscher The Roads Authority confirmed this week it would send in a road contractor to mend the road towards the parking area and Paaltjies area South of Walvis Bay, after numerous complaints by the public that the road becomes increasingly unpassable. Thick sand makes the road unsuitable for most smaller type vehicles. Readers complained to namib times over the issue and subsequently the matter was taken up with the Roads Authority. A spokesperson of Roads Authority in Walvis Bay said: “We usually make use of a contractor to clear the sand out of the way on the said road. We will immediately notify the contractor in Swakopmund so that a thorough cleanup can be done.”

Roads not a playground for children While driving in Walvis Bay I had a small incident on Friday that could have had terrible consequences and all parents must be made aware of this trend. A group of seven boys were walking with a dog in Meersig and one of the boys decided to play chicken (waiting in the middle of the road for moving cars to reach them before jumping out of the road) with my car. He stood still in the middle of the road facing me and waited until I reached him then he jumped out of the way while his friends were staring at his doing. I luckily hit the brakes in time. This is really not a game and parents should speak to their children before letting them into the streets. What will happen if a driver only looks away for a second? Roads are not a playground and more so, not a place to play chicken with moving vehicles. Children hardly realise the consequences of their actions, that is why parents should talk to their children about the dangers of playing with moving cars. Concerned

12 Oscar nominations for The Revenant The cast and filmmakers of The Revenant celebrated their 12 Oscar nominations on the red carpet at London's Leicester Square on Thursday, 14 January. Cast members who walked the red carpet included Leonardo DiCaprio, Will Poulter, Domhnall Gleason, Alejandro González Iñárritu – Director, and Tom Hardy. Inspired by true events, THE REVENANT is an immersive and visceral cinematic experience capturing one man's epic adventure of survival and the extraordinary power of the human spirit. In a quest to survive, Glass

endures unimaginable grief as well as the betrayal of his confidant John Fitzgerald (Tom Hardy). Guided by sheer will and the love of his family, Glass must navigate a vicious winter in a relentless pursuit to live and find redemption. THE REVENANT is directed and co-written by renowned filmmaker, Academy Award-winner Alejandro González Iñárritu (Birdman, Babel). The film will be released on 22 January.

Axel Koepp receives top achiever's award in Mathematics Sharlien Tjambari The former Grade 12 learners who were part of the Mathematics Enrichment Program received certificates and awards for their outstanding performance in mathematics during their final national Grade 12 external examinations. Langer Heinrich Uranium (LHU) have over the five years (2011-2015) sponsored a total amount of N$950 000 towards the Orison's Mathematics Enrichment Program, which benefitted 102 Higher Level learners and 71 Extended Level learners. 29 Higher Level learners and 21 extended Level learners attended the program in 2015. Mr Simon Solomons the Managing Director of LHU said mathematics is crucial in the development of mankind, “today it occupies a crucial and unique role in everyday life and is applied in field such as engineering, accounting and finance” said Solomons. He said that he believes that awarding learners will inspire them to do better and it is an inspiration to those who are not awarded to work even harder, “not only in mathematics but in all other areas of their lives” said Solomons. Namibia to host Archery Tournaments in 2016/17

Under-19 cricket team capped ahead of World Cup

The Namibian national under-19 cricket players received national colours on Saturday ahead of their departure to Bangladesh on Tuesday for the International Cricket Council (ICC) World Cup. The event takes place from 22 January to 14 February, and 16 teams are participating in four groups. Namibia qualified for the ICC world cup after winning the ICC Africa U-19 Championship in Tanzania in February 2015. Addressing the 15 players, their parents and team management, Cricket Namibia Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Donovan Zealand said cricket is a team sport and the players should bear in mind that they are representing the country and not themselves. “Credit should be given to the parents who have been behind these children. You supported them throughout their sporting activities and I am happy for what you are still going to do for these young players in the future. “As for the players, you should feel proud to represent your country, your family and your nation.” Zealand said the U19 World Cup might be one of the biggest competitions the young players will participate in throughout their careers, and there is a huge responsibility placed on their shoulders. “We are going to Bangladesh to compete and not add up numbers. We will play at a venue that suits our style of play, but we should put in mind that the weather might play a big role. “What you need to get used to in the first days when you arrive is acclimatising yourselves to the humidity as it might be very hot during the games, but we are going there to compete.” Namibia's first match in Group A is against Scotland on 29 January, two days later against defending champions South Africa, and then Bangladesh on 2 February. Head coach Rangarirai Manyande is assisted by Steven Berry and Fortune Matawu, while Andre Schmidlin is team manager and Mark Clint Henry is the physiotherapist. The competition will be played on the basis of limited overs in which each team bowls 50 overs. The top two teams in each of the four groups progress to the Super League quarterfinals, while the two bottom teams from each group qualify for the Plate Championship quarterfinals. The 15 players are Francios Rautenbach; Petrus Jacobus Burger; Michael Stephen van Lingen; Nikolaas Davin; Motjaritje Honga; Charl Michael Brits; Eben van Wyk; Lohan Louwrens; Chrischen Olivier; Frederik Johannes Coetzee; Warren van Wyk; Burton Brad Jacobs; Hans Jürgen Linde; Zane Green; and SJ Loftie-Eaton. Namibia will host the 11th Federation of African Archery (FAA) Championship and the African Continental Qualifying Tournament for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro 2016, as well as the World Games in Wroclaw 2017. The Federation of African Archery (FAA) has awarded the rights to host the 11th Federation of African Archery (FAA) Championship 2016 to Archery Association of Namibia (AAN). This Tournament will most importantly also be the African Continental Qualifying Tournament for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro 2016, as well as the World Games in Wroclaw 2017. Permission to host this event was granted by the Namibia National Sports Commission and carries the blessing of the Namibia National Olympic Committee. The African Archery Championships are the highest level of competition for Africa's archers. The Championship will be held 28 - 31 January in Windhoek, Namibia. Olympic Solidarity will fund and host a training camp in conjunction with the Archery Association of Namibia during the week preceding the championships. This training camp will cater for archers and coaches from the FAA Member Associations who will compete in the Tournament. Mr Pascal Colmaire, from World Archery, and Mrs Marja Woortman (AAN and FAA Coach) will be responsible for this week. After the final entry deadline (7 January 2016) the Archery Association of Namibia (AAN) can now announce that Namibia will welcome 111 archers, coaches and officials in Windhoek. The following countries have entered teams: Algeria, Benin, Egypt, Cote d'Ivoire, Kenia, Lybia, Mauritius, Morocco, Malawi, Namibia, Tunesia, Sudan, Zimbabwe and South Africa. The biggest delegations and teams will be from Egypt, Morocco and South Africa. During the competition the AAN will also welcome the Secretary General of the Federation of African Archery (FAA) Dr Ahmed Koura, as well as the FAA President Dr Aladin Gabr and several Vice Presidents. World Archery will be represented by the Director of Development, Mr Pascal Colmaire. The first participants will arrive on Monday 18 January 2016. The training camp will be held at the SKW Archery Range from 20 - 26 January. The venue for the Championship will be the DTS sportsgrounds. The hosting of the championships in Namibia will put much needed spotlight on Archery as a sport and hopefully create interest within communities in Namibia, thereby increasing participation of more people, also from rural backgrounds to take up the sport.

Warriors technical team still waiting on Cosafa reward

The Brave Warriors technical team could receive rewards by March/April this year for guiding the senior national football team to Cosafa Cup glory. “We will give the technical team their reward and that will be in our next financial budget for 2016. That means that possibly by March or April the team will be paid,” said Minister of Sport, Youth and National Service Jerry Ekandjo on Monday. If the minister stays true to his word, this means the nine-member team will receive their bonuses almost one year after they assisted the players to win the Confederation of Southern African Football Associations (Cosafa) Cup in South Africa in May 2015.It is Namibia's first major silverware, which the players will defend here in May this year. The members of the technical team are Head Coach Ricardo Mannetti; his assistant Ronny Kanalelo; Team Manager Tim Isaacs; Players' Manager Jakes Amaning; Goalkeeper Coach Herman Januarie; Kit Manager Immanuel Mungendje; Fitness Trainer Sibusiso Mahlangu; Team Doctor

Donatha Ngunovandu; and Head of Mission Oscar Mulonda. Upon the team's triumphant return home, President Hage Geingob announced a cash reward of N$1,2 million for the 24 players, stressing that the money should be given to the players only. Geingob added then that the technical team would receive their tokens of appreciation from the line ministry – the Ministry of Sport, Youth and National Service. Ekandjo told Nampa his ministry did not have the budget to pay the technical team when it won the tournament, but they have included them in their next financial budget. He did not specify what rewards lie in waiting for the technical team. Namibia Football Association (NFA) Secretary General, Barry Rukoro told this agency he was not aware of the arrangements made by the ministry, but was positive the minister will inform the football association when he sees fit. Football Development Academy kicks off

Liesl Losper

This weekend the football development Academy started with their first session with 125 boys and girls from the age of 5 up to 17. The dream of the Academy is to develop soccer lovers into talented soccer players.

“Our kids don't dream anymore, now they can create and live a dream to become a good soccer player. They must realise that sport is not only a hobby, but it can become a career. Among these young children that are on this field can be one of Namibia's greatest football heroes,” said Denzel Bruwer. Bruwer, who played soccer on a professional level for the Brave Warrior (Class of 1998 in the African Cup of Nations), Ajax Cape Town, Wits University and is the holder of an advanced FIFA Certificate for youth development and woman soccer, is the man behind this initiative. He is also happy for the assistance from other well-known soccer players like Tyrone Mouton, Melvin Bruwer, Alex Melanie and Vladi Abrahams. Denzel says “they start at the age

group of 5 because this is where you create interest, 9 to 14 is where they learn the basics, 14 to 15 is the golden era of development and from 15 to 17 they go into the big world of soccer. This football academy is not only for Narraville but for the whole Erongo Region. The initiative stems from the need to keep the young ones away from other things that has a negative impact on their lives. Unfortunately, everything we use, involves maintenance costs and there is a small fee that the parents have to pay. We also encourage business people to get involved in this project to keep it a success, after we got this far.” At this stage they only practise on Saturdays at the Narraville Stadium, but this will soon have to change to do it during the week for different age groups on different days.
