The scene of the accident on Saturday evening Madelaine Laubscher
Two people, (a woman and a man) lost their lives in a gruesome collision at the corner of 5th Road and Union Street on Saturday night in Walvis Bay.
The acident happened around 19:00 and the driver of a Toyota Land Cruiser, Jean Cilliers (20) was taken into Page 12 custody and moved to the Walvis Bay Police holding cells. He appeared in the Walvis Bay Magistrates Court yesterday. Nampol Deputy Commissioner Otillie Kashuupulwa confirmed the two deaths. The deceased were a passenger and the driver of a Hyundai Getz sedan (N 4639 OT).

Both died instantly after the vehicle they were travelling in was struck by the Land Cruiser (N 149-006 W) whose driver allegedly ignored a stop sign. “The name of the woman who passed away is Ms Estelle Louw (35). Her next of kin have been informed. The identity of the driver who died in the accident is being withheld until his next of kin have been informed, Kashuupulwa said. She confirmed that the
police arrested Jean Cilliers. He will be charged with double culpable homicide, drunk driving and/or negligent/reckless driving. When reporters of the namib times arrived at the scene, firefighters and paramedic rescue personnel were hard at work with the use of the Jaws of Life to extract the two surviving and injured occupants from the small sedan. The survivors were stabilised and transported
to Walvis Bay hospital by St Gabriel Community Trust Ambulance Services. Moving scenes were observed at the accident scene when friends and relatives of the occupants of the sedan turned up when they heard about the tragic incident. One family member said that they are from Otjiwarongo and were returning from a wedding when the accident occurred. In another collision, a
police vehicle and a Toyota Yaris (N 8189 WB) collided at the 17th Road and Nangolo Mbumba Drive intersection on Sunday evening at approximately 22:00. The registration plates of the police van disappeared mysteriously from the crash scene. No one died in this incident. The driver of the Yaris (also a police officer according to unconfirmed reports) sustained a cut to his head and was stabilised by paramedic rescue per-
sonnel at the scene and taken to hospital for further treatment. One of the occupants of the police van also sustained injuries. Deputy Commissioner Kashuupulwa confirmed the incident and said that an investigation is being conducted to determine the cause of the accident. Walvis Bay Traffic Chief Eben Platt was at the scene and attributed the accident to ignorance, a complete disregard for the road rules and speed. Continues on page 2

Crash Continued from page 1 “This has been a very bad weekend for the road users in Walvis Bay. I accompanied the relatives of the persons who died in yesterday’s accident to the mortuary so that they could identify the bodies of their beloved ones. It was a very traumatic experience. I keep asking myself what can or could I have done to prevent such a tragedy?” he commented. In another accident, a Volkswagen Polo sedan with registration N 21282 WB crashed into a shack situated on a property in James Brown Street in Kuisebmond on Saturday morning. Kashuupulwa confirmed the incident and said that a suspect was arrested and charged with drunken driving.

Addressing members of the media at the company’s headquarters in Walvis Bay, Kahimise stressed those consumers operating on a 30 Amp breaker and below, and registered pensioners will not get any tariff hikes and will continue to pay the N$1.20 per kilowatt per hour rate. “Some of these vulnerable groups survive on N$300 per month where they consume on overage 250 units. Three years ago the lowest tariff was in Windhoek; we reinvented our tariffs completely and introduced the inclining block tariffs. Erongo Red, and specifically in the Erongo Re-gion, is offering the lowest electricity tariffs in Namibia. The first block is 1.20, the next block is N$1.35 and the last block N$1.60. Even if you take the average thereof, it gives you N$1.38. Anyone on 30 Amp breakers and below enjoys fully sibsidised tariffs,” said Kahimise and added that the power distributor has installed pre-paid meters to this segment of customers at no cost. He said over the past years the bulk electricity price has increased by an average of 16% adding that the trend will continue until some of the envisaged national electricity projects such as Kudu Gas become operational. Kahimise noted that Namibia imports 60% of its energy supply from other countries; South Africa, Mozambique, Zambia, and Zimbabwe and in the dry months the country imports up to 80%. “In addition to the power deficit, we are also faced with ageing infrastructure
that needs to be upgraded and to accommodate development in the region. Another challenge that the electricity supply industry faces is the pressure to supply electricity at an affordable rate while the cost of generating, transmitting and distributing electricity is rising steeply. Furthermore there is also the issue of regional transmission congestion, capacity constraints and increase of copper thefts,” Kahimise said. From January to date, the value of stolen copper cables is N$95 883.16. He cautioned consumers to minimise the usage of electricity during this high demand period and failure to do so will make them feel the impact of the new tariffs. “In N$1 per unit, 60 to 65% of that goes to Nampower. Why do we pass on an increase lower than 15%? By suppressing overheads general expenses or we pass only inflation to the other cost component. 14 cents goes for the local authority surcharges, 10 14 cents is what we use as Erongo Red. I am convinced that even if you take electricity back to the municipalities it will not bring down that cost. This is no robot science, do your own numbers,” Kahimise said. The Electricity Control Board (ECB) granted an average tariff increase of 10.2%. “We have reached a stage where electricity cannot go down even if it moves back to the municipality,” he added. Kahimise said the Social Tariffs project has seen a rapid increase in the number of beneficiaries with more than 3 700
registered pensioners on the scheme and annually costs the company N$10 million off the company’s profits. Half of the beneficiaries are in Swakopmund, followed by Walvis Bay and Henties Bay, Kahimise said. The bulk upgrade of Henties Bay has been completed and the Swakopmund upgrade will begin later. The Walvis Bay upgrade is in progress and scheduled to be completed by 2016 at a cost of $500 million. Erongo Red and Nampower will contribute N$130 million and N$370 million respectively. “The sad reality is that we are using electricity that we do not have, our peak demand continues to increase annually by 4.7%. I would like to take this opportunity to appeal to all electricity consumers to use electricity sparingly especially in winter time, (June July and August and during peak-time,” Kahimise pleaded. Mr Pinehas Mutota, Manager for Economic Regulation of the ECB said, “Increases are based on the allowed expenses of the utility which is granted by the ECB. For Erongo Red, there are major network upgrades which require a lot of investments hence the 10.2% increase that is above inflation.” He said average increases granted for the various utilities are; Northern Regional Electricity Distribution Company (Nored) 11.6%, Oshakati Premier Electric 11%, City of Windhoek 9.2%, Central North Region Electricity Distributors (CENORED) 9% and Mariental Municipality 5.6%.

DRC residents want Parliamentarians to declare assets Marshallino Beukes
Residents of the DRC Informal Settlement in Swakopmund have signed a petition and are urgently demanding that Namibian Members of Parliament declare their business assets and interests to the Speaker of the National Assembly before 31 July 2014. According to a statement, released by the residents, the declaration of the assets is important in order to reveal to the public whether there is conflict of interest, self-enrichment, corruption or abuse of office among some members of parliament who were elected by the electorate.
A national daily newspaper recently reported that the last time parliamentarians declared their assets was in 2009, as per the requirements of the Powers, Privileges and Immunities of the Parliament Act of 1996. The same newspaper further recounted the Mini-
ster of Regional Government, Housing and Rural Development, Charles Namoloh, lashing out at fellow politicians, who accumulated wealth, but save their money in offshore bank accounts and continue to buy properties there. Local artist and com-
munity activist, Mr Laidlaw Peringanda noted that he predicted during 2002 that bad governance and corruption by some senior government officials will one day lead to the downfall of the Namibian Government. He created an artwork called “Corruption in the
Namibian Parliament”, which was exhibited in the National Art Gallery of Namibia and received National and International attention. According to him, this artwork was depicting self-enrichment, corruption and conflict of interest among some members of parliament, including the President of the country. He claims that after exhibiting the artwork, death threats were made to him. A total of 248 DRC residents signed the petition and if their demand is not met by 31 July 2014, a peaceful demonstration, in front of the Parliament Building will follow, demanding an immediate answer, as to why some members of parliament are hiding or refusing to declare their assets. The letter of demand and the signed petition were sent to the Office of the Speaker of Parliament, yesterday.

A group of dedicated citizens, known as the Welwitschia Crime Prevention Team (WCPT), have come together to help prevent criminal activities in Walvis Bay. The team carried out a night patrol from Friday up to Saturday morning and intervened throughout the night where public fights erupted and the team reported to the Namibian Police when drunk/negligent drivers were seen during their patrols. The aim of the WCPT is to assist the Namibian police in helping report on reckless driving and suspicious activities. More eyes on the road mean less accidents and deaths and this weekend is a perfect example of why the community needs to become more involved in such organisations as the WCPT. In the past month, the burglary statistics in the Hermes area has been greatly reduced and one can attribute this to the actions of the WCPT. As a result of the substantial
increase in crime affecting their neighbourhood they decided to unite and help to put a stop to crime in Walvis Bay. Their main objective is to reduce crime in certain areas, to provide for effective response to criminal activity and to promote frequent communication between the Walvis Bay resident communities. “We want to be the eyes and ears for the respective officials. When we come across any unlawful activities we immediately call in the help of Nampol officers. We function within certain guidelines set out in the Constitution and Code of Conduct for the Crime Prevention Structures. We are a voluntary association,” a spokesperson said. Their duties are to report any suspicious person
Welwitschia Crime Prevention Team on duty or vehicle in the neighbourhood. Reports are done by mobile phone to the Response vehicle and to Nampol. The group is accountable to Nampol and also to the local Community Police Forum Accountability. All members have identity cards that refer to the Walvis Bay Police Station. No member may take the law into his/ her own hands. Nor may they carry any dangerous weapons that could inflict
serious bodily harm or damage to property. Should a member be found guilty of a criminal offence committed when the member is operating formally, disciplinary actions will be taken as are considered appropriate by the Committee and a public statement regarding its action will be issued. “We were relatively busy this weekend. We would like to express our gratitude towards our
sponsors that donated necessary basic equipment that we needed to operate successfully. Thank you to Mr Andre Visser and Coastal Diesel, including everyone who does not wish to be named. We appreciate every sponsor and assistance immensely,” he concluded. According to WCPT over ten accidents occurred and two deaths were reported over the past weekend.

Court Immigration Officer ACC arrests Marshallino Beukes
The fight against corrupt practices in the Erongo Region is ongoing, after another supposedly corrupt public servant, Mr Elia Muthenge Ndumba was seized by the Anti-Corruption Commission (Swakopmund) on Friday at Walvis Bay. The initial allegation against Ndumba is that acting in his capacity as an Immigration Officer based at Walvis Bay, administered illegally, intentionally and corruptly a Namibian Immigration Departure Stamp, dated 5 December 2012, as well as a Namibian Immigration Entry Stamp, on the passport of an Angolan national. The Angolan businessman allegedly entered Namibia through the Oshikango Border Post on 25 November 2012 and travelled to Walvis Bay. While in Walvis Bay he realised that the visitors Entry Permit expires on 10 December, as he was only granted 15 days to visit Namibia. The Angolan apparently went to the Immigration offices at Walvis Bay, accompanied by a friend, where they met the accused. Ndumba allegedly took
the Angolan’s passport with a completed application form and returned it at a later stage. The Angolan National realised that a Namibian Departure Stamp, dated 5 December 2012, as well as a Namibian Immigration Entry Stamp, dated 6 December 2012, were administered on his passport. At the same time he was granted a Visitor’s Entry Permit, which granted him leave to remain in Namibia until 23 December 2012. He paid N$490 to Mr Ndumba, but never received a receipt for the transaction. The identification numbers and location, which is imprinted on the Entry Date Stamp, which is supposed to indicate where the stamps were administered, was deliberately disguised, in order to conceal the identity of the Immigration official
ACC Suspect, Elia Ndumba who administered the endorsement. Nonetheless, when a senior Immigration Officer at Walvis Bay consulted the Border Control System, he established that the exit movement of the Angolan businessman was not recorded on the system, but the entry movement of the visitor, made on 6 December 2012, was recorded. With all the evidence against the accused in place the Swakopmund branch of the ACC swooped in on him and he was
subsequently taken into custody. Ndumba stands accused of bribery (ACC Act), soliciting or accepting N$490 from the Angolan citizen to make false entries into his passport. The first alternative to this charge is corruptly using his office or position for gratification. He made his first court appearance last Friday and was granted bail of N$3 000. The matter was postponed until 7 July 2014 for legal representation.

The officers undergoing the training were chosen from the Commissioners and the Chiefs of the Namibian Police Force, according to their ranks. The course will acquaint the officers with diplomacy procedures. According to the Inspector-General of the Namibian Police Force Sebastian Haitota Ndeitunga, the workshop is the first Official Police Attaché training to be held in the country and will lead the Namibian police force into a new era. The selected trainees will use the knowledge in the execution of their respective overseas duties. In his conclusion Ndeitunga urged the trainees to maintain their usual commitment during training by participating to the fullest and taking part in discussions. “I further encourage you to assist the Special Branch Directorate in formulating a comprehensive Police Attaché Policy for the Namibian Police Force,” Ndeitunga appealed to community and church leaders, schools, clubs, both private and public organisations including the ordinary citizen who see what goes on in the community.

final the team of Fox Fishing, consisting mostly of secondary school students from The Dolphin Schools, just managed to get the better of the second team of Namib Desert 4x4 club. Eighteen teams (13 corporate and five school teams) participated in the canoe races this year. The corporate contenders consisted of teams from Financial Consultant Services (FCS), Hangana, Seawork, Maersk, Namib Desert 4x4 and Western Enterprises. Last year 16 teams competed. Dolphin Schools was the defending champions.

splashing fun to participants, even some seals joined in the frantic paddling and fiercely contested rowing competition. Colliding, capsising canoes and splashing rowers resulted in the large crowd and supporters enthusiastically cheering the various teams from the shoreline. Each canoe combat team consisted of 10 rowers and had to accommodate two ladies. Team # X.T.C from The Dolphin Schools was the exception to the rule with seven girls and three boys. Each team rowed two rounds, after which the top 8 teams contested for the final. In a hotly contested

WHY? The marine resources are limited and currently some of them are overfished or over collected. It is necessary that everybody uses them wisely and carefully to secure the future harvesting needs by protecting the stock. Quantity/number of marine resources harvestable, minimum size limits of fish and crayfish that can be caught, open season etc. help to manage stocks to avoid the total disappearance of some species in our waters. Do not leave bait or fish on the beach! Either take it home or return it to the sea. This food attracts scavengers like jackals and gulls that prey on other bio-diversity. When you are back home after the holiday, it also inflates the predator population. Where can you get a license for angling, crayfish diving & bait/mussels collection?

By hulle werk dit anders.
Selfish drivers Walvis Bay: Traffic at turn-off to Narraville. In the last couple of months, the traffic at the turn-off to Narraville has become a major traffic jam in peak hours. I don’t mind waiting my turn to proceed to Swakopmund – the ignorance from other road users is what p….s me off.
We are all waiting our turn to proceed to Swakopmund or turn off to Narraville, but then you get those ignorant and selfish drivers who cannot wait their turn, that have to bypass the queue of cars and force themselves in-between. Please line up at the back
of the queue and wait until it is your turn! The Roads and Traffic division of the Municipality should drastically address the matter and find a suitable solution for all traffic user ASAP! Harms Schrader

Swakopmund model and singer, Marguerite Wieland (15) will represent Namibia at the forthcoming World Championships of Performing Arts (WCOPA) in Los Angeles, United States of America. Marguerite is a Grade 9 learner at Pro-Ed Academy. In her free time she plays Netball and Field Hockey but also sings and models. The shy teenager is not one to flaunt her talent, but once she starts strumming a guitar and singing, the sweetness of her voice captivates and soothes your soul. Her downto-earth stage presence portrays a maturity that belies her true age. She is no stranger to the entertainment industry
in Namibia and has taken part in several ramp performances such as the Bridal Expo 2013 and school fashion shows. Marguerite also participated in Miss PreTeen Namibia 2013 and was a top 10 finalist in the singing competition ‘The Voice of Namibia 2013’. However, it was at the Namibian Championships of Performing Arts (NATME), held earlier this, year that she really excelled. At the event she walked

She received five Gold medals for Spokes, Swimwear, Casual and Formal Modelling as well as Contemporary Singing, four Silver Medals for Photo modelling, Singing Jazz, Variety and Country and one Bronze medal for Gospel. Marguerite also scooped the Overall Junior Model Award. According to NATME rules, if a contestant receives at least one gold medal at the Finale they qualify to be a part of the Namibian Team that will travel to Hollywood, Los Angeles to compete with 54 other countries for the top spots of the World Championships of Performing Arts. The talented teenager
will leave on 6 July to compete against other contestants from the participating countries to take part in the prestigious event that will take place at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel in Los Angeles. The opportunity will also expose her to scouting agents who might contract her. She is currently rehearsing with her older sister Andeline (Miss TEEN Namibia 2012) to make sure she is in top condition when she graces the stage far from home. Andeline is training Marguerite based on her own previous experience and experience with winning pageant clients she has trained and tips acquired from her studies. Adeline stu-
died for a Drama degree in South Africa. Marguerite’s family has been very supportive every step of the way. A worrying factor for her though, is how she will catch up and maintain her good grades at school after being away for quite a while. Namibia has done exceedingly well at this competition and it is now evident that immense talent is hibernating in this country and there is a need to unearth the hidden talents. Marguerite’s feet are embedded in the Namibian sand and she grateful for all the sponsorship that was advanced towards her travel needs and she is hopeful that she will make Namibia proud.

Emanuel /Hara-#Gaeb (25) and Stanley Hangara (27) are artists, better known as T-Bozz and Staika by their adoring fans and have taken the Ma-/ gaisa world by storm since introducing their music genre three years ago. T- Bozz and Staika may be from different backgrounds but the love they share for music speaks volumes judging from their unity in the studio and behind the microphone. Staika is not only an artist but also a producer and is the owner of Coastal Beatz Studio in Walvis Bay that promotes various local artists. He met T-Bozz here when he came to the studio with a kwaito group that he was playing with at the time. Unfortunately the group split up, leaving T-Bozz stranded and without a group to perform with.
He chose not to give up on his dream and asked Staika to record a song for him as his producer. “I started recording a song but when I got stuck in the middle I approached Staika to help me finish the song, he said. They did the song together and instead of doing just that one song they released two singles; Ne /goas and #anapega taugub, which were instant hits. The duo was sceptical about forming a group, but the response from the public to their music is the only thing they needed and they made up their minds
Emanuel /Hara-#Gaeb and Stanley Hangara about an album and formed their group. In the middle of 2011 the duo released their first album, /Asa //aeb Ma-/gaisa meaning New era Ma-/gaisa in Walvis Bay.
Although they were not yet known when they released their first album, the album was loved by fans all over the country. Since their last release, they said the fans were
demanding another album and in order to keep them happy they gave the fans what they wanted. According to Staika they worked on the second album #Net #Net for months before
giving the admirers what they prayed for last year. The album consists of 14 tracks and they are currently busy with music videos for two of the songs on the CD.

Music wise they recently shot a music video of Gino’s songs titled Fantasy. The group will be hosting
a massive pyjama party at a club in Swakopmund in the near future. Last year the crew also hosted various great events and on the top of their list was the Gruniz new year’s party where some of the Nama nominees performed. Santos and DJ Cuzco shared some exciting and great news regarding their next big project which they are hoping will come to life in August! They are planning a big music festival which they hope will be an annual event. They are planning to have big companies on board with the festival and
they are working with an artist from South Africa to perform at the festival. The group members are grateful and feel they are blessed to be able to do what they love and to be able to do something great with their lives, and they want to give back to their community. They will be giving 30% of all the proceeds from the concert to various shelters at the coast in DRC. They said it is unbelievable how many kids are on the streets these days, and they want to play a role in taking care of these kids.

Coastal community remembers Namibian ties the knot in SA Drienie Kruger – role of Chief Riruako daughter of Fritz A march by members of the Herero and Nama communities to commemorate the death of Herero Paramount Chief Kauima Riruako took place in Swakopmund on Wednesday night.
Following the assassination of Clemens Kapuuo in 1978, Riruako assumed the role of Paramount Chief of the Herero, which he held until his death on 2 June. Riruako was a member of the Constitutional Council from 1986 to 1987 and was elected to the National Assembly of Namibia as a can-
didate of the Democ r a t i c Tu r n h a l l e Alliance (DTA) in 1994. NUDO withdrew from the DTA in 2003 and Riruako became President of NUDO on 18 September 2003. He returned to parliament in 20 March 2005 as a NUDO candidate and in October 2009 he stood as NUDO's presidential candidate. The late chief visited the memorial site of the Nama and Herero victims of the 1904 war at Swakopmund a few weeks prior to his death to commemorate 100 years since the great genocide and to renew his call to Germany to pay reparations for the lives and property lost. He is seen here praying at the grave-

site of the fallen victims of the war of 1904-1908. One of the organisers of the event, Mr Johnny Gamatham of the Nama Genocide Reparations Committee, said that the legacy of Chief Riruako should not be forgotten. Gamatham told the namib times that people should remember what Riruako stood for and that he spent the final years of his life fighting for reparations for the crimes committed by the German Empire against the Nama and Herero people during the war of 1904-1908. Chief Riruako (24 April 1935 – 2 June 2014) will receive a State funeral and will be laid to rest at the traditional burial ground of the Herero chiefs at Okahandja.
Mayor pays tribute to late Herero Chief The Death of late Chief Clemens Kapuuo was the reason it was introduced to cross cultural traditional information, and it was the very first time I learned about the traditional Chief of the Otjiherero speaking community in our country.
The benefit of the ekuru hungi revealed that significant emphasis was directed to the decorated history of Piet Uys, Dirkie Uys, Piet Retief Gerrit Maritz, Andries Potgieter, Louis Trichard, Vorster, Malan, Pienaar, Bothat etc.…. There was not much to learn except if you were included in the traditional EHUNGI, but unfortunately I was deprived by age. I continued to rely on the OMAKURU HUNGI and our elders regarding Namibian traditional history, virtues and its beautiful people passed on various bits of information and knowledge. As a nation mourns the fall of the giant I would like to be added to the list of those that have been humble to extend a tribute to the Late Paramount Chief Kuaima Riruako. The sense of loss and deep sadness should be complemented by the celebration of the life of a legend that has left clear GPS coordinates for the younger generation to achieve Unity of purpose and
economic emancipation. The few times that I have met the chief in Swakopmund left good memories of the late Chief. The very last public activity on his diary was in Swakopmund and I had the honor and privilege to have knelt down as a sign of respect that is also custom to our Aakwanilwa (Komuthigululwakalo Gwaawambo) During our dinner that evening I respectfully excused myself as a sign of respect being again a cross-traditional custom, I also would not be able to invite myself to a dinner with our Omukwaniilwa. I have learned the importance of traditional virtues and obligation of each individual that we have to fight for our standing in society by pledging to Unity in diversity as well as tolerance to different views. It is a custom to extend condolences, however there is always an obligation to each individual to self-reflect and to pledge a contribution to the legacy of
the late Chief. Wednesday evening at the Swakopmund Commando, I participated in the joy of celebrating the life of the hero and the pledge to extend selfless contribution for the common good of our Swakopmund community. I feel highly privileged to have been given the honour to contribute on behalf of our International Holiday Resort the holiday City of Swakopmund our heartfelt condolences and a RIP message to the NUDO PARTY, the Ova Herero Traditional authorities, the leaders of the Omarapi jetatu and indeed the Community of Swakopmund, Hentiesbay, Walvisbay and Arandis. To the Entire Riruako family especially to the widow we have sent a special message with Dr Hoze Riruako expressing our heartfelt condolences and best wishes. May the soul of our Paramount Chief rest in peace. Juuso Kambueshe, Mayor
and Rheta Smeer wedded recently in Midrand, Gauteng, South Africa. Fritz and Rheta (Krappie as her friends know her) are co-owners of Waterbay Woods in Walvis Bay and went all the way to South Africa for the wedding of their daughter. Months of planning, mostly via phone, internet and other media came to a head on the day. After the serious formalities were done, the real party began in earnest. The couple, commonly known for wearing serious business faces, showed the South African guests the flipside of their personalities and how a party should be enjoyed. Rheta, or Krappie, demonstrated the proper use of a “Harry Potter” broom. Every-
body present got new respect for Krappie and Waren (now husband of Drienie) explained to his wife that he would rather have her sweep the floors with the broom and not take “tips” from her mother. Drienie wisely explained to both that she will use the broom for
decoration only. Fritz had his moments and at speech time was the first to entertain the guests with his stories and toast to the newlyweds. After the wedded pair opened the dance floor Fritz also demonstrated the “Walvis dance” for the guests to
everybody's de-light. This was a unique wedding and people from different corners of the country enjoyed it. Fritz and Rheta enjoyed their away time from the business. We congratulate them and are proud to be part of their family.

Six months to save for holidays
“How time flies, say many people and it is a fact that we are already halfway through 2014 and many people are possibly planning and looking forward to a long welldeserved December holiday,” says Ester Kali, Executive of Retail and Business Banking at FNB Namibia.
Booking holidays late in the year often means paying higher rates for travelling and accommodation, making holidays a pricey affair. “We often forget to factor our holidays into our budgets throughout the year which results in us having to tap into debt, or rely on a big bonus in order to make holiday payments and, at worst, postpone or not go on a well-deserved break when the end of the year comes around,” said Kali. With less than six months to go to the end of the year, now is the time to start planning. “As with any other savings goal, it is a good idea to open a separate savings or investments account specifically for this goal, and deposit money every month,” says Kali. “This is a great way of ensuring that you always have funds available for when that holiday or flight special pops up in your e-mail inbox.” She continued to say that people should assess how quickly they would need access to their money. “Due to the nature of planning a holiday, it is often a good idea to take a two pronged approach,” advises Kali. “Depending on the amount of time you have to save, you can split the money to an immediate access account as well as a fixed
deposit account that releases the rest of your funds in time for your trip. By doing this you will have easy access to funds in the event that special travel offers pop up, whilst you will still earn a higher interest on the funds in the fixed deposit.” Kali continued to say that investing a portion of interest earned on other savings accounts into a travel savings account could be a way in which to reach holiday savings goals faster if people have limited time to save. “Before doing so however, it is crucial to ensure that there will be adequate funds available for other expenses and possible unforeseen circumstances and emergencies,” she cautions. “When opening an account, remember that some accounts will not allow continual deposits and that penalty fees on early or exceeded number of withdrawals can quickly chip away at any savings made.” In conclusion Kali said: “Remember that a holiday remains a luxury and that it should never come at the expense of your everyday living or emergency savings. If you are unable to save up in time for your holiday, rather consider postponing until you are able fund it primarily by saving up.”

Archie Botha (left) and Tienie Botha

Bertus Hanekom wins Seniors Golf Day Last Thursday the senior golfers gathered for the June month-end competition, as always kindly sponsored by Ocean View Spar. The co-sponsors for June were Dieter Gudehus and Vic Moll. After the recent heavy east winds, Thursday was again an absolutely perfect day for golf. This was also reflected in the excellent scores that the guys were able to play. This month’s winner, all the way from Henties Bay, was Bertus Hanekom with 41 points. In second place and winner of the count-out was Francois Loots with 38 points. Third place
was Hakkies Husselmann, another Henties Bayer, who also had 38 points. Francois had the only 2 club on the day and the “JoCo” honours go to Hein Coetzer. Captain Bruce Burns congratulated the Coastal Seniors that played in the annual Klippenberg golf day last weekend. This is always a tightly contested tournament between the coastal and
central senior golfers. However this year the coastal guys brought home all the trophies with Tienie van Rensburg winning the individual competition and the team of Tienie, Christo Botha and Tim Botha winning the Fanie Augustyn trophy. This competition was once again very generously sponsored by Bernard and Engela from the Karibib OK.
Rossmund Golf Club News In a howling gale force east wind of about 40km/hour, 60 men and 7 lady golfers bravely turned out to play for the much sought after Swakopmund Open Golf Title, on Saturday 21 June. Well done, it is the very first time in its history that the start of the ‘Open’ had to be delayed due to the adverse weather conditions. But the enthusiasm was there, the competitive spirit was there, a memorable day was had by all who participated and there were very few withdrawals. Most important, Multichoice Namibia did their very best to sponsor this annual event, thank you Mr Roger Gertze. First the ladies. L Brink won with a net score of 83, followed by C Els with 86. Gross: W Calitz (106), and winner, C Els (88). Men’s ‘C’ Division – Net Winner: E Uushona with 78, runner-up R Barnard on 81. Gross: S Tsubeb (96) and winner I Suze (87). ‘B’ Division Net Winner: M Ludeke with 113 and D Benson with 114. Gross: T Haimbondi (130) and winner W Profit (127). ‘A ‘ Division - Net: Winner S van der Merwe with 116, and K Wentzel with 117. Gross: B Britten (122) and winner D Haimbondi (119).
Overall: Net winner E Mulombelewa with 106 and runner up P Shimoshili with 109. Gross; S Bonifatius (114) and winner G Shikodi (112). On the same day, five of our Swakop Senior golfers headed to Karibib to compete in the annual ‘Central vs Coast’ match, for the Fanie Augustyn inter Branch Trophy. Having lost the match in 2013, our Seniors Team (depleted by the poor weather) managed to bring the coveted trophy back to Swakomund. The widow of the late Fanie Augustyn presented the trophy, which for the first time was named in honour of her late husband, whose family - OK Supermarket (in Karibib) has sponsored the trophy for many years. They donated generous prizes and we thank them for their ongoing support and sponsorship. Well done; T van Rensburg, was the overall winner and the Swakop ‘team‘included T Botha and C Botha.
Last weeks’ Wednesday competition, again sponsored by Brigadoon B and B was poorly supported, but the 18 hole winner was J Kok, runner up H Blom, and the best 9, won by P Bassingthwaighte. See you next Wednesday with a new sponsor for July. A reminder, 9 Hole players must play the back nine for the competition this week – tomorrow. Saturday was our monthly ‘feeshing ‘competition – again by kind sponsorship of Novanam. The Medal play winners were: Ladies - Ms E Burns. Junior - L Nandi (70): ‘C’Division - C Haoseb (72): ‘B‘ Division - M Swarts ( 79), and ‘ A ‘ Division - P Shomolshili ( 69). Overall E Bonifatius (68) Weather a little cooler, but it was another good monthend Competition – thanks Novanam. “Golf is not a game of great shots. It’s a game of the most accurate misses. The people, who win, make the smallest mistakes.” (Gene Littler)

Namib Diesel Social League Squash Notes Eyeing the world cup out of one eye and checking updates on SuperBru, while wracking the brains for last week’s Socials. With one week to go to the penultimate and final rounds Fuel Pump Repairs Africa, even with Cliffy out this week, is well set in first place. It’s doubtful that any of the other teams will catch them, so for the others it’s basically going to be a tough battle for the 2nd and 3rd slots. The results for Wednesday the 25th were as follows: Seawork (1) vs. Fuel Pump Repairs Africa (5): Trevor Grane vs Clifford de Witt 2-3. A match I would have loved to have watched. It seems Trev played a superb game and Cliffy had to switch on the reserves to take it. Jacques de Villiers vs Borja Romero 2-3. Another close match. Borja definitely did not have everything his own way. Doyle de Haas vs Amanda Beukes 0-3. Amanda conserved energy with economical play. Hein Bam vs Theuns van Zyl 0-3. Theuns also economically ‘phutt –phutted’
to victory. Alberto Canalles vs Anneke Grobler 3-1. Alberto worked up a swell and dumped Anneke. Bruce Stewart vs Goretti Jansen 1-3. Goretti is well on top of her game at the moment. Stefan’s magic is finally coming to fore. Leslie Bosman vs Danie Jansen 2-3. A tough encounter and a Supa result for Les. Ze de Britto vs Brandon Grane 3-1. Supa Ze! Bykes Muashekele vs Jorn Wormsbacher 0-3. Jorn took a magic win. Pieter Beukes vs Arlene Visser 3-0. Nothing disjointed about Pieter’s play. Louisa Liebenberg vs Ester Meyer 3-1. Louisa’s Supaness nullifying the magic on the court. Steel Africa [3] vs Coastal Car Hire [3]: Jan de Smit vs Sergio Figueiredo 0-3. Serg pulled off a great win for CCH. Sharde Fisher vs Wynand Breytenbach 1-3. Wynie sparkled on the court. Lucinda Rodri-
Oscar Fernandez (Coastal Car Hire) & Blackie Zwart (Steel Africa)
gues vs Joseph Payne 3-1. A typical divine performance from Lucy. Blackie Zwart vs Oscar Fernandez 3-0. Blackie hit hard and fast with an iron fist. Chris Bruyns vs Johan Swanepoel 2-3. A tough battle, Chris eventually bent under the pressure. Elsje van der Merwe vs Sam Webster 3-2. Quite abit of expansion under the heat of play, but Elsje’s steely determination gave her the match. FCS (3) vs Gateway Shipping (3): Imanuel Amorongo vs Phillip de Villiers 3-1. Coach showed how it’s done. Gerhard Lottering vs. Richard van der Meer 3-1. Wow, Gerhard’s game has really taken off in leaps and bounds. Trevor Heath vs Matt-
hys Robberts 3-1. A gold star for Trev’s play. Carla Cummings vs Hennie Koelman 0-3. Hennie guarded the Gateway with very efficient effectiveness. Christo van Wyk vs Bertus Fokkens 2-3. Wotta match. Bertus 2 love down slowly but surely closed the gap and took a great win. Carmen Pascual vs Jacques Serfontein 1-3. Jacques took no chances. Three rounds to go and the points standing is as follows; Fuel Pump Repairs Africa - 81, Supatronix - 63, Gateway Shipping 63, Coastal Car Hire 62, FCS - 61, Seawork - 58, Steel Africa - 53 & Magic Discounters - 39. Cheers!
