The special relationship between humans and dolphins was in the spotlight on Friday morning, after the news that several beached dolphins had been spotted by tour guides at around 07:00, outside Walvis Bay, on the way to the salt pans. They were stuck in the shallow water about 200 meters offshore. People immediately notified the Namibia Dolphin Project

(NDP) team of the incident. Before long many Walvis Bay residents were on the scene, waiting to assist the group to get the

seven bottlenose dolphins back into deeper waters. The salvage operation was driven by Barry McGovern and his Dolphin Pro-

ject Team. The dolphins were clearly stressed. Helpers kept the dolphins wet while they waited for each of the dolphins to

get pulled on a sail and dragged with eight men on each side to get them back in the water. McGovern told the namib

President Hage Geingob warned Erongo residents, especially the youth, at a community meeting in Swakopmund on Friday, not to take the peace and stability the country currently offers, for granted. Senior citizens, women, people living with disabilities, the business fraternity and the youth topped the President’ agenda at this historical gathering. “People like peace and stability, but they cannot eat it and people need affordable and decent shelter. However, Hage can’t do it alone, and we need to work as a team,” the president opened his dialogue. “How can one living in a nice house be happy while your neighbours are suffering, sleeping on the streets and in shacks? “Geingob asked.

This, according to him, is the reason why he has declared war against poverty and initiated the Ministry of Poverty Eradication and Social Welfare, which is currently busy putting foodbanks in place, all over the country. The importance and empowering of women and mothers in particular were also underlined by the President. Burning community issues which were brought under Geingob’s attention included the fact that the Erongo youth are apparently excluded from development

and a request for a Youth Centre in Walvis Bay was also aired. Furthermore the youth accused local councillors of not doing anything for the region’s youth. The police and state hospital were also accused of poor service deliverance. The lack of special schools for people with disabilities in the Erongo Region is of big concern, and was noted by the president. The representative of the people living with disabilities also aired concerns regarding the absence of sign language interpreters Continues on page 2

Three Brave Swakopmunders Cross English Channel over Weekend Continued from page 1 taking on an extraordinary task of swimming across the English Channel AND back again... A distance no less than 90kms and at least 30 hours in the water.” But it is clear that they are extraordinary. They swam to raise the awareness, and although they could not do the Back leg – they have conquered the Channel in a Big Way. The team posted on their Facebook early Sunday morning, after their successful crossing from Britian to France, “It’s 3:38am. Will post tomorrow about why we couldn’t turn and swim back “ Yesterday they shared their report … “Waiting this week has been highly frustrating and nerves were raw. The weather forecast is just that, a forecast but seldom

accurate enough for swimming purposes. A single crossing needs a 12 hour window because that’s the anticipated crossing time and we needed double that. We lost our slot so were making plans to cancel and change flights but we also had to put a cap on how long we could hang around and wait. We decided Friday the 4th September was our cap but the forecast to Friday was bleak. Our time slot 26-28 August never gave a clear 24hour window and we had a swimmer booked the day after us. The weather improved on his day but only for 12 hours. For next week it looked worse. Fortunately for us he gave up his slot the night before but despite trying to call us Fred

could not get through (network issues) so he called at 7:15am to say we should be ready at 9am. It was a frantic scramble. The day started ‘swimmable’ but never flat but we had to take what we could knowing that it was this or nothing. Not once could we get into any rhythm, we were chucked around all over the show and the boat rolled excessively in the swell. You could see the other side of the boat from the water when it rolled so much. Despite the weather we progressed well but from the start we knew we were gambling on a 2 way... we had serious discussions with both Fred and Harry about the forecast and they confirmed that if the night would have been a booked

swim slot then they would have told that swimmer to hang on. 20 knots of wind were forecast for the return leg and that is still manageable in the day time but the night brings a whole bunch of other elements and risks. Once our prop nearly got tangled in broken off fish nets (that would spell disaster). It was full moon but the weather built up and we were in relative darkness with just glow sticks to light up the swimmer and the side of the boat. It takes some mental strength to swim in that knowing there are possible nets, jelly fish, ropes, floating debris and funny seaweed to swim into. We seriously weighed up everything. Do we stop at a successful one way or turn and battle and maybe make

a two way but the price of that was a N$50 000 gamble (the additional cost of the second leg). The biggest factor was safety and that made it an easy decision in the end. I’m (we’re) not disappointed one bit. There are no set answers when dealing with the elements and decisions need to be made as you go and as things unfold. Today I still feel that we made the right decision. After all... this swim was to draw attention to our greater cause which is to protect our beaches and I think we drew more than enough at-

tention. So don’t stop following us just because the swim is over... there’s more to life than personal achievement. We want to continue swimming off clean beaches and so our Strokes for Earth campaign continues... We never imagined the support throughout our swim and it’s just a pity we lost reception half way across. 1 000 thank you’s to those who followed us and kept each other entertained.” For the full report see the namib times facebook page.

“Don’t take peace and stability for granted” – Geingob Continued from page 1 at public facilities, like hospitals and police stations. It was also noted that skills development for disabled persons is not on par. With the raise in old age pension grants in mind, the president was requested to look into the fact that single mothers still only receive a mere N$250 per month from the government. An ex-prisoner reminded

the President of his promise, entailing that no Namibian should be left out. “Are we as ex-prisoners with a criminal record not Namibians?” the president was asked. According to the speaker, ex-prisoners are suffering because they can’t get employed in the public, as well as the private sector. He also mentioned that

government job application forms make provision for a question, asking if the applicant has a criminal record, which, if answered yes upon, will immediately cut any chance of getting the job. Community members also noted the lack of training for mining operators in the country, which according to them is the reason why

Beached Dolphins saved Continued from page 1 to get fish and the adults went after them to protect them, and they got stranded.” When namib times arrived, we had to go into the muddy waters to reach them where they were being pulled through ditches to get them back safely into the water. An interesting fact is that research on Dolphins has shown that they are excellent caretakers and will typically lend a fin when needed. They spend every possible moment with their calves for years. They have the support of others in the pod to assist them through the parenting process. McGovern confirmed that it was most probable that the five adults went after the two babies because of their deeply caring nature. The salvage operation

It is like this team understands the Dolphin language took about two hours. Those involved were clearly deeply touched by the interaction between the distressed dolphins and the humans who were trying to help them – and everybody was clearly elated when all seven were back where they belonged. “This was a huge effort from all the locals who came to help and we just want to thank everyone for giving a hand. A special mention to the guys from Atlantic Refrigeration, Anchors Restau-

rant, Sandwich Harbour 4x4 and Ocean Adventures - and of course our NDP interns,” McGovern concluded. The coastal community is reminded of the special Namibian Strandings Network’s number – If you spot a whale, dolphin or turtle on the beach, call 081 687 6461… if no one answers, send and SMS with the date, time, what you spotted, where exactly, and whether it is dead or alive, and if you can or could assist.

foreigners get these jobs. Fishing quotas for the youth, pensioners’ health care services and also the people living in the DRC informal settlement’s con-

cerns were brought to President Geingob’s attention. The president’s advisors and several ministers accompanied him, and all these matters were noted

and will be followed up. Any further questions or concerns can be addressed to the office of the Erongo Governor, Mr Cleophas Mutjavikua.

President orders Esau to apologise for Iyambo remarks SWAKOPMUND, 30 AUGUST - President Hage Geingob on Friday ordered Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources Bernhard Esau to apologise for what he said about the late Abraham Iyambo, who previously served as fisheries minister. “Comrade Esau I have learnt about the nasty article in the newspapers. I want you to apologise about what you said. Sometimes journalists misquote us but if you know you have said it, you must apologise,” the President said during a meeting with political and traditional leaders at Swakopmund on Friday. An article in the Namibian newspaper last week said Esau accused some fishing companies such as Namsov Fishing Enterprises and the Namibia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI) of using Iyambo. He said this will not happen with him. “Maybe they controlled the previous minister. We fought for this country and for the fair distribution of our resources. I was not born to cowards and I won’t be a coward,” Esau said.

The story developed from the National Council during the debate on the amendments to the Marine Resources Act of 2000 to give sole power to the minister in the allocation of fishing quotas. Esau was responding to Namibia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Tarah Shaanika; NCCI vice president Sebby Kankondi; and lawyer Shakespeare Masiza, who called for transparency in the allocation of quotas and consultation before amendments are made to the fishing laws. Responding to Geingob’s order on Friday, the minister stood up and said “I was forced to respond and I admit and apologise for going overboard. I did not intend to offend anyone for saying what he (Iyambo) did cannot be compared to what we are doing. May his

soul rest in peace”. The story was not received well by members of the public, who sent text messages to the Namibian newspaper saying the minister was wrong to make such statements. People said the late Iyambo should not be discussed as he is not here to defend himself. Esau also repeated his apology when the President held a public meeting with members of the Swakopmund community at the Tamariskia Town Hall the same day. “I would like to take this opportunity to say sorry for what I said in the newspaper. May his soul rest in peace and let the struggle for economic emancipation continue,” said the minister. Iyambo died in February 2013. (NAMPA) PKS/AS NAMPA

Gala Dinner- Walvis Bay Kruisdraer wil Suide toe Corridor Group Sharlien Tjambari

On Thursday evening, 27 August, the coastal community and invited guests from across the country witnessed a very important milestone in the history of the Walvis Bay Corridor Group - their 15th annual celebrations took place at the Hotel and Entertainment Centre in Swakopmund, where President Hage Geingob was the Guest of Honour.

During the gala dinner, the Chairman of the Walvis Bay Corridor Group, Mr Bisey Uirab said since its establishment, the Walvis Bay Corridor Group’s agenda had always been driven to support the country’s national imperative of promoting Namibia’s trade with that of the neighbouring SADC countries. “The time is ripe to transform our Transport Corridors into economic development corridors in line with our Nation’s Growth at Home Strategy so that they could ultimately be-

come a network of supply and distribution channels linked to our key strategic port - the Port of Walvis Bay.” According to Uirab, the port is ideally located to accelerate growth in Namibia and the SADC as a whole, by providing a gateway to the region through the Namibia Logistics Hub. He says we are a country of just over 2 million people and the development of the Nation’s infrastructure of new port facilities, new airports, road and rail infrastructure will undoubtedly

give the nation that competitive edge to realise the dream of becoming a logistics hub for the 300 million inhabitants of the SADC. During the celebration, the President introduced his advisors and the ministers who accompanied him on the tour to Erongo. Among his advisors present, were Dr Rudy van Vuuren, the President’s doctor, Penny Akwenye, the policy advisor to the President and John Steytler, the economic advisor to the President.

Bience Gawanas inspires Narraville women Liesl Losper

Ninety women gathered at the Narraville Primary School this weekend to have a cup of tea with Advocate Bience Gawanas and Ms Theresia Samaria, in celebration of Women’s Month. It was a platform for the women to discuss business ideas and also to share their experiences with each other – but mostly, especially receive advice from Gawanas, on how they can improve themselves financially. “Some of the ladies have requested another meeting with the Ministry of Trade, and a repeat next year the same month to celebrate women month. As far as I could see it was worth the while, as many shared experiences of how they became successful

business women and they also exchanged contact details,” Theresia Samaria said as organiser of this event. After the talk the women discussed their business ideas with Gawanas and they also received some good advice “I have dis-

cussed my existing business and shortcomings with the advocate and I have received advice that I will definitely follow and I believe by implementing this advice it will better my business. It felt good to know that Narraville women is also

important and that there is assistance for us also.” One of the women that attended, commented afterwards. “I expected 100 women and 90 turned up. Swapo Nangolo Mbumba Branch would like to thank the sponsors, Bart Reiman and

The women enjoyed the tea party family, Una’s catering, Toenise Mouton, Hansa Breweriers, Mr Bauers, Janine Straus, Melissa Shanjengange, Charles Neidel, Carmen Forbes and Yo-

women in Narraville to accomplish more out of their existing business and also those that want to start creating a business,” said Ms Samaria.

Police, state hospitals in crossfire Marshallino Beukes Concerns regarding supposed poor service and harassment put the Erongo police and state health facilities in the limelight at a community meeting, addressed by President Hage Geingob in Swakopmund, last Friday.

Minister Bernard Haufiku

According to a representative of the Erongo youth, some nurses at state health facilities are very rude with patients and show no sign of compassion. He noted that especially youths at the hospital’s maternity ward is being bullied and treated with no respect. In the same breath he remarked that police officers in the regions trend to harass the youth, not giving them a chance to talk or explain a situation. Commenting on the health facility-issue, the Minister of Health and Social Services, Dr Berhard Haufiku, noted that each state hospital and health care facility have received booklets, guiding them in the Ministries quest for excellent service. He indicated that he, himself, has experienced poor

service at Katutura Clinic in Windhoek, only a few days ago. According to him he received a complaint regarding one of the nurses there, and tried to call her personally. This nurse allegedly refused to answer his phone call. “If I had the power to dismiss an employee, I would have done it,” the Minister said. He went on, saying that their Ministry is currently busy with a turn-around strategy plan in order to create a brand new culture of service deliverance. “Action against culprits should be taken immediately, otherwise others will follow suit,” he warned. Minister Haufiku spoke highly about the Usakos state hospital, mentioning that this health institution is

the cleanest in the Erongo region. Omaruru, he noted, has some of the best doctors (public and private) in the country. He informed the community that Swakopmund will soon get a brand new Regional hospital, depending on the availability of land. He concluded by noting that private and public practitioners should try to take hands and work together for the benefit of the country’s health. The Minister of Presidential Affairs, Mr Frans Kapofi fumed that the type of alleged behaviour by police officers is unacceptable. “Civil servants are not the bosses, they are the people’s servants,” he noted. He also urged the general public to immediately report such cases.

Commissioner Samuel /Hoebeb The Erongo police chief, Commissioner Samuel / Hoebeb explained that all police officers, from their basic training onwards, are being drilled in the fact that they are the people’ servants and should behave accordingly.

“However, it seems if they are not taking note. I truly regret it that some individuals are giving a bad name to the Police Force and I will definitely address this serious issue,” /Hoebeb concluded.

“TIPS to prevent housebreaking & Theft, robberies and related cases

Community Affairs Officer Sergeant Ileni Shapumba writes for us – Yes, Once a week The Community Policing Department angages with the community and shares valuable advice…

“In our quest to combat economic crime, we shall continue to share tips with our community with the aim to encourage you to play a role in protecting yourself and your properties against potential criminals. We continue, however to discourage unethical businesses among our people. We warn those who engage themselves in the market of stolen properties to cease these criminal practices. Also, we want to warn all taxi drivers who continue to provide any means of transport to criminals, sometimes even when seeing that potential criminals are being pursued by the police. These deliberate acts are totally unacceptable! In order to fight Housebreaking and potential theft cases, let us:

Avoid leaving the windows of the house open when sleeping or away from home. This is a customary known concern, as most criminals gain access to the premises through open windows. Avoid allowing strangers onto your premises anytime, especially at late hours. Avoid inviting street vendors into your house. Easily, do not trust strangers, jobseekers or persons who pretend to look for directions. Always keep a reasonable distance. Criminals do conduct research, they study security of your properties and how best they can get away easily then, before committing a crime. Avoid keeping too much cash money at homes In most cases criminals

Court

are provided with information regarding safety of properties, including cash. We strongly discourage against keeping large amounts of money at home. This attracts thieves and promotes criminal activities. Avoid keeping TV on throughout the night. Some criminals target expensive items such as flat screen TVs which are mostly sold easily without proof of ownership. Most flat screen TVs are believed to be exported to other countries, while others are used locally at entertainment places. We want to warn against furniture stores’ employees who are suspected of supplying fake receipts as proofs to stolen items (televisions) that their actions are illegal. Avoid building trust with employees to extremes.

Do security check-ups, request CVs and ID copies of your employees. Always know where your employee reside. Avoid leaving your house keys with employees for more than 30 minutes to avoid duplication. Some of the employees collaborate with criminals by giving information to criminals. While others return to commit crimes at houses where they were previously employed. Avoid leaving your residence unoccupied. An unoccupied or unguarded property is susceptible to theft. Avoid leaving the key(s) in the door when you go to bed. Some criminals gain entries to premises through thin points such as small windows and roofs. This may be difficult for them

Report cases, open criminal cases and be available at criminal proceeding. Keep the house doors locked at all times. This makes it difficult for unknown persons to enter premises or see the content of the house. Use trusted technicians to secure alarms and other protective measure devices and make sure that this is properly fixed. Whenever you are leaving your premises for more than three (3) days, notify the Police to conduct random/regular patrols. The owner contacted the newspaper and announced that the vehicle in question does in fact belong to him, but that he was not involved in the accident at all. He alleged that he was at the Waterfront with friends and that one of them asked him for the keys of the car so that

she can go and fetch her handbag from the vehicle. Only later did he hear that she apparently

decided to drive the car and ended up seriously damaging it.

“Moewiese Feeste - VISkriklik lekker!” - Henties Hengelfees “Sukses”

5

HARBOUR & ENVIRONMENT

Obtaining Fishing

Permits

WHY? The marine resources are limited and currently some of them are overfished or over collected. It is necessary that everybody uses them wisely and carefully to secure the future harvesting needs by protecting the stock. Quantity/number of marine resources harvestable, minimum size limits of fish and crayfish that can be caught, open season etc. help to manage stocks to avoid the total disappearance of some species in our waters. Do not leave bait or fish on the beach! Either take it home or return it to the sea. This food attracts scavengers like jackals and gulls that prey on other bio-diversity. When you are back home after the holiday, it also inflates the predator population. Where can you get a license for angling, crayfish diving & bait/mussels collection?

Save the Rhino Trust and Wilderness Safaris Renew Partnership until 2020 Save the Rhino Trust Namibia (SRT) and Wilderness Safaris Namibia have strengthened their shared commitment to securing a future for Namibia’s black rhinos by extending their Memorandum of Understanding for a further five years. In 2003, SRT and Wilderness Safaris began pioneering responsible rhino tourism through a unique partnership whereby SRT would provide a tracking experience for guests at Wilderness Safaris’ Desert Rhino Camp (DRC). Tourism income supports the SRT team based at DRC and includes a bed-levy donation. Effectively, tourism provides sustainable funding to ensure all the rhino within the DRC area are consistently monitored; 12 years on, this relationship is more critical than ever. The latest MoU also includes support and cooperation at Wilderness Safaris’ Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp and the Mudorib Gate. “With poaching intensifying in Namibia, SRT’s relationship with Wilderness Safaris is critical on many levels,” stressed Simson Uri-Khob, CEO of SRT. “Funding from Wilderness allows us to keep another full team of trackers in the field. These trackers monitor rhinos in an important conservation area, raising awareness of the urgent conservation issues fa-

cing rhinos with Wilderness Safaris’ international guests; and, critically acting as a deterrent against poaching in these difficult times.” DRC is situated within the Palmwag Concession in the middle of one of Africa’s last great wilderness areas. SRT has operated in this area since it was founded in 1982 and with the support from local communities, the rhino population has grown and expanded. Wilderness Safaris maintains an exclusive concession area here, with agreements in place with the Big Three conservancies, Torra, Anabeb and Sesfontein, and with the Ministry of Environment and Tourism.

“There is an important element of security in this exclusive concession agreement,” said Uri-Khob. “We know who should be in the area and who shouldn’t. This helps us protect the rhino.” “Wilderness Safaris is committed to conservation,” added Mike Wassung, CEO of Wilderness Safaris Namibia. “Our track record of supporting local communities through jointventure partnerships and providing jobs and training to people who live in the remote areas where we operate helps us to work collectively to uplift communities and that in turn helps to protect Namibia’s natural resources.

We are proud of this record and to be a longterm supporter of SRT’s efforts to conserve the world’s last truly wild population of black rhino.” The partnership between SRT and Wilderness Safaris is a strong example of the importance of Namibia’s private sector and conservation groups working together to protect the

country’s natural resources. “We are confident that by working together and strengthening our partnership for at least another five years, we will continue to make a positive contribution to ensure the ongoing survival of our black rhino,” concluded Wassung and Uri-Khob.

Spar collects money for tomorrow’s heroes

Mavourlene !Gaës The Walvis Bay Spar collected donations amounting to N$7 680 under the theme “Your donation will help us invest in Namibia’s future by supporting our young heroes” on Heroes day last week Wednesday. help the children. Sonja Blaauw from the Jonah Home for Children accepted the cheque and expressed her gratitude towards Spar for their generosity. “I want to thank you so much for what you have done, you won’t know how much it means to us.” Jonah Home for Children is operating from Jonker Afrikaner Street no 20.

They currently have nine boys and four girls in their care. According to Blaauw all 13 of the children were placed in the Home through court orders. “We get a small allowance from the Government for each of the children and the rest of the time we depend on donations.” She added that all the children are currently attend-

ing school and that they have a housemother and two caregivers who work in shifts to help take care of the children. Spar would like to give their heartfelt thanks to those who gave the little donation they had for the “Let’s Grow Tomorrow’s Heroes” fund collection.

According to the Manager of Spar, Nelia Thiart the money they collected went to Jonah Home for Children in the harbour town. “We chose Jonah Home for Children as our charity after I asked different people and realised they were the least known children's home and we wanted to help them.” Thiart added that the little they could collect will

A media statement issued by the Minister of Information and Communication Technology, Tjekero Tweya on Friday said funds generated from trophy hunting are utilised for wildlife conservation locally. “Cabinet has noted with serious concern that in the aftermath of the shooting of Cecil the lion in Zimbabwe by an American trophy hunter, international organisations are advocating for a ban on trophy hunting. “As a result some airlines have already banned the transportation of products from protected huntable game,” the statement said. Almost 20 major international airlines and carriers, including Delta, United Airlines, Air

Canada and Air France changed their shipment policies to exclude hunting trophies following the international outcry caused by the death of Cecil the lion in Zimbabwe at the hands of an American trophy hunter in July 2015. Minister of Environment and Tourism, Pohamba Shifeta has also previously warned that the ban on trophy hunting and the shipping of hunting trophies will have dire consequences, not only for the Namibian economy, but also

for the country’s renowned conservation efforts. Tweya said Cabinet has directed the Ministry of Environment and Tourism to follow closely the developments in this regard and update Cabinet at appropriate times. He also said Cabinet has commended the security forces for increasing their efforts in apprehending criminals involved in the illegal hunting of Namibian wildlife. He said these efforts will go a long way to-

wards restoring law and order in the protection of the country’s natural resources. “Cabinet approved and commended the collaboration and team work that is being carried out by the Ministries of Environment and Tourism, Safety and Security, Defence and Namibian Central Intelligence Services (NCIS) in the illegal hunting of our wildlife,” Tweya said. He further said Cabinet has directed the Ministry of Environment and Tourism to make use of

technology to monitor and assist security personnel in apprehending suspected poachers, noting the progress in the establishment of a anti-poaching unit within the ministry. Cabinet in addition urged community members, traditional leaders, regional councils and parliamentarians living in the affected areas to condemn illegal hunting and cooperate with the security forces in curbing illegal hunting. Letter from Visitor

Thys of the Swakopmund Skydiving Club forwarded this letter to us to share with our readers…..thank you, Thys! Here is the little story I have to tell to whoever wants to read it. I am a 66 year old woman who was at the end of a 56 day trek through Africa on a truck. What more fitting way than to end on a high note. I went along with Vanessa a young Australian to the flying club. On Saturday the 22nd August we arrived at Swakopmund sky diving club we were met by a happy and jovial bunch of people Thys and Derrick were our tandem instructors. We were briefed and ready to fly when all of a sudden we could see that a sky diver was in trouble. We watched horrified as this little club shot into action immediately to where Eddie their most experienced divers had hit the ground and fast. The next couple of hours was watched by Vanessa and I whilst the crew searched for the reasons by scrutinising every small detail as to why this should have happened. Rarely does one see such professionalism at a time of crisis but these guys were

amazing. We believed Eddie had survived but had two broken legs but subsequently it appears he was not seriously injured at all. Only a very experienced diver could have survived such an accident. Speedy recovery Eddie your reputation precedes you. After the accident my decision was not to jump but Vanessa was stoic in her decision to jump. As the energy lifted in the club house and our feelings were that the instructors, photographers pilot and ourselves really did need to jump and jump we did. Thys was my instructor and Brett my photographer and they were both brilliant. I wasn’t one bit nervous because of how well we were cared for from start to finish. I think Vanessa and I were pretty brave and by the time we had had a drink and a chat we left this amazing club feeling more like family than friends.!! Take care Maureen

Under-19 Cricket Momentum Week Walvis Bay Private School participates The Windhoek Gymnasium U19 cricket team has successfully defended their title at the Momentum Week. The boys kept an upper hand against the Windhoek Afrikaanse Privaatskool (WAP) in the final on Sunday, while also triumphing over Pro-Ed in the T20 Challenge finals on Monday in the capital. The prestigious tournament kicked-off last week with three games being played in various formats each day. The Momentum Week is widely considered to be one of the best development events in Namibia even if it was only established three years

ago. This year’s edition gave a special note to the tournament as a large portion of the youngsters that will represent Namibia at the U19 World Cup in Bangladesh next year show-cased their skills. Other schools that participated were

Windhoek High School, Walvis Bay Private School and a “Platteland” invitational team. Windhoek Gymnasium’s quest for a second successive title was evident from the very beginning as they marched from win to win. Their victory was

not only down to the exceptional team performances by the Gymnasium, but also to their two stand-out players Niko Davin and Charl Brits as evident by their statistics. Davin was the highest scoring batsmen, scoring a total of 265 runs. On average, he

scored 51 runs per innings. His team mate Brits, on the other hand, was the most successful bowler. The talented youngster took 10 wickets in 29 overs, conceded 74 runs with an economy rate of 2.6, as confirmed by the event organisers.

Meanwhile Tiaan Steenkamp from Windhoek High School was chosen as the player of the tournament. Steenkamp was not only one of the best batsman with 315 runs at an average of 45 runs per innings, but he also took 9 wickets in 33 overs, conceded 168

runs with an economy rate of 4.8. Cricket Namibia (CN) wished to thank Momentum for their continues support of this event. The attention now turns to the Momentum Schools League which is set to start next week.

Rossmund Golf news Hi there from a very windy but sunny Rossmund - what a relief to see the sunshine again - after what has been a really long cold spell. Those in the know would probably tell you that the moon was full, the sea was very angry so a change was to be expected. Saturday 22 August our team of five representatives set out for the Regional Finals of the 2015 Sanlam Cancer Challenge which took place at Omeya Golf Club. Congratulations and well done to Werner Borg who came out tops in the Mens’ “C” Division with 31pts - Werner you are a real survivor and seem to be playing good golf at the moment - we wish you luck in the Finals to be held on 19/20 October by the Lost City/Gary Player Courses @ Sun City, RSA. Once again a big thanks from Rossmund to Sanlam for their ongoing support for this tourna-

ment. Wednesday 26 August (Heroes Day) brought a good field of golfers to compete for the fantastic vouchers provided by our sponsor Africaonline - being a public holiday meant that all the golfers had time to play 18 holes which was great. The weather was perfect and the golf was even better. Countouts were inevitable and some good scores were produced, especially over the back nine. Our 18 hole winners all entered the clubhouse on 40pts - finally Jacques van der Merwe was the lucky winner followed by

Novanam Monthly Medal Winners: L/R : Ming; B Saunderson: E Uushona; A Abrahams; W Borg; M Tordasillas (Novanam); J V/d Merwe (Vice Cpt RGC)

Bertie Saunderson and Fritz Coetzee. In the 9 hole shootout Mario Polster shot an excellent 23pts followed by Willie van Zyl on 22pts. Unfortunately Marc Gregan had to return to Windhoek unexpectedly so could

not join us for the day but has promised to be there on 25 November. Saturday 29 August was our Monthly Medal Competition. It was really great to see Michael Tordesillas on hand not only to officiate at prize giving but

also to enjoy a round of golf - Michael it was just great to have you there and on behalf of all the Rossmund golfers I say a big thanks to you and to Novanam for your continued and unfailing support for golf

here in Swakopmund. Winners: Overall: B Saunderson 71; “A” Div - K Wentzel 75; “B” Div - A Abrahams 71; “C” Div - W Borg 71; Ladies: Ming 75; Juniors: E Uushona 75. This coming Wednes-

day (tomorrow) 2 September we will have one of our old sponsors back - Anchor Point Restaurant - Beach Hotel with some “Lekker” breakfast vouchers up for grabs. Look forward to seeing you all.

Namibian Boxers First to Arrive for Africa Games

About 22 sports codes have been announced for this year’s games, including athletics and swimming for athletes with disabilities. The 2015 All Africa Games, which take place from Friday to 19 September, will mark the 50th anniversary of the games, as well as its return to Brazzaville which hosted the first edition in 1965. The rest of Namibia’s team will travel to Brazzaville today, Thursday and on 8 September. The opening ceremony

of the 11th edition of the AAG will be Friday. Speaking to Nampa upon the team’s arrival at the Maya-Maya International Airport in Brazzaville on Friday, powerlifting para-athlete Ruben Soroseb, who has represented Namibia at the Commonwealth Games and Paralympic Games before, said he is excited and looking forward to competing at the AAG for the first time. “I am really looking forward to the games. This will be the first

time that I compete with only African athletes and I trained hard for these games. I am hoping I will have the right mind set on the day of the games and hopefully do the nation and myself proud,” said Soroseb. Soroseb has competed in the Commonwealth Games twice - in 2010 in New Delhi, India where he ended ninth and in 2014 in Glasgow, Scotland, where he was sixth. He also ended in 11th place at the 2012

A group of eight boxers, two disabled body athletes and their officials became the first group from Team Namibia to arrive in Congo, Brazzaville for the 2015 All Africa Games (AAG) on Friday. Namibia will be sending 79 athletes and 48 officials to this year’s AAG. They will participate in athletics, boxing, cycling, karate, swimming, tennis, table tennis, gymnastics, and sports for the disabled.

BRAZZAVILLE, 30 August 2015 - Team Namibia pictured while arriving at the Maya Maya International Airport in Congo, Brazzaville ahead of the 2015 All Africa Games (AAG), which take place from 4 to 19 September Paralympic Games that were held in London in the United Kingdom. Another athlete who has represented Namibia before at the AAG; Commonwealth Games and Olympics is boxer Mujandjae Kasuto, who told the agency that he has learned a lot from

his previous participations and he is hoping to use that experience to his advantage. “This time around I am hoping to reach the final. With the help of my coach, God, plus my wife and kids at home, I really expect to do better.

“I have been at these Games before and I now know how things really work, so people should expect the unexpected when I step into the ring this time around,” he stated. Kasuto reached the quarter-finals in 2011 at the AAG in Mapu-

to, Mozambique, while at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Scotland he was eliminated in the round of 16. Team Namibia returned with seven medals - one gold, one silver and five bronze - from the 2011 AAG held in Maputo. NAMPA
