Holiday becomes Robbery Nightmare Maria Davel-Wallis

When Johan du Toit was awaken by the bright light shining in his eyes, his first thought was that it was his dad waking him for their first fishing expedition – but he soon realised that he had it wrong… it was a man with a gun in his hand, telling him to be quiet… The Du Toit family of Alberton - originally from Tsumeb - has been visiting the fish waters of Henties Bay since 1964,

and the members of this family, together with many friends, have numerous special memories of their visits.

They arrived from South Africa on Sunday evening, but it was almost midnight when they eventually went to bed - in

high spirits for the first fishing expedition of their two week holiday. But not long after they fell asleep, around 00:45, the rude awakening – and the demand for “money! money! I want money… I need more money!” Mr Du Toit, his 77-year old

father, his sister, wife and children were robbed of three computers, one tablet, two mobile phones, two Canon cameras and almost N$8 000 of cash – different valuta. They were sleeping on the first floor, when some of the friends, who were

still awake, heard a noise downstairs and investigated – but found nothing – moments later, they were held at gunpoint. He says his wife – deeply shocked and paralysed with fear, just kept praying and begging the men – three of them - not to hurt Continues on page 2

When namib times arrived at the scene, spectators said that police officers saw the hole in the road and immediately alerted the municipality. The traffic build-up was brought under

control when traffic officers arrived. A spokesperson at the Municipality says that it is possibly due to aging infrastructure and happens quite often. “Generally pipes burst and must be replaced

in such cases. We rely on private contractors to fix it for us, thus it could take some time, but we do the best we can to handle such problems.”

Domestic violence up in Arandis The continuous and escalating domestic violence experienced in Namibia is disturbing, and robs innocent children of their parental care. This was the view of the Namibian Police Force (NamPol)’s Crime Investigations Coordinator for the Erongo Region, Deputy Commissioner Ottilie Kashuupulwa at the fourth swearing-in ceremony of Junior Councillors of the Arandis Town Council on Wednesday. She said children are psychologically scarred after witnessing the killings of their parents. “Imagine a three-yearold child witnessing his mother or father being killed. He or she will be traumatised for life. We have a lot of children who became orphans as aresult of domestic violence,” Kashuupulwa stated. The commissioner thus urged Namibians to work together with the police in fighting domestic violence, and

other crimes in general. “If the public join forces with the police, criminals and crimes will not have a place in our society,” she advised. Sharing the crime statistics of her region for the past three years, Kashuupulwa said there has been a significant increase. From 2012 to 2014, the number of reported passion killing cases increased from three to four. Rape increased from 40 to 60, while assault with the intent to cause

grievous bodily harm (GBH) rose from 63 in 2012 to 97 last year. Common assault also increased from 79 in 2012 to 122 in 2014, while assault by threat was 42 in 2012, and increased to 104 in 2014. The 25 Junior Councillors were sworn-in by town mayor Daniel Utapi Muhuura. Ordinary Junior Council members are allocated areas to focus on such as education, health, local economic development, gender, safety and security,

youth development, elders/pensioners’ affairs, sport, arts and culture, tourism and Small and Medium Enterprises’ (SME) development. They are also expected to organise and participate in clean-up campaigns for their town. Another task is the organising of the third Arandis Investment Conference, and the first-ever mining festival expected in the middle of this year. (NAMPA)

them, and not to take their documents. The men ransacked the room, looking for valuables – one of them ripped the pendant Mrs Thea Du Toit was wearing from her neck, and ripped the couple’s wedding rings from their fingers. They also took Mrs Du Toit’s credit card. While this was happening upstairs some of the visitors were sleeping peacefully in the flat downstairs – Mr Du Toit – a contract manager for an international company - told namib times the robbers apparently had not noticed the flat and the people sleeping within. He says the greatest loss to him is

all the work on his company laptop and his personal laptop, the back-up hard drives and several memory sticks, that the robbers found during the last few moments before they left and locked the visitors in. He says the man with the gun said “God bless you” when he left the room. Mr Du Toit has offered a cash reward for his computers with hard drives intact – a Lenovo with serial number T 5053264, and a Dell with serial number 127KDTI, or info leading to the recovery of his computers. He says he heard rumours about attacks on visitors on the first night of arrival in Henties Bay, but that was a few years

back. He warns that nobody should actually ever put keys or valuables on bedside tables at night. When namib times visited yesterday, some of the members of the group were still noticeably traumatised. Deputy Commissioner Otilie Kashuupulwa has confirmed that the Henties Bay police are investigating a case of housebreaking with the intent to rob, and robbery. She confirmed that the three men got away with stolen goods to the value of around N$65 000. No arrests have been made yet, but the police have been questioning someone, and investigations continue.

Langer Heinrich employees not content Marshallino Beukes

Enraged employees of Langer Heinrich Uranium Mine took to the streets of Swakopmund on Tuesday morning, expressing their dissatisfaction with alleged irregularities at the mine. The workers intended to hand over a petition, indicating their grievances, to the mine's management, but when they pitched at the Langer Heinrich offices, the office's doors were locked and the building seemed evacuated. The demands of the workers include the immediate removal of the mine's Human Resources Manager, Mr Hein Daiber. The mine's managing director, Mr Simon Solomons and Mr Daiber are accused of “total disregard for the Union (Mine Workers Union of Namibia) and the bargaining unit employees, by implementing a new salary structure without agreement of the Union.” The petition furthermore demands the re-instatement of former Surecast

employees as Process Assistants. The workers also claim that they are pushed to meet quarterly or yearly targets, but are not compensated by means of bonuses. “Even companies contracting at our mine give bonuses with production increases,” the media statement reads. The alleged lack of safety, victimisation and discrimination at the mine also disgruntle the employees. An sms which was sent by Mr Daiber to Mr Milton Orub (Vicechairperson of the Branch Executive Committee), on Monday night, reads that it was short notice for Mr Solomons, who supposedly had a “bad day”. The employees managed to hand over the petition to Mr Daiber on Wednesday, at the

mine site. He commented that the management will get back to the workers, after they have studied the peti-tion. A time-frame of seven days for the mine's management to give feedback was set by the workers and their union, the Mine Workers Union of Namibia. Langer Heinrich issued a media statement late Tuesday afternoon, including all media, except the namib times. In the statement, the mine indicates that due to the short notice and prior commitments, the company responded to the Branch Executive Committee by proposing a meeting at Langer Heinrich Mine at 15:00 the same day, in order to discuss any matters the BEC may wish to present to the Company.

Customs officials with confiscated goods

Customs at work! Leandrea Louw

Yesterday we saw Customs officials carrying out bags of clothes and shoes at one of the stores in Walvis Bay in the Woerman and Brock Complex. Upon enquiry, namib times found out that this was part of training for the Customs Officials. Ms Susan Beukes, Head of Training and Public Relations Officer of the Customs and Excise Department under the Ministry of Home Affairs and Immigration (MHAI) said, “we have lawyers, representatives, Trademark representatives, who work for a company 'Spoor & Fisher' and these guys came to give the customs officials training on how to identify counterfeit goods, specifically identifying the special elements such as the stitching and marks of the different brands. “For instance, if you take the brand, Puma, it has a small ®, indicating it's 'original'. Counterfeit Puma goods do not have this symbol. The customs officials were given training to check for these special markers to identify counterfeit goods, or authentic goods. We are now in the process of the practical part of our training. The normal procedure of training is as follows: we receive training on how to identify the different products, we then approach different shops to identify if their products are indeed counterfeit or not. Then we detain the products if deemed in fact counterfeit. Thereafter we receive feedback in the form of an affidavit of the representatives, that states the authenticity of the products. Then, based on the affidavit, we inform the owner of the goods that the goods are counterfeit and these goods are destroyed. However, if the authenticity can be proven, the goods are returned back to the owner. If it gets seized, you forfeit the ownership of the goods automatically to the state. These goods will then be destroyed at the cost of the owners of the brands.” On Tuesday, in Windhoek, over 10 tons of counterfeit goods were destroyed, which added up to N$20 million dollars. “This is seriously a major loss of income for employers. As a word of advice to the public: we think that we are saving by spending less, when we are actually spending more. Why not once buy the authentic product, rather than settling for the counterfeit product, which in any case doesn't last long. Spend more and have quality!” Ms Beukes concluded. At the time of going to press yesterday, the street value of confiscated counterfeit products in Walvis Bay was estimated around N$ 4 million.

Drugs- A never-ending battle Leandrea Louw

On Tuesday, drug enforcement officer Detective Warrant Officer Lawrence Sinvula, accompanied by Narriville Police Station commander Ulrich Beukes, had a drug awareness information session at De Duine Secondary School, targeting boys in Grade 8 to Grade 12. Mr Van Wyk, principal of De Duine, told the learners that there was a serious drug problem in Narraville, that’s why the police were intervening in that way. “The drugs lords see you as the easy target, you who are so gullible. Once you’re in, there’s no way out,” were his words to the learners. Detective Warrant Officer Sinvula shared important information with learners, telling them of categories of drugs, different kinds of drugs, the different concealment methods, and the harmful effects of the different drugs. “It’s not easy to detect when these drugs are being smuggled

into our country and our town, so we need everyone to help us fight this.” He also highlighted the different warning signs of drug users, and slightly touched on the subject of alcohol abuse. He reminded learners that children under the age of 18 are not allowed to consume alcohol. The Station Commander, Warrant Officer Beukes warned the learners to stay away from drugs and alcohol. “When we catch you, we will treat you like a criminal. Don’t be naïve or ignorant.” Mr Van Wyk also told learners that they have a choice. “Don’t

become slaves, make the choice today. Choose today, either freedom or slavery.” Mr Paul Fisher also told namib times that he was recently called by a parent because her child, a 14 year old boy, and a Grade 7 learner at Narraville Primary School, had admitted being addicted to cannabis. In another incident, another parent had told Mr Fisher that her son had not yet come home, and that was in the early morning hours of Saturday. On investigating the matter, it was found out that there was a connection between the two incidents or to be specific, the two boys. Continues on page 5

Man in court for threatening to stab ex-girlfriend Mavourlene Gaes

Reinholdt Neumbo (33) appeared in the Walvis Bay Magistrate's court this week after he threatened his ex-girlfriend with a knife in November last year. Neumbo was arrested after his then girlfriend laid a charge of assault against him on 3 November when he threatened her that he was going to end her life by stabbing her with a knife. The accused who pleaded not guilty and begged the Magistrate to grant him bail, has five domestic violence cases pending

against him. One of Neumbo’s pending cases was when he smashed a bottle on his ex-girlfriends face. Maintaining that he is innocent, the accused said he never threatened the complainant. He alleged that she made it up after he had told her in December that he was going to get married to

another woman and ended their relationship. “I broke up with her after I learnt she was cheating on me when I went to work,” he alleged. A witness gave testimony before the court that the complainant had been aware the accused was going to get married to another woman. The witness alleged that

she the complainant, upon finding out about the other woman, said she was going to send Neumbo to jail and make sure he lost his job. The accused appeared in front of Magistrate John Liwoyo Sindao who postponed the matter to 27 February for the continuation of his bail application.

Grafskending bring pyn Liesl Losper

Nagenoeg 20 grafte is beskadig. Pastoor André Strydom was die naweek by hul lieflingdogter, Lizelle se graf.

“These children openly talked to me and admitted that they are users of the drug, cannabis. Some of the parents had given permission to have their children tested for cannabis. Four children, between the ages of 13 and 14 years old, were tested positive for cannabis. ” Some of the students of the High School were also brought in, and tested positive for dagga, after which they openly admitted that

they used dagga. The police were also present and the learners showed them to a house, allegedly their 'suppliers' house. This led to the arrest of Dawid Brandt. He appeared at the Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday and was found guilty and sentenced to pay a fine of N$2 000 or face12 months imprisonment on a charge of possession of dependence producing substance. He paid the fine. In a separate incident,

He was not granted bail. Detective John-Heinrich Geiseb also said that the Station Commander is fed up. “Those dealing in drugs, this year they will see what we are capable of”. “As members of our community, the launch

of programs should be the forerunner of intensive police operations. There are more drugs dealers busy in our community, trying to rid our youth of their future. Parents should totally ban the ‘hookah pipes’ out of their homes. We should actually appeal to the government to make a law against the prohibition of this 'hookah pipes' if youth are found in possession of this device.

It was also admitted to me by learners that they mix certain chemicals with dagga and smoke it as it apparently gives a better 'high'. Many parents have agreed that serious action should be taken against these 'houses' that sell drugs and expose the youth to drugs. W h a t ' s ev e n m o r e worrisome is that we are aware of these things, yet we don't want to come forward as soldiers for the future of the youth. There were previous occasions where something like this had

happened, but we soon overcame it and this was the action of a parent. The Misconduct Policy of the Ministry of Eductaion clearly stipulates that if a child is found using intoxicating substances on or of school premises, he or she will be suspended and this suspension can last up to 6 weeks. The law is much stricter than corporal punishment which had been taken away years before,” he said. If anyone has any information contact Detective Geiseb at 081 262 9842.

Obtaining Fishing

Permits

Obtain a permit from the Namibian Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources (MFMR) to catch fish or dive for crayfish and respect harvesting limitations. WHY? The marine resources are limited and currently some of them are overfished or over collected. It is necessary that everybody uses them wisely and carefully to secure the future harvesting needs by protecting the stock. Quantity/number of marine resources harvestable, minimum size limits of fish and crayfish that can be caught, open season etc. help to manage stocks to avoid the total disappearance of some species in our waters. Do not leave bait or fish on the beach! Either take it home or return it to the sea. This food attracts scavengers like jackals and gulls that prey on other bio-diversity. When you are back home after the holiday, it also inflates the predator population. Where can you get a license for angling, crayfish diving & bait/mussels collection?

D-Day looms for horse mackerel export requirements to Mozambique Maria Davel-Wallis The Midwater Trawlers Association (MTA), has confirmed that it faces several challenges that must be overcome before 1 March, to comply with the import requirements set by Mozambique, and set out in a protocol signed between the NSI, and Mozambique’s INIP in this regard. The NSI is the competent authority to implement the import requirements of its counterparts in other countries. Sharon Neumbo of the MTA says the MTA and NSI had a meeting recently to share information and determine the industries’ readiness, “especially regarding vessel infrastructure modification and standardisation of each and every vessel, according to what they already have or do not have on board.” One of the new requirements is that the NSI, as competent authority, has to collect samples of export products for testing, and thereafter issue a health certificate to accompany the fish exported. She says this could cause delays, but

the NSI has indicated its commitment to try and streamline the process as much as possible to support the trading process. “Additionally, there are modifications that need to be done on many of the vessels to ensure compliance to the set import requirements for Mozambique. Vessels have strict maintenance schedules that do not allow for much flexibility. This means that some vessels will not be able to export until they have been to dry dock and modified as per their pre-planned schedules. Ms Neumbo says the

initial date for implementation of the requirements was set for September 2014 by the Mozambique authorities. The subsector then requested the NSI to seek an extension

to 1 March this year, to allow them to comply with the import restrictions, and this was granted. “After 1 March no exporter will be allowed to export horse mack-

New secondary school in Kuisebmond

Construction of the new secondary school in Walvis Bay's Kuisebmond is already far advanced and should be completed at the end of April and ready to receive its first learners at the start of the next semester in May. The new school in Johanna Benson Street in the Tutaleni area, being built at an estimated cost of N$22 million, consists of 24 classrooms in the main double storey building, and an administration wing which will consist of a library, the principal's office and a staff room. Construction started in January last year.

Millions raised for NAMAs Over N$ 8.7 million has been raised for the 2015 edition of the Namibia Annual Music Awards (NAMAs). The event is slated for Swakopmund on 1 and 2 May. Addressing sponsors in the capital on Thursday, the executive chairperson of the NAMAs' organising committee Tim Ekandjo said Mobile Telecommunications Limited (MTC), which is the main sponsor, has put forth N$5.3 million towards the organisation, planning and hosting of the event. An amount of N$3.4 million was bequeathed by 17 corporate companies, of which N$2.5 million has been set aside as winning artists' cash prizes. Sponsorships for various services and products worth N$800 000 were also received. Ekandjo announced that this year, prize monies for the Best Female and Male Artists have increased from N$50 000 each to N$100 000 each, while the cash rewards of all other categories increased from N$20 000 to N$30 000 each. The winners of each category will also receive a new Huawei P6 Smartphone. Meanwhile, he expressed disappointment with some shops in the country which do not sell Namibian music, calling on them to do so in order to expose Namibian talent and music to the world. “We want to see our Namibian music at the Johannesburg airport too,” he stated. (NAMPA)

The completion of the new secondary school in Kuisebmond, with its unusual design, is eagerly awaited

Spiking not real at the coast? NHE Personnel accused of Think again Alleged Bribery Cyril Beukes The foreigners think we are puppets.

It has been said (after articles were posted about girls being spiked) that women simply drink too much and then say they have been spiked just to excuse their behaviour. I was at a pub in Walvis Bay recently and while waiting for the bar attendant to serve a drink, a man across the bar waved at me and held up a drink. I thought nothing of it. Looking in that direction again, I realised that the drink he held up was actually meant for me, when he asked

the bar attendant to pass it on to me. The drink was placed in front of me, already opened. I told my friend I would not drink it as I was not that naive. At that moment, another man who stood next to the man who gave the drink, came to me and took the drink

away from me immediately. It is no rocket science to guess why he did that. To that man I want to say thank you. It is easy to say that women drink too much when actually they have been a target of spiking. This is a harbour town and if there are drug

dealers here, one cannot deny that there are culprits spiking women’s drinks. It is repulsive - and men who spike women’s drinks, have no backbone. All women ánd men should be aware of this as it is happening and it is extremely dangerous. Just saying

My story today is about shoes My story today is about shoes. No not in your closet at home, the shoes on the beach. Did anyone of you notice the one and only shoe on the beach? Every ten steps there is a shoe lying on the beach. Sometimes new and sometimes an old ‘bokkom.’ Dried out by the salt and sun. Makes one wonder if both shoes were lost

or only one. Did the waves overwhelm them while spending time at the beach or did they forget their shoes when they went home? There are even shoes from the ships. From children’s shoes up to gumboots and even men’s church shoes.

All shapes and sizes long forgotten by their owners. What if there is a big board put up were anyone can put up a lost shoe with a date or a comment. How many shoes will there be in the end. It is very inte-

resting, and makes one wonder about the story around one lost shoe. If anyone of you walk along the beach again, try counting how many lost shoes you can see. Greetings juanita

Letter from the North -5

Drive Against Malaria in Namibia David Robertson has been spearheading the Drive Aginst Malaria for decades, and since 1999, Julia Samuël has been helping him – as promised, Julia has written us from the north of Namibia, to share the latest on their local campaign. Instant recognition

David Robertson and Dr Julia Samuël determined to bring medicine to the Himba

A long day of testing with Albertina Shanghala

Wherever we go, people wave spontaniously, want to talk with us, and even stop us. A policeman hails us down at a road junction. ‘ ’Welcome, I saw you on television! Where are you heading to? Please meet my family!’’ We thank him for the invitation. Unfortunately we have to move on to reach our next destination, before the sun sets. Media is an important tool to keep the attention on Malaria. After our interview for NBC1, we experience the major positive impact. At a shop, we had to stop for some food and cold drink supply. Whilst leaving the shop, our Land Rover was surrounded by young people. ‘’We have seen you. What an amazing story! Can we make a picture together?’’ We always make time for enthusiastic people. Successful day of testing Just before dark we pitch our tent, close to the Kunene river’s edge. It’s been a successful but long day of testing, giving out nets and distributing medicines to

health workers who run out of stock. The sunset is beautiful and leaves us wishing we could stay forever. Just what we need after a hard day’s travel. Out of nowhere two people showed up. ‘‘I have seen you. You fight against Malaria. Mr David, you had Malaria in Kenya? Can we read more about you? Do you have a book about you we can read? We like to know more about your amazing story!’’ Reactions keep flowing in where ever we go. We even got discount at a Shell gazoline station!

Lovely people All these lovely people give us a lot of new energy to move on, and to continue our battle against a dangerous disease to protect the Nambian people in the North. Drive Against Malaria has worked extensively in the battle against Malaria since launching in 1988. Since this initial work, the focus of the foundation has gradually shifted from global Malaria attention from 1988 to 1999, and today, 15 years’ focus on Malaria control.

Determination In early 2006 Drive Against Malaria was confronted with the devastating Malaria situation among children along the border between Namibia and Angola. We are concerned to find remote communities where Malaria is still a killer. Determined to bring comprehensive Malaria interventions to the Himba and the “far out” communities. Drive Against Malaria supports health posts with a new supply of effective medicines and Rapid Diagnostic Tests, and all that is needed with the focus on malaria control and elimination. David Robertson explains that some people may be thinking that Malaria is under control and hence cutting down on help and funding but he warns, “There is a severe risk in doing so.” “There is need to continue with all the existing efforts, otherwise the incidences of Malaria can rise rapidly again,” he says. “The eradication of Malaria is possible but there is need to keep the pressure on and continue with follow-ups.”

The Junior City Council of the Municipality of Walvis Bay facilitated a blood donation drive on Tuesday at the blood transfusion clinic. The Junior City Council welcomed all the head prefects from separate schools’ ‘understudy representative councils’, to participate in the mass blood drive. Conversation maps and diabetes education Great wellbeing news for diabetics is that Lore Wormsbächer and Mariska van Wyk, both enrolled dieticians, are beginning with diabetes training that includes conversation maps. Conversation maps are small group learning tools - they are approximately 1m by 1,5m, visual representations of diabetes care knowledge, positioned on a table top. Three to ten people can be accommodated around the conversation map, with a diabetes educator guiding the learners through the discovery learning process of the conversation map. The conversation map demonstrates how healthcare providers and the patients can work together to promote better outcomes in people with diabetes. Participants have the opportunity to take part in lively and constructive discussions with other individuals in the session. The tool also provides a unique verbal and visual learning experience. Topics that can be discussed during group sessions: Managing my diabetes Diabetes and Healthy Lifestyle Starting Insulin Experiencing life with diabetes Conversation Maps are tools which have been developed by Healthy In-

teractions in partnership with Diabetes UK and sponsored by Lilly. Healthcare professionals need to be trained on how to facilitate the Conversation Maps process. The Registration starts at 17:30. On 23/25 February/23 March/25 March they will be at Welwitschia Med-Park. (Dieticians office next to “Healing in Motion” Physiotherapy (next to

Animal Clinic) on 26 February; 26 March at Swakopmund Medical Center, Opposite Mediclinic Hospital.) Mayor of Walvis Bay, Eusebio Omar van Reenen, stated. He told the participating donors to donate blood was an amazing humanitarian ability. “One unit of blood can save three lives. Therefore we’ll not only be donating blood, but we will be donating a life.” The Junior Mayor urged

the community at large to take part in this mass campaign and fill up the blood banks. “The kind services offered by the Blood Transfusion Staff was heart-warming and aspiring. The enthusiastic staff made sure we were well relaxed and comfortable. The Junior City Council would like to extend great

acknowledgements to the Blood Transfusion Services of Namibia Walvis Bay staff and the participating Head Prefects from all Walvis Bay high schools. Their input and selfless assistance have allowed the Junior City Council in their continuation of making Walvis Bay an ‘oasis of opportunities’.

Sledge - proudly 70s Mavourlene Gaes

Walvis Bay “Children from Pluto” and “Dead Woods” band member and legend from the 70s, Sledge Kanime is coming back to the harbour town by popular demand. Sledge Kanime grew up in the harbour town and says his love for music started developing at the tender age of 15. “I used to listen to my father’s hard disc (known today as CDs). My father was a banjo and guitar player” he explains.

Adding that his father, who was also a soul music genius much like Percy Sledge, Brook Benton and Wilson Picket not only contributed to him making up his mind to pursue music but, they were his biggest inspiration and played a vital role in his decision.

Sledge is at his happiest when surrounded by music

Sledge embracing his deep passion for music

After completing his high school career at Augustineum, Sledge joined a Rock, Pop and Soul band “Children from Pluto,” where he was a drummer in 1976. He left the band the following year for personal reasons to join a band called “Dead Woods.” Shortly after joining “Dead Woods” in 1977, Sledge became part of a South African band called “The Prumes.” “I teamed up with them (The Prumes) after they came to perform in Narraville and followed them back to Cape Town,” he recalls. Sledge explains his music is more American soul with a bit of jazz and some of the songs he performs are from artists like “Temptations”, “O-jays”, “Grand Funk”

amongst others. The legend remains loyal to the 70s and says the only reason he does not belong to any record label or has recorded an album of his own is because he wants to keep the good old 70s laid back soulful music alive. The outspoken artist is set to return next weekend where he plans to bring young and old together with vibes from the 70s and additionally also pay tribute to the forgotten legends of Walvis Bay. “The music has been bombarded with today’s local and young people music, which I do not have a problem with, but we also need to go back to the oldies but goodies,” he concluded.

Ford Committed to The Environment And A Sustainable Future In Africa Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa (FMCSA) is making a valuable contribution to the environment and sustainability in South Africa through its Ford Wildlife Foundation (FWF). FMCSA has a proud legacy of supporting and partnering with organisations that address environmental education, research and conservation projects around South Africa. The company has assisted more than 150 projects and invested over R30million over the past 25 years in this field. "Environmental education and conservation is critical for the future of South Africa, and to ensure ecological sustainability which is increasingly under pressure," says Jeff Nemeth, CEO and President of Ford Motor Company of South Africa and SubSaharan Africa.

Ford is also announcing the expansion of the Ford Wildlife Foundation into Africa. “As responsible corporate citizens, Ford, its employees and dealers have an obligation to play their part in securing our natural resources for future generations. The Ford Wildlife Foundation allows us to do so in an effective and meaningful way." The Foundation is supported financially by FMCSA, and the non-government and non-profit partner organisations nominated by Ford and the FWF board are supplied with vehicles to conduct their education, research and conservation initia-

tives. The locally-built Ford Ranger, which is one of SA's top-selling vehicles overall and in the light commercial segment, is one of the key models used to enable the projects to go further and make a real impact - particularly in the remote locations often associated with these projects. In partnership with the Ford dealers, the Ford Wildlife Foundation vehicles are regularly serviced and maintained to the highest standards to ensure they operate at peak efficiency. There are numerous conservation projects located around the country, including the likes of the Black Rhino Project in Kwa-

Zulu-Natal that is focused on protecting and growing this increasingly threatened species. The Enkangala Grasslands Project promotes the concept of biosphere reserves and the establishment and maintenance of a biosphere reserve for the high altitude moist

grasslands of Mpumalanga, KwaZulu Natal and Free State Provinces of South Africa. Environmental education projects that bring information about the country's biodiversity to the population are a crucial component of the Foundation's objectives, as are research

projects that investigate the impact of human activities on the environment, such as the Zululand Nile Crocodile research project run by the University of KwaZulu-Natal. FMCSA's extensive support for wildlife and environmental projects has earned it recognition from far and wide,

and the likes of the Endangered Wildlife Trust, Wildlife & Environment Society of SA, Birdlife SA, Association of Marketers, WWF, and the American Chamber of Commerce have in the past all recognised the programme for its contributions

FLI-AFRICA spreads the love on Valentine's Day

I love the idea of Valentine's Day. Expressing how you feel about others is a lovely concept, but somewhere along the way, the occasion has become fraught – and not in a good way. Single friends find it lonely and friends in relationships find it weighted with obligation. Where's the love? This Valentine's Day Walvis Bay based travel agency FLI-AFRICA deci-

ded to give back, reclaim Valentine's Day and imbue it with true love – the kind where you give without expectation. Hendrik Kabooy was a contestant in the Rössing Marathon contested

between Swakopmund and Mile 4 on Saturday, 14. He received a hamper from FLI-AFRICA filled with all the supplies he would need to endure and do his best on the run. "We thought we were

giving back, but in fact we ended up learning so much from Hendrik and what it takes to be a seasoned athlete, it was a great gift for us to experience this and see him even more excited for the marathon," were the words by FLI-AFRICA at the handing over. FLI-AFRICA is pleased that Hendrik could finish the Rössing Marathon with a time of 03:59 and qualifying him for the 2015 Comrades Marathon to be contested between Durban and Pietermaritzburg in South Africa. So we urge all Namibians to try something next Valentine's Day, whether big or small for someone else, someone you don't know might appreciate the thought and gesture. Give your money, your time, your talent, your love or anything special that is unique to you. What better way to spend Valentine's Day?

PISCS Medal 1

Seems we do not have many Valentines left in our club, as we attracted 45 players for the first medal of the year last Saturday.

Well done! JJ Fourie requested that we have our medals in the middle of the month in order for him to play each and every one of them as sponsor. JJ, you ask and we deliver. Thank you for attending and playing. The weather played along very nicely and for a change an almost windless day gave off some very well scores, or rather from some of the players. Gordon Damster played very well with a 71 gross on the day from a 6 handicap. Sergio Figueiredo was also firing on the left hand side with a 77 gross, playing from a 12 handicap. Joa Gomes and Flip de Villiers needed help as both of them could only achieve 98 nett. Joa ran away and Flip took the pot with pride. Best Nett- Sergio Figueredo Best Nett – Gordon Damster A-Division Best Nett – Kevin Wentzel B- Division Best Nett – Danie van Antwerpen C- Division Best Nett – Chris van Rensburg Ladies – Justine Grobler This Saturday we have a club competition. Many players will be in Windhoek for the Pairs. Best of luck to all of you. Next Saturday, 28 February Oom Beyers Truter from Beyerskloof will visit us for an individual stableford. Look out for wine specials.

JJ Fourie (left) with all the winners

Rossmund Golf Club Weekly News Wednesday the sun was hot out there but quite a good number of players including a visitor from Kuils River - Tilla - who thoroughly enjoyed her walk amongst the springbok. Maintenance work is still in progress on 11 and 12 so temporary greens still in play - you will just get used to the distance then Gert will throw us back onto the newly planted greens. Saturday Marco opted for one of his favourite competitions - Betterball Bogey-Plus. Apparently there was lots of fun and some confusion about the scoring but all arrived back in the clubhouse in one piece. There were two 2-clubs on Number 12 from Michael Ludeke and Aldun Strauss. Winners: Warren Theron/Aldun Strauss +10; Hans Olvisen/ Pete Fox +8; Li Cheng/He Meng +6. Well played to each and everyone. Sunday saw the SAGES strutting their stuff although not a very big field due to this and that you know how it is with "ou mense" - a great morning of golf was had by all. A big vote of thanks to Margot and Pete Bassingsthwaighte from Cornerstone Guesthouse for the generous sponsorship. There was 1 x 2 club on the day from Tony Boesch on Number 12. Nearest to the pin prizes went to Koot Potgieter on No 7 and Wayne

Hart No 12 - Wayne also took the honours with 35pts followed by Eddy van Wyk 34pts - great to see you back on the fairways; there was a countout for third place 33pts coming from Werner Borg and Koot Potgieter - so almost a clean sweep for the boys from across the river!!! Don't forget to put your names up for the "Matchplay". The kitchen is up and running with extended hours on Wednesdays and Saturdays so support them where you can - I can promise you the sandwiches are fresh and the "slap" chips are great. One more week to pay up your Handicap Fees plus any other fees that may be outstanding.Quite a few of our regular players are travelling to Windhoek this weekend to take part in the Annual Federation Pairs Competition at the Windhoek Country Club so Rossmund will play a club sponsored Individual Stableford. "And God promised men that good and obedient wives would be found in all corners of the world. Then he made the earth round and laughed and laughed and laughed".

SQUASH NOTES

Coastal Summer League Well so far everyone seems pretty happy with the scoring of the Summer League, which can go by no other title, cause by gum it's hot, humid and sweaty on those courts. Those 20 minutes is a killer. After a tough game you walk off that court drenched. Showers not a necessity No, make that a huge necessity and this week is definitely going to be no better. Enjoy! th The scores for the 11 were as follows:Group A Sergio Figueiredo vs Dylan Spencer 2-0. Imanuel Amorongo vs Ze de Britto 2-0 w/o. Trevor Grane vs Stefan van Tonder 2-0. A close game. Stefan played his heart out. Jaco de Witt vs Leslie Bosman 2-0. Clifford de Witt vs Jan de Smit 2-0. Group B Wynand Breytenbach vs Jacques de Villiers 2-0. They paced themselves well . Jenny Pahl vs Matthys Robberts 20. Matthys was giving Jen a run for her money, but unfortunately pulled up with an injury in the final minute. Sharde Fisher vs Jorn Wormsbacher 2-0. Pieter Beukes vs Heinz Ahrens 2-0 w/o. Trevor Heath vs Brandon Grane 20.

Group C. Divan Grobbelaar vs Bertus Fokkens 2-0. Doyle de Haas vs Sven Deetliefs 2-0 w/o. Zaan de Witt vs Chris Bruyns 2-0. Christo van Wyk vs Raymond Duvenhage 2-0 w/o. Chantel de Gouveia vs Flip Scheepers 2-0 w/o. Blackie Zwart vs Jaco de Villiers 2-0. Group D. Martin Degele vs Jakkie Nel 20. Sam Webster vs James Abbott 2-0 Zola Nel vs Lindsay Lottering 2-0 w/o. Gerard Hough vs Patrick Quinn 2-0 w/o. Ettiene Beukes vs Ester Meyer 2-0. That sums it up for last week. Just a gentle reminder to all doubles players, the Supatronix doubles open will be coming up on the 6/7March, so make sure you get your entries in timeously. Catch you next week.

Rugbyseisoen in volle gang Leandrea Louw
