TransNamib has expressed unhappiness with the Namibia Transport and Allied Workers’ Union (Natau) for saying it had not been informed of the company’s retrenchment process from the initial stage. In a statement issued to Nampa, TransNamib’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer Ailly Hangula-Paulino said the TransNamib management and Natau shop stewards had convened a consultative meeting on 18 December, when the company’s rightsizing process as part of the parastatal’s turnaround plan was explained to all parties. “We were shocked to learn through the media that Natau called for the intervention of President Hifikepu-

nye Pohamba by stopping the rightsizing process of TransNamib, which was a consultative process between TransNamib and Natau right from the onset,” she said. Hangula-Paulino explained that the parastatal had rolled out extensive stakeholder engagement initiatives informing all relevant partners about the detail and dynamics of the rightsizing exercise. She said that early December 2014, TransNamib received an unsolicited

proposal from Zealot, Natau’s business arm, on possible strategies to mitigate the rightsizing strategy of TransNamib. Hangula-Paulino explained that the TransNamib management regarded this innovation by Natau in a positive light and in good faith resolving to support the initiative as proposed by Zealot. She said TransNamib had issued the notification of retrenchment to the Labour Commissioner on 16 December 2014 and other

Traffic report: Festive season 2014-15 The MVA fund released recorded information collected over the festive season regarding traffic on the roads on Monday. The festive season commenced on the 22 November 2014 until the 15 January 2015. With this the Festive Season Road Safety Campaign kicked off on the theme “Your destination, a reward for safe driving. Pledge to arrive alive,” launched by the Namibian Police Force (Nampol), Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) Fund and National Road Safety Council (NRSC). The Traffic Law Enforcement Division, Air Wing Directorate, National Road Safety Council, MVA Fund, Roads Authority and Private Road Safety Forum worked close together. A number of 8 members per region were rotated amongst concerned regions to work in shifts of eight hours to cover for a twenty four hour attendance at the roadblocks. Head of Traffic Law Enforcement Division visited roadblocks on the roads to the North and West to monitor traffic flow on critical dates and observe any

irregularities. A debriefing report regarding the festive season’s traffic states the following: “The roads leading to the North and West of the country was extremely busy and special attention was given to the following regions: Khomas, Karas, Erongo, Otjozondjupa, Oshikoto, Oshana, Kavango-East and Kavango-West Regions. The campaign recorded a reduction in fatalities while injuries and the number of crashes increased in comparison to the previous year.

A significant reduction of 16% in fatalities was recorded by the MVA Fund Call Centre, with regrettably 97 people losing lives in road crashes during the campaign period in comparison to the previous year which recorded 115 fatalities. The male-to-female ratio for fatalities as a result of road crashes is that 68 men (representing 70% of total fatalities) lost their lives in road crashes during the festive season while 29 women (30%) perished. Constituting 41% of total fatalities, an increasingly high num-

ber of people between the ages of 16 and 35 died, while 15% of children in the 1 to 15 age group fell victim to road crashes. Most fatalities were recorded in Erongo (18%), Oshikoto (12%), Kavango (11%), Omusati (10%) and Oshana (10%). The number of injured persons increased by 19%, i.e. 1261 vs 1056 in the previous year. Usually 30% are seriously injured, thereby resulting in high hospital and medical costs, as the Fund incurs on average N$14 million per month on hospital expenses.

Most of the 614 crashes which occurred during the festive season, were caused by roll-overs (226; 37%), collisions (169; 32%) and pedestrians (134; 22%) and are mostly attributed to poor driving skills, irresponsible overtaking and night driving. Thirty three (33) percent of these crashes occurred in the Khomas region, 13% in Oshana, 13% in Erongo, 10% in Otjozondjupa and 7% in Oshikoto. Improved collaboration between the campaign partners, namely MVA Fund, NRSC,

Nampol, RA, Namibian Defense Force, ministries of Works and Transport and Health and Social Services as well as various municipalities, ensured consistent law enforcement visibility, enhanced public awareness interventions, increased visibility of emergency response units which reduced response time to the scene of the crash, increased highway patrols, and the introduction of rest points between roadblocks which aimed to reduce the risk of driver fatigue.”

NAMAs - “looking good for Swakop’’ Sharlien Tjambari The first and second of May this year will be that time of the year again when artists/musicians will hit the road to the final destination of the NAMAS 2015, which still need to be announced. During last week's media release, Mr John Ekongo of MTC on behalf of the NAMA organising committee, said Namibia’s largest musical awards was proud to announce that a 100% increase in the lucrative prize for the best male and female artist of the year was confirmed for the coveted prize of best male and female artist of the year who are set to walk away with N$100 000 each, whilst a 50% increase remains for the organisers to do the list for the other category prizes. According to the Executive Chairman of the NAMAs, the NAMAs has recorded a whopping total of 835 entries compared to last year's

564 entries. A source close to namib times said that there is a possibility that the NAMAs 2015 will be hosted in Swakopmund at the Swakopmund Indoor Sports Centre. When we spoke to the Mayor of Swakopmund, Juuso Kambweshe, he said he could not confirm if Swakopmund will be hosting the NAMAs or not. The only thing he could confirm was that he indeed had a meeting with the organising committee of the NAMAs 2015 and had a discussion with them. “But I can say that things look good for Swakopmund” added Mr Kambweshe.

Namibia in dire need of blood Madelaine Laubscher A campaign is underway countrywide for Namibians to donate blood at various donating stations, calling on all donors to pay a visit to all donating stations since Namibia entered the new year with a blood shortage.

A local resident donating blood at a donating station

The Donor Relations Supervisor at NamBTS, Ms Zita Tobin, spoke to the namib times and said “currently there is only a three day blood supply available countrywide. Unfortunately, this happens every year even though every effort was made to prevent this from happening at the end of 2014. The 'Donate before You Go' campaign was launched as a joint effort between NamBTS, the World Health Organisation (WHO), the United Nations (UN) and the Ministry of Health and Social Services to encourage Namibians to donate 5 200 units before Christmas to ensure a sustainable blood supply for the Festive and New Year Seasons. By Christmas, the target was 1100 units short of the 5 200 mark, which most likely led to the current shortage,” she said. According to her the

blood shortages are often not caused by an increased demand for blood, but rather due to below target blood collections. “This usually happens during extended holiday periods when donors are not readily available to give blood. Blood products are used in many cases, not just for trauma and emergency patients in need of blood after a motor vehicle accident. Mothers facing complications during pregnancy and birth, premature infants, burn victims, cancer patients, those awaiting an organ transplant, surgery patients and others with blood conditions all require blood products throughout the year, including holiday periods.” Those interested in alleviating the blood shortage through donation should be older than 16 years,

weigh more than 50kg, lead a sexually safe lifestyle and enjoy general good health. “Please consider donating blood in Windhoek, Swakopmund or Walvis Bay at one of NamBTS's conveniently located permanent donation centres. NamBTS will pay a visit to schools as well. We need all types of blood especially O+. We cannot manage without our dedicated donors. Our contact number that willing donors can dial is 061 386300 or 064 400870 in order to find out where our stations will be set up. We are also open every Tuesday in Walvis Bay from 13:00 to 18:00 at the NamBTS offices and every Monday in Swakopmund during the same time period. Donors are requested to eat a meal before donating.”

Woman sentenced on drug charges Mavourlene Gaes

After being arrested last year on a charge of dealing in cocaine and the requisite alternative count of dealing in a dangerous dependence producing substance, Elizabeth Bongiwe Hajisi returned to the Walvis Bay Magistrate’s court last week, where she was sentenced to 24 months in prison on the first count and another 12 months for dealing in these substances. The sentences will run consecutively.

Court

In July last year, the police received a tip-off on Hajisi’s illegal dealings in Kuisebmond's Seapoint area. When they went there to investigate, they found 27 pieces of cocaine, six full mandrax tablets and three halves (methaqualone) valued at N$4 000 in her bedroom which led to her arrest. The state built a case against her and made their case concrete when the very same person she paid to distribute the drugs, turned state witness and testified against her leading to her sentencing. Hajisi appeared in front on Magistrate Vicky Nicolaidis who explained that because the serious

nature of the offence cannot be overemphasised, as its effects are far-reaching with often horrific consequences. “The court is often told that housebreakings and theft are perpetrated by accused persons for the sole purpose of fueling a drug habit. It cannot be denied that families are most severely affected and the only people who benefit are those who deal in drugs,” Nicolaidis added. Having taken into account the personal circumstances of Hajisi on the one hand and the seriousness and prevalence of the offence, she was found guilty and was put behind bars for 36 months.

Me-

Swakopmund schools up and running

Obtaining Fishing

Permits

Obtain a permit from the Namibian Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources (MFMR) to catch fish or dive for crayfish and respect harvesting limitations. WHY? The marine resources are limited and currently some of them are overfished or over collected. It is necessary that everybody uses them wisely and carefully to secure the future harvesting needs by protecting the stock. Quantity/number of marine resources harvestable, minimum size limits of fish and crayfish that can be caught, open season etc. help to manage stocks to avoid the total disappearance of some species in our waters. Do not leave bait or fish on the beach! Either take it home or return it to the sea. This food attracts scavengers like jackals and gulls that prey on other bio-diversity. When you are back home after the holiday, it also inflates the predator population. Where can you get a license for angling, crayfish diving & bait/mussels collection?

Lover’s Hill Hotel - too much, too soon An artist’s impression of the new hotel development on Lover’s Hill in Walvis Bay Bernabé Blaauw The proposed development of a luxury hotel at the area known as Lover’s Hill, next to the lagoon in Walvis Bay, is not welcomed by all as some role players in the hospitality industry feel that the new development will be able to manipulate rates and take away business from the current hotels and accommodation establishments in the harbour town. Various matters of concern came to light during a public meeting held at the public library of the Municipality of Walvis Bay last week with affected parties and interested persons as part of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). During this meeting it also came to light that the application for an environmental clearance certificate was rejected by the Ministry of Environment and Tourism and referred back for further investigation. A Chinese national, Mr Bo Wang, bought Portion 1 of Farm 45 (Lover’s Hill) in November 2002 from fishing mogul, Mr José Luis Bastos for an amount of N$20 million and plans to develop a luxury hotel and ecotourism complex on the property. Mr Bastos

bought the property from the municipality in 2002 for N$403 848. The complex will consist of 322 room, eight luxury suites, four presidential suites, 18 single-storey family suites, a gymnasium, a swimming pool, spa, and a public ecotourism education and information centre. During the public information meeting, Mr Conrad Scheffer of Bob Mould and Scheffer Architect, gave more details of the ecotourism friendliness of the project such as solar energy generation, gardens, landscaping and pedestrian walkways. He also gave the assurance that the existing public amenities such as walkways around the lagoon will be maintained and that a 10 metre green buffer zone will be created

around the complex. Some of the concerns raised were as follows: The hotel provides 34 percent more available accommodation than what is currently available in Walvis Bay. Not one of the establishments in Walvis Bay currently and in history shows 100 percent occupancy for a month. Many have a few days in the year with a 100 percent occupancy rate but in general a rate of 73 percent to 83 percent per month is maintained. Although the developers claim that they will provide 400 permanent jobs in the hotel, it is felt that they will also cause a lot of people to lose their jobs and businesses as the new development is too much, too soon. It is felt that a 400 m² ecotourism training facility

is too small if the size of the property is kept in mind, and that a bigger portion should be dedicated to education. Although there is nothing wrong with competition, it should be healthy competition and not overpowering the market with an average of 270 rooms per day more than what the current hotels are offering. It is also feared that the developer may add a Casino to the property when the proposed development proofs not to be profitable enough in the future. Although the harbour development will bring more business and extra hotels will be needed in future, nobody knows when the new harbour will be in place and more research in this instance is proposed. Did those who claim that this development is

needed now do a proper investigation and discussion with those currently engaged in the Hospitality industry? Should the environmental part not be of more recent studies? There are almost yearly changes in the behaviour of nature and it is felt that studies of the late 90’s are just not good enough for the intended purpose. The height of the building is also a matter of great concern. There is uncertainty about the building regulations for the area. Some say if the roof is included, the building will no longer be six storeys but closer to seven or even eight storeys. It seems as though the last shot in the Lover’s Hill issue has not been fired yet.

Tug “Omanda” salvaged Sunday night Although the Ports Authority could not be reached for comment, this probably indicates that the investigation into the sinking of the vessel was completed as no salvage operation

could be conducted before the completion of such an investigation. The photo was taken minutes before she sank on Tuesday night last week.

Rough Seas The tidal coeficient today was 94. With such a high coefficient the coast experienced big waves and strong currents. At noon the tidal coefficient increased to 100 and increased to a tidal coefficient of 104 by the end of the day. The tide heights today were 1.5 m, 0.3 m, 1.6 m and 0.2 m.

Swakopmund residents phoned us and said they drove down to the beach to look at the rough seas… these pictures were taken at 3:00 near the Jetty.

Atlantis Sport Club says farewell to a good friend Bernabé Blaauw

Friends, family and club members came together at the Atlantis Sport Club last week to honour Gerard Jensen who passed away on 13 December last year. Gerard was a staunch supporter, a regular “knobel” player and former committee member of Atlantis. He was born in Kiel, Germany on 12 February 1966 and studied at the Fachhochschule in Flensburg. He was well-known in the information technology industry and also the owner of Namibtec in Walvis Bay.

His dry sense of humour and courage to

speak his mind will be sorely missed.

Bernard plans to launch a book

9

Mavourlene Gaes

HIV/AIDs activist Bernard Kamatoto is planning on launching a book called “Sex is great but let’s be honest,” before the middle of the year. The book tells his own personal story on issues he had to deal with after being diagnosed with the HI-Virus over ten years ago. According to Kamatoto, he would sometimes go to schools or workplaces to learners and employees. He says he would feel bad because not everyone would be there to listen to his message and added that with the book he is about to launch every-

body will receive the message. Kamatoto says he is going to appoint someone who will put his experiences in writing, because he expresses himself better when he is doing the talking. Kamatoto says he will rather stick to what he does best. “Aside from my personal experiences the book will also touch on why it is that some of us as parents choose to talk

to our children about sex but fail to do so with our partners” Kamatoto explained. He is also planning on shooting a small educational film that will last about 45 minutes, for the launch of , what one could call, his experience-filled biography. The film will focus on factors including stigma and discrimination people living with HIV/AIDs are dealing with, in their everyday lives.

Where there is a will... Mavourlene Gaes

Jeremia Mashona who sells his products in front of a local grocery shop in Kuisebmond, what can only be described as a big “toolbox” in order to provide for his girlfriend and wife.

Jeremia posing next to the items he sells to customers

Mashona, like so many in Walvis Bay came to the coastal town in search of a better job opportunity but, ended up doing something else and as it turns out, it is something he loves. We all have to work hard to provide an income for those we are responsible for. Having a girlfriend and a child to take care of, this man has resort to selling what can only be described as big “toolbox”.

Spades, bathroom pipes and bike helmets amongst many others equipment are what you will find at the open market where he sells. Mashona explains that everything he finds is different - and if he sees anything worth selling, he goes for it. “I prefer selling on the street rather than using those small stalls from the municipality because my business is growing by the minute.” Mashona urged the public to

bring him what they want to sell and he will get it off their hands. He says where there’s a will, there’s always a way……he and his little business has proven that you can do whatever is possible to create an income, if you have people to look after. He says if you are doing something at least – and for the right reasons, you should feel proud, not ashamed of your circumstances.

A man with a passion for wood carving Marshallino Beukes

Mannetjies Smith’s playful attitude when it came to wood, turned into something more, when he discovered he actually enjoyed what he was doing. As it turned out he was very good at it. Art has become a great love for Mannetjies since he started carving wood in the 80s. Although he was born at the coast, he lived almost half of his life in the northern part of the country. He said because carving wood is very popular in that part of the country, it rubbed off on him but he had no idea he would actually be gifted. “I started carving wood because it was a fun thing I loved to do when I needed to pass time, it was after a few attempts that I saw it was something I really felt comfortable doing” he explained, adding it was only later on that he saw the beauty in wood and realised this could indeed be a talent he was blessed

with. Mannetjies has an obvious and innocent infatuation with wood carving which has grown over the years. He says his carvings and sculptures are in demand as local customers are constantly knocking on his door wanting to see his latest creation. According to him they love his products so much that, as soon as they see something that is appealing to them, they grab it before someone beats them to it. He can not only create a beautiful masterpiece out of nothing, but can take old furniture, be it an old chair or table, and turn it into an entirely different product.

chase. Erasmus was dismissed in the 35th over, with Namibia still 60 adrift of their target, but Sarel Burger ensured there were no hiccups. Burger scored a patient 71-ball 37 and was unbeaten when Namibia completed the chase, with 22 balls to spare. Gerhard Erasmus claimed the man of the match award, being the only batsman across both teams to cross 50 runs. Bjorn Kotze was the most successful bowler for Namibia with 3 for 34. Canada achieved a big total on day two of the competition, totaling 257 for six in its 50 overs against Kenya at Wander e r s A ff i e s C r i c k e t Grounds. The Canadians started very positively with a 71-

run partnership between Rizwan Cheema (57) and Nitish Kumar (15) and this was backed-up by the 4th wicket, 107run partnership between captain Amarbir Hansra (43) and Navneet Dhaliwal (93). Dhaliwal was the lynchpin for the Canadian innings which included six fours and four sixes. Kenya's chase of 258 was off to a poor start as they lost their openers within six overs. Collins Obuya and Irfan Karim added 95 runs for the third wicket to revive the team's chances, but as the required rate shot up, Kenya could not prevent the regular fall of wickets. Namibian Eagles head coach, Doug Watson, commented: “It was vital

Nepal's reply got off to a shaky start losing two early wickets. The 4thwicket 34-run partnership between captain Paras Khadka (19) and Binod Bhandari (35) put the Nepalese back on track. With every wicket momentum shifted, Sharad Vesawkar (24 not out) and Shakti Prasad Gauchan (2 not out) were in the middle for the last over requiring three runs from six balls. Nepal was determined not to fall short again, after losing the previous day, and Vesawkar hit the winning runs. Namibia won its second match of the tournament defeating Uganda by 4 wickets at Wanderers. A solid half-century from Gerhard Erasmus held together Namibia's

for us to get a strong start and get a win on day one. Against Uganda we were a bit under pressure at one time during the game, but it's fantastic that the team claimed the win. We have identified a few areas for improvement and now need to focus on our next game on Tuesday.” Confirming themselves as one of the favourites for the final with their strong performance on the first two days, Namibia will be next up against Netherlands on Tuesday at 9:30. “We will use the Monday's rest day for some recovery and an easy training session in order to get our mind set on the Netherlands encounter,” Watson added. Blue Boys speel gelykop teen 10-man Spoilers
