Marshallino Beukes An Anti-Corruption investigation, regarding the lease of Farm 38 by the Walvis Bay Municipality to Erongo Quarry & Civil Works is ongoing, after alleged irregularities surfaced. The lease contract for the 300 hectares of land was signed during September 2012 for approximately N$66 000 plus N$9 900 (VAT) per month. Information indicates that Erongo Quarry sub-leased half of this land (150ha) to a Chinese company, Best

Cheer Investments Namibia cc, only a month later. The 150 hectares were allegedly leased to the Chinese company for the amount payable for the whole 300 hectares. After the Chinese became suspicious regarding the huge

amount of money they had to pay monthly, they reported it to the Walvis Bay Municipality and the Anti-Corruption Commission was informed. According to the lease agreement between the Municipality and Erongo Quarry, the 300

hectares were under no circumstances supposed to be sub-leased to a third party, and this will be the centre of the investigation. It is alleged that highplaced officials in the Walvis Bay Municipality must have been involved, as many

procedures were sidestepped. Furthermore it was specified that the company leasing the land, should have paid its first instalment after signing the lease agreement, but it seems this condition was not met. The namib times

learned this week from a trustworthy source that the ACC investigation has reached an advanced stage and after all relevant documents and evidence have been collected, the matter will be forwarded to the Prosecutor General.

The Whistler of the World celebrates 90 Years Maria Davel-Wallis

The world-renowned Italian musician-composer, Alessandro Alessandroni, master of many instruments, and prolific creator of music, celebrated his 90th birthday among friends in Swakopmund on Wednesday. The namib times had the privilege to be invited to the delightful gathering, which turned out to be a vibrant get-together, graced by music of many local artists, and by the passionate Maestro himself. The Maestro did not know

of all the groups who were lined up to make his birthday a music fest and he was deeply touched. Alessandro Alessandroni is the man behind the haunting whistling tunes in many beloved Western Spaghetti films, like A Fistful of Dollars and The

Good, The Bad and The Ugly. He has been playing the mandolin since his 13th year, and still spends 6-8 hours per day playing, composing music, or painting, as he is also an avid visual artist. The Maestro, who has already written music for Continues on page 2

more than 40 films worldwide, has a wide interest in and love for music. He has a jazz group that performs regularly. Currently, he is working on a piece for the Swakopmunder Muzikwoche, or Swakopmund Music Week in December. Looking back on nine decades, Alessandro Alessandroni is thankful... for his good health, for the very special woman in his life, for his son in America, and for the fact that - as he put it - he has been paid for amusing himself his whole career long… Maestro Alessandroni has remained a humble man, although through his mu-

sic he has had the world at his feet for decades. He says his wife, the acclaimed photographer, Margaret CourtneyClarke, has been his rock, and has given him wings, she has freed him of all the administrative chores, giving him time to focus on his music. Margaret organised a handful of great surprises for Maestro Alessandroni at his birthday – the Marimba Band , the Mascato Youth Choir, and the Trio Feminale ensemble, all contributing to the celebration of a legend through music. Alessandro Alessandroni

was the impetus behind the excitement and contagious spirit of the evening. On the Maestro’s webpage one is welcomed by a quote by Italian film music critic, Roberto Zamori, who describes Allessandroni, as “a man of extraordinary temperament, humanity and simplicity. He says Italian composers owe a lot to the work of the great Whistler… Not just for the “Spaghetti Western Sound - a genuine and classic legend of Italian cinema in the 60’s and 70’s - but also for the sonic and musical influence of many scores.”

Residents in these areas were served with notices to co-operate with the contractor, busy with the installation of new sewer lines. Construction at Obadja Uushona Street are these people supposed to move now, on such short notice, and who will take responsibility for possible damages which might occur if they decide to “move” the shacks,” one resident of Obadja Uushona Street asked. It was however explained to the namib times that this should not be a big hitch, as the contractor can only disconnect the old lines and dig trenches for the new ones. The streets which will be affected is Augustinus Ga-

roeb-, Kuruseb-, Obadja Uushona-, Kambueshe- and Immanuel Kamho Street. In general the residents are very pleased with the Municipality’s decision to substitute the old sewer lines with new ones, as this could be a permanent solution for their sewage problems. The namib times has reported repeatedly on the overflowing of sewage water in Mondesa and it seems the pledge of the residents, via the newspaper, did not fall on deaf ears.

A new Council Member, Ms Hedwig Mandean was officially inaugurated on Tuesday at the Council Chambers in Walvis Bay. Councillor Mandean will fill the position left vacant by the late Councillor Kaino Andre, who passed away in December 2014. The Mayor of Walvis Bay, Ms Uillika Nambahu welcomed Ms Hedwig to her team with the words, ‘Welcome back to the team, and welcome back on joining your brothers and sisters here. Ms Mandean, previously served on the Council from 2004 to 2010.

She was also the Principal of Immanual Ruiters Primary School from 1994 to 2013. Councillor Mandean says she is extremely grateful for the opportunity that has been given to her, to serve the Walvis Bay community. “I am very glad that I have been given this op-

portunity, when I served on the Council previously my main focus was on the Environment, however now, since the Council is already busy with various projects, I’ll help and give my support as far as I can. We need to work as a team, and not as individuals,” she concluded.

Africa's CEO of the Year 2014 on

25 years of Independence

Liesl Losper

The namib times, asked the CEO of the Walvis Corridor Group (WBCG), Johny Smith, who was identified as Africa's CEO of the Year 2014, from over 115000 nominations from 43 African states, to share his thoughts on Namibia's 25 years of Independence.

Walvis Bay Corridor Group (WBCG), CEO Johny Smith

He has been instrumental the past eight years in his role as CEO of the WBCG, to develop Namibia through Walvis Bay as an alternative trade route for various SADC countries, creating opportunities for the transport and logistics sector via Namibia and thereby growing the economic contri-

bution of the sector. We have asked Mr Smith his view on Namibia's achievements the last 25 years - and what he sees as the greatest achievements and also challenge(s) he still see ahead of us. “The Walvis Bay Corridor Group (WBCG) is proud that with the infrastructure deve-

lopment that the Government of Namibia has achieved during the past 25 years, it was able to establish Namibia through Walvis Bay as an alternative trade route for the SADC region. The WBCG through its private public partnership is ready to transform Namibia into a logis-

tics hub for the SADC region and beyond, as we are entering the next era of economic development in our country. We believe that with the commitment received from Government thus far, backed by the drive from the private sector in transport and logistics, we would be able to seize the

growth opportunities as we build our Logistics Hub. To our incoming president Dr Hage Geingob, I am confident that your vision and your wealth of experience will help ensure Namibia's continued upward trajectory. Happy Independence Day to you all.”

The newspaper has recently learnt that the goal to raise N$500 000 is nearly at hand as local efforts to help Mellissa Bester (diagnosed with cancer), have been a success. According to a spokesperson the amount in the special account suddenly rose from N$283 000 up to N$413 305 within a week's time, proving that contributions from the community, businesses and various f u n draisers have been fruitful. The namib times spoke to her mother yesterday and she said, “when I heard the good news I burst out in tears and got goose bumps all over. I am speechless. I do not know what to say besides thank you to

each and everyone who contributed. Also thank you to the Lord who has been working through Mellissa with the people of our country as they have been very generous. Thank you to the namib times as well for carrying her story. I am in the process of finding out whether Mellissa can go to South Africa to prepare for the operation as we are nearly at the N$500 000 goal,” she said. A raffle ticket sale was also done for N$20 each and three winners

were randomly chosen Wednesday evening. The third prize (Tupperware) went to Mr Stephen Marais. The second prize (also Tupperware) went to Ms Zanele Mpafa and the first prize (a beautiful painting) went to Ms Amanda Kotze. This was initiated by Ms Bianca Raats and Ms Anchen Visser. Altogether, N$23 575 was raised. Mellissa is back at the coast after receiving strong chemotherapy in Windhoek. She and her husband, Cor Bester, drew the raffle tickets.

According to Ms Raats the idea was a great success. “Every cent helps. We feel positive about the fundraiser and feel motivated. A big thank you goes out to each and everyone who bought raffle tickets and who made contributions. Congratulations to the winners,” she said. Approximately N$90 000 is still needed for Mellissa to receive the much needed stemcell transplant. Local musicians are planning to host a music festival to also help raise funds if the

necessary amount is not raised before 9 May. Stalls are available at N$500 each. The initiators are hoping that there would be enough stall entries in order to make the event possible. Anyone interested in a stall can contact Ms Raats at 081 127 8859.

Johannes Nakanyala, a Namibian Navy employee opened a case against the two men after they cornered him in the street and grabbed his mobile phone valued at close to N$800. The suspects are also alleged to have taken N$1 700 out of Nakanyala's wallet as well as two memory sticks. According to his sworn testimony in court Nakanyala said he was on his way home from a night out in Kabeljou Street at around one in the morning when he was mugged. “I was on foot going home when two guys came towards me and one of them grabbed my phone and both ran off. I decided to chase them, but took a u-turn when I noticed a Nissan March driving towards me,” he explained. He further explained that there were five men in the car and all of them got out of the car shouting insults at him, two of the three men had knives. “The two men who had already taken my phone were part of the five men in the vehicle and chased me on foot while the men in the car chased me and almost ran me over. In an attempt to flee I came across a brick wall, just as I was about to jump, two of them grabbed and pulled me off and started beating me with another videotaping,” Nakanyala recalled. Nakanyala added that the suspects went into his pockets and found a bank receipt at which point they ordered him to give them his banking pin number.

They continued beating him and took him to the main road where one of the men stabbed him with a knife in the back before the rest of them shoved him in the way of an oncoming vehicle. “Luckily for me the driver of the oncoming vehicle saw me and stopped and that gave me the opportunity to run

back home. When I got home my friend, took me to the police station and later to the hospital,” Nakanyala concluded. The suspects appeared in front of Magistrate John Sindao Liwoyo who postponed the matter to 28 May for the continuation of the trial.

eries and Marine Resources, says “Namibia is a globally important region for seabirds. At the same time, the fishing industry provides jobs and earns foreign exchange for the coun-

try. It is very encouraging that the fishing industry can be supported to become seabird-friendly, without costing jobs or losing productivity”.

Focus on the Albatross Albatrosses are the most highly threatened group of birds on earth. Fishing plays a large role in that situation. In response to the alarming decrease in many albatross populations, BirdLife International created the Albatross Task Force (ATF), to identify hotspots where seabirds and fisheries interact, and where local teams of experts could help fisheries to reduce accidental seabird bycatch. Estimates of seabird bycatch in Namibia’s hake fisheries – both trawl and demersal longline, are staggeringly high, as much as 30 000 accidental seabird deaths occur every year in the Namibian fisheries, the highest in the world. However, since 2008, ATF research onboard Namibian trawl and longline vessels has demonstrated that a few, very simple and extremely cheap measures can be used, that can all but eliminate seabird bycatch. The Namibian government has initiated the introduction of regulations to make use of measures to avoid seabird bycatch

as mandatory. However, in advance of the promulgation of regulations, the hake trawl association has begun voluntary implementation of the ATF’s recommendations. This is a highly commendable and proactive outcome. The hake longline fishery already has >60% of vessels using bird-scaring lines, and the trawl fishery have around 10% of the vessels using bird-scaring lines. With continued collaborative work these fisheries are on track to achieve full coverage of its fleet in the near future. The ATF team will now focus on working with vessels that don’t yet have experience of using seabird bycatch mitigation measures. This will entail getting on board and providing practical training to crew during production fishing. Namibia is a world-leader in implementing an almost 100% fisheries observer coverage on its fishing vessels. This provides an important opportunity - observers who have been suitably trained can potentially

collect valuable information on the effectiveness of mitigation measures, compliance with regulations, etc. To support this, the ATF offered to support the observer agency with: Training on seabird identification: Training on mitigation technical specifications; Practical training – at sea trips potentially on research vessel or observers accompanied on trawlers where space for two observers is possible; Inclusion of new data fields within existing logsheets and added to a database. BirdLife International is investigating creating a certification training course for fisheries observers. “Namibia stands at the threshold of moving, in very short time, from being the worst country in the world for seabird bycatch, to the very best. The responses from government departments, observers and the fishing industry to the ATF’s findings and recommendations has been remarkably open and collaborative. These are

WHY? The marine resources are limited and currently some of them are overfished or over collected. It is necessary that everybody uses them wisely and carefully to secure the future harvesting needs by protecting the stock. Quantity/number of marine resources harvestable, minimum size limits of fish and crayfish that can be caught, open season etc. help to manage stocks to avoid the total disappearance of some species in our waters. Do not leave bait or fish on the beach! Either take it home or return it to the sea. This food attracts scavengers like jackals and gulls that prey on other bio-diversity. When you are back home after the holiday, it also inflates the predator population. Where can you get a license for angling, crayfish diving & bait/mussels collection?

The purpose of the workshop was to consider how best to support Namibia’s fisheries to address their seabird bycatch problems. Dr Hannes Holtzhausen of the Ministry of Fish-

A second fire in just over a month, erupted at Rössing Uranium mine on Sunday afternoon. Bedotte James It seems like some media always report on incidents at certain mines only. Is this article really newsworthy? A hot bolt igniting a plastic screen? Come on. This is a mine we’re talking about. Why is it that until now we have not heard a single word in this or other

Liefie

Multichoice

When I renewed my Multichoice subscription I was told that as from 1st April it was up by N$49-00 ( it is normally N$30-00) I would like to know what is the justification for this increase? I know it is NOT for new programs, as the programs now showing are only repeats of reruns, over and over. E.G. Sunday the 15th March on Discovery World they had Bush Pilots, now about the 5th time this series has been shown. This was followed by 10 episodes of The Avi-

ators - WOW!! I know that the “Powers that be” in Windhoek have nothing to do with the programming, maybe they could find or the ‘Consumer’ of the Namibian could follow up on this. Why does Multichoice not start a system, whereby the viewer can select say, 20 channels of his/her choice and at rate of X dollars per channel.

For most pensioners TV is the only form of entertainment they have. At moment the monthly fee is more than the Government Pension, this is disgraceful, wouldn’t it be nice to give the pensioners a reduced rate. I am sure that there are many viewers who feel the same way as I do. Lets hear from them!! Disappointed Viewer

NAMAs To Honour Late Tate Kwela with Lifetime Achievement Award Self-taught late Shambo guitarist and folklore musician, Johannes Almas, stage name Tate Kwela, will be bestowed by the NAMAs - the Life Time Achievement Award for 2015. This was confirmed by NAMA Executive Chairman, Mr Tim Ekandjo. The late Johannes Almas, better known as Tate Kwela in musical circles, was born on 4 April 1943 in Akweenyaga village in Uukwambi District of Oshana Region and passed away on 23 November 2005 at the age of 62. He released a number of albums amongst them Unplugged, Mutaleni Gwandje, Kwela and Lexington and Cassette Session with hit songs like Ohela Hela and Kanailonga that are still popular long after his passing. Tate Kwela captured both young and old with his music and lyrics as he would dazzle with his guitar – much to the amusement of live audience and studio performance during a career that span over

four decades. “He was one of the first recording artist in Namibia. You would have to understand culture and language in order to make sense of his music and lyrics because they were very deep and touching. He sang about the liberation struggle without necessarily having crossed the border but fighting it with his lyrics and the oppressors could not pick up the lyrics. He was one of a very few artists that wrote all his songs himself and nobody could play the lead guitar the way he did it. He was also one of the first artists to sing about Aids in his song titled “Small Minds”. Tate Kwela could make beautiful songs without the assistance of technology and was surely an artist

in his own league up there with the likes of Oliver Mtukudzi and others.” “We are looking forward to honour this musical genius and it is a real pity that we do so now that he has passed. It is however our hope that his music will continue to inspire many musicians for many more years to come,” reminded Ekandjo. Ekandjo described Tate Kwela as a musical beacon and guiding light of Namibian Music. “Tate Kwela's flourishing oratory skills and inspirational lyrics coupled with his amazing guitar prowess – reflects the immense talent that he had as a craftman – was unparalleled. It is therefore an honour to bestow this honour to Tate Kwela”.

Water 4 Africa winners bring water-wise innovations to African continent Water, one of the scarcest commodities in Africa, is a subject that deserves the attention of all. Gone are the days of large organisations wanting to conceptualise, build and own all solutions themselves. This is largely due to the growing realisation that more innovative, and in many instances, market-ready solutions can be found by opening up the search for solutions to ‘the crowd’. A testament to this is the recent results of the Standard Bank Water 4 Africa competition. This year, Water 4 Africa saw the use of crowdsourcing, via Standard Bank’s IdeaScale platform, to attract people from Africa and around the world to put forward suggestions on solving Africa’s water supply dilemmas. “Crowdsourcing is a powerful tool to gather innovative ideas and identify practical solutions to address issues such as clean water and its conservation,” says Jayshree Naidoo, Innovation Thought Leader at Standard Bank. “In the case of Water 4 Africa, we are exceptionally pleased about the number and quality of submissions received from innovators and social en-

trepreneurs across the globe.” Entries were open to companies; educational institutions; non-government organisations and individuals between the ages of 18 and 21. Water 4 Africa challenged entrants to address issues in six major areas. These were: Groundwater, for which the emphasis was on ideas that would help ensure that communities gained long-term access to clean water. Sanitation, where the challenge was on identifying ways that sanitation could help increase access to clean water. Purification, which concentrated on simple solutions that peo-

ple could use to treat water. Filtration, with a focus on how available water could be turned into potable water. Solar, as a means of leveraging the power of the sun to purify water. Other innovative solutions that addressed the main campaign topic. An added incentive for entrants was the significant cash prizes to be awarded. A panel of expert judges recently weighed in on the submissions to identify winners in the following three categories: Late stage (deployed solutions, ready for scale) – one prize of US$10 000. Mid-stage (tested so-

lutions, ready for first deployment) – one prize of US$5 000. Early stage (new and promising concepts) – three prizes of US$2 000 each. Since the competition opened in December 2014, hundreds of entries were received and evaluated. Those that rose to the top for their potential to practically influence the preservation of precious water resources and win the prizes are:SpaTap, an ecofriendly hand washing and showering bottle shower. This Australian entry won the late stage prize to enable its inventors to expand their business to Africa. SpaTap is a pocket-sized, silicone

device that attaches to any bottle filled with water and transforms into a flow controllable shower or portable tap. This product is already on sale in several countries and has created a market niche for itself. The MAJI 1200. From Zimbabwe, this mobile, solar-powered water purification system won the midstage prize. The project, which has been tested and is ready for the market, is the brainchild of two entrepreneurs and is a true investment in Africa by Africans. Jim Murphy, a Briton living in South Africa, was awarded one of the early-stage prizes for his solar-powered

cart which enables water to be easily transported in rural areas. This is a great innovation for people who routinely have to walk long distances to get water. The Water, Sanitation and Health Hygiene (WASH) project from Tanzania, which focuses on behavioural change in WASH practices at education level, is another early stage concept winner. From Uganda, the Basic Safe Water and Sanitation Management Program, which also provides essential education earned one of the early stage accolades. “The panel of judges assessed the competition submissions

on the basis of their feasibility, how effectively they could be transformed into programmes or products that could reach many people, and their impact on communities,” says Ms Naidoo. “We congratulate the winners and look forward to the potential they have for impacting on the lives of Africa’s people. Crowdsourcing played a major role in attracting interest, and proved its potential as a valuable tool that we will continue to use to drive future innovations that are relevant to our customers, the communities within which Standard Bank operates, and society at large.”

Power to those who were at the forefront of the revolution. Their unwavering sacrifice, courage and perseverance is the current that fuels our bravery. Power to those who are plugged into the values, ideals and aspirations that waters our freedom. Let’s continue where they left off and light the course for the next 25 years. Two week HIV/Aids training course Madelaine Laubscher

A two week HIV/Aids training course kicked off on Monday at the Walvis Bay Protea Hotel, to improve skills on counselling and also to expand the HIV/Aids training process countrywide. According to a spokesperson, the objectives of the course are to provide participants with background information on HIV infection. The course also focuses on providing a basic knowledge of counselling techniques for dealing with children infected with and by HIV and Aids. It will also provide participants with un-

derstanding of how a counsellor’s attitude and beliefs can affect their interaction with a patient. Various Society for Family Health (SFH) members from different regions in Namibia attended the official opening and will stay for two weeks, receiving training. They expect to learn more about HIV, to learn more about counselling children,

to be trained in how to deal with HIV positive clients and the importance of explaining the necessity of counselling. They want to be able to do couples counselling, to gain more experience and new skills, to make the jobs of the counsellors easier. They also expect to learn how to put a positive tested person at ease, to be able to

give counselling to transsexual women in Namibia, to become more practically involved and to do same sex relationship counselling. According to Mrs Ansie Benjamin, a registered nurse from Windhoek, she wants to impart necessary knowledge during this course. Mr Daniel Lukas, a trainer and quality assurance officer from

the Catholic AIDS Action along with the Programme Director from SFH, Mrs Isabel Mendes Siyamba, is also attending. “We must be committed to get the right people involved. We need to increase access to the ACT to link positive tested persons to care and treatment. Early detection is very important. We want to equip participants with basic knowledge and skills that will enable them to be effective counsellors,” she says.

“Super love” for music Mavourlene Gaes Shinga Paulus started rapping at the tender age of 12, and his talent developed into a passion when he started composing his songs when he was just in Grade eight. Shinga, better known as Lil Joe, is young and ambitious and driven, with so much obsession for music. He attended school at Duneside High school where he completed his school career. Lil Joe says although

he may have been playing with words at first, it got serious when he discovered he could actually write his own lyrics. He loves entertaining an audience and explains he once entered a show called “Walvis

got talent” a few years back and made it to second place. “I have always been exposed to Hip Hop and spend my time listening to artists like Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, Drake and the late Catty Cat and they are really what inspired me to stick to rapping” Lil Joe says. The young talent looks up to those artists and he vows and promises to take the music industry by storm and become as famous as his idols. Lil Joe’s aim is to get his music out there - and he lives by the mottos “if you want it you can achieve it” and “the sky is the limit”. Although Lil Joe still has not released an album, he has released three singles “With a bang”, “Super love” and “Fishes in the sea” which are receiving airplay at various radio stations across the country. Fans of Lil Joe can look forward to a treat, because this artist has promised not to disappoint, with an upcoming completion of his first full album - which the artist is keeping under wraps for now.

Years of Independence in Namibia”. Was bedeutet staatliche Unabhängigkeit über-

Freiheit?

Driving Divas workshop encourage safe driving at GMSA

PORT ELIZABETH - A child standing on the front or back seat of the car or you just simply answering your cellular phone or texting while driving. Sounds familiar?

These are common unsafe practices that we often make ourselves guilty of. In a Driving Divas workshop hosted by General Motors South Africa (GMSA) for the company's female employees at Aldo Scribante this week, a number of women were reminded of safe driving habits.

Presented by Vuyi Mpofu, columnist of Driving in Heels, the workshop covered safety aspects such as using car seats appropriately, not using one's mobile phone whilst driving and how to be vigilant and avoid being potential hijack targets. Mpofu was especially critical about texting and speaking on a cellular

phone whilst driving. She said that any distraction while driving is an accident risk as there are so many things on the road to be vigilant for. "There are three types of distractions, visual, manual and mental distractions and texting involves all three." She added that drivers who are distracted by

their phones are also hijack targets. "Hijackers often target women, especially those who drive alone and who are not alert when standing still at red lights. Women often check their phones and touch up make-up when standing still. Meanwhile Hijackers check their moves and strike at this time," said

Mpofu. Esterline Martin, employee at the Chevrolet general assembly line, said the workshop was an eye-opener and a reminder of all the bad habits one has when driving. "I will from now on be extra vigilant when I drive with my grandson and I've come to realise the importance of a car

seat for him," said Martin. The workshop ended with practical driver training on the track and on the open road led by advance driving expert, Tschops Sipuka. As part of GMSA's Women's Council initiatives, this was the first of a number of workshops for women at GMSA.

Gladiators Prepare to Shine on Independence Day

Namibia Women's National Football Team Coach Jacqueline Shipanga said the Brave Gladiators are ready for Swaziland come this week Saturday. Shipanga told Nampa on Monday that 23 team members, new and old, have been in camp for the past two weeks and are doing well with preparations. Camp started on 1 March and ends on the day of the match. “Our spirit is very high at this moment because we want to play and win for our country,” she said,

adding Swaziland's national women football team, nicknamed Sihlangu Semnikati (King's Shield) have also been in camp in preparation for the Brave Gladiators. She said the Brave Gladiators are going to play with the aim of winning and will dedicate their victory to president-elect Hage Geingob, “Because he

has always been supporting us and always believed that we could do it.” Concerning challenges ahead of their first international friendly match since part taking in the 2014 Africa Women's Championship, Shipanga said the only challenge is some players not being released from school in the morning.

She noted that the team has thus far put four players of the selected team on the bench due to injuries, and two of the players based in Germany only joined the camp last week Tuesday, missing the first week of the preparatory session. She also stated that one of the ways in which she aims to keep a balance between new and old players is the use of two new goalkeepers, namely Novata Paulus of the Namibian Defence Force and Agnes Kauzuu of

JS Academy football club for the friendly this coming weekend. “We want to have a balance in the team and expose the new talents as much as possible so that when new and old players are mixed, you can't tell the difference,” she said. Naindjala aiming for redemption in Independence Boxing Bonanza

Bantamweight boxer, Immanuel 'The Prince' Naindjala is planning a dramatic comeback when he gets into the ring at the Independence Boxing Bonanza, that will be hosted at Ramatex tonight. Naindjala lost his World B o x i n g O rg a n i s a t i o n (WBO) African Bantamweight belt to Gideon Buthelezi of South Africa at the Windhoek Country Club on 7 December last year after 12 rounds of boxing. Speaking to Nampa earlier, Naindjala said he learnt a lot from his defeat to Buthelezi and is looking forward to showing the Namibian nation what he is made of in the new year. “I made a few small mistakes in my fight against Buthelezi, and those mistakes cost me my belt. I sat down with the team and they told me they still believe in me and when I step in the ring this time around I will do nothing special but just win,” he said. Naindjala, also lost his WBO Bantamweight World title to Kameda Tomaki of Japan on 3 December 2013. He has a record of 22

fights, 19 wins, one draw and two losses. He was ranked 13th by the WBO in the Bantamweight category before his fight with Buthelezi. Naindjala told this news agency that he is only looking forward to rebuilding his career. “When I stepped in the ring with Buthelezi I was ranked amongst the best 15 boxers in world but I lost that ranking and I got positive criticisms from my fans. 'Sometimes it's difficult for one to understand what happens in the ring, and all I can promise them now is I am ready to rebuild my career back, but I am taking one step at a time,” he stated. Another boxer that will be fighting tonight will be current WBO International Lightweight champion, Paulus “The Hitman” Moses, who will be the centre of attraction. Moses will fight undefeated

Paraguayan boxer Carlos Portillo in defence of his belt. Other boxers to feature on the bill are Japhet Uutoni against Sibusiso Twani from South Africa (SA), Bethuel “Tyson” Ushona against Tshepo Mandawe (SA), Julius Indongo vs Herbert Nkabiti (Botswana), and Martin Haikali will face Nkosinathi Ntsan Gase (SA), Vikapita “Beastmaster” Meroro vs Patrick Mokala

(SA), and Walter “The “Executioner” Kautondokwa vs Charles Masanjo (Malawi). In an allNamibian fight, Immanuel Mungandjela will b o x To m m y H a n g o . General tickets that usually sell for N$200 will go for N$30, while VIP tickets which usually cost N$1 000 will now cost N$200. (NAMPA)

Equestrian Coastal League Namibia Results Rossmund Golf Club News

Salom Nghinamito receiving a prize from Mrs Janine Hopking

Walvis Bay Golf Club News Bank Windhoek stepped up with an excellent competition last Saturday. Despite many regulars not being in town we still had a great field of 44 players. Well done! Although construction is at its worst at the club, Bank Windhoek kept their promise with excellent prizes and they could not have asked for better weather conditions. The individual stableford was a welcome format, as many players want to enter scores to improve on their handicaps, or so we wish it would be. Percy van Zyl and Amandio Sardinha

played well on the first nine holes with 22 points each. Johnny Borges - 21 and Gert Olivier Jnr - 20 points was not far behind on the turn. Sponsor, Jaans Stander was also killing his four ball with 18 points, that included a black out and two one pointers, after nine holes with Peet Poggenpoel also on 18. After a few pit stops and lunch the picture changed somewhat for the leaders. Obviously the halfway drinks that were spon-

Johnny Borges left with Jaans Stander

The Equestrian Coastal League Namibia (ECLN) was founded in 2011 by members of coastal based Equestrian Clubs. The ECLN was founded to grow competition and promote riders. In order to be part of the ECLN, riders need to merely sign membership with any registered equestrian clubs, situated at the coast. At all coastal tournaments, members get individual scores for the disciplines Dressage, Equitation, Show Jumping and Eventing they partake in. Once a year, a ceremony takes place were the top children, junior and adult winners get honoured. For the year 2014, the ceremony took place on 28February 2015 at the ReiterVerein Swakopmund and was this year proudly sponsored by NS Electric. The 2014 ECLN horse and rider winners and runners-up in the children age group are Anike Maritz on Midnight Rain with 96 points and Pia Gebhardt on Bastos Twahil with 50 points. In the Juniors run-up it was Kira Rohloff on Kahlua with 77 points and Salom Nghinamito on Bostos Bagheera with 71 points. In the adults category, Sumari Piepmeyer on FCS Precious Gift came first with 87 points while Michelle Künzle on Metzgers Drilling Zambezi Bodenhauzen came second with 67 points. Members of the ECLN would like to thank NS Electric for sponsoring the 2014 awards to the winners and runners-up. Members would also like to thank the ECLN grading secretary, Mrs Corinna Spaeth for her hard and dedicated work, calculating and monitoring the score sheets.

sored by Bank Windhoek had its casualties. Jaans lost to two of the four ball and Amandio could not keep up with the man from Azores, Johnny Borges and Percy also stopped playing. 1st Johnny Borges - 41 points, 2nd Peet Poggenpoel – 40, 3rd Amandio Sardinha – 38, 4th Deville Dreyer – 38, 5th Gert Olivier Jnr – 37, 6th Jacques Myburgh – 37, 7th Peet Botha – 36, 8th Percy

van Zyl – 36, 9th Grant Mather – 35 and 10th Patrick Shigwele – 35. Bank Windhoek also had 4 lucky draw prizes that was just as stunning as the big prizes. Next time you should not go home, just maybe you could have won something. Jaans Stander ended the day with words that are music to our ears: I'll be back! This Saturday is a public holiday. We do not have an official competition, but the course is open and at this stage the bar as well. We have not received any notice that we should be closed. 27 March: WBPHS Fundraiser- Contact Willie van Zyl - 081 148 2676 10 April: Night at The Races. 25 April: Nostalgia 6 RSVP: Gerald Roux 081 124 2967

Saturday 14 March was just perfect and it would appear that Mermaid Casino is one of the popular sponsors on the calendar with the first of their 3 competitions for this year a Betterball Stableford - a large field took to the fairways and played some excellent golf. From all the drops taken under the new temporary rule it would appear that we have lots of guys who enjoy playing in the rough . There were 3 x 2-clubs: F Jordaan (12); D Marx (3); L Nande (16). The winners: E van Wyk/D Benson 46pts (c/o); J vd Merwe/F Jordan 46pts (c/o); C Lawrence/G Muraisiki 46pts (c/o); T Saunderson/B Saunderson 44pts (c/o); H Ndjendja/D Haimbondi 44pts (c/o). Thanks again to Mike McCann and his team for an excellent day of golf - we look forward to the next two.

Sunday 15 March - not to be outdone the SAGES had a good turnout and also came in with some excellent scores. There was only one 2-club from Willem Engelbrecht; nearest to the pin prizes went to Uwe Bachman (7) and Shorty van der Walt (12). The winner with an excellent score of 40pts was Achmet Abrahams, 2nd: Bertie Saunderson 38pts, 3rd: Willem Engelbrecht 37pts, in 4th place all on 36pts were Tony Boesch, Tim Botha, Uwe Bachman, and new SAGE on the block Willie van Zyl. Well played and a big thank you to the sponsors Bruce & Bubble Burns (Brigadoon B & B and Art Africa). After prize giving the AGM was held and a unanimous decision was taken by all the members present to leave the committee as is for 2015. The New Committee: A Abrahams (Chairman), M Jacobs (Secretary/ Treasurer), L van der Walt, B Burns, J van der Merwe (Members). Wednesday 18 March we had a field of 22 players - great guys and thanks for the support - it was also great to see some of the old faces back on the course. The afternoon was sponsored by Swakopmund Service Station Engen and Michael once again produced a good round of golf with a total of 38pts - but alas being the great sponsor that he is forfeited his prize to Johan Kok 36pts winner of the countout over Tony Boesch - in the 9 hole competition. Clive Lawrence came out on top winning the countout over Fritz Coetzee, both scoring 20pts on the front nine. The greens are back in play on Number 11 and 12 and the course rating has been amended accordingly. Gert has informed us that they will start work on some of the front nine's tee boxes, so watch out for that. Otherwise I think one can say that our course is in an excellent condition. There are still some spots open with visiting pro Steve Basson for those of you who are not happy with their game. Saturday 21 March , Independence Day, will be the Monthly Medal sponsored by Novanam. Saturday 28 March - Club sponsored - Central Open in Windhoek Sunday 29 March - Golfer/Non-golfer Funday There are still quite a few NAGU fees outstanding - remember "no official handicap no prize" “When they were awarding a car for a hole-in-one on a certain hole, I hit a four-wood... and my ball bounced onto the bonnet of the car. Someone told me "I don't think you understand. You have to hit the hole, not the car."

Pa teen seun in Celtic finaal Marshallino Beukes
