Drug convict Logan Pretorius sued by his former landlord

inside Fishermen want answers

Madelaine Laubscher Convicted Walvis Bay drug dealer Logan Pretorius has new trouble on his shoulders. After becoming a familiar face in the Walvis Bay magistrates court in recent months for a string of alleged crimes which includes assault and kidnapping and a recent drug conviction, the landlord of a house he rented in Meersig is now suing him for N$150 000 worth of damages he caused at the property. The house, situated in Meersig's Mandume ya Ndemufayo Street is where Pretorius, along with two accomplices earlier this year allegedly kidnapped three boys and subjected them for hours to torture for allegedly trying to steal a puppie from his yard. It was also from this house's yard Pretorius' one dog lunged an attack on a young boy which left him seriously injured. A few weeks ago Pretorius

and other accomplices were arrested after a drug bust at another house which ended in a swift conviction. The highly upset owner of the house invited namib times this week to see the damage that was caused to the property. The owner provided pictures of the house as it was before. See the pictures on page eight of today's edition. “He rented the house for ten months. At first I was unaware that it would be Pretorius

renting the house, as a relative of Pretorius signed the contract. If I knew he would be living there I would not have allowed it. In the ten months he lived there he caused me immense losses. The carpets were torn by his dogs, there are blood stains on my carpets, all the doors have dog bite marks and scratches on, the windows are broken, all the blinds are torn, all the toilets are broken, mirrors are broken and some even removed

All this will cost me between N$100 000 – N$150 000 to fix before I can let anyone else rent it again. In the meantime I suffer potential income. My husband and I are pen-

sioners. We rely on the income so this is a great loss for us,” she fumed. “I will definitely sue. His relative said she cleaned the house and even said one could eat Continues on Page 2

Logan Pretorius Continued from page 1 off the floor. However the floors and the walls are filthy and the carpets are infested with fleas. A local cleaning service provider told me to repaint the walls, as cleaning it would be fruitless. When we first entered the house, the floors were covered in blood with visible dog prints which we have photographs of. I cannot believe how anyone could cause so much damage to our property,” she said. At the time of going to press, the house owner's legal representative, Mr Ugéne Thomas confirmed he is awaiting quotations for the repairs of the damage and would issue a summons with the relative who signed the rental contract as first respondent and Logan Pretorius as second respondent.

Hampers Continued from page 1 behalf of the municipality. In a press release issued by the Public Relations and Customer Service Division of the municipality, it was stated that the municipality is sympathetic to the inconveniences endured by the seniors for having travelled to the venue only to be told that the event has been postponed. The statement read as follows: "The Office of the Mayor started with a campaign to register senior citizens resident in Walvis Bay with two primary objectives: to ascertain the number of seniors in our city and where they reside. Although these objectives are not the only ones, additional data as required will affect planning for interventions relating to how best to provide care for them, be it towards the provision of orthopaedic equipment or towards bio-medical intervention when so required. The Christmas hampers will, as customary, comprise several food items and merchandise relevant to the dietary requirements of senior citizens and care must be given to not supply them with items that could potentially exacerbate allergic reactions or regression in their health status, or trigger any episode associated with illness where advanced age could be a factor. In this instance it was found that some of the items originally sourced would not befit the purpose for which they are being given. Furthermore, many of the senior citizens have not yet submitted their registration forms and it would have been unjust to dispense the hampers to only those who have registered while disregarding those who have not registered. Given the fact that provision was made for 1 000 senior citizens, there was insufficient manpower (and time) to substitute the irrelevant items with the correct ones. It must be borne in mind that the Office of the Mayor is committed to the need to balance efficiency with thoroughness, and as such it would have been short sighted to proceed with the handover amidst these reservations while attempting to serve our senior citizens with the respect they deserve. Going forward, the handover will be completed by mid next week while the registration of all un-registered seniors is ongoing.”

Striking fishermen demands answers from Labour Minister Group of businessmen hands striking fishing workers N$10 000 in cash Mavourlene !Gaёs Members of the business community of Walvis Bay handed over an envelope containing N$10 000 in cash to about 1 000 fishermen yesterday who are engaged in a weeks-long illegal strike. The cash was handed over to a representative of the striking fishermen at the Ministry of Labour, Industrial Relations and Employment Creation (MLIREC) offices yesterday morning. The chairperson of the Shebeen and Bar Owners Association, Malapi Petrus, handed the money over on behalf of the businessmen. The Regional Organiser of Mining, Metal, Maritime and Construction Workers Union (MMMC), Immanuel Petrus, accepted the money on behalf of the workers. Whilst it is not known what the money is intended for, striking fishermen handed over a second petition to a representative of MLIREC, demanding the cancellation of a Memorandum of Understanding reached last week between the Confederation of Fishing Industries of Namibia and the three trade unions best represented in the fishing industry, being Nasawu (Namibia Seamen and Allied Workers Union, Nafau (Namibia Food & Allied Workers Union) and NFI &FWU (Namibia Fishing Industries & Fisher Workers Union) to get structures in place to improve working conditions at sea and improve remuneration.

Striking fishermen distanced themselves from this MoU, arguing they have left these unions in large numbers in recent weeks and assumed member-ship at MMMC and other trade unions affiliated under the Namibia National Labour Organisation (Nanlo). MMMC has no representation in the fishing industry in terms of recognitions agreements. Nasawu, Nafau and NFI & FWU has recognition agreements in place across the board in the fishing industry. Petrus of MMMC handed the petition to a representative of MLIREC, Gertrud Uusiku, requested an answer by the Minister of Labour, Erkki Nghimtina by Monday over the MoU. “We want the minister himself to give us an answer. We will give him time until Monday. This is not a new thing but has been coming for years,” said Petrus. Petrus wants fishing industry employers and striking fishermen to reach an agreement on the way forward by Wednesday. In the meantime, the fishing industry continues to make use of substitute crews to man fishing vessels at sea, in order to keep fish production in motion.

NUNW Blasts Illegal Fishermen Strike the workers to organise themselves” said Kasuto. NUNW is calling upon the Ministry of Labour Inspectorate to step up their activities as the non-visibility are living the exploited and unorganised workers very exposed and desperate for any kind of assistance. NUNW urge that more stringent actions be taken against employers that are violating the Labour Act as much as workers are called to task if they violate the same Namibian laws.

Whilst a group of businessmen yesterday donated N$10 000 to show support for fishermen engaged in a stretched out illegal strike over alleged poor work conditions at sea, the National Union of Namibian Workers (NUNW) through its President, Ismael Kasuto condemned the illegal strike as pointless with no measured objectives in mind. He warned fishermen are now in danger of job losses. “We denounce and condemn the current ongoing coordinated unprotected (illegal) strikes with no clear measured objectives. We again urge our affiliate membership to be cautious into being ambushed into the darkness” said the President of NUNW Ismael Kasuto. According to Kasuto, unprotected strikes are dangerous given both the current ill intended economic and politi-

cal consequence of the strikes which could result in national economic catastrophe and as well as potential massive job losses due to the illegal action. “We might end up losing everything for nothing”. Exploitative employers are equally responsible for the scrappy collective bargaining forums that is the breeding ground for sectoral anarchy. As a Workers' Fede-

ration, NUNW is hurt to see the Namibian Workers standing a chance to lose employment due to a collective illegal action. NUNW sympathise with the workers’ struggle and is not at peace with the current situation on the ground with due consequences, he said. NUNW plead to the affected Employers to look at minimising the impact of joblessness through envisaged

dismissals and to rather find consensual alternate ways. NUNW also calls the Government of the Republic of Namibia not to entertain elements that is orchestrating illegal strikes as it could lead to a breakdown of structures that should serve a purpose in our employment setup. “It further promotes anarchy where every recognised or nonrecognised Union or aggrieved workers could march to the State House for employment grievance in any industry without following the due processes; we should rather promote structural adherence and for

Fishermen demonstrating

“As the NUNW we fully support and throw our weight behind the agreement between NAFAU, Namibia Seaman Allied Workers Union, Namibia Fisherman Industry Union, Confederation of Fishing Industry Association and the Ministry of Labour, Industrial Relations and Employment Creation as it is in the best interest of all stakeholders including the affected workers.” According to Kasuto, NUNW don't discourage legal strikes; but

the current collective illegal actions is uncalled for and this could also be attributed within the workers' organisational structure and or ineffectiveness of collective bargaining forums. “The workers struggle for economic independence is genuine and this cannot be achieved without collective effort from all sectors through constructive engagement at various platforms,” Kasuto concluded.

U-turn causes agony Bernabé Blaauw

A motorist learned the hard way Tuesday morning, just before 08:00, that the solid line in Sam Nujoma Avenue in front of Venus Supermarket is there for a purpose. Motorists seem to ignore this line on a regular basis and a serious accident was narrowly averted when a motorist made a U-turn in front of the shop and was struck by another vehicle travelling in the direction of the town centre. After the impact, one of the vehicles was seen moving along on two wheels for several metres after it landed on all four wheels again. The brake marks on the road was also an indication that this vehicle was moving extremely fast. It seems that both vehicles were in the wrong but fortunately no one was seriously injured although one of the drivers suffered from shock.

A seven days long illegal strike of the national rail carrier's locomotive operators, their assistants, shunters and other key staff ended on Tuesday, thanks to intervention by TransNamib's newly elected Board of Directors whom were installed by Transport Minister Alpheus //Naruseb on Monday and introduced to workers on Tuesday. Operators and other staff returned to work immediately after reaching accord. It was shoulder to the wheel to work off the back log caused by a weeklong halt of all railway activities across the country. This was confirmed by Struggle Ihuhua, Executive Spokesperson of TransNamib. Ihuhua also said, “the Board showed commitment to the course of TransNamib and convened an exclusive consultative meeting with the representatives of the train operators and assistants to discuss the list of grievances that gave rise to the illegal strike.”An agreement to immediately end the strike was reached on Tuesday. The new Board would be given at least one month to settle into TransNamib business and figure the way to profitability that persistently evades the national rail carrier.Soon after assuming their positions, the Board and Management issued an apology to the Namibian public, especially railway customers, who were either directly or indirectly been affected. “We, as the new Board of Directors, commit to turn around the fortunes of TransNamib, and we will need a bit of tolerance, support and understanding for us to do justice to TransNamib for this company to become a key economic player”, Paul Smit, Chairperson of the Board stated.

During the strike of TransNamib's locomotive operators, over 200 heavy duty and tanker trucks were counted, on one day, travelling the 400 kilometres between Windhoek and Walvis Bay. Approximately 50 percent of these vehicles were fuel tanker trucks. This meant that a truck could be encountered every almost 2 kilometres, making driving this route extremely dangerous with all the other vehicles following in the wake of every truck.

Suicide: The leading cause of death at the Coast Mavourlene !Gaёs A total of five Namibians committed suicide in the Erongo Region during October and November this year alone, leading to collective concerns among the fraternity of social workers in the Region. These statistics were made available by the Ministry of Health & Social Services this week which also indicates nationally a total of 477 people died at their own hands in the period September 2013 to September 2014. With the number of suicides on the increase in the Erongo Region, namib times consulted one of the concerned social workers, Adelheid Lekobane, at the Walvis Bay State Hospital this week. The visit aimed to establish possible causes for suicides, but more important to identify tell-tale signs and possible interventions to prevent suicide. Several reasons can lead to people making that dreadful decision to end their lives. According to Lekobane many suicides are relationship-related. In most instances people are devastated emotionally after finding out their partners were cheating on them or are dumped for another love partner. “They got cheated on or they were dumped, or the husband found someone else and moved out. Those are regular cases for us.”, explained Lekobane, adding another relationship-based cause of suicide is when the victim has to come to terms with grief over the loss of a child or a parent. Lekobane further explained that one of the underlying factors they find often is people decline to obtain professional help and usually shield themselves or isolate them-selves. “Often, we would receive patients who are suicidal or even attempted to commit suicide, yet they even refuse to talk to us about their problems upon arriving at the hospital. We would then admit them, administer a tranquiliser to calm their emotions and to get sleep. We find in most cases the patient would then start to open up and express willingness to talk,” according to Lekobane. Lekobane cautions people not to take the suicidal threats lightly. “If the person you know shows stressful emotions and would for instance openly say he or she would commit suicide, action is needed immediately. No person would say such things without reason. It should be reported to us for professional assistance.” She added that we as people have the tendency of responding with comments like: “If you want to kill yourself, just do it I do not care”. That is wrong and dangerous and could result in an actual suicide. “We should also look at how frequently the person talks about killing themselves. If they say it once, then say they are joking and do not repeat it again, it is another matter. If they continuously repeat these words, it is no longer a joke.” Lekobane concluded by saying they receive suicidal patients weekly and often people are admitted who had a failed suicide. “In a typical week they get three to five patients who attempted to commit suicide. Many of these incidences occur during weekends.”

Municipality project to open doors of skills for youngsters Liesl Losper

The Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA) has donated equipment worth about N$1.6 million to seven Namibian projects. N$880 000 worth of donations for Swakopmund and Walvis Bay was part of this gesture. The events was attended by the Ambassador of Turkey in Namibia, Deniz Çakar, as well as the TIKA Namibia Country Director, Cuneyt Esmer. “This donation is part of Turkey's vision for its Africa Policy, which is based on equal partnership on equal footing. In Turkey we emphasise a lot on

Education. Education can fight poverty and we hope that through this project a lot of young people can get educated and upgrade their skills,” Çakar said. Walvis Bay Mayor Uilika Nambahu received media equipment, after months of coordination and deliberations between the Office of the The State of the Art Equipment the municipality received to start their project Mayor and the Turkish International Cooperation and Coordinating Agency (TIKA). The mayor explained that the need of skills is so obvious in our community and it is this mismatch between skills and what the industry requires that fuels and increase unemployment especially among our youth. “This is indeed when the idea came to start a Multi-Media Training Project with particular emphasis on training young unemployed Walvis Bay residents” she said. Swakop River Olives - A Taste of the Peaceful Life One of the excellent local products you will find at the Farmhouse Deli are Swakop River Olives and Olive oils, grown and pressed ten kilometers down the river from the Strand Hotel Swakopmund. The olive is a symbol of peace, wisdom, glory, fertility, power and pureness, held in a nearly mystical regard by religions and peoples from ancient Greeks to modern Christians and just about every major Mediterranean culture throughout history. We have records of the health and nutritive benefits of olives and olive oil tracing back to ancient Greece. Greek Olympians cleaned themselves with oil before a competition, and in 500 B.C. Hippocrates is recorded as having recommended olive oil for muscle pains, stomach aches and cholera. Olive trees grow naturally in Greece, Italy, northern Africa and the Middle East, thriving in what for most plant life would be the worst conditions. They like dry, hot places with poor soil. Olive trees are now cultivated all over the world in places where the conditions are right. Successful efforts at cultivation have been made in Southern Europe, the Americas and Australia, and for a couple of decades now, olive trees have been growing right here in Namibia! A little over ten kilometers inland of Swakopmund is an area referred to by locals as “the plots” which is a series of privately

help the unemployed young people to get training in the disciplines of photography, videography, editing and graphic designing. Details of these training programs are yet to be released. She urged the youngsters that have a particular interest in this sort of industry to be on the lookout for Public Service Announcements regarding the commencement of the training sessions. Also during this week, TIKA sponsored two sets of brick making machines handed over this week, one for Swakopmund (DRC) and another one for the Walvis Bay Tutaleni community.

owned properties along the Swakop River where you will find horse stables, camel stables, ostrich farms and an olive grove. Each cultivar has its own distinct flavour, much like a wine. The process for preparing the olives for consumption is even more laborious. Olives are washed every day for twenty days in different solutions, and then placed in a brine and vinegar solution for six to nine months. The result is the best tasting olives in the southern hemisphere. Up to the point that the olives go into the thoroughly modern press the harvest procedure is more or less the same as it has been for the last few thousand years. Workers in the grove collect the olives by hand, wash them by hand, and even inspect them by hand for quality and firmness. Only the best olives will be prepared for consumption. Swakop River Olives is a place where the traditions and customs of thousands of years continue to flourish and grow fruit. Planted from saplings imported from around the Mediterranean, the genealogy of the Swakop River trees can be traced back to ancient Greece.

Owners Perturbed by Rubble on Erven in Kramersdorf Maria Davel-Wallis Owners of properties and guest houses in Kramersdorf have expressed their dissatisfaction over rubble dumped on several empty erven. One of the owners who tried to get the situation rectified, lodge owner Danie Holloway contacted the municipality, and reported the case. "Dewald Duvenhage at the Municipality has been very helpful - they inspected the premises and said they would take it further. The owner(s) of the erven were instructed to remove the rubble, but that was quite some time ago. Since then nothing has happened. At first the owner of the erven brought in clean sand, seemingly to fill up and level the surface of the erven. But later he seemingly started to dump rubble on the erven - and that has upset many owners of properties there. “We have such beautiful views of the dunes and now that has been spoilt people staying with us pay a lot to enjoy the time they spend here - and to have to look at that, is not good for the town, for tourism or for our business. After all - it is against regulations, according to the municipality," said Holloway. namib times then contacted Dewald Duvenhage, who is the General Manager, Engineering Services, at the Municipality of Swakopmund, and he answered our questions promptly. “The owner(s) of the erven were informed that the disposal of building rubble onto an erf is not compliant with the requirements of Building Regulations. They were put on notice to remove the rubble within 7 days, failing which the rubble will be removed at their cost. The erven are in the new extensions of the Kramersdorf suburb of Swakopmund. As previously stated such action is non-compliant with the requirements of the Building Regulations. The rubble has not been removed. The Municipality will now continue as stated in the Notice. The regulation states: Section: 19. DUMPING OF MATERIALS (a) No person shall, without the permission of the Local Authority in writing under the hand of the Town Clerk or Secretary first has and obtained, accumulate, dump, or deposit, or cause or permit to be accumulated, dumped, or deposited on any land or premises any rubbish, waste material, disused motor-cars, or other vehicles or machinery as well as the disused parts thereof. The Local Authority in granting its permission may limit the period of its currency and impose any conditions which, having regard to the circumstances of each case, it may deem fit. (b) Any person who contravenes the provisions of paragraph (a) of this regulation or who fails to comply with any condition imposed by the Local Authority in terms thereof shall be guilty of an offence. We prefer not to warn the inhabitants of our town – we request their cooperation. In this case, it would be appreciated if the land is not despoiled with building rubble which may complicate construction processes and any possible gardening on the premises. Suitable fill material is commercially available at reasonable cost and should best be used.”

Municipality acts on complaints Madelaine Laubscher Shortly after a report in namib times, dealing with concerns of Meersig residents over missing and damaged road signs and sand encroachment which affects traffic safety, the municipality responded, replacing some of the damaged signs. Some of the critical sand spots were cleared from the streets as well. The municipality viewed the report in a positive light, as the public through the newspaper can act as “eyes and ears” to maintain service delivery. Mr Kevin Adams, spokesperson for the municipality of Walvis Bay assured more signs will be replaced and the local authority has an ongoing program to control sand encroachment. Turkey donates brick making machines to coastal communities The Brick Making Machine

Sharlien Tjambari

On Tuesday, the Turkish Embassy through the Office of the Governor of the Erongo Region handed over a brick making machine to the community of DRC. The machine was taken in acceptance by the Shack Dwellers Association, with the Municipality of Swakopmund and Erongo Regional Council that will assist in giving momentum to the brick making process. A similar machine was also handed over to Walvis Bay's Tutaleni community this week. The Ambassador of Turkey to Namibia, H.E. Deniz Cakar, said at the handing over ceremony the donation is part of Turkey's vision for its Africa Policy, which is based on equal partnership on equal footing. Turkey in 2014 alone channelled US$3.3 billion globally in developmentaland humanitarian assistance. Cakar emphasized that out of the US$3.3 billion, US$783 million is earmarked for Sub-Sahara countries, including Namibia. According to Cakar the global humanitarian assistance report of 2015 puts Turkey in the ranks as third largest provider of monetary assistance for humanitarian aid and development in the world. The Governor of Erongo Region, Clr Cleophas Mutjavikua who witnessed the handing over, said the sole purpose of the machine is for the people of DRC to help themselves to construct their houses. With the brick maker and the raw materials secured, the people's will and skill is the final ingredient to produce the masses of bricks to build houses. Mutjavikua pointed out this machine is not the last, but it will be important to see how the machine is utilised. “We have to see how you utilise this machine,” said Mutjavikua, adding the machine will only be located at one place. This machine is for everyone who wants to form bricks and want to build. All they have to do is to liaise with the representative of the Shack Dwellers Association, explained Mutjavikua. “The aim is to request the Municipality to provide sand, so you can come with you own cement and start forming your own bricks” said Mutjavikua. He undertook to also see what the Regional Government can do to assist the process. “Let's build the country, our assignment is to build the country,” Mutjavikua concluded.

Wilhelm Itope - small business beacon of light Mavourlene! Gaёs Wilhelm Itope is proof that a powerful pact can exist between previously disadvantaged entrepreneurs and Government agencies that are tasked to develop and grow Namibia's SME sector. namib times visited the vibrant entrepreneur this week to get an understanding of his unique traits and value system that brought him from humble beginnings with a mere N$2 000 loan in 2012, to start his own business, to an economic engine today that employs five people, a large loan that enabled him to expand and the ability to take in interns from other vocational institutions for on-the-job training. Itope is the owner of Lindamuna Trading CC in Kuisebmond. He secured a N$2 000 loan at the beginning of 2012 from the Youth Credit Scheme, a financing scheme founded a year earlier as a joint initiative by the Ministry of Sport, Youth and National Service and the Namibia Rural Development Project. Youth between the ages of eighteen and thirty-five can apply for loans at the Credit Scheme to

start a business to become financially independent and become the employers and economic contributors of tomorrow. Itope, who does joinery work, founded his business Lindumuna Manufacturing Projects in 2011. He faced the challenges most start-ups face, lack of proper funding, no access to financing to acquire machinery and a shortage of business skills. After hearing from the Youth Credit Scheme from a neighbour he took the chance and applied for a loan at the beginning of 2012.“I did not know anything about the credit scheme and when I heard about it, I approached the ministry offices at the Multi-Purpose Centre in Walvis Bay for more information. I was not exactly sure what the programme was about.” Wilhelm further says he met with a very helpful official, he only now recalls by

the name Thomas, who explained the entire process to him. Thomas actually convinced to him to join the programme. “In the beginning of 2012, I applied for the small loan of N$2 000. I underwent basic business management training for a few days and huge was my joy when I learnt I secured the loan,” explained Itope. Adding he used the loan to expand his business. “I paid the money back within the first three months, after paying back, I returned to the Ministry to apply for a second loan. I was given a second loan of N$6 000, which I used to buy machinery and equipment for my business.” He was then granted a higher loan of N$20 000 which he continues to pay off on time. Thanks to the loan capital Itope's business completed over 60 projects since. From Itope's advice namib times

A completed project of Wilhelm concluded youths are to exercise discipline in all aspects of their lives and to remain focused on what opportunities they wish to pursue it is also important to grab at every opportunity to learn business skills, as a business consist of many facets including general management,

finance, marketing and operations. We can all learn from Itope the importance of excellence and customer service, as this creates more opportunities if

your customers are referring others to you. Last but not least, from Itope we all learn that financial discipline is paramount. He used his funds

wisely to expand his business and he keeps his word and honour to repay his loans and thereby forge a trust relationship with his source of funding.

Motorists and pedestrians in Walvis Bay's 6th Street were alarmed yesterday morning, just after 08:00, when a fire truck was seen rushing to the offices of Financial Consulting Services (FCS). The good news was that there was no smoke or fire, but that the whole exercise was a fire drill. The staff of FCS gathered on the pavement in front of the building where they were addressed by the acting fire chief of the Municipality, Mr Dennis Basson. The staff were trained in Emergency Plans and Fire Drilling procedures by the former fire chief, Mr Willie van Zyl, and the process culminated in the fire drill. Mr Van Zyl retired last year and started his dream of teaching fire safety to the community with his new company, West Fire. He said that he was extremely satisfied with the results of the exercise.

-Erlebnis erinnern? Ihre Susann Kinghorn
