Carlo Gordon, the skipper of the trawler Resplendent that sunk off the central Namibian west coast on Tuesday, is believed to have followed that unspoken rule of prudent seamanship: be the last one to leave the ship, if not the one to go down with the ship. Resplendent went down at approximately 13:00 on Tuesday some 100 nautical miles northwest of Walvis Bay. Apart from skipper Gordon unaccounted for, all the remaining crew of 26 were rescued by fishing vessels which were also in the area: Fisher Bank, Victory and Begonia. Resplendent is owned and operated by Hangana Seafood Processors, a subsidiary of O&L Group. Accounts from the survivors confirm Gordon refused to leave his illfated ship, as he wanted to make sure no crew were left behind. Continues on page 2
