Possible avian flu at the coast Piquet Jacobs

Local birdwatchers and environmentalists are concerned of the possibility of Avian (Bird) Influenza (Flu) Type A virus, among Pelagic birds along the Namibian coastline, as several reports of sick and dying birds, mainly that of the Cape Cormorant and Tern, started pouring in over the last two weeks. The virus occurs naturally among wild aquatic birds worldwide. Although avian flu viruses do not normally infect humans, they can infect domestic poultry and other bird and animal species. The Ministry of Agriculture Water and Forestry has since then started to test for the virus and is awaiting the test results. In the meantime, the public is

Dove Air Technology start-up called Sonder Design, which he sold to the world's largest manufacturer Foxconn International Holdings who is a supplier of Apple. Serra-Martins recently partnered with four Namibian youth to establish a Namibian tech based entity devised at tackling illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing in our territorial waters and the pouching of the Namibian wild life and to deliver essential services like medicine to remote areas using long range unmanned aerial drones paired with artificial intelligence. Co-Founder and Director of Dove Air Technology CC Namibian Quintin Simon said that to safeguard Namibia's fisheries and wild life resources in the country requires fast response, simple operation, convenient maintenance, low operation cost and no personnel security risks. Simon said the Drones will cover the Namibian fishing water and wild life areas over the shortest periods of time possible to meet marine and wild life security law enforcement requirements. According to Simon, Dove Air Namibia are currently in advanced discussions with government entities and the Namibia Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) as well as private corporate institution with a chief goal to initiate a pilot phase. Simon said, “the pilot phase is aimed to tackle illegal unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing in our exclusive economic zone (EEZ) and illegal pouching of wild life of Namibia by providing both efficient and cost-effective data collection and monitoring solutions for fisheries and wild life managements which will assist the Ministries to meet its legislative objectives.” “There will be no financial obligations to the

government during the proposed pilot phase as the company have committed to absorb all cost as part of our investment,” Simon added. Simon said that illegal unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing and pouching of wild life deprives Namibia billions Namibian dollar annually. He explained that Dove Air's unmanned aerial drones unique value proposition is the fact that they are manufactured in Johannesburg, South Africa, can monitor the sea situation from the air covering a range of +- 800 km (497 miles) with a single flight time of about 12 hours, carry a pay load of up to 19kg (41lbs) cold chain and can take off and land vertically anywhere like on vessels for example. Our Doves are also equipped with high tech imagining systems that can capture all necessary data day or night insuring the monitoring and patrolling process can be coordinated 24 hours a day giving the perpetrators no place to hide. He explained that the artificial intelligence industry has a revenue opportunity of more than R 2,3 Billion has been approximated in South Africa, including more than 33 800 jobs and it is imperative for us Namibians to anticipate the needs of the labour market and position economic development of our communities to attract investment in industries and services of the future. “As part of the company's strategic vision, we are planning to establish a Technology and Innovation Hub in Namibia which will focus mainly on assembling unmanned aerial drones, creating new avenues of employment for recruitment in the fourth industrial revolution (4IR) and to teach our youth new aligned TVET skills as the market share for drone technology increases,” Simon concluded. Swakopmund Town Council announces completion of upgraded roads Eileen van der Schyff

The Swakopmund Town Council prioritised the upgrading of roads around schools late last year, and are pleased to announce the completion of the upgrading of Kwikstertjie Street, Suikerbekke Street and Mossie Lane around Atlantic High School in their Planning/Development/Construction and Maintenance of the Road Project. Problem areas were determined and an assessment of the condition of the town's road infrastructure was included in the Integrated Infrastructure Master Plan in 2020. The town council appreciates the public's assistance in reporting pothole and deterioration of roads to

their Works Section as it enables the council to be proactive and by doing so avoid rising costs. The public is urged to keep on reporting problem areas by providing the street name, area and photos. Because of tight schedules, higher priority areas are first attended to.

urged to be cautious and refrain from handling any sick looking bird. When walking your dogs on the beach make sure to keep them away from any birds. Typical symptoms of this virus infection in seabirds include tame or dazed behaviour, weakness, an inability to sit or stand up, twitching, seizures and less typical, mucus on the beak or around the eyes. Meanwhile, we would like to ask the public to avoid any contact with infected birds as well as their secretions, not to touch birds, or those that are suspected to be infected, with bare hands, and to report to the health facility if you have flulike symptoms within 10 days of handling birds. Emmy-Else Ndevaetela, Ministry of Health and Social Services Control Health Program Officer says, “We kindly advise that the regional teamwork with veterinary counterparts in the investigations and prevention, including safety disposal of the birds as they pose health risk to humans if it turns out to be zoonotic and to other poultries including domestic ones. These needs to be incinerated. Since these are migratory birds, all teams alongside the coastal areas including ||Kharas (Luderitz) should be on alert for this.” The public is urged to report any visibly sick, dying or dead seabirds along the Walvis Bay and Swakopmund coastline to the Walvis Bay State Vet at 064 205313.

Venaani wants answers Piquet Jacobs

During a visit to the National Fuel Oil Storage Facility on Monday this week, Member of Parliament and Leader of the Popular Democratic Movement (PDM), McHenry Venaani, highlighted concerns of the security and profitability of the star-of-the-art facility. The facility consists of a tanker jetty, multiple product pipelines and a terminal consisting of seven tanks with a capacity of 75 million litres. The tanks are used to store petroleum products like diesel, ULP (unleaded petrol), and HFO (heavy fuel oil). According to Venaani, the facility is one of the government's biggest investments and it is important to get a clear understanding of what exactly money was spent on especially in the light of cost escalations. The project was estimated at a cost of N$3.7 billion in 2015 when construction commenced, but costs have since soared to N$6.5 billion, with the government planning to put up an additional N$87 million in November 2021. “The biggest question is the escalation of pricing because this thing cost double of what is was supposed to cost. We must ask the hardhitting questions of what led to the escalation. Telling the country that because of the United States Dollar (USD) exchange rate, the costs have increased, nothing in economics can increase due to fluctuation in foreign currency. We need to hear the answers as to what really transpired,” he said. In response to this, Senior Structural Engineer, Kondwani Chirembo commented that costs escalated due to changes which had to be made to the original designs to fulfill all the wants and needs prescribed by the government. Another matter stressed by Venaani, the matter of security, “one thing that you must realise is the oil industry is a very highly competitive industry. You are competing with companies such as Puma and Engen. If you have visited the Niger Delta Pipelines and you know what is happening in that part of the world, you would realise that such a facility would need proper

security.” Venaani made it clear that his concerns come from his belief that the project is of national

importance, and it is important to ensure the money was spent wisely. Although his questions were not answered by

the NAMCOR team onsite, Venaani added that he will be redirecting his questions to the head office.

School News

The Dolphin Schools Since its establishment in March 2003, The Dolphins Schools has had its aim excellent academic standards, to provide children with quality education in a warm, caring environment. The school strives to educate not only future leaders and innovators, but also responsible, active citizens of society. In 2022, a twelfth group of Grade 12 students will be writing the International Senior Certificate (ISC) under the examining authority of the Independent Examinations Board (IEB). “Following our excellent academic track record, we look forward to yet another 100% pass rate! Furthermore, we are extremely proud of our 85% Bachelor's Degree entrance pass achieved at the end of last year. We work hard to make each child feel seen, heard and appreciated for his/her own unique set of talents. This is achieved with, amongst others, a small teacher to student ratio with a maximum of 22 students / class (a ratio we would ideally like to maintain), suitably qualified teachers and a very enthusiastic management team.” The school currently have students ranging from the ages of 4 up to Grade 12, whom have a wide variety of sport and extracurricular activities offered during school hours. These include hockey, netball, rugby, cricket and water safety (up to grade 4). The school

is also home to an awarding winning choir; students are taught African drumming and playing the marimbas as part of their musical lessons at school. “At our school we understand that our school's main focus should be to realise each child's potential to lead, innovate and serve with confidence in a changing global world - most probably outside of the 'safety' of the borders of Walvis Bay and Namibia.” The Dolphin Schools Top Candidates History: 2010 Lee-Ann Majiedt 73.57% 2011 Kyle Volschenk 66.86% 2012 NdeshiMuatunga 73.13% 2013 Shannon Volschenk 76.63% 2014 Johan van Zyl 74.57% 2015 Clara Liebenberg 82.63% 2016 Charlene Esterhuizen 73.86% 2017 Megan van Wijk 82.14% 2018 Tiyana Meyer 79% 2019 Roux-chè Shidute 76.43% 2020 Roberth Gaoseb 79.57% 2021 Mornè Riekert 74.43%

Mathews further said, “to be honest I am not that happy with the fact that all of these dogs do not have homes, I wish I could adopt all of them, unfortunately I can't. Member unexpectedly wins Contributed A Member of the Walvis Bay Golf Club beat the club's Committee by 21.5 to 13.5, in the opening event of the Golf season at the harbour town. How different it could have been if only that cart did not break down [sabotage maybe] on the first hole fairway, and also if on number one tee box the ball would have travelled further than the tee, and if the one missing committee member [away in Cape Town] was here - but then all those if's were only that…if's. Well played the members who how lead the CHAIRMAN'S Cup race 3-2 and also were the first members that successfully defended the CUP.

It was great to see 34 players turn out to take on the eight committee members. It is a long while ago that we had a field of 42 on the course and long may this continue. The winner on the day was Tangeni Mpupa winning a count out on 42 points from Wynand Breyenbach, with Andre Burger third on 40 points. The luck draws went to Henjan van Hyde and Amandio Sardinha, and Amandio also won the closest to the pin on 2/11. On the photo is Members Captain Tienie de Wet accepting the trophy from Club Captain Shane Westerdale. This coming weekend is the now newly named, CARLOS de GOUVEIA PAIRS. It is a 27-hole event with the format being first nine – foursomes, second nine - better ball and the third nine - both scores to count. Obviously there will be an earlier tee off so watch the platforms for details. The list will be up soon. The AEGIR MARINE WALVIS BAY OPEN will be played on 29 and 30 January and the TBC will be on 5 February with the Local Sages on 6 February. The eleven Junior Golf members from the Walvis Bay Golf Club participated last weekend at a

junior tournament at Omeya near Windhoek. The results were as follows: E Division - overall winner was Emery Maboh with Emelio Maboh in second place D Division - 6th place Ashley Martins, 9th place Kian Martins, 11th Place Cathlene Baard C Division - overall winner Francois le Roux and third place Ethan Johnson A Division - Willie Els 158, Kyle Johnson 158, JP Johnson 198 and Connor Gibsons 187 On the photo are all our proud prize winners on the day. The clubs management thank Grant Mather and Poena Johnson for the efforts that are putting in with these juniors. “The youngsters are indeed going to be the future of our club and the sterling work by Mather and Johnson will ensure that we have a future.”
