is blykbaar aangevoer.
AR welcomes Geingob’s willingness to negotiate as deadline looms Marshallino Beukes The land issue in Namibia is approaching boiling point, with the Affirmative Repositioning (AR) Movement’s 30 July - deadline to get land, less than two weeks away. The AR yesterday welcomed President Hage Geingob’s press statement which surfaced on Friday, in which he expressed his willingness to engage in dialogue with AR leaders. The land activists commented on Geingob’s press statement yesterday, saying they welcome the statement and are willing to engage in dialogue, with the view to find a solution. However, the AR’s state-
ment continues, saying, “With 11 days left to the date of 31 July 2015, the date which will bring a total of 9 months for government, through its local authorities, to provide land for residential purposes to our youth, we
remain determined to occupy land for residential purposes. We are ready for anything, jail or death, we will occupy land. This struggle will not be suppressed. No surrender, No retreat!” In his statement, the Pres-
ident said “the actions taken by the Swapo Party Politburo to expel its members, due to ill-discipline, have no bearing on Government’s position to engage on the pressing land and decent shelter issue faced by the country.”
The statement further described the demand for each Namibian to have decent shelter, as a legitimate demand, but it further stated that the said deadline for land delivery was “either ill-conceived or insincere.”
The Legal Assistance Centre in another press release yesterday, expressed their concern about the matter. They have called upon the landless and AR movement to seriously consider how their actions might Continues on page 2

Dr Hage Geingob move Namibia to a place where it has not been since independence, “a place of civil unrest and strife.” They furthermore urge the Government to address these concerns, by lawful means, with real urgency. response read, “Yes, the Swakopmund Municipality is aware of the threat, but the matter is receiving the necessary attention.” The AR started the Movement, comprising mass land applications from landless youths countrywide, on 21 November 2014 and gave the Namibian Government until 30 July 2015 to come up

Swakopmund alive with music
The Mascato Youth Choir under the leadership of Theo Cookson, gave a touching performance in the German Lutheran Church in Swakopmund on Saturday night. One of the highlights of the programme was The Ground by Ole Gjeilo, accompanied by the ensemble, Swakopmund Strings Attached. It was the first time that the Choir and the ensemble collaborated in a performance. The revered violinist Heinz Czech, is one of the members of the ensemble. In Friday’s edition of namib times we’ll focus in depth on the Mascato
Youth Choir, and its programme for the months ahead. On the other side of Otavi Street in Swakopmund on Saturday night, in the Cosmopolitan, the world renowned musician, Alessandro Alessandroni and his ensemble shared the
joy of music with another audience, in what has become a twice-a month event. The venue was full to capacity, and the lovely, talented Namibian vocal artist, Sharon van Rooi also joined in at some stage, to the delight of the audience.

Okombahe is situated about 70 kilometres east of the Uis settlement in the Erongo Region. Constituency Councillor for Daures, Ehrnst Katjiku revealed this to Nampa on Wednesday during an interview at his office when he was giving an update of development projects in the constituency. “After more than 20 years of lobbying for Okom-
bahe to be proclaimed a settlement, we eventually received good news last month,” he said. Katjiku added that although Okombahe has a settlement office and was referred to as a settlement before, it was still a growth point pending the official decision which came through last month. The councillor is excited that the proclamation al-
lows for faster development and provision of further services such as sewerage and water reticulation. “People can now invest in Okombahe without fear. Their properties will be protected as they will have rights to such properties,” he said. Responding to a text message published in the ‘Namibian’ newspaper in which a resident of Okom-
bahe complained that some elders in the settlement use candles as there is no electricity, Katjiku said that situation will soon be a thing of the past. “In two months’ time, the Erongo Regional Electricity Distributor company will kick-start the rural electrification process to some of the houses in Okombahe that do not have power.
So very soon, our people will have electricity,” he assured. Highlighting other development projects, Katjiku mentioned the paving of the road from the settlement office to the clinic. Other projects include the re-gravelling of the road between Omatjete and Omaruru, as well as the gravel road from Uis to Omaruru.
He said work on these roads started early this year and is nearing completion. “In the next financial year, we expect the construction of police stations in Okombahe and Omatjete,” said Katjiku. He further said a multipurpose cultural centre is also nearing completion in Omatjete and will be handed over soon. NAMPA

First Arrestor Bed in Namibia officially opened Marshallino Beukes Another milestone in the development of Namibia's road network was reached on Friday, with the official opening of an Arrestor Bed outside Usakos, by the Minister of Works and Transport, Mr Alpheus !Naruseb. The arrestor bed, which is a traffic device enabling vehicles, especially trucks, with braking problems to stop safely, is situated at the western side of Usakos on the B2 road. This is the first of its kind in Namibia complimenting the Roads Authority' quest to promote road safety. In his keynote address, Minister !Naruseb noted that the arrestor bed was specifically constructed on this section of the B2 road, because it was identified as a traffic hazard, following several accidents which occurred involving brake failures of trucks. The brake failures are mostly caused by the approximately 10 degrees slope that descent gradually for about 20 kilometres en route from Swakopmund to Usakos. The arrestor bed was completed at the end of last year and has already yielded positive results, with a number of trucks successfully utilising it to avoid possible fatal traffic accidents, the Minister remarked. According to him, this is a clear indication that more road infrastructure of this nature is needed in other parts of the country as well. He urged the Roads Authority to do more road safety audits and recommend the construction of more arrestor beds, where required. This arrestor bed was constructed to the tune of N$12 million and Minister !Naruseb commended the Road Fund Administration Fund for availing the funds. Roads Authority, Lithon Project Consultants (Pty) Ltd and the contractor, OTESA Civil Engineering (Pty) Ltd was also applauded for the successful completion of the project. !Naruseb furthermore expressed his concern regarding the alarming carnage on the country's roads, especially on the B2 highway. He urged all road users, especially heavy vehicle operators, to use this new infrastructure optimally to avoid accidents. At the same occasion, Erongo Governor Cleophas Mutjavikua, noted that roads in the Erongo Region are the busiest in the country and a lack of major rehabilitation of these roads is being experienced since independence. He especially mentioned the road between Walvis Bay and the different mines in the region, where heavy duty vehicles are transporting goods on a daily basis to and from the mines. He also expressed his gratitude towards Roads Authority on this important component for road safety for the Region. The Chief Executive Officer of Roads Authority, Mr Conrad Lutombi, commented that a number of major road projects are lined up for the Erongo Region, with one of them the much anticipated dual carriage way between Swakopmund and Walvis Bay. According to him they are in the final stages of getting this project of the ground.

Alleged drug dealer arrested Madelaine Laubscher
The Swakopmund Neighbourhood Watch, in collaboration with the First Response Reaction Unit and the Special Reserve Force, managed to sucessfully bring down an alleged drug dealer on Saturday night in Swakopmund after noticing a suspicious-looking vehicle that ultimately ended in a car chase and an arrest. According to a member of the Swakopmund Neighbourhood watch, they were about to search the car when it suddenly drove away. “We were on patrol, looking for another suspect, when we saw a suspicious-looking car. We walked around the car and at that stage, the driver of the car sped off resulting in a car chase. We managed to catch
the suspects and found a backpack full of dagga. The suspects have been arrested,” he said. Another member from the First Response Unit said, while being on patrol chasing suspects involved in an incident of theft at Rossmund, another member noticed a suspicious-looking vehicle. We told him to keep an eye on the vehicle. The
vehicle drove away without switching its headlights on. We approached the car and when the driver saw that we were approaching, he sped off. We chased after the car and we managed to get the driver to pull over. We brought Nampol onto the scene to search the vehicle. The driver and his girlfriend were arrested. The car was taken to

Maier murder suspect still on the run Yesterday, Zambezi Regional Police Commander Boniface Mukendwa told Nampa investigations are at a critical stage. He said police officers are still searching for the suspect, who is on the run with his unidentified wife. Mukendwa added that the money and laptop stolen from Maier and his girlfriend have also not yet been recovered. “I cannot really divulge information at this stage of the investigation. All I can say is that investigations
into the matter are progressing well and I believe an arrest is imminent,” he said. The couple were attacked while camping in the bush at Lianshulu. The couple were asleep when two men wearing balaclavas and armed with knives tore open their tent and kidnapped them between 01:30 and 02:00. The robbers tied them up and ordered them into their vehicle, which later got stuck in the bush, after which the men started

searching the vehicle and found cash and other items. Before escaping on foot, one of the robbers pulled the woman from the vehicle in an attempt to rape her, but Maier managed to free himself and defended her, and in the process a fight ensued between the men. During the fight, Maier was stabbed five times in the stomach, chest and back and when the robbers saw he was getting weak, they ran off. The woman only managed to find help after 06:00,
when she walked into a camp of the Namibian Special Field Force in the area. Three men – Walter Lwendo Lupalezwi, 34; Ndozi Ndozi, 21; and Harris Sijiwa, 29 – have since appeared before Magistrate Karl Muyeghu in Katima Mulilo, on two counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances, indecent exposure, kidnapping and murder. Muyeghu remanded them in custody after postponing the matter to 19 October this year. NAMPA
These three men were arrested just a day after the murder of André Maier at Lianshulu village. The men are currently in the custody of NamPol at Katima Mulilo after they were denied bail last week.

Rural electrification reaches /Uikrens village The sleepy village of /Uikrens will soon experience development as the process of rural electrification, which will see the village connected to the national power grid, started here on Wednesday. /Uikrens is located in the Daures Constituency, about 30 kilometres north of Usakos in the Erongo Region. Constituency Councillor for Daures, Ehrnst Katjiku on Wednesday handed over the site to the contractor, Windhoek Consulting Engineers (WCE). This project will cost beyond N$2 million and is part of Government and the Erongo Regional Electricity Distributor's (RED) efforts in bringing electricity to the rural areas of Namibia. The contractor already started identifying beneficiaries before putting up connecting lines and installing electricity boxes to about 59 houses. Katjiku requested good cooperation between the community, the contractor and other stakeholders to ensure success of the project. “Employment priority should be given to the
local people and if it happens that people with special skills are to be taken from other areas, let us take from the nearby villages,” he instructed the contractor. Speaking to the residents, Katjiku said Government promised to bring electricity and this is proof that they are delivering. On his part, Cornelius Syfert of WCE ensured that locals will be employed first to do the job. He said a total of 20 people from the village will be given jobs and the project is expected to be completed by November this year when the houses will “light up.” Syfert has worked on other rural electrification projects in the Daures Constituency such as at Okombahe, Okongwe, Goas and Okamapuku. Last month, Erongo RED
connected 117 houses in Otjimbingwe to the national electricity grid. Public Relations Officer at Erongo RED, Benjamin Nangombe on Sunday said 26 houses and two water pumps were switched on at Okongava on Tuesday, while 44 houses are expected to be switched

Obtaining Fishing
Permits
Obtain a permit from the Namibian Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources (MFMR) to catch fish or dive for crayfish and respect harvesting limitations. WHY? The marine resources are limited and currently some of them are overfished or over collected. It is necessary that everybody uses them wisely and carefully to secure the future harvesting needs by protecting the stock. Quantity/number of marine resources harvestable, minimum size limits of fish and crayfish that can be caught, open season etc. help to manage stocks to avoid the total disappearance of some species in our waters. Do not leave bait or fish on the beach! Either take it home or return it to the sea. This food attracts scavengers like jackals and gulls that prey on other bio-diversity. When you are back home after the holiday, it also inflates the predator population. Where can you get a license for angling, crayfish diving & bait/mussels collection?

“We need to be more innovative’’ - Erongo Governor opens Namport Expo 2015 Leandrea Louw
The media launch for the 9th annual Namport Business and Tourism Expo 2015 was held at the Namport offices on Friday. Namport invested over N$1 million dollars in this event. Erongo Red has also pledged its contribution in the form of electricity for the duration of the Expo. Mr Bisey Uirab, CEO of the Namibia Ports Authority (NamPort) said at this occasion, the Erongo Region was on the rise. “We must come together to tell the world what we are capable of. We must become active participants in growing this country. We need to engage with Namibians, especially those from previously disadvantaged backgrounds, so that no one can feel left out. This expo needs to grow from strength to strength. We have to challenge those expos in Windhoek and Ongwediva. Let us try to be number one! The economic activity in this Region can make us number 1. Let us join hands and engage with other entities, for this Expo to become the best in the country.” In the keynote address Governor of the Erongo Region, Mr Cleophas Mutjivikua said the previous year he had emphasised the need to move away from the traditional way of doing things, and the need to come up with innovative ideas for the busi-
ness sector. “The people are looking forward to seeing new things and not to see these being manufactured in the Republic of China, but those being manufactured in Okambahe or Uis. Those features must be visible at events such as this, the people need to come and experience new things and sponsors should look towards investing in the manufacturing of these Namibian products. We should be more targeted in our approach to become an industrialised nation. ” He also mentioned, that stakeholders should look at selecting and sending 20 Namibians, for 6 months’ training to China or Thailand, to learn the manufacturing trade. “The world is moving very fast around us and we need to catch up, and move away from tradition. A knowledge-based economy is the way to go. Young people, who wish to see their names written in the history books, should look at innovation. We should look at training, devel-

However, to maintain a modern town, this can only be done by and with Namibian people that are employed. We cannot become heroes by creating a commotion; we cannot run this country in chaos. We must become a strong, stable and industrial country.” In his remarks, Mr Freddie Vries, acting CEO of Erongo Red, said by supporting the event they were creating a perfect platform, not only for our business people to interact and display their products, but also for them to discover and learn from other successful entrepreneurs. “Our people must start migrating from traditional business practices such as ‘shebeens and cuca shops’, and keep up with the technology by inventing cutting

“Deep-sea Mining Regulations Need Stronger Environmental Protections”
See the warning about “rushing to mine our deep seas before scientists fully understand these mysterious ecosystems or how to protect them” and that “this sort of large-scale industrial mining on our ocean floors is inherently destructive, so we need to do all we can to protect sea life from its impacts - Swakopmund Matters Deep-sea Mining Regulations Need Stronger Environmental Protections KINGSTON, Jamaica - Scientists and conservationists are calling on the International Seabed Authority, now meeting in Jamaica, to adopt stronger-than-proposed protections for wildlife and oceans in setting environmental standards for deep-sea mining projects. The Center for Biological Diversity, which recently sued the United States government for issuing deep-sea mining permits that circumvent the ISA’s nascent environmental review process, warns that the current push to start strip-mining the ocean floor could do irreparable damage to marine life. “Big corporations are rushing to mine our deep seas before scientists fully understand these mysterious ecosystems or how to protect them. We need to slow this process down and do whatever we can to shield them from the new gold rush,” said Miyoko Sakashita, oceans program director for the Center.
“And we don’t think the United States should be defying the international system and breaking its own environmental laws to permit deep-sea mining.” In May the Center sued the US government for issuing exploratory permits to a Lockheed Martin subsidiary for mining work in the Clarion-Clipperton Zone halfway between Mexico and Hawaii. That claim is independent of the ISA, which includes the 161 nations that have adopted the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. Also in May the Center submitted comments to the ISA on the development of its regulatory process, supporting proposals by the DeepOcean Stewardship Initiative to establish an independent review board and to broaden the ISA’s focus on individual projects to take into account regional and cumulative impacts. In addition the Center urged the ISA to improve its public noticing and comment procedures and to deny applications that involve significant environment
impacts. Meanwhile the Center for Ocean Solutions published a study in the July 9 issue of Science calling for the ISA to create marine-protected areas in international waters where mining would be banned, a proposal the Center also supports. “This sort of large-scale industrial mining on our ocean floors is inherently destructive, so we need to do all we can to protect sea life from its impacts,” Sakashita said. The deep ocean is believed to contain billions of dollars worth of nickel, copper, cobalt, manganese, zinc, gold and other rare-earth metals and minerals. Extracting those materials has been considered too expensive, difficult and risky for investors in the past, but technological advances and skyrocketing prices for these materials have led to a strong push by the mining industry. The ISA has issued 26 exploratory mining permits in international waters, and another project permitted by Papua New Guinea in its territorial waters, Solwara I, could soon become an active commercial

It’s basically about knowledge in detail (education), and positive development. The government understands what we are going through and there is no need for a rush. Independence was not gained in 9 months, my fellow Namibians. We have a new government in place with excellent policies that were implemented in this past few days. You will not understand what peace and stability is if you were not present when our leaders were fighting for our countries or if you don’t really see and understand what other countries are going through right now. It is people’s lives that we are talking about. The only way forward for us is to give time to our leaders and respect them, they fought for us to be free and now what they say is for us (the youth) to get education, not in the fields of studies were there is a large number of labor force.
We also need to decrease and eliminate the creation of informal settlements and concentrate on rural industrialisation. Let’s not fight for another Katutura but another Klein Kuppa. My fellow young Namibian leaders I cannot believe that we are fighting for land that the government is busy solving already while we are importing everything these days. When you wake up in the morning it’s all imported starting from Televisions, the mobile phones we use. Our youth also need lectures on how to spend money wisely. We (the youth) should give time to the new government. Like His Excellency Dr. Hage G Geingob our President is saying let’s paint the house and move in. The house was already build and stabilised by our former leaders. It’s time that young people stand up an gain education (from higher learning institutions) and ask the government to decrease
the fees and open more vocational training centers, provide accommodation at reasonable prices so that all Namibians can be able to afford it, I mean education in needed fields so that we don’t import skilled labor in our mother land e.g. Accountants, Electrical engineers, doctors you name them. As young youth activist -that’s my view for a positive economic growth. This is also why we the concerned youth activists started our movement to say; let’s not illegally occupy land but acquire knowledge. If you understand our point of view on this you are free to join our movement. For more information you can like our facebook page; Let’s not illegally occupy land but acquire knowledge. Also this is realy a big inconvinience for us that are working. I have an upcoming paper but cant study because of is at least if u give us fair warnings we

Three People and a Pride of Lions Documentary about Namibia’s Desert Lions Inspires Maria Davel-Wallis When Will and Lianne Steenkamp saw how many people have come to watch their documentary about the Desert Lions of Namibia, they were overwhelmed. Many who came to see the film, eventually had to go home empty-handed, because the event was sold out. pride of desert lions is nothing like anything they’ve done before. “We have made several films on lions and other big cats, but the home range of a desert lion is enormous, meaning we travelled extensively in trying to follow the lions. They walk great distances. In one night our pride could walk between 20 and 30 kilometres. So it was a great challenge keeping up and finding them again. Without the invaluable research done by the Desert Lion Project we would have never been able to follow a pride so closely. We would spend more time searching than actually filming them...” For Lianne and Will another challenge was that the desert terrain is extremely sensitive, meaning making new tracks could scar the landscape for decades. “So there were many days where we would see our pride walk off across these beautiful gravel plains where it was not possible to follow, and then not being able to be with them for weeks on end. Our aim was to keep our impact as minimal as possible. Our respect for the landscape played a major role in that. Our Landcruiser was our home and we had a rooftop tent to sleep in. We lived a wonderful, simple life as nomads, setting up camp in a different place every night. That was an amazing experience, a sense of freedom you can hardly ever experience anywhere else. It allowed us to stay closer to the lions and brought us wonderful filming moments we wouldn’t have had if we had lived from a permanent base. The majority of our filming took place in and around the Hoanib Valley, the home of our lion pride.” The film music has its ori-
gin in Austria, Lianne says, “We did our postproduction in Vienna, Austria, where we worked together with Roman Kariolou, a very talented music composer. From the start we knew this film deserved a great music score, and we wanted specific themes for each of our characters. Roman was able to make our images and characters come alive even more with his phenomenal work. The old lioness has her own theme, as well as the adult male and the five Musketeers.” Their journey with Dr Philip Stander has been a very special one “When we met Philip we realized he was no ordinary scientist. This man has dedicated his entire life to studying these desert lions. 20 years of intensive research in the field has resulted in the extensive knowledge we have on desert-adapted lions today. Thanks to Philip’s research we can address human-lion conflict much more effectively and show tourists from all over the world these elusive predators. And with it we can conserve this national treasure for Namibia. For us as wildlife filmmakers it is extremely valuable to work together with a scientist. The help and guidance we received from Philip was important and contributed greatly to the end result of the film. It is a true and factual story, authentic in every way, with a solid base of science behind it. It has given our film the credibility it deserves. We believe no wildlife film should be made without sound scientific information. Science communication plays a vital role in bridging the gap between nature and people.” So, where to now with their film… “We co-produced this film with three main broadcast partners, namely ORF in Austria, Smithso-
The Film makers speaking to members of the audience
nian Channel in the United States and ARTE in France/Germany. ORF will premiere the film on television in Austria on the 15th September. Thereafter it will be shown in the other countries. National Geographic International has recently come on board and will bring the film to the rest of the world. But most importantly, the film will be made available free of charge to the broadcast channels in Namibia.” On a question about their personal journey the last two years, and what the experience meant to them, and lead them, she said, “Imagine a lion walking across an endless gravel plain. Imagine it hunting in the dunes. Imagine it roaming the coast. Seeing the ghostlike figure of a predator in the thick fog. Seeing it vanish in the relentless sand storms… No words can describe what we experienced over the last two years. Living in the wild with such a remarkable pride of lions who shared with us their hardships and triumphs, was a life changing experience. At first we were just hoping to capture this iconic species in the desert landscape. That alone would have been fantastic, for they are secretive, elusive animals, and very hard to follow intimately. But over time this pride allowed us inside their world, and enabled us to make an in-depth behavioural film on how lions survive in this ancient desert. It was more than we could have ever hoped for. Being able to document such an intimate story will hopefully help in the conservation of this unique kind of lion. Bringing this film to the world will hopefully contribute to the tourism in Namibia. And bringing this film to the people of Namibia itself is vital in that

It was a privilege to be part of the crowd Saturday, and to get a glimpse into the very private lives of the lions. But who are these two young filmmakers, and how the film come about… Lianne explains: “Will and I are wildlife filmmakers and we specialise in behavioural, bluechip wildlife films. About eight years ago Will met Dr Philip Stander in the desert during another production. He was intrigued by the extensive research Philip had been doing on the desert-adapted lions and everything he had come to know about how they survive in this relentless desert. Ever since, we always hoped to return one day and make a film about the desert-adapted lions of Namibia. Several years ago, when one of the prides had given birth to a cohort of 5 male cubs, which is a unique situation, it seemed to be the right time to start making a film. Philip provided us with all the important data and guidance when we started following the '5 Musketeers' at one-and-a-half years old. And that was the beginning of an extraordinary coming of age story.” She says they knew the Desert Lion Project receives a lot of support from people in Swakopmund, so they expected there was going to be interest in the film. “However, we were overwhelmed by the number of people that came to the screening. None of us ever expected that... It is a sign that Namibians really care for their own wildlife and extraordinary environment, that they are passionate about the desert lions, and that they support valuable conservation initiatives. So for us it was a great privilege to be able to show them this film.” Lianne says following a
(Fltr) Will and Lianne Steenkamp with Dr Philip Stander we need to raise awareness, instill an appreciation for this remarkable animal, that only lives here, in your country... Desert lions are found nowhere else in the world. It is something Namibians can be very proud of and they should treasure it.” Lianne and Will on Sunday went on a very special mission. “Now that we have shown the film in Windhoek and Swakopmund, we will take it on a roadshow to some of the local villages in the desert. Our
The Five Musketeers
mobile cinema will screen the film in Wêreld's End, Bergsig, Sesfontein and Purros. The lion is a flagship species for Namibia, a national treasure. It plays a valuable role for the tourism industry. However, the villages in the desert have to bear the costs of living with these lions. Human-lion conflict is an inevitable challenge, one that has no easy solution. We would like to show the film to these people, and especially to the
young generation. Most of the children have never seen a lion, but they share the same land and they go through the same hardships in the desert. Hopefully they will take pride in having such a special kind of lion. Hopefully we can show them how valuable and precious their conservancies are, which allows the wild animals to thrive there, and that they can become part of the beautiful wildlife stories that unfold here.”

Talented Nepolo wins Gold at Science Fair Mavourlene !Gaes Outspoken and extremely talented 19-year-old Nepolo Silvanus from Kuisebmond Secondary School has proven there is a fine line between science and fashion, when he won a gold medal at the Regional Science Fair last week Thursday, with a dress and handbag he made, using sweets wrappings.
Nepolo poses with his certificate and his gold medal around his neck
By the time his friends returned from Windhoek, Nepolo had already made up his mind that he was going to enter into the environmental category and also about what project he was going to enter with. “I started collecting sweets wrappings and recycled about 3 000 wrappings with the help of my fellow classmates”. This year Nepolo approached his Biology teacher and told him that he wanted to participate in this year’s fair. The Biology teacher informed him he was going to let him know as soon as he received a notification from the Regional office. “When he got the notification, he informed us about the Science Fair and requested us to give in our topics.” The talented designer admits that he felt his topic was not scientific enough, and he lacked confidence, and feared that his topic would not be chosen. Sigmar Gabriel visits the “Hidden Champion” BAADER in Lübeck
The Federal Minister of Economy, Mr Sigmar Gabriel, visited a “Hidden Champion” in Lübeck - the company BAADER - on 25.06.2015. BAADER belongs to the “Hidden Champions”, the company is by far the leading supplier of fish processing plants and holds a world market share of 80 %. the course of focusing on one market segment BAADER has partitioned the food industry market even further. One of the main pillars is the fish processing industry, here BAADER is the “niche king no. 1”. Meanwhile BAADER also belongs to the international top sellers in the poultry industry. BAADER´s product line encompasses today five relevant food domains: Besides fish, meat, fruit / vegetable and unpacking BAADER also invests in the program of poultry processing machinery and

plants and thereby into a promising market. After a company tour through the BAADER museum and the production area Mr Gabriel could be convinced by the performance ability of a herring processing line, which can process up to 400 fish 7 min. In between there was always time for personal talks with the employees. After the company tour Sigmar Gabriel was impressed by the conversations with the employees as well as the company which already exists since 95 years and has grown continually and perpetuates to do so: The company BAADER is a good example why special machine engineering “Made in Germany” enjoys an excellent reputation - not only in Germany but also worldwide. It is obvious that for a sustainable quality management specialised personnel and good training concepts on site are indispensable. Today´s apprentices are the specialists of tomorrow - if they are missing in the dual vocational training, the will be missed
later in the companies. The company has recognised this situation and I welcome the commitment to the special industrial training. This is accepted responsibility.” Another core theme for the Federal Minister and the company BAADER is the subject digitisation in the food industry. An example for the successful implementation of the first Industry 4.0 Projects Mr Gabriel experienced with the BAADER process chain: Wi t h B A A D E R t h e customer receives from the receipt of the goods through the dispatch of the products an unbroken traceability and product control through intermachine-communication, cross-platform visualisation and reporting. In this manner the company conduces to the processing industry, with a significant contribution to the optimisation of food hygiene, processing speed, yield increase and freshness. With this the company BAADER also approaches the world´s priority themes of food.

Nadine talks about arc eyes Arc eyes, also called photokeratitis, welder's flash or flash burn occur when the eye is exposed to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. This commonly occurs when welders weld without the appropriate eye protection. People that are in the surroundings of a welding project are also at risk of developing arc eyes, as focussing on the welders arc for just a brief moment can cause a corneal burn. The ultraviolet damages the outer clear layer of the eye, known as the cornea. Flash burn is similar to sun-burn on the skin. When the burns aren't severe, the pain will subside within a few days with the appropriate treatment. More severe injuries should be assessed by a doctor. Arc eyes can also be caused by numerous other sources of UV light like sun tanning beds, halogen desk lamps, photographic flood lamps, electric sparks, carbon sparks and lightning. Excessive periods of exposure to sunlight
reflecting off of water or snow can also lead to corneal burns. Symptoms of arc eyes include: Painful eyes, blurry vision, light sensitivity, watery eyes, red eyes, sensation of having something in your eye, irritation, difficulty keeping your eye open and associated skin burns from ultraviolet exposure. Usually both eyes are affected. Symptoms depend on the duration of the exposure; the type of eye protection used, the distance from the welder's arc, the angle at which the radiation enters the eye as well as the intensity of the ultraviolet source. A delay between ultraviolet exposures and onset of symptoms is common and symptoms can take up to 6-12 hours to present. Treatment include cold compress, sunglasses for light
sensitivity, resting with eyes closed, tear supplements, cycloplegic eye drops (drops that dilate the pupil), antibiotics, oral analgesic for pain relief and patching the eye. Myths about arc eyes include flushing the eye out with milk. The milk provides an analgesic affect due to it being cool (assuming the milk is kept in the fridge). Milk contains bacteria that should not come close to the eye. Another myth is that normal spectacles would protect you from getting arc eyes. Normal spectacles don't have the appropriate ultraviolet absorber filter that a welding helmet has. Spectacles don't cover your entire face as a welder's helmet does putting you at risk of getting sunburn on your face.

Namibia’s Best Boerewors are fighting it out The regional round of the 2015 Shoprite and Checkers Namibian Champion Boerewors Competition kicks off at 8 o'clock on Saturday, 8 August at Affies Park at the Wanderers Sport Grounds and promises to be an exciting day for everyone present – competitors and spectators alike. While all the best boerewors makers in the country has again been rallied to enter this year's Shoprite and Checkers Namibian Champion Boerewors Competition, currently all boerewors lovers are turning their eyes to the elimination round of the competition. At this time the organisers and the NCA judges are gearing up to see the best boerewors legends in the country compete against each other for a place on the national boerewors throne. The qualification round consists of a process whereby every competitor presents their raw and braaied homemade boerewors to the judges, nine of the most respected food experts from the Namibian Chefs Association. The judges will measure each boerewors against the other competing entries on various points, including its meat content and the use of spices, the texture of the sausage and what it tastes like, raw and braaied. After careful consideration, the best are chosen. Along with the excitement of the actual boerewors judging, Shoprite and Checkers also went out of their way to ensure that everyone can have a great time with a DJ and music to entertain the crowd, a mechanical bull for all the boerie-brave, jumping castles for all the little legends and a beer tent to ensure that every spectator can enjoy a cold drink and a few boerewors rolls during the competition. To top it all of, later in the afternoon, while the smell of boerewors still lingers over Pioneers Park, the judges will announce the 10 finalists that will compete at the Hart van Windhoek music festival in September. The winner of this final round will be crowned as the best boerewors maker in Namibia and drive away in a brand new Toyota Hilux bakkie, while their recipe will be used by Shoprite and Checkers during next year as the recipe for the group's Namibian Champion Boerewors, available countrywide.
Note: The Shoprite and Checkers Namibian Champion Boerewors Competition was established in 2009 and takes place between March and July of every year. The competition was started to create a chance for boerewors makers throughout Namibia to measure their recipes against the best of the best. The competition is currently in its 7th year and has again managed to attract a record amount of entries. The final winning recipe will be announced at the Hart van Windhoek music festival. The competition webpage can be visited at www.namibianchampionboerewors.com. Enquiries: Rozanne van der Merwe Tel: 061 247 371 061 247 371

New Ambulance for Coastal rescues
21 JULY 2015
Liesl Losper
LifeLink Emergency Rescue Services has commissioned an additional ambulance for it’s fleet to be based at the Walvis Bay station recently. This vehicle has been allocated to ensure that it is suitable for the varying road conditions along the coast. The ambulance is fully equipped and crewed by properly qualified staff who will provide emergency care and assistance in all emergency cases as well as transferring patients between hospitals and towns. LifeLink has been operational at the coast since December 2012 and specifically in Walvis Bay since January 2014.” The coastal operation has also been set up with boats and helicopters available to provide assistance to ships at sea as well as the normal operations on land. LifeLink has
already done some very challenging work for patients at sea, including a Fisheries officer who was lifted off a ship in a critical condition at Terrace Bay and a cruise ship passenger who was lifted from a vessel out to sea in the middle of the night when she became gravely ill. LifeLink is an increasingly busy service and has assisted over 4 000 patients since it's inception.” Brian Louw, Managing Director and Chief Ambulance Officer commented. Furthermore, LifeLink operations are set to expand further this year with the addition of more ambulance stations in strategic locations.

Red Namibia RWC Jersey : Explanation
NRU Media Services say they’ve had a few enquiries with regard to the colours of the official Namibian jersey for the Rugby World Cup. They explain that Namibia’s primary (home) jersey is the blue one in which the team is likely to play most of its matches at the Rugby World Cup. Usually Namibia’s secondary( away) jersey is
white, but for the Rugby World Cup it will be red for the following reasons: * The hosts, England’s, primary jersey is white and because they are the host nation none of the other countries are
allowed to have white jerseys unless the colour white is also that country’s jersey's primary colour. So, if Namibia’s primary (home) jersey was white, they would have been able to have played
in a white jersey. As it is blue, the NRU and several other countries were requested by Rugby World Cup NOT to have white playing jerseys, as it could potentially clash with the host country.
