Volgens beskikbare inligting het Burger die afgelope tyd met hartgesondheid gesukkel. Hy is Sondag in die hospitaal op Walvisbaai opgeneem en Maandag per ambulans na die Katutura staats-hospitaal afgevoer. Hy is binne enkele ure na sy opname oorlede.

Mnr André Visser het gister telefonies gesê Burger se dood laat 'n diep leemte. Visser het Burger beskryf as a deeglike en hardwerkende mens. Burger was deurlopend professioneel en hoflik, al sou hy as balju soms onder geweldige emosionele druk werk.

The Erongo Desalination Plant (EDP) reached the 50 million cubic metres of desalinated water produced on 10 November this year.

What makes this achievement so much more important and pacesetting is the fact that it has been achieved with not a single lost time injury (lti).

The plant which started operating in 2010 is owned by Orano Mining Namibia which is also the owner of the Orano uranium mine (former Trekkopje Mine). The desalination plant is managed by Nafasi Water (formerly known as Aveng Water) and today supplies an estimated 75 % of Swakopmund and the uranium mining industry's fresh water supply.

The plant is situated 35 kilometres north of Swakopmund near Wlotzkasbaken.

EDP is the largest reverse osmosis desalination plant in Southern Africa and has a capacity to produce 20 million cubic metres of desalinated water per annum, with ample capacity to increase desalinated water production to 26 million cubic metres per annum. In fact, there is also scope to enlarge the plant's capacity to 45 million cubic metres of water by constructing an extension which is already part of the original design.

The desalination plant was originally constructed to supply the Trekkopje (now Orano) uranium mine with water. Desalination is accepted as the one and only alternative if Namibia's fresh water supply is to keep ahead of both human and industrial demand. Passenger dies aboard Queen Elizabeth liner A 74-year-old man collapsed and died aboard the Queen Elizabeth passenger liner alongside in the port of Walvis Bay at the passenger liner terminal on Sunday morning. The elderly passenger, identified as Mr Brian Morris-Ashton, reportedly complained of headaches shortly before he collapsed.

The Namibian Police was attended to the incident. Mr. Morris-Ashton was declared dead on the ship. His body was removed from the ship. The mortal remains is to be repatriated to his home country.

In the meantime, the Namibian Police identified the Chinese national who was killed in a parachute accident in Swakopmund over the weekend as 33-year old Ran Lei. The accident is believed to have been caused when Lei's parachute's ropes became entangled and that incapacitated her parachute's system to deploy the emergency chute.

In a third incident involving foreigners, the Namibian Police is probing an incident where two South African tourists were allegedly attacked in their camp vehicle at a camp site at Henties Bay earlier this week. Sources close to the investigation yesterday explained the investigation could take some times, as there are many undeclared aspects at this moment which leave more questions than answers.

The 50 million cubic metres achievement was celebrated earlier this week at the EDP's site where the Managing Director of Orano Mining Namibia, Hilifa Mbako, expressed pride in the fact that the plant is operating since 2010 with no injuries which resulted in lost production time. Mbako is a seasoned mining industry leader with a career spanning several decades.

“The EDP has an impressive safety record. Nine years of continuous operation without a single loss time injury. Similarly, its environmental management system adheres to the highest standards, as confirmed by ongoing impact testing around the operating site by independence third parties”.

Mbako further confirmed the EDP is already fulfilling a critical role in water provision for the Erongo region. With the uranium industry showing signs of an eventual market recovery, the industry needs a sustainable and reliable water resource in the future.

Said Mbako: “The availability of water, through a desalination plant or plants has the ability to unlock enormous potential from industry to agriculture. We are prepared and ready to play an even bigger part in finding an overall solution that will ensure the most reliable and cost-effective water supply to the local industry, mines and populations”.

ACC confirms investigation of former Fisheries Minister Esau ACC warns public against impersonators of ACC officials The attention of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has been drawn to the brazen impersonation of officials of the Commission by unknown person(s).

On several occasions, impersonators via the Short Message Services (SMS'es) send this text message to random people claiming to be officials of the Commission. "I am calling But No Response Thanks from Detective Chief Inspector Mali from ACC Commissioner the Second head". The scammers further send the victim(s) full name and ask them to confirm their identity. As for some people, the scammers ask the victim(s) to provide cell phone numbers of other individuals.

These text messages are fraudulent which intent to mislead another into believing that the impersonator is actually an Officer of the AntiCorruption Commission. Therefore, those sending these text messages are scammers and are not legitimate employees of the Commission. The Commission wishes it to be known that such is not the operation of the Commission, particularly its investigators. The Commission's officials will always positively identify themselves as per the Anti-Corruption Act, 2003 (Act No.8 of 2003) when executing their mandate.

The Commission rigorously condemn this action and wish to caution the public that, Impersonating an Officer of the Anti-Corruption Commission, is contrary to section 29 (1) (g) of the Anti-Corruption Act, 2003 and is a punishable offence. Any person(s) engaged, or intending to engage, in the impersonating of ACC staff / officer are further warned to desist forthwith, or face the full penalty of the law.

Meanwhile, members of the Public are therefore advised that whenever they receive text messages from any individual claiming to be working for the Commission, to always contact the Commission or visit the our nearest Office to confirm the official's identity.

The ACC wishes to further assure the Namibian people and stakeholders of its relentless commitment to fight against corruption.

The Anti-Corruption of Namibia (ACC) through its Director Mr. Paulus Noa said this week the Commission is investigating the international fishing quota scandal which among others led to the resignation of Fisheries Minister Bernard Esau and the Namibian justice Minister, Sacky Shangala.

In the statement it is said the ACC has opened a docket as far back as 2014 and the investigation also focuses on allegations fish quotas were dished out to non-quota holders.

The full extract of the statement reads: “On Wednesday, 17 September 2014 [it should actually read 2019 – Editor Namib Times], The Namibian newspaper carried a front page article titled "Esau relative chairs Fishcor". The allegations in the article were briefly that the Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources ignored regulations when he handpicked a relative to head the board of a State-Owned company, which he gave a 10 000 metric tons fishing quotas in contravention of the law. Based on the article, ACC initiated an investigation into the allegation.

Meanwhile complaints were also received alleging that the Minister allocated fishing quotas to non-right holders. The information gathered at that time, could not justify submission of the docket to the Prosecutor-General for a decision to prosecute.

The allegations potentially implicating the Minister Bernard Esau, Minister Sacky Shangala, James Hatuikulipi, Fitly Tamson Hatuikulipi, Ricardo Gustavo, several fishing entities, some

foreign nationals and their companies were only received by ACC during November 2018. These allegations are being investigated as part of the docket already opened in 2014.

Since then, ACC has been relentlessly pursuing the allegations with an objective to get substantive evidence. Statement under oath have been obtained from the whistle blower and other potential witnesses. In the course of the investigation, ACC has engaged counterparts and relevant stakeholders inside and outside the country with an objective to assist with investigation of various aspects as revealed by our sources. The reason for requesting international cooperation from our counterparts is to consolidate the investigation. The cooperation will as well ensure speedy finalization of the investigation.

This is a complex cross-border investigation and all documents and alleged financial transactions need to be verified before the docket is submitted to PG for a decision.

The docket is receiving urgent and appropriate investigation, at the same time ACC is established by law and investigations must be conducted in accordance with the law.”

Red carpet for “The Queen” Statement, Namport: In the early morning hours of 17 November the Queen Elizabeth passenger vessel docked at the passenger terminal of the Namibian Ports Authority. The vessel that was carrying 1915 passengers and 998 crew members came from Santa Cruz de Tenerife and made a 9 hour stop at the Port of Walvis Bay, giving the passengers a chance to disembark the vessel and visit local tourist attractive places in and around Walvis Bay. The nine year old vessel is sailing under the flag of Bermuda and is heading to the port of Cape Town in South Africa.

The amount of passenger liners received at the Namibian Ports Authority have increased significantly over the past three financial reporting periods respectively as follows: 27 liners, 31 liners, 33 liners.

So far the entity has hosted 11 cruise liners in its current financial year and is thrilled to report that the frequency of passenger vessels visits have increased considerably since the commissioning of the dedicated passenger liner in August 2019. The Ports Authority looks forward to the arrival of 7 cruise liners during the month of January 2020 amounting to 10,000 visitors during this period.

A tragedy in wait.....

A motorist approached the pedestrian crossing in Nangolo Mbumba Drive at the Walvis Bay Primary School at such a high speed on Tuesday morning that he/she had to apply brakes to avoid hitting school children crossing the street at the time. “We just heard screams and the screech of the tyres. I was paralysed with fear, as I thought the vehicle ploughed into the group of children”, a very concerned resident of the area told Namib Times on Tuesday. Adding: “this is a tragedy in wait, as something needs to be done to prevent drivers from approaching the crossing at high speed”.

Salt exports to hit 107 000 tons in days

Tens of thousands of tons of salt, produced at the Walvis Bay salt pans, are leaving Namibia’s shores soon through the port of Walvis Bay. A total of 107 000 metric tons of bulk salt will be exported over the course of the next week and a further 8 000 tons of bagged salt.

The bulk carrier African Hornbill docked yesterday (Thursday 21 November) to take on 45 000 metric tons and is followed tomorrow by the bulk carrier Bold Voyager to load 40 000 metric tons. Bold Voyager encountered a break-down on its deck cranes and will also undergo repairs in the period the salt is loaded. On Sunday the bulk carrier Vectis Isle docks to offload railway tracks and thereafter loads 8 000 metric tons of bagged salt.

On 1 December the bulker Ken Orchid calls at port to load 22 000 metric tons of bulk salt.

A group of fourteen old scholars of De Duine Secondary School, the Class of 1997, got together to make a difference by ploughing back into the two local schools in Narraville, Walvis Bay. Snyders and Odele Simpson Muller recently handed over 15 boxes of tiles to the value of N$5 000 to the Narraville Primary School.

The tiles will be laid in the girls' bathroom.

Grant Knowles, a member of the group, donated a pull-up banner with school's vision, mission and school anthem printed on it.

Burchill Sitzer said on behalf of the group that the schools were fundamental in their upbringing and that the teachers not only taught them the various subjects, but also instilled life-long lessons and values.

The motto of Narraville

Primary School is 'Bou en Behou' and the team would want to keep on building.

The principal of Narraville Primary School Ms Cecilia Nakashole expressed her gratitude towards the group and said she hoped the school and the old scholars could foster a long-term relationship.

At De Duine Secondary School the group donated N$12 000 to De Duine Secondary School for the sign at the new main entrance with Grant Knowles also handed a pull-up banner to the school.

An der Atlantikküste,in der Namibwüste Die Rooibank-Kirche feiert 2020 ihr 50. Jubiläum Swakopmund (sk) Als die alte Kirche in Rooibank 1895 eingestürzt war, ließ Missionar Böhm sie neu errichten. Sie diente dann auch als Schule. Petrus Cloete hielt dort für 30 Kinder Unterricht..

Missionar Johann Böhm pflanzte die Dattelpalmen auf Rooibank und legte einen prächtigen Garten an. In der Weinlaube lernte Missionar Heinrich Vedder 1904 die Grundbegriffe der Namasprache.

Die Kirche stand noch bis 1953. Das Dach war schon eingefallen. Bauarbeiter und Besucher gebrauchten die Überreste als Brennholz.

So hatte auch diese Kirche keinen Bestand. Auf einem Foto von 1927 zeigt sich die Holzkirche noch in gutem Zustand.

Sages National Competition for charity Rossmund Golf Club hosted a very well attended Sages National Competition with some of the South African Sages players participating.

The Sages competition is an annual event and each year, there is a drive to collect money for charity. This year it was decided that the funds collected by each Sage branch would receive their portion of donations to hand over to a charity of their choice, in their town.

Swakopmund raised N$5 000 and the beneficiary chosen was the TEARS of HOPE home in Mondesa.

Representatives from Sages, including the

President of Namibia Sages, visited the home with one of the Executive members of the Governing Body of the home, Sandi van der Ploeg.

The children were thrilled with the cake Sandi brought them as a treat and management were extremely thankful and grateful for the donations.

Thank you to all the Sages who bought raffle tickets. Tears of Hope home is a worthy charity to support.

Rugby training squad named Rudi Bowe

The newly elected caretaker national rugby coach Johan Diergaardt has named a trading squad of 46 local-based players to start with preparations for the 2020 rugby season.

The players started their weekly training sessions that will run until 13 December where after they will go on a short break for the Christmas holidays with training to commence again on 13 January 2020. The Namibia Rugby Union is still waiting to hear whether the Welwitchias will compete in the SuperSport Challenge.

Second Old School 3x3 Basketball Rudi Bowe tournament Walvis Bay Whales Basketball Club will host the second edition of the Old School 3x3 basketball tournament on 30 November 2019 at the Venita Sports grounds in Swakopmund.

The tournament is for all the veteran Basket Ball players who played from 1990 who played for Walvis Bay Whales, Kings, Civics Suns, Mistakes, Tomahawks, Running Rebels, Dukes, UNAM Bladez, Internationals, Polly Blues, Street House Temptation and Swakopmund Hornets.

The tournament is also open for all the Basket Ball players and teams of 6 players older than 35 years and invited players from South Africa, Angola and Zimbabwe as well as a category for teams of 4 to 6 players between 20 to 34 years.

The community is invited to join the players in this fun filled event to create support and awareness of 3x3 Basketball in the country.

The annual Shotokan Karate Academy International (SKAI) Swakopmund prize giving ceremony was held on 14 November 2019.

During this year, karateka from this dojo excelled in all possible directions. Were it from kiddies to adults, on National and International level, these dojos are growing and are proud of every student who train hard and practice the art and sport of karate.

On National level this dojo attended the NAKU National trials in February this year, and competed in the SKAI Swakop Open tournament in April. In July, Windhoek was host to the SKAI National Championships and in October Walvis Bay was host to the SKAI Developmement Tournament. The NAKU National Championships also took place in September.

On International level, Suzelle Pronk participated at the WKF Beach Games in Ivory Coast and athletes from this dojo also participated in the Region 5 championship during May. Four athletes (Suzelle Pronk, Mayvonne Swart, René Giliomee & Jan-Magiel Leff) participated at UFAK in Botswana in July and during August, Suzelle participated at the Africa Games in Morrocco.

On 30 November, five students (Maiko van der Bijl, Adelinde Lang, Lené Mans, René Giliomee, Mayvonne Swart) will attempt their Nidan grading and two students (Jan-Magiel Leff and Lee Thomas) will attempt their Jnr Nidan grading. Suzelle will be competing in Spain during this time and in December; Jan-Magiel will compete at the Youth League in Italy.

2019 was thus a busy year for this dojo and karate is their passion. During 2020 the year will be kicked off on Wednesady 15 January 2020 at 17:30 at the Swakopmund/Tamariskia Town Hall for registrations and start of the new trimester. In February the UFAK Championships will be taking place in Morocco and then it is off to another busy year for karate.

What a good turnout of 39 players for the ALLES LOOP REG TOYOTA Golf day last weekend.

Dewald Els who also played the day was at hand to present the prizes to the winners, thanks Dewald, but I did not see your score on the board, maybe as sponsor you were not able to win a prize.

Winning the day on a count out was Danie van Antwerpen on 40 points, obviously the tour to Cape Town worked wonders for your game Danie. Losing the count out was Estelle Bothma. 39 seemed to be a good number on the day, as there were five players tied on 39 points, and so it went to the count out to see who ended where.

Koot Potgieter was 3rd, Johnny Borges was 4th, Piet van Niekerk was 5th, Jakkie de Witt was 6th and the 7th prize went to Chris Bothma. The jackpot was not won and there were five 2 clubs, Wayne Hart, Vilho Hanghome [nice to have you back Vihlo], Johnny Borges, Wynand Moller and Nardo Sardinha. Dewald said that they will be back next year.

This coming weekend is the popular Winners Of Winners and then also the winner of losers, sponsored by IT Guru. Today Friday, 22 is the Meersig NGK fund raiser.

For the old ballies this is early warning that the Walvis Bay leg of the SAGES will be played on 13 and 14 December.

Wouter van Wijk has again circulated the Air Namibia Race To Cape Town leader board. There is one round left and still 12 players in the mix, before the cut is made to the last four who will fight it out on the Namib Mills day on 30 Nov. Thanks to Air Namibia for the sponsorship. If I was a betting I would bet that the winner will come out of the top 5 on the leader board, just too much to do for the rest, but then again I am not a betting man haha, so let us wait and see, but for sure Jason won't win.

The Jolly Joker is still roaming free and evades capture. Nardo Sardinha had the chance to win but brother John drew the jack of diamonds to ensure that the pool climbs again and will open next week at 31 300. There will be a few changes to the start of the next pool once this one has been won and these will be communicated this Friday.

De Duine honours Sport stars Rudi Bowe

De Duine Secondary School in Narraville Walvis Bay honoured their sport achievers at the annual sports award ceremony at the school.

At De Duine the learners are known for their good Academics as well as their sport performance and the school has a proud record in both areas. The Education system has become very result driven and more emphasis is put an academics and less on sports and culture. The management and staff of De Duine still believe that “a Healthy body equals a Healthy mind”.

Darts player Mary Samuels represented the country at under 16 level at the Region 5 Dart Championships in Walvis Bay where she won a bronze medal in the team event and bronze in the singles event and a nominee for the Junior Sportswoman of the Year at the Namibia Sport Awards was the winner of the Junior Sportswoman of the year with under 16 rugby player Franco Vries who represented his school and country at under 16 Grant Como rugby week in South Africa the Junior Sportsman of the year.

Courtney Mouton received national colours in Judo is a winner of several gold medals at National and International Judo championships and best female Juduka in Namibia was named Senior

Sportswoman of the year with Timothy Coleman received Namibian colours for Karate and is the 3rd best in Africa in his category represented the country at the UFAK Junior and Senior Championships in Botswana and the Region and Zone 6 Karate Championships in Swakopmund where he won a bronze medals for kumite in both championships and gold for Kumite and bronze for Kata at the Namibia Goju Kai Karate championships in Walvis Bay and won a gold medals at the Zonal Athletics championships won the Senior Sportsman of the year award at De Duine High School's annual sport awards.

Other award winners are: The school was blessed with the presence of World Karate Champion Shihan Leonard Martin (Goju Kai Karate), Boeta Mouton (Boetas Express),Tyrone Mouton (Sparta Football Club), Frans “Killa” Samaria (Eleven Arrows Football Club), Valentino Mentoor (Mentoor Fishing) and Nico Frygang (Freygang Builders) who all assist with the handing over of the trophies and certificates to the top sport achievers.
