Mother left baby in stepfather’s care when the horror took place Isaac Chikosi A one-year-old baby girl was killed at Karibib on Thursday, allegedly by her stepfather who was alone at home with her. The murder incident leaves not only the closely knit Karibib community in shock and horror, but also Namibia as a whole which continues to suffer from gender-based violence and crimes again children and under vulnerable people.

Ernst Mandebo Mutondo (27) was arrested shortly after the discovery and appeared in the Karibib magistrate's court yesterday. The mother of the little baby girl left her in the care of the stepfather when she had to go to work. The incident happened at the Usab location in Karibib. The mother went to work at 6:00 and returned at home at 18:00 and made the gruesome discovery. The body was first taken to the Usakos Mortuary and will be taken to the Walvis Bay Mortuary for post mortem examination.

Container terminal Continues from page 1 The local shipping industry has already been notified that the current container terminal would close for business on 17 August in order to move all containers to the new terminal.

A process has already begun whereby Namport's six rubber tyre gantry cranes are moved from their current location to the new terminal. The first gantry crane was already moved over the weekend and is currently stationary near the south gate in 5th Road. The other five gantry cranes will also be moved to this location and from there they will be undertaking the journey of a few hundred metres to the new container terminal.

China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC), the company that constructed the terminal, is now in the process of putting finishing touches to the construction project. The first reclamation work started in May 2014 and safe from a few months the project was completed in just over 5 years.

23 JULY 2019 The prevailing drought that has its grips on most regions of Namibia, including Erongo, has been under the spotlight during a meeting on Thursday between inhabitants of the region and President Hage Geingob.

During the meeting the Prime Minister Saara Kuukongelwa-Amadhila said research have determined some 4500 households in the Region are in need of drought aid. Although pledges have been received from private institutions and individuals, the aid is not enough.

Sharlien Tjambari The drought is laying in heavily among the communities of Omatjete in Erongo's Daures Constituency. Not only has poor rainfall resulted in a lack of grazing, but underground water tables are dropping and boreholes are running low or dry.

The traditional leader of the Zeraeua Traditional Authority, Chief Manase Zeraeua, briefed Namibia's Head of State Dr. Hage Geingob in Swakopmund on Friday over the woes the community of Omatjete suffer. A meeting was held between State House and the Traditional Authority at the Swakopmund municipal council chambers.

“We urgently need water”, said the Chief. Adding six boreholes have dried up.

“We are severely affected by the ongoing drought”, Chief Zeraeua explained and urged Government to make available at least six hammer mills which can be used to produce animal feed from bushes. The Chief explained this will take the community forward with animal husbandry, but also create some jobs.

Other issues Chief Zeraeua brought under the President's attention were poor roads in the area (Omaruru, Omastjete and Okombahe areas) and service delivery, specifically the clinic and the police station.

Land has been allocated for a police station at Omatjete a decade ago, still no police station is in existence there today.

Human-wildlife conflict was also under discussion. In particular elephant which pose a threat to humans in the area as well as destroying property.

......and a meeting after soldiers and livestock herders clash over grazing Farmers and soldiers of the Namibian Defence Force (NDF) allegedly clashed over grazing on the farm Etiro, near the Karibib air force base. The farmers wanted their animals to graze on the farm, but was allegedly manhandled by soldiers who did not want them to have access to the farm, as this is military area.

The confrontation was under discussion in Swakopmund on Friday when President Geingob met with the Zeraeua Traditional Authority. The President summonsed the military to the meeting to hear both sides of the story.

The Acting Chief of the Namibian Defence Force, Air Vice-Marshall Martin Pinehas, denied the allegations and said no civilians or farmers were beaten. He made it clear the public won't be safe on this farm, as there are military-related installations and equipment.

The President decided to task the Prime Minister, Saara Kuukongelwa-Amadhila to take the matter up with the communities affected.

Suicide at retirement village Isaac Chikosi A 77-year-old pensioner took his own life at the Swakopmund Retirement Village on Thursday 18 July. According to police reports the senior shot himself with a pistol.

Manfred Mai was home alone. His wife was out shopping when the incident occurred.

When the pensioner's wife returned home, she was surprised to find the house locked from inside and there was no response to her

knocking. The spokesperson for the police in the Erongo Region, Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu confirmed that the deceased was found in a pool of blood in the bathroom. The pistol was still in his right hand. No suicide note was left. No foul play suspected.

Prison Break at Henties Bay Eileen van der Schyff

The search is on for two rapists and one robber that escaped their holding cells in Henties Bay over the past weekend.

According to the spokesperson of the police in the Erongo Region, Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu, on Saturday 20 July the trio cut burglar bars on the roof of the holding cells and managed to open the door of the holding cell they were in.

67 000 tons of salt exported

Three vessels will load a total of 65 000 tons of salt in the port of Walvis Bay in the course of the next seven days. Loading operations commenced yesterday at berth 8 of the loading of 38 000 metric tons of salt aboard the bulk carrier Bold Voyager. On 25 July the bulker Falkenberg loads 7 000 metric tons and on 1 August the bulker Agia Sofia loads 22 000 tons.

The Swakopmund Lions Club recently donated groceries to the value of N$2 000 to families who were left homeless after a fire at the Mondesa Single Quarters.

Hands of Hope received the donation, which included five bags of clothes was received by Hands of Hope who will control the distribution to the shack victims.

The Detective Chief Inspector Daniel Gurirab said the fire actually began in one of the shacks near Moshitila Apartments and spread to eight other shacks on 14 June. The cause of the fire is still unknown and it is suspected that the owner of the shack where the fire started, forgot to switch off the stove and this might have resulted in the fire with no loss of life or serious injuries despite the loss of property.

Willingcommunity members of the public areurged to make donations of any kind to the shack fire victims.

Esau added: “It will indeed be difficult for right holders, who are not organised for value addition, to meet the

criteria for the scorecards. Once gazetted and thereby law, an inadequate performance on the scorecard could cost you dearly in terms of quota allocations among others.

Ellen Pakkies a Woman of virtue Rudi Bowe

Narrated anti-drug activist Ellen Pakkies from Lavender Hill a neighbourhood in Cape Town South Africa says the she is a woman with no infamy. Ellen Pakkies was at the coast to give motivational talks against drugs and alcohol abuse. She explained she came from a poor home where her parents were also caught up in alcohol and drug abuse.

She has known pain and suffering from the tender age of only four as she was exposed to all sorts of evil. Pakkies told her story starting with her early years and said that at the age of 13 she run away from home and found herself living on the streets, eating from dustbins and the way she earned money was through prostitution. Her everyday life on the streets was tough. She was raped, gang-raped, sodomised and kidnapped several times.

People living with Pakkies in the same house were also part of her abuse. Apart from not knowing the abuse she was suffering was wrong, Pakkies had nobody she could depend on or who was willing to stand up or fight for her rights. She went on by saying that she got married at the age of eighteen and divorced at twenty-one.

She got married again at twenty-four and fell pregnant and got a divorce at the age of 26. In 2009 Pakkies remarried her second husband and they are still married today.

Her youngest, Abie was introduced to a drug named tik at a young age by one of his brothers. Ellen Pakkies life became disastrous when her son started to steal her belongings to sell it for drugs in order to sustain his addiction. Pakkies pleaded for help from the police, social workers and rehabilitation centres, but alas, no one even listened to her case. The system failed her, and after much struggle Ellen Pakkies decided to take justice in her own hands. In 2007 Abie told her he will stop but she was already pushed too far. Pakkies found a rope in the back of the yard and while her son was sleeping, she put the rope around his neck and pulled it tight around the posts of the bed until he did not struggle anymore. “I felt instant relief from all the pain Abie has put me through.” Pakkies said. She said that after killing her son she went to work and told her boss she killed her son. Her boss took her to the police station, and she handed herself over. She remained in prison until she was given bail of R1000. In 2010 the Magistrate who presided over her case admitted the justice system failed her. The Magistrate sentenced Pakkies to 280 hours of community service and a suspended sentence of three years. From this her passion was born to do her part in educating families about the dangeras of drugs and al-

cohol abuse. Pakkies concluded: “My story is not beautiful but a tough reality therefore, I urge young people to think about how they are making their families and communities unhappy, by causing disunity through their actions. Parents should pay close attention to your children's behaviour. Especially if it starts to change. As soon as you see something different step in and try to support them”. Her Worship the Deputy Mayor Penelope MartinLouw said at the Prayer Dinner with Ellen Pakkies that drug abuse is something that has become deeply entrenched in our society.

The Deputy Mayor said “Close to a decade ago we observed a flickering of hope when the all over crime rate in Walvis Bay was decreased by almost 30% over a few short years. This because there was a concerted effort as various authorities pulled together and drove a successful anticrime campaign. “During the late 1900 and early 2000, drug related crimes were on the increase as children as young as 12 were found in possession of hard drugs such as crack cocaine. More than half of those arrested was below the age of twenty. Walvis Bay nearly surrendered to drug lords, but they haven't taken over thanks to the vigilant efforts of our Police and neighbourhood watch groups”, the Deputy Mayor added. The fight is far from over and we must do everything in our power to stop the self-destruction of our youth. The message should be loud and clear to our young audiences that if you start experimenting with drugs you are on your way to never-ending hell.

Parents and our youth should know that the modern drugs are much more powerful and intense than those of the hippie era as this new drug can take you to the ultimate levels of bliss and let you plummet into the depths of utter darkness. Children's brains are literally being fried.

In conclusion to her speech, Ellen Pakkies said: “I would like to thank the coastal community for their love, open hearts and hospitality may God bless you all and help you all in making the coast a drug free place. Special thanks to The Municipality of Walvis Bay, the CODEC team, all the schools, Namport, XCCS, MANICA, Indongo Toyota, Lagoon Chalets and my new friend the management and staff of Walvis Bay Convenient Centre. Feeding Namibia Rudi Bowe Home away from Home is a non-profit organisation with the only goal to help less fortunate children.

The organisation is feeding the hungry and assist in a humble way to keep them healthy and nourished. The group also provides a safe environment for the kids in need of shelter and fellowship.

With the soup kitchen they provide meals at no cost and all are served by committed and compassionate volunteers. Donations and own contributions by volunteers keep the pots cooking.

They provide 300 and more children with a meal every Saturday from 11:00 – 12:00 at Tutaleni High School in Kuisebmond. Here kids come running with their empty bowls from their homes to receive their meal for the day.

Even if they don't have soup the team always provides something to eat to the children.

A humble request herewith goes out to any person willing to donate the following, onions, beans, carrots, potatoes, peas, soup powder and or stew bones. The aim is to provide the children with weekly servings of wholesome and healthy meal.

NSMA brings home six world titles

VACANCIES

Seven athletes and three support members from Namibian Sport Martial Arts (NSMA) brought home 6 world titles from the International Sport Karate Association World Championships from 4 - 6 July at Disney's Coronado Springs Resort and Convention Centre, Orlando Florida USA. The 6 World Champions that brought the titles home are Louis Maletzky (Men Intermediate) for two first places in High Kick Breaking and Continuous Sparring, Caleigh Jordaan (Girls 16 - 17 Advanced) for two first places in Clash Sparring and Continuous Sparring and Dorothy Bachmann (Ladies A and AA Black Belt) for two first places in Points Sparring and Clash Sparring.

The event is hailed as the biggest Martial Arts event in the world with approximately 6000 athletes from 50 countries competing in more than 100 divisions, ranging from Traditional Forms, Weapons, Grappling, MMA, Breaking, Points Sparring, Clash and Continuous sparring.

The Namibian team arrived 5 days prior to the event to acclimatise and ensure that they are in top form took part in High Kick Breaking, Points Sparring, Clash Sparring, Continuous Sparring and Traditional Forms and with solid performances by all athletes that they brought home 6 world titles in their respective divisions.

Daily training sessions were held to get used to the high temperatures and extremely high humidity experienced in Florida at this time of the year, with some time left to relax and explore the area, with team outings to some of the Theme Parks and Water Parks which make the area a sought after destination.

The NSMA would like to thank all for their supporters and especially the various corporate who assisted with prizes for the raffle which ensured that this was achievable.

In September the Namibian team will participate in qualifiers for the World Championships September this year at Destiny in South Africa as the NSMA are planning to attend the World Championships in 2021.

Coastal Cricket scoops awards Rudi Bowe

Coastal cricket scooped 15 awards at the Cricket Namibia's (CN) award evening that were held on 12 July in Windhoek was to honour the people behind the success of a huge year for Namibian Cricket for the hard work.

Junior Coastal Cricket Academy (JCCA) are the Regional first division coastal T20 and 40 over's Championship winners for the 2018/2019 season. !Nara Primary School in Kuisebmond Walvis Bay is the Kwata Cricket School of the year.

The coastal cricketers that received awards are, Jack Brassell, under 13 Player of the year, Renier Bosman, under 15 Player of the year, Kyle Saunders, under 17 Player of the year, Lauritz Haccou, Youth Coach of the Year.

Mercely Dantago received the Women's and Girls' awards for Junior Player of the year, Nian Grobler, Top Batsmen and Top Bowler in the T20 and 40 over's 1st Division Coastal, Ricku Mans, Top Bowler for the T20 1st Division Coastal and Matthew Stander, Top bowler in the 40 over's 1stDivision Coastal, Nolene Winborn received the International Scorer award for 2018/2019 season and Esau Heyns the award for the most Improved Umpire of the year.

Commission (NSC) of Namibia, Freddy Simataa Mwiya, at the award evening said the NSC needs to re-evaluate the status of CN. Cricket is now on the same professional level as rugby, soccer and boxing.

The best and biggest support Government can provide to sport codes is creating and maintaining a conducive environment for sport and for competition. In this regard Namibia is a peaceful nation and there is political- economic stability which are pillars upon which a healthy sport nation is developed.

“It is our wish to support all sport codes financially, but the economical situation in the country makes it very difficult for the NSC to do so”, explain Mwiya.

It is no secret that the allocated N$286 million dollars is not enough to run sport in the country to the level desired.

Therefore, said Mwiya, everyone need to come together to urge political leadership to understand the value of sport. An in doing so entice our leadership to spend more on sport development.

For children to succeed in sport, parents must be involved. Mwiya expressed appreciation for what Namibian parents do for their children in sport.

Playtime in the Lagoon Park Rudi Bowe

The PLAYTIME Sports Development Trust held their Playtime in the Lagoon Park this past Sunday.

Playtime in the Lagoon Park are part of the Lagoon Park Market which takes place one Sunday every month. The Playtime Trust sets up Multi-Sports equipment so the children can be entertained whilst the grownups enjoy the market.

This month Head Coach Osvaldo Dos Santos organized a mini 3D football tournament. As usual the sports opportunities were a popular side show and we are grateful for Nadia's assistance in accommodating Playtime sports into this extremely well organised & popular market event.

The young soccer players practice every Monday and Wednesday at the Sparta Sport Field and shows off their skills to the parents and the shoppers at the Lagoon Park Market.

New records set at Short Course Gala There were 12 Namibian swimming records broken and 2 NASU records in individual swimming events and 5 new Namibian Relay records set and 1 new NASU relay record at the Short Course Gala 3 held in Swakopmund, Oranjemund and Windhoek.

It was an unbelievable number with no past statistics to compare it. Suffice to say, it was a brilliant gala and all the swimmers performed phenomenally well.

Mikah Burger broke an unbelievable 5 records in the age category 13-14 with Alexander Skinner broke the under 19 50m Butterfly record and Ronan Wantenaar Broke the 1718 year 100m IM & the OPEN age category 100m IM. Father and sons dominate lawn bowls Nationals Rudi Bowe

Poena Olivier and his two sons Cabous Olivier and Ronan Olivier dominated the Annual National Lawn Bowls Championships at the Transnamib Bowling Club in Windhoek on Saturday 13 July.

The Championships attracted 76 bowlers who competed in Singles, Pairs, Triples and Fours divisions.

Cabous Olivier was crowned as the National Men's Singles Champion. Poena Olivier and his two sons were crowned as the National Triple Champions and the Oliviers with their friend AJ Visser were crowned as the Four divisions National Champions.

The annual National Lawn Bowls Championship is an event on the Bowls calendar where bowlers do not need to compete as a club but may choose their own partners.

Players from different clubs end up playing together and is open to all bowlers who are affiliated to a Namibian Bowls Association.

The turn out this year was less from last year with only a few bowlers from the coastal clubs competing. Excellent bowls was played at the tournament and many new names ended got medals. Several younger players are coming in to challenge the older bowlers.

In addition to the winning medals there are

two additional medals that are awarded every year, in the men's section and the Ladies 'section. The Player of the Tournament went to Cabous Olivier in the men's section and Mandie Steenkamp in the ladies' section.

Personality of the tournament went to Christo Steenkamp and Anjuleen Viljoen in the men's section and the ladies' sections respectively.

As a matter of interest, Eros Bowling Club won a total of 14 medals, Trans Namib Bowling Club 10, Namib Park Bowling Club and Windhoek Bowling Club 8 each, Rossmund Bowling Club 7 and Omeya Bowling Club 5.

The Namibian National Men's Team that will participate in the African States Tournament from 19 to 24 August in Kenya consists of Johan Jacobs, Ewald Vermeulen, Poena Olivier, Cabous Olivier and JP Fouche. The Namibian women's team withdrew from the tournament.
