Freak accident at car wash - boy dies

Eileen van der Schyff A seventeen-year-old boy was crushed by a vehicle against a wall in Swakopmund’s Mondesa suburb on Sunday afternoon, resulting in his death hours later at the town’s state hospital.

Rashid Somseb was helping out at a car wash. A taxi driver brought his vehicle in for a clean. He was requested to drive the vehicle onto the wash bay. Somseb was standing in front of the vehicle giving directions.

It is suspected the driver pressed down the vehicle’s accelerator instead of the brakes. The vehicle darted forward, hit Sombseb and pinned him to the wall behind him.

Despite efforts by medical personnel they could not save Somseb’s life.

Four-year-old chokes - dies Sharlien Tjambari

A four-year-old girl died in the Walvis Bay state hospital early on Sunday morning, hours after she choked on a piece of meat at her parent's home the event before at around 21:00.

Lonia Naloliwa Shihepo and her family were having dinner at their home in Kuisebmond's Kormorant Street when she choked on a piece of meat and it got stuck in her throat.

The girl's parents rushed her to the state hospital, but despite efforts by medical staff the girl died.

Iyambo was acquitted of the charge against him last week, but his newfound freedom was of a very short nature. He was immediately arrested again for outstanding warrants of arrest for two other crimes elsewhere in Namibia to which he is linked.

The trio were supposed to be sentenced yesterday, but it was postponed yesterday to 25 October (Thursday).

Santa Shoebox Project collects 354 boxes this year

Santa Shoebox Project collects and distributes Christmas gifts for underprivileged children throughout Namibia and South Africa. They currently have drop offs in Walvis Bay and Swakopmund.

Natasha Lombard, the coordinator of Santa Shoebox Walvis Bay told the namib times that they collected a whopping 354 boxes with gifts this year to distribute to five schools in Walvis Bay. She went on by saying: “We want to thank all individuals from Walvis Bay, Swakopmund, Oshakati and Windhoek who opened their hearts and pledged shoeboxes to selected children.

President Geingob in Kenya It gives me great pleasure, to express my heartfelt appreciation to the Government and people of Kenya and especially to you my Dear Brother, for the warm welcome my delegation received upon our arrival in this historic city of Nairobi.

The generous hospitality extended to the Namibian delegation since our arrival, which is so characteristic of Kenya and its people, has made us feel home away from home. And so we say, ASANTENI SANA! Your Excellency, Our longstanding bilateral relations epitomise the spirit of Pan - Africanism. Pan-Africanism was decisive in breaking the yoke of colonial domination and it is befitting, on this auspicious occasion, to acknowledge the contribution of one of the movement's most notable protagonists – the first President of the Republic of Kenya, Mzee Jomo Kenyatta Mzee Jomo Kenyatta's commitment to the liberation of Africa had early beginnings.

However, the movement began to gain serious traction following the Fifth Pan African Conference which took place in Manchester during October 15-21, 1945, where he was joined by other luminaries such as Ras Makonnen, Kwame Nkrumah, Amy Garvey, W.E. Du Bois and George Padmore, among others.

The decisions taken at this conference set in motion an unstoppable wave of events that would result in the liberation of our African continent.

Consequently, when Namibians faced the oppression at the hands of South African apartheid regime, Kenya and its people opened their doors for Namibians. The narrative of the Namibian struggle for national liberation will not be complete without invoking the role played by Kenya and its people.

The Republic of Kenya contributed a large military contingent to the United Nations Transition Assistance Group (UNTAG). The unwavering commitment of the UNTAG personnel at that time, with its dedicated son of the Kenyan soil, Lieutenant-General Daniel Ishmael Opande, as its Deputy Force Commander from 1989 to 1990, remains fresh in memories of many Namibians.

In that unpredictable and difficult milieu, the UNTAG personnel remained unshakeable. And together with the great Kenyan contingent, we observed not only a landslide victory for the SWAPO Party, but a long awaited celebration of the end of apartheid and beginning of freedom and independence.

When the apartheid administration was defeated and its colonial masters had to pack and leave to allow the Namibian people to chart their own destiny, Lieutenant General Opande heeded the call by our Founding President Comrade Sam Nujoma, to remain behind and assist with the stablishment of the Namibian Defence Force. He did a sterling job making Namibia, Kenya and Africa proud.

I salute this great dedicated Son of Africa, for his invaluable contribution to the noble cause of Namibia's emancipation and nationhood.

Your Excellency, Having traversed down the arduous path of the fight against colonialism and having emerged victorious, Kenya and Namibia are now ceased with the challenges of the second phase of the struggle. Our people are free, but they need food, clothes, shelter and jobs. Our youth want to pursue their dreams in a world of immense opportunities. The time is opportune for Kenya and Namibia to once again unite in the spirit of Pan Africanism, in order to deliver on the promise of economic emancipation and the Africa We Want as underscored in our Agenda 2063.

I am aware that despite the excellent bilateral cooperation between Namibia and Kenya in various areas, trade activities have been very minimal. That means there is potential for growth. There is a room for improvement, especially in the area of transport and logistics. The Republic of Kenya has an excellent transport and logistical network as well as one of the biggest, and well managed harbours in Africa, Port Mombasa. Kenya's experience in making Mombasa a Port of choice for most East African countries could be a good lesson to Namibia, as we strive to make the Port of Walvis Bay a premier regional destination and a gateway into Southern Africa. These efforts have the potential to contribute immensely towards the acceleration of the African regional integration process.

Our cooperation in the field of Education, Agriculture, Health, Defence and Aviation is noteworthy. Namibia remains grateful, especially for the assistance received through the establishment of a heart unit at the Windhoek Central Hospital. The services of the Kenyan health professionals who have assisted patients at various hospitals around our country is greatly appreciated.

To take our cooperation to the next level, let us deepen our trade, educate our people, and elevate our cooperation as per decisions of the recently concluded Inaugural Session of the Joint Commission of Cooperation.

Your Excellency, As the Chairperson of SADC, Namibia believes that with the support of other multilateral and regional institutions, Africa will continue its long-standing efforts to help establish an enabling environment for economic growth and prosperity. SADC will continue to support the efforts to devise new investment strategies and trade practices for the benefit of Africans. This will help accelerate regional integration as witnessed during the recent signing of the Agreement Establishing the Africa Continental Free Trade Area.

Your Excellency, Africa's time has come. Together, we can eradicate poverty and hunger, restore peace and give hope to those caught in conflicts. Together we can deliver on the promise of economic emancipation.

Together we can achieve the Africa We Want. As so eloquently said by Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, “Our children may learn about the heroes of the past. Our task is to make ourselves the architects of the future.” To our Kenyan brothers and sisters, and Namibians – let us join hands and become the heroes of our children by becoming the architects of the future.

In conclusion, I wish once again to thank you my Dear Brother, Your Excellency, President Kenyatta, the Government and the people of the Republic of Kenya for the warm welcome and hospitality extended to me and my delegation, which has made our stay in this beautiful City of Nairobi, a very memorable one indeed.

Whale carcass washes up at Langstrand The same carcass of whale that died in the fishing harbour Floris Steenkamp The sea current washed a whale carcass ashore near Langstrand, days after the carcass was pulled by a light craft to a spot south of Pelican Point on the peninsula’s outer bound. The original plan was for the carcass to wash ashore south of Pelican Point, but the current is unpredictable at best.

The Hump Back whale was seen swimming in the fishing harbour last Monday. The whale was visibly injured. Late last week the whale lost its energy to stay afloat and it sunk and drowned. On Friday the carcass was pulled to the Syncrolift and lifted clear of the water for dolphin and whale researchers to identify the type of whale, its size and weight and also to determine what kind of injuries it had.

Later on Friday the whale carcass was lowered back into the water and towed around Pelican Point so that the carcass can wash ashore and nature takes its course.

However, the sea current drifted the whale carcass into a northeasterly direction and it washed ashore at Langstrand. The rope tied around the carcass tail section corresponds the with rope used to tow the carcass to Pelican Point on Friday, leaving little doubt it is the same carcass and not another whale stranding. This was the second stranding along the central west coast in so many days and has researchers somewhat worried.

Efforts will now be focused to bury the whale there.

Court Swakopmund Report Magistrates Court Derrick Brockerhoff (36) and Candice Brockerhoff (34), appeared on a charge of dealing in cocaine. The accused were found not guilty and the case was acquitted.

Amos Shimbilinga (33), appeared on a charge of theft. The accused was found guilty and sentenced to pay a fine of N$700 or four month imprisonment term.

Stefanus Kauiiue (30), appeared on a charge of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm. The matter was postponed to 23 October for other reason. The accused remains in custody.

Songo Napolon (30), appeared on a charge of failure to pay maintenance. The case against the accused was withdrawn because the bail was to be paid in as maintenance.

Witness wanted urgently The driver of this vehicle failed on Saturday afternoon to maintain a safe following distance and this was the result.

His vehicle was involved in a rear-end collision with a truck.

The driver was unscathed, but apparently afterwards refused a breathalyser test.

The police took him in custody.

The Namibian Police at Walvis Bay is urgently looking for a witness, Mr Epafras Nghili-favali Haifidi residing at house number 377, Silver street, Mondesa.

He is requested to urgently make contact with Detective Warrant Officer Johan Henry Geiseb of the Serious Crime Sub Division at 081 262 9842 or 064 219049. He is a witness in a copper theft/smuggling case.

Rear-end crash on the Swakopmund bridge In the early hours of Saturday, 20 October, on the B2 coastal road a vehicle was involved in a rear-end collision with a Volkswagen sedan. It was on the Swakopmund bridge.

One of the drivers ran away from the scene. No injuries were reported, but both vehicles were badly damaged and might have to written off all together.

African Penguins face extinction Sharlien Tjambari

The National Marine Pollution Contingency Plan Operations Team (OP) had a meeting with delegates from the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCOBB) to improve preparedness and response to conserve the African Penguins.

SANCOBB is currently working with the American Zoo Association (AZA) that runs a program called Saving Animals from Extinction (SAFE) that has a Disaster Relief Project for African penguins. The African penguin, which breeds only in Namibia and South Africa has been shifted from vulnerable to endangered status and is now facing extinction if substantial attention is not given to the species.

Dr Katta Ludynia, a Research Manager at SANCOBB, said the population status of African Penguins is currently at 21 500, of this total 16 000 are in South Africa and 5 500 are breeding along the coastline of Namibia.

She further explained the African Penguin is faced with many challenges and threats such as food shortage, lack of suitable breeding habitat, climate change, oil spills which threaten their lives, diseases and in most cases they are introduced to predators. According to her, if the number of the African Penguin continues to drop, the species could be extinct in two decades.

According to Paulina Moses from the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology, and also a member of the National Marine Pollution Contingency Plan Operations Team, SANCOBB has possible funding to purchase specialised oil wildlife response equipment at strategic locations near African Penguin colonies or rehabilitation centres as well as provide training to relevant individuals. It is against this background that the OP deems it necessary to meet SANCOBB and deliberate on how Namibia can benefit from project.

GIPF Holds Stakeholders' Consultative Meeting The Government Institutions Pension Fund held their first consultative meeting in Swakopmund last week Thursday at the Seaside Hotel and Spa. In attendance were the CEO David Nuyoma who opened the meeting under the theme: “Delivering better services through efficiency.”

Nuyoma emphasised the fund's aim to deliver outstanding services and to enhance service delivery making GIPF a leading pension fund.

“The fund seeks to remain a beacon of hope for thousands that depend on it for their present and future”, said Nuyoma.

Speaking with regards to the payments of death benefits, Goms Menette expressed the introduction of a partial payment that would alleviate the current lengthy waiting period for beneficiaries.

Giving the keynote address, Hon Cleophas Mutjavikua governor of the Erongo region, echoed the public's cry for better service delivery in the country and therefore appealed to the GIPF for quality service delivery citing the distances many must travel in order to access the services provided by GIPF. The fund's operation manager Elvis Nashilongo shed more light on the challenges they face and possible solutions. Nashilongo detailed various methods and times saving options that the fund has introduced giving stakeholders a firm understanding of the fund's current and future ambitions

NASP archery in Mariental The first NASP archery competition was held in Mariental and hosted by Danie Joubert CS. The day was a huge success; with 64 archers of 13 were new archers. To begin with, the weather was lovely, but during the course of the morning, the wind started up.

The archers were not put off by this. Even with the wind there were still many very good scores. During the day, braaivleis was sold to keep the energy levels up and "slush puppies" kept the heat at bay. Tickets (to win a handmade beer archer with a bow and arrows) could be purchased to benefit the archery club. At the end of the day, the warm sun in Mariental had burnt everyone and with the AAG (Adult Archery Group), David showed where the carrots were buried with his precision archery.

Volleyball 4 fun Indongo Toyota Walvis Bay, hosted the Volleyball 4 fun event at the annually very successful WalVISfees on the 5-6 October.

Namibia Delivers 3 World Champions Eleven Namibian archers participated in the World Field Archery Championships in Potchefstroom, South Africa, from the 8th of October to the 12th of October 2018. A total of 412 archers from across the world took part in this 5-day event.

Countries participating included South Africa, USA, Switzerland, Estonia, England and Scotland, just to name a few.

Jannie Meuwesen from Lüderitz competed in the toughest style in Field Archery and still walked away with the gold medal, being crowned the World Champion. Dirk de Bod from Windhoek, a scholar at Windhoek Gymnasium, had to tough out the junior boys' freestyle category and also walked away with a gold medal.

CF Brandt, a scholar at Welwitchia Private School, took on boys from Hungary with an Olympic recurve bow breaking every Namibian record standing and walked away with the gold medal and was crowned the World Champion.

JP Viljoen, a scholar at Windhoek Gymnasium, took part in the newest class in Field Archery, for ages 17-19, and smashed all Namibian records over 5 day period and took home a silver medal. Nanda Schoeman, a scholar at Windhoek Afrikaans Private School, also took home a silver medal competing in the junior female bow hunter unlimited class.

Some archers broke their personal best scores and 10 total Namibian records were shattered.

On Saturday, 06 October 2018, the Walvis Bay Golf Club held its annual Walvis Bay Club Championship to determine the Champion Golfer of the year in the Club.

This is one of the club's flagship events and the turnout was substantially more than in 2017. 33 Players entered and had to play 2 rounds of golf on the day.

Hope for the Nation The Brave Warriors 1-0 win over Mozambique on Tuesday night gives Namibians fans the much-needed hope of making it to the 2019 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals despite the date against Guinea Bissau next month will go a long way in confirming Namibia's place among the elite on the continent.

After guiding his side to an unprecedented second win over Mozambique in four days and take their Group K tally to seven points, Coach Ricardo Mannetti reckons the AFCON is insight after the Tuesday night win.

“We have not qualified yet but have done ourselves proud indeed today. The players have shown that they deserve to be respected and they really have risen up. The fans today were fantastic and we now need to produce the same result against Guinea Bissau next month and get to the ten points which is our target to qualify,” says the teary Mannetti.

Namibia is now a force to reckon with on the continent. We won COSAFA in 2015 and then the Plate in 2016, qualified for the CHAN finals in 2018, and went all the way to the quarterfinals without a league in session and is a win away from making it to AFCON 2019 without a league.

The Warriors have proved them self and the players have given their all. Even some players that were on the sidelines have joined the project and are making significant contributions. These players make Mannetti a good coach and he does have a team with depth.

Namibia were dealt a heavy blow on 87 minutes as the impressive Denzil Haoseb received his second yellow and his marching order for apparent time wasting. Defender Charles Hambira came on for Shitembi to close shop in the five added minutes.

The next match day will see Namibia host Guinea Bissau and Mozambique play Zambia between 12-20 November before the final match-day in March 2019. The group winner and the runner-up will qualify for the 32nd edition of the Total African Cup of Nations to be played in Cameroon from 15 June to 13 July 2019.
