Seaflower Pelagic not part of #Fishrot - workers plead for a quota Floris Steenkamp Trade unions representing workers in Namibia's fishing industry urged Government this week to allocate a horse mackerel quota to Seaflower Pelagic Processing, “as a matter of life and death�. If this biggest fishing company in Walvis Bay is not allocated a quota, approximately 600 people will be jobless. The knock-on effect that would be disastrous to Walvis Bay's already severely strained economy and high jobless rate caused by mass business closures due to the Covid-19 lockdown and restrictions. Workers at Seaflower Pelagic Processing staged a peaceful protest at the company's premises on Wednesday. Deputy Ministers on Covid-19 fact finding mission to Erongo A Government delegation of Deputy Ministers arrived in Walvis Bay on Wednesday, to assess the Covid-19 situation in the Walvis Bay, Swakopmund and Henties Bay local authority areas. The delegation consists of the Deputy Minister of Urban and Rural Development Derek Klazen (former mayor of Walvis Bay); Deputy Minister of Education, Arts and Culture, Faustina Caley, Health and Social Services Deputy, Minister Ester Muinjangue, and the Deputy Minister of Home Affairs, Immigration and Safety and Security, Daniel Kashikola. The delegation is under the leadership of the Deputy Minister of Labour, Industrial Relations and Employment Creation, Hafeni Ndemula (former Erongo Regional Councillor). Continues on page 2
