It seems tension between transporters, agents and shipping lines is looming, regarding the newly implemented Asycuda (Automated System for Customs Data) World, used at the Walvis Bay harbour by the Customs and Excise Department. The Asycuda World System serves as a substitute for the formerly used Asycuda ++ System. It is used

to verify and control cargo transported through the different gates and was implemented on 1 Oc-

tober. According to some transporters and agents the new system has many loopholes and error messages,

claiming that it is time consuming. “The Customs offices were jammed with swarms of agents, try-

ing to get assistance and agents had to constantly follow up on their clearances at customs to avoid fur-

ther delays” the namib times was told. It is also alleged that as a result of this scenario, some Customs of-

The community was shocked after the boy was attacked by Pretorius’ dogs while he walked past the residence. The gate was allegedly wide open. According to witnesses who arrived at the scene, a certain Mr Ruben van der Merwe chased the dogs away from the boy. Pretorius, not at home

at the time, was contacted. The boy was transported to a private hospital and treated for numerous bite marks on his body. Apparently a brawl broke out between the two men when Pretorius arrived at the scene. Pretorius alleged that Van der Merwe hit him behind his head. A witness living

in the same neighbourhood voi-ced her concern over their safety. “We feel unsafe. We have previously contacted the SPCA about this however they said it was the municipality’s responsibility. I knew someone would be bitten at some stage and now a boy has been bitten,” she said.

NEWS

Meersig dog brawl continues The newspaper was contacted on Tuesday by a relative of Pretorius to visit his residence for inspection on the behaviour of his dogs. When the reporter arrived at his residence, there were only three dogs on the property in question which all showed great affection towards the reporter instead of aggression. In conversation with Pretorius at the time, he recalled what occurred on Monday. “Van der Merwe came to my house on Monday. It seemed that he was intoxicated. He told a friend of mine to “go call that ‘moffie’ that lives here”. When I saw him I told him to leave immediately. He did not leave, which resulted in me having to call for police assistance. When the police arrived they instructed Van der Merwe’s friend, who accompanied him, to rather drive him home, because he was intoxicated. Van der Merwe threatened me by saying he will bring his dogs and show me what his dogs can do. He only came to my house to create more havoc. I have laid a charge against him for trespassing (case number WBCR65102014),” Pretorius said. When asked why he suspects that his gate is being opened by other parties he said “the only reason I can think of why anyone would want to open my gate is for the adult dogs to run away, in order to steal the puppies, as I am a breeder. I have put up warning signs that I have guard dogs. Any dog would protect his territory. I love my dogs and do not want to lose them over people not wanting to leave

me and my dogs in peace. I feel sorry for the boy that was bitten. I hope he recovers soon. However people only talk about the boy that was bitten, but when will the parents teach children to stop teasing dogs, not to mention to try and steal the dogs or to leave my gate alone? Teach your children to leave the property of others alone. My dogs are not aggressive unless they are teased or harassed. My dogs are able to join with other dogs without any trouble occurring. I myself have a daughter of my own. Her friends who visit her have also been surrounded by my dogs. My dogs never attacked those children. This is the first time something like this has happened. I have learnt a lesson from this and that is to keep my gate under lock and chain, since people keep fiddling with my gate. Again I am sorry the child was bitten. The child knows in his heart what happened. All I ask is for people to leave me and my dogs alone,” he said. The newspaper contacted Van der Merwe for comment on the allegations against him. “I was at the boy’s house on Monday to ask if he was alright. After I left, my friend and I walked in the street and Pretorius came to us with a baseball bat and hit my friend over the head,” he said. When Van der Merwe was told that there are allegations by Pretorius that he went to Pretorius’ house, he

laughed and said that Pretorius was standing outside the yard with a baseball bat and simply attacked them for no reason. The boy’s age was questioned by the public since reports of the incident were published. It was confirmed by the boy’s father to the newspaper that the boy is indeed nine years old. “Van der Merwe went to Pretorius’ house on Monday because the gate was open once again. Van der Merwe went inside the yard with a friend to tell Pretorius to close his gate. Pretorius approached the man with a baseball bat. I have laid a charge against Pretorius for what transpired on Sunday,” the father alleged. The namib times spoke to the Walvis Bay SPCA Kennel Master and Investigating Officer, Mr Peter Brooks, regarding the behaviour of Pretorius' dogs. “Firstly, there has never been direct evidence or signs of dog fighting regarding Logan’s dogs. Secondly, Logan has been very open towards us concerning his animals and their welfare.

I personally have never detected any aggression from these dogs towards myself or my staff members at the SPCA when we did inspections. These dogs are not aggressive. We do body inspections on a regular basis whereby we handle the dogs ourselves and never have any of these dogs shown aggression towards us at all. There are clear sign boards on Logan’s gate as well that have been there for quite a period of time, warning that there are dogs on guard,” Brooks said. According to the Municipality Pretorius recently agreed to obey the rules of all municipal regulations regarding his dogs. Nampol Chief Inspector Erastus Iikuyu told the newspaper yesterday that Pretorius was arrested on Wednesday morning under the municipality bylaws, which entail that a dog owner is obligated to keep the animal inside the premises. “He was arrested for releasing of a vicious dog, alternatively assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm,” Iikuyu said.

The impact and ripple effect supposedly resulted in enormous pressure on the part of clearing agents, to finally release cargo from shipping lines. Agents allegedly had to swallow late fees, Namport overtime etc in order to get cargo out of the port. “No prior arrangements were made by the Walvis Bay Corridor Group, Asycuda World and Customs to approach Namport, to allow additional hours for getting cargo out of the port” a source told the newspaper. Some port users also expressed their dismay, regarding the fact that the new system did not undergo a trial period, before being put to work. Also displeasing them, is the fact that training to work on the new system was supposedly provided only one week prior to implementation, and furthermore all the stakeholders received training altogether. This, according to them, was not appropriate,

as the different divisions, each have diverse functions. It is further alleged that some Customs officers had to be trained after implementation, while some other officers have not been trained fully to be 100% qualified to handle and work on the new system. The newspaper asked for comment from the Customs & Excise Deputy Director, Ms Yoolokeni Haihambo, and during an exclusive interview, she noted that, “with any new development, hick-ups are inevitable”. Ms Haihambo further remarked that the main reason why agents, transporters, etc might be dissatisfied, is the fact that they did not have an Asycuda World computer at the gate, when the system was implemented. This was however sorted out and things are starting to run smoothly, she explained. The (old) Asycuda ++ System, according to Ms Haihambo,

was very time consuming, as Customs officials previously had to depend on hard copies of Namport to register cargo. This hard copies were received after cargo entered through the gates and thus, provided a breeding ground for falsified documents. “With the new system we are able to do the registering ourselves and also verify and control the containers, as well as serial numbers” Ms Haihambo commented. Regarding the short training period, she stated that it is not a whole new system, but just an upgrading of the old one, with only some new functions being added. “There is no way we can move from a good system to a bad system, we have to keep trend with the latest technology and this system is definitely user friendly” Ms Haihambo stressed. She concluded by noting that no case of bribery was reported to her office.

Close to thousand erven for harbour town

Marshallino Beukes A petition, concerning the high cost of electricity, the regular shack fires, overcrowding in Walvis Bay and the unaffordability of housing, was presented by the Trade Union Congress of Namibia to the Walvis Bay Municipality on 1 October and progress was made in this regard.

The petition primarily requested the Town Council to provide 8 000 serviced erven of 300 square metres each to residents and the provision of land to employers of such individuals, who wish to construct houses for their employees. Following the petition hand-over and demonstration, the Town Council and representatives of TUCNA met last week to discuss the concerns. According to the Municipality, an invitation to the meeting had been issued to the group, prior to the demonstration, “but they (TUCNA) chose to conduct the protest march first”. At the meeting the Council pointed out that they are equally concerned about the plight of shack dwellers.

On the unaffordability of housing issue, it was indicated that the Council is constantly engaged in discussions with the Government and its principal representative in the housing section, Namibia Housing Enterprises (NHE), to address the provision of low cost housing. A statement regarding beneficiaries of the Mass Housing Programme is supposedly soon to be expected. According to the Council, they have repeatedly invited employers to apply for land in order to facilitate houses for their employees. “Some have heeded the call, but more need to be done,” the Municipality’s statement reads. The Walvis Bay Municipality has availed about

1 600 erven for the Mass Housing Project and is currently busy to finalise the servicing of close to 1 000 erven, as part of its ongoing land development programme. “Thus, hundreds of erven will be available in Narraville, Kuisebmond and Meersig, within the next 2-6 months” the Municipality states. They furthermore claim that progress has been made in efforts to alleviate the plight of the poor, although with limited resources. They also noted that their door is wide open for serious social partners, such as the Trade Union Congress of Namibia, to become part of the solution, and not only focus on highlighting the problems collectively faced.

Shameful state of TransNamib's new 'train station' REAL WORLD: Following promises of great developments, a half-built concrete structure without any lights, services or signage now serves as the Swakopmund Railway Station.

Jade McClune Swakopmund used to have one of the most beautiful train stations in the country, but not anymore. Renowned for its sturdy architecture, the old station provided a grand welcome to new visitors arriving at the coast by train and left people with a strong first impression of the town and its heritage. People arriving by train today may well be a left with a sense of shock and horror at the situation. Over the years the service has deteriorated to a situation, where train passengers now have to make their way to the industrial area, where they will have to cross at least three sets of railway tracks in the dark to get to a half-built structure that now stands in place of a proper train station. There is in fact no train station, just an incomplete concrete structure

with no roof, no doors, no lights, or any service. Those approaching from the main road will literally have to climb onto the station platform by standing on the tracks. There are no working lights at the platform or anywhere along the gravel route, rendering the place a major health and safety risk. There are also no security officers on duty and there are no visible road signs or markings anywhere to indicate the safe route to the so-called station. There are also no safety markings at the platform, not even to indicate the safe distance from the edge of the platform, nor any sign to indicate the name of the 'station'. The unpainted concrete structure offers no shelter

or comfort whatsoever to passengers. There are also no toilet facilities, forcing people who urgently need to relieve themselves to cross the railway tracks and relieve themselves in the open in the dark. Passengers arriving from Windhoek on Tuesday expressed total disappointment at the deteriorating level of TransNamib's service. On Monday an elderly businesswoman at the town, who did not want to be named, fell from the same platform and severely injured her leg and foot. Yesterday she was still on medication and confirmed that the condition of the half-built station presents a clear and present danger to the passengers, particularly the elderly and disabled. She is concerned that

others could be more seriously injured. Mr Paolo Shipoke of Stacks Property Group, who heads up the Bahnhof Square Development, said yesterday he is fully aware of the deplorable situation at the would-be station in Swakopmund. The creation of a modern new station was central to the design of the new Bahnhof Square Mall, but the project has run into major hurdles and as a result the town has in fact been left without a train station. “We would have finished

the station by now, but we stopped [due to a dispute with the ministry of works] and the funders said no funds would be released until the problems are sorted out.” “Everything would have been finished by now, but we had to stop on the orders of TransNamib,” he said, in reference to a recent decision by the Minister of Works and Transport to review TransNamib's decision to sell the large property to private developers. The minister reportedly considers the terms unfavourable.

As a result the entire Bahnhof Square development has ground to a complete halt. There is no indication of any ongoing earthworks and construction. Shipoke said there is not much they can do under the circumstances and referred further questions to TransNamib. TransNamib, which put in place yet another 'turnaround strategy' last month, at the cost of some N$400 million to the taxpayer, has incurred massive costs and suffered reputational damage as a result of repeated train crashes, of which

there have been no less than five in the past two years. Getting timely answers from the management of the troubled parastatal has generally proven to be a challenge. TransNamib's spokesperson Ms Paulina Hangula said yesterday that she had just returned from a long period of leave and would answer as soon as she could. At the time of going to print, neither TransNamib nor the Ministry of Works and Transport had responded to questions sent to them yesterday.

Marienheim Hostel still Sharlien Tjambari needs help The Marienheim hostel in Tamariskia, Swakopmund, which was scorched by a devastating fire on 19 January, this year, are currently under re-construction, but more funds are needed. The renovation of the hostel has been ongoing since August this year. The hostel is run by the Roman Catholic Church and a request for public assistance, in order to finish renovating the burned block, was recently reported on in the namib times. “Even though the renovation is ongoing, sometimes the builders stop because they run out of building materials” said Sister Reginalda Shivute of the Roman Catholic Church. She also said they need more donations for roof materials, paint, cement, etc. Sister Shivute also said that all donations given will be used for the welfare of the children. “We have turned the study hall into a bedroom for the boys and all the learners are now studying in the dining hall” she commented. All donations and forms of support are welcomed. If you want to assist, please contact Sister Shivute on 064 461 441/081 309 2617, or if you can assist financially the bank account is as follows; Bank Windhoek, Account Name: Marienheim Hostel.

“Even if I had the results from the pathologists, I would not share it with the media. You just have to wait for the case to be finalised”. These were the words of the Erongo Region’s police spokesperson, Deputy Commissioner Otillie Kashuupulwa, on an enquiry regarding the post mortem results of the late Mrs Mutaleni Ndjalukeni Jonas (43). Two weeks ago, the Swakopmund community was shocked, after it was reported that Mrs Jonas, better known as Julia, was allegedly poisoned by her estranged husband. The tragedy occurred on the morning of 8 October, at around 00:20. Mrs Jonas and her estranged husband, Mr Junias Jonas, supposedly had marital problems, and although still legally married, have been separated for some time.

The late Julia had a protection order against her husband, which barred him from going near her or her residence. The protection order followed after he attempted to shoot Mrs Jonas during August, this year. Mr Jonas has since then moved to Karibib and returned home on the night of the incident. On his arrival, Mr Jonas allegedly brought drinks for him and his wife. After a while Mrs Jonas started screaming that

she was poisoned by her husband. She was rushed to the hospital, but unfortunately there was nothing the doctors could do, as she was already dead by the time she reached the hospital. Mr Jonas appeared in the Swakopmund Magistrates court on Friday, 10 October, facing charges of murder and breaching of protection order. He was denied bail and is expected to appear in court again on 8 December this year.

Ship and Cargo agents involved in unlicensed activities

Obtaining Fishing

Permits

Marshallino Beukes

The Namibian Ports Authority sent out a stern warning to some Ship and Cargo Agents, who are supposedly involved in stevedoring activities for which they are not allowed or licensed for. The statement serves as a reminder to those involved in these activities, that as per the Port Regulations and the Namport Act, stevedoring companies should be li-

censed by the Namibian Ports Authority, and only those in possession of such a license is allowed to conduct and carry out stevedoring activities. It further warns that

Obtain a permit from the Namibian Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources (MFMR) to catch fish or dive for crayfish and respect harvesting limitations.

those who are found carrying out such services without the necessary license will be stopped permanently from carrying out any activities in the Port.

WHY? The marine resources are limited and currently some of them are overfished or over collected. It is necessary that everybody uses them wisely and carefully to secure the future harvesting needs by protecting the stock. Quantity/number of marine resources harvestable, minimum size limits of fish and crayfish that can be caught, open season etc. help to manage stocks to avoid the total disappearance of some species in our waters. Do not leave bait or fish on the beach! Either take it home or return it to the sea. This food attracts scavengers like jackals and gulls that prey on other bio-diversity. When you are back home after the holiday, it also inflates the predator population. Where can you get a license for angling, crayfish diving & bait/mussels collection?

Lagoon a favourite for bird lovers and photographers

While the coastline of Namibia is well known for its diamonds, wide open spaces and unspoilt nature, the birds at the Walvis Bay lagoon is as much a gem as any birder or photographer could possibly wish for.

Tourists from France were interviewed while they were busy taking pictures of the flamingoes at the lagoon and according to them it was one of the highlights of their twoweek tour through Namibia. Even if you are not a bird watcher, you cannot help but be impressed by the sheer number of

Oscar sentenced

Oscar Pistorius, South African athlete on trial for the death of his girlfriend, has been Ek neem aan is weer my sentenced to five years behind bars for culpable homicide and three years suspended for bure se kinders wat buite speel, en ek gee dit nie shooting a gun in a restaurant. Matilde Thuli-Mekondjo Silas Kulo: 5 years sentence to this guy is an insult to humanity. Herry Dimitri De Jesus: Pathetic judgement! Really Miss Masipa? People get 20 to 15 years for rape and so on! Marinda Van Coller Meyer: Belaglik!

Lynette Keyser: Cattle thieves get longer sentences... this is terrible. 5 years, what’s that for

killing another human being! Peter Baron Van Ginkel: 8 years in Namibia for fraud, 5 years for murder in SA. Lekker, man lekker. Barbara Anne Morrison: That is too short for taking a life! Thank the Good Lord I’m not the judge.

Pretorius’ dogs again in controversy

A nine year old boy was admitted to the hospital on Sunday, afternoon after being brutally attacked and suffering more than 20 bite marks from dogs owned by Walvis Bay resident, Logan Pretorius.

Adri de Wee: Would his age even have helped him against the dog? The boy could have been killed and all you worry about is his age. You’re surely a clown. Beulah Pretorius: Adri and surely you must be the ring master! Read well before being sarcastic! Tanja Strong: The age of

the boy is irrelevant. Fact remains; someone was brutally attacked by dogs, in the street. The owner needs to take responsibility. Uta Himmel: Any dog that does this should be put down and the owners banned from having pets. Obviously they failed to raise these dogs right. This is just awful, should

someone be killed before action gets taken? Why weren’t the dogs removed the first time they attacked minors (children)? Kirsti Westerdale: The dogs should be taken away from this guy! He obviously has no idea on how to look after them. Fernando Santos Dentlinger: I raised my dogs

proper yet when provoked will attack I witness kids the same age as the boy attacked walk pass my yard and tease my dogs to the point where my dogs get angry and open the gate. Adri de Wee: Kids will always be kids... Keep your damn dogs in your yard period. American copy cats.

Camm finally sentenced The long-dragging fraud cases against Allen John Camm finally reached a crescendo, after he was sentenced to eight years imprisonment, of which 2 years are suspended for five years. Denise Van Bergen: So he serves more time than Oscar! Tammy-Ann Klein-

smith Mouton Carballo: Denise my husband just said the same thing.... justice system in

Africa is a JOKE.

No more helicopter rides in December LOL.

Who Owns Namibia?

In line with the election theme of the Republican Party, namely: “The time is now,” party president, HenkMudge, during his election campaign in the South of our country, hit hard at what he termed, “the ruling party’s increased propensity to claim Namibia for themselves as a form of ‘just,’ but decidedly undeserved reward.” “When our beloved country finally gained its independence after a bitter struggle, there was a sense of relief coupled with vigor among all peoples to make the country work. This is evidenced by the drafting and acceptance of our national Constitution in a record time – a Constitution that is still hailed by the rest of the world as a model of its kind.” According to Mudge, our Constitution spells it out loud and clear. “Namibia belongs to all its people irrespective of race, colour, age, sex, social standing or political affiliation. Our Constitution is a social contract which guarantees the human dignity of all Na-

mibians.” “However, it is sad to see these lofty ideals go up in the tyre smoke of the new luxury vehicles of the ruling elite.” Mudge stated that over the past 24 years, it is glaringly obvious that the ruling party has become increasingly arrogant in their approach to governing the country. “The ruling elite are a tightly knit group of individuals who are appropriating the country and its resources to feed their own greed and lust for power. Thus in an era where we see increased unemployment, especially among the youth, housing shortages, declining health care, endemic corruption, blatant nepotism and fa-

vouritism, poor service delivery and faltering land reform, the ruling elite decide that what the country needs most than anything else is another VIP jet, a new parliament building, a private hospital for local VIP’s and visiting dignitaries, an enlarged parliament with yet more officials, a new fleet of luxury vehicles, an exorbitantly expensive retirement home for the outgoing president and “security upgrades for the dwellings of our rulers, to name but a few. Thus we also see the awarding of bursaries for the children of high ranking government officials to study in China and the “empowerment” of the children

of high ranking Swapo officials, as exposed in “The Namibian” of Friday 10 October” enabling them to become overnight millionaires with little effort and input. “True to the saying: ‘Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely,’ the ruling party has become completely out of touch with the feelings, aspirations and needs of the common people.” In a country with such a wealth of resources and such a low population density as ours, problems such as a lack of school facilities in rural areas and the acute housing shortage experienced by the less fortunate, should have and could have

been resolved many years ago, if the ruling party had been serious about addressing these issues,” Mudge claims. The problem is exacerbated by the appointment of persons to senior positions in accordance with political affiliation rather than qualifications, expertise and experience. “This tide of expropriating the entire country by our rulers for their sole benefit must be stemmed and the forthcoming election presents a golden opportunity for disillusioned voters to express their dissatisfaction on the ballot paper,” Mudge concluded. Media release by the Republican Party

oor hoe hul hul hond moet hanteer, beskerm, ens. Miss Namibia opens new Standard Bank account in home town Miss Namibia 2014, Brumhilda Ochs, opened a new Standard Bank savings account in her home town, Okahandja, this week. This is the first time in the history of Standard Bank’s involvement in the Miss Namibia Pageant that the reigning beauty decided to open the Basic Blue Account outside Windhoek, and more specifically, in her home town. “For Miss Namibia,

this account will be of great use to her, as she continues with her medical studies at the University of Namibia this year. As a student we believe this account will help you engage into formal banking and become financially empowered,” said

Standard Bank’s Head of Marketing, Thaddius Maswahu. As part of the sponsorship an additional N$5 000 has also been placed into Miss Namibia’s new bank account. Okahandja Mayor, Valerie Aron, thanked Standard Bank Na-

mibia for its ongoing commitment to corporate social responsibility through the Miss Namibia Pageant, and especially in view of empowering young women like Brumhilda Ochs. “Savings are an ideal way for you to meet your financial needs

Siblings taking the acting scene by storm Piquet Jacobs

Rodelio (19) and Whilzhan Lewis (20) are paving a glamorous road of success for themselves, representing Walvis Bay on the planks of the National Theatre of Namibia (NTN) and all around the country. The brother and sister, who both grew up in Walvis Bay, have always had a passion for drama and being on stage. They surely have not allowed time to pass them by without grabbing the spotlight. Rodelio was one of the lucky few artists to make it through to the Top 8 of the Trustco Star Performer Talent Competition in 2013. He was the only drama contestant that made it through to the Top 8 and was to represent Namibia at the Applause Rising Talents Showcase (ARTS) convention in Orlando, Florida, USA.

He has since been seen in his first NTN role on the Main stage in the “Lammie Beukies” production, and then along with his sister Whilzhan in “Prime Colours,” which was performed at NTN Backstage. The sibling duo again took on the stage together with the performance of “Colgate”, a Hugo Productions roadshow which travelled to the northern part of the country. One of his most recent performances were in “The Illusions of Grandeur,” a 3 play production; “The Winning story,” “Interviews with Loneliness” and “The Bear” respec-

tively, performed in one night. Rodelio will be attending The Namibian Theatre and Film awards on Saturday in the capital city, where he has been nominated for Best Newcomer and Best male actor, for his performances in “Prime Colours”. Through his busy schedule, Rodelio has still found the time to give back to the community by investing time in CANSA and Shavathon charity events, along with being involved in shack fire round-ups to collect donations for shack fire victims. Whilzhan is a dedicated

UNAM student, trying to make name for herself. She performed in “Bald Soprano,” a Theatre Zone Production directed by Michelle Namases, who has been nominated for Best Director, at NTN Backstage. She also performed along with her brother in “Colgate” and “Prime Colours”. Then came her big break by playing a role in her first film, “Katutura” by Florian Schott. She also took the stage in the “Wize-up” and “Mwenyopaleka” roadshows in the North in cooperation with O&L and Laurinda Olivier-Sampson.

Rodelio performing in The Illusions of Grandeur along with Lize Ehlers She also invested time in the Dream Big campaign with the Namibian Police. There is no doubt that the

future will only be brighter for the clearly talented brother and sister, with their hard work and dedication to their careers

as proudly Namibian actors. They both serve as inspiration to our youth of Walvis Bay.

WALVIS BAY

Rinus Henery created a classic car's image from metal

in different form Madelaine Laubscher A local resident have been conveying his passion for art in an unusual and unique way by creating all kinds of portraits out of steel and other metals. Walvis Bay has quite a number of artists involved in music, painting or writing. However, Mr Rinus Henery (31) has brought art to the coast in a different way. He spends his time making portraits out of metal, mostly steel. He grew up at the coast and has recently moved back to Walvis Bay after living on a farm in Namibia. He remarked that his passion for this particular art form has developed since living on the farm and being interested in steel and metal work while being surrounded by nature. According to him, since selling his work at an expo in Windhoek in July this year, the interest in his work has grown tremendously. “My inspiration grew while I was surrounded by nature and wild animals. I was always interested in working with

steel or metal thus I decided to do something different with these materials. I have been creating art pieces out of metal by free-hand. It can be used in the garden, a lapa, or for all sorts of interior decorating. I also give treatment against rust therefore it is quite suitable for the coast. It has a five to ten year guarantee against rust. I simply love what I do. It is very pleasing to know that my work is well-liked,” he said. He started out approximately three years ago with a partner, but according to him he has been working solo for the past eight months. “I definitely see myself going further in what I do. My target market involves lodges, hotels and bed and breakfast facilities. Individuals are also welcome to bring any ideas of what they would

Locker vom Hocker Schöner Caprivi alias Sambesi

Hier sieht man

Mitt-

Bank Windhoek Senior Golf Competition Rossmund Golf News

Last week Thursday the senior golfers had their first Bank Windhoek sponsored golf day on the Rossmund Golf Course, outside Swakopmund. The competition drew 16 players and it is sure to grow in popularity in the months to come. This is a golf competition with a difference, as the players are drawn into two teams and every player must then go and make as many stableford points for his team. As it turned out the competition was very closely contested with the run-

ners up accumulating 185 points and the winning team of Nicky, Flip, Frik, Francois, Piet, Tim, Dieter and Achmet accumulating 193 points. The best individual score for the day was played by Achmet Abrahams with 41 points and second was

Attie Esterhuizen with 37 points. Unfortunately Attie was drawn in the losing team. A very special thanks to Riaan van Rooyen and Paul Schrader from Bank Windhoek for their generous sponsorship.

Erongo Powersave Street Mile draws hundreds of runners

The results are as follows:

The Erongo Powersave Street Mile drew almost 600 athletes to Omaruru on Saturday. Well-known names in the senior category were Beate Naigambo, Siglinde !Gontes, Selma Ekandjo, Salomon David and Rainhold Thomas. This was the second edition of the 1.6 kilometre road run, which started at the town last year. Although the weather conditions were a little windy, the athletes per-

formed well and the hundreds of spectators could feast their eyes on some good running. One of the organisers of the event, Erongo regional director of sports Berthold Karumendu told Nampa after the event he is “more than happy” with how it turned out as he has a vision for the town and for sport in general.

“I’m telling you the race will grow. Almost 600 athletes entered for this year’s Erongo Powersave Street Mile,” he said. Karumendu said he is convinced that there are a lot of undiscovered talented athletes in Namibia. One such athlete who took part in Saturday’s race was from a rural area close to Omatjete

in the Erongo Region. “Hans Bee, a San boy from the Kangwe Primary School in the Erongo Region came first in the primary boys category. I want to call on the business community to come on board and invest in athletes like this,” he said. Bee, who ran the race without running shoes, completed the street mile

in a time of five minutes and 16.02 seconds (5:16:02), finishing more than three seconds before the second athlete. “The boy showed us the talent is there. He has a future, but the community must invest in him to help him grow,” he said. Tuulikki Martin from the Omaruru Town Council commended the organisers and athletes. “This street mile put Omaruru, the region and

Namibia on the sports map,” Martin said. Government provided transport for some of the athletes from as far as Opuwo and Aranos. The event was made possible by sponsors like Coca-Cola, Marathon Sugar, First National Bank Namibia, and Powersave. Besides the medals, the participants also received cash prizes varying between N$700 and N$3 000. ~ NAMPA

FNB Namibia joins hands with NTTA for Inter School Championship

FNB Namibia has sponsored N$ 15 000 to the Namibian Table Tennis Association (NTTA) for hosting this year’s event of the Table Tennis Inter-School Championships which is scheduled to take place on Saturday, for the first time in the Hardap Region. This was announced on Wednesday. “We have worked with the NTTA over the last couple of years and we are proud to be associated with them. We hope that we can build on this relationship”, said Ingrid Goeieman, FNB Manager for PR and Sponsorship. Goeieman urged the NTTA to further expand this event in the future to the different regions and schools. The inter-school championship is one of the NTTA’s prime youth development events. The competition is an annual event which takes place at a different venue each

year. This year the championships are taken to Stampriet in the Hardap Region. This small town is home to some of the finest and most committed young table tennis athletes in Namibia and it made a lot of sense to host it in their home town. Close to 40 youngsters from ten different schools have confirmed their participation. They will battle it out in the girls and boys division. Despite being a first for Stampriet, a very exiting competition is expected with no clear favorites. Spectators and players

alike can look forward to very competitive table tennis. The participating schools are: Elnatan Privaat Skool, Rehoboth High School, Mariental High School, M&K Gertze, Ruimte Primary School, Dr Lemmer High School, Vooruitsig Primary School, Holy Cross Convent and DHPS Private School. “We would like to thank FNB Namibia for their kind sponsorship. This money will help us a lot in hosting a successful Inter-School Championships,” a delighted NTTA chairman, Reinhardt Stanley, said

after receiving the sponsorship. Updates and results of the competition will be posted throughout the day on the Namibia Table Tennis Association Facebook page for all supporters who will not be able to travel to Stampriet to see the event live. Schools that would like table tennis to be introduced as a sport activity are encouraged to contact the NTTA. The contact details are: info.ntta@gmail.com or call the development officer, Roger Beukes at 081 157 5171.

Ope pool toernooi die naweek Marshallino Beukes

Bobby aiming high Sharlien Tjambari

Bobby Jo Bassingthwaighte, a Namibian ultra swimmer is aiming for the African Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming. “Poaching of rhino, elephant, lion and pangolin is on the increase in Namibia and we need to raise awareness” said Bobby. By attempting this extreme swimming venture, “with the campaign called Strokes for Earth, we aim to not only raise awareness globally but also to raise funds for antipoaching measures and combating wildlife crime in Namibia” she quoted. Bobby has crossed the 45 km English Channel in 1999 within 13 hours and 51 minutes, swam around Manhattan Island in the USA and swam from Catalina Island to Mainland California. For the African Crown she crossed the 16.7 km Strait of Gibraltar and completed the swim within three

hours and 53 minutes, on 9 October this year. Next year Bobby and two other Namibian ladies, Sandy le Roux from Swakopmund and Anita Vermeulen from Windhoek, will attempt a two way crossing of the English Channel, that’s from England to France and back again, in one go. This will be a first in the record books and they will also be the first Namibian team to swim the English Channel. The Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming includes three of the most well-known marathon swims, 34 km across the English Channel, 32.3 km between Catalina Island and the mainland in Southern California, USA, and 45.9 km around the Manhattan

Island in New York City, USA. The crown has been achieved by one South African male swimmer and a total of 86 swimmers before. The African Triple Crown is simply a geographical difference from the original Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming, except that to complete this crown the swimmer needs to swim around Manhattan Island. In 2016 Bobby will swim from Catalina Island to Mainland California. This is a 33km swim and also the final leg of the African Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming. Once successful Bobby will be the first African Female to achieve this and give her entry into the elite club of less than

one hundred people globally to achieve this. There are many people out there raising funds for good causes but what puts this project on a different level is that these three swimmers are tackling extreme challengers which few people dare to try. “We welcome all donations both big and small and should there be any company out there that believes in our vision and would like to come on board then they may contact us,” said Bobby. You can reach them on their facebook page called Strokes for Earth or through Bobby on 081 296 0252. The core of their initiative drives from Bojos Café in Swakopmund.
