SCHOOL NEWS

25 AUGUST 2015

One hundred and ten learners gathered at Namib High School from 17 to 21 August 2015 for the 5th Mathematics Spring School which was once again organised with the financial support of Langer Heinrich Uranium (Pty) Ltd. The Spring School prepares Grade 12 and 10 learners for the high stakes external examinations in Higher, Extended and Additional Level mathematics. The motto was “The only way to learn mathematics, is to do th mathematics” (Paul Halmos, 20 century mathematician) and the 2015 group of learners lived up to the expectations. Every morning they focused for 4 hours on applying their mathematical knowledge to a variety of applications and problems.

Early yesterday morning, in misty Swakopmund, some 230 people gathered at the parking lot next to the Swakopmund Tennis Club, not far from where the New Strand Hotel Swakopmund is taking shape. They have been chosen from more than 15 000 applicants, mainly from Namibia but also globally. Some followed the Coming Home Campaign, invented by Thomas Müller, the General Manager Marketing & IT of O&L Leisure. The vast majority of the new team members are Namibians or even from the coast, and for the next month they’ll be part of an intensive 30 session training program, overseen by some of the very best trainers and hotelliers, many internationally acclaimed. The namib times was witness to "this very significant moment in the history of Swakopmund and Namibia." Today we’ll have the opportunity to go behind the curtain, and share a glimpse of the unique and exciting induction program compiled by Bruce Hutchison, Managing Director and Thomas Müller. Family members, friends, colleagues and fellow Namibians are gathering at the Safari Hotel in Windhoek today, to remember those who have perished in the E Med Res 24 Namibia air ambulance crash on Sunday, 16 August. Alfred John Ward, Amore Espag, Charmaine Koortzen Gabriel le Roux and Steven Naude died when the air ambulance crashed some 12 kilometers from the Cape Town International Airport.

Prime Minister, Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila, was personally at the opening of the workshop, and expressed her deep concern over human trafficking. “We firmly believe that trafficking in human persons undermines our collective effort to end exploitation, oppression, abuse and equality. It must therefore be hunted wherever it manifests itself and be defeated,” said Kuugongelwa-Amadhila. She said the observation of the United Nations World Day against Trafficking in Persons on 30 July 2014 provided a much-needed opportunity to further raise awareness of the scourge of people trafficking. “The sad truth about the cruel acts of human trafficking is that they mainly affect the most vulnerable amongst us - children and women. The worst however, is that trafficking perpetrators often escape detection and thus do not bear the conContinues on page 2
