One hundred and ten learners gathered at Namib High School from 17 to 21 August 2015 for the 5th Mathematics Spring School which was once again organised with the financial support of Langer Heinrich Uranium (Pty) Ltd. The Spring School prepares Grade 12 and 10 learners for the high stakes external examinations in Higher, Extended and Additional Level mathematics. The motto was “The only way to learn mathematics, is to do th mathematics” (Paul Halmos, 20 century mathematician) and the 2015 group of learners lived up to the expectations. Every morning they focused for 4 hours on applying their mathematical knowledge to a variety of applications and problems.

Early yesterday morning, in misty Swakopmund, some 230 people gathered at the parking lot next to the Swakopmund Tennis Club, not far from where the New Strand Hotel Swakopmund is taking shape. They have been chosen from more than 15 000 applicants, mainly from Namibia but also globally. Some followed the Coming Home Campaign, invented by Thomas Müller, the General Manager Marketing & IT of O&L Leisure. The vast majority of the new team members are Namibians or even from the coast, and for the next month they’ll be part of an intensive 30 session training program, overseen by some of the very best trainers and hotelliers, many internationally acclaimed. The namib times was witness to "this very significant moment in the history of Swakopmund and Namibia." Today we’ll have the opportunity to go behind the curtain, and share a glimpse of the unique and exciting induction program compiled by Bruce Hutchison, Managing Director and Thomas Müller. Read all about it in Friday’s edition More pictures on Page 13

Family members, friends, colleagues and fellow Namibians are gathering at the Safari Hotel in Windhoek today, to remember those who have perished in the E Med Res 24 Namibia air ambulance crash on Sunday, 16 August. Prime Minister, Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila, was personally at the opening of the workshop, and expressed her deep concern over human trafficking. “We firmly believe that trafficking in human persons undermines our collective effort to end exploitation, oppression, abuse and equality. It must therefore be hunted wherever it manifests itself and be defeated,” said Kuugongelwa-Amadhila. She said the observation of the United Nations World Day against Trafficking in Persons on 30 July 2014 provided a much-needed opportunity to further raise awareness of the scourge of people trafficking. “The sad truth about the cruel acts of human trafficking is that they mainly affect the most vulnerable amongst us - children and women. WINDHOEK, 24 AUG – Namibia is one of the countries with a notably strong and flourishing parliamentary democracy in Africa - if not in the whole world, with a National Council (NC) that complements the National Assembly (NA) in the law making process. Chairperson of the NC, Asser Kapere made this remark during the launching of the Parliamentary Support Programme video, ‘A catalyst for Namibian Leadership’ on Monday. The video depicts and enhances the understanding of the foundation of Parliament and National Assembly, and also educates Members of Parliament (MP) on issues of poverty eradication. The programme is funded by the European Union (EU) with over Euros 1.7 million (about N$26 million) since the year 2012 and the video is one of its many components. It seeks to strengthen the capacity of the NA and the NC to increase public accountability for the purpose of greater engagement by Parliament

in poverty reduction programmes. According to Kapere, a well sourced parliament – be it resource wise or intellectually, will with no doubt contribute towards the transformation of the Namibian House into an institution that is responsive and accountable to the sovereign will and aspirations of the Namibian people. “Through programmes such as the Parliamentary Support Programme, we are once again reminded that through mutually beneficial partnerships, we can strengthen parliament to carry its mandate effectively and efficiently for the benefit of the electorates,” he noted. In order to execute effectively and meaningfully, the law-making process

Sharing Memories amidst Many Unanswered Questions Continued from page 1

On Sunday the family of Amore Espag, one of the pilots on the flight, held a private memorial service for her. Yesterday at 11:00 a private service was held at E Med Rescue for the other pilot, Steven Naudé. Today’s service brings together the all the victims’ families, friends and colleagues – and anyone from the general public who would want to attend, the CEO of the Prosperity Group and E Med Res 24 Namibia, told namib times earlier. When we spoke to him yesterday, he confirmed that he had been informed that the awaited investigation report, had seemingly been held back, and would be released later than expected.

Struwig says more than a week after a Namibian air ambulance crashed near Cape Town, many questions in the hearts and minds of those near to the five victims remain unanswered. Struwig, late yesterday said they were still trying everything within their power to get access to the the recordings of the last conversations between the air ambulance pilots and the airport control room. He says several critically important questions about the circumstances surrounding the tragedy will remain unanswered until they have gained access to the conversations. Struwig says, one of the incidents haunting them at this stage, is the fact that

the control tower phoned THEM to find out “if WE knew where our plane was, and that AFTER it had already crashed.” Seemingly, a NOTAM or NoTAM (Notice to Airmen), ‘a notice filed with an aviation authority to alert aircraft pilots of potential hazards along a flight route or at a location that could affect the safety of the flight’ about the radar problems that they had experienced, was only filed an hour and a half after the air ambulance crash, and not 24 hours earlier. Were it sent out earlier, a warning would have been generated and circulated. ‘NOTAMs are created and transmitted by government agencies and airport op-

erators under guidelines specified by Annex 15: Aeronautical Information Services of the Convention on International Civil Aviation (CICA). Aviation authorities typically exchange NOTAMs over AFTN circuits.’ Struwig says they want to know if the radar screens in the control tower were working that morning, because they have heard rumours that the flight-data processor had become dysfunctional on the Saturday night. “We also want to know exactly which co-ordinates were given to the pilots, as they came in on a VOR – Visual Orientation Approach – that would only happen in South Africa, if

and when the Radar systems were down. We know the plane prepared for a VOR landing, as the pilot of a Boeing, one of at least eight other planes that were already on a holding block, heard the conversation and the instructions. We have to know exactly what the instructions entailed. They can stall, they can try to sidestep, we’ll get the truth – the truth will out!” Struwig says, if the South African Aviation Authorities do not give them access to the voice recordings, they will ask the Namibian Civil Air Authority to request a copy of the recordings, or would even approach the President of Namibia, Hage Geingob, if necessary.

He says since the disaster the E Med Rescue 24 Namibia team has done 13 evacuations. They are in the process of acquiring a new Hawker 400 XP Jet that will be doing all the evacuation flights to South Africa. The namib times also spoke to Terence Ward last night – he and his family were with Struwig and his wife when we called. He confirmed that two memorial services will be held for their son, Alfred John Ward – One on Wednesday evening at 19:00, in the ESK (Evangeliese Sendingkerk) in Vrede Rede Street, Tamariskia, and another one on Friday evening at 19:00 in the same church.

Huge Amounts donated for Walvis Bay Mayoral Relief Fund Liesl Losper

More than N$400 000 was raised for the Walvis Bay Mayoral Relief Fund at a fundraising dinner on Saturday evening. Approximately 250 guests attended the event at the Walvis Bay Town Hall. Some of the biggest pledges were made by Erongo -Red (N$10 000), EBH (N$30 000), Safland (N$21 000), Namport (N$20 000), Walvis Bay Salt Refineries (N$20 000), and the businessman Mr John Savva and his wife, Roula, who pledged N$50 000 this year. “It is encouraging to see people getting together in an effort to contribute whatever it is that they can contribute towards the betterment of the conditions of living of others. This is clearly what the principle of UBUNTU calls for. As human beings capable of empathy towards others, we do not draw comfort from living lavish lifestyles while the rest of our countrymen and women are gripped by hunger hopelessness and despair. As such tonight's evening is

taking place not only as a platform for networking and socialising or an opportunity to enjoy delicious meals and quenching our thirst with our drinks of choice. We are here to pause for a second and think about the poorest of our community and take action by digging in our pockets or reaching for our cheque books and answer their plights through donations to the Mayoral Relief Fund,” the mayor commented in her speech. The mayor also expressed her gratitude to all the donors of last year, whose contributions has met a growing need in the community. She said that most of the funds were generated last year were used for financial assistance to people that lost their homes and personal possessions in shack fires, especially school uniforms and books for those children. They also contributed to ambulance services for the less fortunate,

They assisted a man who needed a facial operation by paying for his accommodation and other expenses and they have assisted a lot with reading specs for the visually impaired. People get access to this fund by filling out a form at the municipality together with a report from the police. The mayor said “We

assist all those that knock at the door for help.” At the traditional auction, paintings, bottles

of wine, cameras, a set of freshwater pearls and an ancient mirror from India, were auctioned. The mayor also

expressed her delight at the overwhelming response, to those who attended the function. She also thankd those

who could not be there in person, but who made their contributions through pledges and commitments.

The remains of one of the 26 shacks gutted by fire at Walvis Bay where about 100 people are left homeless and have no food after their shacks were destroyed by the blaze, apparently caused by a faulty power switch

Shack fire on Friday when one shack was destroyed

Shack fire victims to benefit from Mayoral fund Mavourlene !Gaës The Mayor of Walvis Bay hosted her annual Mayoral Gala Dinner on Saturday at the Civic Centre and said some of the money she collects from the dinner will go to the shack fire victims.

According to Nambahu, the Mayoral Relief Fund last year donated over N$740 000 in blankets, food and building materials to the shack fire victims. She added that the reason for her sharing the figures is to create transparency and also to encourage oth-

er business owners and individuals to support the initiative. Last week almost 30 households were left homeless and with no clothes or blankets and the children left without school uniform or school books. The parents of such learn-

ers have been left distraught and are pleading for help in the form of donations of any kind. Parents of about 20 children who lost school uniforms and books in a blaze that destroyed 26 shacks are appealing for assistance from the pub-

lic to replace the items. “Our children keep asking us when and how they will get new uniforms and books. We tell them that we will buy it soon but the truth is we do not have the money to do so,” said Selma Haule, one of the fire victims.

Last week Tuesday 26 shacks burnt to the ground in Kuisebmond’s Namport area with the cause of the fire suspected to be a faulty electrical plug and is still being investigated; there was also another fire on Friday where one shack burnt to the ground.

A house, which was surrounded by the shacks, was also completely destroyed by the fire. Swapo Party coordinator for the Erongo Region, Philipus Heita on Friday visited the victims and donated food such as rice, macaroni, maize meal,

sugar, cooking oil and fish. “When I heard about it I felt sorry for the people and decided to give the little I have from my own pocket. We will continue to solicit help for them,” Heita said. Additional info: NAMPA

Community Affairs Officer Sergeant Ileni Shapumba writes for us: “Be cautious, Counterfeit money in circulation again” We want to warn our business owners, retailers, and all outlet owners to be on the lookout for counterfeit or fake money. Criminals have again started using this method to buy items at your shops. They mostly use N$200 notes to buy a few items from the shops as they expect change in return, and in this manner get rid of the fake money. To get clarity on exactly what counterfeit money entails, see section 2 of the Prevention of Counterfeiting of Currency Act, 1965 ( Act 16 of 1965). It is clearly stated under regulation 25 of Part IV of the Bank of Namibia Act 15 of 1997.

Many culprits were arrested recently, and the Police is calling upon the members of the public to help us in finding the persons who are producing and supplying this fake money so that we can apprehend them. We also want to warn the public about the increase in numbers of other opportunists who are misrepresenting Natis officials. They cheat people out of their money promising

them driver’s licenses. In one scenario, opportunists would stand in the queue at Natis offices and copy relevant particulars of the applicants, such as the names and contact numbers. When you submit your application, a person will then call you pretending to be a Natis officer. He will then request you to pay a certain amount of money, which you must either deposit in a certain account

or place in an envelope and drop it somewhere at the corner of the Natis Building. Immediately after having paid the money, the cellphone no the used to communicate with the victim, becomes unreachable. Sometimes, desperate aspiring license holders ask each other to be referred to a well-known Natis officer or a well-connected person who can facilitate the process without difficulties.

A person will then be referred, from one person to another and at the end of the chain, this person will be asked to pay money that in most cases our people are always prepared to pay. There is no benefit in acquiring a licence behind doors, or by means of a shortcut. Acquiring a license with little driving experience is dangerous on the road. If one has enough money to pay to avoid cor-

Clove oil allegedly causes death

WINDHOEK, 23 AUG (NAMPA) – A 28-year-old soldier collapsed at his home and was declared dead upon arrival at the Walvis Bay State Hospital on Saturday. The Erongo Police are now investigating the incident which happened at the Tutaleni residential area. The deceased was identified as Moses Witbeen, a member of the Namibian Defence Force at the coastal town. Namibian Police Force (NamPol) Inspector Slogan Matheus said during a media briefing here on Sunday that the deceased was drinking at this residence with some friends when he apparently took Lennon Clove oil and drunk it. The deceased then started vomiting and collapsed. The homeopathic oil is believed to help to relieve toothache and flatu-

lent colic. In another incident, the Windhoek Police are investigating a case of armed robbery and assault after a 46-year-old Chinese national was held at gunpoint on Saturday evening at his residence along Riethaan Street in the Pionierspark residential area. It is alleged suspects entered the house, pointed a gun at the victim and demanded money and other valuables. The suspects fled the scene with two laptops, three mobile phones, a leather jacket and an un-

known amount of cash. The value of the items is estimated at N$160 000. Police investigations continue. Meanwhile, the Windhoek Police confiscated two parcels of cannabis and 10 mandrax tablets hidden inside clothes brought into a police station for a person in custody. The drugs were brought in by a family member of the man in custody. Police investigations continue. NAMPA

Obtaining Fishing

Permits

Obtain a permit from the Namibian Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources (MFMR) to catch fish or dive for crayfish and respect harvesting limitations. WHY? The marine resources are limited and currently some of them are overfished or over collected. It is necessary that everybody uses them wisely and carefully to secure the future harvesting needs by protecting the stock. Quantity/number of marine resources harvestable, minimum size limits of fish and crayfish that can be caught, open season etc. help to manage stocks to avoid the total disappearance of some species in our waters. Do not leave bait or fish on the beach! Either take it home or return it to the sea. This food attracts scavengers like jackals and gulls that prey on other bio-diversity. When you are back home after the holiday, it also inflates the predator population. Where can you get a license for angling, crayfish diving & bait/mussels collection?

Mayor proud of Namsov Mavourlene !Gaës

The Mayor of Walvis Bay, Uilika Nambahu expressed her pride towards Namsov Fishing Company for their continued contribution to the development of the country. She was speaking at a Fish Braai for the media hosted by Namsov at the Civic Centre yesterday morning. Nambahu said Namsov Fishing Company is demonstrating their continued investment in Walvis Bay and its people. “Social responsibility and social investment by companies in an effort to improve the lives of the people within the communities they do business, is not just the right thing to do morally, but it is an investment based on the social principle and philosophy that all institutions exists by public consent and further, that charity begins at home.” She added that being a coastal city, fishing is an integral part of Walvis Bay’s history and has remained, although not without challenges, a reliable economic

backbone of our existence since time immemorial. “As such, today’s event marks yet another milestone which demonstrates the power of this anchor sector and its potential to positively influence the lives of our people.” Nambahu says as a Council they take great delight and pride in efforts made by and continued to be made by companies such as Namsov, which have taken it upon themselves to continuously and religiously invest in Walvis Bay through job creation at a time when the country's employment rate is certainly declining from 28%. “It is through these and similar efforts that Namsov and other reliable part-

ners aid the disadvantaged members of our community, by giving them hope and dignity.” According to Nambahu, the Council has remained committed to ensuring a conducive environment for this sector of the economy to grow. She says it is through their healthy balance-sheets that enterprises are able to contribute to the revenue streams of Council through rates and taxes and consequently allowing the Walvis Bay Municipality to render quality services as mandated by the Local Authority Act, Act 23 of 1992. According to a statement made by Namsov Human Resources Manager, Edwin

Pleasant Surprise for Children in DRC Sharlien Tjambari

On Thursday, 20 August, the children of the DRC in Swakopmund received the surprise of their lifetime when a community member delivered boxes of clothes at the DRC Project School for the children. The lady who declined to be mentioned as she was doing it out of her heart and not for publicity, said she have been organising a charity project to gather second hand clothes for the children of the DRC for the last few months.

The project is called the Winter clothes Charity Project. “Many kids suffer from colds and flu because they are not kept warm enough, and I wanted to help reduce this by collecting second-hand clothes to distribute among

poor kids in Swakopmund” said the warm hearted lady, she placed donation boxes all over Swakopmund in May and June and secondhand clothing, as well as a few other items such as toys and toothbrushes were collected. On Thursday,

Over 70 children gathered at the DRC Project School last week Thursday Ms Dina Muningirua, the teacher at the DRC project School gathered the children and distributed the clothes among the children. The children were thrilled and so were their parents. There were over 70 children at the

Project School who each got a jersey, trouser, t-shirt, short pants etc. A few businesses like Monkey Puzzle Café, Cottage Family Practice, Spur George Ludwig Kinder garden, Ackermans and many more help her make

the project a success, donations also came from the community members as well. She also donated clothes to t h e Te a r s o f H o p e Orphanage home and the Shofar Church in Swakopmund was also

contacted for donation. According to the head of

Another Shack Fire in Walvis Bay The Acting Chief of the Walvis Bay Fire Brigade, Dennis Basson, has confirmed to namib times that only one shack/tuck shop was destroyed in a fire in Kilimandjaro str in Kuisebmond yesterday afternoon. There were no injuries. He also confirmed that the number of shacks destroyed on 18 August was indeed not 16, but it has been updated yesterday to a number of 26. Almost 100 people were left destitute when the fire destroyed those 26 shacks and also damaged one house in Kwilimba Street, Namport, around 3:30 Tuesday morning. Nobody was injured. Toni Timo Lange My holy macarrow, its realy time that government opens up the desert for urban development really....... Its becoming a problem now, and shacks should be illegal becaz the owners of that erfs gets + - 950 rent a month per shack add that up if u got about 5 to 7 shcks on

ur erf, that amounts up well enough to pay off his or her bank loan, the goverment could give small plots to families and let them pay that amounts off towards there own little plots..... Paa Asser Dengox O, God help people to have their own plots.

Frankie makes history again

Former Namibian track and field athlete Frank Fredericks has been selected to serve as a member of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) for four years. Fredericks, the only Namibian to have won four silver medals in the 100 metres and 200 metres at the Olympic Games (two in 1992 and two in 1996), made history again by becoming the first Namibian to be elected in the IAAF individual council members’ team. Edgar Jst Edgar It beats me that people in Namibia think they can run athletics better than this man. He has both the international connections and pedigree to be given carte blanche on athletics. Walther Dorn-Schnirring As a athlete he was good, but done nothing for Namibian athletics. Denise Van Bergen "Bakhand" mentality, Walther Dorn-Schnirring! Theodore Stanley He did his part. The rest is for other interest holders to do their’s. Walther Dorn-Schnirring Fact Denise... Justus Tetu Sinimbo His part was too inspire, and he did pretty it well. E Med Res 24 Namibia seeks answers The CEO of the Prosperity Group owning E Med Res24, has just told namib times that they’ve appointed a legal team to help them in their quest to get access to the last conversations on the black box of the air ambulance that crashed early Sunday morning (16 August) near Cape Town, killing the 5 people on board. Bertus Struwig says he is shocked and very disappointed with the way in which the Airport Authorities and the SA Minister of Transport have behaved the past week, and with the lack of transparency surrounding this disaster. He says they know that there’s been grave problems surrounding the radar systems at the airport during the time of landing, and they want to know exactly what transpired during those final fatal moments – Namib Times In a conversation with Bertus Struwig just now, he has explained that the black box of small aeroplanes per se, do not, like big planes, carry the conversations on the black box itself, but that every conversation is recorded in the control room of the Airport... Paul Prinsloo It is amazing how the people here are just assuming that the Cape Town ATCs are at fault here. The easy way out? Accident investigations take more than a week, people. And, lets be frank. Why is no one mentioning the fact that this might have been a human error... Andrea Dreyer Remember how the Windhoek Airport was declared ‹unfit› because of the bad condition of the runway? For CPT, this accident is certainly the most tragic event, but its not the first where the neglect and mismanagement of safety features of CPT airport is in the spotlight. I feel the international flight authorities should shut down CPT airport until they are truly functional again. Bertus Struwig The full report on the Helderberg plane crash nearly 30 years later is still due to be released - the truth always hurts but only the truth can help the families to deal with their hurt and sorrow. Bruno Shimuandi The more the South Africans cover and want to hide the truth then the more suspicious they’l look. They should know that this is a national tragedy for us. But I’m very sure that if their hands were clean they would of given us all the information a long time ago. They should not provoke us ‘cause surely there are other steps we

can take! Leonie Golder Its an embarrassing disgrace! I live in SA and am ashamed of our Government! Imms Abdul Karim Nashinge We and especially the families of the deceased ones deserve to know the truth and the cause of the fatal accident. Why withhold the recordings? Wht are they hiding? A luta continua indeed. Renée Hagg Hiestermann Stop blaming anyone or anything until the investigation is over and done with. Essentially the error found, be it human or technical, it won›t bring back those that have perished. Remember that in the end the pilots, the paramedic and ATC are professionals. An accident is exactly what it is. An accident. So hang onto all your horses, before playing the blame game. Linda Juanita Swanepoel They definately covering something up. Why.. in the first place refuse the people at rites to listen to the recorded conversation for the truth of what happened. The families and owner of res 24 are asking questions of how the accident happened. Hildie Viljoen-Du Toit If it was a technical fault we would have known by now. I think SA Authorities are afraid of law suits or that the airport might be shut down, that is why they are delaying the truth. Peter Kauluma Hatupopi South Africa must tell the truth at least in this case... what’s so hard to give us access to the conversation? What are they hiding? Please. Jan Campbell Guys dont crucify the south africans or south africa per say. It

COMMUNITY NEWS is the people in charge. It is not a ‘shithole’ like someone has said. Keep you panties on Gerhard... Pat Marry Paul Prinsloo can u lead the investigation plse coz u the only person here who is making sense to blame SA goverment for a plain crash coz of a delay in recordings sound so immature. Even Pilots wth many years of experience can coz accidents like ths. Pat Marry Where does politics fits in ths situation why not waiting for info frm blackbox b4 throwing all ur racist remarks on ths. Lifes were lost and here pple not blaming someone bt thrw ur racist remarks which will nt solve or bring the lifes back. Wht if the info on the blackbox shws an error in the engin or so im jst saying im a Namibian myself bt i jst wonder if ths blame game wud be played if it was a white goverment. Etienne le Roux So play open cards with SA and Name then we don't have to speculate. Them more SA tries to be silent them we will speculate! The government is so corrupt why would we belive any thing they say! What are you hiding. If it was human or tech let it be known. If it was the pilots they payed the ultimate price if it was airport/ATNS staff heads must roll. Peter Steenkamp the controller in that tower are not qualified to do that work, end of story! They should rather go and work as cleaners in the airport, when it comes to human lives we need professionals not political connected people. Mario Punzel Do not expect any helpfull assistance etc from the SA authorities. They will cover-up any mishap from their side! Magda Cooper I truely hope that the Namibian Authorities assist in this regard, we need to get this resolved and need to know what exactly happened during those last fatal moments. Jacque Jack Loteryman Very sad indeed. Probably the next they will say is that the recordings went missing. They must come to NAM, to see how a Government is run. Gerhard Mohrmann Report them to ICAO and let them lose their licence to opetate. SA is a sh.......... s9 sad, could be agreat country. The Rand has dropped from biying a US dollar for just 60c to now costing R12.50... Peter Steenkamp I would like to see the final findings of this disaster, a certain woman calling me stupid names, just wondering what she knows about aviation? Leigh Lelanie Pascheka Due to negligence and lack of ethnics, Namibia has lost three wonderful individuals who contributed greatly. SA you are a disgrace!

NAMIB TIMES99 NAMIB TIMES Eduard Storbeck looks like they have something to hide! Ilizma Muller Well said.SA you have explaining to do... Robin Tyson Wow - harsh words indeed! Pat Marry I wonder wht u will say if the accident was due to a technical fault on the plain itself jst wait for the info frm the blackbox b4 u blame SA Kyle William So what? Are we gonna point fingers at the SA government now like a bunch of 8-year olds? Honey Bora Saddest tradegy ever. I sincerely hope there will be a light at the end of the tunnel. Peter Steenkamp Conversation recordings have nothing to do with the radar out of order, there should be no reason to withhold that information, unless they already know that this accident was due to their negligence, which seems to be the case! Peter Steenkamp This is a disgrace for SA, no doubt, why withheld a conversation to determine what actually happened? I think some international air safety company should be called into this investigation! Bianca Henrichsen Who appoints these people to do this work? Chrisilda Rausch Agreed with Mario swept under the carpet as usual big question? Johan Roets Very true Bertus. In my almost two years here that's exactly my conclusion as well. Titus Van Bomel Drotzkie Rip to my fallow paramedics & patients my God bless you. Kalle Namkalle It is a Zuma country and a lot of idiots are working for him which don´t have any qualification just like Zuma he is just greedy and use less in SA. Rhoda Kings Times like these I hang my head in shame. Carel Liebenberg ACSA. Where is your explanation for this. You went offline without taking anyone in consideration. Kondjeni Nkandi Oh my goodness. How can they handle this matter with such disrespect? Unbelievable and very sad indeed. Herberdt Tsuob Yez brthr. Billy Shingo No prblm. Jacques Du Toit This is so sad. And to make things worse South Africa is involved and there authorities are useless. I really hope it all works out. Value addition of gemstones at Usakos means more money for miners The small-scale miners at the market usually sell raw stones to local and international buyers who will then cut, polish and turn them into finished products such as exquisite jewellery that reflects the wealth of the African country, but that is not the case anymore. After the opening of the workshop with gem cutting and polishing machines here on Tuesday, the miners are now able to sell value-added products and increase their income. The facility, together with solar panels given to the Arandis Dreamland Garden that same Tuesday, was sponsored by the Social Security Commission (SSC) with an amount of N$1.5 million. SSC Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Kenandei Kapara Tjivikua said during the

handing-over ceremony their contribution is intended to improve infrastructure at the market and allow vendors to meet the needs of both domestic and international tourists who visit the crystal market. Another reason is to address the socio-economic challenges faced by the small-scale miners at the market, he said. “I must say at this juncture that not only did we fund the value-addition workshop, but the SSC added another N$220 000 which went towards the construction of two non-flush toilets and an upgrade of the coffee shop,” said Tjivikua. The SSC CEO noted that the introduction of the gem-cutting workshop created 61 new jobs in addition to 42 jobs already in existence.

Speaking to Nampa about the workshop on Friday, Erongo Regional Governor Cleophas Mutjavikua said value-addition is very important as it creates more jobs and helps small businesses to generate more income. He noted that his office together with the ministry of Mines and Energy is working on introducing a vaulting and marketing agent for small-scale miners in the region. “This is to ensure that the miners are not robbed of their stones anymore as there will be someone to tell them the actual value. “Currently, there is daylight robbery by buyers because miners do not know the value of the stones, as such, one can sell a N$5 000-stone for N$500,” said the governor.

USAKOS, 22 AUGust - The introduction of the gemstone cutting and polishing workshop at the Ûiba-Ôas Crystal Market here will add value to the precious stones and enrich the lives of the miners.

USAKOS, earlier - A vendor at the Ûiba-Ôas Crystal Market Sylvia Pienaar-Maletzky pictured at her stall. The market is located at the Henties Bay-Usakos-Spitzkoppe T-junction along the B2

He also acknowledged the lack of water at the Ûiba-Ôas Crystal Market, saying very soon a pipe will take water from a borehole in the Sadamab village to the market. Sadamab is located some six kilometres west of the Ûiba-Ôas market. (NAMPA) PKS/LI/ND

Driven By Passion - Dancer Itta Writes for Us A 15-year-old pupil of the Private School Swakopmund, Itta Steinsträtter, was recently one of the dancers who represented Namibia at the World Dance Championships of Permorming Arts in Los Angeles. For her it was a dream come true to compete with the best in the world. Here she tells her story...

The Story of My Passion

When I was little I tried a lot of sports like horse riding, swimming and gymnastics, but I didn't do these sports for longer than two years because I lost interest. When I was six years old I got into school and met two girls who wanted to start with ballet, like almost every girl in that age. I then started with ballet classes and did that for three years. I didn't stop ballet because I lost interest, but because I found a poster saying Dance Week 2009, that was my first Dance Week and ever since that I didn't miss one. After the first Dance Week, Dance Factory opened. Now I'm dancing at Dance Factory – I have been doing that since 2009, and have been dancing for almost 10 years now. It is impossible for me to lose interest, dancing is a conversation between body and soul. It is my passion. I dance Contemporary, Jazz and Hip Hop mostly, but I can also do other styles, like Ballroom, Lyrical, Ballet, Bollywood and more. In October 2014 my dance partner and I auditioned for the World Championships of Performing Arts with a duet. We qualified for the Nationals which were from 1215 March this year. We were happy - we never ever expected that something like that would happen next. When we performed in Windhoek at the Nationals we got Gold and we got the prize for overall best duo. We thought, okay that is what we achieved and that's good but my partner and I got called up to be a part of the Namibian Team that was going to represent Namibia in Los Angeles at the World Championships of Performing Arts. Half an hour later I called my mom and told her I

Team Namibia in Los Angeles

was going to Los Angeles for the World Champs. She was happy for me, but then she her voice got serious and she asked who was going to pay, and I told her we would make a plan. When I was in Swakop again, things changed and I had to work hard. I chose 3 solos like my partner, because the total amount for travelling that would be needed, would else be for one duet and that was just not worth it. So, I had to choreograph 3 solos – with which my dance teachers supported me. But I did not only have the dancing of 2 to 4 hours every day – I also had school work to do. It was hard for me at first but I got into the routine quite well and got used to handling both things. I realised there wasn't any chilling time on my schedule it was dancing and school. If I wanted to go to Los Angeles, then I had to work for it. All of my free time that was normally spent with friends, turned out to be either devoted to dancing or studying. After a lot of work, the big journey was suddely a reality. I finished all my extra work from school and polished my dances a bit more. On 7 July, the big day dawned. I flew from Windhoek to Johannesburg to London to Los Angeles. We arrived at the hotel and it was stunning, I had the feeling of being in another world – it just felt so unreal - it couldn't be that I was in Los Angeles, Long

16 NAMIB TIMES Continued from page 15 Beach. It was amazing - I met so many passionate people and they were great and the best to be with. We went to see and experience a few tourist attractions of America, like the Walk of Fame, Madame Tussauds LA, Universal Studios and the famous Fashion District. Then the competition days started and it was a tough time. In most of the dancing age groups there where only 6 to 10 people taking part - sometimes even only one. But in my age group 20-36 people competed. It was hard to beat those high standards but I tried my best and a dream came true: I was dancing on stage in Los Angeles, representing my country, and I was proud of myself that I made it that far. Those dancers we saw, were amazing and so passionate. It was so beautiful to watch them

25 AUGUST 2015 losing and finding themselfs in the music and movement, and it looked and felt so familiar. The days past so swiftly, and I got a free dance class at the Millenium Dance Complex, the best of the best dance studios in the world. The experience to be part of that class was great and if dancing will be my future after school, they certainly would have helped me to take that step. I learned that you should always have challenge before you, otherwise you will never get better. We had a dance boot camp, where dance directors and teachers gave us lessons. It was very hard. Those directors and teachers danced for people like Britney Spears, How I met your Mother, and many more. Then medal awards came up. As I said, it was hard to beat those high standards, and I didn't get a prize - but it didn't matter to me. I'm so thankful and proud of what I achieved, I got on stage in Los Angeles – and to me that was somethng wonderful. These memories will always stay with me, every single minute was worth the hard work. Talking about work, when I left that great

place, back to London, to Johannesburg to Walvis Bay, it was back to school, and it was hard to pick up where I have left off, with some subjects. I realised I had lost valuable time in class and I had to deal with that, because I went to Los Angeles for 2-and-a- half weeks, just before the exams. I returned home a week before the exams started, and it wasn't ample time for me to catch up on the work I missed. I had to study and it wasn't easy! I didn't expect it to be easy, but this was just too much for me. I was stressed and didn't know where to start which just stressed me more and I got scared that I wouln't pass my exams. And that was my feeling after the first week of exams. But letting this once in a life time opportunity pass without grabbing it because of exams would have been in the truest sense of the words stupid. So, I gave it my best in the exams. I tried, and I worked hard, it is an achivement in life, and these memories will stay for a lifetime.

High Performance Culture Cossasa ball game team leaves for Zim for Cricket Namibia A Namibian team of 194 athletes and officials for the Confederation of Schools Sports Associations of Southern Africa (Cossasa) Ball Games depart for Bulawayo, Zimbabwe today (Tuesday). The Cossasa Ball Games is an annual event on the calendar of Southern African Development Community (SADC) schools. Five countries will compete this year in basketball, netball, football, tennis, rugby sevens and volleyball. They are Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia, Swaziland and Zimbabwe. South Africa will not take part because it does not have a school sports union, while Zambia will also not take part for specified reasons. The event caters for boys and girls aged under13 to u/17. Zambia hosted the event last year. The Namibian team of 194 athletes and officials will depart on Tuesday morning Speaking at the team's sending off ceremony held in the capital at Independence Stadium, Sports Commissioner at the Ministry of Sport, Youth and National Service, Ndeulipula Hamutumwa called on athletes to represent the country with pride. “Representing Namibia starts from the youth games and I am calling on you to be disciplined, because every great athlete in the world is first disciplined before hard work. I want you to be good

ambassadors of the country just like Frank Fredericks and Johanna Benson who made this country proud before,” he said. He further called on the corporate world to start funding sports in the country if Namibia is to become a sporting nation. “The Namibia Schools Sports Union (NSSU) is supporting Government's philosophy of no one should be left out as they have called up athletes from all over the country to represent us at the Ball Games this year. I am therefore calling on the corporate world to start coming on board and sponsor school sports events that can keep these children busy throughout the year and improve their performance when participating at international events,” stated Hamutumwa. It was announced at the same event that Namibia will be hosting the Cossasa Athletic Games in 2016 at Swakopmund. At last year's games in Zambia, Namibia ended third with three gold, four silver and five bronze medals. NAMPA

Under 19 Cricket prepares for Bangladesh World Cup Cricket Namibia and the University of Pretoria's High Performance Centre (HPC) have signed an agreement to help prepare Namibia's under-19 cricket team for the u/19 World Cup in Bangladesh in January 2016. This was announced at a media briefing in Windhoek on Friday. The HPC in Pretoria is an elite sports facility, which annually attracts international athletes and sporting bodies for training camps or specific team preparation. Cricket Namibia's Chief Executive Officer, Donovan Zealand said during the announcement that the aim of this partnership is part of Cricket Namibia's quest to improve the standard of local cricket and to create a high performance culture within all Namibian cricket teams. “This obviously is very good for us at Cricket Namibia because it affords us the opportunity to forge long-term relationships with centres of excellence like the HPC,” he noted. The three HPC specialists who will

conduct training for both the local players and technical team from August until January next year are, Pierre de Bruyn (head coach and director at Tuks Cricket); Helen Bayne (head biomechanist at the HPC); and Chris van Noordwyk (specialist bowling coach at Tuks Cricket). De Bruyn, who spoke on behalf of the specialists, said their contribution to the team is crucial in the development and preparation for the u/19 Cricket World Cup scheduled to take place in January 2016. “We see the importance of the u/19 Cricket World Cup and we have come well-prepared to make sure that we can grow these young men as well as the coaches because ultimately, coaches are the lea-ders,” he said.

Cricket Namibia President, Richard Frankle announced during the same briefing that national team coach Doug Watson's three-year contract, which will expire on 31 August 2015, will not be renewed. The Board of Cricket Namibia has endorsed the appointment of Dee Thakur as interim coach of the national team. Thakur has coached various aged groups including the u/19s as well as the A-side cricket team in the past and has vast cricketing experience, said Frankle. “His contract runs from September 2015 until January 2016. However, it is hoped that the search for a new national coach will be concluded by the end of November 2015,” he assured.

Welwitschias train with 'Boks for World Cup … but, 6 will stay behind The Namibian rugby squad of 36 will be reduced to 30 players ahead of the team's departure to England for the 2015 World Cup. The Namibia Rugby Union (NRU) this week announced a 36-member squad for a training camp with the South African national rugby team this week. The team has left for Durban, South Africa on Sunday for a two-week training camp used as additional preparation ahead of the World Cup in September. The team will face Argentina, Georgia, Tonga and New Zealand in it's group with World Cup's favourites, the All Blacks as first opponents. South Africa will play in the same group as Japan, Samoa, Scotland and United States of America. The South African camp is in addition to preparation games that Namibia's Welwitschias have already played thus far. Namibia beat Russia, Kenya, and Zimbabwe in various games played earlier

this year. The squad going to South Africa this weekend: Forwards: Johnny Redelinghuys, Jaco Engels, Rahul Larson, Casper Viviers, Aranos Coetzee, AJ de Klerk, Louis van der Westhuizen, Torsten van Jaarsveld, JG Wiese, Janco Venter, Tjiuee Uanivi, Jacques Burger, Wian Conradie, Leneve Damens, Tinus du Plessis, Rohan Kitshoff, Thomasau Forbes, Rezando Botes, Renaldo Bothma and PJ van Lill. Former Namibian track and field athlete Frank Fredericks has been selected to serve as a member of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) for four years.

Hester Neethling of Walvis Bay with three of the horses from South-Africa

Fredericks, the only Namibian to have won four silver medals in the 100 metres and 200 metres at the Olympic Games (two in 1992 and two in 1996), made history again by becoming the first Namibian to be elected in the IAAF individual council members’ team. Also in 2004 he became a member of the International Olympic Committee, while in 2009 he became the head of Athletics Namibia - a post he vacated in 2013.

The 2015 IAAF elective congress was held in Beijing, China from 18 to 20 August 2015. Speaking to Nampa on Thursday, Athletics Namibia Secretary-General Frank Slabbert said it is pleasing to see that Namibia is now also represented on the council. He said they believe this will usher in a new era for Namibian sport and look forward to close cooperation with the international body. NAMPA
