President Geingob calls on Namibians to unite as one

During the independence celebration in Swakopmund the president said, “32 Years ago, the world witnessed the birth of a nation as labour pains the long and bitter struggle for independence and the sacrifices paid in blood – were replaced by the ululation of a people freed from the shackles of colonial oppression, racism, and war”. Geingob further said, “indeed, today we celebrate 32 years of democracy, peace, stability, and unity. It is unity that drove this nation's gallant sons and daughters to bravely fight for our freedom. It is unity that has kept us together, through thick and thin, through good and bad times. It is unity that will take us towards realising the dream of prosperity.” President Geingob said it is understandable that the people want more because they have seen how far the country have come and rightfully believe that this nation can go further. “Indeed, we can, and together, we will. However, what is not understandable is the unreasonable assertion by some, that the days of racist, apartheid South Africa were better than those of post-independent Namibia. Also, it is incomprehensible and deplorable for some Namibians to claim that for the past 32 years, nothing has been achieved, therefore Namibians have no reason to celebrate independence. Such mindsets are not only unpatriotic but insulting to those who made immerse sacrifices in the quest for freedom. Our Independence Day is sacred and should be above our personal feelings and politics of the day”, said President Geingob.

Benguela Gem diamond recovery vessel and the largest on the Namibian vessel registry. The vessel was built with parts from 27 different countries, with some of the steelwork fabricated in Walvis Bay. This custom-designed vessel was built at the DAMEN shipyard in Romania and headed from Romania via Cape Town to Walvis Bay for the inauguration. It's expected that Benguela Gem will produce up to 500,000 carat diamonds annually and will generate revenue of up to N $ 3 billion per year. The Benguela Gem was inaugurated three months ahead of schedule and 17% under its initial budget, by His Excellency, President Hage Geingob, Minister of Mines and Energy, Honourable Tom Alweendo and De Beers Group CEO, Bruce Cleaver. Namibia President Dr Hage Geingob lauded this milestone as an "unbelievable investment” and a stellar example of private sector and government partnership. President Geingob said,“I am confident that the future of Namibia's mining sector remains bright and that it will continue to contribute to the developmental aspirations of the nation with investments such as the Debmarine mining vessel Benguela Gem being made”. “This vessel will be deployed to recover diamonds from the seabed safely, with due regard to our fragile marine environment. I am pleased to be informed that due regard for the environment is indeed the main consideration for the type of vessel procured for the sea mining operations of

Debmarine Namibia” the President said. Geingob added that the government will never advocate for reckless disregard of due process, including environmental due diligence and compliance with international best practice. “All we need, is that the science and empirical facts lead the evidence, not armchair critiques.” Minister of Mines and Energy Tom Alweendo said: “In a world where there is global competition for capital – and where capital has become increasingly mobile – it is most pleasing to see that we are able to witness the fruits of this fantastic investment. The investment in this vessel is not just an investment in a diamond recovery vessel. It is an investment in the future of Namibia.” Bruce Cleaver, CEO, De Beers Group, said: “The Benguela Gem is the first of its kind and represents an outstanding feat of engineering design, technology innovation and sustainability performance. The investment in this vessel will support a long term, sustainable future for Namibia's diamond sector, which is home to some to the most sought-after diamonds in the world.” Otto Shikongo, CEO, Debmarine Namibia, said: “As we gather here for the inauguration of this new vessel, just days before Namibia celebrates its 32 years of independence, bear testimony that we at Debmarine Namibia will continue to make our stakeholders proud by delivering real value for both our shareholders and the people of Namibia.”

President Geingob calls on Namibians to unite as one Continued from page 1

According to the President, patriotism, which is defined as love and defence of one's country, with all its inherent flaws and greatness, should inform the conduct of all Namibians. President Geingob further said, “this Independence Day, let us all commit, as one people, to unite for the prosperity of the Republic of Namibia. In this spirit, I recently invited all interested political parties to the State House to discuss the new economic opportunities in Namibia. I believe that securing the future of this country is not up to one President, one tribe, one race, or one gender; it is up to all of us as Namibians, hand in hand, to take our country forward.”

Paddock people cry out for an answers on continuous sewerage spills and poor clean-up Eileen van der Schyff attempts People residing in the Swakopmund paddock area are up in arms and now demand answers The paddock gardens next to the Platz am Meer Mall in Swakopmund once again flooded with wastewater, adding to the existing health problem and inconvenienced residents of the area, after the previous major wastewater spill (sewerage spill) on 4 February, which took weeks before any clean-up efforts, without any sanitation were attempted. The area was left with dried sewerage waste, blowing in the wind for about three weeks. Residents contacted the Namib Times out of desperation, after no success in getting answers out of the relevant authorities at the Swakopmund Municipality. “The Municipality seems to not understand the severity of the health hazard. I don't understand why a clean-up team from the North attempted to clean up. Do we not have cleaning services for Swakopmund in Swakopmund?” one resident told the newspaper. “The area was cleaned half-heartedly and was never sanitised. The suggested sand to cover the last remnant of human waste also was too little to make a difference.” Said the disgruntled resident. The only answer residents got from the municipality is that they did clean up the area. However, it was clear from visiting the area, the attempts were very poor. Another resident said, “my front door path is yet again decorated with human waste and the smell is unbearable.” If this is not enough, the gasses from the blocked pipes pushes up into the drain systems inside the houses in the surrounding area. One resident confronted the contractor at the paddock on Wednesday this week who shed some light on the situation. “The contractor said the wastewater from the paddock is difficult to collect by gravity because the paddock is a low-lying area, and the drains will need to be lifted to a higher level or would require a drainage pump. This cannot continue. Until this can be attended to, who is responsible for the clean-up of the frequent sewerage spills? We deserve answers,” said the resident.

Cannabis dealer on the run Sharlien Tjambari from custody A Congolese National refugee, Kalenga Gilbert (32), escaped from the Swakopmund holding cells, where he was in custody for dealing in cannabis. Gilbert escaped on Monday, 21 March. It is suspected that he fled to either Otjiwarongo or Windhoek. According to Erongo region's Crime Investigating Coordinator, Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu, it is suspected that Gilbert escaped by cutting the grid of the kitchen window in the cell's corridor, passed through the window and ran away. Internal investigations on how he came or was left in the cells corridor alone is being conducted. Gilbert was in custody for dealing in cannabis valued at N$1350 000 and allegedly has a pending drug case after he was found with one gram of cocaine powder valued at N$500.00. Deputy Commissioner Iikuyu said the search for his rearrest is ongoing. Erongo police urges anyone with information to contact Deputy Commissioner Iikuyu at 081 246 4757, Detective Inspector Rosa Tjihavero at 081 821 4756 or to report to the nearest police station.

Breakbulk sugar imports from Brazil offloaded at the Port of Walvis Bay The Namibian Ports Authority (Namport) recently welcomed its first breakbulk consignment of sugar stuffed in 50kg bags, with a total consignment volume of 20,800 tons originating from Brazil. Over the past decade, Namport together with the Walvis Bay Corridor Group (WBCG) has persistently promoted the use of the Port of Walvis Bay and the Namibian corridors linking our Ports to major SADC markets, namely Zambia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Botswana, Angola and South Africa as a crucial hub for the Brazilian imports into Southern Africa. “These efforts have finally borne the much-desired fruits with this first consignment of 20,800 tons breakbulk sugar imports, which is hopefully the first of many to follow”, stated Mr Phillemon Mupupa, Business Development Partner at the Ports Authority. The sugar is destined for Botswana and the importation/handling as well the storage of this consignment is facilitated by SEARAIL Botswana which is the terminal operator for the Botswana Dry Port, situated at the Port of Walvis Bay.

WBNLDC Tackles Corridor Challenges The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) hosted the 12th Walvis Bay-NdolaLubumbashi Development Corridor (WBNLDC) Tripartite Meeting, which was attended by the Ministers of Transport, key government senior officials, technical experts as well as the private sector from the member states of the Republics of Namibia, Zambia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Facilitated by the Walvis Bay Corridor Group (WBCG), the tripartite meeting aimed at reviewing progress in the implementation of the WBNLDC tripartite agreement, which was signed in 2010. Speaking during the official opening ceremony, His Excellency Jacques KYABULA KATWE, the Governor of Haut Katanga Province in Lubumbashi, DRC, underscored the development of mining and the local market for goods and services, which saw an increase of volumes from Walvis Bay via Zambia to DRC. He emphasized that the revitalization of the WBNLDC was necessary for the DRC as it brings access routes via Zambia to DRC. This revitalization was also imperative for the member states of Namibia, DRC and Namibia who are committed to regional cooperation and trade. Recent developments in the member states and regional economic communities pertaining to trade facilitation matters along the corridor were highlighted. The tripartite indaba discussed the urgent need to harmonise transit fees and cross border charges as recommended by the various regional economic communities, extension of border operating hours, and the need for ratification of the WBNLDC tripartite agreement by the Republic of Zambia. Furthermore, the need to find an urgent solution to parking space for truckers and migration to the One Stop Border Post framework, which is a relevant ingredient for enhanced regional integration through trade. With regard to immigration matters, the meeting recommended that the Republic of Namibia should open a diplomatic consulate in Lubumbashi to ease trade and the issuance of visas.

Mr Mbahupu H Tjivikua, the Chief Executive Officer of the WBCG highlighted that the tripartite meeting was held in one of the most stra-tegic places in the region, the Haut Katanga Pro-vince. He shared that the WBNLDC is an important trade artery and an economic lifeline for the Port of Walvis Bay and all the supporting infrastructure such as the Katima Mulilo/Sesheke border, the new Kazungula One Stop Border Post (OSBP) and the mighty Kasumbalesa OSBP, which he referred to as the “Mother of all border crossings in Africa”. He emphasized that the WBNLDC is no longer an alternative trade route to Zambia and the DRC but rather a preferred trade route. “It is therefore the duty of all of us in attendance that we eliminate all these bottlenecks and impediments to trade. Our children are watching us and they would hold us accountable for our inaction and indecision in improving their livelihoods. It is our duty to improve on the ease of doing business and improve the standard of living of the general population of Africa,” said Mr Tjivikua. The meeting also considered possible sustainable funding mechanisms for the establishment of the permanent WBNLDC Secretariat. The secretariat, which is currently hosted by the WBCG, seeks to facilitate the removal of physical and non-physical barriers to the movement of goods and people transiting through Namibia, Zambia and the DRC. The committee's activities are premised on the need to improve operational efficiencies and reduce costs of doing business along the corridor. The meeting was concluded with an Information sharing Session. The events were held from 16 to 18 March 2022, and took place at the Pullman Grand Karavia Hotel in Lubumbashi, DRC. The next tripartite meeting will be held in Livingstone, Zambia in 2023.
