President Geingob calls on Namibians to unite as one
During the independence celebration in Swakopmund the president said, “32 Years ago, the world witnessed the birth of a nation as labour pains the long and bitter struggle for independence and the sacrifices paid in blood – were replaced by the ululation of a people freed from the shackles of colonial oppression, racism, and war”. Geingob further said, “indeed, today we celebrate 32 years of democracy, peace, stability, and unity. It is unity that drove this nation's gallant sons and daughters to bravely fight for our freedom. It is unity that has kept us together, through thick and thin, through good and bad times. It is unity that will take us towards realising the dream of prosperity.” President Geingob said it is understandable that the people want more because they have seen how far the country have come and rightfully believe that this nation can go further. “Indeed, we can, and together, we will. However, what is not understandable is the unreasonable assertion by some, that the days of racist, apartheid South Africa were better than those of post-independent Namibia. Also, it is incomprehensible and deplorable for some Namibians to claim that for the past 32 years, nothing has been achieved, therefore Namibians have no reason to celebrate independence. Such mindsets are not only unpatriotic but insulting to those who made immerse sacrifices in the quest for freedom. Our Independence Day is sacred and should be above our personal feelings and politics of the day”, said President Geingob.
