Discharge operations commenced in the port of Walvis Bay on Wednesday night to discharge 6 600 tons of railway tracks from the cargo ship FWN Merchant.

The tracks are to be used in the reconstruction of the railway line from Walvis Bay to Kranzberg east of Karibib. This is the first delivery of three consignments of railway track that would total 20 000 tons. The second delivery is scheduled for November this year and the third in February 2020. Namibia Stevedoring Services is responsible for the offloading operations which would take several more days. On the picture: the cargo ship FWS Merchant that is alongside at berth number 8.

The alleged NiMT-shooter, Ernst Lichtenstrasser's bid to be released on bail was dismissed on Wednesday in the Swakopmund magistrate's court. The 58-year old Lichtenstrasser will now await his double-murder trial in a small cell at the Windhoek Correctional Facility.

Magistrate Conchita Olivier dismissed the bail application on the grounds she belief the State has a solid case against the accused murderer and that it will not serve public interest if he [Lichtenstrasser] is released on bail.

Licthenstrasser's claim that he has medical complications were also shot down in flames and Olivier said she does not belief the accused murderer is denied any access to medical services.

Lichtenstrasser is accused of having gunned down in cold blood NiMT Director, Eckhart Mueller (72), and his Deputy, Heimo Hellwig (60), at the NiMT offices at Arandis early on the morning of 15 April this year. As the two victims arrived at work, they were allegedly accosted by Licthenstrasser's who was waiting for them. Several shots were fired and Mueller and Hellwig died in huge pools of blood, both with gunshot wounds to the lower abdomen and head.

After hearing witness statements and arguments from Trevor Brockerhoff (Licthenstrasser's lawyer) and the Deputy Prosecutor-General Advocate Antonia Verhoef (Representing the State) Olivier was refused bail.

Lichtenstrasser is due back in court at Swakopmund on 27 September.

Earthquake in Damaraland Isaac Chikosi

A monitoring station of Geological Survey of Namibia (GSN) at Karibib recorded a 4.1 magnitude earthquake (Richter scale) some 44 kilometres northwest of Khorixas on Tuesday. Nine other monitoring stations of GSN registered also picked up the earthquake as far afield as Rundu and Aus in southern Namibia.

The Ministry of Mines and Energy, under which Geological Survey of Namibia resorts, issued a statement on Tuesday confirming the earthquake struck at 16:32. The earthquake occurred at a depth of less than 10 kilometres and is thus classified as “shallow”.

The statement quotes the Deputy Executive Director of the Geological Survey of Namibia, Gloria Simubali, who said a team was to be dispatched to the area where the earthquake occurred. The team will among others interview inhabitants in the area to determine whether there was damage and how people were affected.

In the statement people are given guidelines to stay safe during an earthquake. These guidelines include staying away from windows during an earthquake and to watch out for falling objects. Find refuge under solid objects like a table or stand in a doorway, as this stand the least chances of collapsing. If outdoors try and find a clear area for refuge away from trees, buildings and objects like power lines.

Namibia’s first Galjoen Derby All proceeds from the Derby will go toward a special needs school for Autism Contributed The first Namibia National Galjoen Derby that will be fished out of Henties Bay will be held tomorrow, Saturday 27 July at the coastal town of Henries Bay. The Derby is a local angling history in the making will be become an annual event on par with the Angling Bonanza in December and the Hentiesbaai Visfees in October.

Some outstanding prizes are up for grabs, the first prize being a respectable N$10 000. No catch will be weighed unless an angler is able to show his/her entry ticket, a Namibian Angling Permit and a National ID/passport/driver's licence. “Lines-in” at 05:30 and scales close at 16:00, strictly, and the prize giving will be at the Henties Bay hydroslide (super tube). Live entertainment, a cash bar and various food stalls will cater for the hungry and the thirsty. Proceedings will start at 09:00.

All proceeds from the Derby will go towards a fund in aid of the building of a specialised school for children with Autism in Swakopmund. This will be a first for Namibia. Stepping Stone Special Education School opened doors in 2015 for learners with special needs, mainly to assist children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The school has a guiding philosophy that through the Stepping Stones they provide, each child they teach can reach their full potential. The individual needs of all students are what Stepping Stone School focuses on and this is what makes this school such a great success. A combination of specialist teaching strategies, tailored resources and a high staff to student ratio is utilised to enable excellent learning out-comes.

Stepping Stone School is an ambitious school with exciting plans for the future. In 2017 the Municipality of Swakopmund awarded an institutionally zoned land so that the school could build a new educational learning centre dedicated to special education to accommodate around 120 primary school learners with ASD and similar special learning needs.

Caution road works Motorists are urged to exercise patience on the B2 coastal road at the entrance to Walvis Bay, as road resurfacing is conducted at the Narraville bridge area. The road works result in vehicles having to queue, especially during traffic peak periods in the mornings and after 17:00.

Complaints were received of motorists jumping the queue by driving on the side of the road. This is illegal and dangerous, so please desist from this type of behaviour behind the steering wheel.

Where is the money?

Government provide Topnaar with as much as N$70 000 per month. Yet the Topnaar still among the poorest people in the country.

It is high time the traditional leadership of the Topnaars explain why these people are still drenched in poverty on the banks of the Kuiseb River, despite being the recipients of thousands of Namibian Dollar each month from the Namibian Government in the form of tourism concessions and a fishing quota.

The Minister of Environment and Tourism, Pohamba Shifeta, advised President Hage Geingob during a meeting last Thursday with inhabitants of Erongo that the Acting tribal head of the Topnaars, Chief Stoffel Anamab, should do some explaining. Anamab took over the role as traditional leader of the Topnaars following the death in January this year of the long-serving leader of the Topnaars, Chief Seth Kooitjie.

Minister Shifeta advised President Geingob to demand an explanation how the Topnaar's money is spent every month after Mr. Rudolf Dausab complained about the poverty this small community finds itself perpetually.

Giving account of how funds are spent should also include a detailed audit of the financials of the Topnaar Community Foundation.

According to Dausab the Topnaar people number some 2 500 individuals. They are the smallest cultural group in the country but also among the poorest.

“Our people are really suffering.” Dausab said during the meeting. Dausab appealed to the President to hear the concerns of the Topnaars, as some of the people are currently without water because they cannot afford paying for it.

“Many of us are unemployed. This causes us to be at loggerheads with parastatals such as Namwater, because we are unable to pay for the water supplied. If there is no water, then we cannot produce or feed our families”.

Dausab also explained the Topnaars cannot claim customary land rights, as the area where they live is divided into two national parks.

In his reply Minister Shifeta highlighted the fact that the Topnaars have three tourism con-

cessions and also a lucrative fishing quota.

“These altogether are worth millions. The problem is the money earned from these concessions is not going to the community”, Shifeta accused.

The Governor of Erongo, Clr Cleophas Mutjavikua added to this stating the Topnaar Traditional Authority receives between N$60 000 and The Topnaar live on the banks of the Kuiseb River for centuries already N$70 000 a month.

In fact, Clr Mutjavikua explained, the Topnaar is the only traditional community in Namibia that receives such a large monthly income from Government.

“Where is the money?” Minister Shifeta again asked.

Escapees re-arrested Isaac Chikosi

The long arm of the law has caught up with two escapees, one Johannes Nuseb (19), who escaped with two other fugitives from Henties Bay Police holding cells over the weekend and Ricky Goagoseb (32), who escaped lawful custody while leaving Karibib Magistrate's Court in March this year were rearrested earlier this week.

Goagoseb who has been running from the law since March this year, was nabbed in Windhoek while Nuseb who is charged with rape was re-arrested in Mondesa, Swakopmund.

More live game exports to D.R. Congo

The cargo vessel El Nino is alongside in the port of Walvis Bay to load live game destined for an upmarket tourism facility in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It was understood that the live game exported include an unspecified number of hippo. Similar game exports have taken place in recent months and on one occasion some of the game died en route from the place of capture to the port of Walvis Bay.

African water bird winter census at the Walvis Bay Lagoon Eileen van der Schyff The Coastal Environmental Trust of Namibia finished their Walvis Bay winter bird count this past weekend. According to Peter Bridgeford who conducted the count, this winter's bird count total is average as most bird migrants are in Europe to escape our winter.

The count took place on the mornings of 20 and 21 July between 09:00 and 13:00 at the Walvis Bay Lagoon and wetlands also known as the Ramsar site.

Unlike good visibility and mostly sunshine on Saturday, reduced visibility worked against counting on Sunday because of thick fog and no sun all day. Bridgeford said: “Black-necked Grebes are an undercount, as are the Flamingos in places and smaller birds. In the Sewage Ponds, the smelly water prevented counters getting to all ponds and the reeds also blocked our view.” A total of 75,176 birds of 38 species were recorded. “This compares favourably with the 2018 winter count of 80,729 but is down from the 110,300 counted in 2010,” Bridgeford said. In 2017 only 54,412 birds were counted and in 2012, 50,800 were recorded. “Our most visible birds, the flamingos recorded at 36,477 which compares favourably with other winter counts.

However, the most flamingos were counted in the winter of 2004 at 43,679 flamingos. Lesser Flamingos, with many juveniles, probably from Kamfers Dam in Kimberley, totalled 14,789 which is not a bad number for a winter count, as in 2010, we only had 2,945 and in 2012, 644”. Bridgeford said. In July 2013, 21,919 were counted.

Black-necked Grebes are down from 16,494 in 2013, to 2,976 this year. However, according to Bridgeford, fog reduced visibility in the ponds with these birds, so many more could have been lurking in the fog. A surprising 75 Cape Shovellers not usually found in seawater were recorded. These birds prefer fresh water. What could be counted at the sewage ponds provided a total of 15,963 birds of 21 species. Of these 14,463 were Lesser Flamingos. Together with the Lesser Flamingos counted in the lagoon and wetlands, a total of 29,252 Lesser Flamingos were recorded.

The next bird count will be in the summer of 2020.

In conclusion, Peter Bridgeford thanks Walvis Bay Salt Refiners for allowing them access to their property and for sponsoring of their lunches. Thanks go out to Namib Marine Services who ferried the counters from the waterfront to the mudflats.

An Pullover wurden längere Bündchen gestrickt. Hosen wurden mit bunten Borten verlängert. Zum Einkaufen und zur Schule musste ich mehrere Kilometer zu Fuß laufen oder mit dem Rad fahren, da es entweder nicht genügend oder nur teures Benzin gab.

Transportiert wurden die Einkäufe in einem Netz oder Einkaufskorb.

Wenn Kleidung nicht mehr brauchbar war, wurden alle noch verwertbaren Dinge wie Knöpfe oder Reißverschlüsse abgetrennt und der Rest für Flicken oder als Putzlappen genutzt. Wir trugen KEINE Kleidung aus China und Japan, sondern unterstützten die örtlichen Hersteller.

Geschenkpapier wurde vorsichtig geöffnet, um

Auch euer Koma-Saufen gab es früher nicht, Getränke gab es überwiegend aus wiederverwertbaren Glasflaschen und seinen Müll hat jeder nach der Feier wieder mit nach Hause genommen oder in den dafür vorgesehenen Behältern entsorgt.

Wenn ihr dann einmal so nachhaltig lebt, wie meine Generation gelebt hat, dann dürft IHR gerne streiken.

Coastal juniors secure triple Bronze A small team of Namibian Karateka and Officials took part in the 18th UFAK African Senior Karate Championships and the 10th UFAK African Junior Karate Championships in Gaborone, Botswana.

The three Junior karateka who secured triple Bronze for Namibia at the 10thUFAK African Junior Karate Championships are Westley Marshall (Junior Male Kata), Mayvonne Swart (Junior Female Kumite under 59kg) and Timothy Coleman (Junior Male Kumite under 55kg).

The Namibian team that participated at the African Senior and Junior Karate Championships consisted of Suzelle Pronk (Team Captain), René Giliomee, Phillip Van Antwerpen, Jan-Magiel Leff, Mayvonne Swart, Timothy Coleman and Westley Marshall with Llewellyn Manale as the coach and Mr Leonard Martin as the Team Manager.

The delegation was headed by the President of NAKU Mr Cornelius D'Alton and several Namibian Karate Officials consisting of Wikus Oberholster (Namibia Chief Referee), Gert Husselmann, and Theresa Swart as Referees and Judges.

Initially a larger squad of athletes was selected to represent Namibia at the championships but due to unforeseen circumstances many had to withdraw. Despite this, Coach Manale and his team once again putting on a highly respectable performance as they won three bronze medals and finishing 11th amongst the 23 countries represented at the event.

NAKU wishes to extend tremendous congratulations to the medal winners and the officials who received continental judging qualifications at the event.

The Namibian officials who received continental judging qualifications are Gert Husselman (UFAK Kata Judge A and UFAK Kumite Judge B) and Theresa Swart (UFAK Kata Judge B) the first Namibian woman to receive a Continental Judges qualification, once again paving the way for other female karateka in the country to follow.

When asked to comment on his team's performance Coach Manale said “It was a great championship with a very high level of competitive karate. There were many outstanding performances for such a young team! We had a few setbacks and stiff competition at the event.

“Team Namibia is an ever-growing team. It's time to face the challenges ahead and become a fierce force to reckon with and there is definitely a bright future for all our karateka's out there and we have already started stepping up.

At African Championships level we are no longer just taking part but competing for medals. This is a step in the right direction and I am very proud of what we've achieved and what the future holds” Coach Manale added.

Erongo Red recently handed over a sponsorship to the value of N$50 000 to Playtime Trust Namibia to signify their continued commitment to empower the youth. Playtime Namibia is a non-profit organisation with the purpose of youth development through sport.

Acting Chief Executive Officer of Erongo Red Mr Caude Tjizo said at the handover ceremony that sport is good for physical and mental well-being and provide young people with opportunities for social development in an active environment by bonding and interacting with their peers and coaches. Tjizo said: “As we are all aware that

young people of today are the future leaders, Erongo Red cares and strives to nurture and mould the lives of these young people because one of the fundamental values of Erongo Red is empowerment.

This gesture is a demonstration of our determination to empower our youngsters by creating platforms where they can have fun”.

Tjizo thanked the Trustees of Playtime Namibia for creating this platform for the youth and thanked the various coaches for their valuable input and knowledge that they shared with the young players. Tjizo strongly believes that their valuable input will enhance the talents of the young players.

The Playtime Trust Namibia is based in Walvis Bay and offers multi-disciplinary sports training programmes in soccer, cricket and athletics for the youth at the coast, particularly from disadvantaged areas and offers professional training to coaches.

Tjizo said that Erongo Red offers bursaries and job attachments to young Namibians who seek to further their studies at various technical colleges and universities in and around the country.

Currently the sports of choice of Playtime Namibia is football. The trust facilitates training pro-

grammes in Kuisebmond and Walvis Bay for over 300 children in the various age groups.

Playtime has the coaches, the structures, the equipment and the systems in place to provide youth training and development at no cost to the children.

The coaching staff are experienced and qualified in their respective fields.

With the help of volunteer coaches and assistants they guide and oversee the various training sessions and organised events.

Playtime stands for inclusiveness and broad participation. Every child has a right to participate and enjoy sport games and activities as long as they follow a simple list of basic rules.

Through sport we develop and empower our youth.

We teach them life skills for a better future and hopefully make them better persons and contributing members of our society.

Competitive school's Netball at Pro-Ed Rudi Bowe The Capricorn Group Schools Netball League game played the first time at Pro-Ed Academy in Swakopmund on 13 July.

Capricorn Group extended their legacy as connectors of positive change by sponsoring the Capricorn Group Schools Netball League, previously known as the Bank Windhoek Schools Netball Super League. This netball league carries the official endorsement of the Namibia Schools Sport Union (NSSU) and is regarded as the Official National League for Netball in Namibia.

The under 19 teams from PSG Pro-Ed Academy and De Duine Secondary School set up big surprises as the draw against the under 18 teams of Tsumeb Gymnasium and Windhoek Gymnasium respectively.

The under 19 game between the two harbour town schools, Walvis Bay Private High School and De Duine was won by the Private School 59 – 36. PSG Pro-Ed Academy lost their game against Windhoek Gymnasium 28 – 38 whilst De Duine beat Edugate 35 – 30, WBPHS beat Tsumeb Gymnasium 55 - 49 and Edugate beat 49 – 41 WBPHS. Pro-Ed Academy is very grateful for a successful day of Netball and the good spirit in which the Capricorn Group Schools Netball League games took place. It was a privilege for Pro-Ed to host the games and they hope to do so again next year.

Thanks to everyone who supported the day and congratulations to the teams who were victorious in the field.

The past weekend saw Rossmund Golfers taking part in their annual club championships sponsored by Marsh Namibia.

Saturday afternoon the weather conditions were just perfect as was the golf course – Number 13 was quite a challenge in itself. Playing in their designated divisions 42 players tackled their first 18 holes.

At the end of the day well known local golfer Stefanus Bonifatius was in the lead followed closely by Grant Mather, Kevin Wentzel and Likius Nande whilst Rina Knight was ahead in the ladies section.

Sunday morning however posted a very different picture with misty wet conditions – fortunately tee off was only from after 8 o'clock - giving visibility especially over the back nine a chance to improve slightly.

However, Grant Mather managed to keep his cool - whilst his putter was really hot - resulting in a 5 shot win over Likius Nande. This was quite a nostalgic day for Grant Mather having last won this championship 19 years ago at the turn of the millennium.

Marsh Namibia representative Joleen Pretorius stated at the prize-giving ceremony that it was indeed for them a great honour to be part of this prestigious tournament and thanked all the golfers for their participation and sportsmanship.

The Pro Shop sponsored the competition that was played on Wednesday 17 July. Thanks Marco for always filling in when needed. The field was fair and as always the clubhouse was full of golfers all trying to talk at once.

There was a tie for the Most Golf - this ended up in Helga Engling, Peter Bass and Peter Bottger sharing a bottle of red. I understand Stuart Salt shot his first two clubs but unfortunately for him on this occasion no prize.

Overall Winner on the day was Fanie Terblanche with brilliant 42 points followed by Fritz Coetzee Jnr on 38 points. Gaby Adams went home with the 9 hole prize shooting 19pts over the back nine.
