"Retrenchments are off" - TransNamib Photo by Liesl Losper

Refurbished locomotives arrive as turnaround plan confusion and upset deepens Liesl Losper One of the five refurbished TransNamib locomotives from South Africa, welcomed by Namibia’s Minister of Transport on Tuesday, made its first arrival on Saturday morning at the Walvis Bay railway station. The five locomotives are part of TransNamib’s 180-day Turnaround plan, that was adopted on 25 September 2014, in a quest to improve the company’s performance. The refurbished locomotive arrived while great uncertainty surrounds the planned retrenchment of some 960 TransNamib workers, who at this stage, do not still know who they are. When namib times on various occasions tried to establish how many TransNamib workers residing in Erongo would be affected, the answer that was repeatedly given from various stakeholders, was that the names were not yet known, and thus the figure for Erongo was not available. TransNamib says it needs 9 billion Namibian dollar (or around 773 million US dollar) to refurbish its infrastructure. The Chairman of the TransNamib Hold-

ings Board of Directors, Dr Pieter Oosthuizen, says the railway infrastructure that belongs to the government is in a very bad condition and it poses serious safety concerns. “If these tracks are not maintained, we will face serious safety issues and we may risk derailments or lose our hard-earned assets,” Oosthuizen said. TransNamib wants to get rid of its “non-core” activities, under which its parcel and road freight business. But while many are up in arms about this move, TransNamib maintains that it is not leaving its workers to the wolves. “We are not sending our employees to the streets to be unemployed as it

Our Turnaround Plan was well calculated with vested political interest by our Government not to increase the already high unemployment in Namibia. This is definitely not what TransNamib’s Turnaround Plan is all about. According to the latest news on the TransNamib retrenchment saga, Dr Pieter Oosthuizen, comment-

ed. “The empowerment strategy of our Turnaround Plan is to transform our affected employees into job creators and not job seekers. It is therefore sad to note how parties misrepresent our Turnaround Plan out of context, misleading the Nation that TransNamib is retrenching employees leaving them in the wilderness of unemployment.” Efforts from the newspa-

per to get comment from TransNamib and NATAU on how this retrenchment is impacting specifically the Erongo Region, first proved futile. But, according to a report in African Cargo News, it plans to give its parcel and road freight sections and around 1 000 of its workers over to the Namibia Transport and Allied Workers Union, NATAU’s business arm, Zealot Invest-

ments. Then very late yesterday, after several more telephone calls to get clarity over the matter, or at least a time frame for the planned retrenchments, we received the following joint statement from TransNamib and Natau: “The recent consultations between TransNamib Management and NATAU over the Right Sizing Exercise at TransNamib

is.
