Namibia’s Head of State Dr. Hage Geingob’s message at the 2018 Heroes Day commemoration was for Namibia to look forward as a nation united. Forward on the path of peace, healing and national reconciliation. “Let us hold hands in the spirit of Unity, Liberty and Justice, for the sake of a better Namibia”, the President said in his keynote address at Nkurenkuru in Kavango-West where the official Heroes Day celebrations took place.

Boom gates at last a reality for rail crossings The CEO of TransNamib, Johny Smith, confirmed over the weekend that talks would soon start with the Walvis Bay local authority to install boom gates at the two railway crossings in town. Smith spoke to namib times at the scene in Hannah Mupetami Road where a train and a truck collided early on Saturday morning. The collision closed the rail line for several hours. The cause of the accident is currently under investigation. (See pictures on page 2)

Two accidents At the time of going to press yesterday the Motor Vehicle Accident Fund (MVAF) was yet to release statistics of road accidents for the Heroes Day long weekend. So far, only two accidents on coastal roads were reported. Apart from a rear end collision between two vehicles on the B2 coastal road, this Audi luxury saloon left the road and overturned on the MR44 road (behind the dunes) between Swakopmund and Walvis Bay early on Monday morning. There were several occupants in the vehicle and everyone was lucky to only escaped with minor injuries.

Staff Reporter An uncompleted house in Meyer Street in Swakopmund's Tamariskia has become a cesspool of dirt and garbage and a potential hideout for criminals and drug users. Uncompleted and even abandoned houses have become an eyesore, not only in Swakopmund but also in Walvis Bay. The communities of the coastal towns hope the local authorities of the two towns can act (namib times reported on the same matter in a recent edition on empty houses in Walvis Bay). With regard to the Meyer Street house, from the outside, this uncompleted house looks like a work in progress, but a closer look reveals the dilapidated state the structures are actually in. Empty beer bottles, garbage and excrement litter the floors of each room. There is a makeshift bed in the one room, indicating the place is used by vagrants or even criminals or drug users. Residents in the area say different people can be seen there during the day. “They might be busy with drugs”, said one resident. Others say the house is used as a hideout by fleeing criminals. A reporter from the namib times, who visited the property, noticed the vulgar graffiti on the walls and the debris in the yard. It is clear this house needs to be cleaned up before development can be continued. A report has since been sent to the Municipality's Health Department, to investigate and determine what can be done to curb the abuse of this property as it poses a risk in many ways to the residents of Tamariskia. During holidays, school children can be seen frequenting the building. “There's an old man who comes to sleep here at night”, said a passer-by who also lives in the area. Abandoned buildings such as this are not only an eyesore, but a potential hideout for criminals and drug users.

Thanks to hard work by TransNamib workers railway line open within hours When a reporter of namib times witnessed over the weekend how teams of TransNamib committed themselves into repairing and reopening the railway line, following the collision between a train and a truck on the Hannah Mupetami railway crossing in Walvis Bay, the following came to mind: “One cannot choose what life throws at you, but you can choose how you react to it”. Workers decided not to venture too long in the misfortune of the railway accident, but wasted no time to repair the damaged railway line, as heavy lifting equipment cleared the scene of the accident from the wreck of the truck as well as placing one of the locomotives that derailed back onto the line. (Pictures herewith tell the story).

Another four penguins were rescued since the namib times covered the story of Daisy, the penguin, a couple of weeks ago. A very undernourished and oil covered Daisy was rescued at Tiger Reef in Swakopmund on 10 June this year. After she was taken in, cleaned and fed, she gained her strength back and was flown to LĂźderitz and released back into the wild near Halifax island, almost a month after her rescue. The four newly rescued penguins were found two weeks ago between Sandwich Harbour and Walvis Bay and after being cleaned from oil, are currently recuperating at the residence of Mr Boorman and Dr. Dantu, the same people who rescued and nurtured Daisy. Mr. Boorman and Dr. Dantu run a halfway house for penguins in Swakopmund. They would like to thank the following sponsors: Hansa Hotel for 10 Boxes of Pilchards Ms Elgin Ritter of Ritter Safari Adventures CC for 5 Boxes of Pilchards Anonymous Donor for 4 boxes of Pilchards Ms Karin Lohmann for 5 Boxes of Pilchards Cymot sponsored rescue transport boxes which they are planning to offer to coastal tour operators to carry in case they come across a penguin in trouble. How to save when you live alone

Manager: PR & Reputation Risk André Le Roux Living alone can be both an exciting journey and a challenging one. It gives you a sense of freedom, where you are the sole ruler of your domain, yet it is considered to be more expensive if compared with sharing with someone. In order to maintain a certain lifestyle, one cannot escape basic living expenses such as electricity, food, entertainment and transport. "All of these needs are essential and to stay afloat, it is recommended that you keep them under control by managing how much of your monthly income is spent on each of them," said Bank Windhoek's Manager of Public Relations, André Le Roux. Below are some of the saving tips Le Roux shares: Electricity and food ·Switch off your geyser when it's not in use. Hot water stays warmer for a long time when only one person uses the hot water tap. Turning on the geyser an hour before it is needed helps you save on electricity. ·Turn off appliances that are on stand-by. ·Plan meals so that when you're cooking, you can make extra servings to freeze. Meals that freeze well, for instance soups and stews, rice and lentils. This not only reduces the use of electricity, but the amount of time you'll need to cook on a weekly basis. ·Boil six eggs at a time and keep them in the fridge. ·Eat snacks like popcorn, carrots, celery and make your own dipping sauce. It's cheaper and healthier. ·Keep a refrigerated bottle of water mixed with lemon and mint. It is refreshing - no need to spend money on sugary cool drinks. ·Buy items like cheese, milk and bread in bulk and freeze them for later use. ·Take a packed lunch to work instead of buying from a kiosk. ·Use a slow or pressure cooker when cooking. It saves time, electricity and money. ·Learn how to cook your favourite dishes from restaurants and take-away outlets. You'll be surprised at how easy it is and how much healthier you can make them. ·Fill up your washing machine and do only full washes. Entertainment ·Choose if you need uncapped internet or a television subscription. Re-evaluate the different packages on offer. ·Buy products on promotions - buy one get one half price or free. ·Get a hobby that you can enjoy at home instead of having to go out and spend money on unbudgeted items or events. Transport ·If you own a vehicle, try filling it up early in the morning or late in the afternoon. The temperatures at these times of day influence the volume of fuel you're able to get into your tank. ·If you commute using a taxi, make sure that it is budgeted for by striking an agreement with the taxi driver who lets you pay for it at the end of every month. ·Another good transport option is to share lifts or buy a bike and get extra exercise – it is healthy. "For those just moving into a new place, consider buying second hand furniture. It is far less expensive than buying brand new furniture and depending on where you get it, is very often in excellent condition. In terms of insuring the contents of your home, ask an insurance broker for a quote to insure the contents of your home. This is important because you have to be prepared for unknown associated risks," Le Roux said "Paying close attention to small tips like these could result in substantial day to day savings. When living alone, it is wise to start building and maintaining an emergency fund that you can depend on at a time when unforeseen circumstances occur, such as loss of a job or loss of income due to illness. Your emergency fund should ideally cover three to six months of your monthly expenses and should form part of your monthly savings plan. Bank Windhoek has a wide range of savings products that are tailored to meet this need and are available at any nearest Bank Windhoek Branch," Le Roux concluded.

He added the incident is under investigation and accidents such as these is a setback in the quest to turn TransNamib around into a profitable and efficient national rail carrier. Haskell Ricardo Tunino Mr Smith, this has been an accident prone zone for years now so don't feel bad being the CEO of TRANSNAMIB. Walvis Bay Golf Club Chairmans Report 2018 The President, Joao Sardinha, Honorary Life Members, Committee Members, Members of the Walvis Bay Golf Club (WBGC), and visitors were welcome to the 101st ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING of the Walvis Bay Golf Club by the Chairman. The past year has been one with various challenges both in the club and on the course, but I believe we have overcome them with some aplomb. We have spent money on club improvements as well as some money on the course maintenance. Staff matters The club has functioned well over the past year and there has not been any turnover of staff, which is always a good sign that the staff is happy Frieda was away on maternity leave and enjoyed it so much she decided to do it all over again this year; we wish her well for the rest of her term and birth of her baby. The good functioning of the club has been as a result of the input of the manager, Gert Olivier, and thanks to him for his inputs where and whenever. As always, there are things that can be done better and systems improved, and all I can ask is for the members to please be proactive and get issues brought to the committee for attention. Bar talk mostly never resolves issues, and this we all know. With reference to the bar ladies I can only ask from all members and demand from visitors that you all maintain decorum and behaviour of acceptable standards at all times. During the year I did have to ask all members to take a step back in respect of decorum and behaviour and I do believe there was an improvement, however, this should not be a one off thing it should be maintained at all times. It is the least we can expect from our members. Our green keeping staff is all in a good space and Schalk has really grown in stature over the past year and this is indeed

obvious on the greens and can also be seen in the general condition of the course. The bar and greens staff all received a nominal increase earlier in the year. Greens and course As mentioned, Schalk has really done well over the past year and when we had the rain the whole team stood up and did a great job with limited resources to get the water drained and off the course as best they could. Many thanks to Trevor for the loan of his pump during those days. Our trusted pair of engineers, Jason and Darryl was as always on hand to make sure that the things went according to [their] plans and we say thanks to them for their ongoing positive inputs. We bought a new mower for 116 000 and on the way here the truck turned over and the mower was damaged and as it is an imported unit we await for the delivery of the new one. We also bought another petrol golf cart to be used on the course for the smaller maintenance jobs. The general engine and machinery repairs have been well handled by Schalk this has also saved us a bob or two. Here we also need to acknowledge Wayne Hart for the 'use' of his workshop on occasions, many thanks Wayne. Jason and his team constructed and built a water container on a trailer for using when we need to fertilize and spray for worms, ants, etc. This little blaster is a great asset and frees up a lot of time. Thanks Jason. We increased the height of the fences at number 1 and 2 only to have the east wind b l o w t h e m o v e r. Thanks to Willie Brandweer for his inputs and efforts on the course, just another one of those jobs that just seem to happen. Club matters Last year I said and I quote, "We spent

some more money on club house improvements". And again, I can say the same, although most of the money that was spent this time was for the improvement to the garages. That cost was about 110 000 of which the Festive Cup generated 43 000. The inside of the club was also painted and the storeroom was renovated and improved, these two costs about 40 000. So as you can see we have spent a lot of money, but it was all to improve the club for the members. There was some serious rain damage and the Municipality stood in for these repairs. The catering is still being outsourced and I think there are good comments about the quality of meals supplied each Saturday. The Pro shop is functioning well iro collecting green fees, etc. Thanks to Gert and his staff. Finally to those who made ongoing contributions to the club in whatever form, including Saturday competitions, fund raiser support and sponsorship, the Tsumeb challenge and in many other ways, you know who you are and we can only say a heartfelt thank you for your generosity. The club lease has been renewed all be it for only five years. We have tried to keep the subs and bar price increases to a minimum. This is not always an easy task as the course takes a lot out of the tank and as members we expect [and some even demand] that our course is always in the best condition and this costs money. We do not take these decisions lightly, but sometimes there is just no alternative. I am happy to advise that we have got the debtors well down from the previous year. Thanks to Michelle for this effort. The moving of the pool table to 'inside'

the bar area seems to be a hit. Starting next month one of our members has offered to sponsor the upgrading of the lounge area, so watch this space. Tonight we are also launching a club raffle for two return air tickets to Cape Town as first prize. There are two other prizes of 2 000 and 1 000. The cost of a ticket is 100 and if you buy or sell 10 tickets you will get one free. There are only 130 tickets to be sold and possibly 13 free tickets makes for a total of 143 in the draw. The game We have a few of our guys knocking on the door for National Colours and indeed have been selected to represent our country. Gert Olivier has maintained his second place in the NAGU order of merit. His consistent golf saw him selected for the National team for the Zone 5 tournament in Zimbabwe. Added to this Gert was awarded the Golf Coach of the year for 2017 by the NJGF. His efforts are visible for all to see in the junior results. A great honour and very well done Gert. Kevin Wentzel has moved into third place and was also selected for the National team that travelled to Zim for the Zone 5. Well done Kevin. After a long layoff, Stanley Gawaab has returned to the game, welcome back Stanley and he is in fourth place. Grant Mather has returned to amateur status and by virtue of h i s g o o d p e r f o rmances has seen him move into eighth place. Great stuff by the guys. It was not only the guys that have done well. Hard work and lots of practice has seen Wilma van der Merwe selected for the NLGU team to travel to Ghana later in the year, and well done to her for this fine effort, in real trying conditions competing week after week in a predominantly men's

field. Juniors Willie Els was chosen to represent Namibia at the British u/16 Junior Championships in Scotland May of this year. 154 juniors from across the world took part and he finished 110th. 2 months after his return Willie won the Swakopmund Junior Open in August. His current NJGF order of merit raking u/18 is Nr.3. Jonathan Mather's current NJGF order of merit raking is Nr. 4. He won A-Division Best Gross in the Swakopmund Junior Open in August. Emile Vilbert (Jnr), 9 years of age, competed in the 36 hole medal division of the Swakopmund Open and won the BDivision Best Gross. Bertie Coetzee won C-Division Best Gross in the Swakopmund Open, 2nd was Theunis Alberts, who lost the play off on first playoff hole against Bertie. Tied 3rd in the C-Division was Lazlo Tangeni (one of our Development players), on 30 points. Sponsors Again, this is a copy paste of the last two of my reports. There is not too much that I can add to these comments. We are indeed spoilt by having the number and size of sponsorships that we have for our weekend round of golf. Prize value varies between N$2 000 and N$10 000, which is just phenomenal and we can only thank and acknowledge these sponsors. I can ask that all members remember these sponsors and support them whenever possible. I must, however, add that three years ago, it was decided by the committee that Saturday golf competition would only be in a format that scores can be recorded. Recently this caused too much of an issue. The sponsor is more than welcome to come up with a format and as long as it fits these criteria then we will gladly play it. Any other Mickey Mouse formats will not be allowed unless the committee decides otherwise; after all it is they that do the day to day running of the club. If any members would like to provide

any positive input in this matter or any other club matter, then please discuss with either the Club Captain or even the Chairman. Phoning the sponsor and interfering is way out of line and will not be tolerated. But I think enough has been said on this topic. Social and corporate golf We have continued to encourage 'cheaper' golf and in an effort to encourage play on Friday afternoons and Sunday for the whole day, we decided to keep the green fees half price for both nine and 18 holes. I am sure as summer approaches, many more players will avail them to this offer. The RACE TO CAPE TOWN sponsored by TRAVEL MAGIC is now in its 6th year and the leader board is hotting up for the two air tickets. The rules were revised – thanks Wouter, and the leader board info are sent out regularly. The PISCS MONTHLY MEDAL was also revamped and AIR NAMIBIA [need to confirm] came on board to sponsor additional prized for the overall winner thanks to JJ and his team for this ongoing sponsorship. Our membership draw seems to be working and although we have taken a few knocks I believe we are achieving what we set out to, and that was to get subs paid earlier and then secondary to get members to visit the club albeit for an hour on a Friday. Just on the subs bandwagon, all members are again reminded that subs need to be fully paid by the end of September. We have already got over 120 members that have fully or partly paid, which is a great deal better than last year this time. We have continued with the idea of having a max of one corporate day per month, and from all reports most of these have been well supported and we hope those who needed to generate funds did indeed do so. Times are tough at the moment and thanks to the members who continually support these fund raisers. Committee And finally to my

committee over the past year, many thanks for your unselfish and unrewarded time, effort and money that you have put in during the year. Most of the time things are done behind the scenes and the members are not even aware of them, they just seem to happen. This is not the case there are members that get these things done. It has been my pleasure to work with each and every one of you and please accept my sincere appreciation for your contribution no matter how big or how small. Tonight two committee members are standing down after two years of dedicated service. Sadly the engineers, Jason and Darryl, have decided to call it a day. I am not sure what we are going to talk about in my office at 6h45 in the morning. These meetings will be sorely missed.Lu-Andre has left for greener pastures in Windhoek and we wish him all the success there and his presence will also be missed at the club and on the course. I know that you will leave a hole on the committee, but I am sure that the replacements elected tonight will fill your shoes with enthusiasm and dedication. I also believe that should we need to push on your buttons you will give us the necessary support. I am available for reelection. The committee for the next year is as follows President John Sardinha Captain Herman Smidt Vice Captian Andre Burger Chairman Shane Westerdale Treasurer Kurt Brits Additional Carlos de Gouveia Christo Muller Emile Vilbert Jonas Niilenge Willie van Zyl [Brandweer] Wilma van der Merwe Secretary Michelle Wilson We welcome the new member Carlos de Gouveia, Christo Muller and Emile Vi l b e r t o n t o t h e committee.

"Volleyball in our country has been showing positive signs of growth over the years and we are certain that the code will prosper and benefit our country as a whole," she said.

It must have been one of the closest finishes the Namib Diesel Social League has had for many years. Going into the final round Supatronix and FCS were tied at the top with 183 points each, and in second and third, Radio Electronic and BitStream had 167, with Terra Nova lying third with 160. When the points were tallied after the final round on Friday 10th it was Supatronix who came out tops and became the winners of the Namib Diesel Social League 2018. Whoop, Whoop!! Well played guys/gals Finishing up in second place was FCS and in third position Terra Nova managed to notch up just enough points to take the third slot by one point. Magic stuff all round. A social league that was more than enjoyed by the players who, which can be said with certainty were sad to see it come to an end. Special thanks to Namib Diesel for their continued sponsorship of this very popular and awesome annual event. It is with much gusto that the players will look forward to the Namib Diesel Social Double league next month. Keep those squash racquets swinging the Doubles league is going to be just as good.. Uh! Coastal swimmer breaks Namibia u20’s ready for Romania swim record in Germany Namibian swimmer from Swakopmund Phillip Seidler participated in the 18thNeuruppin Open Water 10km swim in Germany with 126 participants from two continents, four states and more than 30 cities from all over Germany on 11 August 2018. The Neuruppiner open water swimming race offers a special challenge each year for extreme and long-distance swimmers from Germany and the neighboring countries as they swam over distances of 15, 10, 5 or one kilometer. Seidler the 17th FINA World Championship starter and 5 times Pupkewitz Jetty Mile winner, participated in long-distance swimming over 10km that was an extreme challenge. He had to fight against strong wind gusts, strong opposing currents and waves, which made the orientation of the 10km route from Wustrau to Neuruppin more difficult. The organizers commented and noticed that it has never been before that a 10km swimmer was spotted after 2 hours from the Bollwerk (finish line). Phillip took the victory after 2:06 hours, setting a new course record in the 10km swim. Not only was Phillip Seidler honored with a certificate, he also brought a trophy and a metallic stature from Theodor Fontane back home to Namibia. Phillip was accompanied by Nadine Hälbich, a biokinetician from Swakopmund, who assisted him before, during after the competition. The Neuruppin swim race was a very challenging race for Phillip and was a good preparation for the upcoming FINA/HOSA Marathon Swim World Series - Abu Dhabi in November. Junior Pairs 2018

Bowling Club ended in fourth place. Ruan is only 11 years old. The event was well-supported, with numerous spectators enjoying the great weather and some excellent bowls. Windhoek Bowling Club hopes to host this Tournament for many years to come as its main aim is to allow novice players to play against players of more or less equal strength and thus to develop the sport.

This past weekend once again saw Windhoek Bowling Club host their annual Junior Pairs tournament. Eligible bowlers are those who are affiliated to the Namibia Bowling Association and who have played the sport for less than five years. Age is not a factor, so a person in their sixties can be classified a junior. There were seven teams this year and the competition format was a complete round robin. Teams thus played six games in total. This year there were only two bowlers from the Coast, with the other twelve being members of the four Windhoek Clubs. The oldest player in the Tournament was 74 years old, with the youngest being 11, thus proving that bowls is for people of all ages. Four cash prizes were on offer, totalling N$5000. Sponsorship for the Tournament was obtained from Kleber and Associates, as well as cash donations from the members themselves of Windhoek Bowling Club. There were many hard-fought games but the competition proved too strong for some teams. The eventual winners were John Hawthorne of Eros Bowling Club (EBC) and Huipie van Wyk of Omeya Bowling Club (OBC). Runners-up were Freddie Fouche (EBC) and Claude Thorburn (OBC). In third place were mother and daughter team, AnnalizeWolfaardt and Elzaan de Vries, who both hail from Namib Park Bowling Club in Walvis Bay. Christo de Beer (EBC) and Ruan Calitz from Transnamib
