The Welwitschia Private Hospital inaugurated its state-of-the-art intensive care unit on Tuesday. The intensive care unit significantly raises the bar for the level and quality of medical care the harbour town can offer to both residents and visitors. Coronavirus update Morocco became the second African country after Egypt this week to detect the presence of the new Coronavirus (COVID-19). In addition, Latin America also reported its first case in Brazil. Mainland China has reported 839 new cases on Monday and Tuesday. At the time of going to press yesterday the number of infected people in China stood at 78 497. The death toll for China mainland surpassed the 2 744 mark. Meanwhile, the Coronavirus has now been detected in 33 countries outside China, with the Islamic Republic of Iran, South Korea and Italy among the worst hit. The death toll outside China has been surpassing the 50 people mark. Continues on page 2
The Dolphin Schools taken over by South Africa’s Curro Group The South African private schools company, Curro, is taking over the Dolphin Schools in Walvis Bay. The acquisition of the Dolphins Schools would bring to two now Namibian schools which joined the Curo stable. The first school to be taken over was the Windhoek Gymnasium. Curro is a South African company listed on the Johannesburg Securities Exchange (JSE). According to information on the company's website, Curro operates 59 private secondary schools and 158 primary schools in South Africa [and Namibia]. It has more than 52 000 pupils on the books.
Shoprite Namibia confirmed this week all branches countrywide removed from the shop shelves 400g canned pilchards with the codes ZST29 or ZSC29 after a possible canning deficiency was detected on some of these products. The brands affected were: Cape Point, Saldanha, West Point, Deep Catch, Shoprite Ritebrand, Checkers Housebrand, U-brand, Spar, Mamma’s, Sunny and OK Housebrand. All wholesalers, retailers and informal traders in SADC have been instructed to remove the mentioned canned pilchard brands from the shelves. Shoprite Namibia's head office confirmed yesterday to the Namib Times all canned pilchard products have been removed from the shelves. Other countries where the brands were also removed from the shelves are in Lesotho, Swaziland and Nigeria. The National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications (NRCS) confirmed the canned pilchards at the centre of a widespread recall was exported to countries outside of South Africa. These countries include Lesotho, Namibia, Swaziland and Nigeria. Consumers, who have purchased canned pilchards in tomato sauce and in chili sauce are urged to check the tin's code. If it starts with ZST29 or ZSC29, they must return it for a full refund. Manufacturer and food supplier, West Food Processors situated in Cape Town recalled the 400-gram tins of pilchards in tomato sauce over the weekend due to a “canning deficiency” that could result in food poisoning. The cans were scratched by the machine while it was being filled with sauce. The problem manifests itself after months of storage, which causes the content of the can to react with the metal of the can. The NRCS regulates the manufacture, production and treatment of canned fish and fishery products as part of the Compulsory Specifications (VC8014).
