Swakopmund airport to Education Erongo its be relocated North of town speaks mind inside

Isaac Chikosi

Swakopmund's new structure plan will make provision for the total relocation of the Swakopmund aerodrome to a location north of the town's boundaries. Although the new structure plan makes provision for that, the town's public need to be consulted as part of a compulsory public consultation process. According to council documents, the relocation will entail an entirely new airport facility complete with new runways, air traffic control tower, aircraft hangars, commercial buildings and a terminal building. Air safety is one of the major concerns which prompted the think tank to relocate the aerodrome and to use the land it is currently occupying for other developmental needs. The Namibia Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) will be instrumental in laying out requirements and standards for such a new air facility. The Swakopmund airfield may not possess the same strategic function of the Walvis Bay International Aiport, but is the hub of Namibia's tourism aviation (pleasure flights) and recreational activities like skydiving.

Major ports of Newly elected mayor on his tenure as “citizen number one” entry to monitor Isaac Chikosi Pressing economic times is also hitting Swakopmund's demand for high value land. That is according to newly elected Mayor Nehemia Solomon who sat down with Namib Times to outline his vision for the holiday town in his tenure as citizen number one. “My vision for our town is to nurture our city to a great jewel of excellence metropolitan city. I believe with the help of committed employees of the municipality of Swakopmund, we will be able to achieve this goal”, Salomon said in broad overview. On the issue of unemployment and poverty, Salomon said efforts made by council, such as the recently inaugurated Germina Shitaleni Multipurpose Centre in Mondesa for entrepreneurs and the launch of the street vendor market, are there to assist in job creation and poverty reduction. Low rentals are charged on entrepreneurs to use these facilities, raising the bar for income generation. Also in the pipeline is an SME Industrial Park to accommodate business owners who are now operating from their homes. Swakopmund, according to Clr Nehemia, has

an investment profile with one goal: to attract and promote investment in the town. Speaking on land delivery, Salomon explained Swakopmund has its own peculiar situation with regard to this burning question. When it comes to high value land, the municipality of Swakopmund prefers to service the land and then sell it off at profits which are then utilised for servicing land to lower income groups. However, with the demand for higher value land very depressed due to prevailing economic conditions, that hampers land delivery to lower income tiers. “Land delivery requires enormous financial input. Council thus services land with its financial resources supplemented by Government subsidies especially in low income areas. Council furthermore adopted the approach many years ago of first developing infrastructure for

Namibia's health authority made good of its promise last week to update the nation regarding the China coronavirus (nCOV) outbreak which has now spread to several countries in Asia, Australia, the United States, Europe and Latin America. In a statement over the weekend the Ministry of Health and Social Services confirmed alerts were sent out to all regional health offices which include information on the coronavirus, detection and management. Health facilities, specifically laboratories and hospitals were called upon to strengthen capacity to detect possible cases, to test for the virus and treatment. “Close monitoring of the situation with intensified surveillance is underway. Specifically at main international ports of entry to ensure prompt case detection and response”, the statement reads. It is expected that major ports of entry like Hosea

Where necessary, the person or persons would be tested and treated. Meanwhile, in China a lockdown of several cities, targeting more than 50 million people, remains in place. Specifically the city of Wuhan in central China, the epicentre of the outbreak, and other cities in close proximity to Wuhan. High speed rail transport and the use of private vehicles are forbidden in the locked down cities, to discourage people movement on a large scale. No public gatherings are allowed. Apart from the cities where there are targeted interventions, many theme parks, open air concerts and other events where people congregate in large numbers were cancelled across mainland China. The high speed rail link between mainland China and the autonomous island of Hong Kong was also suspended to curb the movement of people. At the time of going to press the nCOV death toll stood at 81 people dead and 2744 confirmed cases. Countries other than China where patients tested positive for nCOV are: Japan, Thailand, Korea, Singapore, Philippines, USA, Australia, Mexico and France, Malaysia, Taiwan, Vietnam, Macau and Nepal. The number of countries where there are positive tests for the corona virus is expected to grow. ESTATE NOTICE

Shack fire in DRC - residents throw stones at firemen....

An informal dwelling in Swakopmund's DRC was destroyed in a fire Sunday afternoon. The fire caused a nearby structure to also catch fire. Municipal fire and rescue services were called to the scene to assist. Sadly, they were greeted by angry residents throwing them with stones. Firefighters claim when they got to the scene disgruntled residents in the area hurled stones at them, compromising their safety. Chief Fire Officer Adri Goosen confirmed the incident. Goosen could not shed more light into the matter. The department is investigating the actions of the day. The cause of the fire has not been confirmed yet. Meanwhile, residents are urged to exercise constraint. No matter what the frustrations are, it is unacceptable and also a criminal act to throw stones at emergency services personnel and for that matter throwing stones at any person.

Lüderitz Marine Research reports on its social media platform that Lüderitz is currently experiencing a huge increase in Sandwich tern population. These birds are summer visitors. But among those many birds there is one particular one tagged as “KJ6”. It was ringed as an adult male in June 2016 in Norfolk, England. Since, “KJ6” was spotted at Lüderitz during three consecutive times: February 2018, December 2018, on December 2019 and now on 12 January at Grosse Bucht. “KJ6” and his colony of fellow Sandwich tern has to fly around 10 800 kilometers [one way] to be able to visit Lüderitz. It will continue these journeys, either to Europe or South America for the duration of its life. Note: preferred habitats include a sandy and rocky coastline, with shallow sandy bottomed bays with clear water. They roost on river mouth beaches, on offshore islands and at saltworks. Bathing in shallow water with a gentle wave action is favoured to swimming. Sandwich terns bread around Europe and South America. (Source: The Cardboard Box Travel Shop).

Walvis Bay Pairs competition The ever so popular Walvis Bay Pairs competition was played recently in excellent weather conditions and a good field of 24 teams (48 players) teed it up for the honours of being the local Pairs Champions of 2020. The event was generously sponsored by Luanda Logistics and comprised of 9 holes foursomes, 9 holes Betterball and then the killer – 9 holes Combined medal. At the end of the day, the hot favorite team of Wouter van Wijk and Piet van Niekerk overcame all the 'sorry partner' cries of despair to win on a total net score of 137.25 (yes you need a calculator for this format … LOL). Runners-up were the second favorites, Gunther Heitmann and Quinton van Wijk on 139.5 followed by Wynand

Breytenbach and Jaco Greeff on 141. Other prize winners were: 4th Renier Bosman & Danie v Antwerpen (142.75). 5th Jonathan and Grant Mather (143) and 6th Tienie de Wet and Bertie Coetzee (143.25) Prizes were also handed out to the best 4 somes, best Betterball and Best Combined Medal scores as well as to Best gross on the day (just to keep Willie quiet..). The Joker is still out there as Nadia Weitz also failed to convert her N$10 ticket into N$65 000 and the pool is surely heading for N$70 000 this Friday! The winning team, Wouter van Wijk and Piet van Niekerk with Club Captain Tienie de Wet
