Peter Shalulile is Namibia’s hero, as he was the scorer of the winning goal in the dying minutes of the game. After trailing 2-1 during the first half, the Warriors came back to win the semi-final match, 3-2. They will now face either Botswana or Mozambique. The whole of Namibia is

in a state of joy and pride, since the National team managed to book a place in this prestigious tournament, way back in 1999. Coach Ricardo Mannetti is the man of the hour and will certainly want to bring the Cosafa Cup back home. Omake! Omake to Brave Warriors!

Ganaseb’s co-accused, Ruddy Hinanifa, appeared in the Swakopmund Regional court this week and was released on bail of N$50 000. The case relates from a tender which was awarded to Re-Birth Investment cc, which Hinanifa represents. According to a reliable source this tender was worth more than N$6 million and entailed the tarring of roads in Omaruru. It was awarded to Re-Birth Investment during 2012.

The newspaper was informed that an amount of N$962 247.50 was claimed by Hinanifa during December the same year, while the town’s councillors was on recess. Apparently Ganaseb, in his capacity as CEO of the town, approved the claim on his own. The project’s consultant was allegedly not informed about the claim and/ or payment to Hinanifa. It was explained to the newspaper that in such instances, the consultant must

issue a payment certificate, signed by him. Ganaseb was supposed to appear along with Hinanifa, but since he is not arrested yet, the case was postponed until 6 July 2015. “The money is gone, and the roads are still not tarred,” our source noted. The former CEO was arrested during December last year at Omaruru, regarding allegations of cattle theft and forgery. His arrest followed after he allegedly altered with a Continues on page 2

have cast a long shadow over football and this Congress,” said Blatter, who is standing for a fifth mandate as FIFA president in Friday’s election, where Prince Ali bin Al Hussein of Jordan is his only challenger. Ignoring calls to step down, Blatter said: “I know many people hold me ultimately responsible ... (but) I cannot monitor everyone all the time. If people want to do wrong, they will also try to hide it.” Platini said 45 or 46 of UEFA’s 53 member associations would vote for Prince Ali. But it appeared that Blatter still commanded enough of FIFA’s 209 national associations to secure victory. Blatter appeared confident despite the dawn raid by plainclothes police on Wednesday that left seven of the most powerful figures in football in Swiss custody and facing extradition to the United States on corruption charges.

They are all contesting extradition, but lawyers said the process could be completed within months. Swiss authorities have also announced a criminal investigation into the awarding of the next two World Cups, which are being hosted in Russia in 2018 and Qatar in 2022. U.S. authorities said nine football officials and five sports media and promotions executives faced corruption charges involving more than $150 million in bribes. Both Qatar and Moscow have denied any suggestion of wrongdoing over their bids to host one of the world’s top sporting events, and Russian President Vladimir Putin accused the United States on Thursday of meddling in an effort to prevent the re-election of Blatter. “This is yet another blatant attempt to extend its jurisdiction to other states,” Putin said, adding that Russia would continue to support Blatter. The evening was billed as a rather more subdued affair than normal under the banner “Game of Joy, Game of Hope” with dancers and musicians on stage followed by a grand buffet afterwards. The serious business starts on this morning in Zurich’s Hallenstadion, which is where the announcement of the 2018 and 2022 World Cup venues was made in 2010 -- decisions which lie at the heart of much of FIFA’s current malaise. With splits opening in the world game, the Asian and African confederations backed Blatter for president, while Western nations said he must go. French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said the vote should be delayed in light

of the corruption investigation. British Prime Minister David Cameron backed Prince Ali’s candidacy and said there was a strong case for a change of leadership at FIFA. Britain has long been a critic of FIFA and bid for the 2018 World Cup which was awarded to Russia. Les Murray of Australia, a former FIFA ethics committee member, also called for Blatter to resign. Meanwhile blue-chip sponsors, many of whom have solidly backed FIFA despite nearly 20 years of bribery and corruption allegations, appeared to be growing concerned at events unfolding in Zurich. In a strongly worded statement, credit card giant Visa said: “It is important that FIFA makes changes now, so that the focus remain on

these going forward. Should FIFA fail to do so, we have informed them that we will reassess our sponsorship.” German sportswear company Adidas said FIFA should do more to establish transparent compliance standards. Anheuser-Busch InBev, whose Budweiser brand is a sponsor of the 2018 World Cup, said it was closely monitoring developments. Coca-Cola Co, another sponsor, said the charges had “tarnished the mission and ideals of the FIFA World Cup and we have repeatedly expressed our concerns about these serious allegations.” (Reporting by Mike Collett; Writing by Giles Elgood; Editing by Peter Millership and Crispian Balmer) NAMPA / REUTERS

So, dit was ‘n baie besondere verjaarsdag vir Damian,” sê Roshwita Sagner.” “Hy het tydens die

operasie 'n trombose ontwikkel. Ek het by geleenthede baie hulpeloos gevoel. Ek was ook baie bang by tye oor Damian se medikasie se newe-effekte. Hy kon by elke stamp binne bloeding opdoen

of breinbloedings as hy sy kop stamp.

Cloud hangs over case of alleged sexual offender Madelaine Laubscher Dragan Vujicin (63) has been accused of allegedly sexually abusing four minors. He appeared in the Swakopmund Magistrate court yesterday for a trial date to be scheduled but the case has been postponed due to technical errors. He is facing charges relating to the alleged abuse of four girls aged between seven and nine years old. His arrest followed an incident

whereby he allegedly sexually assaulted a minor, while he was alone with several children. In court yesterday, it was understood that the accused’s fingerprints were not printed on the docket. Therefore the state requested that the case be postponed. According to Magistrate Hannelie Prinsloo, she failed to understand why this matter should affect making a final decision on this case,

as the case has been dragged on for a long period of time. However, she granted a postponement in order for the investigating officer to sort out the error regarding the fingerprints. A trusted source told the namib times that she has also been a victim of Vujicin. “He is a dangerous sexual predator and he needs to be held accountable for what he has done, because I

have to live with what he did. The suffering does not end after the abuse stops,” the source said. In a previous article the newspaper learnt that one of the complainants and several friends alleged that they were touched on their private parts by the accused. Battle over phosphate

Referring to the text of the front page article in The Namibian of 27 May FISHERIES Minister has warned the government against “blindly” giving approval to companies that want to mine marine phosphate, saying the country's long term future should matter more. Bernard Esau told The Namibian yesterday that he is aware of lobbying so that one of the companies, the Namibian Marine Phosphate (NMP), interested in mining phosphate and others get the green light to do so. The Fisheries Minister's comments come about a week after the Minister Of Mines Obeth Kandjoze said, since the phosphate mining moratorium imposed in September 2013 expired in March this year, government should allow those with licences to start mining activities. Kandjoze also said the moratoriums would have no legal standing if they were challenged in court by companies given licences to mine phoshate. But Esau said he is aware of new Namibia partners in NMP, which is a joint venture between Omanowned Mawarid Mining LLC and the Namibian company Havana Investments. Havana Investments, which is owned by exploration middleman Knowledge Katti, replaced Tungeni Investments in the NMP shareholding structure. The directors of NMP which plans to mine in Walvis Bay's coastal area, are Katti and Tariq Al Barwani and Sushil Srivastava. Katti paraded the Oman businessmen at the inauguration of President Hage Geingob at the Independence Stadium in Windhoek in March. The Namibian understands that extensive lobbying has been taking place over the past few months for

those in power to approve the controversial phosphate project. “Equity change should not mean government will have to blindly give things just like that. We must think long term and not short term,” Esau said. The businesspeople from Oman, an Arab country on the southeastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula, bought the company from Australian firm Minemakers for N$228 million. Leviev Group, which is owned by Israeli diamond dealer Lev Leviev, also wants to mine phosphate. Esau said the government should do a cost-benefit analysis to determine whether the phosphate project will harm the industry or not. The fishing sector directly employs over 13 000 people and around 200 000 if the number is expanded to net makers, repairs and maintenance of vessels, packing and stevedores. Phosphate mining is estimated to be able to create around 500 jobs during the construction phase and employ 150 workers when the project starts. 200 indirect jobs are expected to be created for the controversial sea mining. Unlike the fishing industry which pumps N$5 billion into the economy, the phosphate plan is expected to contribute N$3 billion per year. The fisheries ministry believes that Namibia is taking a risk because phosphate mining in the ocean has never been done anywhere in the world and Namibia would be the first

country to do so. “They are planning to mine on fish breeding grounds; this may affect the recovery of fish stocks,” Esau said in 2013. Esau yesterday said that a ministerial meeting is scheduled to take place tomorrow with Environment Minister Pohamba Shifeta and Mines Minister Kandjoze. The ministers will be briefed by a team of experts that undertook a study since a ban on phosphate was approved by Cabinet close to 20 months ago. The ban on bulk sea-bed mining of the fertiliser material was meant to address environmental risks and Norwegian Institute of Marine Research and Sintef were commissioned to conduct a study. Asked on the issue of the moratorium expiring on 17 March this year, Esau said the position of government on phosphate mining is still the same and that the decision will have to be made by Cabinet and not a minister. Esau said it is from that meeting that recommendations will be taken for a Cabinet submission to be compiled on whether to ban phosphate or allow the mining companies to go ahead. The Cabinet submission is expected to be tabled three weeks from now, Esau said. Esau also suggested the company planning to mine phosphate should do a comprehensive environmental study and not a desktop computer based study. Kandjoze is a known friend of businessman Katti but sources said the two have clashed over several issues. It is not clear the issue of phosphate mining is among the issues that have led to the clash between the two men. Meanwhile, sources from the fishing sector have

complained of being kept in the dark about the process of deciding whether phosphate is a good option or not. Those in the know said several documents are being kept away from them

NAMIB TIMES so that they cannot analyse them themselves. Former president of the chamber of mines Werner Duvenhage said the mining industry was concerned that 18 months had passed since the moratorium was passed on phosphate mining. “The chamber remains concerned that the 18-month period of the Cabinet moratorium on marine phosphate mining which was

declared on 17 September 2013 lapsed in March without much progress on the desired scientific studies to address concerns by the fishing industry. “The Sentef consultants from Norway engaged by the government have only produced a scoping report,” Duvenhage said. He said while the govern-ment is committed to the coexistence of several sectors

Obtain a permit from the Namibian Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources (MFMR) to catch fish or dive for crayfish and respect harvesting limitations. WHY? The marine resources are limited and currently some of them are overfished or over collected. It is necessary that everybody uses them wisely and carefully to secure the future harvesting needs by protecting the stock. Quantity/number of marine resources harvestable, minimum size limits of fish and crayfish that can be caught, open season etc. help to manage stocks to avoid the total disappearance of some species in our waters. Do not leave bait or fish on the beach! Either take it home or return it to the sea. This food attracts scavengers like jackals and gulls that prey on other bio-diversity. When you are back home after the holiday, it also inflates the predator population. Where can you get a license for angling, crayfish diving & bait/mussels collection?

Botswana Dry Port "Disappointing" "Much more work and marketing needed" - High commissioner Mavourlene Gaes Tshenolo Modise, Botswana High Commissioner to Namibia, addressed her concerns regarding the standard of development and the under-utilisation of the Botswana Dry Port in Walvis Bay. She expressed these concerns at an investment and trade workshop held by the Botswana Investment and Trade Centre (BITC) at a local hotel.

The workshop was attended by representatives of the TransKalahari Corridor Secretariat, Walvis Bay Corridor group, Namport as well as Sea Rail Botswana that were left in charge of managing the Botswana Dry Port in Namibia, clearing agencies and entrepreneurs of Botswana. According to Modise the “worrying underutilisation and embarrassing condition of the Botswana Dry Port” has led the Botswana High Commission to Namibia to host a twoday workshop to create awareness on the business opportunities offered to the private sector, by the Port facility in Walvis Bay. The dry port has cost around N$60 million to build. “The prevailing situation is of great concern to us because the Government of Botswana as a key stakeholder, made a significant investment in the facility through its development and continues to pay considerable

monthly rental for the lease of the land and the problems the port experiences are leaving the impression that they have bit off more than they can chew,” Modise said. She added that the utilisation of the Botswana Dry Port facility to its full capacity will go a long way in providing assurance to Namibia (as host), that the provision of a sea port to a land-locked neighbour for access to international markets, was not in vain. She regretted the lack of marketing of the port. She said marketing could have played a major role in the development of the port facilities. “When they developed the Botswana dry port they overlooked the importance of marketing it to companies in Botswana as well as in Namibia as a result the companies still continue to use the routes through South Africa. I think we should provide the companies with infor-

Hotel Schweizerhaus and Café Anton celebrate half-century Amukwaya, 22 years,

The owner of the local landmark, Hotel Schweizerhaus and the popular Café Anton, Heidi Snyman, was very busy when namib times visited her this week to talk about the milestone - there was a lot to do before today. Tonight they will celebrate the 50 very successful years of this family business. Heidi's father, Manfred Anton, came to Swakopmund in 1954, after the war. He was 24, and a master baker and confectioner and worked for Putensen Bakery. Her mother, Helma Jansen, came to Swakopmund in 1956, and worked at the Strand Café, were they met. They got married in 1958 and bought the property in 1965. Heidi says she has wonderful memories of the old house in which her parents started their business. Originally there were only four guest rooms on the first floor, each with a name – the Balcony room, the Blue room, and the

North and East room. The family stayed on the ground floor. “It was the most wonderful place for a child….it had a huge loft room, and we spent our days playing there,” she says with a soft smile and sparkling eyes. The guesthouse got another four rooms and the café, which were inaugurated in May 1966. Later, the Anton's demolished the old house, and built another nine rooms. In 1981 Heidi's mother got very ill, and with Heidi, who was then working for South African Airways and engaged to André Snyman, also working at SAA, came home to assist her

parents. The couple got married in 1982, and André joined her in May of that year, as permanent member of the formidable team. After Independence, the senior team handed the responsibility over to Heidi and André Snyman. After André's death in 1998 she continued on her own. She says one of the positive forces of the successful business, is the incredible team of employees. “Many of them have been with the business for between 20 and 30 years. “Andreas Shilongo, a waiter for 30 years, Magda Basson, more than 20 years, Sara Sakeus, 25 years, David

Olga Naibas, 24 years and Paulus Shindume, 21 years. Then there's Junius Wilpard, our confectioner for 22 years, who knows every recipe by heart. André taught him everything there was to know about baking, and he taught his helpers, Johannes Nambuli (working here for 17 years) and Jonas Uuthemo, who's been with us now for 13 years. And then I have to mention our two fantastic managers, Shaheed Abrahams and Johan Swarts. They are all like family. And we deeply appreciate them and their contribution over the

years.” Since 2007, Heidi and André's daughter Silvia, who studied hotel management, has been part of the team, too. In 2010, their second daughter, Desirée, who is a passionate baker, too, also

joined the team. For visitors to Swakopmund, and locals alike, Café Anton has been one of the beacons in town. Heidi says Hotel Schweizerhaus receive most of its visitors from Namibia, South Africa

and Germany. Heidi says they look back on 50 years with much gratitude – and will work hard to keep serving the community and visitors, with the same dedication and passion.

The police officer who lost her life last week after being run over at the roadblock between Walvis Bay and Swakopmund by Delfina Meyer, has been identified. According to Nampol Deputy Commissioner Kashuupulwa, the constable has been identified as Yvonne Ochurus.

Besides the obvious cause of these incidents, ( crossing the solid barrier line in the middle of the road), this road junction is totally inadequate for the volume of traffic and the size of the vehicles using it. The bypass lane to the left is too short and too narrow. In addition, the white poles and cable barrier (which to me serves absolutely no purpose) which extends from north of the quad bike business to just south of the junction, is far too close to the road. There is no space for any vehicle to move off the road if a breakdown occurs. I, myself, was rear ended by another vehicle at this junction while waiting to turn off to Longbeach, at night, at the end of January this year. Although this barrier is unlikely to stop a vehicle from driving off the road if you wanted to get out of someone’s way, the mere fact that the barrier is there has caused motorists to turn into the oncoming lane instead of crashing through the barrier. Such an incident occurred four days after my incident when a taxi did a

U-turn at this junction and the vehicle behind managed to stop, but the vehicle behind that one could not stop in time and, instead of driving off the road to the left it turned into the oncoming lane and hit a vehicle driving in that lane. A further complicating factor is that, just south of the junction the road dips down and this dip is large enough to hide a vehicle travelling north. Impatient motorists do not notice this and, notwithstanding the solid barrier line, then try to overtake. The only solution that can work to slow the traffic down and make this junction safe to build an traffic circle on it. Traffic circles are acknowledged, world wide, to be the safest way to enable traffic from different directions to pass each other. The reasons being: The traffic does not cross each other and travels in

the same direction. All traffic is forced to adhere to a low maximum speed. U-turns across traffic is eliminated - the cause of numerous collisions in the past, mainly by WB taxis. Indeed, the other junctions to Longbeach, Dolphin beach and Afrodite Beach should also have traffic circles. Even if the B2 at these junctions fall under the Roads Authority, The Walvis Bay Municipality should just go ahead and put in the traffic circle. The cost would be minimal. Another suggestion is to make it compulsory for all vehicles travelling on the road between SWK and WB to drive with their headlights on. Far too many motorists are not responsible enough to be able to decide for themselves that the conditions warrant switching their lights on. Chris King

ViiV Healthcare and CHAI collaboration delivers second milestone with first filing with the FDA of generic dolutegravir by Aurobindo Pharma for the treatment of HIV

ViiV Healthcare (http://www.viivhealthcare.com), Aurobindo Pharma (http://www.aurobindo.com), and the Clinton Health Access Initiative, Inc. (CHAI) (http:// www.clintonhealthaccess.org) announced today that Aurobindo Pharma has submitted an Abbreviated New Drug Application (ANDA) for dolutegravir 50mg, for Tentative Approval, to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), for the treatment of HIV. This is the first ANDA for a generic version of dolutegravir, less than two years after FDA approval of Tivicay® (dolutegravir) for sale in the United States. Upon receiving Tentative Approval from the FDA, Aurobindo Pharma will be able to supply dolutegravir 50mg via the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) programme, following completion of required

local regulatory approval process, in the licensed countries outside of the United States, as per the agreement signed between Aurobindo Pharma and ViiV Healthcare in 2014. This submission comes less than five years after

ViiV Healthcare and CHAI signed an agreement to collaborate with the goal of bringing innovative formulations of medicines for the treatment and prevention of HIV/AIDS to people living with HIV in developing countries, on an affordable yet sustainable basis. CHAI and ViiV Healthcare worked together to identify a generic partner after conducting feasibility research. Following this initial joint work, ViiV Healthcare submitted necessary documentation to the FDA providing a selective waiver letter for the

five-year period of New Chemical Entity (NCE) exclusivity that would have otherwise prevented FDA review and Tentative Approval of Aurobindo Pharma’s ANDA at this time. Dr Dominique Limet, CEO, ViiV Healthcare, said: “This first ANDA for a generic dolutegravir confirms that our strong commitment to thinking and acting differently to pursue new ways to expand access to our medicines, for people living with HIV in countries where the need is most pressing, is working.” David Ripin, PhD, Execu-

tive Vice President, and Chief Scientific Officer, CHAI, said: “UNAIDS has set global public health goals calling for 90 percent of those who are HIVpositive to know their status, 90 percent of those identified to be linked to treatment programs, and 90 percent of those in treatment to achieve undetectable viral load. To tackle these complex challenges, targeted efforts to facilitate access to HIV treatment medicines, such as dolutegravir, are needed.” N Govindarajan, Managing Director, Aurobindo Phar-

ma, said: “We are pleased to be part of this innovative partnership designed to accelerate access to medicines for treating HIV. Aurobindo Pharma is committed to HIV care and aims to achieve the goals of wider access to HIV treatment, care, and support; seeking to address the spread of HIV through development of this newer class of drugs and fixed-dose combinations for low- and middle-income countries.” The filing by Aurobindo Pharma is the second result of the agreement between CHAI and ViiV Health-

care and comes less than six months after another generic manufacturer announced that it had received Tentative Approval from the FDA for paediatric formulations of another ViiV Healthcare antiretroviral (also under PEPFAR for sale in licensed countries outside of the United States), through innovative collaboration with ViiV Healthcare and CHAI. Distributed by APO (African Press Organization) on behalf of ViiV Healthcare, Aurobindo Pharma, and the Clinton Health Access Initiative, Inc. (CHAI).

Are you using the right size condom? The HIV-virus is transmitted through contact with body fluids; breast milk; vaginal fluids; semen; and blood; including menstrual blood. This means that one of the ways HIV is transmitted, is through sexual intercourse with an infected partner. If you do not know your status and that of your partner, it is advisable to use a condom – and it can be a male, in case of the male wearing it, or else a female condom (femidom) if the female is the one wearing the protection.

The Smiley condoms that are distributed free in Namibia also come in different sizes, as well as the other brands that are sold in the shops. A nurse recently explained to the District Aids Committee in Arandis, that using a condom that is too big for your manhood, can result in the condom slipping off during intercourse. When a small condom is used for larger size manhood, this can result in the condom bursting during intercourse and exposing couples to risks of contracting HIV and other

sexually transmitted infections. Therefore, it is very important that, whenever you use a condom, men should use the correct size for their manhood, for maximum protection. What we encourage people to do, is to always practice safe sex. If you have had unprotected sex, always go for an HIV test and make sure that you go back after the three-month window period. Your HIV status can be determined as early as three weeks after an unprotected sex encounter. The female condom The female condom (femi dom) is available in one size only. NIED and Finnish-Namibian Society launches arts and crafts manual More than 13 years after Cabinet approved a Policy on Arts and Culture, the first manual for primary school teachers in Namibia on the subject was launched on Tuesday. on her behalf that the Finnish-Na mibian Society signed an agreement with the National Institute for Educational Development (NIED) in 2006 to further support the implementation and promotion of arts, handicrafts and culture in the Namibian education system. “The development of the manual was a rigorous process. The manual was developed over two years

and nine months through workshops with teachers, discussions with the NIED Art panel members and other individuals who have interest in arts and crafts education. “Many activities were carried out during the programme to promote and support the implementation of arts and crafts education in the education system,” she noted.

The draft manual was tried out in workshops with teachers and schools several times, and was found relevant to the Namibian classroom realities. The manual is practical and user-friendly, according to HanseHimarwa. The content is contextualised; provides information on the importance of arts and crafts education on the development of mental functions

Speaking at the event, the Minister of Education, Arts and Culture Katrina Hanse-Himarwa said in a speech delivered

(Fltr) The Deputy Permanent Secretary for Formal Education in the Ministry of Education Charles Kabajani, Ambassador of Finland to Namibia Anne Saloranta, and the Chairperson of the Finnish-Namibia Society Seppo Kalliokoski, at the launch of the Manual: Arts and Crafts - a manual for teachers in Namibia

of children; contains practical and relevant classroom activities; provides instructions for a wide range of activities; provides information on the teaching methodology of crafts and visual arts lessons; and provides information on how to use simple, recycled and economical materials and tools. About 1 200 teachers were trained during the project. “Arts subjects are important in our education system. Art education strength-

ens children’s thinking and creativity. Arts and crafts education supports the learning of Mathematics, reading and writing as well as helps learners to control their own lives in developing their ability to solve problems,” she added. Speaking at the same occasion, the Ambassador of Finland to Namibia, Anne Saloranta, emphasised that in today’s diverse society, it is important to nurture cultural pride and awareness, and main-

tain cultural heritage in terms of arts and crafts. “Studies have shown that there is a correlation between arts and other achievements. Young people who participate regularly in arts are more likely to be recognised for academic achievement than children, who do not participate,” she said. The manual was made possible with the support from the Finnish-Namibian Society and NIED. NAMPA

Vaccinations for FMD to save meat industry cines will be required, with the immediate vaccination to be done as soon as it’s available; the second round within 30 days after the first one; and the third round to be administered within one year thereafter. Speaking at the same occasion, Agriculture Minister John Mutorwa said the total budget for the whole exercise is more than N$208 million. He said Government gave the green light to the ministry to act with immediate effect after a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday. All funds for the immediate intervention are from the 2015/2016 budget of the ministry. Expenses include FMD vaccine purchase; vaccination equipment; laboratory expenses; protective clothing; camping equipment; road block equipment; about 40 4x4 vehicles; overtime payments; and casual labour. “If we fail, then the whole beef industry can be in jeopardy. As a result, Cabinet is of the view and decided that the permanent solution to control the outbreak of the animal disease in the north-central regions of Namibia is the erection of a fence between Namibia and Angola to control the movement of animals between the two countries,” he noted. There will be designated veterinary control points, where such animals must be allowed to move, strictly under control, said Mutorwa. The cost of the fence is estimated at more than N$51 million. The MAWF has designated as a containment area the larger part of the north-central areas, north of the B1 main road from Oshivelo to Oshikango and from Oshivelo to Katwitwi. Here, surveillance of

further cases will be undertaken and any movement of cattle will be restricted, he said. The minisrty will erect temporary roadblocks along the main roads to control the movement of cattle to other areas. Officials from the ministry will man these roadblocks, with the assistance of the Namibian Police Force and other law-enforcement agencies. Sufficient human resource is also needed to assist with the vaccination exercise and the Meat Board of Namibia will provide 250 casual workers, as well as about N$6 million towards the FMD illumination exercise. The first cases of FMD were detected at the Ondama Yomunghete crush pen on 11 May 2015 and at the Okalupalona and Onehanga crush pens on 12 May 2015. The second case was detected on 13 May 2015 at the Okakango village in the Okankolo constituency in the Oshikoto Region. The MAWF further confirmed that in all cases reported, cattle from Namibia came in contact with cattle grazing in some parts of the Cuando Cubango Province of Angola. As a result of the outbreak, the MAWF imposed a ban on the marketing of cattle and cattle products in the north-central regions of Namibia. The movement of animals have also been restricted and abattoirs in those regions are negatively affected. Areas where FMD cases have been detected are: the whole of the Ohangwena Region, Oshikoto Region including the Okankolo constituency, Onyaanya constituency north of the B1 road, Omuthiya constitu-

FMD is spread by the movement of infected animals and animal products, including contaminated vehicles, clothes, shoes and other objects. Half a million vaccines were expected to arrive from the Botswana Vaccine Institute yesterday, said Deputy Director of Animal Disease Control in the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Forestry (MAWF), Dr John Shoopala. “This is a challenge. FMD is not only in these two constituencies (Okongo in Ohangwena Region and Okankolo in the Oshikoto Region), but is now in the Omusati Region as well. “It is also suspected in the Kunene Region.FMD is also moving westwards now,” he warned during a media conference on Wednesday. WALVIS BAY

Uniquely Namibian ‘Brown Paper Bag’ - here ‘Ollie’, Doane, Wayne and Edward perform at the Lighthouse Pub

rocks coastal fans

They have been dubbed the best blue/rock band in Namibia. And this past weekend ‘Brown Paper Bag’ grew an even bigger fan base when they pulled out all their ‘stomp’, in a number of rock-solid shows at the coast, emphasising that the power of live music in this country is neither gone, nor forgotten. During two separate performances held at Walvis Bay’s ‘Sarah’s Se Gat,’ and the recently transformed Lighthouse Pub in Swakopmund, the guys were unstoppable, as they delivered a set of high-octane blues/rock numbers that lifted the lid on what music fans can still expect from these lads. Whilst the four-piece band has been flying mostly under the radar, popping up here

and there for live performances, they have recently fast-forwarded themselves to the top of the music scene, despite the fact that all four members are from different towns, and still live apart. Yet, putting down a two-hour set of live non-stop music for the band who share little practise time is no sweat. In fact, these boys just need a stage, their instruments, a few string tunes here

and there, and they are good to go. Brown Paper Bag was formed in Swakopmund three years ago, when front-man singer/songwriter Doane Madeheim hooked up with the three other members, Edward Taylor on bass, Wayne Wentzel on drums and Oliver Reissner - better known as ‘Ollie’ - on blues harmonica, and has since merged into one the tightest knit groups on the local music scene.

The members’ tangible on-stage chemistry, and the playing ability of each band member, has cemented what is fast becoming one of the country’s most talkedabout groups. They describe their genre as “old school dirty blues/rock,” belting out a powerful sound that sets them apart from the rest - whilst reaching a wide audience base. From their ‘kick-ass’ rendition of Steppen-

wolf’s ‘Born to be Wild’, to an all-original ‘Dirty Black Money,’ audiences are kept entertained by the boys, who clearly play for the love of it. All four band members will agree to one thing: having such an incredible music connection between them, they foresee still making music together, when they are “old and grey.” Contributed by Donna Collins

Mit Haltestellen in u.a.

PTA Tennis Series

29 MAY 2015

The PTA Tennis Series celebrated a successful return to action during the third tournament of the season last weekend in the capital. Twenty-one players made their way to the tennis courts of the Windhoek High School (WHS) to battle it out for the ranking points one which bases the overall winners will be determined at the end of the season. The mini-category saw Jamilla Hungamo celebrate her second win in succession to take over the lead on top of the table. With the absence of Hungamo's biggest rival to date, Eila Kambonde, the second place went to Jozikee Tjaimba while Rejoice Nawases had to settle for third. In the beginner's category Alwera Smith celebrated her first win in emphatic fashion. She edged past Faith Kahuure and Delicia Dirkse who had also been in contention for the top spot during the first two events. Kahuure and Dirkse made second and third place respectively. Meanwhile Cleet Farmer won the intermediate category ahead of Mike Kam-bonde and Brandon Maasdorp. Maasdorp had won the two previous events and he is expected to come out guns blazing in the next tournament to get back to winning ways. More information on the PTA Tennis Series is avail-able from Romeo van Wyk at romeo@protennisacademy.com.na or 081 234 9523. The PTA Tennis Series is the only series of tennis tournaments in Namibia where the participants play according to your skill level and not their age.

Tsumeb vs Walvis Bay Since 2002 this interclub competition has been played in Walvis Bay and Tsumeb every year. A battle between two towns on the golf course that resulted in the two clubs to become close friends and comrades over the years. Certainly something special for all those that take part every year, a trip never to be missed. Friday evening Tsumeb once again entertained our players and friends with a great steak braai. The Tsumeb hosts prepared succulent steaks, chips and salads that was just lovely. Deon Klynsmith this time around actually had his steak and there was no need to send it to Walvis Bay. You see Deon, we told you those steaks are great. Ten teams of Walvis Bay travelled to Tsumeb last weekend, Walvis Bay being behind by one event since 2002. They had to face fierce competition from Tsumeb that had home ground advantage. Saturday morning play started early. The field was full and spirits was high. In some cases spiritus was high, but none the less we took on the battle. The half-way house Geraldine had prepared Prego rolls and kebabs. Thanks Geraldine, they were

superb and we hope to see you in Walvis Bay later this year. Some of the Walvis Bay teams was up on the match play at the turn and other was down, but it is not over until the fat lady sings. Gert Olivier Jnr and Pieter Fox was promised a hiding by Morne Schreuder and Dries Coetzee that was practicing allot before the event. Morne and Dries wanted revenge for the past few games. Gert and Piet considered the match the same as taking candy from a kid. Well done boys. Jason Barnard made his first trip to Tsumeb, poor Tsumeb, they were not ready for his handicap. Heinie Franken and Linda Loots was two down with four to play. Jip, they won with two at the end, very good comeback that one. Many of our teams had the same scenario, or the reverse. That did not matter as we once again kicked butt in Tsumeb. Walvis Bay won 6 of the 10 games that can be considered a hiding for Tsumeb on home ground. Walvis Bay players also showed their gratitude towards Tsumeb club as some

(fltr) Martin van den Berg and Herman Smidt

of our players handed back their prizes to be auctioned. The funds raised to be for the Tsumeb club. Wayne Hart and Herman Smidt took over and handled the auction. In a matter of minutes almost N$ 10 000 was raised for Tsumeb. Well done boys and thank you very much for the nice gesture. The evening ended in one of the best spit braai's tasted. The food was once again superb and your organising great. We had great fun and we will certainly make sure this event stay a highlight on our calendar. To Martin van den Berg, sponsor at Tsumeb and all the helpers and organisers, a big thank you from Walvis Bay side. We enjoyed every moment. See you in August. We are all square and the match in August will determine the ultimate winner before Omeya joins in. Westfire Meanwhile back at the ranch, Willie van Zyl and Westfire sponsored the competition in Walvis Bay. 28 players took part and taking into consideration the number of players that was not here it was a very good field. Willie did not expect that number of players, but still very well done Willie, we appreciate that you stand in every year during the Tsumeb week end to make sure we have the club going. 1st Jono Mather 43 points 2nd Pikkie Champion 41 points 3rd Wynand Breytenbach 40 points 4th Deville Dreyer 39 points. Once again, thank you Westfire, see you again next year. See you in the fairway.

Rossmund Weekly News

Hi all from a cool and wintry Rossmund - despite the cold we have been having some nice golfing weather and some good fields of golfers which is great. Wednesday 20 May was a great day for golf - being the third week in the month Michael Ludeke/Swakop Service Station - Engen was once again in charge of the prizes. Michael the guys enjoy your vouchers and we say a big thank you for all your support at Rossmund - there was a good field and the scores as always on a Wednesday were very close. The overall winner over 18 holes was Gerhard on 38pts - think he was glad to be back in the winning circle. Second was Mr Steady Athol winning on a countout with 37 points. The 9 hole competition

went to Warren with a great 19pts over the back nine. Saturday 23 May saw 35 players entering the monthly "feeshing" competition sponsored by Novanam - at the end of the day there were some new faces in the mix which is great. We had 5 x 2- clubs all but one on Number 12: Stefanus Bonifatius; Clive Lawrence ( who also managed to tap one in on Number 16); Wayne Profitt & Marco Swarts. The "Best Gross" for the day was played by Licuis Nande 72 whilst Athol McLean was the Overall Winner with a 69 nett. "A"

Div: Willie van Zyl 71;"B" Div: Sergio Figueiredo 70; "C" Div: Graham Louw 73; Ladies: Audrey Appleby 81 and Jnrs: Fritz Coetzee 70. Well done to all the players and a big thanks once again to Novanam. Sunday 24 May was our monthly SAGES Competition this time around sponsored by one of our long standing and popular friends Cashbox van Wyk/ Stainless Steel Engineering - there were 23 players with visitors from Walvis; Windhoek and Scotland. Cash as always had a couple of surprises up his sleeve that were kept under the covers until prize giving. Uncle John Powell really had his golfing

31

shoes on not only beating the field with a well played 36pts; producing the only 2xclub of the day and also securing the nearest to the pin on Number 7 whilst Clive Lawrence took nearest to the pin on Number 12. They were both well rewarded - each one receiving a half a sheep. Results : John Powell 36pts (c/o); Frikkie van Rooi 36pts (c/o); Eddy van Wyk 36pts (c/o); Achmet Abrahams 34pts (c/o); Andre Burger 34pts (c/o); Jacques van der Merwe 34pts (c/o). Athol McLean represented Rossmund @ the SAGES Nationals in Windhoek where he played two very consistent rounds to be crowned "Madala Cup Champion 2015" well done and well played Athol. Matchplay Competition: Jacque has done his stuff with the walkovers so please make sure that you complete your second round games by end of June. This coming Saturday 30 May will be a Club sponsored Betterball - whilst some of our guys will participate in the Eastern Open. Once again we remind all players it is their duty to repair all pitch marks and divots. Remember: "Golf is a game in which one endeavors to control a ball with implements ill adapted for the purpose."
