Police brutality suspected Madelaine Laubscher

According to a Swakopmund resident, two police officers allegedly assaulted his brother, Andy Goliath, after following his vehicle to his house, and subsequently arrested him for driving under the influence of intoxicating liquor (DUI). He further mentioned that after the arrest, his brother was assaulted once more inside the police holding cells. “I am furious, because my brother needed medical attention. He was arrested the Sunday night and I bailed him out last Wednesday. He was only charged for drunk driving the day after he was arrested, even though they never tested his alcohol blood-level. I wanted to take my brother specific food he needs to eat, as he is a diabetic, but they (police) refused.

Andy Goliath I want these officers to pay for my brother’s medical costs. The public must know that these officers were wrong.

Page 4 My question is why did they have to attack him when he did not even put up a struggle?” The said brother, Mr Andy

Goliath, noted to namib times that he has laid an assault charge against the officers. “The police never warned

me to pull over as I drove home. When they got out of their vehicle at my house, they just started kicking and beating me. Continues on page 2

The supposed incident occurred on 24 May and according to the source, the two police officers brutally attacked his brother in his yard, after assuming that he was driving drunk. “According to the police, he drove in front of them and he apparently hit a dog, which was why they followed him, but they never warned him to pull over,” the brother fumed. There were allegedly eye witnesses who saw how the officers simply started slapping and kicking his brother for no reason at all.

“Casualty is only for vehicle accident victims and stab wounds…”

Liesl Losper After numerous complaints from residents about the poor service at the Walvis Bay State Hospital, this reporter had a first-hand experience, last month, at this medical establishment. “When I arrived at casualty, in dire need of medical assistance, I was completely shocked by

the attitude and rudeness of the lady at reception. She addressed the patient in front of me in a very

rude tone, asking why he does not know what his residential address was. She (receptionist) went

on saying, “Go that side to the sisters first and then come and pay,” without making any eye contact.

I asked her if she was talking to me, which she confirmed. I than went to casualty, where I found

nobody at the reception desk, it was quiet with no other patients on the benches. Continues on page 2

brief testimony before court, the case was postponed until today at 10:00 for the continuation of the trial. The seven suspects - all directors in the little-known Avid Investment Asset Management Company, which had some links to the ruling Swapo-Party - were all present in court yesterday. They are Windhoek businessman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO)

of Namangol Asset Management Company, Nico Josea; former Deputy Minister of Works, Transport and Communication and Swapo politician Paulus Kapia; Avid Investment’s Administrative Secretary Inez //Gases; former Acting Secretary-General of the National Youth Council (NYC), Ralph Blaauw; and his wife, Sharon Blaauw; Labour Ministry official and lawyer Otniel

Walvis Bay State Hospital in crossfire As a reporter, I have received numerous complaints from readers over the past months, regarding the casualty section of the hospital not being staffed at all times. Thus, I took out my camera and took a photo as proof, because it came to my mind that the readers (complainants) did not exaggerate. After I took my last photo a nurse came running from the back, apparently she was attending to a patient. She started screaming. “What are you doing, you are not authorised to take photos in this hospital! She grabbed her phone and requested assistance from security. When I entered casualty there were no-one at the reception desk, only the sister that came running from the back and in less than 2 minutes, the casualty area was packed with nurses, screaming and complaining about the

I have now applied for medical aid, to go to private doctors. Surely I will have to pay much more for my health, but at least, I will be treated with professionalism. It is unacceptable to treat a patient in the manner I was treated by these nurses. I am convinced that this is not the first case and that there are many similar cases which remain untold, because the affected patients or families do not know how to channel their complaints.” The namib times did try for two weeks to get response from the hospital on this issue, but to no avail.

Police brutality suspected Continued from page 1 I did not put up a fight with them. There are witnesses who saw what happened,” he said. One of the witnesses who spoke to the newspaper said, “I saw a struggle. The officers were attacking the man even though he did not fight back and then they took him away.” The newspaper contacted Deputy Commissioner Ottilie Kashuupulwa several times to ask if they were aware of the incident, and also if the matter is being investigated. By the time of going to print, the police spokesperson remained mum on the issue. According to the senior traffic officer of Walvis Bay, Mr Clifton Jacobs,

the police are allowed to reprimand a suspected drunk driver at his house, but in an orderly manner. “We are not allowed to simply assault or attack anyone if we suspect drunk driving. We have to warn the driver to pull over and try to have a conversation with the suspect and subsequently do a blood alcohol test within two hours. We may also not only charge a person the next day as is alleged in this case. A DUI charge must be laid immediately after arrest. I believe this matter should be investigated and taken further, if what the complainant said is the truth,” he said.

Police Public Relations Committee meeting Walvis Bay’s Police Public Relations Committee will conduct a meeting this Friday (5 June). This very important meeting will start at 14:30 at the Atlantic Conference Centre and all committee members are requested to attend. Contact: 081 146 4100.

Councillor Juuso Kambueshe was elected as the successor for the late Regional Councillor (Swakopmund Constituency) Germina Shitaleni, at last Friday's by-election. DTA's candidate, Christa Magrieta Hochobes, came second, followed by Marius Uwu – Gaeb (UDF) and Councillor Uahimisa Kaapehi (Nudo). Polling stations opened their doors at 07:00 on Friday morning and saw only 4 238 of the approximately 29 600 voters in the Swakopmund Constituency casting their votes. "I really expected more residents to show up and practice their right to vote for a candidate of their choice," said Professor Paul Isaak, head of the Electoral Commission of Namibia to namib times, minutes after the official results were announced. No major hick-ups were experienced and everything went according to plan, as per Proffessor Isaak. The results were as follows: Juuso Kambueshe (Swapo) – 2621, Christa Magrieta Hochobes (DTA) – 762, Marius Patrick Uwu-Gaeb (UDF) – 497 and Uahimisa Kaapehi (Nudo) – 358. Kambueshe will be in this position until the term ends in December 2015, where after another election will be conducted. Councillor Kambueshe with some of his loyal supporters

Magrietha Swartbooi (39), a single mother who shares an informal dwelling with her 5 children shared her experience with the namib times, after the recent, gruesome discoveries of a fetus and five-month old baby in Walvis Bay and Swakopmund, respectively.

Magrietha with twins, Hope and Blessing

“I love my children and I know, and have full experience with what the financial implications of being a single mother are,” Magrietha said. She was a single mother of three kids when she “started to feel dizzy and nauseous” during December 2013. After a visit to the clinic, the doctor informed her that she was pregnant, recalled Magrietha. “At that stage I was disappointed in life and in myself. I did use my contraceptives, how was it possible? When I got home I looked at my other kids who came running to me. The one asked me if I brought bread, as she was hungry. I looked in her eyes, and I felt

so helpless.” Magrietha is a domestic worker in Walvis Bay and she commented that her employers help her a lot, but she cannot expect from them to help her every time when it gets tough, she noted. “I work and I get paid, and this money I use to the best interest of my children,” she remarked. Magrietha accepted the pregnancy despite the rough times she knew she would have to face. “On 24 August 2014 I gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. The nurse looked at me and asked, what do we have here? I immediately noticed

something was wrong, and then suddenly I felt another pain coming. The nurse then asked, are you ready for baby number two? I gave birth to two baby girls. I did not know I was expecting twins.” Magrietha remarked that she was in total shock and started to cry. “The thought crossed my mind to give the babies up for adoption.” But then the thought of giving her children away hurt her and she knew that giving them away, would kill her inside. We asked Magrietha how she is currently coping.

Tears started rolling over her cheeks when she answered, “They get their love definitely, but frustration sometimes makes it difficult. We do not have water where we live. During the week they wear disposable nappies, because someone is looking after them while I am at work. On weekends I use towel nappies, which I can hand-wash. I give them vegetables when I can afford it, but on other days it is only porridge. I have however forced myself to keep on breastfeeding both of them. Breastfeeding helped me a lot. I named them Hope and Bles-

sing, because I had hope when I found out I was pregnant and then I received a blessing, my second baby. I believe God never makes a mistake with one's life and they do have their purpose in life. I will continue to just love them, even though we are facing a lot of struggles,” Magrietha concluded.

Mondesa murder accused remain behind bars Mavourlene Gaes

Nelson Sam Ngurorua (25), Titus Nekomba (23), Dennis Haraeb (22), 21 year old Asser, Israel Weva (23) and Kennedy Ngesheya (25) implicated in the murder in which a 30-year-old Mondesa resident was stabbed and stoned to death appeared in the Swakopmund magistrate’s court yesterday. At yesterday’s court appearance Magistrate Brown merged the murder charge of recently apprehended Weva and Ngesheya with that of the previously arrested four suspects. She postponed the matter to 19 August for further investigation as well as to give the suspects enough time to gain legal aid. It is alleged that they

stabbed and stoned Tulihaleni Kadhila (30) to death during March this year, after accusing him of having stolen a cellphone, apparently belonging to one of them. The incident took place between 02:00 and 03:00 at a house in Mondesa, close to the Mahetago Community Hall. The deceased was believed to have been on his

way home from a night out, when he was attacked by the suspects. Kadhila allegedly managed to flee the scene after he was stabbed, but the suspects chased him and bombarded him with stones and bottles. He sustained serious injuries on his forehead and died on the scene.

Homeless man still in custody Madelaine Laubscher

After a local resident from Walvis Bay was arrested for public indecency, recently, the police yesterday confirmed that he is still in custody. He was arrested after walking naked in the streets, in protest for losing his home. Photo contributed

The namib times requested to speak with the man, in order to get his side of the story. However Chief Inspector Erastus Iikuyu said that “he is still in custody and it is up to the court to de-

cide what will happen to the man.” The newspaper wanted to interview the man on a previous occasion, shortly after his arrest, however we were told that he first needed to be evaluated

psychologically. It is however still unclear whether the man have been evaluated. According to Deputy Commissioner Ottilie Kashuupulwa, the man told the police he walked naked

to protest against losing his informal dwelling and had nowhere to go after municipal officials allegedly demolished the residence.

Voters' education is priority: ECN director SWAKOPMUND A few voters had difficulties operating the electronic voting machines (EVMs) during the Swakopmund Constituency by-election on Friday. Acknowledging that some people still found it hard to use the EVMs, Director of Elections Paul Isaak told Nampa on Friday that his team assisted such voters and made sure that nobody left the booth without voting. “Voter education is a priority to us; we have close to 200 voter education officials across the country - the biggest number of staff at the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN). With that, we managed to educate the citizens on how to use the machines and we will continue to do so,” he said. The EVMs were used before in the general elections and other by-elections last year. “This is why you see that many people had no problem using them, as it was the case during the machines' introduction,” he told this agency. Asked about the language barrier that at times occurred between the voters and ECN staff at polling stations because some voters do not speak the official English language or the more common Afrikaans language, he said: “We try our best to help translate; this is not a problem as we have a variety of staff who speak different languages.” About voter verification devices that sometimes failed to read the fingerprints of voters to reveal their identification details, the director said that is not a problem either as officials can use the manual system to verify voter details. Also approached for comment, the ECN's returning officer for the Swakopmund Constituency, Johannes Kashindinge Nghipuilepo said the by-election provided employment to 102 people. “These are experienced persons who worked in the previous elections and were just called again to assist this time around,” he said. The by-election was won by Swakopmund Mayor Juuso Kambueshe from the Swapo Party with 2 621 votes out of 4 238 votes cast. A total of 29 400 voters were registered to vote in that constituency. Obtaining Fishing

Permits

Obtain a permit from the Namibian Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources (MFMR) to catch fish or dive for crayfish and respect harvesting limitations. WHY? The marine resources are limited and currently some of them are overfished or over collected. It is necessary that everybody uses them wisely and carefully to secure the future harvesting needs by protecting the stock. Quantity/number of marine resources harvestable, minimum size limits of fish and crayfish that can be caught, open season etc. help to manage stocks to avoid the total disappearance of some species in our waters. Do not leave bait or fish on the beach! Either take it home or return it to the sea. This food attracts scavengers like jackals and gulls that prey on other bio-diversity. When you are back home after the holiday, it also inflates the predator population. Where can you get a license for angling, crayfish diving & bait/mussels collection?

Views of Namibian newspapers on Marine Phosphate Mining

On 29 May 2015 three Namibian newspapers conveyed important opinions and editorial statements on the question of marine phosphate mining. Herewith excerpts from the three: • THE NAMIBIAN editorial, 29 May 2015 – “Resist Projects with Shortterm Gain” WE SUPPORT the stance of the fisheries minister Bernard Esau that our government policies must be driven by the sustainable exploitation and long-term use of our resources, especially natural ones. It is disconcerting that the minister of mines and energy, Obeth Kandjoze, appears hell-bent on pleasing ‘buddies’ in his sector while seemingly turning a blind eye to the possible consequence of the damage to fishing. While at Namcor, Kandjoze, if not instrumental and complicit, was part of the group who oversaw the get-rich-quick oil exploration period in Namibia over the past decade and a half. But making a few people rich should not come at the expense of the majority and, definitely not at the risk of destroying renewable natural resources, as the case between phosphate mining and fishing may be. Oil exploration has already been reported to have disturbed tuna fishing, causing migration to quieter waters away from Namibian shores. We must resist short-term gratification in favour of sustainable long-term survival. • CONFIDENTE article “Marine phosphate mining quandary” by Hilary Maree on 29 May 2015 MINING rarely produces compelling debates but Namibia’s marine phosphate mining may have been the most tightly debated eco-

nomic frontiers defusing growing tension between the fishing industry and environmentalists on one side and mining companies that claimed they would invest a lot of money to create jobs and exports on the other. With the success of marine diamonds mining spurring interest in phosphate deposits, mining companies will not be allowed to undertake operations detrimental to the marine ecosystem, the government backed by pressure group has emphasised. However, 20 months after Cabinet decided on 17 September 2013 to impose an 18-month moratorium on marine phosphate mining, the situation looks like it will take a different turn with new Minister of Mines and Energy Obeth Kandjoze having reportedly admitted that the “moratorium holds no water.” Speaking to captains of the mining industry during the annual general meeting of the Chamber of Mines of Namibia (CMN), Kandjoze further acknowledged that the “rights holders cannot be stopped.” In what was his first address to the industry since his appointment about two months ago, Kandjoze remarked, “There are gaps in various legislations that are not the problems of the rights holders. I am now pushing for the technical committee to come forth with their recommendations and I hope that within the next few days or weeks this directive will be forthcoming.” Over the past months, Government’s guarded approach to allowing fullscale phosphate marine

mining was based on the fact that the country’s coastal waters would become the testing ground for marine phosphate mining, which it says has never been done anywhere else in the world. Equally, environmental pressure groups hailed the government’s decision to ban marine phosphate mining for the 18-20 months because of fears that it could destroy the fishing industry. The pressure group, Swakopmund Matters issued a statement saying that the decision to place a moratorium on phosphate marine mining will have a monumental impact. The group said the marine environment will reap the benefits of the foresight displayed by the Cabinet. According to the group, the livelihoods supported by Namibia’s fishing industries are now assured for years to come and the maintenance and rebuilding of Namibia’s fish stocks can now proceed unhindered and without the constant fear that irreparable harm will be caused by disruptive activity such as marine phosphate mining. “This is a resounding triumph for all those who backed this moratorium and ensured this decision. They must be congratulated for their perseverance. They had confidence in their cause throughout. They never wavered. They stood resolute. It is an achievement that has not come without sacrifice,” said the group. Last year the government reiterated that environmental clearances for prospective marine phosphate

operations will only be considered if and when the moratorium ended and with the moratorium having lapsed in March, a new decision is keenly anticipated from those that feel marine phosphate mining holds keys to a better GDP. Norwegian-based Foundation for Scientific and Industrial Research and the Institute of Marine Research was contracted to identify the scientific requirements to assess impacts of marine phosphate mining on the ocean environment. In conclusion, though the government is faced with a tough decision to make between widening GDP and creating more jobs on one hand and preserving the marine ecosystem on the other hand, it has become apparent that government needs to finalise this matter and put the matter to rest if progress on both ends is to be achieved. • Windhoek Observer Opinion: “PHOSPHATE MINING: LET THE SCIENCE SPEAK FOR ITSELF” - 29 May 2015. The dust refuses to settle over the proposed N$3.1 billion Sandpiper Marine Phosphate Project, a project that has divided environmentalists, the fishing industry and those in Government. Delays by the Government-appointed Norwegian scientists to finalise a study which would determine whether or not marine phosphate mining poses a threat to the fishing sector has not helped matters. The fishing sector and other environmentalists are well within their rights to object to marine phosphate

mining which has been banned in other parts of the world, notably Australia, because of the fear that such operations will have a negative impact on the sea environment and on fishing stocks. But in the absence of any scientific proof that this will be so, any concerns by the environmentalists and the fishing sector appear to be conjecture at this stage. The fact that there is no country in the world that is involved in marine phosphate mining does not mean that Namibia cannot be a world leader in this area. But of course the science has to guide us on the way forward; not greediness, self-interest, or emotions. While it would be folly for the Government to give the green light on marine phosphate mining without the necessary scientific studies to prove its impact, if any, on fishing stocks, we need timelines of when such studies should be completed. We cannot continue holding investors hostage because of the absence of such studies. We need to change our mind-set on the way we do business. Marine Phosphate mining, like the fishing industry, is a billion dollar industry, which could bring a lot of economic benefits to the country. We need to have closure on this controversial project, and the sooner we do that, the better for everyone.

Leaders agree on need to streamline mass housing programme

The Mass Housing site at Swakopmund Regional and local authority leaders have agreed on the need to streamline the mass housing programme to make it more responsive, as its current form is not producing the desired housing statistics. Windhoek Mayor Muesee Kazapua said this during the monthly City Council meeting on Thursday. Local Authority leaders attended a 'land crisis retreat' chaired by Minister of Urban and Rural Development Sophia Shaningwa from 19 to 23 May 2015 in Grootfontein to deliberate on the imminent need to speed up land delivery and housing in Namibia. Former President Hifikepunye Pohamba launched the N$45 billion mass housing development programme in November 2013 to ease the housing backlog in the country, targeting low-income earners such as residents of informal settlements. Kazapua said the participants were in agreement that the national laws and policies related to urban and rural development need to be reformed and be reactive to the demands of today. He thanked the minister for convening that consultative meeting to plan together and map the way forward on developmental challenges facing urban and rural communities. The retreat, which brought together governors and mayors from all the regions and towns of Namibia, deliberated on pertinent issues hampering the acceleration of delivery of serviced land to their urban citizens. Kazapua noted that it was a necessary and overdue platform that provided a genuine opportunity for the regional and local authority leaders to give their inputs based on the needs of the people they lead. N$20 000 worth of equipment for Namib High School Madelaine Laubscher

Old Mutual handed over equipment to the value of N$20 000 to Namib High School (NHS) after the school has once again been chosen as the top government school in the Erongo Region, last year. According to the school’s spokesperson, Mrs Ronel Louw, NHS was chosen as the top government school in the Erongo Region for the past few years. “Mr Kaandjosa from Old Mutual, along with his colleagues, handed over the equipment to the school’s principal, Mrs Coenie Greeff. Mr Kaandjosa told the newspaper that at Old Mutual, they believe

that their responsibility as a corporate citizen encompasses fostering and cultivating opportunities for the future leaders of the country. “This has resulted in the formation of a strategic partnership between Old Mutual and the Ministry of Education to promote excellence in education in Namibia.” The Old Mutual National Education Excellence Awards is a

key focus area of the Old Mutual Foundation. “We understand the value–add of an educated nation, and we believe it to be a privilege when we are able to financially support education at a national level and grow in our social responsibility towards the Namibian nation,” he said. According to Mr Kaandjosa their partnership with the Mi-

Mr Kaandjosa handing over the equipment to Mrs Greeff nistry of Education continues to grow with the shared objective to improve the standard of education and raise awareness amongst our peers on the impact of a strong and functioning education system.

“We are cognizant of the challenges faced individually by schools, and your achievements in overcoming these, and today we are proud to have the opportunity to contribute in some small way to your

goals of success for the learners and the school. This contribution is in thanks for each top student and teaching team that contributed to the elevation of our nation’s learning with their excellent

academic results in 2014. He encouraged the principals, teachers and students to persist in the deliverance of education excellence for the academic year of 2015.

Namibian Scientist Advances to Semi-finals in American 2015 Tech-I Competition… and he needs your vote to advance One young Namibian scientist has been selected as a semi-finalist in the Technology Idea (Tech-I) 2015 competition by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and the U.S. Department of State. The competition is offered as part of the Global Innovation through Science and Technology (GIST) initiative. Immanuel Hango (pictured), 31, earned a place as a semi-finalist based on his idea to stop the spread of cholera in Namibia through his company Profile Namibia Chemicals, a chemical and industrial minerals startup based in Walvis Bay. One solution identified by Namib Chemicals is to produce chlorine for water purification by electrolyzing salt using abundant solar energy. Solar energy used in this application contributes to sustainable development of Namibian resources in an environmentally-friendly manner. U.S. Ambassador Thomas Daughton said of Hango, “Immanuel embodies the spirit of applying innovative solutions to the world’s toughest challenges. His project has the opportunity to galvanize global attention for Namibia at the Global Entrepreneurship Summit in Kenya in July. Invest with your vote to help Immanuel #StarttheSpark.” As a semi-finalist in the GIST competition, Hango needs votes to advance to the finals and potentially attend the Global Entrepreneurship Summit 2015 (GES) which takes place in Nairobi, Kenya in July. Tech-I finalists will have the opportunity to meet with President Barack Obama, who will attend the Global Entrepreneurship Summit as part of his fourth presidential trip to sub-Saharan Africa bringing together business owners, educators, policymakers and investors to support the growth of new enterprises in developing regions. “I would like the public to vote as I am the only Namibian in the semi-finals. This will not only benefit me, but it will help bring Namibia on the map in the science industry,” said Hango. The public can vote for him by logging into the GIST website and following simple voting steps at http://www.gistnetwork.org/tech-i/vote. Voting is open through June 11, 2015.

Voting, combined with expert scores from the first phase of the competition, will help determine the top 15 ideas and top 15 startups for Tech-I 2015. Hango said he began to study the spread of cholera while exploring applications of chlorine in areas such as the construction industry, food processing, water treatment, and plastics. “I found the need to study the outbreak of cholera after cases of the disease were recorded last year in different regions of the country” said Hango. “Last year,” he explained, “more fatal cases were reported in Otjozondjupa, Oshana and Khomas.” Cholera is caused by the vibrio cholera bacteria found in dirty or sewerage water. Hango said cholera can be prevented simply by purifying water with diluted chlorine. However, the product chlorine is not easily accessible to those living in rural areas. “A spoonful of chlorine can dilute up to 20 liters of dirty water; but currently, all chlorine products are imported into Namibia which makes it expensive for an ordinary Namibian to afford,” he said.

Ansie and Japie retire after 78 years of service to FNB Namibia FNB Easyloans Branch Manager, Ansie Lucas and Japie Hoon, Area Business Manager, (Erongo Area) have retired after more than 39 years of service respectively for FNB Namibia. At the farewell Ansie encouraged all FNBers to believe in themselves and ne-

ver to doubt their abilities while always striving for personal develop-

Japie Hoon, Area Business Manager

ment. Japie Hoon added: “Although I am happy about my new life, I am also sad to leave such a great company where I have made lifelong friends and worked with wonderful colleagues. FNB Namibia is a giant and is going places, and I am proud to be associated with this organisation.” Head of HR Andrew Kanime at FNB Namibia thanked the two loyal FNB employees for their years of selfless service and wished them well in retirement. “You deserve a break after being true to

FNB Namibia for more than 39 years. This kind of dedication is commendable and not something that we see nowadays anymore.” Kanime went on to say that according to the Bureau of Labour Statistics, the average number of years that US workers have been with their current employer was about 4.6. Tenure of young employees (aged 20 – 34) is only half that, namely 2.3 years. He said: “More than ninety-one percent of Millennials (born 1977-1997) expect to stay in a job for less than three years, ac-

cording to the Future Workplace “Multiple Generations @ Work” survey. That means they would have 15 – 20 jobs over the course of their working lives. While these statistics might not necessarily fully reflect the Namibian situation, the trend is actually also prevalent in the Namibian labour market as well given that millennials generally do not stick around for long with one employer. As such, loyalty and working one’s way to the top – and remaining at a company for 39 years – are no longer applicable.”

Ansie Lucas, FNB Easyloans Branch Manager Kanime added that FNB Namibia was extremely fortunate in that its employees seemed to remain at the company for quite some time. “As a matter of fact half of our workforce

has been with the Group for five years or more while more than a quarter of our workforce has been with the Group for 10 years and more,” he concluded.

FNB committed to Erongo Desert Festival FNB Namibia recently committed an annual amount of N$100 000 towards the Erongo Desert Festival for the next three years. Tienie Mouton, Area Manager FNB Namibia, Erongo Region expressed his delight at the sponsorship and said: “What speared the decision to support this initiative is of course FNB’s long history of supporting a number of different sport codes within Namibia over the years, especially at developmental level.” Mouton

Handing over of the cheque

added that the Desert Festival aimed at encouraging the participation of children and teenagers in the different winter sport codes, namely rugby, hockey and netball. “The fact that we had thirteen schools, seven from Namibia and five from South Africa participating was a success story in itself. The Desert Festival also encour-

ages the practice of sport activities in support of a healthier and active lifestyle, which we at FNB Namibia wholeheartedly believe in. We thank the organisers for a great 2015 festival and pledge our further support as we believe that sport is a powerful tool for developing humans and society.” This year’s event

was held from 7 – 11 April and attracted various international and local schools to the WBPHS sportsgrounds. Sports legends such as Walvis Bay born Percy Montgomery, AJ Venter, Rob Louw and Danie Gerber held a coaching clinic for aspiring young rugby players as part of the event. “We already have eight international

teams lined up for next year’s event,” says sports director Callie van Wyk. “Some of them include schools from the United Kingdom who will be travelling to Walvis Bay to participate. The FNB Desert Festival will become a world-class international sporting event.”

Blood Donation: Winter Call Every year, the overall amount of donations received during winter months are noticeably lower than other months of the year. This places immense strain on the blood supply, and limits access to much needed blood products. This year, in an attempt to prevent this expected blood shortage, the Blood Transfusion Service of Namibia (NamBTS) is encouraging existing donors to invite eligible family members and friends to join them in donating blood during June and July. “Regular donors tend to be the best recruiters of new donors,” says Ms Zita Tobin, Donor Relations Supervisor at NamBTS. She says that, “if every blood donor brings just one friend, colleague or family member to donate with them during June and July, dona-

tions can be doubled and the necessary donation target easily reached to ensure a sufficient blood supply this winter.” It is estimated that, in order to ensure that enough blood will be available, 5 000 units of blood (2 500 per month) must be donated during the next

FNB Namibia launches 8 Classic Clashes

On 26 May FNB Namibia launched the 8th Classic Clashes at the Wanderers in Windhoek. The FNB Classic Clashes was initiated by the bank in 2008 and has grown from strength to strength over the past 8 years with many senior secondary school learners striving for a place to participate in netball, rugby and soccer. At the 2015 launch Dixon Norval, Head of Strategic Marketing and Communications

at the bank read the FNB speech on behalf of the Group CEO Sarel Van Zyl and said: “FNB

Namibia, in association with Namib Mills, is very proud to bring you this sport programme

that has been running for eight years consecutively. The theme for this year's Classic Clashes is again “Game On! Be a Hero. Be there!” and strives to reveal the competitive spirit that we want to

foster between schools. It also reminds us that it is not only the men and women on the sports field who are important but the total school fraternity, including fellow learners and even the broader school community. As a matter of fact, it is the host school's responsibility to encourage spectators to be there in their numbers. The principle behind this strategy is that the positive competitive spirit on and off the sports field will spill over to the academics as well, resulting in wellrounded youngsters who know how to play hard and work hard to achieve their dreams and who act as role models for their school community.” Norval stressed that FNB Namibia had over the years seen how youngsters become aware of

their own abilities, acquire new skills, learn to measure themselves against others, function as a team, learn how to deal with winning or losing and to respect one another while of course having great fun. Norval added that FNB and Namib Mills continued to support the school community at large and best performing players would once again receive N$250 deposited in their FNB bank account and feature on TV as the Namib Mills Heroes. He continued: “We've got the traditional media channels covered, but what better way to engage the youth by using a Facebook page for the youth to share their achievements and experiences with their peers. Pupils, players, parents – all Classic Clashes supporters and fans can visit the Face-

book page and become part of the Classic Clashes Namibia community before, during and after the games to view profiles and results. We encourage you to actively become part of this cyber community.” Norval concluded by saying the bank would also announce a number of new and exciting additions to the 2015 FNB Classic Clashes at a slightly later stage. “In line with FNB's corporate value of innovation, we continue to add more exciting elements to these events. In 2013 for instance we introduced the mouthguards for the rugby players to protect them during a match. Last year each participating school received a copy of the Classic Clashes DVD and new song to prepare their unique performances. Watch this space.”

Table Tennis the Winner at 2015 Coastal Open Swakopmund Indoor Sport Centre was the host of the best ever Coastal Table Tennis Open presented by the Namibia Table Tennis Association as 32 senior and 46 junior players descended on Swakopmund to take part in this prestigious table tennis tournament on 23 May.

Junior entries exceeded expectations with a large number of entries from Elnatan, Rehoboth, and Mariental schools. There were also three participants younger than 11, indicating a bright future for table tennis in Namibia. Great was the surprise for all participants and spectators when Namibia's own International Olympic Committee Member, Frank Fredericks, paid a visit to the event and updated the juniors about the upcoming Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires in 2018. Namibia Table Tennis really made good strides as our juniors produced very high quality table tennis, with upsets at the order of the day. It was however no surprise when Reese Saunderson and Kaitlyn

Beukes, both from Windhoek Gymnasium, contested the junior ladies final where Reese triumphed with 3-0. Elnatan scholar Leandi Dreyer took the bronze medal. Reese then teamed up with Dietrich Möwes of St. Georges to secure the junior mixed doubles title when they edged out the Elnatan Private School pair of PW Steenkamp and Leandi Dreyer in the final. Third place went to Jesse Joseph (M&K Gertze Secondary School) and Ronaldo Vogel (Rehoboth High School) and it was a surprise not to have the favourite pairing of Kaitlyn Beukes and Kean Tait (Windhoek Gymnasium) on the podium. PW Steenkamp won the gold in the junior men division by beating surprise finalist Delton Dreyer (Mariental High School) in

the final. The bronze medal was won by Ethan Januarie (DHPS). Number one seed Ronaldo Vogel and winner of the recent Namibia-China Friendship Cup, Dietrich Möwes, was not in medal contention after being eliminated during the quarter final stage by PW Steenkamp and Ethan Januarie respectively. PW Steenkamp and his doubles partner, Jean Paul Thorburn (Elnatan) beat tournament favourites Ronaldo Vogel and Dietrich Möwes in the final to take home gold in the junior men doubles division. Bronze went to Kean Tait and Raimo Dengeinge. In the senior ladies category Khutsifalo Sekolokwane once again showed her class when she won the gold medal by defeating junior, Reese Saunderson, in straight sets

Group photo of winners in the final. Another junior, Kaitlyn Beukes, defeated local contender, Brigitte Hartz, in the bronze medal playoffs. More upsets came in the senior open division where Derick Rooza won the gold medal. The player from Walvis Bay had a tough route to the final and had to beat tournament favourites Ramon Hansen (semi-

finals) and defending champion Heiko Fleidl in the final. Both these games were tough and he had to pull out all stops to secure victory for his region. Hansen secured bronze medal. This was Rooza's first major title. The pairing of Ramon Hansen and Rudi Saunderson successfully defended their doubles title when they beat Derrick Rooza

and Fabian Tait in the final with Heiko Fleidl and Reinolt Schurz in third place. Heiko Fleidl made sure that he did not leave the tournament without a gold medal when he and Khutsifalo Sekolokwane won the senior mixed double title against Fabian Tait and Junior, Reese Saunderson. Tait and Saunderson put up a strong challenge but it was not enough against the

aggressive play by Fleidl and Sekolokwane. NTTA wish to thank Salz Gossow for sponsoring this event for a fourth consecutive year and the Swakopmund Indoor Sports centre Management for making the great facilities available. Schools or Individuals interested in taking up table tennis is encouraged to contact the NTTA as soon as possible at email:

Team Kia Elite secure second place at Namib Quest Race

Team KIA Elite secured the second overall place at the Namib Quest race which came to an end on Friday in Swakopmund. Represented by Michael Pretorius and youngster Brandon Plaatjes, competing in their first MTB stage race ever, the men in red and white put up a great performance throughout the six stage event with only Team Hollard 2 (Gerhard Mans Jnr and Heiko Redecker) beating the pair to the first place. The KIA team eventually ended the event after 18:53:45 hours, while Team Hollard 2 crossed the finish line in 18:37:29. The Hollard Riders got off to a great start, finishing the first stage nearly five minutes ahead of the KIA pair. They then managed to increase their lead to nine minutes after a near faultless performance during the second day. With their backs against their walls, Pretorius and Plaatjes massed their power during day three to decrease their deficit to less than two

minutes. However, their success was only short-lived as the Team KIA members lost valuable time on day four after having navigation problems. Mans Jr and Redecker used the mistake to their full advantage, increasing their lead substantially. The string of bad luck continued for Pretorius and Plaatjes the very next day when Plaatjes suffered a broken chain that allowed their rivals to increase the time gap even further. A fiveminute advantage win after the last stage wasn't enough to catch up to the Hollard team members who comfortably took home the win. Xavier Papo and Tjipe Murangi of Mannies Bike Mecca took the third place, while Irene Steyn and Michelle Vorster were the best ladies team in fourth place.

The game started on a high note for Walvis Bay when they scored the first try but unfortunately missed the conversion (5-0). Shortly thereafter Walvis Bay scored yet again but missed the conversion yet again when Ruan Kotze, fly-half, kicked the ball against the goal post. Walvis Bay scored another 5 tries and Ruan Kotze scored 5 successful conversions. Polytech however struck back when Joanny Cloete, scrum-half scored the first try for his team and Donovan O’Brien, fly-half, was successful with the

conversion. At halftime the score stood at 43-7. The second half kicked off in full steam when Walvis Bay scored another try, but Ruan Kotze unfortunately missed the conversion. Walvis Bay made up for that mistake, when they scored yet again, followed by Ruan Kotze’s successful conversion. Polytech scored again, when fly-half Donovan ‘O Brien scored another try for his team. The excitement was however too big for him when he missed the conversion (55-12). Walvis Bay scored 4 tries

thereafter, where substitute fly-half John Thomas Martins unfortunately missed all 4 conversions. Polytech received a penalty where Donovan O’Brien set the score at 15, followed shortly thereafter by another try, for his team. He unfortunately missed the conversion.
