Dreadlocks cause havoc at school Liesl Losper

"Water Cube" weer toe

Lamour Isaacks, a Grade 8 student at Kuisebmond Secondary School in Walvis Bay, was sent home this week, after being notified that the school’s regulations do not allow boys to have long hair. In this instance Lamour, who is raised under the Rastafarian Religion, has dreadlocks, as mandatory to his religion. Although the school has not formally suspended the student, he has missed 3 days of school, because of his dreadlocks. The boy’s father, Mr Ras Isaacks, contacted the namib times, after receiving a hand-written letter from the school’s principal, indicating that “he can only attend school if his hair is cut.” The letter, written on a used piece of paper, further notes that “if you fail to adhere to it, your child must look for another school, where learners with Rasta hair are allowed.” On arrival at the school

yesterday morning, one of the teachers at the school offensively approached the learner in front of his father and this reporter, asking the child where he has been and if he had told his father that he did not do his homework. This teacher did not even bother to ask what the situation was. Ms Gawises (Education Inspector of the Walvis Bay circuit) was also informed about the scenario and yesterday paid the school a visit. Mr S N Gottlieb, Kuisebmond Secondary school’s headmaster noted to the child’s father that “the school

didn’t single him out because of his religion; they singled him out because of his hair. We want him back in school and we are not abandoning him, but can only allow him back if he adhere to the school rule No 2, which you have signed as a parent.” Mr Isaacks’ response to this was that dreadlocks are a method of self-expression, because it communicates to others an important fact about Lamour, that he is a Rastafarian for whom traditional religious practices are important. By refusing to allow him to attend school, the

where Lamour finished his primary education. When contacted, the principal of Kuisebmond Primary School, Mrs S. Fisher, commented that she does remember about such an incident and the letter. “There was a letter, but it was years ago. I don’t even remember what the exact content was and I do not have the letter anymore. The letter was not accepted, but since the scenario just kept dragging on we eventually complied with it,” she noted. She also remarked that Lamour was a well behaved learner, causing no trouble, while attending Kuisebmond Primary School. Another Rastafarian, Mr Adriaan Jantjies (on photo), noted that he had to cut his child’s hair in order for him to get his education and also mentioned that at another primary school in Kuisebmond pupils are referring to his child as a “moffie.” Richie, also a Rastafarian, accompanying Mr Isaacks said that he had to enrol his child at a school in another town in the Erongo Region, as he was not accepted here. He further commented that Rastafarians believe the Bible forbids them from cutting their hair. To prove his point he read a scripture from Numeric 6. The headmaster and teachers however argued that the fact of the matter was that every

learner at the school should comply with the school’s rules. “Is the school’s rules superior to word of the Lord?” Mr Isaacks commented. “There are some schools in Namibia which do enrol Rastafarian kids. I call upon your good office, follow the example of those other schools and make us proud of our educational system. Due to my beliefs, it means my child must not get an education, he must start living in the streets, go and steal to make a living, just because the school rules said no, because of his hair,” Lamour's father stated. The namib times raised a question regarding what harm his dreadlocks will do to other kids in the school, which almost resulted in a racial altercation. In conclusion Lamour was not allowed back at the school and left with his father. Ms Gawises noted that she had to get feedback on the issue from the Ministry of Education. Jantjies commented “School is not the military. They are not soldiers and not in prison either. These haircut rules are for the military and prisons (even that is a little out of hand), period. Why is this not understood? Schools should never be about forcing any child to be someone they are not, or complying to rules without a legitimately understandable reason. Forcing chil-

dren into a ‘one size fits all’ box is doing a major disservice to our country and it will have a devastating impact on our economy in the years that follow, as we continue to produce mindless drones taught to only follow orders and not think for themselves or be who they are. It should be a safe haven where the primary focus is on learning and the empowerment of our children and their potential.” Quoting from a syllabus for 2007, grade 8 to 10 (see source below), this was once part of a 2007 syllabus for grade 8 and 10 where for example Bahai’ Faith together with Rastafarianism formed part of their education. 2. Rationale Religion is a way of making meaning out of life. Children are brought up in the feelings, values and relationships of their home culture from earliest childhood, and wonder

about the mysteries of life. The aim of Religious and Moral Education is to enable learners to understand their religious beliefs and practices, and to accept other groups whose values and traditions are different from their own. Religious and Moral Education enables learners to better understand themselves and the changing multicultural world in which they are growing up. In the Junior Secondary phase the learners are enabled to understand the diversity of religious belief and practice in the wider community, and to explore some world religions. This work leads to focussing on moral issues and on taking responsibility. http://www.nied.edu.na junior secondary phase Religious and moral Education syllabus 2007

Voorts is

The Municipality of Walvis Bay had their first ordinary council meeting of the year, at the Council chambers in Kuisebmond on Tuesday.

The Council meetings are held every last Tuesday of the month and during these sessions important development issues are discussed which affects the future of the town. The meeting touched on the Bulk fuel Storage project which took place in November last year and according to Mayor Uilika Nambahu, the project is expected to start during next month. “The project is estimated to cost N$4 billion upon its completion and the oil storage capacity of our country will increase from its current 14 days to about 30 days. This project will create many employment opportunities during and after construction” boasted Nambahu. Another issue that the Mayor has touched on is the Walvis Bay to Swakopmund road upgrade which is estimated to cost about N$1.3 billion. The money will cover the upgrading of the current dirt road between the two towns behind Dune 7 to bitumen standard. Mayor Nambahu added that such an upgrade will not only have a significant reduction in road traffic accidents that are associated with congestion and other bottlenecks, it'll ensure safe and efficient mobility of passenger and cargo to and from Walvis Bay. “Other projects will include the SADC Gateway Terminal, the Trans Kalahari Railway project, Bulk Electricity upgrade, Gas power station and the upgrade of the Walvis Bay Airport” she added. The Councils on their side have several developmental projects which include but are not limited to the construction of two-storey shopping malls, a six-storey Ecotourism complex and a land development project for mixed use. The Mayor proceeded by saying her office intends to implement a selection of community based projects to alleviate food loss and food insecurity within the harbour town. “We have observed much to our horror that there are people who due to no fault of their own go to bed hungry, while they live in a city of plenty” she concluded.

Drink spiking still rife at coast Madelaine Laubscher

A local girl was allegedly the latest victim of drink spiking at a well-known night club in Walvis Bay over the past weekend. The namib times contacted the authorities to shed light on what to do in such a situation and according to the Walvis Bay Reaction Team it happens quite often at the coast. According to a trusted source, great concern was caused. “Her drink was believed to have been spiked Saturday evening at a popular nightclub when she was out with friends. They became suspicious when the girl started feeling fuzzy and became unconscious and unresponsive within minutes. They immediately took her home. Luckily she had been with friends. The next morning she was very ill. The person who spiked her drink is unknown. This could happen to anyone. Young girls should be

on the look-out. Spiking of drinks is a popular way of getting girls unconscious,” she said. It is not known whether the police have been involved in this case. The newspaper spoke to the authorities to ask what usually transpires in such a situation and what the effects are. A member of the Walvis Bay Reaction Team says if someone’s drink was spiked it should be reported immediately, as the necessary tests need to be done. “Drink spiking happens quite often at the coast. Such an incident should

definitely be reported to the police. There is no other way of handling such a case. The culprits who spike drinks usually use eye drops at the coast. We advise everyone who goes to clubs to not accept a drink from a stranger, nor to leave a drink unattended while you are occupied with something else. Do not even leave the drink with a friend,” she said. Another source, who had been a victim of spiking, also spoke to the newspaper. “It is not only eye drops that are used at the coast. I was spiked with Rohypnol,

the date rape drug, a few years ago. It is definitely not a new trend at the coast. I left my drink with friends when I went outside for fresh air. When I returned I drank what was left of my drink. All I can remember was that I then tried to tell my friends something was wrong but my body started shaking uncontrollably and I collapsed and had a complete blackout. According to a medic that was also at the club I had a slight seizure and was taken to hospital to be put on a drip. Fortunately my friends

were with me the whole time and saw to it that nobody suspicious came near me. After I was hospitalised the doctor said the person who spiked me actually overdosed me and I was lucky to be alive. I cannot remember anything form that night and only know what I was told by bystanders after I was spiked. I have learnt a valuable lesson, which is to never leave a drink with anyone, nor to accept any drink that I did not witness being served,” she said. The Walvis Bay Reaction Team referred the news-

Drink spiked with eye drops paper to IOL News, warning the community about four common date rape drugs. “Eye drops are one of the popular ones as it is cheap and easily accessible. With eye drops, the colour of your drink will not change, thus caution is advised. Victims say they had one drink, but when they wake up the next morning, they feel like they had 20. The drug may also suppress a victim’s central nervous system.

Other well-known drugs used to spike drinks are Rohypnol, Ketamine hydrochloride (an odourless anaesthetic) and GHB, a veterinary product that paralyses its victim. The physical effects can be felt long after the spiking of a drink. Urine and blood tests should be done when someone has been spiked.” Many innocent young people have already died after being spiked – this is a heinous crime – beware!!

Remote Control Car Theft Warning Madelaine Laubscher

It has become a notorious trend at the coast - criminals target vehicles, using remote control devices to unlock the vehicle, gaining entry without force, and then steal valuable items from the vehicles. According to a resident who recently became a victim to this crime, there is a taxi operating in Walvis Bay and Swakopmund, of which the occupants are trying to steal items from vehicles, using this method. “A green taxi is driving around with five men and those men break into people’s cars with remote controls. They stole my husband’s phone out of our car that was locked. Please be on the lookout. It happened in the vicinity of KFC in Walvis Bay. I have reported it to the police. I really hope the police will find this taxi so that these culprits can be held responsible,” she said. Another resident told the newspaper that since she has been a frequent target (driving a Toyota) she had her remote control device connected to her car hooter

as a warning device. “My car was broken into three times with this method, so I decided to connect the remote control to the hooter. Now, when I lock the car and the hooter does not make a sound, I know I am being targeted. I was targeted once again recently. I stood around for a while to see who was targeting my car. I saw a suspect person approaching my vehicle and then he crossed the road. I manually locked my vehicle. I have seen these thieves crossing the road, only to return once you are out of sight. My advice is that everyone should connect their devices to their car hooters. These thieves are operating all the time, mostly in Walvis Bay.” A member of the Walvis Bay Reaction team told the namib times that this is

happening on a daily basis at the coast. “The hot spots for this trait in Walvis Bay are near Kfc, Mtc, Supatronix, Fnb, Pick n Pay and near the post office. The problem here is that these culprits need to be caught in the act for us to be able to arrest them. We advise all motorists, especially those people driving Toyotas, to double check that your car is indeed locked. It happens to me on a daily basis that I press the remote control button to lock my car, the light flashes, but the door does not lock. I have now made it a habit to feel if my doors are locked. Our emergency number is 081 558 1323 should anyone suspect that their car is being targeted. Call us and we will assist you immediately,” she concluded.

Man apprehended for raping and impregnating a minor Mavourlene Gaes

A 41 year old man appeared in the Walvis Bay Magistrates court on Monday for allegedly raping and getting his wife’s 15 year old sister pregnant. A source revealed that the victim resided in the same house in Kuisebmond with the accused and her older sister who is pregnant. According to Chief Inspector of the Erongo Police Erastus Iikuyu, the incident took place during the weekend after the victim’s sister left town to go visit a relative. Iikuyu added it is suspected the minor was raped on several occasions where he started having sexual intercourse with her in December last year to the beginning of this year leading to his arrest.

Although he could not shed light on who reported the case to the police as a way of motivating others to speak out and also because some family members were allegedly against reporting the crime, Iikuyu confirmed that both victim and Mutjida’s wife are alleged to be pregnant. There were also speculations made that the family wanted to withdraw the case against him and take it to the Traditional Court. The minor is said to be a grade six learner at a primary school in Kuisebmond and her case has

been transferred to the Women and Child protection unit, where she is receiving counselling. The accused appeared in front of Magistrate Vicky Nicolaidis on Monday who denied the accused bail as the crime he committed is of a serious nature. The matter was postponed to 5 February and the accused remains in custody. The accused's name is known, but due to the sensitive nature of the case, his name is being withheld. Police investigations continue.

Obtaining Fishing

Permits

Obtain a permit from the Namibian Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources (MFMR) to catch fish or dive for crayfish and respect harvesting limitations. WHY? The marine resources are limited and currently some of them are overfished or over collected. It is necessary that everybody uses them wisely and carefully to secure the future harvesting needs by protecting the stock. Quantity/number of marine resources harvestable, minimum size limits of fish and crayfish that can be caught, open season etc. help to manage stocks to avoid the total disappearance of some species in our waters. Do not leave bait or fish on the beach! Either take it home or return it to the sea. This food attracts scavengers like jackals and gulls that prey on other bio-diversity. When you are back home after the holiday, it also inflates the predator population. Where can you get a license for angling, crayfish diving & bait/mussels collection?

Tug Omanda afloat again Bernabé Blaauw

The Namport tugboat “Omanda”, which sank next to the Merlus jetty in the fishing harbour earlier this month, is afloat again. The “Omanda” sank next to the Merlus jetty, approximately 23:00 on Tuesday evening, 13 January, when she came to rest on the ocean floor with her superstructure still visible above the water. She was salvaged around 02:00 Sunday night the 18th and has been removed to the Syncrolift around

11:30 the next morning. The latest unconfirmed information indicates that the stabiliser of the vessel hit the sand on the edge of the channel she was operating in on the day of her demise and that the impact caused a rupture in the hull. On Wednesday, around 11:00 the corporate communications officer of the

Ports Authority, Jo-Ann Stevens, responded to our enquiry on the latest news of the tug and said, “We will update you on the progress soonest, but I can however confirm that she is being lowered from the Syncrolift as we speak, en route to our small craft harbour , and yes, she is watertight.”

compare the difference in biomass between tov3er time and in relation to rainfall. The fieldwork carried out near Gobabeb comprised of three randomly selected dune sites. Data collected from the sites were analysed in the laboratory. Following the field work and data analysis, results from the excavations were then compared to the previous studies. Results show that the biomass of the two fog dependant plants excavated by the SDP18 students, Trianthema hereroensis and Stipagrostis sabulicola, has increased over the years. The increase in biomass could be correlated to a higher rainfall that has been experienced in recent years. Gobabeb recorded a mean

annual rainfall of 163.6 mm in 2011, in comparison to the usual mean of 20 mm of rainfall per year. At Gobabeb, the tall Bushmans grass, Stipagrostis sabulicola, more than doubled its presence on the dune while Trianthema hereroensis increased fivefold. This represents an enormous 78% increase of biomass between 1991 and 2014. This huge increase can be observed simply by looking at the dunes. For example, old timers will remember when the dunes between Swakopmund and Walvis Bay were almost bare; however, now the succulent Trianthema hereroensis grows profoundly. Rainfall is essential for germination of plants while fog is needed to sustain the

These species rely heavily on the presence of fog; therefore, conservation and preservation of this precious heritage site is essential to enjoy and appreciate its unique beauty. From the results found by the SDP18 researchers, it is evident that the Namib Sand Sea has changed drastically over the years. The dunes are not just bare sand as many perceive at first glance, but rather teaming with life that cannot be found anywhere else in the world. Contribution by Gobabeb Students

Warning – Malicious computer virus alert

7

Madelaine Laubscher

A malicious virus has been spreading that wipes all the content on a computer. Eight companies in Walvis Bay have reported that they have fallen victim to this stunt - and a ransom is demanded to be paid in order to recover the data.

The namib times was made aware of two businesses that became a victim to this stunt. An email is sent to a victim in Arabic writing and when the attachment is opened, the virus encrypts all documents. A notification pops up stating the following: “Your personal files are encrypted by CTB-Locker. Your documents, photos, databases and other important files have been encrypted with strongest encryption and unique key, generated for this computer. Private encryption key is stored on a secret Internet server and nobody can decrypt your files until you pay and obtain the private key. You only have 96 hours to submit the payment. If you do not send the money within provided time all your files will be permanently crypted and no one will be able to recover them. Press view to view the list of files that we have encrypted.” A spokesperson at I-Consult told the namib times that

they are familiar with this virus and they have had a couple of clients requesting to salvage their data. “We have to this point not been able to retrieve any data of anyone who has fallen victim. It is a very bad virus. The message that pops up after the email has been opened states that a ransom needs to be paid within 96 hours in order to retrieve the data,” she said. Another spokesperson from I-Consult who has been working closely with this virus said that he does not know who the perpetrator is behind this virus, but that there is a way to block it. “The virus attaches itself to any documents and actually ransoms the documents. We have had six clients with this problem up to now. With a decent antivirus programme, it can be blocked. We advise everyone to not open any strange looking emails and a decent backup is a must,” he concluded.

Climate change integrated into National planning The message on one of the victims' computers

Mavourlene Gaes Ministry of Environment and Tourism hosted a two day workshop at a local hotel in Walvis Bay, on Integrating Climate Change into the National Planning and budgeting process. Namibia, as part of what was discussed at the workshop, is said to be highly vulnerable to the adverse impacts of climate change which affects all major sectors of the economy. The climate has always been characterised by natural inter-annual and inter-decadal climatic variability and the situation is expected to worsen with the advance of climatic change. The problem of Climate Change as further discussed during the workshop will not be resolved by external funding or mitigation and adaptation alone. Sion Shifa, the Conservation Scientist at the Ministries Environmental affairs department in the division of Multi-lateral environment agreements, explained the workshop was geared towards capacity building for incorporating climate change into the Ministries budgeting and planning process. Shifa says the financing of climate change initiatives are still relatively low in the country since it has not yet been integrated into national budgeting by various sectors.

“One of the major challenges facing our efforts to effectively address climate change is lack of financing. Despite our relatively healthy financial environment, we recognise the great need to obtain support from non-traditional financing mainly through bi-lateral and multi-lateral arrangements and in turn the climate change initiatives and interventions are mostly funded through multi-lateral windows” he further stated. In August 2004 a small group of officials from the Ministry of Environment and Tourism, the National Planning Commission (NPC) and the Ministry of Finance developed a concept. The concept included a road map to start the process of integrating climate change-relevant aspects into national sector planning and budgeting. After reviewing the challenges of climate change to Namibia and screening the planning and budgeting systems, the cabinet approved of the integration in September that same year and the National Climate Change Strategy and Action Plan (NCCSAP) was launched in October last year.

Just angry and disappointed in our officials and Namibian drivers. Can we at least raise some awareness?”

Initiated by Africa 2.0, #WeAre1ne is a global initiative aiming to foster, cultivate and advance initiatives that unite humanity worldwide, and address issues that affect the quality of life for citizens globally regardless of their race, gender, culture or religious belief. The #WeAre1ne initiative was initiated last week Friday and will continue for as long as possible. This initiative is to show solidarity and empathy to recent casualties surges from terror attacks where thousands lost their lives in Nigeria, other African countries, and around the world. On Friday the 23rd January 2015 it was encouraged to wear green or showcase an accessory of green color all day and take selfies with the index Finger up to symbolize the “number” 1, sign of Unity and Solidarity. The objective is to raise awareness via social media amongst citizens globally, encourage them to participate and propose solutions, based on tolerance that are inclusive, pacific, constructive and most importantly, that can address the roots of the problem. The campaign is inspired from the Ubuntu,

an African philosophy meaning, “I am because you are; we are one”. HOW DO YOU GET INVOLVED? There are 5 action points, but the campaign asks that everybody, most importantly, just do something. 1. Follow #WeAre1ne on all your social media platforms. Post on all social media proposing solutions that are inclusive, pacific, and constructive and more importantly can address the roots of the problem. 2. Wear green, and take selfies wearing green outfits with the index finger up to symbolize the “number” 1. 3. You can also post your pictures on Facebook, Instagram and other social media and tag your friends for them to rally and follow the movement. 4. Feel free to take group pictures around

the same theme to show collective mobilisation. 5. Upload #WeAre1ne videos on YOUTUBE with your testimonies around the situation wearing a green outfit. Africa 2.0 foundation is a Pan-African Civil Society organization that consists of young and emerging leaders from Africa and the Diaspora who share a collective vision for Africa and a commitment to finding and implementing sustainable solutions that will in turn leapfrog the development of the continent. The purpose is to influence thoughtful change in Africa by bringing together thinkers and actors from the private sector and civil society to develop and implement practical, creative strategies that will produce positive outcomes for millions of Africans.

He thinks its not one of the main causes of deaths, where I argue there is significantly an increased chance of an accident or death. You guys mind doing a bit of research, might want to include the recent suggestions made in SA in regards to no limit no alcohol.” 3. “I would like to know why schoolboys be forced to shave at the age of 15 years. Don't we actually force them into becoming an adult too soon. Schools are suppose to be there for education and not an army base. By shaving so early, don't mess up his face. The other thing is I was told to find another school for the kid, now this is a government school, is it correct for them to tell me that. There’s no where in the education act any mention of such a thing. Just one question-- if they become stubborn with the teachers who will get the blame, the parent or the school who forced him into becoming ripe too early.”

Letter from the North -3

Drive Against Malaria in Namibia David Robertson has been spearheading the Drive Against Malaria for decades, and since 1999, Julia Samuël has been helping him – as promised, Julia has written us from the north of Namibia, to share the latest on their local campaign. Malaria concerns in Namibia are rising We left Windhoek after our meeting with the country representative of the World Health Organization, Prof Monir Islam. The spread of Malaria in the country, down south, is concerning. Although the annual Malaria related morbidity rates have decreased over the years in the country – and worldwide - Namibia is not out of the danger zone of Malaria outbreaks.

There is also a probability that Namibia-specific climate change predictions, will result in an expansion and increased spread of Malaria in the future.

Heavy rainfall in the desert We are driving north through the desert. Dark clouds appear on the horizon. A heavy thunderstorm is approaching our way. We were not expecting rain in this area. An increase in rainfall in-

tensity is not only likely to create more opportunities for mosquitoes to breed as new open water sour-ces are likely to be created, but also heavy rainfall events are expected to create more new mosquito breeding sites along roadways and in receptacles, while an increase in flooding is likely to wash away mosquito eggs to other places and cause some of the current breeding places to deteriorate.

Floods and power

cuts We have seen it in Cameroon where communities have been cut off from the rest of the world and all health facilities. Roads were impassable, and the transport system came to a complete standstill. Sick people could not reach the health centres. During our drive in the direction of Kamanjab, roads were completely flooded. We had to drive for 8 kilometres through deep

Albertina Shanghala, David Robertson, Julia Samuel, a local Himba woman and Barbara Kahiha in front of the General Hospital Opuwo water. Cars were stranded in the middle of the flood. The whole region around Khorixas and Kamanjab was cut off from electricity. Candles lit our tiny room where we could stay the night.

Amazing children Wherever we travel, children are always intrigued by the African map. We asked some of the children if they knew where specific countries were. We are amazed when many of the children get the answer right first time. We explain about the countries David has driven across over the last 28 years.

Rising number of infected people

Children are always intrigued by the African map

A rapid change between floods and droughts is expected to lead to more frequent episodes of malaria, as such extreme events may encourage the migration of malaria infected human populations from Angola into or out of malaria areas, and also lead to

David Robertson and Julia Samuel continue the Drive Against Malaria in Namibia a rising number of infected people. In Opuwo we visit the General Hospital to meet the Malaria Programme Officers, Asteria Evarel, Barbara Kahika and Albertina Shanghala. Five cases have been reported and one death. During our meeting a phone call from Swartbooisdrif comes in. Ma-

laria cases are reported in the area. We decide to drive 114 km further north to Swartbooisdrif. We leave at 07:30, together with the hospital staff, to see what the situation is. David and Julia Drive Against Malaria www.driveagainstmalaria.org

Locker-vom-Hocker 3 on the Shelf

Slippery sidewalk - artist Carola Röhrich

“Writing is a drug – the pondering about and amazement with the fascination of Life” – that is in a nutshell how the writer-journalist, Susann Kinghorn, describes her passion for putting thoughts, experiences and feelings into words.

Hangover - artist Carola Röhrich

Kinghorn – seasoned namib times journalist, has just published her third volume of Locker-vom-Hocker – a collection from her column under the same title in the coastal newspaper, from 2014 and 2009 . Like the first two volumes, the short commentaries are accompanied by light-hearted, humorous illustrations, by the artist Carola Röhrich, who lives

with her husband Alex Oelofse on Mount Etjo Safari Lodge. The reader will again have the pleasure of commentaries covering a wide range of themes: How does it feel on Cloud Nine, after a babbelas, or when a Nguni-bull lands on your car’s bonnet while cruising in the Caprivi. What do Lungs and Mopane leaves have in common, what is the cheapest present on earth and how adaptable are camels? What does the writer – who grew up in the time when Hippies had wild hair – think about modern phenomena, like Sport-mad men who remove all their body hair? What does she say about the hubbub around the Reiterdenkmal, the new anti-tobacco law, the legacy of Riruako, and about Ageing? What does she think about wildcats, Braaivleis and Biltong, and the good old Swakop River? Locker-vom-Hocker-3 is now on the shelf in respected bookshops, and also available at farm stalls and at lodges. It’s interesting to notice that the writer’s first 2 volumes are also found advertised on a German website: http:// w w w. n a m i b i a n a . d e / namibia-information/ who-is-who/autoren/ infos-zur-person/susann-kinghorn.html

'Smart' new Ford Fusion reaches SA

* IOL Motoring These days the midsize-sedan market, otherwise known as the D-segment, is a pretty ruthless place for any car that doesn't have a premium German badge on its bonnet. Yet many brands persist in the hope that their shiny new sedan will sway the badge snobs with its looks/ technology/price or whatever other selling points it might have. The latest protagonist on this turf is Ford, which returns with a sedan that it hopes will be a stronger player than the Mondeo that left our market around a decade ago. This latest D-segment offering, now a global product, has evolved in leaps and bounds and Ford is certainly not unjustified in calling it the 'smartest' car that it has ever unleashed on the South African market. So what's smart about it?

Depending on the model or option pack that you select, the Fusion is available with a whole entourage of geek-approved convenience and safety features. These range from Sync 2 connectivity and infotainment to multi-contour seats with massage function and a new 'active' park assist for parallel and perpendicular bays. The list of available safety gadgets extends to adaptive LED headlights, lane keeping assist, active cruise control and a new pre-collision alert with auto-braking. Built on Ford's new global CD-segment platform, the Fusion aims for that ulti-

mate ride-cornering balance with an allnew integral-link rear suspension set-up, while advanced structural materials, like hydro-formed highstrength steel for the A, B and C pillars and roof rails and magnesium for the inner tailgate structure all conspire to maximise impact protection while minimising weight. TURBO BOOST As you'd expect, Ford is offering its latest range of EcoBoost turbopetrol engines. The smallest option is a 1.5-litre that produces a healthy 132kW and 240Nm. Not enough? Opt for one of the 2-litre EcoBoost options, with output levels of 149kW/300Nm in the case of the Trend model and 177kW/340Nm in the Titanium.

Don't worry, diesel-heads, Ford hasn't forgotten about you. Your car has a 2-litre TDCi unit that delivers 132kW and 400Nm. Average (lab-test) fuel consumption for the oil burner is a claimed 5.1 litres per 100km, versus 7.4 l/100km for the 1.5 petrol and 7.5 to 8.5 l/100km for the respective 2-litre petrol versions. FORD FUSION RANGE 1.5 EcoBoost Trend (132kW) 2.0 EcoBoost Trend (149kW) 2.0 EcoBoost Titanium (177kW) 2.0 TDCI Titanium (132kW) Included is a fouryear/120 000km warranty and a fouryear/80 000km service plan for EcoBoost models (five-years/ 90 000km for the TDCi).

New Honda Jazz hits a sharper note 30 JANUARY 2015

NAMIB TIMES

MOTORING

23

* IOL Motoring The Honda Jazz has always been one of the most versatile and practical cars in its class, says Honda SA director of operations Graham Eagle, but it's never been really cool. Until now. Speaking this week at the South African launch of the third-generation Jazz - sold as the Fit in its home market - he said that Honda’s design brief had been to create a car with the same or better interior space and seating flexibility, inside a slightly smaller envelope with sleeker, more sharpedged styling - and in fact the windshield of the new Jazz is so steeply raked that the profile of the bonnet and screen are very nearly continuous. A longer wheelbase shortens the overhangs and benefits ride quality while harder edges and strongly marked wheel-arches replace the previous generations' softer curves. The longer wheelbase has also allowed some clever re-packaging,

providing an additional 80mm between the hip points of the front and rear seats, and some extra foot-room for rearseat occupants under the front seats. The rear seats are also set slightly higher than on the previous version to improve the view from the peanut gallery. The fuel tank, however, is still in its unusual position under the front seats - which is what makes possible the Jazz' signature 'Magic Seat' folding system, that converts this little MPV from a bus into a van - or back again! - in about as much time and with as much effort as it takes to say, “Abracadabra!” INNER SPACE The cabin has also been given a slightly edgier look, with black upholstery and soft-touch

charcoal finishes, underlined by silver-finished trim accents. A new dashboard and instrument panel are centred on three clear, circular dials with blue backlighting, with a multifunction steering wheel as standard across the range. The new Jazz will be available in South Africa in a choice of four trim levels, starting with the Trend and Comfort models, each with a front-loading CD system complete with auxiliary and USB ports as well as Bluetooth connectivity for handsfree telephony. The Elegance model has a five-inch colour display, while the flagship Dynamic trim replaces that with a seveninch touch-screen infotainment system. Front, side and curtain

airbags are standard across the range, as are ABS, and an electronic stability programme, that uses data from monitors measuring wheel rotation, vehicle speed, steering input, lateral acceleration and yaw rate to apply braking force to one or more wheels independently while adjusting throttle input to minimise loss of traction. The new Jazz also has motion-adaptive electric power steering that uses vehicle speed and steering angle data to detect instability and nudge in the right direction with gentle steering inputs. TWO ENGINES, TWO TRANSMISSIONS, SEVEN MODELS The familiar 1.5-litre i-Vtec petrol four is back, delivering 88kW

at 6 600 revs and 145Nm at 4600rpm, taking the new Jazz from 0-100 in 9.9 seconds - or 10.6 with the stepless CVT transmission - at a revised-cycle estimate of just under six litres per 100km. The previous 1.3-litre version, however, has been replaced by an all-new 1.2-litre I-Vtec four for which Honda quotes 66kW at 6000 revs and 110Nm at 4800rpm, good enough to hit 100km/h from rest in 13.5 seconds (14.3 if you insist on CVT) and on to 175 (174) km/h, while warming the globe at a combined-cycle rate of 5.6 litres per 100km. The new Jazz will be available in South Africa from the beginning of February 2015. Prices include three-year or 100 000km warran-

ty and, on all variants except the 1.2 Trend, a four-year or 60 000km

service plan; your Jazz will need to go home to Mama every 15 000km.

God saw you getting tired God saw you getting tired, When a cure was not to be, So He wrapped His arms around you And whispered, “Come to me.” You didn't deserve what you went through, So He gave you rest. God’s garden must be beautiful, He only takes the best... And when I saw you sleeping, So peaceful and so free from pain I could not wish you back To suffer that again... ~Mia and Strauss Family~

Michelle Künzle in Top 20 Final of the FEI World Jumping Challenge

Namibia scores in regional team event

Namibias top showjumper Michelle Künzle has qualified for the 2015 Final of the FEI World Jumping Challenge in Bulgaria. In the overall individual standings of the competition which is ridden according to the same rules with exactly the same course in 50 different countries of the world, the Swakopmund rider finished 30th out of 475 competitors. With four clear rounds she is one of the top two qualifiers from each of the ten geographical regions competing in the FEI event that takes place in Zhitnica from the second to the sixth of July this year. Künzle will not be able to go into the finals with her trusted mount Metzger Drilling Zambesi Bodenhausen, but will instead be allocated a horse in a draw. „I really look forward to this challenge, but I would love to have my superstar Zambesi with me,“ says the 30-year old who has qualified for the finals of this competition in the

past. In 2008 at age 24 she rode to victory in Santiago de Chile in her greatest achievement to date. Having to compete on a strange horse is not a problem for Künzle, who says she enjoys the thrill of having to get to grip with adverse circumstances. The 2014 final at Kayalami Park in South Africa was won by Zimbabwean Charley Crockart ahead of Maria Gabriela Brugal from the Dominican Republic and South African rider Rainer Korber. The World Jumping Challenge was introduced by the International Equestrian Federation (FEI) to allow less experienced riders to compete at international level without having to leave their home country. The top two from each country then travel to the finals without their horses.

Michelle Kunzle & Metzger Drilling Zambesi Bodenhausen Namibian Caroline Coulson and her gelding Locarno Monte Carlo in their debut to the competition finished 309th overall in category A over 1.20m, while Künzles mother, Annette and her stallion Rostock

Ritz Rolling Thunder finished 426th. This gave them bronze behind Zimbabwe and Mauritius in group seven of the regional team event in category A. In category C over 1.00m
