Lamour Isaacks, a Grade 8 student at Kuisebmond Secondary School in Walvis Bay, was sent home this week, after being notified that the school’s regulations do not allow boys to have long hair. In this instance Lamour, who is raised under the Rastafarian Religion, has dreadlocks, as mandatory to his religion. Although the school has not formally suspended the student, he has missed 3 days of school, because of his dreadlocks. The boy’s father, Mr Ras Isaacks, contacted the namib times, after receiving a hand-written letter from the school’s principal, indicating that “he can only attend school if his hair is cut.” The letter, written on a used piece of paper, further notes that “if you fail to adhere to it, your child must look for another school, where learners with Rasta hair are allowed.” On arrival at the school

yesterday morning, one of the teachers at the school offensively approached the learner in front of his father and this reporter, asking the child where he has been and if he had told his father that he did not do his homework. This teacher did not even bother to ask what the situation was. Ms Gawises (Education Inspector of the Walvis Bay circuit) was also informed about the scenario and yesterday paid the school a visit. Mr S N Gottlieb, Kuisebmond Secondary school’s headmaster noted to the child’s father that “the school

didn’t single him out because of his religion; they singled him out because of his hair. We want him back in school and we are not abandoning him, but can only allow him back if he adhere to the school rule No 2, which you have signed as a parent.” Mr Isaacks’ response to this was that dreadlocks are a method of self-expression, because it communicates to others an important fact about Lamour, that he is a Rastafarian for whom traditional religious practices are important. By refusing to allow him to attend school, the
