Rรถssing handed over to its new master Sharlien Tjambari Rio Tinto handed over the keys to the Rรถssing Mine to its new Chinese owner on Friday during a ceremony held at the Mine's site on Thursday afternoon.

The Mine is now officially known as the CNNC Rรถssing Mine (China National Nuclear Corporation). CNNC's subsidiary China National Uranium Corporation 9CNUC) is also involved with the mine.

Zimbabwe dry port Rössing handed over launched at Walvis Bay to its new master Continued from page 1 The Zimbabwean dry port in the port of Walvis Bay was inaugurated on Friday by the country's president Emmerson Mnangagwa. The 18 300 square metres dry port was completed at a total cost of N$48,5 million and construction took some four years. The dry port will be used as a gateway for the storage and handling of all cargo to and from Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwe is landlocked and depends on the port of Walvis Bay and the Trans-Caprivi Corridor for imports and exports and the transport of these trade goods.

Zimbabwe has mainly been using sea ports in Mozambique and South Africa. Studies showed Walvis Bay is the better alternative in that it saves both time and costs.

We are indebted to Namibia for granting us this rare gift. It makes Zimbabwe part of Namibia's plan to establish the port of Walvis Bay into a regional trade hub, President Mnangagwa during the opening. The dry port is also a mechanism to integrate Namibia and Zimbabwe's economies and it has mutual development potential for both countries.

The Zimbabwe dry port is also expected to play a beneficial role to other landlocked countries in the SADC (Southern African Development Community). Countries like Zambia, Malawi and the Democratic Republic of Congo. It would also benefit Botswana, but this neighbouring country already operates a dry port facility in the port of Walvis Bay, operated by Sea Rail Botswana.

In his keynote address President Hage Geingob said since the integration of Walvis Bay in 1994, it has been the Namibian Government's vision to position the port of Walvis Bay as an import and export for countries in the SADC who are not bordering an ocean.

In the days before the official opening, Namibia and Zimbabwe signed seven different bilateral agreements under provisions of the 9th ZimbabweNamibia Joint Permanent Commission on Cooperation (JPCC). The agreements put in place structures to further strengthen economic ties between the two countries.

Some of the trade deals include a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on promotion of small to medium enterprises, with particular focus on women.

President Mnangagwa subsequent to the signing of the agreements extended an open invitation to the Namibian private sector to explore business opportunities in Zimbabwe and to learn how these agreements can optimise business in Zimbabwe.

Many times over the past few years there were rumours that the Rössing Mine is closing its doors. In stark contrast to that, the mine welcomed the leaders of the China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) and its subsidiary China National Uranium Corporation (CNUC) as its new owners.

The official handover witnessed by among others the Deputy Minister of Mines and Energy, Kornelia Shilunga, Mr. He Zixing (Vice President CNNC Rössing Uranium), Ms. Foibe Namene (Chairperson of Rössing Board of Directors) and the Ambassador of the Peoples Republic of China to Namibia, Zhang Yiming.

The Governor of Erongo, Clr. Cleophas Mutjavikua, also attended as a guest of honour and thanked Rio-Tinto for playing a significant part in Rössing the past 43 years. Also for being the key driver in placing Rössing Uranium on the world map of the nuclear energy business.

Minister Shilunga also thanked the Mine's leadership of the past for keeping the mine operating and urged the new owners to do exactly that. “I commend the leadership of Rössing Uranium, CNUC, CNNC and Rio Tinto for your dedication and resilience to keep the mine alive. It takes effective leadership to keep a mine like Rössing Uranium to continue to operate and be of strategic importance to Namibia for such a long time – altogether 43 years already”, the Minister is quoted.

Shilunga pointed out the mining sector contributes 14% to GDP in 2018. In the same period, the sector employed 16 221 employees directly and 6 681 as contractors. Rössing alone employs close to 2 000 people and contractors, outlining the immense both the Mine and the wider mining sector means for Namibia's economic growth.

“It is thus imperative that all the stakeholders of the mine take hands and work to keep the wheels turning at Rössing. I congratulate you all for successfully concluding the transaction, with everybody's best interests in mind”, the Minister further stated.

The Vice President of CNNC Rössing Uranium, He Zixing, in his address said Rössing Uranium Mine is the longest-operating uranium mine globally and also the most influential in the global business of uranium. It is among the biggest contributor to the international peaceful use of nuclear energy.

Zixing took the opportunity to thank the management and employees of the mine, past and present, without whose contributions the Mine would not have been where it is today.

Zixing hailed the acquisition of the Mine from Rio Tinto as an example of China-Africa cooperation and gave his assurance the Mine will continue to do its part for economic and social development in Namibia and also a contributor to State coffers as a taxable corporate citizen.

The fact that China is a strong and consistent nuclear power market, will also greatly improve the economic future of the Mine, for its employees and for its contractors.

Church faces ultimatum over noise Isaac Chikosi The Spirit of Truth of All Nations church at Swakopmund has been given an ultimatum by the Swakopmund municipality: stop the noisy church services or risk prosecution.

Churches at the coast have been taken to task in recent months after dozens of residents complained of noisy church services, often until late in the night. Loud music and pastors using loudspeakers to carry the message of salvation as far as the ear can hear formed the basis for complaints.

While noise levels from clubs, bars and entertainment houses usually travel far, especially at night disrupting the lives of residents, churches at the coast have also been in the spotlight for being noisy when conducting services.

Following this notice given to The Spirit of Truth Church of All Nations in Swakopmund's DRC settlement, the Christians Concerned Group (CCG) organised a peaceful demonstration to the Office of the Governor and a petition addressed to the Minister of Urban and Rural Development, Dr Peya Mushelenga.

Festus Thomas, the leader of CCG expressed his dissatis-

faction with regards to the way Christian groups are being treated with regards to land allocation. “There is no land allocated for churches”.

He lamented the fact that churches are being evicted mostly because of complaints of the loud noise. Last month, the Namibian Police in the Region confirmed having received numerous complaints about excess noise caused by churches. In addition to this, many argue that the public address (PA) systems are way too loud and could be turned down to suit the size of the congregation and not for the whole neighbourhood having to listen to spiritual leader's voice.

location received an ultimatum from Swakopmund Municipality instructing them to cease their current activities with “immediate effect.” In a letter dated 10 July 2019, the Health Services Department alluded to receiving complaints from “surrounding neighbours regarding the unsatisfactory conduct at the church premises in Swakopmund.”

According to the letter, the main concern was the continuous noise from the loud music of the church activities emanating from their premises, which deprives residents in the area of their peaceful sleep.

The letter further instructs the church and its overseers to stop their current activities and gave them 14 days

to comply. In contrast the petition submitted to the Governor's office from Bishop Festus Thomas and the Concerned Christian Group reads, “We are the mutual landless Minority Churches in Namibia, and we are humbly presenting this letter to you, as the only alternative way to inform you that our Namibian people (Minority Churches) are experiencing psychological torture, discrimination and humiliation by Swakopmund Municipal Township”. In addition to this the petition further reads; “Christians are also brilliant people who participate in voting, but our votes are totally meaningless, because after voting we always face horrible evictions because

we are not part of the system.” The group cited Article 10(2) of the Namibian Constitution in support of their case which states, “No persons may be discriminated against on the grounds of sex, race, colour, ethnic origin, religion, creed or

social or economic status. [sic]” A Mondesa resident who was questioned about the noise from churches had this to say. “I know bars also make noise, but the churches are excessive because they don't have a time limit.

Sometimes there is loud music until 03:00 in the morning.”

Bishop Thomas wants an end to what he feels is a war against the church.

The Swakopmund Municipality has not yet responded to questions at the time of going to press.

Kuisebmond Elderly in cheerful mood Rudi Bowe

The residents of the Kuisebmond Old Age Home in Walvis Bay received 34 towels and 34 face cloths worth N$3 250 from D'Expert Health Care.

The Director of D'Expert Health Care Esther Gabriel said “The need is huge and it is always tough to decide which facility will benefit. Many of the recipients cried tears of joy and shared their stories with our team members. The elderly in particular are a priority for us because they are vulnerable and can no longer take proper care of themselves.”

Gabriel added that every hand over is quite an emotional exercise.

Gabriel urged the community not to abandon elderly people who live at home, hospitals or in old age homes and are unable to take care of themselves and despite the number of available health and social welfare centres the access to health care is still a big issue to thousands of Namibians due to long distances and the prevailing economic situation.

The Kuisebmond Elderly expressed their profound appreciation for the donated from D'Expert Health Care and said that they will use it with love and care.

D'Expert Health Care was founded by Daphne R. Boigne (CEO) in 2017 to help improve the living standards of people with disabilities, HIV/Aids, the sick and elderly in the country and provides training courses for care-givers and also secures employment opportunities in hospitals, old age homes and home nursing services nationwide.

D'Expert Health Care is been donating good since the inception and earlier this year donations was made to the Katutura Old Age Home in Windhoek as well as the elderly in Lüderitz and Keetmanshoop.

Affordable Christian School Eileen van der Schyff

An affordable Christian based Pre-School opened its doors in June 2017 in Kuisebmond, Walvis Bay. Neele and Josef Nambili opened Hamster PreSchool two years ago to offer the community of Kuisebmond affordable education. “Leave no one behind is what we had in mind when we were planning our pre-school”, Neele told the Namib Times in a recent interview. Neele Named the pre-school after her late fathers' nickname, Hamster. “Being a scout, my dad always carried everything you might possibly need in his pockets. In Germany, we call someone like that a hamster”, Neele explained.

The Pre-School offers a warm, friendly, safe and stimulating environment for children from the ages of 2 to 7 years old (Grade R). Currently Neele and her husband still finance everything themselves. The school offers three teachers of which one is a qualified pre-primary teacher and the other two are assistant teachers. Children 5 to 7 years old (Grade R), are prepared for Grade 1. “We strive to do our best for these children as we believe good education is important for the wellbeing and upliftment of the community of

Kuisebmond. Out of the thirty-nine children between eighteen months and seven years old at our school, six do not pay any school fees and three others pay a lower rate.” Neele said. In this safe and warm environment, children can learn through play inside and outside. The school offers educational toys, books and activities to teach the children. Children enjoy activities like clay, ball games, puzzles, building blocks, fine motor activities like learning to tie shoelaces and they get to learn basic Phonics to prepare them for school.

Hamster Pre-School also offers afternoon classes at a small cost. This is for children form grade 1 to 8. Neele said there is an Afrikaans teacher that comes to teach Afrikaans in the afternoons. The school needs not only financial donations, but also anything at home that people don't need or use anymore that can be used inside the classroom and outside on the playground. Walvis Bay Junior Town Council hosted their annual beauty pageant for teenagers to compete for the title of Miss Teen Walvis Bay with the theme this year was "Disco" last week at the town hall in Walvis Bay. Dominique Bouwer was crowned Miss Teen Walvis Bay and as Miss Debutante. April Hoebes was crowned First Princess and got the title of Miss Personality. Chrystal Clark was crowned Second Princess. Jeryne Arendse was crowned both Miss Photogenic and Miss Fan's Favourite.

In the pre-teen division, Malinda Bam was crowned Miss Pre-Teen and Britney Botha as her First Princess. Britney Botha was also crowned as the Fan's Favourite. Emilia Silas was crowned Second Princess. Beatha Shimooshili was crowned Miss Debutant and Princess Steven was crowned Miss Personality.

For the first time in the history of Miss Teen,

almost all winnings went to one school. Miss !Nara Crowned Eileen van der Schyff

Nara Primary School had great success with the presentation of their first ever beauty pageant on Friday 19 July at the Kuisebmond community hall. The objective of this pageant was to raise funds to construct a netball court and a sitting area for the students.

The community hall was fully packed. The Miss !Nara Primary School crown went to Princounsely Hiskia, and Bertha Kinda was crowned her 1st Princess. The 2nd Princess crown went to Fimanekeni Paulus. Namibian swimmer Phillip Seidler from Swakopmund has sets his mark at the 18 FINA World Championships 10km open water swimming events that were held on July 12 in Yeosu, South Korea.

Seidler competed against the world's top long - distance swimmers and finished 32nd overall, with a time of 1:50:14hrs.

Seidler smashed his previous record time of 1:54:41hrs that he set at the South African National Aquatic Championships in Jeffrey's Bay earlier this year.

Seidler was the third African to complete the race, behind two South Africans - Chad Ho, 23rd in a time of 1:49.37hrs ahead of his team mate Danie Marais, 30th in a time of 1:50:14hrs.

A total of 75 swimmers enter the 23.0 degree water for the 10km open water swimming event that is an automatic Olympic qualification Tokyo 2020 for the top 10 finishers, it was the fastest race in the last four years, perhaps faster than the Olympic Games in Rio. For Seidler the race was tough, one of the fastest he ever has done. Phillip felt strong during the whole race, even when the race pace picked up at a very early stage at about 4,5km. He rated this race one of his best and is very motivated to keep on making

Namibia proud in open water swimming.

Phillip is focusing on the 2020 Olympic Trials in Fukuoka which will take part next year June in Japan. He will do his best and hopefully he will qualify for Tokyo 2020. The top 9 finishers will qualify, but only one athlete per nation can qualify

through that event.

Then the next-best finisher from each continent will also qualify to ensure c o n t i n e n t a l representation.

Phillip's aim is to gain more racing experience by competing in more international events and he is looking forward to a future of hard work a n d c o n s t a n t improvement.

Seidler said “I was happy to compete i the highly competitive 10 km Open Water race which was one of the fastest and most furious

races in the past 4 years of open water swimming. Everyone was trying to finish in the top ten for a place at the Olympic Games”.

I worked and trained hard for this event and I am proud to gain more experience to focus on my next big event. The 2019 Hangana Hake Run and Ride was launched last Friday during a function at Hangana Seafood Processors in Walvis Bay. This year an enormous N$100 000 in prize money is up for grabs.

The annual Hake Run and Ride is a highlight on the coast’s annual sport calendar and takes place this year on 5 October.

Hangana sponsors around N$90 000 and Nedbank spends N$100 000 on this event every year. Nedbank is known for its tremendous contribution to cycling.

Drawing close to 1 000 entries each year, this year's Hangana Hake Run and Ride will once more consist of cycling and running events. That includes a marathon, half-marathon, 10 kilometre fun run, as well as a 90 kilometre road cycling race, 21 kilometre mountain bike race and 5km kiddies' race.

The marathon serves as an official qualifier for the Two Oceans- and Comrades marathons in South Africa. The 90 kilometres road cycling race is a Namibia Cycling Federation sanctioned event.

Nedbank Namibia also undertook to sponsor the official Comrades Marathon and South African National Triathlon Coach Lindsey Parry, to take part in this year's Hangana Hake Run and Ride.

To ensure a fun-filled family outing on race day, Hangana Hake Run and Ride forms part of the annual 'Walvisfees' hosted at Jan Wilken Stadium in Walvis Bay, where the start and finish line is for all the events.

and that its part of company’s corporate social responsibility portfolio. Events like this also encourage a healthy lifestyle through the run and ride.

“Fifteen per cent of all registration fees are donated to a local charity. In 2018, Sunshine Centre, which cares for children with physical and mental disabilities in Walvis Bay, was the recipients of an amount of N$26 000. The 2019 recipient has been identified as the Early Childhood Development Centre at Lüderitz ”, Theron added.

Race organizer, Francois van der Merwe explained the Hangana Hake Run and Ride attracted the attention of a travel agent in Germany specialising in sport tourism. Subsequently it has been added to the travel agent's 2020 and 2021 catalogue of sport packages.

The organisers are also going the extra mile to ensure the muddy condition experienced last year with the long distance cycling event will be avoided this year. The new route will include the new, partially completed tar road behind the dune belt that connects Swakopmund and Walvis Bay (MR44).

Due to road construction works on this road in 2018, the organisers had to opt for an alternative gravel road.

The fat bike race category was removed due to the small number of entries in the past. The 21km mountain bike race and 10km fun run remain the same as last year. This offers all participants the unique opportunity to appreciate Walvis Bay's lagoon and wet land scenery.

Walvis Bay Golf News NATIONAL SAGES Walvis Bay Golf Club member Tienie de Wet was the winner of the National Sages held in Windhoek over the past weekend.

It is not sure when last a member of the Walvis Bay Golf Club won the National Sages. “Mooi gedaan Tienie, ons is trots”.

Last weekend we held the always popular WBM Flags were held last weekend with the good weather and great fun that went hand in hand on the day with all eyes on the course to see where the first flag was going to be planted.

Once we all saw it was done, there was a

communal sigh of relief not having to be the first.

So it was appropriate that the first flag planted won the Neil Armstrong first flag award – this was proudly received by Karl Beukes.

The point of this competition is to carry you flag to the furthest point on the green based of the course and rating your handicap.

Golf on the day was good as most of the 39 players (excluding one of the sponsors) were able to carry their flag over Mavis

Panton drive. However it was Pieter Fox who played good golf to take his flag the furthest on the course to win the first prize.

Second place went to Francois Champion Junior with third going to Bertie Coetzee. 4th spot went to Wynand Breytenbach and Estelle Bothma claimed the 5th place prize. One of the prize winners was not present so that prize went to a lucky draw which was won by none more deser-

ving than Shane Westerdale with a good score of 74 for the day. There was only one two club for the day, Anton van Rensburg.

Wouter van Wijk handed out the prizes and to thunderous applause announced that they would be back next year.

We are really in the mix as far as Golf in the country is concerned with our juniors doing very well and we do have a few of our members in the National team, both men and ladies.
